Our Mission We believe the arts are essential to a complete human experience and to the creation of a vibrant, healthy community. TCAN serves the Metrowest region by increasing opportunities to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts. To this end, TCAN strives to present arts programs of the highest standard that are available to everyone. TCAN dedicates its resources to providing community access to diverse arts programs, reducing barriers to attendance, and building appreciation through arts education.

Annual Report 2014 We are pleased to report that 2014 was a year of positive growth and transition for the TCAN community, resulting in a stronger and more sustainable arts organization. For well over a decade, TCAN has worked to bring our community together by making Natick Center a social and cultural hub of Metrowest. With a small but dedicated staff, hundreds of willing volunteers and an intimate venue, we stayed true to our belief that the arts complete the human experience and foster the open expression of ideas that are the basis of a vibrant and healthy community. In 2014 TCAN presented over 180 performances that served a diverse audience while striving to exceed our high standards of excellence. Attendance grew to a new peak of 24,000 patrons, who enjoyed highlight performances by jazz artists Keiko Matsui and Stanley Clarke, songwriters Suzanne Vega and J.D. Souther, rock icon Dave Davies and the acclaimed acappella group Rockapella. We remained committed to community programming produced by local volunteers, who presented Folk Open Mic, Rock Off Main Street all-ages concerts, classical music concerts, visual art exhibits and community theatre productions by the TCAN Players. We continued our fundraising efforts on the $1.5M Generations Capital Campaign, which will expand our programming while making us a more financially viable organization. In 2014, our efforts were supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, who recognized our contribution to Natick Center by awarding TCAN a generous grant of $180,000. We begin 2015 at two-thirds of our goal, with nearly $1M in gifts and pledges toward the Campaign from a long list of generous donors. The year was marked by the departure of several members of our small staff. We recognize Marsha Showstead, Associate Director who served the organization since 2001, and Dave Massey, Facility Manager since 2006 for their many years of dedicated service to TCAN. Community Programs Director Laura Chadwell, Marketing Coordinators Anastasia Caras and Jessica DePalo also ended their tenure with our organization. We appreciate their commitment to our mission - all of them will be missed. I am eternally grateful to the members, patrons and sponsors who supported us, and the talented staff and volunteers who help create a Big Experience in this cherished Small Space.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS The Center for Arts in Natick delivered diverse, electrifying performances in its 17th year as a leading performing arts venue in MetroWest. From the riveting string performance by young classical music performer Xiang Yu, to the comedic stylings of former SNL designer Regina DeCicco, TCAN exploded with a new range of artists. We were joined by classic rock powerhouse Dave Davies of the Kinks, ending the year with a vibrant performance by ukulele guru Jake Shimabukuro at TCAN’s Annual Benefit. In 2014, TCAN hosted over 75 feature performances on our stage, attended by over 15,000 patrons from throughout New England and the East Coast.

February 28-March 9 Directed by Joe Stallone Written by Neil Simon In this remarkable coming-of-age story, two brothers are left to fend for themselves in a dysfunctional household with their formidable immigrant grandmother, sweet but simple-minded aunt, and a hoodlum of an uncle. This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning tale is simultaneously comic and poignant with Mr. Simon working not as king of the snappy one-liner, but from the heart, with depth of character, humanity and personal investment.

June 6-22 Directed by David Krentzman Written by Ken Ludwig It’s 1934 and The Cleveland Grand Opera company prepares to welcome the worldfamous tenor Il Stupendo for a sold-out, one night only performance in Giuseppe Verdi’s (Othello). When he arrives late, mild mannered Max must go on in Il Stupendo’s stead. What transpires is a Tony Award-winning farce full of mistaken identity, slamming doors, and bawdy humor.

Greene Produced by Faye Harrington & Margaret Umbsen Written by Ira Levin A down-on-his-luck playwright’s student tells him that he has written the perfect suspense play and will bring it to the playwright’s Connecticut home that night. The suspense over whether the playwright will kill the student and take credit for his play forms the crux of Ira Levin’s thriller. INSPIRED PERFORMANCES The TCAN Players community theatre group has performed three shows a year since their debut in 2001. An award-winning troupe, the Players produce worldrenowned dramas, comedies, and musicals. Engaging audiences and members of the cast and crew alike, this eclectic trio of performances, including Lost in Yonkers, Lend Me a Tenor, and Deathtrap, showcased the raw local talent of our community while drawing audiences from across the region. Community ART IS FOR EVERYONE TCAN serves the community by increasing opportunities to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts. TCAN stays true to its mission by providing various programs for local talent. We strive to better our community’s access to theatre, music, and visual art, while providing a supportive atmosphere where others can enjoy their work. Folk Open Mic provides opportunities for local musicians to share their music, while Rock Off Main Street, New England’s longest running music program for teens, brings young bands together from eastern Massachusetts, to get out of their garages and on to a professional stage complete with professional lighting and a state-of-the-art sound system. Visual Artists from Natick and surrounding areas are supported by TCAN’s Summer Street Gallery, showcasing nearly thirty unique works from local artists every month.

Downtown Cabaret, an all-ages open mic program, brought together the best vocal performers from across the region for a celebration of musical theater including original songs, Great American Songbook, and jazz standards. Musical Theater Teen Intensive Ages 13-17 This is a six-week process-based workshop for teens. The workshop provided an opportunity for local students to develop their talent with award-winning choreographer Kirsten McKinney and professional actor, Naomi Bailis.

IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY Celebrating 14 years of partnership, Pocket Full of Tales Theatre Company offered a wide range of education classes for children and teens, and Walnut Hill School for the Arts continued classes for teenagers in their Teen Theatre Intensives. A new class was also added to the list for 2014: an A Cappella workshop with instructor Deborah Marion. The Family Series reached new heights presenting unique performers such as Johnny Peers & the Muttville Comix – a rescue dog act complete with props, tricks, and treats. The Family Series continues to grow for these young families, expanding programming and drawing audience across New England.

MOVING FORWARD TCAN made significant progress toward strategic plan objectives to complete the restoration of the firehouse and improve the organization’s long term sustainability. The restoration project will expand TCAN’s programming to include film screenings and provide additional capacity for education programs, concerts, and community events. TCAN will enhance its financial stability by retiring the remaining capital debt from the first phase of restoration and establishing a capital reserve fund for building maintenance. TCAN named its project team, including two architectural firms – Design Labs of Cambridge and Milford & Ford Associates of Wellesley – led by Project Manager and TCAN Board member Michael Collins of D. Michael Collins Architects. The team evaluated design options, including theater features, location of concessions, and options for gains in energy efficiency.
CAMPAIGN BUDGET The goal for the Generations Capital Campaign is $1.5M with 72% of the budget allocated for the renovation and the rest for debt retirement and reserve funding. TCAN was honored to receive a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, supported by MA State Representative David Linsky and Senator Karen Spilka.

access A Smile In Every Seat
In partnership with several social service agencies in our region, TCAN distributes tickets and tuition vouchers to members of our community facing economic hardship or with special needs. In 2014, TCAN distributed tickets to more than 100 clients for 33 different events, including feature concerts, community theater, and Family Series programs. Scholarships were also granted for youth theater classes and summer camps. TCAN’s partners for the Smile in Every Seat program include these deserving organizations: Natick Community Services, Skyline Program Natick Service Council
ACCESS We believe the arts are important to creating a healthy community. Our mission is to increase opportunities for everyone to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts, including those with disabilities, and those who have experienced other barriers or challenges to engage in arts programming. Through TCAN’s Access program, donor contributions offset the cost of ticket vouchers, donations, discounts granted to seniors and students, and community events, so that more members of the community might engage in live performance. Every year, hundreds of tickets for TCAN events are donated to schools, community, and civic organizations. Our community benefits from subsidized facility rental fees for local nonprofit events and fundraisers as well, while the facility is also offered to music instructors for youth recital performances.
