a monthly publication from the City of Nassau Bay A LETTER FROM THE MAYOR Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Citizens, Many of you have noticed the City took action to cut down and remove 20 of our majestic Medjool Palm trees from the medians on NASA Road 1. It pains me to communicate that we removed these trees because of what appears to have been an attack of Leafhopper insects that do not themselves hurt our palms, but carry bacteria that is lethal to palms without a proper treatment plan. In total we have planted just shy of 80 palm trees to beautify our portion of NASA Road 1. We anticipate at least another 12 palm trees may need to come down in addition to the 20 that have already been removed bringing the total affected number of trees to 32, or over 40% of the planted trees. I am also pleased to announce that your City Council, EDC, and City Staff had the foresight to participate in a “no questions asked” guaranteed replacement plan on our palm trees planted to date. This means the nursery that we acquired the palm trees from are 100% responsible for their replacement and there will not be any additional cost to citizens to replace any of the lost palm trees. We have put a hold on the replacement of the palm trees to give us time to formulate a complete plan of action, much like we have done with the control program for the aquatic plant overgrowth on Lake Nassau. More than likely, a complete plan of action will include 1) regular insecticide treatment program to eliminate the Leafhopper insects on the trees and particularly in the median grasses like we do for mosquitoes in our streets; 2) a preemptive annual or semi-annual antibiotic treatment to inoculate the palms from the bacteria; and 3) an improved soil area surrounding the trees’ root balls to allow quick acclamation from stress once planted. Believe it or not, heavily-stressed palms emit pheromones that attract the Leafhopper insects particularly during their immediate planting or during significant droughts. Once a proper protective plan is in place, the replanting of the trees will commence. Most citizens have expressed their desire to continue with these majestic trees as they have been and are a signature and upscale look for the City that differentiates us from the other areas in the surrounding Bay Area. If you have any questions or have input to help us with our plan, please reach out to me or our City Manager Paul Lopez. We appreciate any and all feedback and insights. Sincerely,

Phil Johnson

Mayor, City of Nassau Bay

NASSAU BAY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL 2026 OPEN HOUSE The Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department welcomed more than 400 community members to its annual Open House to celebrate a successful conclusion to Fire Prevention Week. Blessed with great weather, the evening was filled with laughter, delicious food, excited raffle prize winners, and meaningful interactions between firefighters and the community. Families enjoyed exploring the fire apparatus, participating in hands-on activities, and learning valuable fire safety tips. NBVFD reminds residents to close bedroom doors before going to sleep to help slow the spread of fire and smoke, and to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly. SENIORS, AVOID BEING SCAMMED

THIS YEAR'S HALLOWEEN IN THE PARK WAS A FANTASTIC SUCCESS!

We had an incredible turnout, with children of all ages showing off their creative and spooktacular Halloween costumes. A special thank you to our city staff, Special Events Committee members, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners whose hard work and dedication helped make this event such a memorable experience for everyone. We appreciate all who attended and helped create a fun and safe evening for our community.

TIME TO "FALL" INTO OUR PARKS Fall is here and your parks are ready for you! David Braun Park Tennis Courts now have canopies over the benches! The Nassau Bay Tennis Association weighed in on the specs, so taking a break from play will be cool!

The children want to go play at the park just when you thought you could sneak in your exercise. Guess what? Now you can do that. Adult exercise equipment is conveniently located by the playground so you and the children can see each other at all times! Fall Sweep brought out volunteers who graciously worked weeding and planting plants and flowers all over the city. Median updates are coming soon. Time to go enjoy your parks!

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB Nassau Bay Garden Club members mark November with two activities: An Arbor Day celebration Friday, November 6 and the monthly meeting Tuesday, November 10. The Texas Arbor Day celebration begins at 11 a.m. at the Circle Garden on Upper Bay Drive. The club will plant an oak tree, the national tree, in honor of the country’s celebration of its 250th anniversary. Jessica Swan, club member, will sing the national anthem. The city will present a proclamation in honor of the Nassau Bay Garden Club and its efforts celebrating Arbor Day in which the club has honored since its founding in 1964. The historically significance includes that the oak wood was famously used to build the hull of the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides"), and various historic oaks have served as important national landmarks, such as the Charter Oak in Connecticut. Congress passed legislation designating the oak as the national tree in November 2004, following a public vote hosted by the Arbor Day Foundation. At the November 11 club meeting, Molly Koehn of the Houston Center of Contemporary Craft, will discuss how artists draw inspiration from nature through gardens, natural materials and contemporary craft. Koehn is an environmental artist from southwest Kansas. Melding a practice of drawing, weaving, and sculptural installation, her work examines idealizations of nature. She responds to city landscaping and structure through material and construction, exploring why we choose to seemingly improve the aesthetic appearance of our surroundings by eradicating the “natural” in favor of the artificial.

CANBE is excited to celebrate the creativity and community spirit of Nassau Bay’s young artists! Our recent art contest invited residence to illustrate their favorite Nassau Bay scene or landmark, and we were thrilled by the wonderful submissions we received. From familiar neighborhood landmarks to places that make Nassau Bay unique, these young artists showed us how much beauty and character can be found right here in our own backyard. Thank you to every child who participated and shared their artistic talents with our community. Congratulations to Ellie, Luke, and Layla! We are proud to announce this year’s contest winners: • Grades 9–12: Ellie McConathy (A neighbor's Yard) • Grades 3–5: Luke Ellard (Johnson Space Center) • Pre-K–Grade 2: Layla Ellard (David Braun Park)

Are you looking for a safe, warm, and loving environment where your child can learn and grow? At St Paul Early Childhood Program, we are so much more than just a daycare. We are a little preschool right here in the neighborhood with one of the best student-to-teacher ratios around. Each class is structured and includes STEM, Library, and Wiggle World along with monthly events for children and families. Spanish is introduced beginning in the 2 yr. old classes up through Pre-K 4. We also offer extracurricular classes such as “Soccer Shots,” “Books Alive,” etc. We enroll children from 12 months (must be walking) to Pre-K 4. There are still a few spots open in our Pre-K 4 classes. Waitlists are available for our other age groups. Tours are available by appointment. Program information and registration forms are on the website at www.stpaulcatholic.org under the Childcare/PreK & registration tabs or call or email Sheri @ 281-333-0176 or szombory@stpaulcatholic.org with questions.

December 4, the planned field trip takes the group to the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Craft Garden and Holiday Market. Anyone interested in attending the field trip, contact Janine White at 206-972-0240 or at aSuiteBreak@gmail.com. Club members participated in the city’s Fall Sweep in mid-October helping with the gardening and planting of the fall flowers in their gardens. President Alice Frawley extended her heartfelt thanks to all the Nassau Bay Garden Club members who volunteered at Fall Sweep. “Your dedication, hard work and willingness to give your time on a Saturday morning are truly appreciated,” Frawley said. “Whether you were cleaning, planting or lending a helping hand wherever needed, your efforts made a meaningful difference in keeping our beautiful community a place we are all proud to call home.” The meeting begins with social time at 9:30 a.m., followed with the program and business meeting at 10 a.m. After the meeting, we will be having lunch at Ray’s Italian Kitchen. Members and guests are invited to attend the meeting held at the council chambers at City Hall,1800 Space Park Drive, Suite 200, Nassau Bay, TX 77058.
