Murdered and set alight Man in his twenties’ charred body found in disused pump station at Swakopmund Sharlien Tjambari
The Swakopmund police is looking for the murderer or murderers of a man whose decomposed body was found in a disused pump station on Swakopmund's eastern outskirts. The body was set alight and the police believe the man was murdered recently and that the body was dumped at this location and set alight, possibly in attempts to destroy evidence. The deceased's skin complexion indicates he could be of coloured origin and the coast's communities are urged to contact the police should they belief they could identify the deceased or may have a relative or friend whose whereabouts are unaccounted for the past few days. The man is believed to have been in his twenties, most probably late twenties. Passers-by found the man's body in the disused pump station on Wednesday. The location was given as the eastern outskirts of Swakopmund, close to the Swakop River and the Kramersdorp suburb. The Namibian Police's regional crime investigations coordinator in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, confirmed passers-by made the grisly discovery. The man was murdered recently at a location yet unknown and the body was dumped at the site where the discovery was made and set alight. A white cell phone and a packet of cigarettes were found close to the charred body, further explained Iikuyu. A post-mortem examination will determine how the man died. In the absence of an identity, no next-of-kin were traced yet and the communities in Erongo are urged to report to their nearest police station or the investigating officers should they have information that could possibly lead to discovery of the person's identity and also the perpetrator or perpetrators who might be responsible for his death. FNB gives back to the community
Ernst Lichtenstrasser (58) will be tried in the Windhoek High Court for the murder of two directors of the Namibia Institute for Mining and Technology (NiMT) Eckhart Mueller (72) and his deputy Heimo Hellwig (60). Lichtenstrasser is accused of having gunned down in cold blood on the morning of 15 April 2018 of Mueller and Hellwig as they arrived for work at the NiMT campus at Arandis. Magistrate Nelao Brown ordered on 30 April this year a complete record of the proceedings so far in the Swakopmund magistrates court be transferred to the High Court of Namibia. Lichtenstrasser will make a first appearance before a judge of the High Court on 5 June. Lichtenstrasser is expected to face Advocate Antonia Verhoef, who will be the State Prosecutor in the case. Advocate Verhoef is the country's deputy Prosecutor-General and counts among the top prosecutors in the country with one of her successful prosecutions in 1999 of Thomas Florin, the man who killed and dismembered his wife, Monica Florin, in the couple's home in the then Brücken Strasse (Libertina Amadhila Str.) in Swakopmund.

Namibia’s health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula says Namibia’s most critical stage in the prevention of the spread of the new Coronavirus is during stage 2. Namibia has entered stage two on 5 May, follow several weeks of a countrywide lockdown period. Stage 2 allows for the countrywide free movement of people, yet with compulsory social distancing measures including the wearing of face mask in public places. In a press statement yesterday Dr. Shangula confirmed the country’s confirmed Coronavirus cases remain at 16, with nine people that made recoveries. Continues on page 2

Dr Shangula admitted the past few weeks are difficult for Namibians but used the opportunity to thank the nation for its cooperation. “Today (Thursday 7 May 2020) is the third since the end of the countrywide lockdown and the beginning of Stage 2. The process required tremendous adjustments in our way of life, from being confined to our houses to being allowed to be in public; from being required to carry a permit when traveling to being free to travel to any part of the country. In addition, whereas under lockdown, the public was encouraged to wear face masks, now it is mandatory to do so. The waring of masks comes with own challenges, especially getting used to wearing one”, the minister said. Note: a total of 864 people were quarantined in Namibia to contain the spread of the Coronavirus. Of these people, a total of 543 people were already discharged from quarantine and a total of 313 people remain in quarantine.

Registration of Vulnerable Residents In recent days the subject of registering vulnerable community members to qualify for possible food aid has elicited some discussion and incorrect assumptions on social media platforms. In order to rule out any confusion around the matter, the Office of the Mayor hereby wishes to put the following on record: It is not true that the form being used for the registration of such community members is “fake news” as alleged by some. The form is legitimate and has specifically been designed to keep a database of all such persons who may in future require food or other aid, especially since the outbreak of COVID-19 and subsequent measures have wreaked havoc on many people's lives. Being the right and proper institution to keep such a database, and to control all distribution of food and other items to the needy, the Office of the Mayor has therefore deemed it necessary to update the register on a continuous basis. To speed up the process, the Office of the Mayor has co-opted volunteers to assist by registering vulnerable residents in the whole of Walvis Bay. In other words, there is no distinction between residents within the community, or where they live within the boundaries of Walvis Bay. Should anyone doubt the authenticity of the registration form, which should contain an original date stamp of the Office of the Mayor, they are welcome to verify the details thereof by phoning 064- 201 3268 or 081122 0816.

The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT), a Trust under the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, responsible for promoting consumption of fish in Namibia heeded to the call by donating 373 food and toiletries parcels valued at N$200 000 to the Mayoral Fund to benefit members of the Walvis Bay Community. The Chief Executive Officer of the Namibian Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) Victor Pea said that the NFCPT try in their humble way to restore the dignity of the community members who are at the receiving end by the partial shutdown in economic activities as a result of the COVID19 pandemic. Pea said “The donation is purposely meant to benefit the vulnerable households here in Walvis Bay. It is a standing practise that the sitting mayor of Walvis Bay serves as the Chairman of the WBEPZMC. A social media campaign in recent days accuses Alderman Wilfried of having a clash of interest. A company he is involved with allegedly has dealings with the WBEPZMC. ”Having learnt of the accusations the WBEPZMC obtained legal advise. From this legal advise it can be confirmed the mayor under no circumstances contravened any rules of the Company nor did he involve himself in any underhand dealings as his accusers allege”, an informed source said yesterday, hours before a press statement in this regard was made public. Apollo the coastal elephant doing well Eileen van der Schyff
The coastal elephant's translocation to Naankuse, who funded the 11-hour operation, was a success and the gentle giant is not only doing well in his new home, but he also received a name, Apollo. The bull was first kept in a one-hectare temporary release pen for observation before being released into the nature reserve on 20 April. Naankuse's AntiPoaching Unit (APU) monitors Apollo each day, his GPS collar allowing the team to track his movements. Apollo has since made acquaintance with two fellow bull elephants that came to the Reserve by Naankuse in 2017 when they were removed from a situation that would have led to them losing their lives. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism expresses their appreciation towards the public about their concern for the animal and gave their assurance that they will do everything possible for the elephant's survival and wellbeing. The decision to translocate the elephant was made by the ministry based on the risk the elephant posed to human lives as the elephant made his home close to people living in the area. The elephant also caused damage
to the golf course and damaged plants and vegetation. Furthermore, the vegetation in the river was not suitable for the elephant and this caused concern for the bull's health. The elephant now, in his new home, has sufficient vegetation and water and he also has other elephants around him. The ministry thanks the Namibian Police for controlling crowds and for the escorting of the truck to ensure there were no unnecessary delays which could potentially have compromised the wellbeing of the bul. The ministry thanks Cowboys and Swakopmund Hire Sales and Services for the heavy equipment and machinery for the translocation of the elephant bull, the management and staff of Naankuse who funded and offered a home for the elephant. The ministry further thanks the staff of the Ministry of Environment and tourism for ensuring the animal's wellbeing and safety.

FNB Omaruru staff dug into their own pockets and made up food packages for delivery in the Hakahana suburb. Abiud Tjikusere, Business Relationship Manager in Omaruru, said that every Namibian, willing and able to assist, should try and lend a helping hand during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Many extremely poor Namibian households have been negatively impacted and we believe that no one should go without at least one meal per day. We hope this small gesture will go some way in alleviating the plight of the most vulnerable in our community.�

In einer zweiten Studie wurden den Männern nur Fotos der Frau mit je anderer Haarfarbe gezeigt. Die Männer hielten die Brünette für besonders attraktiv, für intelligent und aufgeschlossen. Die Blondine wurde als bedürftiger wahrgenommen. Die Forscher führten beide Ergebnisse zusammen und kamen zum Schluss: Eine als bedürftig empfundene Blondine fördert das Selbstvertrauen der Männer. Die Sorgen, die sie während des Hausarrests nun wegen ihrer Haare haben, geben ihnen recht. Wem zeigt man sich denn noch? Doch es kommt die Zeit danach. Und das dürfte bei der Farbwahl wieder einen Einfluss haben, was tausend Studien belegen: Blond gilt als attraktiv, weil es mehr Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. “Helle Farben fallen auf”, schreibt die Biologin Jena Pincott in ihrem Buch “Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes?”. Vor dem GobabisHotel hielt er - Herr Müler wusste Bescheid - packte Bier und Schnaps auf die Karre drehte den Ochsen Richtung Heimat - gab Lukas einen Klaps auf den Hintern und wenig später konnte Dohna seinem Ochsen sagen: “Brav, Lukas, hast du wieder mal gut gemacht!” Nach Beendigung des Krieges im Jahre 1915 wollte sich der Graf den neuen Herren gebührend vorstellen und lud die Gobabiser Polizei zum Umtrunk ins Hotel Schülein ein. Alle kamen, setzten sich an die Bar, und jeder erhielt einen funkelnagelneuen Nachtpott voll Sekt! “Prost!” sagte der Graf. Liebe Küstenleser! Chamäleons gehörten in meiner Kindheit quasi zu unseren Haustieren. Immer wieder mal wurde einer dieser “Wüstendrachen” in einem Busch im Garten entdeckt. Dann setzten wir uns das seltsame Tierchen mit den kugeligen Augen und lustigen Greiffüßchen auf die Schulter, wobei es fauchte und sich dunkel ärgerte. Ja, es wurde vor Ärger tatsäch-

Dieses Chamäleon war erstaunlich agil, um von der Fotografin wegzukommen, die es auch noch am Schwanz festhielt, um wenigstens ein paar Bilder zu erhaschen. Nicht umsonst nennen die Afrikaaner das Chamäleon verkleurmannetjie (Männchen, das sich verfärben kann). Jedes “Südwester Kind” weiß, dass das Reptil seine Farbe wechselt, um sich zu tarnen. Das ist jedoch nur eine Seite der Medaille. Ihr Farbwechsel hilft den “Erdlöwen” (Bedeutung des griechischen Begriffs chameleon) , die Körpertemperatur zu regulieren. Da sie zur Klasse der wechselwarmen (poikilothermen) Reptilien gehören, deren Körpertemperatur allein von der Außentemperatur abhängt (ektotherm), kühlt ihr Körper in einer kalten Wüstennacht aus. Dann färben sie sich dunkel, so dass sie mit der aufgehenden Sonne zum Wärmekollektor werden. Je höher die Körpertemperatur, desto heller wird auch ihre Hautfarbe. Weniger bekannt ist die Tatsache, dass die Färbung der Haut mit der Stimmung des Chamäleons zusammenhängt. Als mir vor einigen Wochen auf einer Farmwanderung
schwarz ärgern oder rot vor Wut werden - ist bei diesen Wüstenlebewesen Realität. Ihre unterschiedliche Färbung kann ihren “Gemütszustand” ausdrücken, z.B. Kampfbereitschaft, Angst, oder Unterwerfung. Die bunteste Färbung weisen gravide bzw. schwangere Weibchen oder balzende Männchen auf. Weibchen signalisieren durch ihre Färbung auch ihre Paa-rungsbereitschaft. Nach der Paarung nehmen sie eine neue Färbung an, um lästige Männchen fernzuhalten. Normalerweise lebt diese Tierart auf Bäumen. Sie hat es jedoch im Laufe ihrer Evolution geschafft, sich dem heißen Sand anzupassen. Die Wüstenechsen wirken geradezu gelassen und fast schon tranig, wenn sie ihre zarten Füße im gemächlichen Schneckentempo einen vor den anderen sanft in den heißen Sand setzen. In der bildhaften Sprache der Afrikaaner ist das Chamäleon daher auch als trapsuutjie (Leisetreter) bekannt.
Da diese Bewegung mit dem bloßen Auge nicht wahrnehmbar ist, mussten Forscher den Zungenwurf mit Hochgeschwindigkeits-Videoaufnahmen enträtseln. Dabei stellten sie fest, dass die Beute nicht etwa einer chemischen Substanz wegen an der Zunge kleben blieb, sondern dass die Zunge kurz vor ihrem Aufprall einen Saugnapf bildet, der wie der Gummipfropfen eines Spielzeugpfeils an dem Opfer haftet. In Afrika gibt es viele Menschen, die Angst vor dem Minidrachen haben und meinen, sie gelten als Boten des Unglücks. Auch in dem Land, das zwei Drittel aller Chamleons beheimatet, nämlich Madagaskar, besteht der sonderbare Irrglaube, dass sie zum Beispiel eine schwere Geburt oder das Ausbleiben eines Heiratskandidaten verheißen. Dabei sind es wahrhaftig nur sanfte Leisetreter, die wenig Verteidigungsmechanismen haben und daher sehr verwundbar sind. Ihre Susann Kinghorn

Coaches and athletes make sacrifices Rudi Bowe
The year started well for most coaches and athletes from the different sports codes in Namibia. But along came Covid-19 to change the status quo and force all to make sacrifices. Athletics is no exception. According to coach Hennie Horn of Swakopmund, the preparation of an athlete is process of years. Namibia has among the top talent and they need exercise and training. The lockdown posed a propblem in this regard and with the future of sport events both nationally and internationally uncertain athletes face a third challenge - exposure to competition. Horn explains: “Every athlete is different and everyone's preparation is different. We as coaches need to keep athletes positive during these challenging times and motivate them to maintain their training momentum going without us supervising. Athletes need to stay innovative to be able to exercise during lockdown and during compulsory social distancing, without breaking the law”. Horn added he believes athletes and coaches alike must stay positive, keep in touch and sending exercise programs they can follow whilst at home. Namibia as a nation,
including sport will overcome this crisis and emerge better and stronger. In soccer there is the same approach. A coach said the Covid19 crisis is a time for sport across the spectrum to stand together and speak as one. No matter the sport code, the situation affects everyone without prejudice and this is a challenge for sport in Namibia as a whole. The same persistence an athlete approaches his or her sport code, the same persistence is needed to overcome the Covid-19 challenge. The Crete Gymnastics Club when asked for an opinion said Convid-19 had an effect on its membership and in essence left many aspects of the day to day running and the sports code as a whole with much out of their control. “It is human nature to make the best of every situation and we are determined every bit of the way to emerge from this better prepared. The Club opened a YouTube Channel and creates training videos for the different age groups. We hope to get back on track with contact training as soon as permissible. Of course with the necessary safety precautions to
remain vigilant against the spread of the new Coronavirus. The Chairman of Rossmund Golf Club, Marco Swartz says: “Sports create well needed exercise to sportsmen and sportswomen.
