Fuel price increase looms
inside Rough Petrol and diesel prices Arandis and Henties Bay & Tough increase by 30c per liter “twin” for a better future Rally The Ministry of Mines and Energy informed the Namibian fuel supply industry that June’s fuel price increase would take effect at one minute past midnight on Wednesday 5 May. The increase entails a 30 cents per liter increase for both petrol and diesel. Petrol at Walvis Bay fuel retail stations would cost N$13,05 and diesel would cost N$13,63.
Walvis Bay woman caught with 256 Mandrax tablets Eileen van der Schyff A 59-year-old woman appeared in the magistrate's court of Walvis Bay on Wednesday on a charge of dealing in cannabis and Mandrax. Elizabeth Vinindwa was arrested at her house in the suburb of Kuisebmond in the early evening of Tuesday 28 May. A total of 256 full Mandrax tablets (valued at N$26 600) and 100g of cannabis were found in her possession (pictured below).
Sharlien Tjambari The two respective local authorities of Henties Bay and Arandis entered into a twinning agreement earlier this week, creating a platform for the two towns to be better managed by sharing ideas, learn from one another's experience and augment one another where technical knowledge and know-how lacks. Several Namibian towns, including Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, has twinning agreements in place, but traditionally only with cities and towns abroad. The twinning agreement between the two Erongo towns is very unusual, but a positive step for development and service delivery. Areas where the two towns will closely cooperate with one another is capacity building in the fields of strategic management, financial management, human resources, local economic development and municipal infrastructure development and maintenance, said the two municipalities in a press statement earlier this week. Arandis and Henties Bay face a similar challenges in that economic opportunities are limited. Henties Bay is primarily a holiday- and retirement town whilst Arandis is a service centre for the uranium mining industry. However, both towns enhances economic potential through tertiary education institutions (NiMT at Arandis and Unam's Sam Nujoma Campus at Henties Bay) and both towns work hard to attract local manufacturers to set up manufacturing units there and both towns.

The Rough & Tough Rally has become a prestigious, but also an extremely fun event, which was created to raise funds and awareness of cancer in aid of the Cancer Association Of Namibia. This year a total of thirty-nine teams entered with nine support vehicles. One hundred and twenty people stood together to fight the fight against cancer! Last year the Rough & Tough Rally raised around N$200 000 that was contributed to the Cancer association of Namibia. The event started at Windhoek's Tony Rust racetrack. From there everyone headed towards Karibib where they overnighted at the Klippenberg Country Lodge. They next day was the drive past Usakos and the participants had lunch at Spitzkoppe. The slept over at the Brandberg Rest Camp in Uis. On day three, participants headed through the Omaruru River, past Okombahe and onto the D-2315. On that night they overnighted at the Koedoeberg Lodge. The driving force behind the Rough & Touch Rally is Phillipie Baard with tremendous support from his family. His brother Dirky Baard had his bicycle on the roof of his combi as a Plan B. Dirky thanks all the sponsors and says that it really made a difference.

“The HOG’s” were a blessing Bikers spent more than N$2,5m in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund Rudi Bowe The 3rd Skeleton Coast Rally, hosted by the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Namibia Chapter, saw hundreds of owners of these iconic motorcycles converging on the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. The Swakopmund Football Club (SFC) played a big role as the main venue for the event. Riders from across Namibia and as far afield as South Africa turned out for the event. Coastal residents could marvel at the powerful machines during the “Thunder Parade” when the engines roared and the distinct thunderous whiplash by which a backfiring Harley expresses itself. It spurred the imaginations of a road trip on one of these iconic machines and others were reminded of the mantra by
which a Harley-owner lives: “don't wait for life, ride to meet it”. Then there were Harley games, a charity auction which raised N$38 000 and the gathering of people who share a passion and life around all things Harley Davidson. On Sunday, a church service was held at SFC to bless the riders and to give thanks for the blessings of life. The organiser of the Rally, Christian Knickel, said there is no doubt that this event once again had a mo-
mentous impact on the two coastal towns' economies. It is estimated that the event culminated in the spending of more than N$2,5 million into the two coastal towns' economies. Said Knickel: “The Skeleton Coast Rally is presented every two years where riders from Namibia and South Africa get together to have fun”. He added that some of the riders entered the country at Katima Mulilo, via Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Your unused books can make a difference Donate to the school library of Festus Gonteb Eileen van der Schyff Books you have already read and which are gathering dust on the bookshelf can become handy in the education of children at Mondesa and Swakopmund's Festus Gonteb Primary School. The school has a library thanks to the Mondesa Community School Foundation and the energy behind the Foundation, Nande Junias. The school bought books but it is not enough. The coast's public can now help to make the difference by donating books to this library and in that way make a lasting difference. The school library at Festus Gonteb was established with the help of the Mondesa Community School Foundation. “We opened a library where children have access to computers and we also employed a full time Librarian who runs the daily operations and help the children with assignments and homework during and after school hours.” Junias told the Namib Times. Junias explained that the library got some books from donations from abroad, but it is not enough. The Mondesa Community School Foundation therefor asks for donations of children books to be placed on the shelves of the Festus Gonteb School Library. The library needs books for children aged 5 to 18 years. “With the funds we collected thus far, we purchased new books from Swakopmund CNA to fill some shelves.” Junias said. Namibia schmeckt nach europäischafrikanischer Fusionsküche: reichhaltig, würzig, bodenständig und fettig. Genau das Richtige für den kalten Winter! Das Zentrum vieler namibischer Gerichte ist der Mieliepap oder Maisbrei, dessen Zubereitung in der vorherigen Ausgabe beschrieben wurde. Hier nun die Rezepte dreier Beilagen: Ombidi Spinat: Zutaten: 1 kg Spinat, 1 Zwiebel, 3 Tomaten, Sonnenblumenöl, KapanaGewürz. Zubereitung: 1. Spinat gut waschen und Wasser zum Kochen bringen. Dann den Spinat ins heiße Wasser geben und köcheln lassen, bis er gar ist. 2. Tomaten und Zwiebeln klein schneiden. 3. Spinat abschütten und das Gemüse und Öl darunter heben. Je nach Belieben würzen. Chakalaka: Zutaten: 1 Zwiebel, 150g Karotten, 1 Paprika (rot), 1 Dose Bohnen,1 Dose gehackte Tomaten, 1TL Chilipulver, 1TL Currypulver, 1TL Paprikapulver. Zubereitung: 1. Zwiebel schälen und klein hacken. Auch Paprika und Karotten klein schneiden. 2. Zwiebeln mit Curry, Chili und Paprika-Gewürz 10 Minuten in einer großen Pfanne anschwitzen und umrühren. Die Karotten hinzufügen. Weitere 20 Minuten auf geringer Stufe vor sich

Dieses Bild der Farm Babelsberg, die Familie Kopp aus dem Nichts aufgebaut hat, hängt bei Dieter Kopp in der Wohnung. Heute gehört die Farm der Regierung. Swakopmund (sk) In unserer Mitte gibt es etliche Senioren, die viel zu erzählen haben. Ich habe mich mit dem 95jährigen Dieter Kopp in der Antonius-Residenz unterhalten. In fünf Folgen dürfen Sie auf seiner Lebensreise eine Brise Nostalgie einatmen. Folge 4 Als Dieter und Ines Kopp ihre Tätigkeit bei der HaribesCompany aufgeben mussten, lagen harte Zeiten bevor. Neben
meine elterliche Farm Masuren, damit sie erstmal aufgehoben waren. Ein Baster von Kakoes baute dann ein Haus für uns, ich lieferte das Material. Meine Frau kam so um 1951/52 auf die Farm. Nach einem Jahr verloren wir 150 Schafe, weil es zu viel regnete. Danach haben wir fünf wunderbare Jahre auf unseren gepachteten Farmen im Basterland verbracht, haben geschafft und geschafft.” Von der Regierung wurde damals Farmland ausgegeben, und
der SWA-Administration unter Administrator Oom Johannes van der Wath. “Meine Frau und ich haben uns eine Farm bei Kamanjab ausgesucht, die wir Babelsberg tauften - nach der Heimat meiner Frau.” Babelsberg war nichts weiter als rohes Land, und es musste von der Picke aufgebaut werden. Als das Haus dann stand, kam Ines Kopp mit den Kindern auch auf die Farm. Inzwischen war die Familie Kopp nämlich zu fünft. Ihre drei

ihren eigenen 350 Schafen übernahmen sie nun auch noch die Verwaltung über die 2000 Schafe von Herrn Poser. “Und das, obwohl wir kein Land besaßen”, schildert der 95jährige Dieter Kopp die schwere Lage und fährt fort: “Wir pachteten dann drei Farmen bei Kalkrand im Basterland: Kakoes, Ommamas und Soutrivier. Wir saßen also mit einem gepachteten Land und 2000 Schafen von Herrn Poser, aber ohne Haus. Ich schickte meine Frau und unseren ältesten Sohn Erni (ErnstErich) ‘rauf auf
auch damals schon zählten bei solch einem Farmkauf gewisse Beziehungen. Also bewarb sich unser heutiger Einwohner der Antoniusresidenz bei

geboren. Die Familie baute die Farm Babelsberg im Kaokoveld über eine Zeitspanne von 27 Jahren auf. Hierzu kommentiert Dieter Kopp: “Die schönste, aber auch die schwerste Zeit meines Lebens waren die 50er, 60er und 70er Jahre. Wir waren im Aufbau. Und man war WER. Der Name Kopp war überall bekannt. Heute ist doch alles so anonym. Man ist nur noch eine Nummer. Wir hatten wirklich eine gute Zeit, haben sie uns aber auch schwer erworben.” 1980 mussten Ines und Dieter Kopp Babelsberg der ewigen Trockenheit wegen schweren Herzens verkaufen. Ein Gerd Steyn übernahm die Farm, und das Ehepaar kaufte sich ein Haus in Otjiwarongo. Da war unser 95-Jähriger 57 Jahre alt. Neun Jahre lang war er als Depot-Manager bei der Brauererei Namibian Breweries beschäftigt. Seine Frau wiederum genoss zur Abwechslung einmal das Dasein mit den Hunden im Haus. 1995 zogen Ines und Dieter Kopp im Alter von Anfang 70 nach Swakopmund....

Oder steckt ein Naturgesetz dahinter, dass Frauen viel für ihre Attraktivität tun bzw. als anmutiger angesehen werden als Männer? Die verblüffende Antwort ist: Man
eher die Wahl ihres Partners als in meiner Jugendzeit, wo es noch umgekehrt war - oder schien. Nehmen wir einmal die namibische Felsen- oder Plattkopfagame, die man vor allem im Nordwesten und den zentralen Gebieten unseres Landes immer mal wieder auf Gestein herumkraxeln sieht. Das ansehnliche Männchen sticht einem förmlich ins Auge mit

Ganz so unattraktiv finde ich den weiblichen “koggelmander” (Afrikaans) - hier auf der Omandumba-Farm im Erongo - nun auch wieder nicht. Die leuchtend orangenen Stellen hinter den Schultern und die gelblichen Flecken am Kopf geben ihr durchaus einen ästhetischen Touch.
Grundfarbe fast unscheinbar. Ich fühle mich aber trotz der faszinierenden Farbkombination des Männchens eher von der weiblichen Agame angezogen. Und das scheint gegenseitig zu sein, denn ich traf in der Natur bisher immer sehr zutrauliche Eidechsen des weiblichen Geschlechts dieser Art, die sich gerne in meiner Nähe aufhielten. Gefallen hat mir nicht nur ihre Zutraulichkeit, sondern auch die Neugierde und ihr ständiges Kopfnicken, das mir wie der Sirenengesang eines Traumpartners klang: “Ja, du hast Recht. Ja, du hast immer Recht.” Also, an dieser Form von Attraktion zwischen weiblicher Plattkopfagama und weiblichem Wölbkopf der Art homo sapiens sapiens werden nicht nur Forscher, sondern auch Psychologen sicherlich ihre helle Freude haben. Menstruation is not a choice Sharlien Tjambari Estomitch Muniazo, one of the persons who benefitted from the donation of sanitary pads by the Swakopmund Lions Club, says sanitary pads should be free for learners. Menstruation, she argues, is not a choice. The harsh reality is thousands of teenage girls suffer monthly as they don’t have the financial means to afford sanitary pads and that severely impacts the quality of their lives, including having to go to school under these very challenging circumstances. The donation of the pads formed part of the commemoration of Menstrual Health and Hygiene Day at the Swakopmund Secondary School on Tuesday. Often girls suffer from stress and depression brought on by the fear of
staining their clothes during their menstrual cycle. Not to mention the discomfort and embarrassment which accompanies such worst case scenarios. Many also suffer pain during menstruation and often have no means for medicine to
ease the situation. The Director of Education, Arts and Culture in Erongo, Ernfriede Stephanus, explained this is the second year that Namibia commemorates Menstrual Health and Hygiene Day. An awareness campaign amongst adolescents, educators, parents and policy makers on the importance of dignified menstrual health and hygiene management commenced at the beginning of May, leading up to the main event on 28 May under the theme “It is time for Action”. Stephanus further said: “Namibia will focus on increased policy and programs to focus public attention on menstrual hygiene management. It is a critical challenge towards social empowerment. Namibia will also focus on targeting various sectors of the population to ensure that everyone is aware of the actions they must take in order to ensure dignity for all women and girls”. The main event was commemorated in Kavango
East this year. The purpose of commemorating Menstrual Hygiene Day is to create awareness on menstrual hygiene management (MHM) by providing right information to assist teachers, boys, girls and the community to understand MHM issues. “With the involvement of different stakeholders we intend to make the provision of sanitary products a continuous activity. I would like to thank all sponsors”. Renate Witt of the Lions Club in Swakopmund was delighted to have commemorate this very important day with the children of Swakopmund Secondary School (SSS). She was so much more satisfied with the fact boys attended the proceedings, as this is a sign that Namibian men join the fight in Menstrual Health Management as their female loved ones too are affected by this. The Lions Club, explained Witt, is there to serve the community wherever and with whenever they can. Last year
the Club realised that there was a need for sanitary products among school learners. They responded to the call and started asking for donations on behalf of the girls. “Last year Plartz am Meer donated N$15 000, the Lions Club donated the same amount and so did each member of the Lions Club, in the end we have about N$60 000 for this project and lucky enough, Platz am Meer gave us a storage unit where we are keeping the sanitary products. We asked that each month every school should take the needed amount of sanitary products from the storage room to their schools but, I am not happy with the fact that only six out of the 11 schools went to collect the products”, Witt said further. She also said this products are only meant for the needy girls in all 11 government schools in Swakopmund and it is a project which is of benefit to the community and pledged the Lions will keep this project alive and going.

Pescanova and Novanam Monthly Medal A field of 34 golfers took to the fairways, despite the east wind that was cooking up a storm for the Pescanova/ Novanam Monthly Medal Competition held on Saturday 25 May at the Rossmund Golf course. Fortunately the weather conditions settled down and the guys/gals played some excellent golf – as always it was great to see Michael Tordesillas out there enjoying the day. Tsumeb beat Walvis Bay in interclub golf competition Despite sending up the biggest contingent in many years, consisting of 18 teams (36 players) the Walvis Bay Golf Club was unable to defeat Tsumeb on their home course last Saturday. After a long day, the final score was Tsumeb 11.5 and Walvis Bay 6.5. Winning their match plays for Walvis Bay were Herman Smidt & Wayne Hart, Gunther Heitmann and Duane Sanders, AndrĂŠ Burger & Willie Venter, Des Benson & Warren Theron and Willie Els and Johnny G while three other teams managed a half, which indicates that the contest was indeed a tight one and Walvis did not surrender the trophy without a fight. In the Betterball Stableford competition, the best performing teams from Walvis were Jans Stander and Anton van Rensburg on 43 points, followed by Bertus Venter and Cailean van der Fecht on 42 points and Willie Venter and AndrĂŠ Burger on 41. As always, we were spoiled endlessly by our Tsumeb hosts who deserve a big thank you. We look forward to winning the trophy back when they visit us in 2020. Locally, a field of 16 players took part in a Club-sponsored Individual Stableford competition. Jaco Greeff played an excellent round of golf with a 72 gross and came first with 40 points. Johan van Zyl was second with 39 points, Tienie de Wet third with 38 points and Koot Potgieter was fourth after a count-out with Frans Grobler on 37 points. There were no 2clubs and the winner of the Lucky Draw was Wynand Moller. Tomorrow 1st June will be the Individual Stableford a Sanlam Cancer Club competition at the Walvis Bay Golf course. With the long weekend coming up, Kudus Rugby Club will hold a Rugby day Saturday 1 June at Narraville Stadium in Walvis Bay. The coastal clubs Kudus, Vikings, Sparta, Dolphins and Erongo Rugby Academy (ERA) will be in action as well as the under 15 and 19 teams of De Duine Secondary School and Swakopmund Secondary School (SSS). In the first game of the day, De Duine's under 15 will take on the under 15 team of SSS with the under 19 teams of De Duine and SSS will battle it out. Exciting running rugby between the school teams are expected. De Duine who is playing in the Metropolitan Super schools League this year were on losing side in their first two league matches would like to get their first win of the season. The game between ERA and Dolphins will be just exciting as Dolphins won the first game of the season between these two teams at their home ground in Swakopmund. ERA lost all their games thus far would like to make use of their home ground and get a win. A hardcore game is expected between Kudus 2 and Sparta as the two teams will measure forces against
each other after a very long time. Sparta is the underdogs for this game as they are playing in the Namibian Rugby Union's First Division league. The final game of the day will be between Kudus 1 and Vikings. Vikings are currently unbeaten in the Namibian Rugby Union's First Division league and want to build on it. This will be a hard game that awaits Kudus 1 and they will have to give their all in front their home crowed and show that they are the team to beat at the coast and that they are the coastal giants. The clubs invites their supporters and the community to came and support the day. The gate fees are N$20 per adult N$10 per car and N$10 per scholar. The G4S Africa Bhubesi Pride Foundation (BPF) coaching team visit concluded in Namibia with a well attended and fun filled rugby coaching clinic and tournament for primary schools at the Sparta United Recreation Club in Walvis Bay. Kuisebond Primary school is the champions in the senior division and NPS Hurricanes the junior champions of the G4S Bhubesi Pride Africa rugby day tournament. The five participating schools with approximately 200 learners ranging from under 9 to under 12 age groups was Flamingo Primary, Kuiseb Primary, Immanuel Ruiters, Narraville Primary, and !Nara Primary. The project manager of Bhubesi Pride Sofia Domingos said that she and her team of volunteers are pleased to be in the harbour town and she thanked the G4S team in Walvis Bay for making the day a success. Domingos added that BPF strives to unite communities through rugby by promoting the sport's values and life skills. It also empowers and up-skill local staff by nurturing female and

male community leaders, maximising sustainability and inspiring long-term developmental outcomes through tangible legacy projects alongside in-country partners. HR Director of G4S Namibia David Nuuyoma said that G4S Africa (a key player in the safety and security industry) identified Bhubesi Pride, who with their involvement and support, has made a marked, sustainable difference in the lives of children and the communities via a partnership which makes sustainable difference, address social skills and bringing communities together. Nuuyoma thanked the Bhubesi Pride team all the schools that participated and the management of Sparta United Recreation Club. We will be back next year and hope to heve more participating schools.
