Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Citizens,

This is a friendly reminder that Hurricane Season is upon us and has started already with our first named storm of the season “Arthur”. The city has seen more than its share of rain this season already Please prepare yourself and your family with an emergency plan in case more severe tropical events hit These plans should include having all of your important paperwork, medicines, water, food, supplies and most importantly a predetermined evacuation location such as a hotel, or family and friends to stay with and ride out the storm. The amount of time to react can be very short with hotel rooms filling almost instantaneously, supplies disappearing, and access time for safety deposit boxes and such taking 34 hours Please be safe and prepare a plan

Also, I would like to update everyone on significant progress City Staff and Council have made to reduce flooding throughout our City, our streets and our homes. The City has received slightly less than $180,000 in FEMA grants to complete the engineering work for 3 major projects in order to make a step change improvement in our ability to protect our citizens and evacuation during major storms The 3 projects are: 1) To dredge Lake Nassau to a uniform depth of 8 feet and upgrade power and pumping station to 480V 3-phase power. Many of you may not know that approximately 90% of the rain that falls in Nassau Bay ends up draining to Lake Nassau. One inch of rainfall across our city creates 3-4 inches of water rise to our lake Our current ability to draw down the water level in the Lake is at most 12 inches because the Lake is just too shallow to allow us to safely draw it down without a risk of a fish kill That means we can only properly fight a 3-4 inch rain fall before water begins to back up into our neighborhood. It’s one of the reasons why we see flooding occurring in major downpours of 3+ inches of rain over a short period of time. If we can pull the lake down 3 feet of water height and upgrade our pumps due to enhanced power, we would have the capability to fight up to at least 12-inch rain events The side benefit for this project would be to return Lake Nassau to a recreational pond for the residents and also finally eliminate the algae/hydrilla growth we are experiencing; 2) Our second project is to extend 480V 3-phase power to all 3 major pumping stations on Upper Bay Rd and upgrade the pump stations to larger pumps to exploit the enhanced power to move easily 5X the amount of water In addition, you probably have noticed the temporary poles installed by the road heading into David Braun Park This is a line (paid for entirely by Centerpoint) to bring 480V 3-phase power to the entrance to the park This will allow us to tie in these first 2 projects with our main emergency generator at our water plant so that we never lose power to our flood pumps if we have a catastrophic power outage We will be able to keep our streets clear; and 3) The last FEMA project is to add a new storm sewer line to significantly increase the amount of water drainage for Davon Lane All of these engineering projects are being totally funded by FEMA grants and will be written in the proper way to receive additional FEMA funding to complete the projects.

In June, Elias Jahen was appointment as the City of Nassau Bay’s new Public Works Director. Elias has demonstrated a strong commitment to the City, its employees, and our residents throughout his time with Nassau Bay.

As Public Works Director, Elias will continue leading the department’s efforts to maintain and improve the infrastructure and services that keep our community running smoothly.

Please join us in wishing Elias continued success as he begins this new chapter We are confident that under his leadership, the Public Works Department will continue to achieve great things for the City of Nassau Bay Congratulations, Elias!

These efforts do not include the work City Staff has done and is doing refurbishing current pump stations to keep them at capacity, keeping our flood berms/dikes at 6-foot flood barrier levels, and continual upgrading of street inlets to maximize the street water drainage.

ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Food Distribution for July, 2026 - The next St. Thomas food distribution would normally occur on the first Saturday in July but that Saturday is the Fourth of July. Therefore, our food distribution will be on Wednesday, July 1 St Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church (18300 Upper Bay Dr. in Nassau Bay), provided food and baby items for about 120 families (over 400 people) on Saturday, June 7 St Thomas’ monthly food distribution is in partnership with the Galveston Food Bank and is available to any individual or family with no restrictions on where you live We will serve from 8:30-10:30 am and we will have fresh fruit, vegetables, milk and other items, such as diapers and baby goods, which are greatly appreciated Sometimes we even have meat to distribute With the cost of food and diapers in today’s economy, this service is even more important to people in the area. Community members are always encouraged and welcome to serve with St Thomas volunteers and scouts in this ministry. For more information, please contact Fr. KEEP NASSAU BAY BEAUTIFUL

June proved to be a busy month for the Parks and Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful Committees as they strive to make the parks a fun and easy environment. The Apollo Dog Park has long been a focus of both committees Replacing the old, worn out benches with multiple new benches and concrete pads will provide more enjoyment for dog watchers. David Braun Park's ADA picnic table concrete pads have been reconfigured to provide maximum ease for all A new sidewalk connecting the tennis courts with the pickleball courts will make it easy to move between them. Beautiful Founder's Park has also had some benches relocated The pier has a regular cleaning so it is fun and safe to walk out on. Much to the dismay of the ever present rogue palm seedlings, the entrance medians are now being cared for by a professional lawn service Thank you to Mayor Johnson and Council for listening to the citizens' requests!

CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS

The City of Nassau Bay recognized Mayor Phil Johnson, Mayor Pro-Tem Lucie Johannes Sommer (Position 2), Councilmember Haley Uhl (Position 4), and Councilmember Ashleigh Klug (Position 6) during a swearing-in and recognition ceremony held at the June 2026 City Council Meeting

The City congratulates these elected officials on their re-election and extends its appreciation for their continued dedication and service to the Nassau Bay community. Their leadership and commitment play a vital role in advancing the City's priorities and enhancing the quality of life for residents

The City looks forward to working with Mayor Johnson, Mayor Pro-Tem Sommer, Councilmember Uhl, and Councilmember Klug as they continue to serve the community and help guide Nassau Bay's future.

The CANBE Board of Trustees is proud to announce the $2,000 CANBE Community Service Scholarship to be awarded annually to students who reside and volunteer in Nassau Bay The scholarship supports students who are enrolled in post-secondary institutions and encourages continued community service and educational advancement Applications will be accepted from June 1 through July 31, and winners announced in August

Students pursuing associate, trade, undergraduate, graduate, professional or doctoral degrees are eligible.

Applicants must be a resident of Nassau Bay or have attended at least one year of high school while living and volunteering in Nassau Bay They must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary institution, and must demonstrate active involvement in community service that impacts Nassau Bay

You can apply for the scholarship as late as July 31, and details about all the requirements and the Application Form can be found on the Scholarship page on the CANBE website at NassauBayCANBE.org.

Entries are now being accepted for The First Annual CANBE Art Contest Gift cards will be awarded to the winners in four age categories The deadline for entering is July 31 Details at NassauBayCANBE org

NBWTA (NASSAU BAY WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATION) PLAYS EVERY THURSDAY AT 8:30 AM AT THE NASSAU BAY COURTS.

We’re a group of stay at home moms, part timers, and retirees, and we proudly celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2025 We’re currently recruiting new players to expand our league to four courts

If you’re around a level 2 player and interested in joining us for the Fall 2026 season (tentatively starting on Sep 3 ending on Nov 19), please let me know. The league fee is $25 per season (Fall or Spring). As a friendly reminder, if you need to pump out your pool, please ensure that the water is discharged into your personal sanitary sewer cleanout and not into the street or storm drains.

The City of Nassau Bay is seeking volunteers to fill vacancies on the Board of Adjustment, Street Task Force, and Special Events Committee. Serving on a board, commission, or committee is a rewarding way to get involved, share your knowledge and experience, and help shape the future of our community

Board of Adjustment: Hears appeals related to zoning regulations, building permits, administrative decisions, variances, and special exceptions.

Street Task Force: Reviews street conditions and provides recommendations regarding traffic safety, pedestrian mobility, and transportation-related improvements

Special Events Committee: Assists with planning ideas, recommendations, and volunteer support for City-sponsored events and community activities.
