Louis-François Cartier founded his brand in Paris in 1847 after taking over his master’s jewellery-making workshop at 29 rue Montorgueil. Nine years later the brand was launched into high society when Princess Mathilde, cousin of Emperor Napoleon III, purchased a piece of Cartier jewellery for the first time. This paved the way for the brand to reach the most elite members of French society.
Louis Cartier developed the brand’s first wristwatch in 1904 at the request of pioneering Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Alberto was a good friend of Louis and he expressed frustration at the impracticality of pocket watches when flying, since both hands had to be kept on the aircraft’s controls. Louis came up with a simple, elegant and practical wristwatch with a flat face and small, square bezel that allowed the time to be read at a glance. The watch was named the “Santos” and it became Cartier’s first wristwatch for men.
Up until the early 1900s, wristwatches were relatively uncommon and were worn predominantly by women. They were seen as bracelets rather than practical timepieces. Crude versions of wristwatches had been used in the military since the late 19th century, but these versions were bulky pocket watches attached to basic leather straps. Cartier’s Santos watch is therefore credited as being one of the first modern wristwatches for men.
In 1907, Cartier established a contract with French watchmaker Edmond Jaeger who agreed to exclusively supply the movements for the brand’s watches. The Santos collection didn’t go into mass production until 1911, by which point there was a huge demand for this iconic square watch. Since then, Cartier has become known not only as an influential jeweller but a pioneering watchmaker, and the brand’s designs have had a major influence on the evolution of wristwatch style over the last century.

For Cartier, it all starts with the design. An uncompromising feature. The line is clean and precise. This radical design concept, implemented by one of the only Maisons capable of creating a unique collection of iconic watchmaking pieces, will become Cartier’s signature. Tank, Santos, Panthère or Ballon Bleu: instantly recognisable, these watches are based on four main principles of creation: the purity of the line, the accuracy of the shape, the precision of proportions, the precious details.

Small model, high autonomy quartz movement, steel, diamonds, leather
The intelligence of their design places them seamlessly within their time as well as securing their future. They can all be reinvented and continue to inspire conversations: a boundless source of creative energy which Cartier dares to develop over time.

A Cartier watch is always in style: fully paved with diamonds, a combination of gold and steel, monochrome gold, simply steel, classic watchmaking or seen as a piece of precious jewellery.

In leather, metal, non-animal material, or with an interchangeable mechanism, the Cartier bracelet or strap is the finishing touch that sets the tone of your watch.

In 1958, the Ovale cintré watch first appeared, baptised in 1973 with the name of Baignoire. The elegance of its lines makes it a signature watch, chosen for the timelessness of its French chic.

The Cartier Baignoire has its roots in a design first produced by Louis Cartier in 1912, which evolved into the trademark rounded silhouette of today in 1958. Many assume the Cartier Baignoire takes its name for the French for “bathtub”, reflecting its unique elongated oval shape. It’s more likely however that the Cartier Baignoire title pulls more aesthetic and contextual influence from the namesake VIP seats at the opera.

This design was a bold departure from the more traditional round watches of the era and demonstrated Cartier’s commitment to innovation and artistic expression. Over the years, the Cartier Baignoire has evolved, incorporating contemporary touches while retaining its classic charm.

With its sculptural case and polished bracelet, the Ballon Bleu defies gravity with its ethereal charm. The blue bubble of the winding crown disrupts the Maison codes, while Roman numerals and bold sword-shaped add to its limitless elegance.

The Ballon Bleu de Cartier was launched in 2007, adding a fresh, contemporary twist to Cartier’s prestigious lineup. The name “Ballon Bleu” translates to “Blue Balloon,” inspired by the unique blue sapphire cabochon crown that appears as if it’s floating on the side of the watch, encased in a protective arch. The soft rounded shape of the Cartier Ballon Bleu also offered a nice contrast to the longstanding rectangular models in the Cartier watch range like the Cartier Tank and Cartier Santos. It also makes it a very comfortable watch for day-to-day wear.

The result of Cartier’s work on shapes, this watch combines savoir-faire from Cartier watchmakers and jewellers alike.

It all starts with the open bracelet’s unprecedented generous architecture, which blends openwork and polished reflective gold with elongated lines and defined edges. Tension culminates as a delicate dial meets its reflection, where time appears to move backwards.

First created in the 1980s, the Panthère watch takes its name from the bracelet. Its ultra-flexible structure echoes the movements of the Maison’s emblematic animal.

The Panthère was first launched in 1983, although the Panther theme has been a key part of the Cartier brand since 1914 when an onyx and diamond Panther bracelet was launched. The Panthère watch has a square case with rounded corners, elongated lugs and a link bracelet that resembles brickwork. It’s a more elegant and luxurious interpretation of the brand’s original wristwatch.

SIHH 2016 was a restrained affair, most brands playing a game of wait-and-see with the global luxury watch market. One exception was Cartier. Its Drive de Cartier stood out – a dedicated men’s collection that took Cartier’s classic style and put it in a new cushion-shaped case that’s masculine without quite as much testosterone as the dive watch or the sports chronograph. No, the Drive is a watch with nothing to prove. It’s a watch confident in its identity. Think James Dean in East of Eden.
Threecalibres power the Drive de Cartier watch: the 1904-PS MC, the 1904-FU MC for the small complication, and the 9452 MC for the Fine Watchmaking version. All three are produced at the Cartier Manufacture. The calibre 1904 MC, created in 2010, was among the first movements conceived, developed and assembled by the Cartier Manufacture. The care lavished on calibre 1904 MC, with refined finishes such as the Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges and the oscillating weight, or the polished screw-heads, attests to the high standards of quality to which Cartier holds its movements. This 11 ½ line calibre has been designed to maintain perfect chronometric stability, harnessing a double barrel system to ensure consistency of the mainspring torque over a long period. Fitted with a fine regulating system, the calibre was conceived for the Manufacture to perfectly adjust its chronometry and guarantee that it runs with great precision.
