NOTE FROM THE MAYOR Dear Friend, Neighbors, and Citizens, I want to take a few moments to wish each of you a very Happy and prosperous New Year. I am extremely excited to announce Schafer’s Coastal Kitchen will be opening in Nassau Bay in the location of the old Luby’s property on NASA Road 1. The City, the Schafer family, and our Redevelopment Authority are partnering together to allow for an approximately $6 million investment to completely renovate the building. The City is providing $500K as part of the investment to bring a first-class family restaurant to our community. These funds will be funded completely by the Redevelopment Authority, not citizens' taxes.

Construction is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. Schafer’s Coastal Kitchen serves a distinctive niche with the dining landscape, offering a welcoming environment for people and families to enjoy exceptional food and beverages. The wine list will rival top restaurants nationwide and is targeted to service our local communities. Features will be a custom wine cooler with a capacity of 720 bottles, there will be small and large private rooms, and liquor display cages suspended above the bar. Your Council and City Administration heard the community’s strong desire and priority to affect the redevelopment of the closed Luby’s property. We have achieved that challenge with this partnership. HOLIDAY IN THE PARK RECAP Nassau Bay kicked off the season with holiday cheer at Holiday in the Park on December 13 at David Braun Park. Families enjoyed a magical visit with Santa, writing letters and snapping photos while sipping hot cocoa and enjoying cotton candy. The afternoon was filled with festive activities, including face painting, balloon artists, a petting zoo, snow slides, a trackless train, and music by DJ Christy. Community favorites like Nassau Bay Rocks and the Nassau Bay Garden Club added a special hometown touch, while guests showed off their creativity in the decorative sweater contest and took part in the beloved guessing game. Thank you to the Special Event Committee, volunteers, and everyone who joined us to make this joyful holiday celebration one to remember!

18131 Nassau Bay Drive www.NBBChurch.com Kids Rocked the 2025 Reindeer Fun Run! We had more kids than ever this year; of 450 total entrants, over 100 were 10 and under! Jessica Swan sang the National Anthem, then Mayor Pro-Tem Lucie Sommer welcomed out-of-towners to Nassau Bay, introduced City Council members, and led a moment of silence for Paula Tomasi. Ed White Elementary won the first School Team competition, and Sarah Horton and Spencer Carabajal presented a $500 check to their Principal Samantha Suhler. Robinson Elementary finished second, followed by PH Greene, Landolt, and Mossman Elementaries, then Seabrook Intermediate. The Open Category Team award, the beautiful Reindeer Trophy, was presented to team captain Becca Beck of perennial winners Dave’s Deer. Official Starter Stephanie Clawson got 5k folks on their way right on time, and later the 2k entrants.

This 13week support group is a safe place to help you know what to expect and how to cope with the range of emotions that come with grief. NASSAU BAY PADDLE EVENT Saturday, November 1st, was the 3rd annual Paddle Nassau Bay benefiting Camp Hope PTSD Foundation. Our local waters were filled with civilians and over 46 veterans from all over the US, even as far away as Guam. After enjoying the sunrise and breakfast at the Bal Harbor Marina, they paddled to Nassau Bay Yacht Club for lunch, music, and festivities. Attending the event were City officials that included Mayor Phil Johnson, Councilmember Ashleigh Klug, and City Manager Paul Lopez. Many thanks to We Care Events Paddling Nassau Bay group, which was started in 2022 by Jim Stoa and David Baldt. Special thanks to Parks and Recreation volunteers, the Nassau Bay Garden Club canoe team, and the wonderful resident participants. Awards were given away to veterans, and Camp Hope presented a flag with everyone’s signature who participated. It was an honor to give back to these brave and deserving men who suffer from unseen wounds of war. Additional photos can be found on wecareevents.com/Facebook.
The bounce house and inflatable axe game were big hits this year. Registration was capped this year to keep the event managable, and participant ages ranged from 2 to 84. Thank you, Nassau Bay, and our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers who made it all possible, including the RFR Committee.
NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB
Please join the Nassau Bay Garden Club for our first meeting of the new year on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Our speaker, Rich Sommers, is a Master Naturalist and Exploration Green board member. He will be giving the club an update on Exploration Green, including the planting choices, birding, pollinators, flood mitigation, and more. The meeting will be held at Nassau Bay’s City Hall in the City Council Room and is open to the public. The meeting will begin with refreshments at 9:30 a.m. and some time to socialize, followed by the program and guest speaker at 10:00 a.m. The NBGC’s purpose is to encourage interest in all phases of home gardening and to promote better horticulture practices, civic beauty, and conservation of natural resources. PARKS & RECREATION
The Parks & Recreation committee once again brought holiday joy to Nassau Bay with a heartwarming evening full of community spirit! Beautiful wreaths will soon be hung on the antique white streetlights. Children and adults alike munched on gingerbread people, holiday cookies from Jenny’s Bakery and Scrumptious, and sipped on hot cocoa from Java Owl as they merrily decorated the evergreen wreaths. The holiday crowd then gathered to join Mayor Johnson in counting down for the Howard Ward Park tree lighting, which signals the official start of the Nassau Bay holidays. The evening continued with the carolers continuing the beloved Nassau Bay tradition of going door-to-door door spreading festive cheer singing hymns and favorite holiday jingles.

NASSAU BAY WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATION NBWTA is playing on Thursdays 8:30 AM at Nassau Bay courts. We are stay-at-home moms, work-partimers, and retirees; and just celebrated our 50th anniversary last year. We are recruiting new players to join our league, up to 4 courts. If you are a level 2-ish player, and interested in playing with our League, please let me know. Our league fee is $25 for each season, fall or spring. We are a nonprofit league, using our funds for expenses, social events, and donating to the Nassau Bay Animal Shelter every year. If you are interested, call or text Geri, Flight Captain at (832) 736-2962. If you can’t commit as a regular player, you can join us as a sub. No fees for subs.
NASSAU BAY HOMES ASSOCIATION There are dry slips available for rent at the Nassau Bay Marina. If you are interested in leasing a dry slip, please call or text 281-3332570. The 2026 annual dues were due on January 1st. All outstanding balances have received a 6% late fee on the amount assessed. Please remit payment as soon as possible to avoid additional fees and possibly being sent to collections. If you have any questions about your account or need assistance making your payment, please contact the NBHA office at 281-333-2570 or by email at NassauBayHomesAssociation@gmail.com.
