Dramatic rescue of Humpback caught in ropes at oyster farm

Floris Steenkamp A spectacular rescue effort took place on Sunday of a Humpback whale which became entangled in ropes under the water at one of the oyster farms off Walvis Bay.
Crew of one of the work boats of Tide Water which is anchored nearby said they heard the whale in distress and called Vanessa Janse van Rensburg of Skeleton Coast Marine Launches. Janse van Rensburg made contact with Mr Alan Louw of Namib Marine and Diving Services who together with Steven and Toya Louw departed to where the
whale was in peril. The yacht Dream Chaser and a launch boat of Skeleton Coast Ma-rine Services was already at the scene. They saw ropes which keeps the oyster bags in place entangled around the whale's head. As the whale was totally submerged in the water and trying desperately to free itself, Steven Louw jumped into the water. He wore a wetsuit

and had his flippers and diving goggles with him. He could reach the whale and used a knife to cut it free from the ropes. “The successful rescue of the Humpback was a fantastic team effort and gratitude goes to everyone who assisted. Shortly afterwards, a friendly pelican landed on the boat and gave Steven a high five for rescuing the whale”, Toya Louw said.

An employee of Bank Windhoek was injured on Friday morning, when the mirror of a cash-in-transit van of G4S Securicor hit him as this van was reversing into an area to offload cash. The employee, whose name was not released, was briefly hospitalised and is now recovering at home from his injuries.
A Pakistani national and two Namibian women made a first appearance in the Walvis Bay magistrate's court yesterday on three charges of child trafficking. The two women, identified as Jerezuuka Beverley Kamongua and Melody Ortner, allegedly against a payment provided a sixteen-year-old girl to the Pakistani national for sex. He was identified as Khatri Sarhan.
It was understood the matter was reported to the Walvis Bay Police and is now under investigation. In rather bizarre incident also in Walvis Bay on Saturday morning an employee of a car wash in the cbd attempted to reverse and automatic Toyota Fortuner from the drying and polishing bay. It went horribly wrong. The man, identified as Simon Petrus, ended up reversing the Fortuner at high speed into the intersection of Hage Geingob Street and Rikumbi Kandanga Road, first crashing into a taxi and a stationery

According to Namibian Police spokesperson for Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Ikuuyu the Pakistani national has ties with import car dealership Jan Japan. The two women, one who works for Jan Japan, brought the girl to the Pakistani who allegedly forced her to have sex with him. He allegedly paid the women for bringing him the girl to sexually exploit. His alleged exploitation of the girl also resulted in two rape charges. The incidents on which the girl was allegedly sexually exploited happened between May and July this year. At the time of going to press yesterday, the three accused were still in court.

Petrus made a first appearance in the magistrate's court in Walvis Bay yesterday morning and faces charges of reckless and or negligent driving and driving a vehicle without a driving license. He possibly also faces a charge of malicious damage to property, as the damage he caused is estimated at more than N$750 000. He was granted bail of N$4 000 and must return to court on 4 September.

Passenger liner terminal ready in first months of 2019 A total of eighteen passenger liner dockings confirmed for November 2018 to November 2019 Construction of the passenger liner terminal in the port of Walvis Bay is expected to conclude by the end of this year. The first passenger liners will however, only tie up alongside after the first quarter of 2019 as a Rubhall relocatable tent will be erected near the terminal to serve as a passenger arrival- and departure hall. This latest development was confirmed yesterday by port engineer Elzevir Gelderbloem. The passenger liner terminal forms part of the container terminal on reclaimed land construction project currently carried out by China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC). According to Mr Gelderbloem most of the construction work on the container terminal project is scheduled to conclude early in 2019. Commissioning of the terminal is only expected to take place in the second half of 2019, when all services are installed on the container terminal. A total of eighteen passenger liners will call at the port of Walvis Bay between 9 November this year and 1 November 2019. A large number of these vessels will be accommodated at the passenger liner terminal by the expiry of the first quarter of 2019. In the meantime, Walvis Bay residents will also notice that the first of the four ship-to-shore cranes has been lit up since last week. All electrical installations are completed and the crane is quite remarkable to see at night with its vast network of lights turned on. The remaining three will follow the same route in the weeks to come, according to Mr Gelderbloem.

World's largest vehicle carrier here in August Four vehicle carrier ships are expected to call at Walvis Bay during August, to offload vehicles for Southern Africa's vast second-hand import vehicle market. On Thursday Hoegh Target is expected alongside, officially the largest vehicle carrying ship on the planet. More than 8 500 cars can be shipped and it has 14 decks and floors. The car docking area has a length of 200 meters and width of 36 meters. Hoegh Target is followed by Grand Orion on 10 August, Morning Cornet on 21 August and on 31 August Swan Ace.

Three vehicles damaged in an unprecedented incident by a car wash worker with no idea how to drive an automatic car. This happened this morning at 11:30, at a car wash opposite Woermann & Brock in Walvis Bay. The worker tried to reverse the car which came in for a wash, out of the driving bay, when he reversed into the intersection of Hage Geingob and Rikumbi Kandanga (13th road), slamming into two cars and a building, before going forward, back over the intersection towards the petrol pumps where he came to a standstill. NBA hosts Annual Awards The Namibia Bowling Association (NBA) once again hosted their Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday evening. At this event, the Association honours its bowlers, who have achieved outstanding results in the past year, as well as others who show promise and those who contribute to bowls in the way of service and sportsmanship. The categories, citations and the winners for 2018 are as follows: Most Promising Bowler – Huipie van Wyk, who shows enormous potential and is very committed to becoming a top class bowler and is humble on the green. Sportsmanship Award – Colin Peake, who is the accomplished sportsman as well as a gentleman, who is always willing to lend a hand and support his own as well as other clubs. Team of the Year – the African States Tournament (AST) 2017 Ladies team, consisting of Lesley Vermeulen, Sheena du Toit, Marietjie van den Bergh, Amanda Steenkamp and AnjuleenViljoen, who won Bronze in Fours, Gold in Singles and Pairs and Silver overall. 2018 Namibian Nationals Player of the Tournament 2018 Commonwealth Team Contribution to Bowls – Ellen Geyser, for serving on the NBA for 23 years in all capacities, but mainly in the all-important portfolio of Treasurer. At the same event, the National League results were announced. The league, which started in February this year, was played on a complete Round robin basis, with home and away games. Since there were 6 clubs participating, this meant that each club played ten games. Six points were awarded for a win and three for a draw. The last round was played in Windhoek on Saturday, with all clubs participating, including the two Coastal clubs: Rossmund and Namib Park. Clubs could elect to enter a Men's team, a Ladies' team and one or two Triples teams, depending on the number of their bowlers available. Unfortunately, Tsumeb Bowling Club did not enter the league, while Windhoek Bowling Club could not field a Men's team, so were not eligible for the Best Overall results. In the Men's Division, Transnamib Bowling Club came out on top with 33 points, with Rossmund in second place on 24 points. In the Ladies' Division, the Windhoek Bowling Club were victorious with 48 points. Runners-up were Eros Bowling Club on 36 points. Eros Bowling Club won both Triples divisions, Division 1 with 46 points and Division 2 with 48 points. Runners-up in these divisions were Namib Park (35 points) and Rossmund (45 points) respectively. The Overall winners of the National League, were Eros Bowling Club, with Rossmund second and Transnamib third. It was, once again, a very successful league season.
The Fifth Le Tour de Narraville Rudi Bowe Le Tour de Narraville was started by local philanthropist and cyclist Danny Beukes in 2013 and last Saturday was the fifth year that the event was hosted at the Uniting Reformed Church in Plein Street Narraville Walvis Bay. This year about 110 cyclists participated in a 65 kilometres, 25 kilometres and 10 kilometres cycle event with about 30 runners took part in the 10 kilometre run and a 5 kilometre walk. The main sponsors were again Marathon Sugar and Guans Packaging and some of the smaller business in the coastal town. Danny is extremely grateful to all who sponsored the event, the volunteers, participants, Walvis Bay Traffic Department,
the Narraville community and all the motorists which have always been mindful towards our cyclists and runners. The Walvis Bay Traffic Department comes out top when it comes to community engagement as they made sure that the cycling event, as well as 3 funerals was well coordinated. Safety first- Le Tour d' Narraville takes the safety of all participants very serious. We appreciate gestures from companies like Atlantic Oil Solutions very much.
