Henties Bay - Swakopmund blacktop road completed by 2018 - Roads Authority Erwin Leuschner The upgrade of the Swakopmund – Henties Bay - Uis road to bitumen standard is progressing well and set for completion in 2018. The upgrade of the Swakopmund – Henties Bay - Uis road is the first phase of construction of the road project which forms part of the Harambee Prosperity Plan. Once completed, motorists would be able to drive on a blacktop road from Walvis Bay to Angola via Ruacana. Currently the Construction of the project is on-going. The Contractor is currently busy with Earthworks (fill) on a 20km Section. To date, 12% of the overall works has been completed on the project. This was confirmed by Hileni Fillemon, the Manager of Corporate Communication at Roads Authority Namibia to namib times last week Friday. According to Fillemon the project commenced in January 2016, the construction period is 24 months and the envisaged completion date is March 2018. Late last year the Chief Executive Officer of the Roads Authority, Mr Conrad M. Lutombi during his visit to the Office of the Governor revealed that the first phase of the road project will be the construction of the Swakopmund - Henties Bay - Uis road, while the second phase of construction will be the Kamanjab - Khorixas - Uis road. Phase one is further sub-divided into two sections, namely: Section A: Swakopmund – Henties Bay (90km); Section B: Henties Bay – Uis (92km); Phase two is also further sub-divided into two sections: Section A: Kamanjab – Khorixas (105km); Section B: Khorixas – Uis (115km), which will cost the RA a total of N$558 million.

Regarding the above a meeting was held on 2 August 2016 with the Office of the Governor, Office of the Mayor and the acting Chief Executive Officer of Swakopmund. In the Agenda of the first Council meeting for 2017, it states that at the meeting it was decided that the Swakopmund Council gives the required piece of land to the Ministry free of charge. The central government will be responsible for the construction of services to the site though. The proposed site is reported to be outside of Swakopmund “proper” as there is no suitable land – of that size – located within the serviced area. While Council decided to donate land for the construction of a regional referral hospital, the required property for the expansion of the Tamariskia Clinic will still need to be bought. Busy Bodies turns 10 Off-road driving into the park becomes a habit

On Friday, 27 January Busy Bodies Montessori Pre-Primary celebrated their tenth (10 ) anniversary under the ownership of Sonja Loubser. During the celebration of the anniversary Sonja handed out certificates, as a token of appreciation to four of her staff members who have been with her since the beginning and who have been with her ten years. The children

enjoyed some pizza and Alwina Hoeses, Gisela Haslund, Mathias Ipiinge and Maria Kisting received certificates of appreciation and long service.

The staff members and the children gathered at their favourite lawn for a photo opportunity.

The community should familiarise themselves with the rules and regulations of the national parks before causing harm to the beautiful land scape and the indigenous animals living in the parks, especially the small animals that can't be seen from a far distance. The matter was postponed to 12 July for continuation of trial. The accused have been warned. Naambo Wilhelmina David (27) appeared on charges of murder read with the provisions of the domestic violence act, act 4 of 2003 and concealment of birth. The matter was postponed to 3 March for legal aid. The accused is out on bail of N$1500. Magistrate Court Alfred Noabeb (19) appeared on two counts of rape charges. The matter was postponed to 30 March for Prosecutor General's decision. The accused is on bail of N$5000. Rudolph Kamapuronga (20) appeared on charges of failure to ascertain damages and driving without a driving license. The matter was postponed to 14 February for other reason. Joschko-survivor to testify in July in Dippenaar trial Erwin Leuschner The murder trial against Jandré Dippenaar (34) is set to continue in July this year with the survivor, Antonia Joschko, to testify next in the high-profile case. The case was postponed in the Regional Court of Swakopmund on Friday to give the defence time to prepare. Antonia Joschko is set to give testimony of what transpired on 29 December 2014, when she lost her entire family in the horrific accident on the road between Swakopmund and Henties Bay. At the time she was 16 years old. She lost her father Markus Walter Helmut Joschko, mother Stephanie SchermuckJoschko and her sister Alexandra Marlene Joschko. The Joschko family was travelling towards Swakopmund in a Ford Ranger Pick-up when a head-on collision with a Toyota FJ Cruiser took place. Of the four occupants in the FJ Cruiser, only the driver Jandré Dippenaar survived, who is now facing various charges, including six counts of murder. The victims were JC Horn, Dinah Pretorius and Charlene Schoombee. Since the start of the high-profile case last week Antonia Joschko has been a regular in court waiting to give her testimony. Joschko flew in from Germany together with her lawyer and other family members. At the end of last week the state intended to call her into the witness stand, but Dippenaar's lawyer, advocate Louis Botes, objected. “The witness arrived unexpectedly and was not sub-poenaed to testify. As a result the defence stopped its preparation for this witness,” said Botes on Friday. He said that an expert from Johannesburg is required to be

present before Joschko can testify. “Attempts were made to bring the expert in, but he could not receive a work-permit and is not allowed into the country,” he said. “As a result we are not in a position to continue.” “It is indeed so that the defence needs to be prepared,” said Magistrate Gaynor Poulton. After state prosecutor Hezekiel Iipinge and Botes agreed on a new date, she postponed the matter. The case will continue on 12 July. Three days have been set down for the young Joschko witness. Once she has finished her testimony the case will continue again on 20 November with the state to call further witnesses. Once again two weeks have been set down for the continuation of the trial. Dippenaar, who is out on a warning, is facing a count of reckless or negligent driving, alternatively inconsiderate driving, a count of fraud, alternatively furnishing false information, a count of not being in possession of a driver's license and six counts of murder. It is the first time in the Namibian history that a person is facing murder charges in connection with a car accident. Since the start of the trial the family of members of the victims have been present in court throughout. It was an emotional rollercoaster as the witnesses gave testimony of what transpired on that fateful day.

Rotary Club of Swakopmund gives education a boost Erwin Leuschner Thanks to the Swakopmund Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Bad Homburg the Festus Gonteb School in Mondesa can now boast with brand-new windows along a block of classrooms. The old windows had become unsafe and irreparable. “Education is very much in the news and one school in Mondesa is doing its best to do what is needed to give a solid and lasting base to its learners,” the Swakopmund Rotary Club stated in a press release. It was Mr Abraham, the principal of Festus Gonteb, who reached out to the club. The wooden windows were almost 46 years old, and their hinges could no

longer hold onto the rotted wood frames. Dust and mist blew in and the windows sometimes fell out of their frames. The Swakopmund Rotary Club reached out to the Rotary Club of Bad Homburg for funding, and the funds were made available. “This is not the first time that the generous Bad Homburg Rotarians have supported education in

Swakopmund, showing the close connection between the two Rotary organizations,” the club states. Rotarian E. Krause, representing Bad Homburg, travelled to Namibia and was happy to see the good work done with the donation made by his club. “This good work also responds to the governments call to private enterprises to become

Swakopmund Women Soccer League kicked off for 2017 Sharlien Tjambari

The Swakopmund Women Soccer League kicked off on Saturday, 28 January with different women teams competing against each other. The games took place at the DRC soccer field while other games were played at Mondesa Sports Field and Hanganeni Park. African Queens was supposed to play the first match against Chelsea at DRC Soccer Field, but Chelsea Girls did not show up for the game and African Queens picked up two goals for Chelsea's no show. In the second match of the day at DRC Dragon City battled it out with African Queens and Dragon City beat African Queens with 6 goals to 0. At Mondesa Sports Field, Namib Daughters took free points when Kavetu (B) Football Club did not show up for the game. Namib Daughters performance on Saturday was very outstanding and they proofed to be the

champions of the day after they played their second match of the day against Kavetu (A) Football Club and Namib Daughters kicked Kavetu with 17 goals to 1. Namib Daughters took free points after Swakopmund Soccer Development Club (SSDC) did not show. Dream Team played against Chelsea Girls at Hanganeni Park and Dream Team won with 2 goals to zero. In their second match of the Day Dream Team played against African Queens and also won the match with 2-0 goals. Dragon City played with Kavetu (A) Football

Club in the last match of the day and Dragon City went home with 3 goals to zero. Dragon City is at the top of the league with 27 points, Dream Team second with 13 points, SSDC at third place with 12 points, Namib Daughters 9 points, African Queens 9 points, Kavetu FC (A) 4 points and Kavetu FC (B) 3 points and Chelsea Girls are at the bottom of the league with 0 points. Kavetu Football Club's meals and transport to come play in Swakopmund from Arandis was made possible by Charles Trading CC of Mr Charles Ndilokoshelwa and Uibasen Cleaning Service of Ms Emma Naoxas.

Karate takes its first step to Championship The Walvis Bay Karate Club had a fitness evaluation test on Thursday, 26 January. The team, assisted by Coach Leonard Martin, had been receiving a tremendous amount of training since December to keep themselves ready for trials, which will officially start on Saturday, 4 February, where all relevant candidates all over Namibia have a chance to demonstrate how fit they are. Selection for the national team will commence later this year between 25 and 26 June,where only qualified students will represent Namibia in the region 5 National Karate Championship in Mozambique, Maputo. They will also have to defend their title at the African

Championships in Cameroon and at Karate Commonwealth Games in South Africa (Durban). They participate in the controlling World Karate Federation, which is an overall control based on world control Olympic sport. The Namibian team are currently preparing youths for the 2020 Olympic Games, this however is a 4 year statistic plan which started about a year ago and the team looks forward to making Namibia proud.
