As the crisp energy of fall settles in, October invites us to pause, recenter, and tune into the various holistic pathways that lead to healing. In this month’s issue of Natural Awakenings, we will explore, “How Healing Works,” probing beyond those “cure alls” and “quick fixes” to the intentional practices that nourish true physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. In this new season of change, let’s embrace deeper healing from the inside out! As usual, we’ll dive right in with this month’s feature article, “Life After Cancer: The Healing Journey.” According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 18.6 million Americans beat their cancer diagnoses in 2025, many of whom reported coming away from this experience with a renewed outlook on life and a more profound sense of meaning. This article peels back the layers of wisdom that cancer survivors can offer all of us about gratitude, resilience, connection, presence, and intentionality. These lessons remind us that healing is often nurtured in simple, sustaining wellness rituals, which can ultimately help us flourish and thrive. Juicy, crisp, and full of natural sweetness, apples are a seasonal favorite, and they also take center stage in our “Conscious Eating” article. This humble fruit is more than a tasty fall snack—it’s also a nutritional superfood, brimming with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. In this article, we’ll look at the frequently overlooked health benefits of apples and make the case for including them in your meal rotation. There’s no shortage of versatile ways to cook with them, too—from chutneys and slaws to jams and curries. Manicured backyards are attractive, but as this month’s “Green Living” article points out, allowing certain areas of a backyard to grow wild is an easy and effective action homeowners can take toward nature conservation. Whether you landscape with native plants that attract local pollinators or integrate features such as birdhouses, bat boxes, bee hotels, and brush piles, you can transform an outdoor space into a haven for wildlife. Here in Florida, where we have so much biodiversity, it’s crucial to do what we can to protect our environment. Autumn is such a special time of rejuvenation and restoration, so as October unfolds, I hope you will encounter meaningful and beautiful opportunities to invest in your own continuous healing journey. I’ll see you back here next month as we usher in another holiday season!

A New Chapter in Clean, Conscious Beauty - Skincare Expert Laurie Lombardi Launches Artisanal Organic Beauty
What Are You Ready to Let Fall Away? There is something beautiful about the way nature moves through the seasons. In autumn, the trees do not question whether it’s time to release their leaves. They do not hold on because those leaves were once important. They let go of what has reached completion, creating space for rest, renewal, and future growth. What if we humans allow ourselves to do the same?
For Laurie Lombardi, beauty extends beyond the surface. Her work has evolved across makeup artistry, clinical nutrition, skincare formulation, entrepreneurship, and wellness with thoughtful care, creativity, and confidence. This has taken many forms, including Laurie Lombardi Cosmetics, The Berries, The Natural Pharmacy, The Natural Apothecary Shoppe, Henri Bendel, Seacoast Day Spa, and Cosmetics Plus. Lombardi’s work continues to connect artistry, natural skincare and cosmetics, nutrition, and wellness.
We all carry beliefs, emotions, habits, and patterns that might have once protected us or helped us navigate difficult experiences. But these same mechanisms that once served us might not be what we need anymore for who we are becoming.
In August 2026, Lombardi sold The Natural Apothecary Shoppe, which marked a turning point and a fresh online direction. Her products will now be sold exclusively through her online business, Artisanal Organic Beauty.
Do any of these narratives sound familiar to you? “I have to do it all myself.” “I will never be enough.” “I need to keep everyone else placated.” “It’s not safe to trust others.” “I must remain strong and resilient.” Sometimes we hold onto beliefs for so long that we do not even realize how much they influence our thoughts, actions, choices, relationships, and how we feel within ourselves. This season is an invitation to be curious about those beliefs.
The move centralizes Lombardi’s experience in makeup artistry, skincare formulation, and wellness in one destination. It features a clean, conscious beauty philosophy, while offering customers a seamless way to invest in her products for their own wellness.
Is it possible they do not belong in this next chapter of your life? Through the practice of kinesiology and energy-based healing techniques, Karen D’Antonio of Wholistically Healed helps clients uncover their underlying stress, emotional patterns, and limiting beliefs in order to reconnect with the wisdom of their own bodies. Healing does not always mean becoming someone new. Sometimes it’s a process to gently release some of the layers that hinder you from returning to the person you have been all along. Just as the trees remind us each fall, there is beauty in release. Karen D’Antonio is a holistic healing guide, kinesiology specialist, and owner of Wholistically Healed. For more information, visit WholisticallyHealed.com.
Lombardi explains that beauty begins from within, and her work continues to evolve around that belief. Artisanal Organic Beauty provides a meaningful outlet to combine makeup artistry, nutrition, skincare, formulation, entrepreneurship, and wellness in a new business chapter. Artisanal Organic Beauty is Lombardi’s online brand for natural and organic skincare and cosmetics, shaped by her experience in makeup artistry, formulation, clinical nutrition, entrepreneurship, and wellness. With uncompromised ethics, all products are 100% vegan, strictly cruelty-free and consciously curated. Made with no hormones, GMO’s, fragrance, parabens, synthetic fillers or talc. Lombardi believes in high performance beauty that respects animals and honors nature. For more information and to order her products, visit ArtisanalOrganicBeauty.com.

Dr. Anna Baker, DOM, invites you to join her interactive anti-aging seminars via Zoom on October 14 and 23, both at 1:30 p.m. She will showcase her Faces by Dr. Anna acupuncture facelift and her muscle retightening Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna. Contact the Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna store to access the meeting ID number. If you cannot attend the seminar live, Dr. Anna will send you a link to watch at your own convenience. Health Briefs GLP-1 PATIENTS NEED DIETARY GUIDANCE
J.P. Morgan Global Research estimates that 10 million Americans were being treated with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) weight-loss drugs in 2025 and forecasts that the number of patients will increase to 25 million by 2030. These drugs suppress appetite and increase feelings of fullness, resulting in a reduced calorie intake of 16 to 39 percent. However, research suggests that up to 40 percent of weight loss may come from lean body mass, including muscle. A systematic review of 12 studies in Obesity Reviews points out the lack of dietary advice and support for GLP-1 patients. As they eat less, these patients may not get enough protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, potentially leading to muscle loss, fatigue, impaired immune response, hair loss and osteoporosis. Muscle loss increases the risk of injuries and falls.
Alex Malt/shutterstock
The review’s authors advise GLP-1 patients to consult a dietitian at the start of treatment and focus on nutrient-dense, high-quality foods to maintain lean muscle mass while avoiding saturated and other fats. They also suggest that small, frequent meals may alleviate side effects like nausea. The authors emphasize the need for further research to determine the necessary information and support for patients, as well as how the drugs affect eating habits, appetite, well-being and quality of life, to establish dietary care best practices alongside weight-loss drugs.
BE THE CHANGE BY SPREADING JOY To a certain degree, all humans experience conditioning to function within the cultural norms we were born into. This occurs through adaptation and education in line with the prevailing wisdom of our times. However, as we grow and mature, it’s also important to continue educating ourselves, questioning the beliefs we once took for granted, viewing life through a more expansive lens, and embracing this journey with an open heart and an open mind. The more we learn about this world—along with our role in it as humanity—the clearer it becomes that some of our norms must change 14

LIVER-DAMAGING BOTANICALS
A 2024 survey study in JAMA Network Open of more than 9,500 adults revealed that 4.7 percent, or about 15.6 million Americans, reported using botanicals that could damage their liver. The data came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The botanicals in question included turmeric or curcumin, green tea extract, ashwagandha, Garcinia cambogia, red yeast rice and black cohosh products. The survey indicated that botanical product users were typically older, educated adults and more likely to have arthritis than non-users. Older adults might consume more of these potentially liver-damaging botanicals due to marketing campaigns addressing various health conditions. Turmeric is promoted for joint pain relief, black cohosh for menopause symptoms and red yeast rice for cholesterol management. For information on medications and supplements and their effects on the liver, refer to the LiverTox database (ncbi. nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK547852/), which is managed by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Always consult a healthcare professional before taking any supplement to discuss its potential side effects.
for the betterment of everyone. But this can also leave us wondering what we can do to be part of that change. Sometimes the most effective choice we can make to create a meaningful impact in this world is to unlock what ignites our passion, excitement, and joy. This enables us to participate fully and authentically in our own lives, while passing that same joy on to others. Maybe this is what we’ve all come to “Earth School” to accomplish. NEW HOPE FOR HEREDITARY BALDNESS
A 2024 study in Frontiers in Pharmacology reveals that a basic sugar could be the next treatment for hereditary-pattern baldness, which affects up to 40 percent of men and women. Deoxyribose, a natural component of DNA, was found to accelerate fur regrowth in mice while researchers were studying its effects on wound healing. Intrigued by this finding, the researchers tested deoxyribose on male mice experiencing testosterone-driven hair loss. For 20 days, groups of mice were treated with a biodegradable, non-toxic deoxyribose hydrogel; minoxidil; or a combination of both. Minoxidil, sold as Rogaine, is an approved topical hair loss treatment. After the treatment period, researchers measured hair regrowth, length and diameter, comparing results to untreated mice. The treatment groups achieved 80 to 90 percent hair regrowth, suggesting that deoxyribose might be as effective as minoxidil in enhancing the blood flow to hair follicles. Mice treated with the combination showed similar results to those receiving only one form of treatment. Additional research is needed to understand how deoxyribose works before testing it on humans.

EGGS MAY LOWER ALZHEIMER’S RISK A recent study in The Journal of Nutrition found that eating eggs may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers analyzed data from a long-term study of nearly 40,000 Seventh Day Adventists, tracking their aging, diet and health over an average of 15 years. At the start, none of the participants had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or serious memory issues. Detailed dietary questionnaires assessed egg consumption, categorizing participants by frequency. Those consuming eggs one to three times monthly reduced their Alzheimer’s risk by 17 percent. Risk decreased by 20 percent for those that ate eggs two to four times weekly, and by 27 percent for those consuming at least five eggs per week. After accounting for diet, lifestyle factors and medical conditions, the researchers concluded that egg consumption independently lowers Alzheimer’s risk. While the study received partial funding from the American Egg Board, the researchers reported no conflicts of interest. October 2026

Homeopathy vs. Herbal Medicine Two Natural Approaches With Very Different Principles by Athena Eamon
A
Herbal medicine, also known as botanical medicine or phytotherapy, harnesses the power of plant parts like leaves, flowers, roots, bark and seeds to prevent and treat illness. The chemical compounds found in the herbs interact with human physiology and can be studied pharmacologically and clinically to understand their effects on biological processes. While some homeopathic remedies are derived from plants used in herbal medicine, others come from minerals, chemicals and even animal sources. Homeopathy operates on the principle that “like cures like”. It uses highly diluted natural substances to encourage the body’s own healing mechanisms. Before embarking on herbal or homeopathic treatments, it is important to consult all members of a patient’s whole health care

Look Renewed, Feel Restored
refreshed, while feeling confident. By combining all these services together, we create a more personalized approach to care that considers how each patient wants to look, feel, and function. Our goal is to provide compassionate, personalized care focused on overall health and quality of life.
therapies, and regenerative medicine seamlessly complement each other to bolster a person’s overall health and quality of life?
NA: How does the use of modern technology broaden the scope of what you’re able to offer patients? Can you summarize what each of these services entails, as well as how they contribute to both aesthetic and functional wellness?
At the Center for Regenerative & Aesthetic Wellness our approach brings primary care, regenerative medicine, aesthetic treatments, and hormone health together under one roof. This allows us to look at the whole person, rather than focusing on a single concern or symptom.
The use of advanced technologies such as EMSCULPT NEO, EMSELLA, and EXOMIND allows us to offer patients options that extend beyond the more traditional aesthetic treatments. These technologies address a broader range of wellness and functional concerns.
Primary care establishes the foundation. Through preventive care, wellness visits and screenings, laboratory monitoring, and health management, we develop an understanding of each patient’s health and shifting needs. When appropriate, hormone replacement therapy can also complement this approach by addressing the hormonal changes that can affect energy, mood, sleep, body composition, and overall quality of life.

hen I reflect on the crisp energy and fresh vibrancy associated with the autumn season, I think about what this transition means for my health. It feels like an open invitation to renewal—not just on the surface, but in all those nooks and crannies that influence my mental, physical, and emotional well-being. And I’m not alone in wanting to explore this invitation—the Center for Regenerative & Aesthetic Wellness is on that same wavelength. In this month’s Community Spotlight, I am fortunate to speak with the team behind this integrative clinic, helmed by Dr. Bonnie Wang. Here, we’ll discuss the intersection of functional, aesthetic, and regenerative healthcare to build out a wellness framework that digs beneath the symptoms to bring renewal and restoration to each person as a whole.
Regenerative therapies can also be incorporated to support the body’s natural healing and renewal processes, with treatments such as platelet-rich plasma injections (PRP) selected, based on each patient’s individual health needs or goals. Aesthetic medicine is another important part of this picture. Through injectables, facials, laser treatments, skin rejuvenation, and body contouring, we help patients look

associated with emotional regulation, cognitive function, and self-control. Together, these technologies allow us to address areas that are often overlooked in traditional aesthetic medicine, including muscle strength, pelvic function, and cognitive wellness. NA: Given the Center for Regenerative & Aesthetic Wellness’ focus on whole-person wellness, how does this lens inform the care you provide— rather than zeroing in on just the symptoms or treatment methods themselves? Our whole-person care approach means we look beyond an individual symptom or concern to understand the person as a whole. This includes their health history, lifestyle, goals, and overall well-being. We take the time to understand what might contribute to how they feel and what they hope to achieve. This allows us to develop personalized care plans that can incorporate primary care, hormone health, regenerative medicine, or aesthetic treatments when appropriate. Ultimately, our goal is to build a continual relationship with each patient and provide comprehensive care that supports not just how they look, but how they feel, function, and experience their daily lives. NA: What would you tell someone who is curious about the intersection of all these modalities and wants to learn how they can benefit from your unique model of care, outside of a more traditional, conventional medicine framework? We would encourage them to start with a conversation. You don’t have to know which treatment you need or where to begin. We listen to what you’re experiencing, understand your goals, and look at the overall picture of your health. From there, we can help determine which options might be appropriate for you. Our goal is to make care feel personal, connected, and focused on the individual—not just the symptom. The Center for Regenerative & Aesthetic Wellness is located at 3530 Fruitville Road, Sarasota. A Whole-Body Approach to Treating Neuropathy by Dr. Laura Korman
N
europathy involves damage, disease, or dysfunction in one or more nerves. The most common form— peripheral neuropathy—affects mostly the feet but can also impair the hands. It often begins with intermittent numbness, tingles in the toes, or a “puffy” sensation at the ball of the foot. Symptoms can then progress to sensations of burning, cramping, stabbing, or shooting, or pain that worsens after standing, walking, sitting, or even sleeping. Although these symptoms are felt in the feet and sometimes hands, neuropathy is not a disease of the extremities themselves. Its root cause might be structural, metabolic, toxic, inflammatory, or related to nutrient deficiency. Let’s explore what neuropathy entails, along with its primary causes and a four-pillar whole-body treatment approach that can help heal nerve damage to halt, slow, or reverse this progressive and often debilitating condition.
www.nasrq.com
Our nervous system functions similarly to a home’s electrical network. The central nervous system—the brain and spinal cord—is the command center, like a circuit breaker. The peripheral nervous system is the network of nerves connecting the brain to muscles, organs, and skin. Its job is to relay information back and forth that allows us to feel, think, and move, like the wires connecting a circuit breaker to every switch. When nerve damage occurs, their protective covering—the myelin sheath—can break down, which disrupts communication between the brain and body. This disruption is similar to when a wire short-circuits. With peripheral neuropathy, signals from the feet or hands become fragmented, which produces the sensory or motor symptoms commonly associated with this disease. According to the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy, an estimated 14 percent of American adults over age 40 have neuropathy. Among adults over 70, nearly 40 percent are affected. Neuropathy is traditionally associated with
diabetes, treated with symptom-based medications, and viewed as a lifelong condition with little hope for lasting relief. This conventional paradigm often overlooks other potential causes and treats the symptoms, rather than their source. Roughly one-third of folks with neuropathy have diabetes, while a similar number could be living with undiagnosed metabolic syndrome, prediabetes, or insulin resistance, but are often labeled as having idiopathic—or unknown-cause—neuropathy. Other cases can result from vertebral misalignment, nerve compression or trauma, autoimmune disease, toxins, infections, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, medications, or rare genetic disorders. Neuropathy often develops slowly, influenced by environmental, dietary, and lifestyle factors. As it progresses, balance can decline, which increases the risk of falls, serious injury, mobility aids, and loss of independence. Some medications prescribed for neuropathy can cause side-effects or nutrient deficiencies that worsen symptoms. Identifying and accounting for each patient’s root causes is essential for successful, sustainable treatment. That means examining structural imbalances, spinal misalignment and nerve compression, metabolic dysfunction, toxins, inflammation, and nutrient deficiencies. This four-pillar wholebody approach is a team effort, involving the patient and often a spouse, partner, sibling, or friend who can support their journey toward better health.
PILLAR 1: IDENTIFY AND TREAT ROOT CAUSES. We request or order bloodwork tests that exceed a typical annual panel, including HbA1c, insulin, CRP, homocysteine, B12, folate, ferritin, and vitamin D. We then evaluate the results against optimal—not merely normal—ranges. We might also evaluate autoimmune markers, food sensitivities, chronic pathogens, toxins, and medications, such as statins, proton pump inhibitors, acid blockers, and
metformin, which can contribute to nutrient deficiencies associated with neuropathy.
PILLAR 2: REDUCE SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION. We use dietary modification and precision nutritional support based on the patient’s history, examination, imaging, and laboratory results.
PILLAR 3: HELP HEAL DAMAGED NERVES. In-office modalities can include laser therapy to support cellular energy and circulation, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy to aid cellular charge and repair, and wholebody vibration to help restore balance and strength. At-home therapies can also be integrated to offer convenient daily treatment and help accelerate recovery.
PILLAR 4: CONSIDER REGENERATIVE MEDICINE IN ADVANCED CASES. This can involve locally administered mesenchymal stem cells to support the repair and regeneration of severe nerve damage. Using this whole-body approach, we have been able to successfully minimize debilitating symptoms by working to heal the underlying dysfunction, rather than just masking symptoms with medication. The takeaway is that folks living with neuropathy and fearing lack of mobility or loss of independence can have hope. When we identify and treat the underlying causes in order to support nerve health and repair, it becomes possible to restore normal feeling, rebuild strength and balance, and return to a healthy, vibrant life. How Healing Works by Dr. Fred Harvey
H
ealing is not what many folks assume it is. It is not the suppression of medical symptoms, the removal of an affected part , or the administration of a chemical that forces the body into a different state. Those are interventions—some useful, others not so much—but they are not healing. The true definition of healing is a restoration of function, arising from within. The human body is not a machine that breaks and requires fixing from the outside. Rather, it is a self-organizing biological intelligence that continuously attempts to return to homeostasis. Each symptom a person encounters—whether fatigue, inflammation, pain, or mood disruption—is the body’s signal that something upstream is interfering with its function. The symp-

tom itself is not the problem. The symptom is a message. Conventional medicine has built an entire industry around silencing that message without actually reading it. Functional medicine starts by reading those symptoms. When we see elevated inflammatory markers, we ask what generates the inflammation. When we see hormonal depletion, we ask what consumes the precursors. When we see a neurotransmitter deficit, we ask whether the gut— which produces 90 percent of serotonin—is intact. The body leaves a trail of biochemical evidence in its urine, blood, or stool. When read correctly, these indications reveal a map, not a diagnosis. This map tells us where the interference is occurring and what removing it will require. However, the map is only half of the entire

story. Healing also operates at a level that no lab panel can fully capture—the level of consciousness. The placebo effect is real and powerful, but it is also poorly named. Calling it a “placebo” tends to imply that it is somehow less than real. This is false. Rather, it’s a demonstration that the mind, through intention and belief, can reorganize the body’s own internal biology. Joe Dispenza has spent 20 years documenting this phenomenon with EEG monitoring and biomarker testing. He has found that folks with sustained meditative coherence show measurable changes in their microbiome, inflammatory markers, and brain wave patterns— changes that no supplement produced. Jane Roberts, channeling the entity Seth 50 years ago, articulated this same finding. The
self a person holds in their consciousness is the template from which their physical body is continuously being reconstructed. In other words, you are not healing toward some external standard. You are manifesting the version of yourself that feels most authentic to you. This is why self-love is not a soft concept. It is a clinical one. The patient who carries chronic shame, self-blame, or a belief they are broken will generate the physiology of a broken person—regardless of which supplements they take or which diet they follow. Conversely, the patient who genuinely inhabits a state of gratitude and expectation of well-being will drive biological processes that no medication can replicate. Therefore, healing is a convergence. It requires removing the biochemical interference— healing the gut, correcting the nutrient deficits, balancing the hormones, or eliminating the toxic load. But it also requires shifting the internal state from which the body is taking its cues. Neither is sufficient alone. Together, they create conditions for the body to do what it has always been capable of: return to wholeness. A physician’s job is to get out of the way. Scars: Secret Source of Pain by Eric Winder, DC
Her discomfort was increasing each week, limiting her ability to continue playing. Upon examining Terry’s scar, I noticed a hard, restricted feeling, compared to the skin around it. Some of the muscles between her spine and shoulder blade were abnormally tight and weak. Pressing on them caused Terry to feel a sharp discomfort. When I stimulated the scar with precise, targeted pressure, those tight muscles relaxed and were much less tender to pressure. This confirmed the scar was a source of both her pain and tension.
S
cars serve as reminders of past injury. Sometimes they also cause problems long after the initial trauma, even when we don’t realize it. Pain from scar tissue is often missed because the scar itself might not hurt. Instead, scars can cause pain by distorting the sheet-like connective tissue in our bodies, known as fascia. This can cause muscle imbalance and joint instability, resulting in pain felt in nearby muscles and joints. Fortunately, releasing internal restrictions in scars can offer pain relief and restore normal movement to affected fascia.
NEW SCAR, NEW PAIN A patient, whom I will refer to as Terry, is a cellist. She asked me to help alleviate new pain and tension in her right shoulder blade. The pain began after she healed from a skin biopsy in the right shoulder blade area, and was constantly intensified by the shoulder movement with her bow while playing cello. Terry was sure this new scar was the source of her pain and tension, but massages on the scar tissue and pain-relieving lotions had not relieved the pain at all. 22
Sarasota/Manatee Edition
After about five minutes of precise manual therapy to soften the scar, Terry’s muscle tension melted. Retesting the weak muscles showed improvements to solid, normal strength. Terry practiced bowing movements as if playing the cello and was excited to feel her shoulder restored to free, easy motion. She now plays her instrument pain-free.
OLD SCAR, NEW PAIN Samantha came into my office for assistance with hip pain after using her thighs to lift a heavy box. She thought the pain could be from a subsequent muscle strain, but weeks later, she still experienced weakness and some difficulty walking. My practice focuses on finding restrictions in connective tissue (especially fascia), which cause muscular imbalance and joint misalignment that result in pain, so I examined her thoroughly for fascia restrictions. Although she presented with mild inflammation in the hip area, there were no significant restrictions. However, Samantha exhibited a loss of muscle tone and weakness in her left abdominal muscles. Searching for the source of this weakness, I found a line of fascia tension in her left rib cage, which she informed me was actually the line of a surgical scar.
www.nasrq.com
At age two, she had an enormous incision made in the left side of her chest to allow for heart surgery. This scar remained painful throughout her entire life, and was exquisitely tender to even light pressure. Upon examining the scar, I stimulated it with gentle pressure while retesting her abdominal muscle strength. They were much stronger, and movement at her left hip became less painful. The scar was large and, therefore, could not be completely released in just one treatment. However, that partial release during the first treatment offered enormous relief from her left hip pain. Further treatments resolved her pain entirely. It never occurred to Samantha that a scar from her early childhood might still affect her decades later. Unbeknownst to her, the scar had been creating a weakness in her abdominal muscles that made it difficult for her to recover from a minor injury. She had, in fact, strained some muscles due to heavy lifting, but the restricted fascia from her old scar caused continual stress in the affected area, which inhibited its healing.
REFERRED PAIN Samantha’s story illustrates another potential facet of pain that can be caused by scars. The pain can “refer” to somewhere distant from the scar, so it’s often hard to know where the pain comes from. I see many cases where scars from abdominal surgeries, such as C-sections or appendectomies, cause distortions in the body’s web of fascia, causing hip muscle weakness. This can lead to sciatica or knee pain, interfering with basic mobility. Sometimes scars could even cause pain to cross over to the other side of the body. One example of this is an abdominal scar on one side of the body that causes weakness and twisting of the pelvis. This can lead to misalignment or binding of the joints on the opposite side, resulting in low back pain or sciatica. That’s why I evaluate all patients, from head to toe, and take a thorough history of their past injuries and surgeries. It is entirely possible and even common for restrictions in fascia to have absolutely no
pain of their own, while causing pain and dysfunction somewhere else in the body.
Aging Proudly: A Wellness & Resource Series for Older Adults
EASY DOES IT Restriction in scar tissue is often painful to pressure, but effective fascia release can be gentle. Stiffened scars often respond to just ounces of hands-on pressure, restoring the normal softness and pliability to a tissue that allows for restored muscle tone, balance, and joint stability. Scars that have felt hard or dense for years can often be softened in one treatment and completely restored to near-normal pliability in just two or three visits. Some types of scars that are most likely to activate pain (even when the scar itself is not painful) are those from the following surgeries: hysterectomy, c-section, hernia repair, hip or knee replacement, spinal fusion, or the implantation of hardware. I highly recommend an evaluation for scar tissue restrictions in any case of unexplained chronic pain where there is significant scar tissue not far from the pain area. For many folks, releasing scar tissue offers the sustainable relief they were unable to find anywhere else. Ancient Wisdom, Modern Healing sands of years. Instead of separating the body into isolated systems, Eastern Medicine sees relationships between digestion, sleep, emotions, circulation, energy, environment, and lifestyle. Symptoms are important, but they are also clues. Headaches, digestive problems, fatigue, insomnia, or chronic pain might seem unrelated on the surface. Through a whole-person lens, however, patterns often emerge. The goal becomes not simply asking, “How do we make this symptom disappear?” It’s examining, “Why is the body producing this symptom?” That question can change the direction of care. Acupuncture is one way to communicate with the body’s regulatory systems. Traditional acupuncture theory describes a network of pathways through which Qi, or vital energy, circulates. When disruptions occur in this movement, a deficiency, excess, or stagnation can develop, which often contributes to various symptoms.

ealing is often viewed as something that happens to us. We might take a medication, receive a treatment, or undergo a procedure with the expectation that it will “fix” whatever is wrong. However, the human body tells a more interesting story. Healing is an active, dynamic process that occurs throughout each moment of our lives. A cut closes. A broken bone remodels. The immune system identifies a threats and mounts a response. The digestive tract continually renews its lining. The nervous system adapts to changes in our environment. The body works toward constant, continual balance. According to Eastern Medicine, a practitioner does not heal a patient. Rather, the practitioner helps create the conditions in which a person’s body can heal itself. Health is more than the absence of symptoms. East Asian Medicine has viewed health through the lens of balance for thou-

Modern research helps us understand the nuances of acupuncture. Stimulation of specific acupuncture points can influence the nervous system and local tissues, affecting processes involved in pain signals, circulation, and the body’s regulatory responses. The traditional and modern explanations use different language, but they share an important throughline: the body is interconnected. Therefore, acupuncture treatment is not about placing a needle where something hurts. In fact, a practitioner might select points far from the area of discomfort because treatment is based on the overall pattern being presented. One exciting development in integrative health care is our ability to combine traditional observation with modern functional testing. Eastern Medicine has always relied on patterns. For instance, practitioners observe the tongue, feel the pulse, and ask
www.nasrq.com
questions about digestion, sleep, temperature, appetite, energy, pain, and emotional well-being. Modern laboratory testing can provide another layer of information, too. Depending on the patient, these tests can evaluate nutritional status, blood sugar regulation, inflammation, thyroid function, hormones, or other metabolic markers. Specialized testing can sometimes provide information about digestive function and the gastrointestinal environment as well. Tests should not replace listening to the patient or treating the person. Rather, they can help the practitioner ask better questions. For example, fatigue could involve inadequate sleep, nutritional insufficiency, blood sugar fluctuations, chronic stress, or several other factors simultaneously. Likewise, digestive complaints might be influenced by food choices, motility, stress physiology, or gastrointestinal environment changes. When appropriate, testing is combined with a thorough medical history and traditional diagnostic methods. This allows the picture to become much clearer. Arguably, one of the most valuable lessons from Eastern Medicine philosophy is that health is cultivated daily. This encourages us to live in deeper harmony with our own physiology and environment, rather than continually forcing the body past its inherent ability to adapt. Restoring balance does not require a perfect diet, hours of meditation, or an elaborate wellness routine. It can begin with basic practices. Eat nourishing foods at consistent intervals. Incorporate daily movement. Spend time outdoors. Maintain a habitual sleep regimen. Allow for periods of rest. Cultivate meaningful relationships. Eastern philosophy also reminds us that there is a natural rhythm to life. There are times for activity and times for restoration. Modern culture often celebrates constant productivity, but human biology requires both. The nervous system cannot remain in a constant state of high alert without inevitably suffering the consequences. In East Asian Medicine we treat the terrain, not just the symptom. Imagine that you cre-
ate a garden. When a plant begins to wilt, you could spray the leaves and hope they improve. Or you could examine the soil, sunlight, water, nutrients, and environment in which the plant is trying to flourish. Human health is remarkably similar. Symptoms deserve attention and sometimes require conventional medical treatment. But lasting wellness also invites us to examine the terrain in which those symptoms took root. How are we sleeping? What are we eating? Are we moving? How is our digestion and nutrient absorption? What do laboratory tests reveal? How much stress is the nervous system dealing with? What prevents the body from doing what it naturally knows how to do? The future of healthcare does not necessarily require choosing between ancient medicine and modern science. Some of the most thoughtful wellness approaches emerge when we allow both to inform each other. Acupuncture and Eastern philosophy remind us to see the whole person. Modern laboratory tests give us sophisticated ways to investigate human physiology. Nutrition and lifestyle offer the daily building blocks that promote change. Together, all of these tools form a powerful healing lens. Instead of simply treating disease, we can also cultivate health. Healing, after all, is not merely the disappearance of symptoms. It is the restoration of balance, resilience, and the body’s innate adaptation. Sometimes the most important question we can ask is not, “What can I take for this?” It’s actually, “What does my body need to heal itseld?” Dr. Captain is a highly skilled expert in the field of Acupuncture. Life After Cancer The Healing Journey by Marlaina Donato
A
cancer diagnosis can be frightening, and the treatments that follow—chemotherapy, radiation, surgery—are often grueling. But there is hope. The American Cancer Society estimates that 18.6 million Americans were living with a history of cancer last year. Many survivors emerge with a renewed outlook, embracing experiences that nurture the body, mind and spirit. Even after treatment ends, lingering effects can shape daily life, including fatigue, pain, stiffness, nerve discomfort, emotional ups and downs, fear of recurrence, and changes in body image and physical function. According to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, long-term wellness for cancer survivors often relies on smarter nutrition, restorative sleep, regular exercise, stress management and meaningful social connections.
REBUILDING THE FOUNDATION AND FINDING PURPOSE “Our body is an incredible and miraculous self-healing biological organism, but it needs the correct support and nourishment,” says Sally Wellbeloved, a women’s cancer coach, holistic health advocate and survivor in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape, South Africa. “We need to come into right relationship with our physical body.” Wellbeloved knows firsthand what it means to rebuild after triple-negative breast cancer. Learning to listen to her body became essential. “I have learned to honor my body’s needs, and this was only possible when the noise in my head could settle down,” she explains. “It has been quite the process and taken me a long time to decondition that way of being and living.”

Her approach combines a plant-based, organic diet with targeted supplementation based on bloodwork and genetic testing. She also prioritizes a return to the natural rhythms of life—slowing down after sunset, avoiding devices at least three hours before bed and embracing deep, restorative sleep. To manage stress and heal emotional wounds, she recommends meditation, yoga, dancing, walking in nature, swimming in the ocean and equine-assisted therapy. She also uses emotional freedom technique, which combines cognitive focus with fingertip tapping on specific body meridian points, as well as somatic therapy, which uses awareness of physical sensations to help heal emotional pain.

For Wellbeloved, finding purpose is a lifeline. “This is the most fundamental thing that pulls us forward and inspires us—that thing you have always wanted to do, but thought you couldn’t or weren’t good enough,” she says. Her advice is to move toward that dream day by day. “Just take one, small step,” she emphasizes. “This is what got me through my darkest time and became my mantra.”

As the center’s exercise and stress-management programs manager, she oversees fitness classes, yoga, walking groups and other forms of movement modalities, helping participants safely regain their strength, flexibility, balance and endurance in a supportive environment while also learning transformative lessons they can carry into everyday life.
HEALING THROUGH CREATIVITY For some, recovery comes through creativity. Melissa Greene, a writing coach in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, founded her program Write From the Heart after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, as a way to process grief and fear. “Writing has helped me through life—no, saved my life–and I
Her stream-of-consciousness writing workshops create a welcoming and genial space where students can safely explore their memories, thoughts and feelings on the page. Although they are welcome to read what they’ve written in class, sharing is optional, and laughter is encouraged. “I discovered that writing begins from a deep longing to express, not rules or technique, and that humor and whimsy play a huge role in relaxing the nervous system,” she notes. Some of Greene’s workshops specifically cater to cancer patients and survivors at various medical centers in Pennsylvania. For a 2020 clinical study published in BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care, she taught creative writing to participating cancer patients at the Penn State Cancer Institute. The researchers found that this type of creative intervention had a positive effect on the participants’ mood. “Students may choose to write about the cancer experience, or not,” says Greene. “But, whatever their topic, we are all there

“The end of treatment can be a major transition,” Chipman explains. “Our movement programs are designed to meet people where they are in their cancer journey. Mentally, exercise can reduce stress, improve mood and restore confidence and a sense of control. On a deeper level, movement can bring joy, connection and a renewed sense of possibility.”
We combine cutting-edge regenerative medicine with advanced aesthetic care to help you look and feel your best- inside and out.
Chipman is excited about the growing understanding that quality of life is an important part of cancer care, both during treatment and beyond. She has witnessed how exercise, good nutrition, stress management and integrative therapies can empower people to take an active role in their recovery and well-being.

MAKING PEACE WITH NEW EMOTIONS For breast cancer survivor Karen Villagran, an emergency medical technician in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, healing meant looking inward. Before her diagnosis, she had dedicated her life to helping others, but found it difficult to extend the same empathy and nurturing to herself. “My nervous system was stuck on survival mode for decades,” she reflects. “I feel that my cancer diagnosis wasn’t the beginning of fear; it was the culmination of it.” The pain of multiple surgeries and treatments prompted her to address deep childhood trauma and unresolved emotional pain. “I had to change my vocabulary of how I spoke to myself, how I felt about myself and how I treated myself,” she explains. With the help of therapy, daily meditation and hypnotherapy, Villagran began to rewire her brain and make new neural pathways. “Physical recovery saved my body, but emotional recovery is what’s finally teaching my nervous system that the danger has

PRIORITIZING CANCER SCREENINGS Early detection remains one of the most effective tools in improving outcomes for many cancers. Primary care physicians can determine appropriate screening schedules tailored to the personal and family medical history of their patients. Most private insurance plans and Medicare cover routine, evidence-based screenings with no out-of-pocket cost. The American Cancer Society provides guidelines for early detection of breast, colon, cervical, endometrial, lung and prostate cancer. Straightening Up Exercises to Improve Posture and Well-Being by Tom Whittle
B
ad posture in adults often starts in childhood. A 2020 study published in iScience surveyed nearly 600,000 children and found that 65 percent had incorrect posture, with a higher prevalence in girls and kids over 10 years old. Contributing factors may include carrying heavy backpacks, especially when slung over one shoulder, excessive screen time, lack of ex-
ercise, stress and being underweight. As we age, poor posture can lead to pain, soreness and stiffness throughout the body, according to the Hospital for Special Surgery, in New York City. Simple changes can make a big difference. Regularly check that the ears are aligned above the shoulders and the shoulders are
over the hips. Stand tall with the shoulders pulled back, chest open and stomach slightly pulled in. Take frequent breaks from the phone, computer and TV to move around. Rick Richardson, a doctor of physical therapy at the Physical Therapy Center of Excellence, in Bedminster, New Jersey, suggests that daily exercises to loosen tight muscles and strengthen core and back muscles are essential for maintaining body alignment. Here are his recommended stretching and strengthening exercises. As muscles become stronger, incorporate light weights into the strength poses. Always consult a healthcare provider or physical therapist before starting a new exercise program. Tom Whittle is publishing manager of Natural Awakenings.
STRETCHING EXERCISES
While seated, hold the side of the chair with the right hand and grab the top of the head near the ear with the left hand. Gently pull toward the left shoulder, holding for 30 seconds. Keep the neck muscles relaxed throughout the stretch. Switch hands and repeat. Perform two or three sets on each side.
While seated, hold the side of the chair with the right hand and rotate the head 45 degrees from the right arm. Grab the top of the head with the left hand and pull the nose toward the left armpit. Keep the neck muscles relaxed throughout the stretch. Switch hands and repeat. Perform two or three sets on each side.
While lying on the back, tuck the chin toward the spine to create a double chin, holding for three to five seconds. Avoid nodding or lifting the head during the stretch. Perform 10 to 15 reps, two to three times a day.
With toes on the floor and chest on an exercise ball, hold the body straight with arms out to the side in a T-position and palms down. Raise the arms from the floor to shoulder height and hold for one to two seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 times, once or twice daily.
With toes on the floor and chest on an exercise ball, hold the body straight with arms out to the side and elbows bent down. While maintaining bent elbows, raise them to shoulder height and hold for 1 to 2 seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 reps, once or twice daily.
STRENGTHENING EXERCISES

Conscious Eating
A Bushel of Goodness Enchanting Ways to Enjoy Apples by Marlaina Donato
N
othing beats the first crisp bite of a blushing Macintosh or the cozy aroma of an apple cobbler bubbling in the oven on a cool October day. Autumn is the perfect season to celebrate the nearly 100 apple varieties grown in the United States. From tossing matchstick-thin slices of Pink Lady into a fresh salad and shredding a Golden Delicious for a tangy slaw to blending a Granny Smith into a bright dressing or savoring a warm, lightly sweetened turnover, this timeless fruit is as wholesome as it is delicious.
EVERYDAY SUPERFOOD Apples are more than just a fall favorite—they are a powerhouse of health benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic, apples are packed with inflammation-fighting antioxidants that help protect against lung, colorectal and certain breast cancers. Their fiber aids digestion, supports a healthy weight and studies show that eating apples regularly may lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Apples are rich in quercetin, a flavonoid
Weiss notes that every apple is a healthy choice, but different varieties offer slightly different nutritional profiles because of their unique polyphenol content. Deeply colored apples often contain higher levels of antioxidants like anthocyanins, while tart varieties such as Granny Smith are slightly lower in natural sugars and high in beneficial polyphenols. For the greatest health boost, enjoy apples with the skin on, where much of the fiber and antioxidants live.
SWEET AND SAVORY MAGIC
While apples shine in classic desserts, they are also a versatile star in everyday meals. “I make a cabbage slaw with apples all year long. It’s great on tacos, as a side dish or a big salad for crowds,” says Amy Pennington, a Seattle-based cook, urban farmer and author of Apples: From Harvest to Table. Once a self-professed apple skeptic, she fell in love with seasonal heirloom varieties at her local farmers markets. One of Pennington’s favorite indulgences is a festive breakfast of potato latkes (pancakes) topped with homemade applesauce and sour cream served with a glass of champagne. Her apple chutney with ginger, cayenne and Indian spices like cardamom, cinnamon and clove is a flavorful partner for cheese boards or sandwiches. And for a fun winter treat, she suggests homemade apple chips made by slicing apples thinly, brushing them with honey water and dehydrating them until they are crisp.

that promotes heart health. Eating just two apples a day may even help reduce high cholesterol. “One medium apple contains four to five grams of fiber, much of which is found in the skin,” says Ronald Weiss, a dual board-certified physician, botanist, farmer and founder of Ethos Farm Project, in Long Valley, New Jersey. “The soluble fiber, called pectin, acts as a prebiotic, feeding the beneficial bacteria that live in the gut. Pectin produces short-chain fatty acids that nourish the cells lining the colon, reduce inflammation and support a healthy digestive tract.”

Olwen Woodier, a cooking instructor, farm owner and author of The Apple Cookbook: 125 Freshly Picked Recipes, enjoys tossing halved, cored apples into the roasting pan alongside onions and peppers with chicken, pork tenderloin or other roasts. She also adds diced apples to stews and sautés apples with onions and herbs to complement fish or vegetarian curries. Woodier, a cooking instructor and the owner of Glenfiddich Farm Cookery & Gardens, in Leesburg, Virginia, loves to incorporate apples into chutneys, sauces, butters, jams and jellies. For preservation, freezing is a simple alternative to canning. Woodier recommends blanching fresh slices or cored apples for one minute before placing them in the freezer. “Applesauce, baked goods, ready-to-bake pies or whole apples can all go in the freezer,” she says.

CHICKEN CURRY SALAD WITH APPLES AND PARSLEY
YIELD: 2 TO 4 SERVINGS 2 cups chicken stock ½ lb boneless skinless chicken breast ½ cup mayonnaise 1 tsp curry powder ¼ tsp paprika ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp freshly ground pepper 1 medium apple (Gala, Cortland or Honeycrisp), cored and diced 1 Tbsp raisins, chopped ½ cup torn fresh parsley leaves
In a small saucepan, add the chicken stock and set over medium-high heat. When the stock is just starting to bubble, reduce the heat to medium and submerge the chicken breast in the broth. Cook, turning once, for about 15 minutes, until the chicken is totally cooked through and firm. Remove the chicken breast from the stock and set on a plate to cool. (Strain and save any leftover stock for another use.) Once it is cool, cut the poached chicken into 1-inch diced pieces and place them in a medium bowl. Add the mayonnaise, curry, paprika, salt and pepper; fold together until the ingredients are well mixed and the spices are evenly incorporated. Add the apple, raisins and parsley leaves; fold together until just combined. Serve the salad stuffed in a pita, on sandwich bread or plated with a green salad on the side. Creating a Wildlife Habitat at Home
other organisms. Replacing a small patch of lawn with native trees, shrubs, ground cover and flowering plants accomplishes all four objectives. “Even a patio container with a plant to support pollinators makes a difference,” Tallamy remarks. “It’s about adding more resources to the landscape wherever possible.”
NATIVE Healing the Land, One Yard at a Time PRIORITIZE PLANTS by Tom Whittle
H
abitat destruction and invasive species are major drivers of wildlife decline in the United States, but this trend can be reversed. Homeowners can make a real difference by letting part of their yard go wild, rebuilding the web of life that sustains all living things.
A 2022 study in Landscape and Urban Planning shows that residential gardens with native plants can significantly improve habitat connectivity for pollinators and other wildlife, even in densely populated areas. While public parks are the cornerstone of wildlife conservation, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) estimates that more than 83 percent of the land in the lower 48 states is
privately owned, so individual landscaping choices hold the power to protect wildlife. “Don’t worry about the whole planet, figure out what you can do to influence the little piece of the Earth that you live on,” advises Dr. Douglas Tallamy, a professor of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware and co-founder of Homegrown National Park, an initiative that urges individuals and businesses to restore native habitats in their own spaces. Tallamy identifies four key responsibilities for every landscape: support pollinators, manage the local watershed, sequester carbon and support a viable food web by selecting plants that share solar energy with
Native plants are the backbone of a wildlife-friendly yard. They evolved alongside local insects, birds and animals, providing food and shelter that ornamental imports rarely match. For example, native oaks support more than 1,000 caterpillar species, which in turn become critical food for nesting birds. Use the NWF keystone plant locator to find the best native plants for specific ecoregions or zip codes: nwf.org/Native-Plant-Habitats/Plant-Native/ Why-Native/Keystone-Plants-by-Ecoregion. Globally, humans have introduced more than 37,000 invasive species, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. The 2023 Invasive Alien Species Assessment reported that non-native animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms contribute to 60 percent of all extinctions. “If everyone controlled invasive plants just on their property, we would reduce the invasive population by shrinking the annual rain of seeds from these plants,” says Tallamy, adding that this process may take a few seasons to yield results because many seeds lie dormant for a year or more.

Design the yard in layers to mimic natural ecosystems by grouping plants of different heights, root depths and types. Canopy trees offer nesting and shelter, mid-story shrubs provide cover and foraging, native perennials feed pollinators and ground cover shelters insects and small animals.
ADD WILDLIFE-FRIENDLY FEATURES
Enhance the yard’s habitat value with simple additions: • Bird baths provide fresh drinking and
bathing water. Clean them weekly to prevent mosquito breeding. Vagabond3490/shutterstock
• Birdhouses sized for local species offer critical nesting sites. • Bat boxes mounted on trees or poles and facing south/southeast attract bats that eat thousands of insects per night. • Bee hotels made from bundled hollow stems provide nesting spaces for solitary bees and wasps, which are among the most effective pollinators. • Leaf litter and brush piles provide overwintering habitats for fireflies, salamanders, toads and dozens of beneficial insects. • Standing dead trees (snags) are critical to certain bird species like the woodpecker, which carves out cavities for feeding or nesting purposes. Cut snags to about 15 feet to keep the home safe.
PRESERVE SOME WILD AREAS
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service recommends leaving parts of the yard untouched. Letting nature grow wild saves time and money while helping local wildlife thrive. Allowing dead flower stalks and seed heads to stand through winter provides food for sparrows and finches when ground insects and fresh vegetation are scarce. Skip aggressive fall cleanups of dead leaves to protect moth pupae, ground beetles and overwintering butterflies. Even small patches of unmowed grass shelter ground-nesting bees.
tors. A 2019 review in Biological Conservation found that insect populations worldwide are plummeting due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Choose organic, natural products and techniques to control pests and weeds, and always read labels before applying any product.
EMBRACE THE NATURAL PROCESS
Reversing biodiversity loss does not require acreage or expertise. It begins with a handful of native plants and the willingness to let nature reclaim a small corner of the world just outside the door. Tom Whittle is publishing manager of Natural Awakenings.

Power of Music for Growing Minds How Rhythm, Melody and Movement Support Child Development by Christina Connors
F
rom the first lullaby to the school choir solo, music has always been an integral part of childhood. It shows up in car rides and bath time, in marching bands, bedroom dance parties and the quiet hum of a parent rocking a baby to sleep. It feels so ordinary that it is easy to overlook how extraordinary it actually is. Research consistently demonstrates that musical experiences are not just entertaining; they serve as building blocks for the development of a child’s brain, body and heart.
YOUNG BRAINS INHERENTLY RESPOND TO SOUNDS When a child sings, claps, plays an instrument or simply sways to a beat, multiple regions of the brain simultaneously light up. Emily Bevelaqua, a licensed and board-certified music therapist in Connecticut, explains that regular engagement with music fortifies the pathways connecting the brain’s right and left hemispheres, thereby supporting growth across every area of development. Barbara Baker, a registered music therapist and preschool music educator with more than four decades of experience, describes this phenomenon as full sensory engagement. “Learning to play even a simple song asks a child to read notes, feel rhythm and coordinate their hands, all while building the same memory, attention and eye-hand coordination skills they will learn in the classroom,” she asserts. A recent study published in the journal eLife used brain imaging and motion tracking
to monitor infants as young as 3 months old. The researchers found that babies can process the structure of music almost from birth. However, the drive to physically move in response to it, the initial little bounce or sway, does not emerge until closer to their first birthday, as the brain’s auditory and motor pathways mature and establish connections. This serves as a poignant reminder that musicality is already at work long before a child can consciously hold a rhythm.
MUSIC PROVIDES DEVELOPMENTAL ADVANTAGES
Marina Demidiuk/shutterstock
Bevelaqua points out that music enhances working memory and pattern recognition—two foundational skills for reading, language and mathematics. “Music also supports the executive functions that children rely on to focus, plan and adapt,” she remarks. “Because it is so flexible, music can be tailored to whatever a child is working on, whether it involves counting, storytelling or simply sitting still for a few more minutes.”

The emotional and social benefits of music are equally profound. It provides children with a safe and structured space to explore self-regulation and emotional expression. Group singing, movement and playing instruments naturally enhance prosocial behaviors, including teamwork, cooperation, impulse control and turn-taking. According to Baker, music can serve dual purpos-
es: It can be an energy booster that encourages dancing and laughter, or a calming presence that helps a child settle down and relax. Songwriting, even a simple improvised tune, can become a genuine outlet for self-expression.
Tatiana Diuvbanova/shutterstock
Music and movement are natural partners in supporting coordination, balance and motor development. Whether a child is drumming, marching to a beat or dancing freely in the living room, they are practicing timing and body awareness in a way that feels like play rather than work.
CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM EARLY MUSICAL EXPERIENCES
According to Baker, “It is never too early to expose children to the wonders of music. From infancy through listening and gentle movement in a parent’s arms, followed by toddler-age group participation and eventually, a structured, teacher-led program, children can build the early musical skills that support learning any instrument down the road,” she explains.
KIDS RESPOND TO ENCOURAGEMENT RATHER THAN PRESSURE
Both experts concur that the goal is exposure, not perfection. Families can cultivate a love for music by playing a variety of songs at home, attending live performances, participating in group music or movement classes, and allowing a child to have a say in the instrument or activity that captivates their interest. Finding a teacher that shares a compatible personality is as crucial as selecting the right instrument.

The benefits of music stem from active participation, rather than hitting the right note every time. Children do not need to become proficient musicians to experience the positive effects of music on their brains, self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. They simply need the chance to sing, move and make a little noise. Christina Connors is a professional singer, a burnout prevention specialist, and CEO and executive director of Soulful Forest, Inc. Decoding Sleep Apnea Hidden Causes and Overlooked Symptoms by Zak Logan
S
leep apnea is a common, yet often undiagnosed, sleep disorder affecting millions worldwide. In the U.S. alone, 30 million people suffer from it, but 80 percent remain unaware, putting them at risk for serious health issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and depression. While obstructive sleep apnea caused by structural airway problems is the most prevalent form, central and complex sleep apnea, which are neurological in origin, also pose significant health risks over time.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Several factors may contribute to sleep apnea, such as poor posture, habitual mouth breathing and chronic systemic inflammation. According to Amy Dayries, an integrative dentist in Roswell, Georgia, obesity is a common companion of sleep apnea, however individuals of healthy weight can also be affected due to their specific airway anatomy, jaw or craniofacial structure, enlarged tonsils, nasal obstruction, age, family history or other factors. She also notes that chronic sleep disruption can trigger inflammatory and neuroendocrine responses, resulting in sympathetic dominance, where the body remains in a heightened state of alertness instead of resting.
THE IMPORTANCE OF AIRWAY HEALTH A narrow airway or jaw development problems may often be overlooked. Dr. Tony Ebel, a pediatric chiropractor and family health educator, emphasizes that the airway is a foundational, not just specialty, concern. “The airway is a neurologically controlled system involving the tongue, palate, jaw, throat and diaphragm, all coordinated by the brainstem and crani-
PeopleImages/shutterstock
Sleep apnea can range from mild to severe, but all types share a common problem: compromised oxygen levels due to disrupted breathing, which prevents deep, restorative sleep. Symptoms vary and may include sporadic snoring, mouth breathing, fatigue despite adequate sleep, headaches and brain fog. Treatments like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy and adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) are often prescribed, but a proper diagnosis is essential to explore all treatment options, including lifestyle changes.

can assess palate width, jaw position and tongue restriction, other health practitioners can also help identify the deeper root cause of the problem. Sleep physicians or pediatric ear, nose and throat doctors can order sleep studies and evaluate tonsils and adenoids. Myofunctional therapists can retrain tongue posture and orofacial muscle function, while neurologically focused chiropractors can assess brainstem and autonomic nervous system function, which often occurs underneath or upstream of all those other layers.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES FOR BETTER SLEEP
al nerves running through the upper neck, including the vagus nerve,” he explains. From a dental perspective, Dayries highlights oral or craniofacial features that require further screening such as a highly arched palate, significant dental crowding, a relatively small or retruded lower jaw that sits too far back relative to the upper jaw, enlarged tonsils or a large tongue. Research published this year in Frontiers in Allergy suggests that histamine-induced chronic nasal congestion from allergic rhinitis can worsen or even trigger obstructive sleep apnea.
SLEEP APNEA IN YOUNGSTERS Children and teenagers experience sleep apnea differently than adults. “Instead of loud snoring and obvious daytime sleepiness, it involves sweating during sleep, especially around the head and neck; picky or slow eating; gagging on certain textures; fatigue that gets written off as typical teenage behavior; falling grades; anxiety; depression; irritability; difficulty focusing; headaches; or getting sick often,” explains Ebel, who recommends getting a nervous system evaluation from a trained pediatric chiropractor.
SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE Dayries suggests seeking professional help if poor sleep becomes persistent and is accompanied by loud or habitual snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, nighttime choking or gasping. Dentists can play a crucial role in screening for signs and risk factors, and may refer patients for further medical evaluation. They can also collaborate with sleep physicians to treat adults with custom oral appliances that gently move forward and stabilize the lower jaw during sleep, keeping the airway open. This type of oral appliance therapy can be particularly beneficial for adults that cannot tolerate CPAP therapy or prefer an alternative. Ebel notes that while airway-focused dentists or orthodontists
Changing habits can significantly impact sleep apnea. Ebel recommends breathing through the nose, sleeping on the side or back, rather than the stomach, and using a pillow that fills the space between the ear and shoulder without pushing the head forward. Dayries suggests avoiding large meals shortly before bed, limiting caffeine and alcohol, especially later in the day, and maintaining a regular sleep schedule. By understanding the hidden causes and overlooked symptoms of sleep apnea, individuals can take proactive steps toward better breathing and sounder sleep, ultimately improving their overall health and well-being. How Dogs and Cats Bounce Back
Unlocking a Pet’s Natural Healing Powers by Ruth Roberts, DVM, CVA, CVH, CVFT, NAN
E
very dog and cat has a remarkable ability to heal, but recovery is about so much more than waiting for a cut to close or symptoms to disappear. True healing involves the whole animal, including the immune system, diet, environment, energy levels and emotional well-being. Their body naturally moves through a series of steps to clear up the damage, rebuild tissues and restore strength. Factors like a pet’s constitution, life force and living conditions can all influence how well—and how quickly—this process unfolds.
THE FOUR PHASES OF HEALING When a pet gets a cut, scrape or injury, the body immediately jumps into action in a series of overlapping processes: • Hemostasis is the body’s immediate first response to stop the bleeding. • Inflammation kicks in as immune cells rush to the area to clear damaged tissue and respond to potential threats. This stage is essential, even though swelling or redness can look frightening.
• Proliferation describes how the body builds new blood vessels, connective tissue and specialized cells to repair the injured area. • Remodeling is when new tissue strengthens and reorganizes, restoring function over time. These stages look different depending on the type of tissue or injury. The skin, liver, muscles, bones and nervous system all heal in their own unique ways, but the common theme is a coordinated effort to restore function when the body has the resources it needs.
REPAIR AND RESTORATION TIMES DIFFER Cats and dogs go through the same healing steps, but their pace and patterns can differ. A well-known 2004 study in Veterinary Surgery found that feline skin wounds take a little longer to heal, while dog skin closes and grows strong quickly. Species is not the only factor at play. Age, nutrition, injury severity, blood flow, medications and rest will influence how quickly pets bounce back. Cats, for example, may face extra challenges if illness or stress affects their appetite, making proper nutrition especially important during recovery.

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) takes a whole-animal view of recovery, in which qi (the body’s vital energy) and xue (or blood, the nourishing substance that feeds tissues) play central roles. A pet’s history, stress levels, chronic conditions and lifestyle can affect their qi and overall constitution. Holistic support often includes tailored nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine and appropriate activity. Dr. Chris Bessent, the founder of Medicus Veterinary Diets, The Simple Food Project and Herbsmith, with extensive training in TCVM and certifications in veterinary acupuncture, chiropractic and Chinese herbology, relies on a combination of Eastern and

Western approaches to evaluate the whole animal, rather than focusing on a single symptom, thereby providing the best possible environment for healing.
THE POWER OF REST AND TRANQUILITY A pet’s surroundings can make a big difference in their recovery. According to Bessent, “A quiet, calm home helps to balance qi and allows the framework for the pet’s body to heal.” A structured, gradually increasing activity plan will help to rebuild strength and balance without overloading healing tissues. Too much activity too soon can set back progress. Creating a serene, predictable home environment also reduces stress and supports better rest and appetite.

Finding Answers in the Darkness by Marlaina Donato
Food is the foundation of healing. Recovery demands extra energy and nutrients to maintain and rebuild tissue. During healing, adequate protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals play critical roles in immune function and tissue repair. The goal is not to overload the system with supplements, but to feed a balanced, species-appropriate and complete diet that matches the pet’s individual needs. According to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s global nutrition guidelines, individualized feeding plans are imperative, particularly when a pet is ill or recovering. Bessent’s integrative approach places a great deal of focus on food and nutrition. Through Medicus Veterinary Diets and The Simple Food Project, she has developed whole-food strategies that align nutritional quality with clinical requirements. For pets recovering from illness, surgery or injury, supporting their healing journey means giving the body the right conditions—plenty of rest, calm surroundings and the nutrients needed to do its amazing repair work. FUEL FOR RECOVERY
his time of year belongs to the unseen—dusty root cellars stocked with apples, the silent arrival of overnight frost and plot twists in the novel we set down while we grab a hot cup of tea. October is a master director, keeping us on the edge of our seats with warm, golden afternoons one moment and dark, rain-streaked windows the next. No wonder it is the month of both playful revels and ancient celebrations honoring the deceased, when Libra and Scorpio share the same astrological time slot, inspiring us to stir a deep cauldron of nostalgia and memory. The days are shorter, and evenings come with a chill in the air while we look forward to flopping into a favorite chair at the end of the day. Cinnamon-laden quick breads emerge from the oven, ready for eager plates and a pat of butter. Whether we love or hate it, pumpkin spice pops up on store shelves and in coffeehouses, and weekends would be incomplete without a scary movie on the screen. With its many moods, October is a mirror reluctant to reveal its true nature, inspiring us to find ourselves, mainly by delving deeper into common, everyday routines. Whether we begin a new dream journal, succumb to memories pulling at our sleeve during an unhurried walk, plant narcissus bulbs for next spring or light a candle to accompany a nightly gratitude practice, this is the time to tend to whatever lies beneath the surface. Mid-autumn motivates us to ignite our creative fires, retrieve old watercolors or coloring books, tune a neglected guitar and conjure new recipes. This dark time of the year pulls us inward to forgotten dreams that counterbalance the chaotic daily tango of to-do lists and obligations. It is also an invitation to entertain mystery and be content with not knowing the answers to every riddle. Marlaina Donato is an author, painter and composer. Connect at WildflowersAndWoodSmoke.com.
