The interim phase of the Arandis Emergency Response and Traffic Management Centre (AERTMC) which controls the monitoring devices between Swakopmund and Usakos has kicked-off, the centre is now operational, and the CCTV cameras are working. The centre is located on a 4hectare piece of land at the entrance of Arandis. AERTMC will form the backbone of a traffic safety network along the B2 highway between Swakopmund and Usakos. This project is a government project co-owned by three institutions- the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), the Arandis Town Council (ATC) and Erongo Regional Council (ERC). The three partners have established the Arandis Emergency Response and Traffic Management Centre to introduce the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) technologies.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said Namibia's road safety performance has been of concern for both government and the road users through the years. This is on account of the hundreds of lives the country, despite the small population, continue to lose every year. According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, contemporary records show on average, Namibia loses about 700 lives per year, which translates into 27 lives per hundred thousand inhabitants. Being small in terms of demographics, this is a death toll the country and the economy cannot afford indefinitely. “The Arandis Emergency Response and Traffic Management Centre is indeed a flagship pro-
ject as it endeavours to infuse a new way of how driver sanity could be restored on our roads particularly the project coverage area. The Arandis Emergency Response and Traffic Management Centre is one of its kind in the country. It embraces the latest technology in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). It enables real-time 24/7 surveillance of the affected road section. The Centre's capability will not only enable timely response should something happen but will also enable adequate and appropriate response within the golden hour rule,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said. The Chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), Eliphas !Owos-ôab said this day stands out as an indelible milestone in the country's road safety history for one good reason, reason being this initiative is different and innovative in the Namibian context being the very first of its kind. According to !Owos-oâb the Interim Centre's costs amounted to N$27 650 000 (inclusive of Professional fees for the Consultants; Office furniture; one-year operational costs; potable temporary structure; all the roadside equipment; militarygrade communications network; three VMS (mobile, tactical and static); Computer infrastructure (both hard and software); security cameras; air conditioners, and the rest of other equipment. The total estimated cost of covering the entire road from Usakos to Swakopmund and the construction of a fully-fledged centre is estimated at N$185 200 000. AERTMC presents a novel, extensible multi-camera video surveillance system which supports the detection, tracking and classification of objects moving within the supervised area and can be applied in a broad field of applications in the future. Primarily, the system seeks to monitor the conditions of driver behaviour and vehicle movement, real-time.

The festive season public education campaign was launched on Friday, 3 December at the Swakopmund roadblock. The campaign aims to create awareness on road safety on the B2 Highway for the festive season. The public education campaign runs until 15 January 2022. According to Ambrosius Tierspoor, the Head of Communications at the National Road Safety Council of Namibia, the greatest stretches of problem roads on the B2 highway is from Okahandja to Swakopmund and on the B1 road from Noordoewer to Otavi. “These two highways take almost 52% of lives in terms of road fatalities, so we create awareness specifically on these two highways because that is where the problem is. The reason why we start in Swakopmund is because the whole country travel to the coast during the festive season and from all the roads come and merge either at Karibib, Okahandja and all the way to the coast.” Tierspoor said their main objectives is to save lives, to reduce the number of fatalities through their public education campaigns. “If you want to arrive alive just follow the road rules, if it says 120 kilometres then keep to the 120. There is a reason why engineers have recommended a 120 kilometre per hour on our national roads, if you go above that, there is a possibility that either your tyre will burst, or you will lose control or if there is a situation ahead on the road you might not be able to control the vehicle. Our target for the next ten years is to reduce death and injury by 50%”, Tierspoor concluded. Motorists receive a brochure containing some road safety tips when arriving at the roadblock.
CCTV cameras It facilitates communication between the road user and the control room at AERTMC through the CCTV camera poles using solar power, the variable message signs (VMS), which includes the tactical VMS and the speed VMS on a close circuit television along the route. This high-tech device can weigh vehicles on the move and displays electronic information signs that warns motorists on traffic hazards ahead. The centre will also be the support for first responders to accident scenes and to transport the injured to medical facilities within shorter response time. In two of the VMS sites, automatic number plates recognition cameras with the ability to read number plates and type of vehicle. It also does vehicle counting. During a media site visit last week, the Chief Executive Officer of Arandis, Stanley Norris said, “when you see this centre know that it is the first of its kind in Namibia and some of the technology is on the level that is even surpassing South African technology. So please understand that it is the first layer of protection to protect for the loss of life incidence and record and control and monitor.” All the CCTV cameras' feeds from the road are seen at the centre and information from all the devices on the road are also seen from the control room at the centre, so whatever happens on the road, the operator at the centre picks it up. According to Bazil Calogero, the Operator Manager of the Centre, the operators can post messages on VMS monitors and warn motorists of anything upstream that can be dangerous or that may cause a delay on the way. The VMS also displays the speed at which a vehicle is travelling and if a driver exceeds the speed limit, the VMS will tell a driver to slow down. Calogero said if there is anything happening on the road, the operators will notify the relevant authorities to go out. They will also monitor the progress of the incidence and if there is a communication line with the people on the site, then they can supply more information.

“The benefit of the system is that a traffic officer on the site can only see what is in front of him, with the system, we have a better idea of the whole network, so we can provide that information on the incident”, said Calogero. According to Calogero, currently the appointment of the system is around the Arandis area, based on hotspots incidents that they have gathered previously. The network is covering from the Arandis Airport turn-off on the B2 highway, and it runs to about 7 kilometres outside of Arandis towards Usakos. “The other poles we are looking at appointing during the next round of equipment. The next round we are looking at will be 10 kilometres outside Arandis towards Usakos and will run up all the way just before Usakos, that is the next phase,” adds Calogero. Norris said the data that the centre picks up is very important because it determines the behaviour of a driver and stores information of repeat offenders. If you transgress the law, your information will be recorded, and the data will be stored. If you repeat your actions, relevant officials will be notified that you are a problematic driver and actions can be taken against you before lives are lost because of your driving. The centre currently consists of a boardroom, operation manager's office, the server room, operations room, two kitchen and toilet units and a storage room. Eugene Tendekule, the Executive Secretary of the National Road Safety Council said when the final centre is constructed and done, it will have a video wall which the police will have access to. Tendekule further said: “The phase we are having now, we are calling it the interim phase because we wanted the project to start functioning so we can collect data which we will then use to motivate the next phase. Ideally we want construction of the big centre to start in the next financial year and should finish in two years' time”.

NovaNam invests N$320 million in deep-sea trawlers Rudi Bowe
NovaNam, the community of Lüderitz and its stakeholders celebrated another milestone as they inaugurated two brand new deep-sea trawlers. The trawlers were acquired at the cost of N$ 320 million. MFV NovaNam One and MFV NovaNam Two are the second and third brand-new deep-sea fishing trawlers inaugurated at the Port of Lüderitz since Independence. The first vessel, MFV Lalandii1 was inaugurated in 2020. This investment is part of NovaNam's strategic investment plan, wherein NovaNam committed to a fleet investment programme of N$ 480 million for three brand-new built vessels between 2019 and 2021. The purpose of the vessels is to feed its value-addition factory at Lüderitz where 1500 processing staff members of NovaNam pack for the globally renowned seafood brand of the Nueva Pescanova Group. The construction of these new fishing vessels has at all times kept true to the crucial aspect of sustainability and has
kept true to the four pillars of the NovaNam strategy in terms of its Corporate Social Responsibility. These pillars are People, Planet, Product, and Communities. The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Honourable Derek Klazen, said with these new vessel investments in Lüderitz, NovaNam will be contributing towards the Food and Agricultural Organisation's Blue Growth initiative as well as the Blue Economy in building and sustaining a vibrant coastal community in this part of the world. Klazen said, “It is therefore in great appreciation of the reliance of this town on fishing that I believe we will soon see a notable improving in the social, economic and environmental benefits for this community given its dependence on fisheries.”

Mayor of Swakopmund officially opens extended beach walkway Sharlien Tjambari
The Mayor of Swakopmund, Her Worship Cllr Louisa Kativa on behalf of the Swakopmund Town Council officially opened the extended beach walkway at the northern beach area across the Wurstbude restaurant in Vineta, to the public on Wednesday, 1 December. The now four meter wide, 8 km walkway was extended by one kilometer and stretches from the Swakopmund Aquarium to Platz am Meer. The walkway is open to cyclists and strollers. According to the Mayor of Swakopmund, the walkway extension project began in November 2020 and came to completion in July this year, with the aim of extending the then existing ending point, up to the Platz am Meer shopping mall. Cllr Kativa said, this also meant widening this 1.3 kilometer existing walkway from two to four metres, which was done in the months of August and October this year. “Modifications were made to accommodate a future planned restaurant. This was done between 1 to 28 November, and ensured for a 4m wide, 380m long modified walkway,” said Cllr Kativa.

The ceremony also covered the launch of the management plans for Skeleton Coast Park, Dorob National Park and Namib Naukluft Park and paves the way for the construction of staff houses, park management offices, tourism receptions and tourism entrance gates for the Cape Cross Seal Reserve in the Erongo Region, Skeleton Coast Park in the Kunene Region and Namib Naukluft Park in the Erongo, Hardap and Karas Regions. The Minster of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, said infrastructure development at Cape Cross in the Cape Cross Seal Reserve; Ugabmund, Springbokwasser and Mowe Bay in the Skeleton Coast Park; as well as Sesriem and Gobabeb in the Namib Naukluft Park will improve the management of national parks and service delivery. Shifeta said, “The new infrastructure will include new park entrance gates and signage walls, new offices, tourism receptions, vehicle garages and maintenance workshops, staff houses, service buildings with equipment stores, service pits and wash bays, and ablution blocks.” According to the minister the coastal parks, Cape Cross, Skeleton Coast, Dorob and Namib Naukluft Park are part of what has become one of the longest protected coastlines in the world, stretching from the Iona National Park in south-western Angola and bordering the Skeleton Coast Park to the Ramsar Site at the Orange River. “With signing of the agreement for establishment of the Iona-Skeleton Coast Trans-frontier Park between Namibia and Angola, there is an opportunity to establish a much larger Trans-frontier Conservation Area that spans three countries - Namibia, Angola and South Africa along the Namib coast,” the minister said, explaining NamParks 5, which is the current phase, covers the four Namibian Coastal Parks that comprise of the Skeleton Coast Park, the Dorob National Park with Cape Cross Seal Reserve, the Namib Naukluft Park as well as the Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park. These Coastal Parks, with their linkage with the trans-frontier conservation areas in the north with Angola and in the south with South Africa, and further linkages with numerous concessions, conservancies and private conservation areas, offer an exceptional conservation and tourism opportunities. The parks are managed for wildlife, biodiversity conservation and tourism for economic development of the country and improved livelihoods of the people. Through the Namibia - German cooperation continued investment in new infrastructure development for National Parks are ensured. Minister Shifeta said that the management plans make provision for tourism development and management. The environment minister expressed gratitude to the German Government's continued friendship and generous support. “You have become a “Friend of our Parks.

The Dome in Swakopmund changed its name from The Dome High Performance Centre to MTC The Dome Namibia after they partnered up with the Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC). The partnership was revealed on 3 December this year. The Chief Executive Officer of the Dome, Fanus Engelbrecht said MTC demonstrated its passion for sports by contributing a significant amount of money into the development of sport. “We have everything to take athletes, nurture their talent and create future champions that will have a huge impact on nation building and will inspire the nation”. The centre is meant to provide intense high-level training for Namibian athletes to better prepare them for competitions. Athletes no longer need to go abroad to prepare for competitions and the centre will be a regional hub that is accessible to international athletes and teams. Engelbrecht said, “a lot of good things will happen here, not only for sports, but also for tourism, so we really are a one stop facility, we are also an events destination.” Engelbrecht's wish is for this partnership to help them in their efforts to unlock true potential. “This partnership is connecting us to a very blue and bright future.” MTC's Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affair's Officer, Tim Ekandjo said the venue has hosted various MTC events, including the Namibian Annual Media Awards (NAMAs) for close to five years. According to Ekandjo, the partnership is not only about sports, but nation-building, which can only mean better things for Namibian athletes. “We need to instil a culture of preparation and building of infrastructure. We expect results but need to prepare before an event starts. It simply does not happen just like that, because whoever you compete against has already prepared in advance. Do Mar Fishing – Experienced fish trader Rudi Bowe
Do Mar Fishing, is a company that has more than 15 years' specialised experience in the logistics of fish in and around Namibia and the SADC regions. Young entrepreneur and owner of the fishing company, Antonio Rodriques started as a fish trader in Angola in 2005. The economycollapse in Angola forced Rodriques to look for greener pastures in Namibia. Rodriques started the very successful Do Mar Fishing, a company that focuses on the proces-
sing, sales and logistics of the final fish product from Walvis Bay to different regions in the SADC, in 2017. The company grew to 12 employees over the last five years. With the increase in demand in the market, the company has its eyes set on growing its staff to about 200 employees in the next 5 years. “Growth is one thing, stagnation is
another. In order to grow, we need the support of the Namibian Government, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and other fishing companies in the sector.” R o d r i q u e s a rg u e s numerous fishing companies do not yet see the solution of the high unemployment rate of Namibia actually lies in the support and empower-
ment of traders. Fish traders like Do Mar Fishing will be able to grow exponentially if supported by fishing companies, which will allow trading companies to employ more people. Rodriques finds the purchase of quotas through auction very tough as this minimises their chances to trade, because of the fact traders have to
compete against the government and big fishing companies in the sector, questioning the government allowing other countries to benefit from Namibian recourses which create jobs inside these countries while Namibia's unemployment rate increases on a daily basis. Rodriques said, “it is in my opinion where there is a decision to be
made in the fishing industry, everyone in the industry should be able to give input, rather than the decision-making only be left for the government.” Do Mar Fishing stands by the Harambe prospect, “No child should be left behind”. Rodriques believes in the empowerment of woman and giving back to the Namibian

P.S.S. Online Primary School expand subjects P.S.S. Online Primary School expands their subject offerings for 2022. After a successful year opening an online leg for internet-based schooling, Private School Swakopmund Online Primary has decided to expand their curriculum for 2022 by including two languages, Afrikaans and German. Hein Daiber, Director of the school, said, “We introduced online schooling during the COVID crisis, and some parents decided to keep their students online even after we went back to face to face. For that we added an online section to our school at the beginning of this year.” There are diverse reasons why parents go the online route. Some kids do not function well in a classroom situation, some students live on farms. You also get professional athletes, doing their schooling online as it gives them the freedom to travel and train in a flexible manner and without being bound to a classroom. PSS Online Primary's Head, Vaida van der Merwe, says, “Our students get the advantage of being part of a group yet can study from anywhere. A big attraction is that the teacher communicates with the students during live class sessions. It means that students have a virtual classroom which is live and in real time. These live classroom sessions set PSS Online apart from other home school systems. Another great success this year was the virtual social hang outs. For example, we
did a 'bake off' with the Grade 4-6s. It's not a matter of students vegetating in front of a computer. We keep them engaged and involved, whilst being part of a group! “Integrating the Cambridge system with the vast number of internet resources is a phenomenal advantage. During class you can show a video of a concept you are teaching. You also get to see in real time what the students are writing. Face to face teaching usually involves the student handing in his work, the teacher marks it and then the student gets feedback. “During our live classroom tutoring sessions, the teacher can ask a student to, for example, do a Math problem on the white board and as he is doing it, you can advise him. It's like asking the student to come to the white board and do a sum in a traditional classroom. This is online, but the concept is the same.” Says Mrs van der Merwe, “Providing the Cambridge International curriculum for the primary student, our focus is on active learning and making sure the student can constructively build on that knowledge and can experience it firsthand, and applying it in their local area. We are also focusing on Namibia and comparing it with other countries. If we talk about building the foundation, we are trying to build effective communication around mathematical and science skills, including practical skills which students then use to understand the concepts.”

The SupaSupatronix Squash Doubles league came to an end with the final round at the Buccaneers Squash Club in Walvis Bay. Thanks to Jose de Brito and Supatronix for the sponsorship of this Supa popular event. To put into perspective how much squash was played, a total of 153 matches was played over the short span of 7 weeks, which might be added is not too shabby and proves how popular doubles is. Well played to all. Ms Elizabeth de Brito who presented the prizes on behalf of Supatronix was excited to announce that Supatronix would again sponsor the event next year. NCS breaks the norm Rudi Bowe The men's Namibia Correctional Services (NCS) Volleyball Club Ondangwa broke the norm and Revivals Volleyball Club retained their championship status in the female category at the final round of the Bank Windhoek Namibian Volleyball Federation Cup 2021, hosted at the Jan Wilken Indoor Sports Complex in Walvis Bay over the past weekend.

The Ondangwa-based NCS Volleyball Club faced NDF in the Bank Windhoek NVF Cup final in the men's category. NDF fought and took a set in the match; however, NCS stood its ground and won the game by delivering powerful attacks consistently when it matters the most. The final score was three sets to one in favour of NCS. Revival Volleyball Club, in the women's category, dominated the tournament and established their reputation as defending champions. Revivals faced their nemesis Kudos in the Bank Windhoek NVF Cup final and thrashed Kudos three sets to nil to reclaim their throne. The victories for both teams mean that they have qualified to the Zone Six Club Championship in Mozambique next year. From the onset, 16 teams from the Oshana, Khomas, Kavango East, Zambezi, and the Erongo, were all on top of their game as they came out ready to claim the ultimate trophy. With an intense rivalry, the quarterfinal games kicked off Friday evening. The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) women's team played against their colleagues from the NAVY in the second quarter-final match. However, NDF established its dominance and secured its spot in the semi-Final. Kudos Volleyball Club and NDF met in a thrilling semi-final match in the men's category. Kudos took the first two sets of the encounter, NDF however, took it a level higher and fought back to win the thrilling semi-final three sets to two. The Bank Windhoek NVF Cup 2021 started with a street march through the streets of Walvis Bay under the escort of the Municipal Traffic Department. The Erongo region Governor Neville Andre and Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes declared the Bank Windhoek NVF Cup opened. Themed, Volleyball against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Chief Inspector Selma Shalunga from the Namibian Police addressed the athletes' importance of fighting GBV at various levels. She encouraged them to take it upon themselves to become ambassadors against GBV in their respective communities. NVF President, Hillary Imbuwa, said it was exciting to witness NCS' win. He shared that since the history of their major tournaments, over the past 12 years, teams from the Khomas region have dominated volleyball. Imbuwa noted that NCS' win demonstrates that the sport has grown. “We will continue to search for talent to grow volleyball in Namibia,” said Imbuwa. The final results are as follow: Women: Men: 1. Namibian Matheus 'The Beast' Heita captured the WBA Pan Africa super bantamweight title after his opponent Tinashe Mwadziwana of Zimbabwe retired at the start of the sixth round last Saturday 4 December at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay. Heita said, “I was under no pressure and had the fight under control as from the first round. The Pan African Super Bantamweight champion says his latest victory wills open doors for him with bigger things to follow. The Beast thanked everyone who came to watch him fighting at home. “I prepared well for this fight because I knew it was important for me to win in view of the fact that it will open doors for me,” Nestor 'Sunshine' Tobias was pleased to have hosted a successful night of boxing, which saw most of his boxers emerging victorious in a cold Kuisebmond weather. Tobias said, “It was a great night because the boxers displayed quality through the night, which makes me happy as promoter. I am happy that Heita won and the sky can is the limit for him because he is a talented young boy.” Martin Mukungu defeats Immanuel Jason with a 10th round TKO to claiming the National
Featherweight title. Phillipus Shaanika and Joseph Abel's National Super Bantamweight bout ended in a draw. Walvis Bay's Max Ipinge recorded a win with a unanimous decision over Zimbabwe's Tinashe Zihove. Lazarus Namalambo became the new National Bantamweight champion with victory over Andreas Mwenyo over 10 rounds. Natanael Sebastiunus lost his Featherweight nontitle comeback fight against Botswana's Steven Bagwasi. In the flyweight category Debutant Erastus Shapaka was handed a baptism of fire by Festus Simeon who won the fight by a unanimous decision. Featherweight Fredrick Ngutenyane beat Johannes Morsande by a unanimous decision. Lineekela Ngifindika defeats Gerson Alweendo to claim a win in the Junior Lightweight bout.Elson Kalus defeat Rafael Iitaa unanimous decision. Nestor Thomas also made easy work of Antoni Moses. Last weekend we had an old sponsor BEST DRIVE sponsor the individual stableford competition at the club with a host of players on 32 point so the count out was applied and it was. The players were required to play off the red tees and to most this was a new experience and from the scores it looked like a new course. It was only Christo Muller and Amandiho Sardinha who were able to card a flat round of 36 points and winning the day on a count out was Christo. Amandiho was second and third place went to the only lady in the field, Wilma de Wet on 33 points and Wynand Moller fourth. The winners of the lucky draws were Wouter van Wijk and Wayne Hart. There was no nearest to the pin on number eleven so Tiennie de Wet won the lucky draw for that prize. Deville Dreyer won closest to the pin of number 7. Queen's Baton to hit the coast Rudi Bowe
The Queen's Relay Baton departed from Buckingham Palace on 7 October, and will travel for 294 days, connecting 72 communities in every corner of the Commonwealth, and hit ground in Walvis Bay for the first time on 13 December. As a Commonwealth Nation, the Namibian coastal towns, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund will be hosting the Queen's Baton Relay from 13 to 15 December 2021.“This is an historic event as the Queen's Relay Baton has never been on our shores and as the towns of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund will be participating in the Queen's Baton Relay, there will be numerous dignitaries, international athletes of various sport codes as well as members of the Namibian government and community members participating in the relay through the streets of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Trevino Forbes,said that the Queen's Baton Relay is a unique tradition of the Games that unites the more than two billion citizens of the Commonwealth in a celebration of sport, diversity, and peace. Forbes said, “I hope that the Baton will symbolically connect the people of Walvis Bay and highlight the beauty and tourism oppor-tunities that we have to offer, as it makes its way through our town. I urge all residents to part take in the numerous events and activities that are organized during the baton's three day stay at the coast.” The Queen's Baton Relay is a global event hosted prior to the commencement of the Commonwealth Games. The Baton is known to carry a message from Queen Elizabeth ll, who is currently the Head of Commonwealth. The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games, is an International multi-sports event for members of the commonwealth. The Games are expected to take place between 28 July and 8 August 2022 in Birmingham. The Queen's Baton Relay braces distinctiveness in
humanity as well as to bring people together. It symbolises the intention that every individual has distinctive living experiences that are threaded and woven together into a tapestry of cultures. The Baton will arrive in Walvis Bay on 13 December 2021 with the official relay to start at 07:30 on 14 December, from the Topnaar Community to Dune 7. The Baton will arrive in Narraville with an event at 10:30 at the Narraville Community Hall. The Baton will then proceed to Kuisebmund with an event at 11:30 at the Kuisebmond Sports Field. The Baton will proceed to Namdockfor a small event at 12:30. The final leg will be to the Walvis Bay Municipal Civic Centre where will be handed to the Mayor of Walvis Bay at 15:00. The day's proceedings will end with various activities at 18:00 at the Civic Centre in the harbor town. The following day 15 December the relay will resume at 07:30 from the Civic Centre via the Lagoon to Namport for a small relay in the port area with Beatrice Mashilenga and Christine Mboma before it will go on a the sea with Tug Boat and canoe rower, Maike Diekmann and open sea water swimmer, Philip Siedler to Langstrand. The Baton will be at Langstrand at 11:00 and after a gathering it will be carried with a Fat Bicycle, Quad Bike and Camels to the Swakopmund Bridge. At 11h45 the Relay continues through Swakopmund, passing Lions Old Age Home, Main Street, Flash -mop in Main Street, Jetty, Mole and Crystal Gallery to the MTC Dome. At 13h00 Flash Mob and Omaruru Cultural group performance in front of the MTC Dome and at 14:00 an official handover ceremony of the Queen's Baton will be held at the MTC Dome and at 19h00 Carols by Candlelight by the Mascoto Youth Choir and Kings Choir at the MTC Dome. The communities of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund are invited to invade the streets of the town in their masses and in their diversities to come and support the Queen's Baton Relay.

The ROTAX MAX final Rudi Bowe The final leg of the ROTAX MAX challenge recently at the Swakopmund Go-Kart track served up some great action and tightly contests. The National final saw 29 drivers participating in six different categories that comprised the Bambino's, Junior Max, Senior Max, Terino, DD2 and DD2 masters. The organiser of the ROTAX MAX national challenge Jörg Goldbeck said there is a lot of potential among the youth in the sport. “There are definitely some famous rally drivers rising amongst the upcoming go kart racers.” Eight Namibian drivers with their Karts recently participated in different categories at the ROTAX MAX South African Open challenge. “This was a great event and good opportunity for the Namibian racers. We may have gotten a beating from South Africa, but we also learned a lot. The improvements we experienced on lap times were amazing. We are going again next year, so we will fight from the back and see what happens.” In addition to receiving trophies, all the respective champions received free tickets to the African Open next year as well as a set of new tyres,” Goldbeck said. There is a Kart Store race scheduled for December in Swakopmund, with international competitors invited. “We have seven Angolan drivers, as well as entrants from South Africa who are ready to compete, but they are all unsure about what is going to happen next in terms of our borders. Everything is in place, but now we need to wait and see. We are happy with the level of racing and are trying to improve every year. We are doing very well in terms of lap times, speed, and discipline and driving skills.” Goldbeck said that they would like to grow the sport. “We want to start at an early age and thus develop the sport.” We hope to keep the guys in karting, but some will branch out to drag or circuit racing or rally. Motorsport has a lot of potential, but it needs some structure. The long-term aim is definitely to get our guys to the world finals.” Championship winners each received a ticket to participate in the ROTAX MAX South African Open challenge in June 2022.
