Magby: MLK, Sailors share common cause - freedom By Jolene Scholl Southernmost Flyer

n raising their right hands, Sailors and officers alike take an oath to support and defend the Constitution and swear to bear true faith and alle-
giance to the same. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. also took an oath to fight for the right of all people to be treated justly and equally, said Elder Hayward Magby, Wednesday’s guest speaker at Naval Air Station Key
West’s Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance ceremony. The event, organized by the installation’s Multicultural Heritage Committee, included a video and a reading of Jamie McKenzie’s “Standing Tall” by the MHC members.
King’s holiday was established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan to recognize the civil rights leader. Magby focused on King’s calling to lead a movement that would change history. “Just like you, Dr. Martin Luther King was a soldier,”
Magby told the group of Sailors, civilians and visitors. “You know what it is to fight for the freedom of others. He took an oath and fought in the war for freedom.” see king page 7
