OUR MISSION We believe the arts are essential to a complete human experience and to the creation of a vibrant, healthy community. TCAN serves the MetroWest region by increasing opportunities to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts. To this end, TCAN strives to present arts programs of the highest standard that are available to everyone. TCAN dedicates its resources to provide community access to diverse arts programs, reduce barriers to attendance, and build arts appreciation through arts education.

ANNUAL REPORT 2019 TCAN and the communities we support are interconnected. The music, theater and films we present are a reflection of the time we live in, and the diverse array of people who live, work and play in the cities and towns that surround us. In 2019, that audience grew to exceed 30,000 patrons of all ages, the largest audience we have seen since our founding in 1997. The year just ended was a powerful finale to a decade of growth and positive change for our organization.

In 2019, we celebrated another milestone by retiring the mortgage on the firehouse, reducing long-term debt to zero – a full eight years prior to the loan’s maturity date. This achievement not only saves the organization a substantial sum in interest payments, but will also enhance our ability to endure change, to take risks and retain key personnel.

Philanthropic support from individual constituents, local businesses and foundations allowed TCAN to continue presenting programs that serve our local community. These included arts and theater education programs for children, theater productions by the TCAN Players, and opportunities for local musicians and visual artists to share their work publicly. Our commitment, supported by the generosity of these donors, also enabled us to make our space available for local nonprofit fundraisers and distribute tickets to local families through the Natick Service Council and South Middlesex Opportunity Council.

Completing its third year of screening movies in the Cinema Room, TCAN has established itself as the region’s preferred art house cinema destination. Fans of great music were treated to WBCN and the American Revolution, the Elton John biopic Rocketman, an unforgettable performance by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin in Amazing Grace, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, David Crosby’s Remember My Name, rock documentary Echo In The Canyon and the personal and romantic Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love. 6

With leadership from Kristy Pace, Program Director of Pocket Full Of Tales Theatre Company, TCAN once again hosted the ever-popular Summer Theater Workshops for children ages 5-11, with over 270 students in attendance. Craig and Nicole Small, founders of School of Rock Natick partnered with TCAN to present recital performances by young rockers of all ages, as family and friends cheered them on. Younger children were inspired by an exciting lineup of family shows, jugglers, live music and the world of magic.

Theater in the United States is fortunate to have an active community theater culture, relying on local volunteers to produce live plays and musicals. Community theater contributes to the social capital of a community as it develops the skills, teamwork, community spirit, and artistic sensibilities of those who participate. Since 2001, the TCAN Players have represented our organization as the premier community theater group in the MetroWest region. Access to the arts is the foundation of TCAN’s mission. We strive to go beyond producing affordable programs in a wide variety of genres, by opening our doors to community events, arts programs, and fundraisers staged by local nonprofit groups. By performing on the TCAN stage, organizations like the School of Rock, Music Go Round and The Tobin School offer young students an experience that will be remembered and treasured for a lifetime. Hosting the Natick Education Foundation for its annual Shining Light Awards, and supporting an annual salon event with guest speakers from TedX Natick allow us to demonstrate our support for this incredible community, while offering a convenient Natick Center location for their programs. Community fundraisers organized by nonprofits from across the MetroWest region bring their passion and important missions to our stage. Captial Campaign donors DENISE NELKEN AND CRAIG ROSS
In 2013, TCAN launched the Generations Capital Campaign, with its goal to establish TCAN as a strong and sustainable organization capable of serving the region years into the future. At that time, TCAN still carried a significant burden of capital debt from the original 2001 restoration of the firehouse. The architecturally unique and beautiful second floor of the building was unfinished and used only for equipment storage. Several building repairs were postponed repeatedly due to a lack of capital funds. The campaign identified three ambitious objectives required to meet that goal: • Utilize the entire Firehouse facility to deliver arts programs, including the upper level • Retire all long-term debt related to the 2001 restoration • Establish the financial reserves necessary to protect and preserve the facility It was estimated that raising $1.2 million would allow TCAN to achieve these three objectives. But as plans for the project became more fully realized, these early estimates proved to be insufficient. The project was expanded to include a fully equipped digital cinema venue, a complete renovation of the lobby and concessions area, and completion of major capital repairs that had been postponed for several years. In the end, it would require nearly $1.8 million to complete the project without compromise.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN We are pleased to report that by the end of 2019, with the support of over 650 contributing families, businesses and foundations, the Campaign has raised $1,647,814 and achieved the following: • Completed a $1.3 million renovation creating a multipurpose space serving as a cinema screening room, function room and performance space • Retired TCAN’s entire capital debt, eight years prior to the loan maturity date, resulting in substantial savings for the organization • Invested in major capital repairs to our historic facility, including roofing, building foundation and concrete flooring • Provided initial seed funding for a $100,000 capital reserve fund Through this campaign, we learned that our community had been waiting for an opportunity for just such a collective initiative – which allowed us to exceed our goal together. With that support has come a surge of creativity in every part of our organization. Our cinema program has grown and expanded, along with our member population. You have turned hope into action, and you have our deepest gratitude. In May 2019, TCAN honored founders Lauren and Roy Komack with a formal dedication of the Cinema Room in their memory. The commemoration ceremony, attended by friends and family members, celebrated Lauren and Roy’s many contributions to our organization with an engraved brass plaque, and an emotional classical music composition performed by a student of Walnut Hill School for the Arts.
