Piquet Jacobs Thanks to the vigilance of two customs officials at the Walvis Bay International Airport on Wednesday, a Nigerian national was found in possession of an undisclosed amount of undeclared United States Dollars after disembarking an inbound flight. At the time of press yesterday afternoon customs officials were in the process of determining the exact amount of money involved as well as the origin of the money. The matter was in the process of being reported to the Namibian Police at Walvis Bay and thus limited information was released in order to protect the integrity of the initial investigation. The suspect allegedly did not declare the money and could not provide sufficient answers to customs officials when interrogated. More details of the incident will be released as the investigation is unfolding.
Man who jumped off jetty had pregnant girlfriend The man who jumped off the Swakopmund jetty early on Sunday in an apparent suicide had a girlfriend expecting his child. The couple had an argument shortly before the man decided to end his life. The deceased is Shaun Haoseb. After the argument Hoaseb and a friend left the girl at home and walked to the jetty. They were both under the influence of alcohol. At the jetty Haoseb allegedly said to his friend: “look well after my girlfriend. He jumped into the sea. His body “remains unaccounted for.

The Walvis Bay Angling Club, the Walvis Bay Yacht Club and Oceans Restaurant have been given fourteen days by the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) to end sub-letting agreements with tenants who are running restaurants and bars on their respective premises. Namport in mid-June in an official letter said the above tenants have no right in terms of their rental contracts with Namport to sub-let. These entities are also not allowed without written approval from Namport to carry on any business not specifically stipulated in the original rental contracts.

“Where does one go if all doors are closed?” Sharlien Tjambari If you reach 77 years of age you should be retired and enjoy the remainder of your years in peace and quiet. Not Ouma Paulina !Gorases. The pensioner stays in a quaint shack in Swakopmund's DRC informal settlement, where she is raising her great-grandson - and she is barely coping. Now she pleads for assistance from anyone willing to help where they can. When namib times visited Ouma Paulina at her daughter's shack this week her home was empty. While waiting for her to come back, the reporter saw her walking up the street with her four-year old great grandson at her side. She was coming from Ann's Soup Kitchen where she got some food – her first meal in a while. Ouma Paulina is originally from Khorixas. She came to Swakopmund about two years ago because one of her grandchildren was ill. She came with a four-year old boy at her side, who she had to take from his birth mother. She is Ouma Paulina's granddaughter. “I took the boy because the mother does not take care of him properly and leaves him with complete strangers for weeks at a time when she goes on her drinking sprees”, she says. Her voice is hoarse. Old age has marred her. “My granddaughter never breastfed him properly. She would go out for days on end and the boy was suppose to be breastfed. That's when I decided to take the baby away from her and I have been raising him till this day”, she explains. The situation for Ouma Paulina is dire. She is suffering. She is tired – physically and mentally. You can see her hopelessness in her once sparkling eyes. “I really wish to go back home, but I need to register my great-grandson before I can even think about that,” she says. According to her the child was never registered at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration when he was born. He only holds a birth passport. “I have tried on many occasions to have my little one registered but I always get chased away. Even after I explained my situation to the officials, they tell me that the mother of the child is the one responsible for it,” she says. “I am a very old lady and ill. Sometimes I struggle to get out of bed and only manage to do so late in the day. I feel guilty as I need to feed my angel and make sure he is well,” she says amidst coughs. Her hands seem deformed by age. Arthritis has left its marks. And to top it off, she needs regular medication to keep her high blood pressure in check. “I want to give my boy only the best possible and I want to register him so he can find a place in a foster home. It's no easy decision, but I want to make sure he will be well taken care of once I am no longer here”, she says. A tear appears. While her situation has become so dire, she asked and pleaded with the mother of the child on several occasions to come to Swakopmund, to help, to register the boy. She does not seem to care. “What am I supposed to do? Who can I approach for help? What measures should I take?”. More questions than answers. She sounds desperate. While the mother shows no interest in her own child she managed to trace the father and plead for assistance. But the man, who lives in Swakopmund, denies any knowledge of the child nor does he want to help. Despite her desperate situation Ouma Paulina does not give up. Her greatgrandchild, Tommy, is very active and friendly. He walks up gleaming and welcomes this reporter with a warm hug. “Sometimes I am afraid that my boy will

But the time has come for Ouma Paulina to reach out for help. She cannot manage alone much longer. “Somewhere there is someone who knows what I should do or someone who has been in a similar situation as I am. Where must I go when all the doors are closed? Who can help me?” she asks. Ouma Paulina pleads for assistance. She asks for old clothes for her and the child, food and anything people are willing to part with. Toys are a luxury she can't afford. Henties Bay/Uis-Road upgrade expected to commence soon Erwin Leuschner
The upgrade of the 96 kilometer stretch of road between Henties Bay and Uis to bitumen standard is expected to commence in July this year. This forms part of Phase 2 of the road upgrade from Swakopmund to Kamanjab, explained the Governor of Erongo Clr. Cleophas Mutjavikua during his State of the Region Address. According to Clr. Mutjavikua the road upgrade of the C34 (MR 44) between Swakopmund and Henties Bay is progressing well. The upgrade to bitumen standard of the 90 kilometer stretch commenced a few months ago and is expected to be completed within 28 months from the start of the construction period. This section forms part of Phase 1 of the upgrade of the route leading to Kamanjab via Khorixas. Another significant road upgrade expected to commence in the next month is the MR44 & MR36 to freeway standard. The 20 kilometer stretch will be upgraded to freeway standard and will lead from farm 58 up to the Walvis Bay traffic circle. At the same time the upgrade of the road-over-rail-bridge at Swakopmund (Trunk road 2/2) is also expected to commence in July. Clr. Mutjavikua also explained that the road upgrade of the MR44 and MR36 to freeway standard – both roads lead from Walvis Bay towards Swakopmund – are progressing well. Phase 1 of the upgrade includes Trunk road 2/2 up to Farm 58. The total construction period is expected to last 36 months.
Close to 6000 serious cases reported at NamPol in Erongo Sharlien Tjambari
A total of 5 798 serious crimes were reported to the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region in the time period January 2015 and December 2016. This figure was released by the Governor of Erongo Region, Clr. Cleophas Mutjavikua recently during his State of the Region Address. A total of 133 of these cases were rape cases. According to the Governor, during 2016 a total of 545 cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm were reported. This represents a small decrease in these cases down from 567 in 2015 when 567 cases were reported. Drug-related cases increased from 127 cases in 2015 to 150 in 2016. The total number of robberies also increased from 164 in 2015 to 179 in 2016. The amount of culpable homicide cases dropped to 37 (2016) from 52 which reported in 2015.
Cases of stock theft numbered a total of 135 in 2016. This was less than in 2015 (199). Theft from motor vehicles increased from 161 in 2015 to 169 in 2016. The report by the Governor suggests a drastic decrease in the housebreaking and theft cases which were 1040 in 2015 and had decreased to 879 in 2016. The number of fraud cases increased from 240 in 2015 to 295 in 2016. In 2015, a total of 333 cases of domestic violence

Desert Rose environmental study submitted to MET Erwin Leuschner
The Desert Rose development on a large portion of land located in the Dorob National Park between Swakopmund and Long Beach is in full swing. This was announced by Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua, during his recent State of the Region Address (SOTR). “The Project is in full swing, despite resistance from some environmentalists and concerned groups,” Mutjavikua said. Mutjavikua was talking about various investments and some future developments in the region - he also briefly mentioned Desert Rose. “The final environmental impact assessment and scoping report had been submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism for approval,” he said. Adding: “The project is expected to create 5 000 job opportunities in the first five years and secure a major international investment for Namibia. The total direct and indirect jobs alone will be 1617 by 2021,” the Governor
explained. The governor added that Desert Rose will further “provide opportunity to involve SME's and enhance governmentprivate sector relations”. “Desert Rose will contribute to tax revenues exceeding N$663 million by 2021”, he noted. Clr. Mutjavikua did not mention a time frame as to when the development is expected to commence. Desert Rose has featured prominently in the media since May 2014. The development is also known as the “Desert Rose International Convention and Exhibition Centre” and – according to the EIA – entails a “urban node to be developed on approximately 418ha of virgin land located
between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.” Although the project is welcomed for its economic value, there are concern among environmentalists about the project, due to Damara Tern breeding area in close proximity. This near-endemic seabird bird species is listed as near-threaten e d , n e a r- e n d e m i c seabird. Although the importance of the breeding area is acknowledged in the report, it is also s t a t e d t h a t l a rg e r breeding colonies are located towards the north east of the project area, at the Horse Graveyard site. Open spaces at strategic locations within the development to create flight paths to the Horse Graveyard site has
been incorporated into the design. Besides a convention and exhibition centre the
development will further entail “many facilities in order to make it both feasible and user
friendly, such as more hotels and entertainment activities, shopping Centre, office parks, restaurants, low- and
high-density accommodation, residential properties, a golf course and public beaches.

Cars collide at intersection Piquet Jacobs
Four people were treated for minor and less serious injuries respectively, after being involved in an accident at the intersection of 6th street and 10th road involving a taxi and a pick-up on Monday afternoon. It is alleged that one of the vehicles was speeding when the second turned in front of it at the intersection. The four occupants received treatment at the scene before all were transported to the Walvis Bay Sate Hospital and the Welwitschia Hospital.

Shikomba sings praises to Kraatz Internship Program Apart from its 'Learn-to-weld' program - which falls under its Welding School - and the annual intake of Namibia Institute of Mining & Technology (NIMT) students on board its internship program, Kraatz – a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group - last year opened its doors to Engineering students of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) to undergo an internship program at the company, as part of its contribution to skills development in Namibia. Iyambo Erastus Shikomba – a 24-year old 4th year engineering student at NUST - is no exception to the many Namibian students who require internship and onthe-job training opportunities, in order to gain the necessary experience and expertise to be ready for the job market. Shikomba is also one of the first intakes to this internship platform for NUST Engineering students, and can only sing praises about his experience thus far. Shikomba: “Born and raised in Windhoek, I have always had this inherent desire to be an engineer which caused me to pursue a B-tech Degree in Mechanical Engineering at NUST. Fascinated by the intricacies of machines and structures, I remember from an early age I would disassemble and assemble electrical appliances at home, much to the annoyance of my family. The past 9 months at Kraatz has been nothing short of amazing and although my internship ends on the 31st of October, I am hopeful to continue my journey here at Kraatz in order to grow myself even further and make a positive contribution not only to the company, but also my family, community and country.”Kraatz Human Capital Manager, Roberto January says Kraatz creates these opportunities in light of government's Vision 2030 and the President's Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP), by providing opportunity for skills development, thus contributing to curbing the high unemployment rate and eradicating poverty. On the commercial side I was given the opportunity to deal with Estimations that enabled me to engage with various clients and suppliers in the engineering sector. I was very fortunate to have gained this opportunity to showcase my abilities as well as to grow myself at one of the biggest engineering companies in Namibia. 617 Youth in Erongo trained in 2016 in basic entrepreneurship Sharlien Tjambari

building where they will set up their bakery is yet to be connected to the electricity network. A major boost for the program is the Erongo Development Fund's (EDF's) micro credit scheme. This scheme was initiated through jointsupport of the Rössing Foundation, the Erongo Regional Council and Bank Windhoek. The purpose of the credit scheme is to provide affordable finance to small businesses in the Erongo region. The Scheme thus far assisted close to 65 beneficiaries. The success rate of repayment of the loans is close to 85%. According to Mutjavikua the risk of default is
In 2016, the National Youth Council (NYC) through the Erongo Regional Council successfully trained 72 unemployed youth from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay in basic entrepreneurship. This was announced by the Governor of Erongo, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua in his recent state of the region address (SORA). A total of 617 unemployed youth throughout Erongo received training. The beneficiaries received basic management training, received loan assistance, monitoring and evaluation as well as aftercare services. After the successful completion of the course a total of 431 trainees received soft loans as start-up capital, to create employment opportunities for themselves and for their fellow youth. The total of the loans amounted to N$1 384 12200. The Governor noted that the training program has yielded impressive results. One good example is the Okombahe Youth Bakery, an idea developed by ten unemployed young residents of the settlement. They registered a cooperative. The project staff received training from Namib Mills in Windhoek on know how of baking and running a bakery successfully. The project was made possible by assistance from the NYC to the value of N$200 000. This project plans to employ seven young people and will become operational soon. The

shared in the following manner: 60% by EDF, 30% by Bank Windhoek and 10% by the beneficiary. “Currently the Fund has selected 70 beneficiaries (10 per constituency) with the approximate value being N$750 000. An overall of 60% are allocated to women and young people”, said Mutjavikua. Once successful, a beneficiary has to pay the loan back within two years while the EDF conduct regular visits
to assist them with challenges. The beneficiaries also receive a percentage refund of the original loan if they pay back the loan without default (“incentive to pay back”). The beneficiaries each receive a certificate of completion if all funds are repaid and provides them with a platform to build their credibility with financial institutions.

Man that jumped off Swakopmund snake park owner jetty still missing survives black mamba bite
Thanks to the quick response by medics from E-Med Rescue 24, Dr Wolfgang Tietz; snake expert, Dr Christo Buys, and the nur-ses at The Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund, Stuart Hebbard, of the local snake park made a quick recovery after being bitten by a black mamba over the weekend, one of Namibia's most venomous snakes. The incident happened at the snake park on Saturday afternoon. “I was feeding the snakes and put a rat into the cage,” Hebbard explained to namib times yesterday. As is his usual routine, Hebbard made sure it was safe to open the cage when he put in the rat. The glass box, where this particular, three meter long mamba is housed, is located quite high. Two baby boys die at the hands of their own mothers Two baby boys died at the coast in the past few days, at the hands of their own mothers. In the first incident last Thursday, a 40-year old mother placed her newborn baby boy in a plastic bag and placed him in a dustbin at Walvis Bay. The mother later admitted to staff at the Walvis Bay State Hospital what she had done. It was too late for the infant. The boy had already died. In a second incident on Friday, a 28-year old woman has been arrested on a charge of child neglect after she allegedly locked her eight months old baby in her shack and left the child unattended for an entire day, resulting in the death of the baby boy. At the time of going to press yesterday evening the search continued for Shaun Haoseb who allegedly jumped off the Swakopmund jetty at around 04:00 on Sunday in what is believed to have been a suicide. It is believed Haoseb drowned. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, it is alleged Haoseb [age unknown], in the hours before his apparent suicide, had a quarrel with his girlfriend. He went to the Swakopmund jetty with a friend. Both were under the influence of alcohol. According to this friend, Haoseb allegedly walked to the tip of the jetty and jumped into the ocean. Friend complains of “weakness in legs” and is found dead two days later Death incident report, Otjimbingwe: A partially decomposed body, identified as that of Erastus Ndjebela, 33-years old, was found on Saturday, 24 June at about 19:00. A passer by made the discovery near the D1976 road, about 10 km from Otjimbingwe towards the C-32 road. The police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu who confirmed the incident explained the deceased was employed as a herder at Farm Tsaobis, which is about 15 km west of Otjimbingwe Resettlement. It is alleged that on Thursday, 22 June, in the late afternoon, Ndjebela and his friend, also employed as a farm worker at a neighbouring farm, decided to walk from Farm Tsaobis to Otjimbingwe Resettlement. They were heavily under the influence of alcohol. Narraville born Zhivago Groenewald huge in Cricket Zhivago Groenewald was born on 8 June 1993 in Walvis Bay. He was one of three boys. His one brother also plays cricket and rugby and the younger one is playing rugby in Durban for the under 21 team of the Sharks. Also for the university that he is attending. As a youngster he and his brother played cricket at an open space near his parent's house in Narraville. Mr John Heyns stopped and ask if they would like to play club cricket. The rest was is history. At the age of nine he was selected to play for the Namibian under 13 schools team in Botswana [Zone 6]. Aged 13 he had to choose between cricket and rugby. At the age of 13 he was selected for both the under 15 cricket and under 13 schools national teams. As the dates of both tournaments coincided he had to make the choice. UNAM to commence on lagoon assessment Piquet Jacobs The University of Namibia recently hosted a stakeholder's workshop regarding t h e t h re e - y e a r research on the assessment of ecosystem health status and biodiversity of the Walvis Bay Lagoon in collaboration with the Municipality of Walvis Bay and the Namibia Ports Authority. Due to public concern fuelled by rapid coastal development in the area sparked the need for assessment of the lagoon. The project is aimed at developing a monitoring program that will enable the protection of its precious aquatic life. The research was planned in line with assessing the status of physical and chemical conditions, as well as the status of biological communities and determining the environmental and biological indicators of the health status of the lagoon. The workshop which was aimed at involving all stakeholders, and giving a chance of interaction was themed 'toward achieving the balance between the lagoon preservation and coastal developments'.

Deutscher Büttenabend 2017: Büttenredner strapazieren die Lachmuskeln Dass alles so gut zusammenpasst und das Programm derart reibungslos klappt, haben sich die KüskaOrganisatoren bestimmt selbst nicht gedacht. Erneut haben die Aktiven des Swakopmunder Karnevals (Küska) die Messlatte hoch angesetzt und die Erwartungen vieler Besucher weitaus übertroffen. Mit Innovation, viel Mühe und harter Arbeit wurde am vergangenen Donnerstag wieder ein besonders einfallsreiches, ausgeklügeltes Programm auf die Beine gestellt. Auch wenn das Eintrittsgeld dieses Mal mehr betrug, war es die Show im Haus der Jugend (HdJ) jeden Cent wert. Wie gewohnt waren es nach dem gut einstudierten Tanz der Prinzengarde die beiden Hohheiten selbst, die zum Beginn des Programms zum Mikrofon griffen. Schnell hatten Prinz Heinzi I. mit der geheimnisvollen Tasche (Schulte) und Prinzessin Jenny I., die ohne Ende (Meyer), das Publikum auf ihrer Seite, als sie verschiedene Ereignisse in/aus der Region ansprachen. Bei einem Thema waren sich die beiden sicher: Ein deutsches „Vintage“ muss her, wo man auch zu deutscher Musik „lekker sokkien“ kann.
Dass es in Swakopmund viel (Bühnen)Talent gibt, wurde an dem Abend deutlich. Gleich drei Büttenredner feierten ihre Premiere auf der Bühne. Darunter zählt auch Elferratsmitglied Matthias Henrichsen, der zwar schon einmal in der Bütt stand, aber an jenem Abend die Aufgabe als Chefs vom Protokoll übernommen hatte. Wie erwartet sprach er sämtlich politische Themen an. Von Namibia-Themen ging er auf das Donald Trumps Toupee und seine mysteriöse „covfefe“-Botschaft ein. Seine Rede wurde mit begeistertem Applaus bedacht. Danach feierten Holger Kleyenstüber, ExPrinz Erik Henrichsen und Siggi Herholdt ihr Debut in der Bütt. Kleyenstüber sang eine "neue" Version eines Toten Hosen-Hits: "An Tagen wie diesen, wünsch’ ich mir mehr Geld und Zeit (...)

Nun feierte Herholdt seine Premiere. In der Bütt war er als Geheimagent nach Namibia angereist und musste verschiedene Personen untersuchen, auch in Swakopmund. Dort war seine Aufgabe die folgende: “Ein BackgroundCheck brachte mich hierhin, ein gestandener Prinz, er hofft, er ersetzt bald die Bürgermeisterin. Ein Inselbesitzer vom Grünenwald, ein Geschäftsheld, mit S..... verdient er sein Geld." Auch Herholdts ausgeklügelte Bütt wurde mit einer Rakete gewürdigt. Besonders war auch die Bütt von Henrichsen, der als Radfahrer zum ersten Mal den Desert Dash fuhr. Wenig später trat Nico Prinsloo in die Bütt - er erinnerte an die gute, alte Zeit, als es noch Stress zwischen Betamax und VHS gab. Zu den Rednern von außerhalb war erneut Harald Hecht mit seinem Wikapedia-Spiegel vom Windhoeker Karneval dabei: "Als närrischer Wikapede gab ich neulich 'Wo liegt eigentlich Windhoek' bei Wikapedia ein und ich war überrascht und denke, das darf doch wohl nicht war sein. Denn ich stieß auf den unerwarteten Fund, nämlich das Brauhaus von Swakopmund." Mit seinem Spruch "Es trinkt der Mensch, es säuft das Pferd, in Swakopmund ist das umgekehrt" trat Horst Heiser als Alois Flatterflügel in die Bütt.
Für ihn hat es als Pilot nicht geklappt, daher legte er sich eine Drone zu, mit der er Swakopmund erkundete. Er flog auch (natürlich) zum SFC über das Altersheim. "Ich sag's euch, ich hab's selber gesehen, hinter der letzten Wohnung eine einsame Banke stehen. Ach wie gut, dass niemand weiß, da macht der Opi die Omi heiß." Auch Heisers Bütt wurde mit einer jubelnden Rakete belohnt. Den golden Abschluss feierte allerdings ein Bühnen-Stück, vorgeführt von den KüskikaDamen. Derweil die Damen das Rumpelstizchen-Märchen aufführten, erzählte "Hunta" (Pierre Werner) die Geschichte dazu. Diese heiratete statt dem König den "Finance Minister". Das ganze wurde mit passenden Musikeinlagen umrahmt und sorgte für ein einfallsreiches Stück mit viel Gelächter in der gesamten Narrhalle. Insgesamt verdienen die Karnevalsmitglieder ein großes Lob, da der Küska beim Büttenabend die ohnehin hohe Messlatte weiter in die Höhe geschraubt hat. Erwin Leuschner

Dieses salopp weitergesponnene Motto des Küstenkarnevals 2017 ,,Ach wie gut, dass niemand weiss” soll die Stimmung des deutschen Büttenabends vergangene Woche Donnerstag im Haus der Jugend unbefangen wiedergeben. Dort ging es nämlich ebenso ungeniert und jeckenartig-leutselig zu, wie es sich für einen Karneval gehört. Die Atmosphäre war

Matthias Henrichsen war zum ersten Mal als Chef vom Protokoll in der Bütt. Er selbst bezeichnete sich als Hofnarr.
Wie gewohnt gab es einen Augenschmaus - der Tanz der Prinzengarde wurde von Netti Wiemann einstudiert. Tu n a c o r Fisheries has just emphasised their dedication towards its employees as well as to corporate and social responsibility, by acquiring their own
bus fleet, to be commissioned as from 1 July. Six new Volkswagen 17.210 Explorer buses were supplied by Autohaus Truck & Bus and officially handed over on Wednesday, 21 June, at the Tunacor yard in Walvis Bay. Apart from being a cost-effective move, the new fleet also means new job creation. A new subsidiary under the group will manage the entire fleet,
employing eight new bus drivers and additional logistical staff for this new venture. On a rather misty morning, Ernest Thatcher from Autohaus Truck & Bus handed over the keys to Shalako Solomons and Stephan Haenisch from Tunacor Fisheries. The group is taking responsibility to a new level by ensuring safe and secure transport for all staff to and from the factories.
The new buses may very well be commuter specific, but attention was given to finer details like comfortable seating and a Radio/ CD system with speakers to entertain staff on their daily trips. To top it all off, the bus fleet was ordered with additional service plans for each unit, ensuring proper and efficient operation at all times. Advanced tracking and monitoring was
also added to the package, furthermore expressing their concern for the staff and vehicles. Tunacor however still sees a bigger picture than just the company itself. Understanding the current financial restraints the education system faces at the moment and proving their dedication toward the local community and social responsibilities, they also plan to make these buses available to
assist schools in town with transportation for special events from time to time. The new fleet was officially inaugurated over the past weekend, whereby staff members were transported to
Hero's Acre in Windhoek, to attend the funeral proceedings of the late Hon Mr Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, Namibian hero and up to date of his passing, Chairman of the Tunacor group.

Kickboxers made Namibia proud again Three Namibian kickboxers, Julian Müller (21), Delano Müller (13) and Lesley! Hoaeb (25), from the Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay represented Namibia at the 49th Battle of Atlanta World Championships in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) on 16 and 17 June. The trio has made the Namibia Kickboxing Federation and the Namibian Nation proud. They each won gold medals in their categories and thus returned to Namibia as World Champions in Ring Contact Fighting Arts International (RCFAI).

Dinolo Super Netball Tournament Launched in Khomas Region
Julian Müller beat Reimert van Zyl (SA) in the light middle weight category, black belt division. Lesley Hoaeb beat Johannes Gottwald (Germany) in the light welter weight category, black belt division. Delano Müller beat Daniel Cuervo (USA) black belt division. The trio made a huge impact at the Battle of Atlanta and might return to Atlanta to defend their titles. The Namibian team expressed their joy and gratitude towards the World President of RCFAI, Master Joe Viljoen & and the Namibian Nation for the support and opportunities they had been given. The Namibians excelled and it had been an awesome event and a wonderful experience. The
Battle of Atlanta will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. The Namibian team will be in action at the SubSaharan Title Battle that will be held on 7 October in Walvis Bay. Titled Desert Storm 1, it will be hosted by the Namibia Kickboxing Federation. Julian, Delano & Lesley are to fight in these title fights and the all RCFAI & Kickboxing clubs in Namibia are invited as well. Countries to which invitation went out are: Angola, South Africa, USA, Reunion, Zimbabwe and Germany. This will be a milestone for Namibian Kickboxing as it will be the first ever of its kind event.

All companies big or small do have a social responsibility towards our youth and senior sports persons in the country - in particular Erongo Region. The wealthiest companies are in the Erongo region and still the sports clubs and codes are struggling financially in the region. Most of the sport codes cannot perform as they would like to, and the reason for this is finances. Some sports codes and clubs’ finances come from the management and players’ salaries. In some instances a club’s finances comes from one household. When young boys and girls are selected to represent the country, their parents and federations need to run around to get funds. Just recently, the young Brave Warriors team of the country needed to go and defend the Cosafa Cup, but there was no money. Some sports teams do very well in their respective leagues without any sponsors. Just imagine how these clubs and individual sports persons could perform if there were sponsors. What is there to lose for these companies? Nothing! Apart from the sponsor’s name and brand known to the world, these entities can write these sponsorships off against income tax. This will all in all be a winwin situation. Some companies don’t want to sponsor sport, as some sports persons use the money
for their own benefits. Let us all come forward and create a better future for sports in the country. We all need to start trust one another. Companies and the sports persons need to take hands to make it bigger and better. Some sport codes did not participate in international events for years; all as a result of a lack of funds. Look at the poor performance of our netball team at the African Championships. This is for not playing international games and the sole reason for this is lack of finances. What if all fishing, mining and all the businesses come together and start a sport trust for all the sport codes and clubs in the Erongo Region? The trust can then provide sponsorships to all. I know that this can be done and that it can work. The persons that will manage the trust must be trustworthy and honest. To all the businesses in the Erongo Region: let's start to GIVE let's help our sport codes and clubs and in doing so we can become the best sport region in the country.

Namibia, Botswana and Malawi were the only countries that were represented at the third edition of the AUSC Region 5 marathon. Olympic Day. NSC and NNOC jointly hosted the event in Swakopmund. The organisers believe this marathon can be as big as the Boston, London and other big marathons in the world. This however, can only happen if all the Region 5 countries participate in this event every year. Some of the countries that did not turn up for the event are regularly sending athletes to compete in events globally. This was the main concern of Dr Vetumbuavi Veii, President of Region 5. Veii felt countries have money to go to the Olympics, Commonwealth and other international events, but for events in their own region there is no money. This event is to celebrate, Africa and Olympic Day in Africa for Africans. At the same event Sports Minister Jerry Ekandjo’s message was relayed through the director of sport, Mr. Edelberth Katamba. He urged Namibian sportsmen- and women to take podium performance programmes serious, in preparation of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2020 Olympic Games. The Minister also thanked all the sponsors: Quiver Oil & Gas, OTB Sport, Old Mutual, Coca Cola Namibia, XCO Sport Namibia, MTC and Galaxy that come on board. He said without them the day would not have had the desired impact.
More than 30 men and women athletes took part in the marathon and more then 20 youth including Paralympic athletes registered for the track events. The marathon was won by Erich Goeieman from the Road Runner Club in Walvis Bay. The most exciting event for the Namibian teams was no doubt the game of the U12's fighting it out for the bronze medal in the Squirts Club Division. The team went into the game exited and also very confident, against a team from California, The Terminators. Team Namibia was controlling the puck and playing a good game, having scouted the team during previous games and evaluated tactics. Six min into the game (games being played at 2 x 12min with stop time) however, the Terminators scored, putting even more pressure on the Namibian team, who kept going, trying to score getting the puck past the Terminator goalie. After halftime, Namibia retaliated with Josua Zeferino scoring, assisted by JW Coetzee. 1:1 on the scoreboard and things got exited, causing 2 seperate penalties for Namibia and another two goals scored by the Terminators, who certainly made use of their advantage and powerplay. 1:3 down was not what the Namibians were expecting, thus the pressure was put on their opponents, the puck being passed and shot in their efforts to score. With one minute 12 seconds remaining, Luca Mentzel finally scored for Namibia, which could unfortunately not hold up the clock, nor equal the score. Thus, the bronze medal slipped through
having been able to participate at NARCh and winning a lot in experience and friendships.With the U12 Squirts Competition now concluded, the team nevertheless had to proceed with their round-robin games in the PeeWee(U14)Silver/Club division.An excellent game was played against the Pamma Cyclones Blue from California. This game was played prior to the bronze medal finals game described above, and the team played very consistent and concentrating on team play. One would think that the players were getting their minds set on the bronze medal game, whilst playing on Rink 3 against the Pamma Cyclones, who went into half time leading 1:0 over Namibia. The Pamma Cyclones scored again 4min33secs into the second period, and keeping that lead for the rest of the game, whilst Namibia missed many good goal scoring chances. Virtually in the last second of the game Josua Zeferino scored a goal for Namibia, assisted by Luca Mentzel, putting down a good score of 1:2 Later in the evening, the Namibian team faced their final round-robin opponent in the PeeWee Silver/Club division, the HB Militia White Team from California. Probably not having lived down their loss of the bronze medal game, the
President of AUSC Region 5, Dr. Veii team struggles to score at all, and whilst playing consistent and hard to keep their opponents at bay, the HB Militia's scored 8 goals, with Namibia ending up with no score for themselves, making it Namibia 0:8 HB Militia Whites.The final standings in the PeeWee Silver/Club Division thus sees Team Namibia in 12th and last seeded position with zero points (3 games played and lost) and they are going to the next round playing against the 9th seeded Konixx Outcasts on Thursday. The U10 team:The Namibian U10 team started in the U10 preliminaries Mite Silver/Club division facing their own size and skills, maybe even being too strong for this division, as the team beat their first opponent, the San Jose Inline Sharks by 8:2, with goals being scored by Corinna Weimann(2), Theo Borstlap, Noel Nambahu, Christine Roettcher, Eagan Maritz and Tomas Gutierez-Mayo. The second game was played against the Bulldogs White from California, which ended up 9:1 in Namibia's favour with half of the team being successful scorers. Once again, our goal tender Michelle Wirtz did great in goals. The Namibian U10 team will be completing their round robin games on Thursday, where after they will proceed to the Mite Silver Playoffs.
