Two men, one kayak and 1 600 kilometers: Ian Daniel and Desmond Howard from Windhoek will attempt a new record and paddle the entire Namibian coastline from the mouth of the Orange River to the Kunene mouth. If everything goes to plan, they will start their adventure on Monday (10 July). “Ian has always had this idea of a big adventure on a surf-ski,” explained Ciske Smith to namib times. Ciske is the moral support and back-up driver for the two kayakers. She continues: “When Ian saw that no one has ever done the Namibian coastline with a surf ski, he decided that's what he wants to do.” That is how the Skeleton Coast Challenge border2border was born. While Ian and Desmond will paddle in a double surf ski, Ciske will travel by land and meet up with them regularly with supplies. The planning for this once in a life-time trip started a while ago. “We are quite nervous,” Ian admitted to namib times. Ciske added: “After all, it's Continues on Page 2

Two new navy vessels delivered for Namibia Two navy vessels destined for service in the Namibian Navy were delivered in Walvis Bay yesterday. The two vessels were shipped to Namibia on the cargo deck of the Chinese-registered cargo vessel Da Qing and lowered into the water alongside at berth number seven in the port of Walvis Bay. A spokesperson for the Namibia Defence Force in Windhoek yesterday confirmed the delivery of the two naval vessels, but said there is limited information available as to the origin of the vessels and the role these vessels would fulfil. The spokesperson also confirmed the Ministry of Defence will make an announcement soon and that quayside christening ceremonies would take place in the weeks to come during which these two latest naval assets will be showcased to the Namibian public.

The entire trip is expected to last about 30 days. “They intend to start on Monday, but that is very much dependent on the weather,” Ciske says. While normal kayaking requires a lot of power and strength, surf skiing is a fairly new sport. “With a surf ski you literally paddle and then surf the waves the entire time. It is not about strength, but about riding out the opportunities,” she explained. It is exactly for this reason the commencement of their trip depends on the weather. “If it is east weather conditions they cannot start,” she noted. “But they will definitely start sometime next week.” While Ciske meets up with the two paddlers at various strategic places, including Lüderitz, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Terrace Bay the duo will have extended periods they will have to camp on the beach each night and keep their supplies rationed. “In the surf ski itself, they carry more than enough water, food, a tent, sleeping bags, a solar charger, a GPS and much more,” she says. They will also have one fishing rod, in case somewhere along the way they feel like eating fish. If Ian and Desmond do make the trip within 30 days, they will have to paddle an average of more than 50 kilometers daily. “We set out a route with various stages. Sometimes they will paddle 25 kilometers a day, sometimes up to 200 kilometers,” Ciske explained. Both Ian and Desmond are avid kayakers, having recently returned from the Investec Mauritius Ocean Classic Surf Ski week. This surf ski trip they used as a training camp for their new challenge. “We are very, very excited. It's going to be trip of a lifetime,” Ian concluded. The murder trial against Jandré Dippenaar, accused of having caused the deaths of six people in a horror car crash on the Henties Bay to Swakopmund road on 29 December 2014 is set to resume next Wednesday (12 July) in the Swakopmund regional court. Taking the witness stand will be German national Antonia Joschko, the sole survivor of her family of four. Joschko is set to relive the events of 29 December 2014, when she lost her father, mother and sister in the crash. At the time, she was 16 years old. The collision, which was allegedly caused by Dippenaar, caused the death of her father Markus Walter Helmut Joschko, mother Stephanie Schermuck-Joschko and her sister Alexandra Marlene Joschko. The Joschko family was travelling towards Swakopmund in a Ford Ranger pick-up when a head-on collision with a Toyota FJ Cruiser allegedly driven by Dippenaar took place. Of the four occupants in the FJ Cruiser, only Dippenaar survived. The three passengers in the FJ Cruiser died on the spot. They were JC Horn, Dinah Pretorius and Charlene Schoombee. He is facing various charges, including six counts of murder. Since the beginning of this high-profile case, Antonia Joschko with her lawyer and other family members repeatedly had to travel to Namibia for the court case. She waited patiently to give her testimony. When Joschko was finally called to give evidence during the trial in January this year, Dippenaar's lawyer, advocate Louis Botes, objected. Botes requested time to prepare for the witness and requested the case to be postponed to a later date. He said that an expert from Johannesburg is required to be present before Joschko could testify. The case was therefore remanded to 12 July. It was set down for three days. After this, the trial will again be postponed to 20 November. Two weeks are set down for the continuation of the trial in November. Dippenaar, who is out on a warning, is facing a count of reckless or negligent driving alternatively inconsiderate driving, a count of fraud alternatively furnishing false information, a count of not being in possession of a driver's license and six counts of murder. It is the first time in Namibian history that a person is facing murder charges in connection with a fatal car accident. Since the start of the trial, the family of members of the victims have been present in court throughout. It has been an emotional rollercoaster, as various eyewitnesses have up to date given testimony of what transpired on that fateful day. One witness testified that Dippenaar did overtake on a blind crest and in doing so caused the head-on collision.

WBCG ELATED BY ONE STOP BORDER POST BILL PASS The Walvis Bay Corridor Group in a news statement on its website this week welcomed the passing of the One-Stop Border Posts Control Bill. Namibia has several trade corridors that link the port of Walvis Bay as import- and export hub to markets in neighbouring countries. However, smooth import and export trade can only take place if and border posts between Namibia and her neighbours have unified border clearance paperwork in place. This new legislation paves the way to implement standardised procedures between Namibia and neighbouring Angola, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa. The news statement reads: "The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) has welcomed the One-Stop Border Posts Control Bill recently passed in the National Assembly. Finance Minister, Honourable Calle Schlettwein, who tabled the Bill, stated that One-Stop Border Posts indeed have the potential to improve trans-border traffic in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and with regards to law enforcement. "As a result, it can curb illicit trade and act as a better gate keeper at our borders", he stated. A One-Stop Border Post is an arrangement between countries, which unifies border clearance documents in order to facilitate the smooth movement of people and goods across countries. A trusted neighbor who keeps a vigilant eye on your home is one of the best crime deterrents there is. 4) Build a partnership with police focused on solving problems instead of reacting to crisis. Make it possible for neighbors to report suspicious activity or crimes without fear of retaliation. 5) Clean up the neighborhood! Organizing a neighborhood clean up is great way to get people out of the house, and working together around a common cause. Buildings with broken windows, abandoned cars, and even litter sends a message to criminals that the community has become complacent. Call the city public works department and ask for help cleaning up. 6) Get creative. This also provides great opportunities to update your neighbours on your current schedule, or let them know if you'll be out of town. 14) Express support for funding and effective implementation of community wellness programs and events by writing to elected officials in your city. 15) Help to connect school services to outside networks of community services that can help students and their families cope with domestic or financial problems. Sometimes the right combination of networking, organizing, and communicating can have a huge impact on our surroundings. You don't have to give up all your free time, or perform nightly patrols around the perimeter of your neighbourhood to prevent crime in your community. A little effort can go a long way!

Two houses in 6th street, situated next to one another behind Shoprite in Walvis Bay, has been left abandoned by their owners and have since been stripped and become a hide out. The houses are in terrible condition, as built in cupboards and appliances have been stolen and the places left in a mess of clutter, filth and faeces. Since these houses have been abandoned, the number of burglaries in the street have gone up. Residents of the street have made numerous complaints to the municipality as well as the owners, about the houses attracting visitors at night, who are suspected of using the houses as a hiding place. These visitors are nowhere to be found when day breaks. "These people can be heard during the night, they are loud. Since the houses have been left empty, the street has experienced more break-ins and we believe that they use these empty houses to hide.�

Amazing, brilliant, fantastic: African Vocals return from second Germany tour

The African Vocal in Swakopmund started out as a group of friends singing for fun. Now they have received international fame having recently returned from their second tour in Germany. The a cappella group spent a month in Europe - and are already planning their next trip. Amazing. Brilliant. Fantastic. These are just some of the words the band members used when they were asked to describe their experiences during the recent tour. "I really enjoyed Germany. There are so many similarities between Germany and Swakopmund. I took it like a second home," said one band member smiling. What is more amazing: A part of the proceeds the group generated during their tour, be it ticket or CD sales, they will soon donate to two charities in Swakopmund. "We want to give back to the community", explained Joel Nambuli, the group's leader. The two organizations they chose to benefit are Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO) and the Tangeni Shilongo Trust. The tour started on 1 May. Eight members of the group travelled to Germany. The trip ended exactly one months later – after having performed at 21 shows across Germany. "It was a lifetime experience. The cultural exchange was amazing," Nambuli continues. "We travelled to Germany to bring a message from Namibia. We are proud to play Namibian music and enjoy it." The highlight of the trip? A performance at the Musiknacht in the town Kirchheim unter Teck. A total of 47 bands performed and the African Vocals were the only band from Africa. "It was an indescribable feeling as more than 400 people were looking at us performing. It felt like we were the new Michael Jackson", explained Nambuli.

While talking about their experiences all band members agreed: They will conduct their next Germany tour in 2019 – they have already begun planning the trip. They wish to express their gratitude to all the sponsors, mentors and helpers, who have made the last tour possible. "When we started we never thought to get this far. It is an amazing journey, looking back," Nambuli continues. The African Vocals, consisting of a dozen performers, started singing in 2012 after sharing a unique love and passion for music and creativity. As they got more and more recognition for their work, they went semi-pro and performed for tourists at various venues in Swakopmund. They had no group uniform and no instruments to their name and that inspired them even more to go out and approach the business community for sponsorship. They had little success. They performed for free or for food, but have since built up quite a name – they regularly perform at various social events. They continue to promote African culture and Namibian traditions through music. ·The Group's first tour to Germany was in 2014. A highlight of the recent Germany tour of the African Vocals from Swakopmund. Performing at the Musiknacht in the town Kirchheim unter Teck. 47 bands performed at this event and the African Vocals were the only band from Africa.

A total of 35 Namibian artisans have since July 2015 benefitted from Langer Heinrich Uranium's post-trade internship, a program which allows for newly qualified artisans to work at the mine for a period of one year to gain practical experience. In an overview this week Langer Heinrich Uranium's Human Resources Manager, Mr. Johan Roux, explained LHU focusses on attracting graduates and interns in order to develop a skills pool for the future. From this pool of skilled and experienced artisans, future employees and management material can be sourced. Roux explained the first intake of artisan interns was on 1 July 2015. To date a total of 35 interns have been supported by LHU. These include nine boilermaker interns, two control and instrumentation interns, nine electrician interns and 15 fitting & turning interns. Furthermore, of all the interns, 17% were females. All artisans are from previously disadvantaged groups in Namibia. This year, a total of eleven interns joined LHU on a one-year contract, which will expire on 30 June 2018. Roux said the program has proven to be very successful, with 16 out of the 35 (46%) artisan interns who could be hired on a full-time basis in the meantime.

Coastal Car Hire donates to Ouma Jeanne’s school

Coastal Car Hire recently made a donation worth N$7 000 toward a day care run by 82 year old “Ouma Jeanne” with dedication for more than 30 years. The day care is proof that no one is 'too old' to contribute to the community. Coastal Car Hire donated brand new colourful tables and chairs, along with a tv, puzzles and games, as well as educational software.

Walvis Bay Winter Bird Count The Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia (CETN) is hosting a summer and winter bird count every year, since since 1983 at the Walvis Bay lagoon and other wetlands.

The counts are conducted to deter-mine the number and species of birds found. The Walvis Bay lagoon is wetland of international importance (RAMSAR). Bird numbers and diversity of species are good indicators of the health of the wetland. The diversity of marine birds found along our coast and the Walvis Bay lagoon is a major tourist attraction. and a natural asset of our country. The backbone of the annual bird counts is volunteers, using their own resources and time to conduct Sponsors also play a major role for the provision of financial assistance. Businesses that over years became reliable partners of the CETN are: Walvis Bay Salt Refiners, Namib Marine Services, Radio Electronic and the Namibian Breweries. Data gathered by the CETN during bird counts have been used regularly in the past in the publica-tion of scientific- and popular articles. This year the winter count will be on 15 and 16 July. The CETN is inviting volunteers to assist with the counting process. Near stampede as thousands of angry parents compete for 73 Grade 1 places Police reservists were dispatched to restore order at the Kuisebmond Community Hall yesterday morning, after chaos erupted and escalated into a near stampede as more than a thousand agitated parents tried to register their children for Grade 1 for 2018 at Tutaleniand Nara primary school. The schools can only accommodate 38 and 35 Grade 1's respectively.The registration process was held at the community hall for logistical purposes, but officials misjudged the overwhelming response from parents who are desperate for their children to find place for Grade 1 in 2018. There was also a lack of control over the number of people and when impatience got the better of many, the situation got out of control and assistance of members of the police was called in. Burundian national caught with four grams of cocaine The police arrested a Burundian national over the weekend at a popular dance club in Swakopmund after he was allegedly found to be in possession of cocaine. Amini Sezerano (24) appeared in the town's magistrates court yesterday and was granted bail of N$2 000. The arrest of the Burundian national with cocaine follows only days after the arrest of Nigerian national who was detected by customs officials at the port of Walvis Bay International Airport with a stash of undeclared US Dollar bills. Fuel prices will drop by 50 cents a litre in Namibia at one-minute past midnight tomorrow, 5 July 2017. The pump prices at Walvis Bay will then be N$10,50 per litre for petrol and N$10,33 and N$10,38 respectively for 500ppm diesel and 50ppm diesel. The University of Namibia (UNAM) plans for the establishment of a Centre for Mining and Metallurgical Research and Training (CMMRT) and an Institute of Marine Engineering and Maritime Studies (MEMS) at the coast. Vor 83 Jahren starben Bonnie und Clyde in einer Polizeifalle. Sie brauchten nur zwei Jahre, um zur Legende zu werden. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Partner Clyde Champion Barrow überfiel Bonnie Parker Banken und Geschäfte. Das kriminelle Pärchen erschoss insgesamt 13 Menschen und fuhr wochenlang durch den Südwesten der USA, bevor die Polizei es stellen konnte. Auf ihrer Tour durch das Land stahlen Bonnie und Clyde immer wieder Autos, und somit nahm das FBI die Ermittlungen auf. Bonnie war 19 Jahre alt und bereits verheiratet, als sie Clyde im Januar 1930 in Texas das erste Mal traf. Bonnies Ehemann saß wegen Mordes im Gefängnis, glücklich war ihre Ehe nie. Sie und der zwei Jahre ältere Clyde wurden sofort ein Paar doch auch ihr neuer Liebhaber landete wegen Raubüberfällen hinter Gittern. Bonnie schmuggelte eine Pistole ins Gefängnis, mit der sich Clyde seinen Weg in die Freiheit erzwang. Doch Polizis-ten fingen den Ausbre-cher eine Woche später wieder ein. Erst 1932 kam er frei, Bonnie hatte auf ihn gewartet. Die beiden lebten außerhalb der Gesellschaft als vogelfreie Diebe und Räuber. Sie schlossen sich im März 1933 mit ihrem Be-

Dort endete ihre wilde Flucht in den frühen Morgenstunden des 23. Mai. Ein Bekannter von Bonnie und Clyde täuschte eine Wagenpanne vor und versperrte mit seinem Auto den Weg. Polizisten aus mehreren Bundesstaaten lauerten in Gebüschen am Straßenrand. Das Gaunerpärchen erkannte den Bekannten und hielt an. Der Lockvogel sprang in Deckung und die Polzisten eröffneten das Feuer. Bonnie und Clyde starben in ihrem Ford. Liebe Küstenleser! Die Erdoberfläche ist zu über 70 Prozent mit Wasser bedeckt. Das sind etwa 1,4 Milliarden Kubikkilometer Wasser. Süßwasser macht dabei nur einen kleinen Teil des gesamten Wasservolumens aus - nämlich nur 2,5 Prozent. Davon ist das meiste in Form von Eis oder Schnee in der Arktis und der Antarktis gebunden. Der Rest ist als Grundwasser unter der Erde gespeichert. Neben Binnenseen und Flüssen stellt es die wichtigste Süßwasserquelle für die Menschen dar. Doch das kostbare Gut wird knapp. Zwei Drittel der Erdbevölkerung werden im Jahr 2025 unter Wasserknappheit leiden, schätzen die Vereinten Nationen (UN). Eine wachsende Weltbevölkerung, der Klimawandel und die zunehmende Verschmutzung lassen sauberes Trinkwasser zunehmend zur Mangelware werden. Jeden Tag gelangen zwei Millionen Tonnen Abwasser und andere menschliche Abfälle in den Wasserkreislauf. Laut UN sterben jedes Jahr 3,5 Millionen Menschen wegen Wassermangel oder verschmutztem Trinkwasser. Die Lebensadern unseres Planeten sind bedroht - und mit ihnen die Ökosysteme, die an ihnen hängen. Unser arides Namibia ist selbstverständlich besonders betroffen. A total of 40 employees, working with food, attended this course. This course was organised by Mr. Dennis Gurirab, Health Inspector of the Municipality of Walvis Bay. Assisting with the arrangements was Mr. Dietrich Bessinger, the branch manager of Woermann Brock Kuisebmond. Mr. Gurirab confirmed this course will be conducted every year and he encourages other chain group stores to join this effort.

Introducing the all new Audi A5 & S5 Cabriolet Following the recent launch of the all-new Audi A5 Coupe and Sportback, the new Audi A5 Cabriolet has now been introduced to South Africa to complete the second generation of the A5 family. In the Audi S5 Cabriolet, a new sixcylinder turbocharged engine developing 260kW and 500 Nm of torque ensures top performance. The designers went with the precise, elegant lines of the CoupĂŠ for the shape of the new Audi A5 Cabriolet. The rear window is now flatter and emphasizes the sporty looks, as do the

short overhangs and the long wraparound hood with power dome. With a length of 4,673 millimetres, the new A5 Cabriolet is 47 millimetres longer than the predecessor model. Together with the wheelbase, which has been extended by 14 millimetres, and more compact seats, this means more space for the driver and passengers. Shoulder room in the front row of seats has been increased by 26 millimetres and knee room in the rear by 18 millimetres. The classic soft top fits perfectly into the athletic design and delivers outstanding aeroacoustics thanks to

effective insulation. The new one-touch opening function makes operating the standard acoustic hood much easier: A quick pull of the switch is all it takes to open the soft top fully automatically in 15 seconds or close it in 18 seconds - even while driving up to 50 km/h. With its sporty and agile handling, the A5 Cabriolet is impressively dynamic. The engineers increased the already high torsional stiffness of the previous model by 40 percent. The body is now the stiffest in its class. The total weight of the new generation has been reduced by up

to 40 kilograms. An updated five-link suspension is used on the front axle. At the rear, a five-link construction replaces the trapezoidal-link suspension used on the previous model. Adaptive dampers are available as an option and are incorporated into the standard Audi drive select dynamic handling system which allows the driver to choose between a highly dynamic or comfortable driving experience. The newly developed electromechanical power steering offers good feedback from the road and greater steering precision.

Optionally available is dynamic steering, which varies its gear ratio depending on the speed and steering angle. The engine lineup initially comprises two units - a 2.0 TFSI with 140kW and a 2.0T FSI with

185 kW. The former engine will only be offered in frontwheel drive, while the latter only with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Both engines however, will be offered in either a Base or Sport trim line.

A 2.0TDI engine will be available for the Southern African market at a later stage.

Flemming clears hurdle Walvisbaai en Kudus to Africa Youth Games Rugby Spanne speel 17 year-old Nadine Flemming at the weekend cleared the hurdle to qualification for the African Youth Games 2018 (AYG) and has also pocketed her certificate of capability, the pre-cursor for qualification for the Youth Olympic Games 2018 (YOG). With the only double clear in the first leg of the 2017 World Jumping Challenge held at Role Equestrian Centre at the weekend, Flemming and Seeis Eymet won the Category B event over 1.10/1.20m in impressive fashion. With her second mount, Seeis Shelton, Flemming also won the Category A Event over 1.20/1.30m with a total of only four jumping penalties ahead of seasoned equestrienne and previous winner of the World Jumping Challenge Michelle Künzle on Seeis Mon Gold (5 penalties) and Nicole Becker on HNSS Watani (12 penalties). Flemming is one of nine juniors in the age groups eligible for the AYG and the YOG receiving special training from South African Instructor Dianne Snodgrass-Botes under the auspices of the Namibian Equestrian Federation (NAMEF). Apart from Flemming, the cadre comprises of Pia Gebhardt, Sheena Dürr, Elisabeth Rossouw, Ramona Röschlau, Linda Freyer, Jessica Kreiner, Anike Maritz and Ariane Wieland. "Flemming's result and the excellent performance of the other eight youngsters, five of whom rode into the placings in category C and B of the World Jumping Challenge events this weekend shows we took the right decision in focussing on our youngsters, giving them a clear goal and thereby uplifting the whole of the showjumping sport," says an elated Gigi Mathias, NAMEF Secretary, adding that never before had there been such a strong turnout for the World Jumping Challenge classes. Slotting in behind Flemming in the Category B event were Annette Künzle on Seeis Elton (4 penalties), Michelle Künzle on Locarno di Caprio (4 penalties)

and on M&A's Caskari (8 penalties) and teenager Pia Gebhardt on Bastos Twahil (12 penalties). The category C event over 1.00/1.10m was won by Elisabeth Rossouw on Büllsport Constantin (4 penalties) ahead of Gesche Gilchrist on Seeis Dansuelo (6 penalties), Sylvia Kleyenstüber on Rathmor Waterford (8 penalties), Linda Freyer on Claratal Goldregen (8 penalties) and Ramona Röschlau on Two Boy (8 penalties). An excellent performance in the 1.00/1.10m events also came from 12 year-old Jayd Bassi-Hanssen on Assegai Scandal, who also finished on only four penalties, but is not eligible for competing in the World Jumping Challenge due to the age restriction of 14. Another highlight of the show organised by the Nubuamis Riding Club was the Six-Bar Competition on Sunday morning, which was won by Nicole Becker, her horse HNSS Watani – the small, feisty bay with the big heart – ultimately clearing 1.55m to the cheers of an excited crowd of spectators. Becker also had good results on her mare Zonjati Khaleesi with a first and a second in the 90 cm classes. Ariane Wieland and Kiara, Kayla de Wet on Seeis Mercury, MaikeSchommarz on SeeisMinsuelo, Camille Detavernier on Amaar Schatina and Dr. Beate Voigts on Voigtskirch. Salvano also shared in the 90cm spoils. Shining in the 80cm classes were Lara Pape on Amigo, Marlene Reisenauer on Seeis Miss Caprivi, Cilie Fourie on Bakgat Cabooze and Jenna Gilchrist on Arkab Knoffel. Newcomer Danae Geldenhuys on Ilina Silver Lady recorded a win and a second place in the 70cm class.

Kudus gaan môre alles in die stryd werp teen Wanderers, wanneer dié twee spanne mekaar in hul laaste ligawedstryde van die Premierliga die stryd aansê. Kudus gaan sy tuisveldvoordeel mildelik gebruik. Kudus het nou wel nie die paal na die semi-finaal gehaal nie, maar die span gaan alles in die stryd werp en wys dat die Kudus-gees nog lank nie geblus is nie. Wanderers het verlede naweek derde op die punteleer van die Premierliga gestaan en is saam met Unam, Western Suburbs en Walvisbaai Rugbyklub in die semi-finale. Walvisbaai Rugbyklub pak onoorwonne Unam môre op die rugbyveld van die Walvis Bay Private High School aan. Hoewel ‘n wen of ‘n verloor nie nou meer vir een van die spanne kritiek is nie, sal Unam graag sy skoon rekord vir die seisoen wil verdedig. Uit sy dertien wedstryde van die Premierliga vanjaar het Unam alles gewen. Hy is ook met 19 punte voor op die punteleer. Walvisbaai Rugbyklub sal na verwagting alles in die stryd werp om Unam darem net een keer met ‘n loesing huis-toe te stuur. So het die Premierliga tot nou vir die top 4 spanne verloop: 1. FNB Unam 1: 13 wedstryde gespeel. Al dertien gewen. Totaal van 73 drieë gedruk. Totaal van 25 drieë teen hul aangeteken. Totaal van 69 punte op die punteleer. 2.
