As you open this year’s Annual Report, I invite you to join us in celebrating the faithfulness of God and the impact of His work at MCS. From our founding, our mission has been clear and unwavering: to build a firm foundation through Christ-centered education. This commitment extends beyond academics or school-wide initiatives it is our deepest prayer for every student, that their foundation would be strong because it is built upon Jesus Christ.

The stories you will read in these pages are not simply updates or statistics; they are living testimonies of God’s goodness They reflect answered prayers, transformed hearts, and the steady shaping of young lives into leaders who walk with integrity and faith They are celebrations of all God has done in and through Mariners Christian School

This past year we were guided by the theme “Abide in the Vine” (John 15:5), a reminder that apart from Christ we can do nothing, but when we remain in Him, we bear much fruit. That truth has been evident in countless ways in classrooms, chapel, in community service, and in the daily rhythms of life on campus

Strategic Plan Firm Foundation: A Strategic Plan for a Flourishing Future

Since launching the MCS Strategic Plan in 2022, our community has witnessed God’s faithfulness and the impact of intentional planning in extraordinary ways. The plan has served as our roadmap—guiding us to pursue excellence in both academics and faith while remaining steadfast in our mission and anchored in our core values. Over the past two years, the dedication of our staff, leadership, and community has brought remarkable progress, with milestones that have strengthened MCS and positioned us for a flourishing future. Together, we are seeing the vision come to life.

Among the many accomplishments, MCS secured dual accreditations (WASC and CESA) with exceptional ratings, expanded student support services in academics and wellness, launched the first-ever middle school Academy of the Arts, and deepened our commitment to spiritual formation by adding a campus pastor We also strengthened development practices, refreshed and refined our Strategic Plan with valuable community feedback, and launched the Lion Fund to support our mission with excellence. Each of these achievements represents a step forward in equipping students with a Christcentered education of the highest quality, and we celebrate this progress as the foundation for what comes next.

In the spring, we launched our newly refined plan Firm Foundation: A Strategic Plan to Secure a Flourishing Future. Rooted in our steadfast mission, this plan narrows our focus to the most impactful priorities identified through community feedback and careful study. It ensures that every step we take continues to strengthen Christ-centered education, equipping students to thrive academically, spiritually, and personally

The plan centers on two bold initiatives: Fortifying the Cornerstones of Excellence— expanding academic strength, empowering teachers, and ensuring every student has the resources to succeed and Securing Our Decidedly Christian Legacy providing the financial foundation to sustain our mission, preserve affordability, and safeguard MCS as the only remaining covenant school in Orange County. Together, these initiatives ensure that MCS not only continues to provide exemplary academics but also remains unwavering in its commitment to unapologetically Christ-centered education for generations of families to come.

Biblical Worldview Integration

Our Love for Christ is foundational to everything we do at MCS. It begins with building a spiritual foundation for students to own and grow an authentic faith and moves outward to service.

Last year, every MCS teacher, specialist, and aide from TK through 8th grade participated in Biblical Worldview Integration training, equipping them to intentionally weave God’s truth into every subject, lesson, and interaction Guided by the CHAMP framework Creation, Humanity, Almighty God, Moral Order, and Purpose staff were equipped to help students develop a worldview rooted in Scripture rather than culture. By ensuring that biblical integration is not compartmentalized but central to all learning, MCS is shaping students to think Christianly in every area of life, growing in wisdom, discernment, and a firm foundation in God’s truth.

Nativity Emphasis Week

Middle School had its second year of Nativity Emphasis Week to celebrate the birth of Jesus. This time encouraged students to lean into their relationships with Jesus, demonstrate their love for Him, and approach the season with the peace and love God provides through His son The students gained deep insights making meaningful connections to the blessings of love, peace, hope, and joy that Jesus brought to the world.

Making a Difference for the Kingdom

Through the Difference Makers program, participating students raised over $1,000 for both St. Jude's Hospital and KURE It Cancer Research. Three students started clothing lines to help raise funds for organizations like Easter Seals, Hope Harbour and the U.S. Soccer Foundation. One of our students partnered with Olive Crest to make Easter baskets for foster children Two of our students organized supply drives for Mercy House to help those struggling with homelessness.

Spiritual Emphasis Week

Spiritual Emphasis Week was a special time set apart during Holy Week to intentionally focus hearts and minds on Jesus. Students from TK through 8th grade were invited to grow in their understanding of God’s great love and to respond with gratitude and faith. The Spiritual Emphasis Week theme was CHOSEN from John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you…” and 1 John 3:1, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we were!”

MCS Gives Back: Salute to Veterans

Proceeds from Middle School’s annual Pancake Breakfast, were presented to Southland Honor Flight in the amount of $6,500. Southland Honor Flight provides veterans with an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. The students’ dedication and hard work in raising these funds demonstrated their gratitude and respect for those who have served our country.

Spiritual Leadership

For the first time in MCS’ history, we were blessed to welcome the addition of our Campus Pastor, Taylor Bedoya. Taylor was committed to creating an environment where faith and learning went hand in hand Her leadership enriched our school, helping to cultivate a vibrant love for Christ in each student. In addition, MCS brought on new Worship Director, Tim Craig, who has captured the hearts of all our students over the last year.

Triple Accreditation: A Distinction of Excellence

This year, Mariners Christian School reached an exciting milestone earning accreditation through Cognia, joining our existing accreditations with WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and CESA (Council on Educational Standards and Accountability). Expanded Transitional Kindergarten

Last year, a third Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class was added! This expansion reflected the growing demand for early childhood education at MCS and allowed more families to experience the strong academic foundation, Christ-centered teaching, and nurturing environment that TK provides. With three TK classes now available, MCS is better equipped to support young learners as they begin their educational journey and prepare for success in kindergarten and beyond.

Elementary School 2024-2025 MAP Scores

In Math, elementary students scored in the 80th percentile, a strong indicator of academic excellence. Within this percentile, 81% of students performed above or well above the national norm. In Reading, elementary also achieved a score in the 80th percentile, with 78% of students performing above or well above the national norm.

Congratulations to the 15 graduates who were awarded the esteemed Distinguished Scholar award. Earning this award requires the student maintain a 4.0 GPA across all three years of Middle School, participate in the highest level of academic courses, and complete Spanish I.

Alumni Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to our 2024–2025 Alumni Heritage Scholarship winners: Kayla Smith, Alexia Tatoulian, and Olivia Bolt. Each recipient was awarded $2,000 in recognition of their outstanding achievements. Kayla is pursuing her studies at the Interior Design Institute, Alexia is attending Texas Christian University, and Olivia is enrolled at the University of Georgia.

The 2024–2025 Be Brave Scholarship was awarded to Grace Pedranti, who is currently attending Biola University Grace received a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of her dedication and academic excellence.

Elementary Professional Development

The elementary goal is to strengthen mathematical mindsets and instructional practices through the continued implementation of research-based math pedagogy across TK-5 grades. Teachers focus on how the brain learns math through the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract progression. Last Spring, TK-5 grade teachers participated in professional development through the UCI Math Project to deepen student mathematical reasoning through number talks and discourse, and implement strategies that promote conceptual understanding of major math topics. Additionally, parent education workshops were offered and will continue to be offered to support families in fostering number sense and reasoning at home.

Middle School Professional Development

Members of the Middle School Instructional Leadership Team participated in two targeted professional development experiences aligned with the divisional goal of advancing data-driven instruction. The team focused on ensuring all students demonstrated proficiency in essential math and English standards while strengthening practices that foster a positive, success-oriented school culture Collaborative efforts among administrators, the instructional coach, and lead teachers emphasized effective strategies for intervention, enrichment, and the use of formative assessments to improve learning outcomes. Teacher education specialists and interventionists also engaged in professional development to enhance the school’s Response to Intervention (RTI) framework and provided tiered academic support. These initiatives collectively advanced our mission of Building a Firm Foundation through Christ-Centered education, rooted in our core values of Love for Christ and Exemplary Academics

Whole-Child Focus

A MCS education focuses on the development of the whole child offering a wide array of enrichment experiences to ignite student passions and inspire an innovative spirit.

New Counseling Services at MCS

As part of our commitment to supporting the whole child academically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually MCS introduced new counseling services on campus. Through a partnership with Vanguard University’s Graduate Program in Psychology, graduate-level students working toward licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists or Professional Clinical Counselors began providing valuable counseling support Students greatly benefitted from these services, gaining tools to navigate challenges, build resilience, and thrive in every area of life.

Learning on the Road

Julian – A NEW Tradition for 4th Grade

Our fourth-grade students participated in an extended-day California History Experience in Julian. This new experience deepened students’ understanding of Westward Expansion and the California Gold Rush through hands-on learning. With the support of Eagle Mining Co and Fort Cross Old Timey Adventures, students explored a mine that first opened in 1870, learned about Julian’s rich mining history, and even tried their hand at gold panning. The day concluded with a lively jug band hoe-down featuring line dancing and laughter. This memorable event launched a new tradition that built community while bringing history to life.

6th Grade Science Camp

Pine Valley Science Camp had always been a highlight for sixth-grade students, and last year’s trip was no different. Being away from the hectic schedules of everyday life had allowed the kids to lean into God in a fresh way. They experienced God through His creation, bonded during worship sessions, and learned more about God the Maker through science classes Students returned from the trip with a noticeable hunger to deepen their relationship with Jesus.

8th Grade Washington DC Trip

The 8th grade Washington DC trip is the pinnacle of the MCS experience, as our students travel to the East Coast to bring what they are learning about in their classrooms to life. We partnered with ACTS, a Christian tour company, who allowed us to experience the trip through a Christian worldview, as students were directly confronted with the reality of God’s hand in the formation of our country. In addition, these young men and young ladies learned about the honor, dedication, and sacrifice of our military, and expressed their gratitude to all veterans and current military members God placed in our path Last year God used this trip to bond the 8th grade class through shared experiences, growth in independence, and maturity in faith.

Magic Through Music

In a field trip that blended education, inspiration, and a whole lot of Disney magic, 86 middle school students traveled to Disneyland to participate in the renowned Disney Imagination Campus in an unforgettable day of creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning in the most magical classroom on Earth

A special highlight of the day was a brand-new class called “70 Years of Magic Through Music,” in which 26 students had the unique opportunity to explore how music has shaped Disneyland from its opening day to today. Through guided experiences and behind-the-scenes insights, students discovered how music transforms storytelling and evokes emotion in not only the attractions but throughout the parks

Mariners Academy of the Arts in the Spotlight

Academy Art students had the opportunity to submit art to a district wide art showcase in their 7th and 8th grade year Judges for this showcase included art professors from local colleges and universities, as well as Department of Education personnel. Last year - four of our academy students’ art pieces were chosen for exhibit at South Coast Metro, and three were selected for display at the Laguna Arts Festival Junior Exhibit this summer. Congratulations to Sydney Chang, Olivia Nguyen, Lauren Yoo, and Joshua Kim!

Athletics

Last year was an incredible year for sports at MCS. Middle School saw 92 boys and 72 girls participate in the program, reflecting the school’s commitment to providing opportunities for students to explore athletics in the early years and develop their skills through 8th grade. Several teams achieved remarkable success, with many earning league championshipsThe year ended celebrating students who on and off the field displayed Christlike sportsmanship, character, and athletic development

Bah, Humbug! A Scrooge's Christmas Carol

In a dazzling blend of theater, tradition, and culinary charm, 34 middle school performers and 8 tech crew students at MCS brought the holiday season to life with Bah, Humbug! A Scrooge’s Christmas Carol, a dinner theater experience that left audiences raving.

Last spring, the MCS stage was transformed into the magical world of Neverland as 36 talented middle school performers and 8 dedicated tech crew students brought Peter Pan Jr. to life in a production that truly soared... literally!

Elementary Musical

In a heartwarming and unforgettable production, seventy-eight 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders took the stage last Fall to bring the underwater world of Finding Nemo Jr. to life! With two sold-out performances, the young cast dazzled audiences with their energy, creativity, and incredible teamwork.

Supported by dedicated staff, dozens of parent volunteers, and a crew of 11 middle school helpers, Finding Nemo Jr. was a celebration of creativity, and a shining example of what can happen when kids are given a stage and the freedom to shine.

First Academy of the Arts Showcase

Last year was a landmark moment for the Mariners Academy of the Arts: for the very first time, a class of students completed the full three-year program. As 8th graders, Academy students took on capstone projects ambitious, culminating works that reflected the skills and creativity they had developed throughout their journey

In May, the Academy hosted its inaugural Academy of the Arts Showcase, a school-wide celebration of creativity and performance. The evening featured live music from the Band and Orchestra, dynamic theater scenes and musical numbers, and a gallery-style exhibition curated by Fine Art students. Families, staff, and community members were amazed by the talent, passion, and professionalism on display.

Music to Our Ears

Last Year, our 5 grade Orchestra competed in the UK International Music Competition and took 1 Place! th st In addition, Students Olivia Chang and Jedidiah Chen were selected by All Southern California Orchestra by audition (competing against other students in Southern California) to perform in the music festival Jedidiah Chen was then chosen as the Concertmaster of the orchestra!

The Lion Fund

Connected Community

Being connected has always been an important hallmark and core value of MCS and it continues to be a priority for all members of the community.

Last year, we were excited to introduce The Lion Fund, formerly known as the Annual Fund. This long-established legacy of generosity remains the most important annual giving initiative for Mariners Christian School. Providing an exemplary Christian education requires significant financial investment that cannot be provided by tuition alone. The Lion Fund was crucial in bridging the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of delivering the highest quality, Christ-centered education. This initiative funds four pillars of excellence that define the MCS experience: exemplary academics, capital improvements, innovative resources and technology, and tuition assistance. Through generous unrestricted contributions, over $683,000 was raised through the Lion Fund.

Grandparents and Special Friend Day

Grandparents and Special Friend Day at MCS was a meaningful celebration of the special bond between students and their grandparents. Guests were invited into classrooms to see student work and experience a bit of everyday life at MCS The morning also included an adorable program featuring student performances It was a joyful day filled with connection, laughter, and lasting memories for all who attended. We thanked all of the grandparents and special friends for attending. It truly meant so much to the students.

Through this year’s Fund a Need, Ignite Imagination, we raised funds in the amount of $187,000 to invest in the heart of innovation at MCS our enrichment programs in Art, Music, Theater, Maker Education, Technology, and Physical Education. Thanks to the incredible generosity of MCS families and God’s provision, the funds raised through Ignite Imagination last year are being invested in state-of-the-art resources, innovative instruction, and inspiring opportunities that will ignite curiosity and creativity in our students.

This dedicated space quickly became a favorite spot on the playground, offering creative and engaging activities that encourage connection, imagination, and fun. PTF had a phenomenal year, overflowing with energy, creativity, and heart! They hosted more than a dozen incredible events that blessed MCS staff, students, and families alike. The year teed off with the MCS Golf Classic at Mesa Verde Country Club an unforgettable kickoff that set the tone for a year filled with community, generosity, and joy. From there, the momentum only grew! Back-to-School Bingo was a night to remember and the Father-Daughter Dance drew over 400 attendees for an evening of fun and memories. Other acts of kindness included a sunny, love-filled Staff Appreciation Week, snack cart deliveries, thank-you lunches, and Sunshine Mondays for staff. In addition, PTF graciously provided a Student Spirit Store where all proceeds were donated to the Difference Makers program

PTF kept school spirit soaring by modernizing the Middle School and Elementary teacher lounges., purchased new staging and curtains, and donated $30,000 towards our Fund-A-Need, Ignite Imagination, providing state of the art technology to our Worship Center.

PTF was truly a gift to the MCS community radiating joy, gratitude, and servant-hearted love in everything they did.

Last year, a fifth grade student, Evan Vasquez, won “Best in Class” for the cardboard creation at the OC Fair for Imaginology. A third grade student, Preston Shields won “Best in Class” for the poster contest!

A commitment to innovation fosters creativity and ingenuity to enhance student passions and talents.

At MCS, our commitment to fostering a culture of innovation is reflected in the dynamic collaborations between grade-level teams and our Makerspace program, where creativity and technology come together to enhance student learning. Last year in fourth grade, students participated in building California Missions, a hands-on project that now incorporates cuttingedge technology - thanks to Makerspace. With guidance from Mrs. Pfaff, students brought their mission models to life by recording informative audio segments that explain various features of their structures, transforming selected models into interactive teaching tools proudly showcased at our spring Open House. In second grade, innovation takes the form of entrepreneurship through the Mariners Marketplace, where students applied business principles to create and sell goods or services. They learned to adjust pricing in real time to maximize profits. These cross-disciplinary projects exemplified how MCS continues to integrate meaningful, real-world applications into classroom learning, keeping innovation at the heart of our educational mission

Committed to upholding our mission as a Christian School for Christian families, the MCS application process continued to focus on the family’s spiritual life and daily faith and required unanimous approval by the Admissions Committee. A major indication that we are fulfilling our mission is evidenced by our re-enrollment rate which was 96%!

A Year of Growth and Exciting Upgrades

Facilities & Campus Operations

Last year was full of exciting changes at MCS. From major security upgrades to new operational improvements, safety remained a top priority. One highlight was the brand-new ESP Enrichment Center at the north end of campus—giving the Extended School Program its very own home for staff and students to learn and grow together

The school also introduced a Capital Reserves Program to plan ahead for campus needs. Through it, MCS tackled important projects such as new fencing along the field, fresh blacktop repairs, and a campus-wide slurry and striping refresh that gave the grounds (and parking lot) a much-needed facelift. Each of these improvements strengthened the foundation of its Christ-centered education, ensuring MCS remains a safe, welcoming, and thriving place for every student.

As I step into retirement, my prayer is for this community to continue flourishing May Mariners remain a place where Christ’s love is at the center, where students grow in character and courage, and where families and staff walk in unity and purpose. May this school always feel like a second home rich in love, learning, and a mindset that inspires each child toward the future God has planned for them. "Let all that you do be done in love " – 1 Corinthians 16:14

As Paul said in Colossians, “I always thank God” when I pray for MCS. Thank you, God, for the school’s love for Christ, His people, and His truth Thank you for the lives that have been touched for eternity (including mine) through relationships that began there. Continue to draw students, staff, families, and alumni close to Christ. “Let [their] roots grow down into Him, and let [their] lives be built on Him. Then [their] faith will grow strong in the truth [they] were taught, and [they] will overflow with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:7), to the glory of God

My prayer for MCS is the continued and constant need for the staff, parents, and children to abide in Christ, always. To draw closer to the One in whom we find life, strength, wisdom, and peace I always felt the comfort in knowing Mrs Harrison made decisions that were strengthened by the Lord! I know this school has been and will always be Blessed. Thank you MCS for giving me the 18 years of continual seeking the Lord and growing his fruit with humble spirits.

Lord, You have abundantly blessed MCS through the years "immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine " Help us to continue to honor You by how we love You, how we seek to follow Your Word, and how we pursue teaching and training the next generations with joyful intent for Your Kingdom - academically, spiritually, socially and emotionally. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit "at work in us for Your good pleasure." We are deeply thankful for Your hand of blessing on our campus, staff and families. As we rejoice over the previous year, but look expectantly to what is ahead, let Zephaniah 3:17 be true of MCS: "The Lord your God is in your midst...He will take great delight in you; He rejoice over you with singing and He will calm you with His love."
