NEW WILDLIFE PENINSULA SIGNAGE BY CANBE CANBE (Community Association for Nassau Bay Enhancement) has designed and produced great new signage for the Nassau Bay Wildlife Peninsula. The brutal Texas summers had faded the large blue entrance sign, and the protective plastic was broken and yellowing. Angela Braun suggested replacing the sign to the CANBE Board of Trustees, and the vote was unanimous. Mike Magnan started the design in January, and after consultations with City Manager Paul Lopez, the project expanded to include replacements for the smaller signs on the entrance fence, and perhaps a large entrance gateway in the future. Along the way, other valuable input was received from Former Mayor Mark Denman, Parks Director Kirk Clawson, Animal Control Officer Troy Bradfield, the Garden Club, and CANBE Board Members. The new main sign mentions more flora and fauna and has a satellite view of the peninsula with bench locations, and distances. The new sign outside the gate combines the information that was on the 4 white signs on the fence, and several yards down the trail there is a new warning sign about potential dangers along the walk. All signs feature the brown color used on National Park signage across America, which gives the entrance area a less obtrusive look. A few years ago, Girl Scout Troop 140135 created informational signs for the 4 bench locations, but they became very faded over time. CANBE designed new signs with additional information: peninsula map with bench locations and distances, no-pets notice, 911 emergency reminder, homage to the Girl Scouts and other helpful information. Mayor Phil Johnson commented, “The new signage for the peninsula truly adds to the experience when venturing out onto this natural beauty and wildlife area. Many thanks go to everyone who helped make this happen including City Staff, City volunteers, and particularly CANBE. They have worked hard to make Nassau Bay more beautiful and livable and this project significantly contributes to that end. Please everyone enjoy our peninsula and the City looks forward to working with CANBE on their future projects to the benefit of all.”

ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE EPISCOPAL CHURCH Congratulations to CANBE Volunteer Scholarship Recipient Max Demarest! CANBE is proud to congratulate Max Demarest, recipient of the CANBE Volunteer Scholarship! Max’s scholarship video was truly exceptional—wildly creative, beautifully produced, and full of heart. His application captured what makes Nassau Bay such a special place to live while showing the community through his own thoughtful and creative perspective.
The next food distribution will be Saturday, October 3. St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church (18300 Upper Bay Dr. in Nassau Bay), provides food and baby items for about 120 families (over 400 people) on in August. St. Thomas’ monthly food distribution is in partnership with the Galveston Food Bank and is available to any individual or family with no restrictions on where you live. We will serve from 8:30-10:30 AM and we will have fresh fruit, vegetables, milk and sometimes chicken or beef. We also have baby items, such as diapers and wipes. With the cost of food and diapers in today’s economy, this service is even more important to people in the area. Community members are always encouraged and welcome to serve with St. Thomas volunteers and scouts in this ministry. For more information, please contact Fr. Mike Stone at rector@sttaec.org. We can do more together!
Max has also demonstrated his commitment to Nassau Bay through his involvement with the Nauticats, where he has been a leader and an active member of the community. His willingness to contribute, lead, and help make Nassau Bay a better place exemplifies exactly what the CANBE Volunteer Scholarship seeks to recognize. Congratulations, Max! We are proud to call you a member of the Nassau Bay community and wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

Mark “Merriweather” Vorderbruggen tells how science embraces the world of the wild edible and medicinal plants in his morning talk at the October 13 meeting of the Nassau Bay Garden Club. He holds a M.S in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry, but today he is mostly known as the expert on foraging of natural plants in Texas. He will give a fresh look at the natural world as he leads the audience to explore edible plants, herbs and other useful species growing in southeast Texas.
Author of the “Idiot’s Guide to Foraging,” he has also written numerous foraging articles, taught hundreds of foraging walkabouts, appeared on radio, TV, and podcasts. In 2020, he became the medicine man for Medicine Man Plant Co. where he uses ancient plants to help with modern health issues. A related field trip, “Willow Watering Hole Foraging Walkabout” is scheduled October 30. Anyone interested in attending the field trip, contact Janine White at 206972-0240 or at aSuiteBreak@gmail.com. The club will participate in the city’s Fall Sweep October 17.
