The Mayor of Swakopmund, Dina Namubes announced in a council meeting held on Tuesday this week, the long-anticipated handover of land ownership in the Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) will take place on 16 April. According to Namubes, a total of 897 beneficiaries will be receiving ownership certificates for ervens which will give them access to municipal services and they can also construct permanent structures. Fishing Employees face unemployment Rudi Bowe

Emlpoyees at Etosha Fishing are facing unemployment as the company plans to shut down operations after facing a moratorium on pilchard fisheries since 2018. Etosha Fishing's Managing Director, Volker Paulsmeier confirmed the company's plans to lay off some of their employees. Paulsmeier said the company has given notice to the Labour Commissioner on 31st March 2023 of its intention to terminate contracts due to operational requirements as is required by the Labour Act (Act 11 of 2007). The presedent of the National Service and Allied Workers Union (NASAWU,) Paulus Hango expressed deep concern over the proposed intention to terminate contracts. Hango described the termination of employment contracts as an attack on the livelihood of hundreds of workers and their families. He warned that the termination of employment contracts could have a devastating impact on the wider local community and the country as a whole. Hango proposed that the ministry of fisheries consider allocating some horse mackerel from the government objective quota to Etosha Fishing He said that the Union will call a meeting with the fisheries and finance ministries to work out a solution to avert job losses.

CMA CGM Namibia donates Mineworkers Union expresses disMaternity satisfaction regarding Rössing's Gift Packs Sharlien Tjambari 'separation process’ to Walvis The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) expressed its Bay state dissatisfaction and unequivocal discontent with the way the management of Rössing Uranium Mine, under ownership of hospital China National Uranium Corporation Ltd (CNUC) is handling the issue of the Life of Mine Extension on Tuesday this week. After CNUC's acquisition of a majority shareholding in 2019 from Rio Tinto. The Life of mine was due to end in 2026. The CNUC then applied for the Life of Mine extension, which extension would see the life of mine extending to 2036. In a statement, the Erongo Regional Coordinator of MUN, George Ampweya said, “it was however with shock and utter dismay that the Branch Executive Committee of the Mineworkers Union of Namibia came to know of the plans by management to retrench approximately 400 workers under the disguise of the introduction of the voluntary separation process to all employees which was announced at quarterly Employees' Managing Director's briefing session on the 23 February 2023.” According to the statement by Ampweya, the CNUC management cited that the current model of operations proved to be extremely costly as it pertains, specifically to the retention of permanent employees and based on their assessments, outsourcing permanent employment jobs to subcontractors would be beneficial to the intended process. “This is clear that the new capitalist CNUC majority shareholder is opting for Continues on page 2
