he 59th year of U.S. Nationals featured some exciting changes. The classes were filled as always, often requiring multiple splits to create more manageable finals, and the quality was top-notch. But for the first time, exhibitors could compete in In-Hand Trail, which saw about 30 competitors in both the Arabian and Half-Arabian classes.

The Hoot N’ Holler Lounge opened for the first time, providing a gathering spot in the lower level

of the Ford Truck arena. It was a welcome addition to a very busy show, which ran with the assistance of skilled staff and a slew of passionate volunteers. BY HALEY EVANS Katherine Kirby, long a star competitor in the Arabian and Half-Arabian English Pleasure divisions, has taken victory passes at U.S. Nationals before. But this year was the first time she clinched the tricolor after a workout; one that was particularly impressive given that the finalists were all multinational Champions. Katherine and her mare, SD Nuttin Honey (“Honey”), first teamed up during the fall of 2020, when Katherine purchased the chestnut as a junior horse. “Honey and I have come a long way together,” Katherine recalls. “She’s always had the talent; we just needed time to grow.” After years of searching for the right Half-Arabian English Pleasure horse, Katherine knew from the first ride that Honey was special. Bred and raised during her first four years by Katherine’s dear friend and Stachowski barnmate, Juliette Dell, Honey is a thoughtful cross of sire SF Aftershoc+ and Saddlebred dam Lismore’s Nuttin Better. Katherine was immediately drawn to the mare’s athleticism and heart, describing her as “the most athletic, determined, and game mare I’ve ever ridden—she gives her whole heart.” Honey’s show career began prior to Katherine taking the reins, highlighted by her trip to U.S. Nationals in 2019, where she captured her first National Championship in the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Futurity with Jim Stachowski. Katherine began showing Honey in 2021, and their journey together has included its share of challenges and adjustments, making the progress and partnership they feel today especially meaningful. “My approach [this year] was very much the same as usual,” Katherine admits. “I made my normal visits to the farm, and when I rode her leading up to the show, she was more in the zone than she’s ever been. She felt so happy, engaged, and ready to go — like she was over the practice rides and itching

for the ring. Every time I watched her, she looked extraordinary: sharp, honest, and completely locked in. When she’s like that, there’s truly no better feeling in the world,” she concludes. Honey did so well in the practice ring that when the pair headed to Nationals, the only thing Katherine could hope for was that they would bring the same energy into the big arena. She needn’t have worried. Honey put her best hoof forward, and when it came down to the workout, the judges called her, No Strings Attached, Nutcracker King MA, and Starrboy to make a final show. All four of these entries came to Tulsa with national titles, and the workout promised a demonstration of the best of the best. Katherine remembers that moment, and the following ride, with utter joy. “I was completely shocked,” she says of the workout announcement. “I think I honestly blacked out for a second! It’s the kind of moment you dream about, and when it actually happens, it’s so surreal.” But once reality sank in, Katherine realized that she was barely concerned about the workout at all. “Honestly, [Honey] felt so good that I was almost excited the ride didn’t have to end — we got to do a little more! She wasn’t tired at all, so I just enjoyed the moment.” The crowd shared Katherine’s excitement, loudly cheering all four entries on as they went head-to-head. That energy and enthusiasm carried them right into the winner’s circle. Katherine experienced another bout of disbelief when she heard the judges announce her and Honey as the National Champions, which quickly gave way to gratitude and pride. “I was overwhelmed with pride for Honey and deep gratitude for all the work Jimmy invested to get her there,” she remembers. “It was one of those truly unforgettable moments.” Katherine and Honey earned the title through patience and persistence, supported by an incredible team along the way. “My gratitude to Jimmy and the entire Stachowski team is endless,” Katherine says. “None of this would be possible

without their hard work and belief in Honey. I’m also so thankful to my amazing parents for their support and encouragement.” That faith, guidance, and encouragement from so many supporters vaulted Katherine and her mare to a once-in-a-lifetime achievement, and the love behind their remarkable win made it monumental.

The Dream Team JIM HITT AND LEGACY BLACK SABBATH++++//

BY NIKA OSUNA When Mignon Stetman saw a photo online of a striking black 2-year-old colt from Legacy Arabians, she never dreamed of the journey the next four years would hold. Mignon was captivated by the youngster immediately, and couldn’t believe her luck when he was listed for sale a few months later. “I went straight to Jim [Hitt] and asked him to please come and see this horse with me,” she says. “We flew out to Dallas and I fell in love with his beauty and his goofy, toddler-like personality.” Mignon and Jim could tell he was special, and “Ozzy” was her Christmas present that year. The choice to put him in training with Jim was an easy one for the Stetmans. Mignon and Jim met by chance at a small show in 2014, when they were stalled beside one another. They talked throughout the weekend, and Mignon moved her Western Pleasure gelding into training with Jim the very next week. Despite a four-year break from the show ring, Jim guided them to a Reserve National Championship that fall, confirming that Mignon had made the right choice in trusting him. One day, Jim suggested Mignon try Trail, challenging her preconceptions of the discipline. “Before I had ever ridden Trail,” she explains, “I thought it looked very easy and kind of boring… boy was I wrong!” Since then, Mignon has developed a true love for Trail and the Working Western sport in general, and her young star followed suit almost immediately. Though she and Jim were confident in Ozzy’s talent, each trail pattern introduces new variables, especially for a young prospect. However, Ozzy took everything in stride, far exceeding his team’s expectations. In his first year at U.S. Nationals as just a 3-year-old, Ozzy won the Arabian Trail Junior Horse and Futurity National Championships with Jim. When Jim had a conflict with another arena, Gordon Potts stepped up to catch-ride Ozzy in the Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity, a moment of special pride for Mignon.

They earned a strong second in the qualifier and brought home a Top 10 in the final. The following year at Scottsdale, Mignon took the reins. In the years that followed, Ozzy has only gotten more impressive. He now has eight National Champion titles to his name at only 6 years old, including three consecutive wins in the Western Trail Futurity. These wins also earned Jim the honor of retiring the APAHA Trainers Challenge Cup to his barn. Not only has Ozzy proven himself a great Open competitor, but he has also successfully partnered with Mignon in Western Pleasure and Trail since his 4-year-old year. Mignon feels that this is the truest testament of Jim’s skill as a trainer. “What sets

Jim apart from other trainers is his approach with amateurs,” she explains. “I am lucky enough to live only 30 minutes away from his farm, so I get to ride three to four days per week. Jim wants his amateurs to ride and get to know their horses as much as they can. He sets up a full trail course twice a week; they are always different. BY HALEY EVANS Holly Connaker was practically born in the saddle; she rode her first horse with her mother at three weeks old. That first ride jumpstarted her love for Arabians. “[It] started with my mom,” Holly says, “and it grew from there. It wasn’t necessarily showing initially, but it ended up growing into that because she wanted me to learn how to ride better.” Holly’s show career led her to training with Elizabeth “Lizzy” Seward at Bridlewood Farms, and Lizzy’s expertise led Holly to what would become the horse of a lifetime. She first met Gin J++// (“Gin”) early in 2017, when the gelding was a fuzzy 2-year-old who had just been brought in from the field. Despite not yet having that show-horse polish, his quality was evident in his movement. For Holly, the connection was immediate. “I just looked at him and I could see all the different bloodlines that I had admired growing up,” she explains. “I could see the Khadraj in there. I could see the Huck. When they asked him to trot, he just pulled his shoulders back and hooked up his neck.” Though Holly looked at several other great prospects during her search, she kept coming back to “the Half-Arab at Larry’s.” Lizzy couldn’t have been more thrilled with Holly’s choice. She had seen Gin when he was only 6 months old, and she’d loved him from the beginning, but at the time didn’t have the right client for him. Because Holly purchased Gin so young, both he and she needed development. Lizzy’s training method emphasizes kindness and fairness. Over years of Gin learning his job and Holly learning to treat him more like a teammate, she’s seen him blossom into an incredible partner. “I never thought I would own a horse like this,” expresses Holly, “and I never honestly knew that having such a strong connection with another animal was even possible. He is just so engaging. He connects so deeply with people.”

That connection created a more dialed-in mount, allowing Holly to use simpler, quieter movements that achieved bigger results. In Gin’s case, that culminated in eight 2025 National Champion titles in both the United States and Canada, earned with three different riders. This year, they decided to try adding side saddle with Anna Conway to Gin’s repertoire. He took to it beautifully and surpassed his team’s expectations at Canadian Nationals. Gin won all of his under-saddle classes, then experienced the same success at U.S. Nationals two months later. Holly’s handsome buckskin is no stranger to National victory passes, but 2025’s Championships were Gin’s best performances to date. In Canada, he topped the Half-Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR and ATR Elite Championships, the Ladies Side Saddle Western Championship, and the Open Western Pleasure Championship. In the States, he claimed another Side Saddle victory, the Western Pleasure AAOTR Jackpot and AAOTR 40-59 Championship, plus a second Open triumph. “I was in disbelief,” Holly recalls. “I [thought], this doesn’t happen to anyone, or for any horse. Having the arbiters of the most prestigious shows recognize Gin overwhelmed Holly in the best way. “What an honor to own such an incredible animal, and have some incredible people surrounding me,” she explains. She’s grateful to her support team and to the judges for seeing her beloved Gin the same way she does, and was also absolutely thrilled for Lizzy. Not only had Lizzy’s training helped Gin into the winner’s circle, Lizzy rode him to the roses and a standing ovation in the Open Western Pleasure Championship, a high honor for a woman in a more male-dominated discipline. “I’m just so grateful to this horse,” Holly concludes. “I’m grateful to God that he put this horse in my life and all of these people; grateful for my family and friends because of their support. Everyone at the horse shows — that’s my group of people that I love to be around. It’s good for the heart and the soul.”

BY NIKA OSUNA A multi-National Champion as a junior exhibitor, Sophie Yih has had two banner seasons as an amateur. Sophie has always been a master at managing a large string of show-ring partners, and this year was no exception. She brought four talented Arabians and Half-Arabians to Tulsa this year and came home with a brand-new National Championship, four reserve titles, and four additional Top 10s. However, though each of these accomplishments was special, one stood out among the rest: her Reserve National Championship in the Arabian English Show Hack Open final. This feat is impressive in and of itself for a 21-year-old amateur rider. However, the moment was made all the sweeter because it was shared with Sophie’s longtime trainer Jonathan Ramsay, who earned the Champion roses. Sophie’s partner for the class, Heiritage TRGR+/, has been part of her life since 2019. Over the last six years, this team has earned 14 National Champion titles, making “Harry” a significant part of her formative years. This year’s U.S. Nationals carried extra emotion for this team, as it would be Sophie’s last time taking Harry into the Ford Truck arena before his wellearned retirement. If Sophie was unnerved by taking on a competitive Open class, it didn’t show, eclipsed instead by her connection and confidence with Harry. For Sophie, this class in particular holds a special symbolism, marking both the close of a chapter shaped by this meaningful partnership as well as the turning of a page to an exciting new story. Being called to the reserve roses was just the icing on the cake. Fittingly, Sophie turned the page alongside the trainer who has guided her since she was 9 years old — Jonathan Ramsay. 12 years of dedication, trust, and growth culminated in a truly special moment that marked a rare full-circle finish honoring the horse who defined this chapter and the mentor who will help shape the next.

Little Bit Of Boom+// T

he Western ranks are saddened by the unexpected loss of Little Bit Of Boom+// (“Uno”), a 26-time National Champion. Tracy Dowson’s gorgeous Half-Arabian gelding also earned 9 Reserve National Champion honors and 46 Top 10s; most recently gaining roses at the 2024 U.S. Nationals. He and Tracy cemented years of partnership by claiming highest honors in the Half-Arabian Limited Reined Cow Horse AATR, VRH Ranch Trail AATR, and VRH Limited Ranch Cow Work AATR Championships. This incredible team was also a fixture at the Ranch Horse Championships and Mid Summer Nationals, where they wowed the crowds and the judges with guidance from longtime trainer Jim Hitt. Tracy purchased Uno in 2016, and by that point he already had a lengthy show record in the Western divisions — he gained his first ribbon at the 2010 Scottsdale show. The black gelding, by Boomernicker and out of Quais Habibi+//, was bred by Lauren and Kelly Whyte. He found a home with Amanda Noetzelman and the Cole family (Catherine Cole Ferandelli and Alexis Irene Cole) before making his way to Tracy, who cared for him for the rest of his life and loved him dearly.

For Tracy, Uno was truly one-of-a-kind — a horse of a lifetime! He took his job seriously, having a phenomenal work ethic yet a sweet, playful, fun-loving personality. He showed in the entire Working Western division: Trail, Ranch, Reining, and Cow classes. He willingly carried multiple owners and catch-riders over his career and was both a star in his field and a joy to all who knew him. He is already greatly missed. She showed in small local shows and 4-H as a kid. Her love of horses and her passion for showing stuck, so naturally Jessie started riding at a young age. Shella’s mom, Jessie’s grandma, was running a lot of the local, all-breed shows at the time and always found someone at the show who had a horse for Jessie to ride in the lead line classes. Even after falling off the horse face first in her first ever lead line class, Jessie was hooked too. ugust 2024 marked an exciting new partnership for two longstanding names in the industry: Maritz Arabians moved from its sunny Arizona home to join ranks with the team at R.O. Lervick Arabians in Stanwood, Washington. Cari Thompson-Maritz and Dennis Wigren share over 25 years of friendship and a high degree of respect for one another as professionals, so when the time came for a change for both

programs, the decision was an easy one. Every member of the now-united R.O. Lervick (ROL) team brings something unique to the table. Linda Lervick has been at the helm of the program since its first foal was born in 1978, continuing to steward the dream she and her late husband Roger had of producing top quality Arabian horses. Cari has a long history of success with Hunters, with a thoughtful approach tailored to each horse, while Dennis has a precise hand with an English horse. Both trainers also bring extensive knowledge of the Western ring. With Cari’s husband Fanie offering training support across the seats, as well as using his expertise as a farrier on the in-house show string, R.O. Lervick offers a truly well-rounded, dynamic program and a combined 75 years of experience from its training team. The new R.O. Lervick team.

LERVICK TEAM Linda, Dennis, Cari, and Fanie are also thankful for their dedicated team of assistants who play a vital role, from breaking colts to working horses and taking care of the seemingly mundane but important day-to-day tasks that keep the farm running as a well-oiled machine. In the year that has followed the merger, this team has been instrumental in taking an already fantastic customer experience above and beyond. “Clients visiting R.O. Lervick Arabians can expect to step into an environment that is as warm and welcoming as it is professional,” they explain. “Whether they’re here to ride, watch a training session, or simply spend time with their horse, our goal is to create a space that feels like a second home.” This approach has also fostered a deep connection amongst the ROL clients. Not only is the barn a second home, but the people are a second family. The farm’s atmosphere is accentuated by a strong sense of camaraderie and meaningful relationships. Whether at home or at a show, ROL clients can be found ringside, supporting one another during their rides. This sense of family extends to the horses, too. The R.O. Lervick team treats each horse like their own, working to fulfill their individual needs. Each animal receives tailored care and an individualized training routine. This treatment of their clients and horses has paid off in spades in R.O. Lervick’s first full show season with its new team. The training program is larger than it’s ever been and has seen success across the board, from new horses and riders hitting the ring for the first time to seasoned amateurs taking National victory passes. “We attended a record number of shows, brought more horses and riders than ever before, and saw that hard work translate into ribbons, roses, and unforgettable moments,” says the ROL team. “For many, it was a year of ‘firsts’ — first rides down the rail, first trips to Nationals, and for some, their first sets of roses. But more than anything, it was a year that reaffirmed our commitment to growth, excellence, and the incredible journey we’re on together.” After a banner first year, growth is the goal for R.O. Lervick going forward. In addition to their established show string, they have exciting youngsters waiting in the wings and are committed to continuing to bring fresh new faces into the industry. Their commitment to their clients and amateurs remains the same, and Dennis, Cari, Fanie, and the rest of the team take pride in seeing those combinations’ successes. After a banner first year, R.O. History of the Trotting Breeds AN OVERVIEW

Baroque Period

(1600 - 1830 CE)

1747 Nathaniel Harrison imports a horse of Arabian, Barb, and Turkish ancestry to America, one of the earliest recorded horses of Arabian breeding on the continent. Europeans in North America begin breeding their imported European horses, particularly gaited “amblers” and “pacers” as well as English Thoroughbreds. Over time, settlers develop unique breeds that influence Saddlebreds: » Narragansett Pacer » Canadian Pacer » Morgan

1775 Colonial expansion and the creation of vast farms and plantations make horsemen focus on smooth-gaited horses that carry riders comfortably over long distances. A type develops that combines the size of a Thoroughbred with the smooth gaits and stamina of pacing breeds — “the American Horse.”

1789 The great Morgan foundation stallion Figure (the Justin Morgan horse) is foaled.

Over decades, the American Horse is further refined, development moves to the South, and it becomes known as the Kentucky Saddler, later renamed as the American Saddlebred.

1816 The first recorded exhibition of Saddle Horses takes place near Lexington, Kentucky.

1839

The earliest Saddlebred foundation sire, Denmark, is foaled. More than 60 percent of the horses in the first three registry volumes of the American Saddlebred Horse Association trace to his son, Gaines’ Denmark.

1850s

A. Keene Richard travels to the Middle East and returns with a string of Arabian stallions and mares, establishing a consequential breeding program that is unfortunately lost during the Civil War. » 1856 The St. Louis Fair hosts the first national horse show, and gaited horses show off their paces. » 1859 The great Saddlebred trainer Tom Bass is born into slavery in Boone County, Missouri.

1860s During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederate armies favor Kentucky Saddlers and Morgans for their endurance and comfortable gaits.

1870s After the Civil War, the popularity of horse shows as entertainment increases, and the saddle seat discipline formally develops. Morgan breeders begin crossing their horses with longer-legged breeds, developing a type more suitable for the saddle seat discipline. » 1877 Ulysses S. Grant visits the Sultan of Turkey, who gives him two Arabian stallions. One is later given to Randolph Huntington, who establishes the first purebred breeding program in the United States. » 1879 Tom Bass moves to Mexico, Missouri, and eventually opens a horse training operation. He’s known for his gentle methods and becomes one of the most-sought-after trainers in the country. Tom trains the influential stallion Rex McDonald (after the Lee brothers start him), helps start the American Royal, wins the World’s Championship on Miss Rex, and invents a curb bit still in use today.

The American Saddlebred Horse and Breeders Association forms (as the National Saddle Horse Breeders Association).

1893

Visitors to the Chicago World’s Fair are dazzled by Turkey’s exhibition of 45 Arabian horses, including the mare Nejdme and the stallion Obeyran — the first foundation animals in the studbook of the Arabian Horse Association.

Breaking Barriers

(1903 - PRESENT) 1908-1909

The Arabian Horse Club of America forms (now the Arabian Horse Association). Major breeders like Spencer Borden, W.R. Brown, W.K. Kellog, Roger Selby, Joseph Draper, J.M. Dickinson, and Henry B. Babson import Arabians from England, Spain, and Egypt during the first decades of the 20th century. In 1909, the Morgan Horse Club forms (now the American Morgan Horse Association).

1917 The Kentucky State Fair offers its first $10,000 Five-Gaited Stake and calls itself the World’s Championship.

1925 W.K.Kellogg Arabian Horse Center founded.

How Joe Louis and Black Horsemen Shaped Saddle Seat History Joe Louis becomes a national hero when he bests the Third Reich’s heavyweight boxer, Max Schmeling, in a much-anticipated rematch for the World Champion title. Joe, a Black American, put all his work and heart into the rematch and ultimately secured the most meaningful victory in the sport’s history. He also loved horses and constructed a boxing ring and equestrian training center in Utica, Michigan. His involvement popularized saddle seat, and his city welcomed him home after the famous rematch with a horse show for Black competitors at Bell’s Academy in Utica. The tickets were in high demand and exhibitors came from as far as Chicago to participate. Some of those exhibitors created their own Black horse show some months later with the first Midwest Horse Show Classic and nearly 2,000 spectators. Although slavery had officially ended nearly 100 years earlier, many Black horsemen still worked as trainers and caretakers. Many of these horsemen had also worked in the South, which meant they were familiar with saddle seat and helped it become more prevalent with every horse and rider combination they trained. This decade was the first time most of them had been allowed to present horses in the show ring, and throughout World War II Black-run horse shows were a joyous addition to the Performance sport.

1940s CH King’s Genius, Bourbon King, Anacacho Shamrock, Noble Kalarama, Rex Firefly, Dazzling McDonald, and American Bourbon make notable marks on the Saddlebred breed during this decade. » 1948 CH Wing Commander wins his first Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championship and keeps this title for six years; the first of only two horses to accomplish this. He is also the grandsire to CH Sky Watch (who later claimed five WGCs) and maternal grandsire to CH Imperator (who claimed four).

1950s Saddle seat competitions begin growing again as the country recovers from WWII. Arabian stud farms scattered during the war are rediscovered, and fresh stallions and mares are imported to North America. » 1952 The Arabian Horse Association of Arizona forms. Several years later, they host what becomes the first Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. » 1957 CH The Lemon Drop Kid graces the cover of Sports Illustrated. The American Saddlebred Pleasure Horse Association forms. » 1958 The 14,000th Arabian is registered in the United States. The first U.S. National Championship classes are held at the Estes Park show.

1960s Many of the barns, trainers, and lines we know today get their start during this decade. Greats include CH Will Shriver, Tom Moore, CH Yorktown, the Crabtrees, and Don Harris. By 1968, the United States has over 50,000 registered Arabian horses and would reach the 100,000th horse five years later.

1970s

The first Morgan Grand National and World Championship is held in Detroit, Michigan. Two years later, it moves to its current location in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. CH Caramac foaled in 1978.

1980s The duels between CH Sky Watch and CH Imperator dominate the industry; in the three-gaited ranks, CH Sultan’s Starina reigns supreme for five years. » 1988 Donna Moore becomes the first woman to judge the World’s Championship Horse Show, and Michele Macfarlane becomes the first woman to win the World’s Grand Championship — aboard none other than CH Sky Watch.

1990s - Present Day Saddle seat disciplines across all breeds begin to emphasize youth competitors. Greater attention is placed on riding programs, encouraging people to try saddle seat. In 2001, Undulata’s Nutcracker foaled.

Currently, ASHBA recognizes over 291,000 registered American Saddlebreds (with about 5,000 halfSaddlebreds), the AMHA recognizes 90,000 living Morgans, and the AHA registers 1,067,000 U.S. Arabians and Half-Arabians.
