Diane,
As we enter the 2026 show season, I want to sincerely thank you for an incredible 2025 with Kayde VH. Being entrusted with him has truly been an honor.
From the moment you allowed Kayde to come to Texas, your belief in him and commitment to his future have been evident. Your dedication, thoughtful decisions, and unwavering support have allowed him to grow into the powerful, con!dent horse he is today. That kind of progress only happens when an owner truly puts the horse !rst—and you do exactly that.
Thank you for the trust you place in me as his trainer and for being such a steady, supportive partner throughout the year. It has been rewarding to watch Kayde continue to develop, and I’m grateful to be part of his journey with you.
I’m proud of what we accomplished together in 2025 and excited for what lies ahead!
With gratitude, Stephanie Sage

As I look back on 2025, I honestly don’t even know where to begin—except with thank you.
!is was my first-ever show season, and because of you, it became something I could have never imagined. From never having ridden a show horse before to traveling and showing all around the country with two incredibly talented horses, every milestone we reached is a direct reflection of your dedication, patience, and belief in me.
Winning three Mid Summer National Championships and countless other ribbons still feels surreal, but what means even more to me is the rider you helped shape along the way. You gave me your time, your consistency, your honesty, and your unwavering support—day in and day out. You didn’t just teach me how to ride; you taught me how to work, how to trust the process, and how to rise to challenges with confidence.
!ank you for pushing me when I needed it, encouraging me when I doubted myself, and celebrating every win—big or small. I am the rider I am today because of the dedication you poured into me, and I am endlessly grateful to be learning from you.
Here’s to an unforgettable 2025 and to many more seasons together.
With so much appreciation, Nikki Pate

ELIZABETH MARIE DESARLE
Wisdom in Adversity
BY HALEY EVANS
Elizabeth Marie DeSarle started riding as a child. Her passion for horses led to her open her own stable just after finishing high school; her work ethic and drive led her from Ohio to Utah and finally Arizona, where she’s operated Elizabeth Marie Equestrian Center for the last several years. She had her routine and training program down to a science... then a sudden crisis turned everything on its head.
Elizabeth first realized something was wrong while competing in the spring of 2025. Unexpectedly, she lost nearly all feeling in her left leg, which sent her horse crooked. Elizabeth and her mother both have degenerative disc disease, and it turned out that in Elizabeth the discs compressed in an unusually difficult spot. She was able to have surgery in June, which worked out well: with horses working less in the Arizona heat and school out of session, it was the best possible time to be forced to stop working. She had great help from her partner Eddie McCain, her best friend Alair Lewis (at one point Alair stayed with Elizabeth for a full week when Eddie’s work took him out of town), and her students, who stepped up in the barn and visited her every day with well-wishes, balloons, and flowers. But what should have been only a minor rough patch became a larger problem.
Elizabeth and Eddie noticed drainage from her back, and their long experience with horses likely saved her life. They immediately recognized signs of infection and Elizabeth went back to the doctor, where she was diagnosed with a serious case of sepsis. She needed a second surgery to remove infected bone, muscle, and tissue, as well as a PICC line that delivered two antibiotics for six weeks. This health crisis changed Elizabeth’s life, and she knows the experience isn’t entirely unique to her. “So many trainers have these issues and it’s never brought up,” she states. With work being so taxing on trainers’ bodies, she hopes that her fellow professionals become more open about health challenges and more willing to seek support.
It took months for Elizabeth to recover enough for her doctor to let her step in the saddle again. She took her first ride in early October and picked a very special horse to get her back in the saddle: Kids A Star GRK (“Toby”), whom Elizabeth bred, raised, and trains. Despite her immense progress, Elizabeth readily admits that the healing process proved hard.
Like many driven people, she had difficulty asking for and accepting help and needed to actively tell herself that she was not weak for needing it. Being forced to take weeks of bedrest and experiencing serious side effects from the antibiotics left her with shaken confidence and a lack of energy. She had to push herself to get out of bed and back to the barn, something she is proud of while also admitting that she’s still trying to get used to her new normal. The doctors estimate that full recovery can take as long as 18 months, and for someone used to being constantly on the go, it’s been an adjustment.
Elizabeth also had to convince herself that it was okay to work an eight-hour day instead of her usual 12-hour shift, and discovered that in addition to learning to give herself some grace, the health scare also made her more thoughtful and compassionate toward other people. “When you start coming back to work,” Elizabeth points out, “nothing is going to be the same. You have to take it easy on the horses and your students. They tried so hard to do things the way you do [them] and wanted so badly for you to get better.”
Recovery also affected how Elizabeth trains in ways other than her working hours. Even though she wants to work the way she used to, she’s innately pragmatic and knows that restraint is better in the long run. Taking proper time to heal prevents the
need for another surgery, so although she’s bringing a string to Scottsdale, this year’s show will look a little different. “For the first time ever, I’m doing Sport Horse,” she shares. “It’s a little less stressful while I’m not at full strength.” She’s still supervising an incredible 41 classes, but has eased away from the hotter English horses for now and is focusing instead on Western Pleasure, Dressage, and Mounted Native Costume. Eddie surprised her with an electric bicycle, too, which makes zipping across the show grounds much easier.
Elizabeth’s bed rest gave her more time to think about other trainers and humanity in general: so many people endure trials unknown to the rest of the world. Understanding that makes her want to be kinder to herself and to others. Horses have always been Elizabeth’s top priority (she got back surgery in the first place to do better by her horses), and that’s still true. “Horses help people heal,” she affirms, “and help me heal, and I’m grateful to have them.” But she’s also supremely grateful for the humans who carried her through this: Eddie, Alair, and all her wonderful students who supported her with their love, work, and dedication. Elizabeth has nice horses this year that she’s excited to improve and get into the show ring, but with her changed perspective her goals for this season run deeper: “I want to be a better instructor, trainer, and friend.”

AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
From Quebec to the Arizona Desert
BY JONATHAN LAMBERT AND HALEY EVANS
Arabian horses capture hearts across borders, and Canada claims an exceptionally passionate fan base. Jonathan Lambert, teacher by day and amateur horseman in his limited free time, served 10 years as the president of the Arabian Horse Association of Quebec solely because of his love for the breed. Although he’s stepped away from that post, he still delights in serving as a breed ambassador and loves nothing more than seeing his fellow Canadians sharing Arabians with the world. When his friends Denis Pellerin and Josée Marion, Arabian lovers for many years and now retired, decided to take a trip to Nova Scotia last fall, Jonathan suggested they meet up with MaryLouise D’Entremont-Ritchie.
Mary-Louise owns two star Canadian Arabian mares, Simply Unique RF and Patzji Cline, who is co-owned with Jonathan Lambert. The end result of that fateful meeting was that Mary-Louise decided to entrust Denis and Josée with a dream adventure: a long-distance trail riding expedition through the heart of the desert from Québec to California. They crossed the U.S./Canada border on October 28, traveling through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona. This expedition has seen it all. Whether navigating steep cliffs or sleeping calmly by the camper under fireworks, these mares are living the ultimate adventure with two experienced riders.
The mares are special themselves, too. Not only have they been perfect emissaries for the
breed — Jonathan reports that the younger mare got really used to traveling and loves it, as shown by “beautiful ears, always happy” — they’re from pristine bloodlines. Simply Unique RF (“Unique”), bred by the amazing Canadian breeder Janie Greenberg, is the ultimate companion for Patzji Cline. Once a Regional Hunter Champion, this 20-year-old mare is now discovering the world with Josée on her back. Her experience helps “Patzji,” a 2020 purebred filly who already possesses great accolades. Patzji was the 2021 Canadian National Champion Yearling and 2022 Canadian National Champion 2-Year-Old. In 2023, she earned Top 10 at Scottsdale, and in 2025 she was the 5-Year-Old Québec Suprême Champion in the summer show. Patzji is enjoying the desert trails with Denis and Josée and also preparing to shine in the spotlight.
This young mare will be competing again at the prestigious Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, supported by the expertise of Carson Ehret’s team. Carson produced this young mare with Dwight Sartison’s stallion Tajj Al Amir and the mare Qatars Love Song, who was gifted to Carson by Stuart and Sue Larsen. Carson later sold the resulting filly to Mary-Louise and Jonathan; now, Patzji is getting a world-class education on the road.
“I would say that the mare has been trained in a different way,” Jonathan muses. “With mountains, trails, lunging — they did all that.” Denis and Josée trailered the mares to preplanned destinations, sometimes stopping with
friends and sometimes just camping on the side of the road. The impromptu camps have helped them meet some new faces; campfires, good drinks, and laughter were supremely effective tools for introducing the world both to the dedication of Canadian Arabian horse lovers and the versatility of the breed itself. Explains Jonathan, “They’ve been doing some really rocky trail rides, like big mountains and beautiful views. They stop everywhere and now they are really close [to Scottsdale]; they’re in the desert.”
At the time of writing, Patzji and Unique are four hours away from Scottsdale and being feted at a carnival, with people eager to meet them and celebrate their accomplishment. The mares are enjoying the attention and the trip; they’ve been eating very well and are in excellent condition, although they’ll get a body clip and some shoes before the show. Still, they are thriving, and everyone affected by this epic adventure is thrilled to see Arabian horses doing what they were originally bred to do: traveling long distances over rough terrain as companions to human beings.
This incredible journey has sparked conversations across two countries about the nature of the Arabian horse and undeniably demonstrated just how far Canadian horse lovers are willing to go for the sake of their beloved equine partners. “I love this,” finishes Jonathan. “They’re wonderful ambassadors, and it is a proud moment for Canadian Arabian horse lovers, breeders, owners, and competitors.”

TACK SOLUTIONS
BY NIKA OSUNA
Located in the heart of Scottsdale, Arizona, just 15 minutes from WestWorld, Tack Solutions has served the Arizona equine community since 1983. Once solely a consignment store, Tack Solutions has evolved into a true one-stop shop for all things equine. Tack Solutions is now under the direction of Arabian horse enthusiast Sheila Curley, who is dedicated to expanding the store and its offerings to serve not only Arizona horse lovers but the national equine community at large.
Sheila and her daughter, Jenna, came into the horse world by happenstance. Sheila was working full-time in medical sales and needed to find an activity for Jenna to do during summer break. Sheila found a local barn offering horse camps and signed her up. Then-7-year-old Jenna was hooked immediately and wanted to sign up for weekly lessons. Sheila had loved horses as a child but was never able to pursue riding, so she saw this as her chance to pursue her own childhood dreams while also spending extra time with Jenna. Picking up a new sport in her 40s was daunting, but Sheila quickly found her footing and she and Jenna have fully embraced the Arabian industry.
A Connecticut native, Sheila fell in love with Scottsdale when traveling to town to ride their show horses at Colby Powell Performance Horses. Sheila was ready for a change of scenery and a change of career, and it just so happened that Tack Solutions had recently been listed for sale. Sheila took a leap of faith, moved to Arizona, and bought the store at the beginning of 2023. At that point, it had moved to its current 6000 square foot showroom and expanded from consignment only to retail stock. In the nearly three years since she purchased the business, Sheila has expanded the retail offerings, ensuring there is something for everyone. Jenna has come on board too, overseeing the store’s marketing and assisting with merchandising. Tack Solutions is a true family affair and is proudly women-owned-and-run.
Today, Tack Solutions carries a selection of the industry’s top brands for every discipline, including:
Circle Y & Reinsman | Chestnut Bay | Colorado Leather Balm | DAC | Dreamers and Schemers | Ellany Belts | Ovation | Equinavia & Horze HDR | Heritage Gloves | HKM | Kastel Denmark | Kerrits | Kunkle Gloves | LeMieux | Majyk Equipe | MountEase
Tack Solutions also boasts a booming online retail space. Shoppers don’t need to wait for their next trip to Scottsdale to stock up on their favorites; everything that’s sold in-store is available to ship nationwide. Many of Sheila’s out-of-town customers tell her that Tack Solutions is the best tack store they’ve ever visited, and Tack Solutions was recently named as one of the Best Clothing, Tack, and Gift Shops of 2025 in Equestrian Business Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Awards.
Though the selection of new products has expanded, Tack Solutions will always offer quality consignment goods as well. Sheila believes this benefits her customers, particularly those shopping for saddles, by offering them endless options under one roof. This customer consideration is surely what keeps the Tack Solutions clientele coming back time and time again, and what has cemented it as a must-visit destination for those traveling from out of state.

PB AMATEUR WESTERN PLEASURE TO RIDE RESERVE CHAMPION
What an incredible honor to be named All-American Western Pleasure Amateur to Ride Reserve Champions with the amazing PA Antor+! This achievement is especially meaningful as it marks our very first year showing together, making both the journey and the result incredibly rewarding. I am deeply grateful to Stanley White III for his exceptional expertise as a trainer and teacher — his knowledge, patience and guidance shaped every step of this journey. I am truly thankful for the time and care he puts into developing both horse and rider. Heartfelt thanks to my husband, Barry, for his constant support and encouragement — none of this would be possible without you! A very special thank you to my son, Zach, our biggest fan and cheerleader; I carry your encouragement with me every time I step into the ring. I am so proud of this partnership with PA Antor+ and beyond excited for all that 2026 has in store!

SO MANY PEOPLE TO k AFTER SUCH AN AMAZING YEAR!
First, thank you to Jeremy and Chelsea Harper and Harper Arabians for having the vision to breed this incredible horse. Thank you also to Francisco Martinez for singling him out and giving him the best start. Huge thank you to Colonial Wood Training Center and to Josh and Jennifer Quintus for bringing this guy along and giving him the very best care. Thanks to Troy White for his help with Malachi’s halter presentation. Thanks to my dear friends who are part of the Colonial Wood team who support each other and all our horses. Having your support this past year and all the previous years has meant so very much.
Can’t thank Josh enough for having faith in this horse and for showing him so very well. But mostly for giving me the opportunity to own this amazing horse. Malachi’s next stop is the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, where he will be shown by Josh in Junior Western Pleasure and by me in Scottsdale Signature Stallion Championship Western Pleasure Maturity ATR and Adult Amateur Western Pleasure.

Thank you,
I am deeply grateful to my parents, whose unwavering support, encouragement, and belief in me have made this journey possible. Thank you to Chris and Michele, who always have supported me, encouraged my growth, and believed in my vision. Your guidance and steady presence have meant more than words can express. And, to my first Half-Arabian, "Ike," who taught me to love Equitation and the art of riding, you shaped not only the person I became but the direction of my life’s work. Your influence continues to drive my pursuit of a doctorate, with the hope of strengthening collaboration and improving outcomes for horses who need it most.

TRUE PROGRESS IS RARELY THE WORK OF A SINGLE INDIVIDUAL. I extend my deepest gratitude to several remarkable individuals — and to one exceptionally talented horse — who have made this journey not only possible but profoundly rewarding. First and foremost, my trainer, Amy Miller, whose extraordinary skill, unwavering patience, and steadfast dedication have been the cornerstone of our advancement. In the span of just one year, Amy has forged a deep connection with Dancing For Khash, guiding him with grace from the foundational Training Level to the sophisticated demands of Fourth Level. What has unfolded is nothing short of enchanting. I am equally grateful to my girlfriend, Crystal, for her unwavering positivity, encouragement, and companionship. I consider myself truly fortunate to be supported by such talent and generosity — and to share the path with a horse of Dancing For Khash’s remarkable ability.

to all of "Westley’s" connections. We truly wouldn’t be here without you. Special appreciation to Melanie Rosvold of Belarian Arabians, breeder of As You Wish BF+/R; Rachael Ball of Bey City Performance Horses; Lorin Price of Priceless Performance Horses; and David Conner of David Conner Training at DM Arabians. While Westley naturally draws people wherever he goes, I’m incredibly grateful for the village that surrounds us. CHRISTIE LAFONTAINE
Where Passion Meets Purpose
BY NIKA OSUNA
One of the greatest qualities of the Arabian breed is that they truly are the horse for all ages. From young children to seniors and every age in between, the Arabian horse has an uncanny ability to draw people in. Christie LaFontaine has experienced the draw of this breed twice in her life — once as a young child and again in 2024 after a 25-year hiatus from the equestrian world.
Christie comes from a multigenerational equestrian family. Her grandfather kept Tennessee Walking Horses, and her mother grew up riding and loving the horses. Through her own riding career, she was introduced to Arabians and immediately fell for the breed. She passed this love on to Christie from the time she was born. Christie grew up spending as much time with the horses as she could, first riding her family’s trail horses with friends and then entering her first walk/trot class when she was around 10.
After that first small show, Christie was hooked. She began taking formal lessons with a local Colorado trainer and showing at age 12. In her final year as a junior exhibitor, her family met trainer Shan Wilson. Under Shan’s direction she earned Top 10 ribbons at both Youth and Canadian Nationals — a highlight of her youth career. However, as Christie entered her senior year of high school, it was time for her focus to shift to college and, later, her career and family. Though she rode casually on several occasions over the years, those opportunities were few and far between. Finally, in 2024 she mentioned to her mother that she found herself deeply missing horses, Arabians in particular. However, she wasn’t quite sure how to make the logistics work. “[I have] a full-time job and two young kids. I live in Colorado and Shan Wilson is in Missouri, and I couldn’t imagine training with anybody else,” Christie explains.
Despite Christie’s uncertainty, her mother called Shan, who was delighted to have them back in the barn. Once Christie visited Shan’s farm, she and her mother jumped back into the industry headfirst. They purchased the purebred mare Heir For You for Christie to show for the 2024 season, and at present they now have 10 horses in training in Missouri and are expecting several foals this spring. “I’ve been so hooked and I think even more horse crazy than when I was a teenager,” Christie shares. “I’ve just been loving it so much. It’s something my mom and I both just truly love together.”
Of course, returning to her childhood passion has not been without its challenges. “I was just blown away with how physically demanding it was. I didn’t remember that as a junior exhibitor because I had grown up riding my whole life,” says Christie. However, she has been determined to give this sport her all. She visits her horses in Missouri whenever she is able and takes weekly lessons at a Morgan barn near her Colorado home to keep herself in shape for her show horses.
Christie’s return to the industry has been everything she hoped it would be. She has felt welcomed back with open arms, especially by her ChriShan Park family. She enjoyed an incredible 2025 season with Principessa KD+/, her purebred English Pleasure mare, and purebred
Country English Pleasure gelding Neviano VA+/. “Principessa” carried her to her first Scottsdale Championship and Reserve National Championship, while “Neviano” brought her to two Region 11 Reserve Champion titles. More than anything, Christie is thrilled to share this journey with her mother, who continues to be her constant cheerleader, and daughters, who have both just started riding as well.
Christie’s advice to anyone who may be considering coming back to horses after a hiatus is simple: “Follow your passion. Never put it off until later.” Christie is the happiest she’s been in years with horses back in her life, and she can’t wait to trot into the Equidome with her beloved show-ring partners as she continues this next chapter.

HORSE SENSE
History of the Trotting Breeds
AN OVERVIEW
Baroque Period
1747
(1600 - 1830 CE)
Nathaniel Harrison imports a horse of Arabian, Barb, and Turkish ancestry to America, one of the earliest recorded horses of Arabian breeding on the continent.
Europeans in North America begin breeding their imported European horses, particularly gaited “amblers” and “pacers” as well as English Thoroughbreds. Over time, settlers develop unique breeds that influence Saddlebreds:
» Narragansett Pacer
» Canadian Pacer
1775
» Morgan Colonial expansion and the creation of vast farms and plantations make horsemen focus on smooth-gaited horses that carry riders comfortably over long distances. A type develops that combines the size of a Thoroughbred with the smooth gaits and stamina of pacing breeds — “the American Horse.”
1789
The great Morgan foundation stallion Figure (the Justin Morgan horse) is foaled.
Figure.Reprinted withpermissionfromAMHA.
Over decades, the American Horse is further refined, development moves to the South, and it becomes known as the Kentucky Saddler, later renamed as the American Saddlebred.
Victorian Era
1816
(1830 - 1903 CE)
The first recorded exhibition of Saddle Horses takes place near Lexington, Kentucky.
1839
The earliest Saddlebred foundation sire, Denmark, is foaled. More than 60 percent of the horses in the first three registry volumes of the American Saddlebred Horse Association trace to his son, Gaines’ Denmark.
A. Keene Richard travels to the Middle East and returns with a string of Arabian stallions and mares, establishing a consequential breeding program that is unfortunately lost during the Civil War.
The St. Louis Fair hosts the first national horse show, and gaited horses show off their paces.
1850s » 1856 » 1859
The great Saddlebred trainer Tom Bass is born into slavery in Boone County, Missouri.
1860s
During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederate armies favor Kentucky Saddlers and Morgans for their endurance and comfortable gaits.
After the Civil War, the popularity of horse shows as entertainment increases, and the saddle seat discipline formally develops. Morgan breeders begin crossing their horses with longer-legged breeds, developing a type more suitable for the saddle seat discipline.
Ulysses S. Grant visits the Sultan of Turkey, who gives him two Arabian stallions. One is later given to Randolph Huntington, who establishes the first purebred breeding program in the United States.
1870s » 1877 » 1879
Tom Bass moves to Mexico, Missouri, and eventually opens a horse training operation. He’s known for his gentle methods and becomes one of the most-sought-after trainers in the country. Tom trains the influential stallion Rex McDonald (after the Lee brothers start him), helps start the American Royal, wins the World’s Championship on Miss Rex, and invents a curb bit still in use today.
1891 1893
The American Saddlebred Horse and Breeders Association forms (as the National Saddle Horse Breeders Association).
Visitors to the Chicago World’s Fair are dazzled by Turkey’s exhibition of 45 Arabian horses, including the mare Nejdme and the stallion Obeyran — the first foundation animals in the studbook of the Arabian Horse Association.

1895
Undulata Farm is founded in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
Kalarama Farm established by Judge I.H. Thurman.
1901 1902
The first Kentucky State Fair is held on the track at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The Five-Gaited Grand Championship is won by Preston, owned by Gay Brothers.
Modern Era
(1903 - PRESENT)
1908-1909
The Arabian Horse Club of America forms (now the Arabian Horse Association).
Major breeders like Spencer Borden, W.R. Brown, W.K. Kellog, Roger Selby, Joseph Draper, J.M. Dickinson, and Henry B. Babson import Arabians from England, Spain, and Egypt during the first decades of the 20th century. In 1909, the Morgan Horse Club forms (now the American Morgan Horse Association).

Breaking Barriers How Joe Louis and Black Horsemen Shaped
Saddle Seat History
The Kentucky State Fair offers its first $10,000 Five-Gaited Stake and calls itself the World’s Championship.
1917 1925
W.K.Kellogg Arabian Horse Center founded.
Joe Louis becomes a national hero when he bests the Third Reich’s heavyweight boxer, Max Schmeling, in a much-anticipated rematch for the World Champion title. Joe, a Black American, put all his work and heart into the rematch and ultimately secured the most meaningful victory in the sport’s history. He also loved horses and constructed a boxing ring and equestrian training center in Utica, Michigan. His involvement popularized saddle seat, and his city welcomed him home after the famous rematch with a horse show for Black competitors at Bell’s Academy in Utica. The tickets were in high demand and exhibitors came from as far as Chicago to participate.
Some of those exhibitors created their own Black horse show some months later with the first Midwest Horse Show Classic and nearly 2,000 spectators. Although slavery had officially ended nearly 100 years earlier, many Black horsemen still worked as trainers and caretakers. Many of these horsemen had also worked in the South, which meant they were familiar with saddle seat and helped it become more prevalent with every horse and rider combination they trained. This decade was the first time most of them had been allowed to present horses in the show ring, and throughout World War II Black-run horse shows were a joyous addition to the Performance sport.

CH King’s Genius, Bourbon King, Anacacho Shamrock, Noble Kalarama, Rex Firefly, Dazzling McDonald, and American Bourbon make notable marks on the Saddlebred breed during this decade.
1940s » 1948
CH Wing Commander wins his first Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championship and keeps this title for six years; the first of only two horses to accomplish this. He is also the grandsire to CH Sky Watch (who later claimed five WGCs) and maternal grandsire to CH Imperator (who claimed four).
1950s
Saddle seat competitions begin growing again as the country recovers from WWII. Arabian stud farms scattered during the war are rediscovered, and fresh stallions and mares are imported to North America.
The Arabian Horse Association of Arizona forms. Several years later, they host what becomes the first Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show.
CH The Lemon Drop Kid graces the cover of Sports Illustrated. The American Saddlebred Pleasure Horse Association forms.
The 14,000th Arabian is registered in the United States. The first U.S. National Championship classes are held at the Estes Park show.
1960s
Many of the barns, trainers, and lines we know today get their start during this decade. Greats include CH Will Shriver, Tom Moore, CH Yorktown, the Crabtrees, and Don Harris. By 1968, the United States has over 50,000 registered Arabian horses and would reach the 100,000th horse five years later.
1970s
The first Morgan Grand National and World Championship is held in Detroit, Michigan. Two years later, it moves to its current location in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. CH Caramac foaled in 1978.
1980s
The duels between CH Sky Watch and CH Imperator dominate the industry; in the three-gaited ranks, CH Sultan’s Starina reigns supreme for five years.
» 1952 » 1988 » 1957 » 1958
Donna Moore becomes the first woman to judge the World’s Championship Horse Show, and Michele Macfarlane becomes the first woman to win the World’s Grand Championship — aboard none other than CH Sky Watch.
1990s - Present Day
Saddle seat disciplines across all breeds begin to emphasize youth competitors. Greater attention is placed on riding programs, encouraging people to try saddle seat. In 2001, Undulata’s Nutcracker foaled.
Currently, ASHBA recognizes over 291,000 registered American Saddlebreds (with about 5,000 halfSaddlebreds), the AMHA recognizes 90,000 living Morgans, and the AHA registers 1,067,000 U.S. Arabians and Half-Arabians.

The 59th year of U.S. Nationals featured some exciting changes. The classes were filled as always, often requiring multiple splits to create more manageable finals, and the quality was top-notch.
But for the first time, exhibitors could compete in In-Hand Trail, which saw about 30 competitors in both the Arabian and Half-Arabian classes.
The Hoot N’ Holler Lounge opened for the first time, providing a gathering spot in the lower level of the Ford Truck arena. It was a welcome addition to a very busy show, which ran with the assistance of skilled staff and a slew of passionate volunteers. The contributions of all involved made the 2025 U.S. Nationals one for the books and showcased the best of the Arabian sport.

The Sweetest Reward
KATHERINE KIRBY & SD NUTTIN HONEY
BY HALEY EVANS
Katherine Kirby, long a star competitor in the Arabian and Half-Arabian English Pleasure divisions, has taken victory passes at U.S. Nationals before. But this year was the first time she clinched the tricolor after a workout; one that was particularly impressive given that the finalists were all multinational Champions.
Katherine and her mare, SD Nuttin Honey (“Honey”), first teamed up during the fall of 2020, when Katherine purchased the chestnut as a junior horse. “Honey and I have come a long way together,” Katherine recalls. “She’s always had the talent; we just needed time to grow.”
After years of searching for the right Half-Arabian English Pleasure horse, Katherine knew from the first ride that Honey was special. Bred and raised during her first four years by Katherine’s dear friend and Stachowski barnmate, Juliette Dell, Honey is a thoughtful cross of sire SF Aftershoc+ and Saddlebred dam Lismore’s Nuttin Better. Katherine was immediately drawn to the mare’s athleticism and heart, describing her as “the most athletic, determined, and game mare I’ve ever ridden—she gives her whole heart.”
Honey’s show career began prior to Katherine taking the reins, highlighted by her trip to U.S. Nationals in 2019, where she captured her first National Championship in the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Futurity with Jim Stachowski. Katherine began showing Honey in 2021, and their journey together has included its share of challenges and adjustments, making the progress and partnership they feel today especially meaningful.
“My approach [this year] was very much the same as usual,” Katherine admits. “I made my normal visits to the farm, and when I rode her leading up to the show, she was more in the zone than she’s ever been. She felt so happy, engaged, and ready to go — like she was over the practice rides and itching
for the ring. Every time I watched her, she looked extraordinary: sharp, honest, and completely locked in. When she’s like that, there’s truly no better feeling in the world,” she concludes. Honey did so well in the practice ring that when the pair headed to Nationals, the only thing Katherine could hope for was that they would bring the same energy into the big arena. She needn’t have worried. Honey put her best hoof forward, and when it came down to the workout, the judges called her, No Strings Attached, Nutcracker King MA, and Starrboy to make a final show. All four of these entries came to Tulsa with national titles, and the workout promised a demonstration of the best of the best. Katherine remembers that moment, and the following ride, with utter joy.
“I was completely shocked,” she says of the workout announcement. “I think I honestly blacked out for a second! It’s the kind of moment you dream about, and when it actually happens, it’s so surreal.” But once reality sank in, Katherine realized that she was barely concerned about the workout at all. “Honestly, [Honey] felt so good that I was almost excited the ride didn’t have to end — we got to do a little more! She wasn’t tired at all, so I just enjoyed the moment.” The crowd shared Katherine’s excitement, loudly cheering all four entries on as they went head-to-head.
That energy and enthusiasm carried them right into the winner’s circle. Katherine experienced another bout of disbelief when she heard the judges announce her and Honey as the National Champions, which quickly gave way to gratitude and pride. “I was overwhelmed with pride for Honey and deep gratitude for all the work Jimmy invested to get her there,” she remembers. “It was one of those truly unforgettable moments.”
Katherine and Honey earned the title through patience and persistence, supported by an incredible team along the way. “My gratitude to Jimmy and the entire Stachowski team is endless,” Katherine says. “None of this would be possible
without their hard work and belief in Honey. I’m also so thankful to my amazing parents for their support and encouragement.”
That faith, guidance, and encouragement from so many supporters vaulted Katherine and her mare to a once-in-a-lifetime achievement, and the love behind their remarkable win made it monumental.

JIM HITT AND LEGACY BLACK SABBATH++++//
BY NIKA OSUNA
When Mignon Stetman saw a photo online of a striking black 2-year-old colt from Legacy Arabians, she never dreamed of the journey the next four years would hold. Mignon was captivated by the youngster immediately, and couldn’t believe her luck when he was listed for sale a few months later. “I went straight to Jim [Hitt] and asked him to please come and see this horse with me,” she says. “We flew out to Dallas and I fell in love with his beauty and his goofy, toddler-like personality.” Mignon and Jim could tell he was special, and “Ozzy” was her Christmas present that year.
The choice to put him in training with Jim was an easy one for the Stetmans. Mignon and Jim met by chance at a small show in 2014, when they were stalled beside one another. They talked throughout the weekend, and Mignon moved her Western Pleasure gelding into training with Jim the very next week. Despite a four-year break from the show ring, Jim guided them to a Reserve National Championship that fall, confirming that Mignon had made the right choice in trusting him. One day, Jim suggested Mignon try Trail, challenging her preconceptions of the discipline. “Before I had ever ridden Trail,” she explains, “I thought it looked very easy and kind of boring… boy was I wrong!”
Since then, Mignon has developed a true love for Trail and the Working Western sport in general, and her young star followed suit almost immediately. Though she and Jim were confident in Ozzy’s talent, each trail pattern introduces new variables, especially for a young prospect. However, Ozzy took everything in stride, far exceeding his team’s expectations. In his first year at U.S. Nationals as just a 3-year-old, Ozzy won the Arabian Trail Junior Horse and Futurity National Championships with Jim. When Jim had a conflict with another arena, Gordon Potts stepped up to catch-ride Ozzy in the Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity, a moment of special pride for Mignon.
They earned a strong second in the qualifier and brought home a Top 10 in the final. The following year at Scottsdale, Mignon took the reins.
In the years that followed, Ozzy has only gotten more impressive. He now has eight National Champion titles to his name at only 6 years old, including three consecutive wins in the Western Trail Futurity. These wins also earned Jim the honor of retiring the APAHA Trainers Challenge Cup to his barn.
Not only has Ozzy proven himself a great Open competitor, but he has also successfully partnered with Mignon in Western Pleasure and Trail since his 4-year-old year. Mignon feels that this is the truest testament of Jim’s skill as a trainer. “What sets
Jim apart from other trainers is his approach with amateurs,” she explains. “I am lucky enough to live only 30 minutes away from his farm, so I get to ride three to four days per week. Jim wants his amateurs to ride and get to know their horses as much as they can. He sets up a full trail course twice a week; they are always different. I learn something pretty much every time I ride my horses, and I love the relationship I have with them.”
Legacy Black Sabbath++++//’s exciting career is a true testament to what can be achieved when a horse has a dedicated team who believes in him. With Mignon and Jim working together to keep him at his best, the future for this young star is a bright one.

MOMENTS & MEMROIES
BY HALEY EVANS
Champions Across Borders
GIN J++// AND HOLLY CONNAKER
Holly Connaker was practically born in the saddle; she rode her first horse with her mother at three weeks old. That first ride jumpstarted her love for Arabians. “[It] started with my mom,” Holly says, “and it grew from there. It wasn’t necessarily showing initially, but it ended up growing into that because she wanted me to learn how to ride better.”
Holly’s show career led her to training with Elizabeth “Lizzy” Seward at Bridlewood Farms, and Lizzy’s expertise led Holly to what would become the horse of a lifetime. She first met Gin J++// (“Gin”) early in 2017, when the gelding was a fuzzy 2-year-old who had just been brought in from the field. Despite not yet having that show-horse polish, his quality was evident in his movement. For Holly, the connection was immediate. “I just looked at him and I could see all the different bloodlines that I had admired growing up,” she explains. “I could see the Khadraj in there. I could see the Huck. When they asked him to trot, he just pulled his shoulders back and hooked up his neck.”
Though Holly looked at several other great prospects during her search, she kept coming back to “the Half-Arab at Larry’s.” Lizzy couldn’t have been more thrilled with Holly’s choice. She had seen Gin when he was only 6 months old, and she’d loved him from the beginning, but at the time didn’t have the right client for him.
Because Holly purchased Gin so young, both he and she needed development. Lizzy’s training method emphasizes kindness and fairness. Over years of Gin learning his job and Holly learning to treat him more like a teammate, she’s seen him blossom into an incredible partner. “I never thought I would own a horse like this,” expresses Holly, “and I never honestly knew that having such a strong connection with another animal was even possible. He is just so engaging. He connects so deeply with people.”
That connection created a more dialed-in mount, allowing Holly to use simpler, quieter movements that achieved bigger results. In Gin’s case, that culminated in eight 2025 National Champion titles in both the United States and Canada, earned with three different riders. This year, they decided to try adding side saddle with Anna Conway to Gin’s repertoire. He took to it beautifully and surpassed his team’s expectations at Canadian Nationals. Gin won all of his under-saddle classes, then experienced the same success at U.S. Nationals two months later. Holly’s handsome buckskin is no stranger to National victory passes, but 2025’s Championships were Gin’s best performances to date. In Canada, he topped the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR and ATR Elite Championships, the Ladies Side Saddle Western Championship, and the Open Western Pleasure Championship. In the States, he claimed another Side Saddle victory, the Western Pleasure AAOTR Jackpot and AAOTR 40-59 Championship, plus a second Open triumph.
“I was in disbelief,” Holly recalls. “I [thought], this doesn’t happen to anyone, or for any horse. Having the arbiters of the most prestigious shows recognize Gin overwhelmed Holly in the best way. “What an honor to own such an incredible animal, and have some incredible people surrounding me,” she explains. She’s grateful to her support team and to the judges for seeing her beloved Gin the same way she does, and was also absolutely thrilled for Lizzy. Not only had Lizzy’s training helped Gin into the winner’s circle, Lizzy rode him to the roses and a standing ovation in the Open Western Pleasure Championship, a high honor for a woman in a more male-dominated discipline.
“I’m just so grateful to this horse,” Holly concludes. “I’m grateful to God that he put this horse in my life and all of these people; grateful for my family and friends because of their support. Everyone at the horse shows — that’s my group of people that I love to be around. It’s good for the heart and the soul.”

Little Bit Of Boom+//
T2006 - 2025 REMEMBERING
he Western ranks are saddened by the unexpected loss of Little Bit Of Boom+// (“Uno”), a 26-time National Champion. Tracy Dowson’s gorgeous Half-Arabian gelding also earned 9 Reserve National Champion honors and 46 Top 10s; most recently gaining roses at the 2024 U.S. Nationals. He and Tracy cemented years of partnership by claiming highest honors in the Half-Arabian Limited Reined Cow Horse AATR, VRH Ranch Trail AATR, and VRH Limited Ranch Cow Work AATR Championships. This incredible team was also a fixture at the Ranch Horse Championships and Mid Summer Nationals, where they wowed the crowds and the judges with guidance from longtime trainer Jim Hitt.
Tracy purchased Uno in 2016, and by that point he already had a lengthy show record in the Western divisions — he gained his first ribbon at the 2010 Scottsdale show. The black gelding, by Boomernicker and out of Quais Habibi+//, was bred by Lauren and Kelly Whyte. He found a home with Amanda Noetzelman and the Cole family (Catherine Cole Ferandelli and Alexis Irene Cole) before making his way to Tracy, who cared for him for the rest of his life and loved him dearly.
For Tracy, Uno was truly one-of-a-kind — a horse of a lifetime! He took his job seriously, having a phenomenal work ethic yet a sweet, playful, fun-loving personality. He showed in the entire Working Western division: Trail, Ranch, Reining, and Cow classes. He willingly carried multiple owners and catch-riders over his career and was both a star in his field and a joy to all who knew him. He is already greatly missed. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE US: Witty, humorous, and dedicated.
WE WERE INTRODUCED TO HORSES THROUGH…
Shella was a horse lover for as long as she can remember and her dad bought her first horse for her when she was 10 years old. She showed in small local shows and 4-H as a kid. Her love of horses and her passion for showing stuck, so naturally Jessie started riding at a young age. Shella’s mom, Jessie’s grandma, was running a lot of the local, all-breed shows at the time and always found someone at the show who had a horse for Jessie to ride in the leadline classes. Even after falling off the horse face-first in her first-ever leadline class, Jessie was hooked too.
OUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SHARING THIS SPORT TOGETHER IS…
Nothing beats the feeling of watching each other’s success in the show ring while getting to experience everything we put into it together.
PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW…
We love spending time together and are best friends, but we can’t live together. We also want to start a mom/daughter podcast someday that highlights our unique relationship.
THE MOST DARING THING WE’VE EVER DONE: Jessie has been skydiving and Shella tried snowboarding for the first time ever at over 50 years old.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF OUR SHOW DAY ROUTINE:
Golf cart hype sessions before our classes while playing our favorite songs!
THE PERSON WHO INSPIRES EACH OF US THE MOST IS: Each other!

SOPHIE YIH
BY NIKA OSUNA
A multi-National Champion as a junior exhibitor, Sophie Yih has had two banner seasons as an amateur. Sophie has always been a master at managing a large string of show-ring partners, and this year was no exception. She brought four talented Arabians and Half-Arabians to Tulsa this year and came home with a brand-new National Championship, four reserve titles, and four additional Top 10s. However, though each of these accomplishments was special, one stood out among the rest: her Reserve National Championship in the Arabian English Show Hack Open final. This feat is impressive in and of itself for a 21-year-old amateur rider. However, the moment was made all the sweeter because it was shared with Sophie’s longtime trainer Jonathan Ramsay, who earned the Champion roses.
Sophie’s partner for the class, Heiritage TRGR+/, has been part of her life since 2019. Over the last six years, this team has earned 14 National Champion titles, making “Harry” a significant part of her formative years. This year’s U.S. Nationals carried extra emotion for this team, as it would be Sophie’s last time taking Harry into the Ford Truck arena before his wellearned retirement. If Sophie was unnerved by taking on a competitive Open class, it didn’t show, eclipsed instead by her connection and confidence with Harry.
For Sophie, this class in particular holds a special symbolism, marking both the close of a chapter shaped by this meaningful partnership as well as the turning of a page to an exciting new story. Being called to the reserve roses was just the icing on the cake. Fittingly, Sophie turned the page alongside the trainer who has guided her since she was 9 years old — Jonathan Ramsay. 12 years of dedication, trust, and growth culminated in a truly special moment that marked a rare full-circle finish honoring the horse who defined this chapter and the mentor who will help shape the next.

R.O. LERVICK
A DYNAMIC Shift
BY NIKA OSUNA
August 2024 marked an exciting new partnership for two longstanding names in the industry: Maritz Arabians moved from its sunny Arizona home to join ranks with the team at R.O. Lervick Arabians in Stanwood, Washington. Cari Thompson-Maritz and Dennis Wigren share over 25 years of friendship and a high degree of respect for one another as professionals, so when the time came for a change for both programs, the decision was an easy one.
Every member of the now-united R.O. Lervick (ROL) team brings something unique to the table. Linda Lervick has been at the helm of the program since its first foal was born in 1978, continuing to steward the dream she and her late husband Roger had of producing top quality Arabian horses. Cari has a long history of success with Hunters, with a thoughtful approach tailored to each horse, while Dennis has a precise hand with an English horse. Both trainers also bring extensive knowledge of the Western ring. With Cari’s husband Fanie offering training support across the seats, as well as using his expertise as a farrier on the in-house show string, R.O. Lervick offers a truly well-rounded, dynamic program and a combined 75 years of experience from its training team.
The new R.O. Lervick team.
“WHETHER THEY’RE HERE TO RIDE, WATCH A TRAINING SESSION, OR SIMPLY SPEND TIME WITH THEIR HORSE, OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE A SPACE THAT FEELS LIKE A SECOND HOME.”
— THE R.O. LERVICK TEAM
Linda, Dennis, Cari, and Fanie are also thankful for their dedicated team of assistants who play a vital role, from breaking colts to working horses and taking care of the seemingly mundane but important day-to-day tasks that keep the farm running as a well-oiled machine.
In the year that has followed the merger, this team has been instrumental in taking an already fantastic customer experience above and beyond. “Clients visiting R.O. Lervick Arabians can expect to step into an environment that is as warm and welcoming as it is professional,” they explain. “Whether they’re here to ride, watch a training session, or simply spend time with their horse, our goal is to create a space that feels like a second home.”
This approach has also fostered a deep connection amongst the ROL clients. Not only is the barn a second home, but the people are a second family. The farm’s atmosphere is accentuated by a strong sense of camaraderie and meaningful relationships. Whether at home or at a show, ROL clients can be found ringside, supporting one another during their rides.
This sense of family extends to the horses, too. The R.O. Lervick team treats each horse like their own, working to fulfill their individual needs. Each animal receives tailored care and an individualized training routine. This treatment of their clients and horses has paid off in spades in R.O. Lervick’s first full show season with its new team. The training program is larger than it’s ever been and has seen success across the board, from new horses and riders hitting the ring for the first time to seasoned amateurs taking National victory passes.
“We attended a record number of shows, brought more horses and riders than ever before, and saw that hard work translate into ribbons, roses, and unforgettable moments,” says the ROL team. “For many, it was a year of ‘firsts’ — first rides down the rail, first trips to Nationals, and for some, their first sets of roses. But more than anything, it was a year that reaffirmed our commitment to growth, excellence, and the incredible journey we’re on together.”
After a banner first year, growth is the goal for R.O. Lervick going forward. In addition to their established show string, they have exciting youngsters waiting in the wings and are committed to continuing to bring fresh new faces into the industry. Their commitment to their clients and amateurs remains the same, and Dennis, Cari, Fanie, and the rest of the team take pride in seeing those combinations’ successes. After a banner first year, R.O. Lervick is continuing to look onward and upward.
