First road Record delivery deaths Eileen van der Schyff Hopes for an accident-free festive holiday season are shattered. A mother and her two-year-old son died in a gruesome accident on Tuesday on the B2 between Usakos and Arandis. A black GTi Golf overtook another vehicle on a blind crest and slammed head-on into a Toyota pickup. The force of the collision tore the Golf in two. The pick-up was also left a writeoff. The two-year-old, King Lion Schiefer, died on the scene. The deceased boy's mother, 30year-old Leonie Camm died upon arrival at the hospital. The driver of the Golf was identified as Leon Schiefer (43) who is the deceased boy's father. Another passenger in the Golf was only slightly injured and was identified as 15-

Floris Steenkamp A record-setting 12-tons of the refrigerant ammonia arrived in Walvis Bay by ISO container on Wednesday. The ammonia is the single biggest consignment ever to be shipped to Namibia and is needed to complete the 600 tons fish freezing facility of Seaflower Pelagic Processing (Pty) Ltd in the harbour town. Once completed, the freezing plant will be the biggest facility of its kind in West Africa. Hence, many ele-
ments of its construction also record breakers in their own right. The refrigeration component of the freezing
plant is jointly constructed by Pam Refrigeration Walvis Bay, Amco Electric and Afritech Engineering.

Seaflower Pelagic Processing, which is a joint venture between Seaflower and local investors, expects to come into production in the first quarter of 2019. Apart from the massive freezer plant, the company also boasts a 300 tons fishmeal plant and a 6-line cannery. Seaflower Pelagic Processing is situated on the premises in Ben Amathila Avenue of the former Etale Fishing. The company only in its freezer plant expects to employ some 400 people. The cannery will for now only can horse mackerel, but is geared to handle any pelagic fish species.

Vehicle assembly plant at Walvis Bay:
Gearing for massive 2020 target Floris Steenkamp
The next batch of components of 71 Peugeot and Opel vehicles are under shipment from France to Namibia, ready for assembly at the newly inaugurated Peugeot-Opel Assembly Plant (POAN) at Walvis Bay. The plant is owned and operated by the French Groupe PSI, a global player in the vehicle manufacturing trade which in 2018 alone saw an 8 % growth in its worldwide sale of vehicles (it sold 2,2 million vehicles in 2018). POAN, which is situated in the new industrial area of Walvis Bay, already in its first weeks of operation assembled 15 vehicles. The 71 vehicles' components are now at sea as containerised cargo, shipped from the port of Dunkirk in France and are landed at the port of Walvis Bay. These shipments are to become regular practise, as POAN gears to assemble 5 000 vehicles in Walvis Bay by 2020. All vehicles destined for the new vehicle market in the countries
making up the Southern African Customs Union (SACU): Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland. Production at POAN will be expanded in a staggered formation, with assembly capacity and employment gradually increased towards target 2020, it was explained on the side lines at the plant's inauguration by President Hage Geingob on Wednesday. On a question by Namib Times, as to how these masses of vehicles will be distributed to the markets, it was explained that existing logistics channels of the new vehicle trade between South Africa and Namibia will be utilised. South Africa currently dominates the new vehicle distribution network in SACU with vehicle carrying trucks fanning out from this southern-
most neighbour into SACU. These vehicle carriers return empty to South Africa, hence POAN's production outputs would optimise the capacity of these vehicle carriers. ¡A question that could not be answered was whether the new units, destined for dealerships in Namibia, will first be exported to South Africa and then re-imported into the country. By the very nature of the vehicle manufacturingand trade industries are secretive on their activities, as competition is fierce. Hence, it was explained, the limited information flow during the months the assembly plant was set-up in Walvis Bay, and also the limited information on the practical arrangements of how the vehicles would be distributed into the Namibia new vehicle trade.

A shocking number of 860 cases of the Hepatitis E virus is currently reported in Swakopmund since the outbreak which was confirmed in June this year. To control this outbreak the World Health Organisation (WHO) has come on board to support the Swakopmund Municipality. The World Health Organisation (WHO) would like to support the community of

Swakopmund to fight the spread of Hepatatis E through conducting a Risk Communication/Social Mobilisation/Community Engagement Intervention towards the control of Hepatitis E. On Tuesday this week, the Mayor of Swakopmund Pauline Nashilundo and WHO Representative in Namibia Dr Charles Sagoe-Moses, signed a ceremonial agreement and launched the Risk Communication Project at the DRC Informal Settlement, which is the area mostly affected by the virus. Standing in for the Director of the Ministry of Health and Social Services Amir Shaker, Barbara Van Rooyen confirmed that Erongo Region has a total of 900 Hepatitis E cases, four lives lost: two in Swakopmund, one in Walvis Bay and one in Omaruru and two of these cases were maternal deaths. Dr Sagoe-Moses highlighted that a comprehensive, systematic and sustained community engagement plan is critical if this outbreak is to be curbed. “Messages on handwashing and other hygiene promotion activities at household and individual levels through community health volunteers and community leaders cannot be overemphasised to ensure behavioural change in hygiene practices”. According to Sagoe-Moses, the WHO has committed close to N$3 million to support the Ministry of Health and Social Services intensify their response. As part of that support, approximately N$260 000 will be given to the Municipality of Swakopmund for an integrated community-based response through community volunteers.
These volunteers are expected to conduct community surveillance, contact tracing and hygiene promotion at household levels with emphasis on handwashing in the DRC settlement for at least six months. It is believed that the municipality will work very closely with the ministry's district and regional health teams to support and supervise the volunteers. “We hope that this support will enable the Swakopmund Municipality and the Ministry of Health and Social Services intensify their response to the Hepatitis E outreak and reduce the number of new cases in Swakopmund”, added Sagoe-Moses. He further said the Swakopmund community should not turn a blindeye on this outbreak and thing it is only the DRC informal settlement which is affected, this virus will affect anyone in Swakopund who does not practice safe hygiene. “We have people living in DRC, who are employed in our homes, restaurants, hotels and who baby-sit our children. We must not think this is a problem of DRC alone. We must always wash our hands . Hepatitis E is a viral infection of the liver that is caused by Hepatitis E virus (HEV), it is characterised by yellow eyes, dark urine, vomiting and body weakness. The incubation period of Hepatitis E varies from 2-10 week, with most cases occurring 4-6 weeks after exposure and is transmitted through faecal-oral route, hence it's likely to affect the population who lack access to proper sanitation facilities. Handwashing is crucial, with running water and soap.

Those who are fortunate enough to be coastal residents have already started to make most of the long, sunny days, as this group who decided on Wednesday to ride their wave blasters off the Walvis Bay Yacht Club. It is expected the influx of visitors will commence next week, as most of the service delivers in Namibia opt every year to close shop around mid-December. The Walvis Bay Corridor’s Record Increases In Cross Border MEDIA RELEASE Cargo Volumes The cargo volumes along the Walvis Bay Corridors have steadily increased in 2018. As at October 2018, 590 000 tonnes of cargo destined for our neighbouring countries were recorded. This equates to an increase of 19.8% for cross border cargo moving through the Port of Walvis Bay. It is expected that the final volumes along the corridors should close the year off at an estimated 36% higher than 2017. The growth in cargo volumes was driven by the Walvis BayNdola-Lubumbashi Development Corridor (WBNLDC), specifically destined for the Zambian and DRC markets which achieved an impressive 46,000 tonnes average per month. Volumes destined for the Zimbabwe market has similarly grown by 48% with mainly break-bulk being transported through the Port of Walvis Bay. Although markets such as Zimbabwe, Zambia and the DRC have experienced stronger growth than other markets, the Angolan market has seen a slower growth. Interest in the Angolan market is however slowly on the upturn. “Our increase in volumes, once again, reaffirms that the Walvis Bay Corridors is becoming the preferred trade route, when it comes to importing and exporting through the
port of Walvis Bay, to and from southern Africa,” said WBCG Acting CEO, Clive Smith. “The record increase in these volumes is testimony to the success of our efforts to increase accessibility to our markets via the Walvis Bay Corridors.” The Walvis Bay Corridors is unquestionably growing as an alternative trade route for international markets to and from southern Africa with various commodities moved via the Port of Walvis Bay. Key commodities transiting on the routes include copper, vehicles, frozen products, machinery & equipment and consumables, amongst others. This growth is testament to the competitive offering via Walvis Bay pertaining to reduced time, high reliability and security as well as efficiencies achieved along our Corridors. In a recent survey on the Ports servicing the region conducted by a South African based publication, Freight & Trading Weekly, the Port of Walvis Bay tied for first position along side the Port of Durban as the preferred Port to use for moving cargo into and out of the region. Other ports included in the study are the ports of Beira, Cape Town, Dar es Salaam and Maputo. The study has affirmed the Walvis Bay Corridors as a prominent alternative for importers and exporters in the region and clearly implies a more efficient and effective service position using Walvis Bay, which offers a tremendous reduction in transit times.

We catch up on the life of the coast's “820 grams miracle” On Tuesday 13 June 2000 a baby was born at Swakopmund's Cottage Private Hospital (today known as the Cottage MediClinic). Babies are born every day, so what is so special about the birth of this particular baby? The answer to this question lies in the edition of namib times, 23 June 2000: the baby weighed only 820g and was the tiniest ever born at the coast. What makes this more of a miracle is the fact that this tiny baby survived against all the odds and grew into a strong young man. The baby was delivered by Dr Matti Kimberg, a well-known gynaecologist. Gangan was the first ever wonder baby to be born at the Coast. Gangan was born at six months and kept in an incubator for close to one month before his parents, Lisema Alma Gomachas and Robert Gomachab, could take their little wonder bundle home. “We never had the opportunity to hold him in our hands on the day of his birth. I had to wait for three months to hold him in my hands, because he was very, very tiny. Premature babies face many complications, but they are strong and natural survivors. Robert Gomachab described his son's upbringing as normal one. Apart from the first months after his premature birth, the rest of his upbringing was uncomplicated. Gangan had no further health-related issues, explained his father. namib times also contacted Dr Kimberg who instantly recalled this special birth. He also expressed his wish to meet Gangan at some point in time. “In 2000 at the Cottage hospital the survival of Gangan was a major achievement for us. It was a wonderful team effort. It is exactly why I still carry out obstetrics (deliver babies) at my age, as I cannot stop to marvel at the wonders of life when I hold a new born in my hands”, said Dr Kimberg who several years ago relocated to Windhoek. Adding, babies born with a disability or fighting to survive prematurity need extra love and affection from both parents. “I would love to see Gangan again, give him a big hug and talk about his plans and his life. A window opened to me in my childhood (age 12 at the time) that probably determined my course in life”. “My parents were missionaries in the then Natal, at a mission hospital called Ekupumuleni. Circumstances allowed me to see a birth in a Zulu kraal delivered by a nurse/midwife. I wasn't supposed to look, but how do you tell that to a 12-year-old? I have never lost that sense of wonder”, concluded Kimberg. Gangan was told the story of his birth and he was shown photographs, but he couldn't believe it was him. “I kept on saying it wasn't true and that was a “gogga” and not me. It never had any negative impact on me. I am excited actually every time I am told the story, said Gangan during the recent interview. Gangan's was raised in Swakopmund and started his first grade at Swakopmund Primary School (SPS). He attended at SPS up to Grade 7. The family then moved to Keetmanshoop where he continues with his secondary education. He has 6 siblings and says once he completes his school career, he would like to pursue studies in the field of Mining Engineering. He too looks forward to meeting Dr Kimberg. An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Der Caprivi ist eine Reise wert! Unsere heiligsten Kühe von Herbert Schier Gleich nach der Einfahrt in das fruchtbare Otavibergland in Richtung Grootfontein, wo sich die Parzellen der Farmer auf grasbedeckten Feldern links und rechts bis an die Berge ausweiten und die Schirmakazien stolz in der Landschaft stehen, da meine ich, fängt für mich der sogenannte Norden an, den wir beide, meine Frau Irene und ich, jetzt im August für uns neu entdeckt haben. Wir hatten die Sambesi-, früher Caprivi-Region im Ziel, mal Unbekanntes und Neues auf der Reise vorfinden zu wollen. Die erste Etappe ging bis zur Kalkfontein Gästefarm, welche nördlich von Grootfontein liegt. Es stimmt wirklich: Aus Kalkklippen am Boden quirlt ein Wasserschwall hervor, der sich in einen Teich mit Fischen ergießt. Beachtlich so mitten im Busch! Die zweite Etappe von Swakopmund aus ging durch das Laubwaldgebiet bis nach Rundu und dann am Nachmittag 200km auf guter Asphaltstraβe Richtung Osten bis zu dem Ort Divundu. Nach 25 km Richtung Süd auf der Westseite des Okavangoriviers erreichten wir dann die Mahangu Safari River Lodge, idyllisch zwischen Laubbäumen gelegen. Die Ferienhäuschen und die schattigen Campingplätze verteilen sich in unregelmäßigen Abständen durch den Uferwald, wo viel Gefieder mir unbekannter Arten herumflatterten und uns morgens gleich das Aufstehen erschwerten: ein Henglin's Robin Pärchen sang so hübsch, aber gleichzeitig derart aufdringlich, daß wir die Fenster schließen mussten und uns noch mal umdrehten, denn es waren ja Ferien und Ausschlafen angesagt; und sowieso kein Weckbefehl in der Wildnis! Vier
Caprivianer auf einer Donkeykarre. Tage verbrachten wir in dieser beschaulichen Anlage, die sogar Bootsfahrten auf dem Okavango anbietet: Herausragend war aber die Frühstücksfahrt auf dem Alu-Flußschiff mit Oberdeck! Besonders gefiel mir auch das krokodilfreie Eisenstangenquadrat im fließenden Fluß, wo man vergnüglich baden konnte. An einem der nächsten Tage erkundeten wir den südlich gelegenen Mbabwate-Mahangu Wildpark, bekannt für seinen Wildreichtum bezüglich der Tsessebe, Pferde- und Säbelantilopen, welche auch dann in unmittelbarer Nähe die Pad kreuzen. Elefanten gab es genug, einige Büffel in der Ferne machten den Ausflug zum Erfolg. Nach ausgiebiger Zeit fuhren wir weiter in Richtung Katima Mulilo durch die sogenannte 4 River Route (Okavango, Kwando, Zambesi und Chobe) bis zur Chobe River Lodge. Aufgrund des ausufernden Rivierwassers während der Regenzeit stehen die Hauszelte auf Stelzen, wenn der Chobe vom Zambesi gefüllt wird, sozusagen ein Ausweichbecken, wenn sich die Wassermassen aus Zentralangola nach Sϋdosten wälzen. In der Winterzeit, wenn sich der Wasserspiegel des Zambesi wieder senkt, fließt das Wasser aus dem Chobebecken wieder in den Zambesi zurück. Hier beobachteten wir vom Boot aus spät nachmittags ein seltenes Ereignis: Eine friedvoll weidende Impalaherde wurde plötzlich von einem

Trupp wilder Hunde angegriffen, welche anschlieβend einigen Gazellen nachjagten, um diese zu packen. Dies Vorhaben gelang ihnen nicht: Impalas sprangen eben im hohen Bogen ϋber Erdgräben, welche die wilden Hunde aber durchlaufen mussten. Also gewannen die Impala Zeit und verschwanden im Uferdickicht. Die Hunde mit ihrem gefleckten Haarkleid und weißer Schwanzspitze gingen also leer aus. Eine nächste Attacke auf irgendetwas Fleischiges kommt
ihnen in dieser wildreichen Gegend. bestimmt zugute. Dies war der östlichste Abstecher am Chobe. Das nächste Mal wollen wir uns besser vorbereiten: über die Geschichte dieses abgelegenen Zipfels mehr wissen wollen, über die einheimische Bevölkerung mehr nachlesen und Geduld haben für die weiten Abstände der Ortschaften. Das nächste Mal werden die Victoriafälle unser Ziel sein.

Folge 3 Im Jahr darauf hatte Tante einen recht ungünstigen Zeitpunkt gewählt. Er fiel mit Onkel Karls Geburtstag zusammen, was bedeutete, dass wir sie drei Tage sich selbst überlassen mussten. Tante Barbara sah keinen Grund, deshalb ihre Reise zu verschieben. Sie werde schon ein Auge auf Haus und Personal haben. “Bloss nicht”, seufzte Mutter. “Sie wird sich mit Mamsell anlegen, und dann bekommt die wieder ihre Migräne.” Mamsell nahm denn auch die Ankündigung, drei Tage allein mit unserem Gast unter einem Dach sein zu müssen, recht wortkarg auf, so dass Mutter, von den schlimmsten Befürchtungen geplagt, den Geburtstag gar nicht so recht genießen konnte. Einen Tag eher als geplant, fuhren wir wie-
der zurück. Unser erster Weg führte in die Küche im Souterrain. Mamsell war nirgends zu sehen. Dafür ertönten aus dem Esszimmer laute Stimmen, die zweifellos Mamsell und Tante Barbara gehörten. “Mein Gott, sie liegen sich in den Haaren!” Mutter eilte nach oben, wir hinterher. Im Esszimmer bot sich uns ein erstaunliches Bild. Der Tisch war ausgezogen und über und über mit Puzzlestücken bedeckt. Darüber gebeugt saßen Seite an Seite Mamsell und Tante. Mamsell hatte offensichtlich das Kommando. Assisitiert von Tante Barbara, setzte sie die Teilchen zu üppig wuchernden Urwaldpflanzen und farbenprächtigem Getier zusammen. “Da seid ihr ja wieder!” rief unser Gast. “Ihr glaubt gar nicht, wie geschickt Mamsell ist.” “Die gnädige Frau ist auch nicht schlecht”, brummte Mamsell geschmeichelt. “Ein herrliches Spiel, nicht wahr?” Tante bückte sich und klaubte Möpschen den Torso eines Kolibris aus dem
Fell. “ich hatte ganz vergessen, dass ich es euch geschenkt habe.” “Und was du uns damit für eine Freude gemacht hast”, sagte Mutter aufrichtig. “Das kann man wohl sagen”, pflichtete Vater ihr bei. Zwar konnten wir bis zu Tantes Abreise das Esszimmer nicht mehr benutzen, und Mamsell war mehr mit dem Puzzle als mit dem Einkochen beschäftigt, aber das nahmen wir gern in Kauf. Ruhe und Frieden herrschten im Haus. Nur Lore, unser Hausmädchen, maulte über die vielen Krümel auf dem Teppich im Wohnzimmer, in dem wir jetzt unsere Mahlzeiten einnahmen. “Wir müssen alle Opfer bringen”, sagte Vater und betrachtete angewidert einen Soßenspritzer auf seinem Lieblings-Sofakissen. Advents- und Weihnachtsmärkte von Erfolg gekrönt Swakopmund (sk) Gleich zwei Weihnachtsmärkte fanden am Samstag, den 1. Dezember in bzw. bei Swakopmund statt. Da gab es zum einen den im Green Market Centre, der sein 4. Jubiläum feierte. Dort wimmelte es vor allem um die Mittagszeit von Besuchern, die sich bei schönstem Sonnenschein an den weihnachtlichen Ständen und den kulina-
feierlichen Flair gab. Zum kühler werdenden Abend hin wärmte man sich am Glühwein und genoss die Beleuchtung. Die Initiatorin des monatlich stattfindenden Marktes, Bea Röhrich, hatte somit allen Grund, rundum zufrieden zu sein, und auch die Aussteller und Besucher waren glücklich. Etwas ruhiger und gediegener ging es auf der Olivenfarm Shalom 12 km außerhalb

von Thomas Weinmann Ich stehe auf dem Mond. Der Himmel ist tiefschwarz, die Sterne sind so klar wie nirgends auf der Erde zu erkennen. Und am Horizont ist die Erde am Aufgehen, ein riesiger blauer Ball mit vielen weissen Wolken und braun-grünen Flecken. Wie ein Edelstein hebt sie sich von der
Schaudern gehe ich darauf zu, komme näher und sehe, dass es sich um einen Neubau eines Einfamilienhauses in rustikalem Stil handelt. Weisse Wände, Biberschwanz-Ziegel. Ich trete durch die offene Türe in das Innere, welches eine sympathische Wärme ausstrahlt. Da ist niemand, aber man sieht deutlich, dass sich alles
kargen Mondlandschaft und der unendlichen schwarzen Weite des Alls ab, ein atemberaubender Anblick! Um mich herum ist es komplett still. Nur das leise Zischen des reinen Sauerstoffs, der in den Anzug strömt, ist zu vernehmen. Obwohl ich komplett in eine komplizierte Technik eingebunden bin, um in dieser feindlichen Umgebung zu überleben, fühle ich mich in einzigartiger Weise geborgen und aufgehoben. Ich lasse meinen Blick über die Wüste des Mondes schweifen – da ist nichts als Staub, Sand, Steine, Felsen und Krater. Dann erblickte ich es: Ein Haus, das auf einer kleinen Anhöhe steht! Mit einem leichten
noch im Bau befindet da stehen Farbkessel, Werkzeuge und Leitern herum. Ich schreite durch die Räume erfüllt von großer Geborgenheit, von Glück und Sehnsucht zugleich. Da ertönt im Helm von weit her eine Stimme die mich zur Umkehr mahnt. So schreite ich durch die Tür hinaus in die Weite der kargen Mondlandschaft. Vor der Haustür greife ich in die Tasche und finde einen Schlüssel. Nachdenklich stecke ich ihn ins Schloss. Er passt! Ich schließe damit die Haustür ab. Da werde ich mir gewiss: Dieses Haus wird einmal mein Haus sein! Es befällt mich eine große, gleichzeitig mit starker Sehnsucht gepaarte Traurigkeit.
Aber ich muss gehen. Und ich will gar nicht erst aufwachen… Jahre später werde ich mit Brustschmerzen ins Spital gebracht. Die Nacht auf der Intensivstation ist schlimm,

ich mache kaum ein Auge zu. Am nächsten Tag bekomme ich Besuch von einer Bekannten. Diese bringt mir eine Karte mit einem Bild von der aufgehenden Erde, welches ein Astronaut auf dem Mond gemacht hat - was mir einen gehörigen Schrecken einjagt! Doch die Karte ist unbeschrieben. Sie sagt etwas verlegen, die Karte habe ihr sehr zugesagt, aber es sei ihr nichts zum Schreiben dazu eingefallen. Gott sei Dank! Das letzte Kapitel ist noch nicht geschrieben. Es stellt sich heraus, dass der vermeintliche Herzinfarkt auf die belastende Situation am Arbeitsplatz zurückzuführen ist. Bis seit vielen Jahren schon liegt die unbeschriebene Karte auf dem Gestell in meinem Büro… Gerade an Weihnachten denke ich wieder an den Zuspruch von Jesus:”Euer Herz erschrecke nicht! Glaubet an Gott und glaubet an mich! In dem Haus meines Vaters sind viele Wohnungen. Ich gehe voraus, euch diese vorzubereiten. NAKU strikes gold The Namibia Karate strikes gold at 2018 Commonwealth Karate Championships that was held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa. The Namibia Karate Union (NAKU) is incredibly proud to announce and its team of 43 athletes that participated in the 9th Commonwealth Karate Championships managed to secure 6 Commonwealth bronze medals and 1 Commonwealth gold medal. The tournament consisted of both the Commonwealth Cup (under 14 years, veterans and masters divisions) and the Commonwealth Championships (cadets, juniors, under 21 and seniors) with 936 contestants from 13 countries competed in the four day tournament. Since its inclusion into the 2020 Olympic Games, there has been tremendous growth in karate worldwide therefore the Commonwealth Karate Championships are seen as one of the highest platforms for elite level karate participation. These athletes have proven that Namibia Karate is not only ready to compete against some of the

National Men’s Team Coach With the finalisation of the ICC Men's Competitions in October 2018, Cricket in Namibia is on the threshold of an exciting and challenging new era.
In the future, international 50 over matches will be structured into three leagues as pathways to the 2023 World Cup. The 12 test nations plus the Netherlands will compete in the CWC Super league whilst the next ranked associate countries will compete in the 7 team CWC League 2, below which will be the CWC Challenge League. Namibia has already won the hosting rights from the ICC for the final qualification tournament for the CWC League 2 from 18 to 28 April 2019. This it is a notable achievement. The teams competing in the tournament will be Namibia, Canada, Hong Kong, PNG, Oman and the USA of whom the top 4 will go through to join Scotland, Nepal and the UAE in CWC League 2. Namibia therefore has the prospect of competing with the top associates in world cricket over a 2 year period with matches played home and away at some of the most exciting venues in the world. Following the promotion of the previous men's national coach to the position of Manager of Development and Age Group Coaching, as part of Cricket Namibia's commitment to achieving qualification and keeping Namibia amongst the elite of world cricket, we embarked on the process of appointing a new coach in August 2018. Following an exhaustive process of advertising, short listing and interviewing Cricket Namibia are proud to announce the appointment of Pierre de Bruyn with effect from 1 January 2019. We were also proud to note the quality of the prospective
candidates, many of whom had international coaching experience, and are confident that Pierre was not only the best candidate but also the best fit for our present and future ambitions. Pierre played provincial cricket in South Africa for the Titans and the Dolphins and represented South Africa in the Hong Kong Sixes before moving into various coaching roles. As the Leicestershire County Head Coach, he had significant success with Leicestershire with white ball cricket. Pierre is also an accomplished presenter and is currently an International Commentator and broadcaster. In his own words: "I am very excited to take on the role as Head Coach for a National Team with such rich history and tradition. It is a country that has the potential to compete with the top Associate teams in the world and I am confident that we can align our vision and goals to reach success. As a former Leicestershire County Head Coach, I have learnt a lot and looking to implement good and clear strategies within the Cricket Namibia pipeline. It is important for me that every young player in Namibia should dream of playing for their country. We have a very important phase coming up from January - April where we will play in the Qualifiers to stay in Division 2 and there is hard work lying ahead to prepare as a squad for the tournament." Cricket Namibia would like to take this opportunity to welcome Pierre de Bruyn as our new national Men's Coach.
The tournament will start with a RVS-parade through the streets of Swakopmund at 11:00 on Thursday (13 December). The event will consist of various dressage and show jumping stages, which will start on 13 December. The competition comes to a close on Sunday (16 December). The tournament will be intermitted by skydivers' spot landings and pony rides to keep the children entertained. There will also be stalls offering the latest fashion in equestrian wear, a jumping castle and games for children. There will also be lots of action in the Joker Top Score, Six Bar High Jump and Jumping Derbys as well as the Musical dressage Freestyles. The event will be preceded by a Christmas party for children at the stables on 12 December at 18:00. Anyone is welcome to join the tournament and the Christmas party. Parents are requested to bring a small gift for their children and a snack. The results of the recently concluded FEI Show are as follows: Final leg competition 3 round 1 and 2 Cat A 1.2 m / 1.3 m Michelle Künzle on Voigtskirch Sovereign came in first place. Cat B 1.1 m / 1.2 m Anette Künzle on Seeis Elton came in first place and Michelle Künzle on Lorcarno Dicaprio came in second place. The overall winners from leg 1 to 3 are: Cat A champion is Nadine Flemmings on Seeis Shelton. The 5th social triathlon Junior Nationals Sailing Championships Rudi Bowe The fifth and final social triathlon was recently held at the Waterfront in Walvis Bay. A group of local volunteers started a series of social triathlons in May this year with the first of five events at the harbour town. The social triathlons were established for triathlon athletes to practice and for the newbies. Entries for the triathlons are free to all. The triathlon sprint consisted of a 400 metre swim, 20 km cycle and a 4 km run. The duathlon consisted of a 5 km run, 20 km cycle and a 2.5 km run. Children under 16 participated in a 2 km run, 10 km cycle and a 1 km run. The little ones also had an opportunity to participate in a mini triathlon that consisted of a 150 m swim, 7 km cycle and a 2 km run. The social triathlons that are sponsored by Herco, Seaworks and OTB sport will give triathlon enthusiasts the opportunity to participate for bigger triathlons in the country.
The Namibian Sailing Association (NSA) hosted its Junior Nationals at the Yacht Club in Walvis Bay over the weekend. For the first time since its inception the event, it was held in two different types of dinghies namely the Optimist Sailing Dinghy and Laser Sailing Dinghy to allow greater participation. Catamaran Charters was the sponsor of the event that was hosted by Walvis Bay Yacht Club. The Optimist Sailing Dinghy, an international class boat designed specifically for children by American boat designer Clark Mills in 1947. The Laser class is also an international class used for the Olympic men's single handed. The wind on Saturday started with a steady 6-10 knots and the heats took placeto allow qualification for the Final Medal race. The first two heats of the Optimist Class were won by Nicole Steyn with second place going to Mary- Ann Eeden in the first heat and Jacques Swart in the second. In the laser Albertus de Klerk showed his prowess by winning both heats with second place going to Gerald McCarthy and Mathew Quinn respectively. By the time for the fifth heat the wind had really increased and it was exciting sailing in the Optimists with Xenia Plarre winning and Nicole Steyn in second place. The Laser classes saw several dinghies capsize by Elmi McCarthy and only one finisher Karli Rudolph who persevered in the difficult conditions to cross the line in first place. The blue sky and strong winds of Saturday afternoon were replaced by cloud and a northerly wind for the start of Sunday with races starting early to finish the last of the heats. The lighter winds suited Gerald McCarthy in the Laser with Jonathan van Zyl taking the second. In the optimist class Jaques Swart won with Mary-Ann van Eeden taking second again.
Going into the Medal race final it was very close with Gerald, Albertus, Karli, Nicole and Xenia all looking like strong contenders. The final race was started in a light breeze and the tide across the course was strong it certainly provided some really tricky conditions for the competitors. All boats started together and with the start line just in front of the club house spectators had an awesome view. As the race progressed the faster Laser looked like it was going to have an advantage as it finished the three laps in 31minutes and six seconds. But the wind filled in and the first Optimist finished in 44 minutes and 12 seconds, which was good enough to take the event on handicap. The prize giving was conducted by Christo Swart from the Namibian Sailing Association thanks to the Commodore of WBYC, Theo Schoemans who was also rescue cover; principle race officer, Peter Davidson and to all parents and competitors who supported the event in addition to the sponsor Catamaran Charters. Final PISCS Monthly Medal The final PISCS Monthly Medal for 2018 at the Walvis Bay golf club was held recently. The club thanked Mr. JJ Fourie from PISCS for his continuous sponsorship to the club's Monthly Medal. It is much needed format and the sponsorship is really appreciated. Participation throughout the year improved compared to previous years. The year's overall winner and elected winner will be announced soon.
