MEET THE NARI MILWAUKEE FOUNDATION
The NARI Milwaukee Foundation, Inc. was established in 1993 as the 501(c)3 charitable arm of NARI Milwaukee, Inc. The Foundation strives to be the leading advocate in the remodeling and home improvement industry. Through an extensive network of donors and volunteers, the Foundation invests in people to support and strengthen the industry. The Foundation holds yearly fundraising events to raise funds and also accepts individual and corporate contributions to support their efforts.
Industry Advocacy
The Foundation, in partnership with NARI Milwaukee, educates youth, educators, and adults seeking a career shift about opportunities in the remodeling trades by participating in activities like career expositions, school presentations, and career pathway development initiatives. The Foundation has also supported programs like Youth Build, Junior Achievement and SkillsUSA to increase awareness of trade career opportunities that are financially rewarding and personally satisfying. The Foundation also conducts an annual high school carpentry competition, the NextGen Trades Challenge, showcasing the knowledge, skills and abilities required for a successful trade career.
Education
The Foundation’s scholarship and grant program financially assists Wisconsin-based students and educational institutions. Students participating in a recognized traderelated program at a Wisconsin institution can apply directly through the Foundation. Locally, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) and Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) students participating in a recognized trade-related program can apply through their school for the Foundation’s endowment scholarship program. Our scholarships also provide support to those already working in the industry so they can pursue advanced training and certifications. We also offer grants to help high schools to develop Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in the trades by helping them purchase safety equipment, tools and materials.
Through the generosity of donors over the past 30 years, the Foundation has presented more than $300,000 in scholarships, grants, equipment and supplies to Wisconsin-based students attending local trade and technical schools and NARI Milwaukee members pursuing advanced remodeling certifications.
VOLUNTEER OR DONATE To get involved, call (414) 771-4071, email Foundation@NARIMilwaukee.org, visit NARIMilwaukee.org or scan the QR code.

NARI Milwaukee members contribute materials, labor, and expertise, transforming spaces while also offering hands-on, on-site experience to individuals interested in the trades, guided by skilled remodelers and trade professionals. Together, through the combined efforts of the Foundation and NARI Milwaukee members, we enhance the quality of life in our community, creating meaningful change and making a difference for those who need it most.
HIRING THE RIGHT PROFESSIONALS
Remodeling projects often start as ideas you’ve considered for months – or even years. When you’re finally ready to begin, the most crucial next step is selecting the right professionals. To set your home improvement project up for success and make informed decisions, it’s essential to understand the specific roles and services offered by the different types of experts available.
WHAT TYPE OF PRO DO YOU NEED?
Before hiring anyone, consider your project’s scope. Do you need structural changes, design help, or simply need a contractor to oversee the work? Here’s a guide to the typical roles involved in remodeling:
Architects
Architects are licensed professionals who specialize in designing and planning major remodels. If your project involves structural changes like moving walls, expanding rooms or altering your home’s exterior, an architect is essential. They will create detailed blueprints, ensure compliance with building codes and optimize space.
Key services include:
• Site evaluation and design planning
• Creating detailed blueprints and plans
• Ensuring code compliance and structural integrity
General Contractors
A general contractor (GC) manages the construction side of your remodel. If your project already has detailed plans, or doesn’t require major structural changes, a GC will coordinate the work. They oversee subcontractors, secure permits, manage timelines and keep the project within budget.
Key responsibilities include:
• Hiring subcontractors
• Managing permits and construction schedules
• Ensuring quality control and adherence to building codes
Design-Build Contractors
A design-build contractor combines both design and construction services. This approach simplifies the process, as you have a single point of contact for both design and build phases. It’s ideal for homeowners looking for a streamlined, cohesive experience.
Key advantages include:
• Unified design and construction teams
• One point of contact throughout the project
• Efficient project management and cost control
Designers
Designers specialize in creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. If your remodel focuses on interiors – such as redesigning a kitchen or bathroom – an interior designer can help bring your vision to life. They focus on layout, color schemes, materials and finishes.
Key services include:
• Interior layout and design planning
• Selecting materials, colors and furnishings
• Maximizing functionality and style within your space

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRO
Look for professionals with strong reputations. Check online reviews, ask for referrals and verify credentials through trusted organizations, like NARI. Contact past clients to learn about their experience and satisfaction with the professional’s work.
Make sure the professional has the necessary credentials and insurance coverage. This is particularly important for general contractors and design-build firms. Ask to see their certificate of insurance and review their contract for clear terms and conditions.
When requesting bids, ensure all contractors are quoting on the same scope of work and quality of materials. If one bid is significantly lower, it could be a red flag for hidden costs or subpar materials. The lowest price isn’t always the best – focus on value and quality.

A HEALTHY BASEMENT STARTS HERE
⊲ WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE REMODELING
Basements offer valuable “found space” with the potential to become comfortable living areas – from bonus family rooms and home offices to guest suites and entertainment spaces.
But because basements sit below grade, a successful remodel starts with ensuring the space is healthy, dry, and structurally sound. Taking time to evaluate key conditions before construction begins helps protect your investment, supports indoor air quality, and prevents costly issues after the remodel is complete.
FOUNDATION AND MECHANICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Before planning layouts or finishes, homeowners should take a careful look at the condition of their basement.
“Homeowners should take a slow walk around their basement and look for any pre-existing conditions like moisture, cracks in the foundation and any insulation or old flooring that could possibly contain asbestos,” says Bryan Ward, CKBR, design consultant with Renovations Group, Inc. “If you notice anything like that, definitely let the remodeling company know in advance so they can take a closer look and plan accordingly.”
Common signs of water infiltration include damp corners, water stains on drywall, mold growth, rotting wood, or a white, powdery residue on concrete or masonry surfaces.
Story Hill Renovations, LLC
This residue, known as efflorescence, forms when water moves through concrete or masonry and leaves salt deposits behind. While it may appear harmless, efflorescence is a sign that moisture is present and should not be ignored.
Ward explains mechanicals are another consideration. In older homes, mechanicals are often located in the middle of the basement. If that’s the case, they might need to be moved in order to create a more efficient layout.
According to Ward, other questions include, “Can the existing mechanicals support the additional square footage? Does the electrical have enough spare breakers or is an upgrade needed? Is the HVAC sized to handle the space or does it need to be zoned? Has the plumbing already been roughed in?”
Roughed in plumbing means that all water supply and drain pipes have been run and all pipe connections have been made. If not, a plumber will need to access the tie ins to allow for a fully functioning bathroom, kitchenette or wet bar.
DON’T SKIP RADON TESTING AND MITIGATION
Remodelers also recommend homeowners get a radon test before moving forward with a basement remodel.
Radon is a tasteless, odorless, invisible gas that can seep into homes and, in some cases, cause health problems. It’s actually a natural gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water.
If the test comes back positive, there are a number of mitigation options, depending on the type of foundation and where the home is located. Regardless of whether or not the homeowner moves forward with a basement remodel, the radon situation should be addressed.
MOLD PREVENTION
Basements are naturally more vulnerable to moisture, which makes mold prevention an essential first step before any remodeling begins. Addressing existing issues like leaks, foundation cracks, or standing water should happen before construction starts.
Proper exterior drainage, including correct grading and functioning gutters, helps direct water away from the foundation and reduces the risk of moisture intrusion. Inside the basement, using moisture-resistant materials like vapor barriers, mold-resistant wall materials, and
RADON MATTERS
Radon mitigation systems help improve indoor air quality by safely venting radon gas from the home: an important step before finishing a basement.
⊲ NARI Pro Tip: Consult your remodeler about materials and methods designed for below-grade spaces to minimize mold risk.
appropriate insulation can further protect the space. Adequate ventilation and humidity control are also key to maintaining healthy indoor air quality, while choosing hardsurface flooring instead of carpet in damp areas helps minimize long-term maintenance and mold risk. A qualified remodeling professional can recommend materials and construction methods specifically designed for below-grade spaces, helping ensure a healthier, more durable basement remodel.
HIRE THE EXPERTS
A basement remodel involves more than finishes and floor plans – it requires careful planning, proper moisture management, and coordination across multiple trades to ensure the space is comfortable, safe, and healthy for years to come.
From ventilation and insulation to electrical, plumbing, and structural considerations, working with experienced remodeling professionals helps prevent costly mistakes and ensures the finished space performs as well as it looks.

WALLPAPER YOUR WAY
Wallpaper has evolved, but one thing remains constant: homeowners love using it to reflect their personality. Whether covering an entire room or highlighting a single accent wall, wallpaper transforms walls into a canvas for style, color, and expression.
FULL-ROOM IMPACT
Covering a room in wallpaper makes a bold statement. From textured prints and non-repeating patterns, full-room wallpaper immerses you in color and design. In a half bath or cozy den, a lively pattern adds warmth, sparks conversation, and brings playful or sophisticated energy to any space.
ACCENT WALLS
Accent walls are the perfect way to add personality without overwhelming a space. A small splash of wallpaper can transform the entire look of a room. Even subtle prints or textures can bring elegance and timeless appeal.
NICHE DETAILS
When every detail matters, adding wallpaper to often overlooked areas like behind shelves or inset walls can make a big statement. These small pops of wallpaper add personality and visual interest without overwhelming the space. It’s a smart way to add pattern, texture, or bold color to your home. Understated pizzazz for the win!
The key to wallpaper is confidence. Don’t be afraid to try bold colors, busy prints, or unconventional placements, after all, wallpaper is not permanent, and it’s easy to change as your style evolves. From fullroom designs to accent walls, wallpaper gives every home a chance to showcase personality and creativity.

PLANNING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN
The kitchen is the heart of the home, a natural gathering place for everyday life: meals, conversations, homework, and entertaining. Because it plays such an important role, a kitchen remodel can be one of the most exciting –and overwhelming – endeavors. Before you get started, it's important to think about how you use the space and your overall goals: functionality, storage, flow, and aesthetics. Thoughtful planning upfront leads to a more efficient, comfortable, and timeless result. Use this checklist to get started.
Functionality & Workflow
Who uses the kitchen most often?
One primary cook, multiple adults, kids, or guests?
Energy efficiency, durability, resale considerations
A well-designed kitchen balances beauty with function. Working with an experienced, professional remodeler, such as a NARI member, ensures these questions are addressed thoughtfully, resulting in a kitchen that supports healthy living, efficient workflows, and lasting value for years to come.
ARE YOU READY TO DIY?
Should you attempt to save money by doing the job yourself? Do-it-yourself (DIY) jobs are a popular trend in the home improvement industry; however, before you grab a hammer and start swinging –you should know that the wrong decision could bring forth a number of potential problems. Before you decide, NARI recommends taking this DIY quiz ASAP!
☐ ☐ Do you enjoy physical work?
☐ ☐ Are you persistent and patient? Is everyone in your household?
☐ ☐ Do you have all the tools needed and, more importantly, the skills required to do the job?
☐ ☐ Do you have the time that will be required to complete the project?
☐ ☐ Will it matter if the project takes significantly longer to complete and remains unfinished for a long period of time?
☐ ☐ Are you prepared to handle the kind of stress this project will create in your family relationships?
☐ ☐ Do you really know all of the steps involved in the project?
☐ ☐ Have you received the installation instructions from the manufacturer to determine whether this is a project you still want to undertake?
☐ ☐ Is this a job you can do completely by yourself or will you need assistance? If you need a professional subcontractor, are you sure you have someone willing to work on a homeowner project?
YOUR SCORE
☐ ☐ Are you familiar with your local building codes and permit requirements? (Some jurisdictions require that the work be completed by a licensed and bonded professional in order to meet code.)
☐ ☐ Is it safe for you to do this project? (If you are not familiar with roofing or do not have fall protection restraints, you may not want to venture into a roofing job. Similarly, if you know nothing about electricity – leave it to the professional.)
☐ ☐ Will you be able to obtain the materials you need? Who will be your source of supply?
☐ ☐ Are you attempting to DIY for financial reasons? If so, have you looked at all of your costs, including the cost of materials, your time, and the tools you need to purchase?
☐ ☐ If you are trying DIY for the satisfaction of a job well done – can you ensure that the job will be “well done?” If it doesn’t come out right, how will you feel? Will you be able to afford to redo?
Total YES: Total NO:
If you answered “yes” to 8 or more of these questions, you might attempt a DIY project. But before you run to the nearest hardware store, revisit those questions you marked “no,” and carefully consider the potential problems you will face in those areas if you proceed with the project. Hiring a professional might be your best choice. NARI recommends that you take your time in selecting a home improvement partner, knowing that remodeling can be one of the most important investments that a homeowner can make. Start your search in our directory on page 51 – or online at NARIMilwaukee.org.
GREEN WITH ENVY
Once reserved for accents and accessories, green has firmly rooted itself as a leading color trend in home remodeling – and for good reason.
Known for its calming, restorative qualities, green brings a sense of balance and well-being into a space, echoing the comfort we associate with nature. From soft, muted sages to rich forest tones, green creates interiors that feel grounded yet fresh, soothing yet sophisticated. Homeowners are increasingly drawn to this versatile hue for its ability to promote relaxation while still making a confident design statement – turning kitchens, baths, and living spaces into environments that feel as good as they look.
A COOL & CALMING
Soft green walls set a calm, collected tone in this flexible home office space, creating a seamless visual connection to the adjacent kitchen. The muted green acts as a neutral backdrop – warm and inviting without overpowering –while crisp white trim and doors keep the space feeling fresh and architectural. It’s a great example of how green can quietly anchor a room, making it feel purposeful yet relaxed. Photo: Alair Homes Milwaukee
B SPA-INSPIRED STATEMENT
In this bathroom, green takes center stage through richly textured tile that brings depth and a spa-like sensibility to the space. The varied tones of green add movement and interest, pairing beautifully with clean white surfaces and simple fixtures. The result is soothing and elevated, proving that green works just as well as a statement finish as it does a subtle accent. Photo: RJ Builders, Inc.
C FRESH & FUNCTIONAL
This mudroom and laundry area showcases green in custom cabinetry, delivering both style and function. The soft, earthy green adds warmth to a hardworking space, making it feel intentional rather than purely utilitarian. Paired with light flooring and modern appliances, the cabinetry strikes a balance between practicality and design: an ideal example of how green can enhance everyday living spaces. SERVICE & MAINTENANCE THAT CAN SAVE YOU THOUSANDS
A HOME GUIDE FROM NARI MILWAUKEE
The routine service and maintenance tasks are the things that quietly protect your home, extend the life of major systems, and help you avoid costly repairs down the road.
Maintaining a home, especially in the Milwaukee area, requires ongoing care, informed decisions, and qualified professionals. This checklist is designed to help you protect your investment and know when to call a professional you can trust.
Here are the top five maintenance services we recommend homeowner prioritize to help save you money in the long run:
1 ANNUAL HVAC TUNE-UPS
Your heating and cooling system is one of the most expensive and hardest-working components of your home. Annual tune-ups help ensure the system runs efficiently, safely, and reliably: identifying worn parts, airflow issues, or minor problems before they escalate into system failures –often during the hottest or coldest days of the year. A well-maintained HVAC system also operates more efficiently, helping reduce energy bills and extending the lifespan of your system. “HVAC systems don’t usually fail all at once – there are warning signs long before that happens. Regular tune-ups catch small issues before they become expensive emergencies,” says Bill Brink, Kettle Moraine Heating & Air Conditioning, LLC.
2 SEWER & LATERAL INSPECTIONS
Sewer-related issues are one of the most expensive and disruptive problems a property owner can face. Sewer and lateral inspections use video cameras and robotics to examine the underground pipes connecting your property to the main sewer, identifying issues like root intrusion, cracks, blockages, and deteriorations before they become costly backups. “A simple inspection can reveal issues that can be fixed before costly damage occurs,” explains Lucas Drake, C & V Plumbing LLC. “Especially since most homeowners’ insurance policies don’t have nearly enough coverage for these types of claims.” Contractors can assess the condition of underground lines without invasive digging. These inspections are crucial for home buyers as well as proactive maintenance to prevent major damage, especially in older homes or those near trees.
“ Preventive maintenance is one of the smartest ways homeowners can protect their biggest investment,” says Mark Legawiec, Fox River Home Improvements. “It’s about spending a little now to avoid spending a lot later. ”
3 ROOF MAINTENANCE
Maintaining a roof in the Midwest requires a proactive approach because of the heavy snow, ice, wind, rain, humidity, and temperature swings. Regular inspections and maintenance can significantly extend its life and avoid costly water damage.
• Check for missing, cracked, curling, or loose shingles.
• Look for rusted, cracked, or lifted flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights.
• Sagging areas or soft spots can indicate moisture damage.
• Granules collecting in gutters are a sign of aging shingles.
• Clogged gutters are one of the biggest roof enemies in our area: be sure to have them cleaned at least twice a year –more if you have a property with trees.
A roof in poor health can lead to structural damage, mold, or insulation problems. Addressing issues early is far more affordable than repairing major interior and exterior damage caused by unnoticed leaks!
⊲ NARI Pro Tip: Roof work is dangerous and mistakes can shorten a roof’s lifespan. Use licensed, insured, and experienced local roofing professionals like those you can find with NARI. Find our NARI-member roofing professionals on p.76.
4 CHIMNEY, DRYER VENT, & GUTTER CLEANING
These often-overlooked services play a critical role in home safety and efficiency.
• Chimney cleaning helps prevent fires and ensures proper ventilation.
• Dryer vent cleaning reduces fire risk and improves dryer performance.
• Gutter cleaning prevents water from backing up and damaging siding, foundations, and landscaping.
“Clogged downspouts and gutters are some of the most common – and preventable – causes of home damage we see,” remarks Josh Elliott of All American Gutter Protection.
5 WATER HEATER FLUSHING
Sediment buildup inside a water heater can reduce efficiency, increase energy costs, and shorten the life of the unit. Annual flushing helps remove mineral deposits, allowing the heater to operate more effectively and consistently. “It’s a simple service that can improve performance, reduce energy costs, and extend the life of the unit,” notes Lucas Drake from C & V Plumbing LLC.
⊲ NARI Pro Tip: Routine service work may not provide the immediate visual impact of a remodel, but its value is undeniable. Preventive maintenance protects your investment, improves safety, and gives homeowners peace of mind.
Working with NARI professionals, ensures service is performed correctly and with your home’s long-term performance in mind.
By staying proactive and scheduling regular service work, homeowners can keep their homes running efficiently, safely, and comfortably, while saving thousands over the life of their home. See next page for a handy checklist of year-round maintenance tasks!

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA
Why hire a NARI Milwaukee Member to remodel your home?
Deciding to remodel your home is a big decision. Outside of buying a home, it may be the single largest investment you will make and you want to rest assured that the contractor you hire is dedicated and ethical, with sound business practices and demonstrated professionalism in the industry – but where do you begin?
NARI Milwaukee offers many services to both its member companies and you, the consumer. Most importantly, we have been the area’s leading home improvement and remodeling resource, providing consumers with the best in the industry for over 60 years. NARI Milwaukee’s goals of encouraging ethical conduct, sound business practices, and professionalism in the remodeling industry have led to the growth of the industry nationwide and made us a recognized authority in our field. With decades of experience, we are a forum for professional remodelers and an ally of the homeowner.
How does a contractor become a NARI Milwaukee Member?
NARI Milwaukee offers a “Regular” and an “Associate” membership. While there is no distinction between the costs, rights, privileges, and benefits of each membership type, different criteria are required to be approved as each type of member.
Regular Member
A business directly involved in the remodeling industry whose primary operation is the sale of its goods or services to the public.
CRITERIA
• The business is actively engaged in the remodeling industry and presently conducts business and/or has representation in the geographic area served by NARI Milwaukee.
• The business’s license, credentials, and/or certification numbers have been provided.
• A copy of liability insurance certificate has been provided.
• A copy of worker’s compensation insurance certificate has been provided when applicable.
• The business has provided, and NARI Milwaukee has checked, customer and supplier/credit references.
• The business agrees to abide by the NARI Milwaukee Code of Ethics.
Associate Member
A business whose primary relationship to the remodeling industry is advisory to a business, or is a service professional or supplier who does not primarily contract the sale of their goods or services with the general public.
CRITERIA
• The business is actively engaged in their industry and presently conducts business and/or has representation in the geographic area served by NARI Milwaukee.
• The business’s license, credentials, and/or certification numbers have been provided.
• A copy of liability insurance certificate has been provided.
• A copy of worker’s compensation insurance certificate has been provided when applicable.
• The business has provided, and NARI Milwaukee has checked, customer references.
• The business agrees to abide by the NARI Milwaukee Code of Ethics.
Grievance Resolution
While we would like to think all remodeling projects can be completed without conflicts, no one can realistically promise this. Problems do arise, and disputes become a reality.
Realizing this, NARI Milwaukee has instituted a “Grievance Resolution Procedure,” which assists the homeowner and the contractor in solving differences. The goal is to resolve concerns with a NARI Milwaukee member in a timely manner utilizing mediation, or if necessary, binding arbitration. In the course of your remodeling project, if you reach a stalemate, the first step is to attempt resolution through the Wisconsin “Right to Cure Law.” If this does not resolve the concerns, you may start the grievance resolution process by visiting NARIMilwaukee.org/Resolution and clicking on Request Assistance. Sometimes, all it takes is a third party to intercede to get these differences settled. In the initial stages, mediation is handled by a NARI Milwaukee representative trained in problem resolution.
If simple third-party mediation cannot resolve the problem, then it is necessary for a formal written list of concerns to be filed at the NARI Milwaukee office, including all written contracts and documentation for review by the Ethics and Bylaws Committee. Your concerns then go through a review process, and a volunteer Ethics Committee mediator is assigned to the case.
Depending on the situation, a mediator and/or other parties may review the documentation and inspect the project personally. Using the Construction Quality Standards for New Construction and Remodeling as a guideline, the mediator will try to resolve the situation with the homeowner and contractor. If the concerns are unable to be resolved through mediation, binding arbitration would then be conducted to resolve the dispute.
Binding arbitration is performed by the NARI Milwaukee Ethics and Bylaws Committee with a professional third-party arbitrator in a hearing format where both parties are present. An agreement is signed by both parties agreeing to abide by the Arbitration decision. In most cases, after a decision is rendered, the matter is then closed.
The NARI Milwaukee Ethics and Bylaws Committee has always been committed to resolving concerns in a logical and timely manner. Industry mediation/ arbitration is generally considered a more efficient and less expensive way to solve issues.
CODE OF ETHICS
Each member of NARI Milwaukee is pledged to observe high standards of honesty, integrity and responsibility in the conduct of business by:
• Promoting only those products and services which are functionally and economically sound, and which are consistent with objective standards of health and safety.
• Making all advertising and sales promotion factually accurate, avoiding those practices that tend to mislead or deceive the customer.
• Writing all contracts and warranties such that they comply with federal, state, and local laws.
• Promptly acknowledging and taking appropriate action on all customer complaints.
• Refraining from any act intended to restrain trade or suppress competition.
• Obtaining and retaining insurance as required by federal, state, and local authorities.
• Obtaining and retaining licensing and/or registration as required by federal, state, and local authorities.
• Taking appropriate action to preserve the health and safety of employees, trade contractors, clients and the public.
NARI CERTIFICATION
During the remodeling process, people open their homes to an unfamiliar person, making it important to choose and build a relationship with a remodeler who has experience and knowledge of the industry. Starting with a NARI member, the consumer knows that remodeler has chosen to elevate their business to professional levels, has been reviewed for longevity in the business, financial stability and positive reviews and recommendations by business partners and consumers.
Choosing a NARI Certified Professional, the consumer now knows the remodeler has demonstrated advanced technical and business management skills. NARI Certification is a robust and challenging process. It is open to remodeling professionals who demonstrate extensive expertise in their field, meet the criteria to sit for the exam and then pass the testing process. Certification ensures that consumers are choosing a professional with years of experience, dedication to ongoing training, and a commitment to ethical conduct.
How do remodelers become NARI Certified Professionals?
NARI Certification is a challenging process, requiring experience and a deep understanding of the industry, sound business practices, and a commitment to professionalism. Before becoming a Certified Professional, NARI members must receive a review by the NARI Certification Board based on an outline of their hands-on experience, industry training, involvement in continuing education, technical skills, business management practices, and association and community service.
After meeting the criteria, the members must complete a comprehensive written exam, which covers all phases of the remodeling process. Professional remodelers test their knowledge of numerous topics, such as business management, building codes and construction law, plans and specification, proper and safe use of equipment and tools, standards of practice, mathematics and special skills.
