40 Schoolgirl Pregnancies Missing Person Reports in Six Months Alarming in Erongo ·31 Cases of Dealing/in Possession of Drugs at Schools Marshallino Beukes

The escalation of missing person reports countrywide, but especially in the Erongo region are of grave concern to the public, as well as the police. Almost every week pictures of missing persons are circulated on social media, with most of these cases being reported in the Erongo region. “We are concerned. We have seen a serious increase in missing persons reported in the region. At the moment we have two elderly persons mistotal of 109 learner pregnancies (Swakopmund circuit 25, Walvis Bay circuit 65 and Omaruru circuit 19). Ms Stephanus further expressed her distress regarding the escalation of dealing and using of drugs at schools. As per statistics provided by Ms Stephanus, last year saw a total of 25 drug related cases reported at schools in the Erongo region.

Twelve of these cases were reported at the Swakopmund circuit, where four boys and one girl were reported at three different high schools. Seven boys at one primary school were found in possession of drugs during a search exercise. At Walvis Bay, seven male and three female learners were reported at two primary schools and one high school, while Continues on page 2

The Director of Education in the Erongo region, Ms Ernfriede Stephanus, announced that schools in the region have reported a total of 40 learner pregnancies for the first school trimester of this year.

She made this alarming statement at a community meeting at Immannuel Ruiters Primary school in Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay recently. According to Ms Stephanus, twelve of these cases were reported by the Swakopmund circuit, five by the Walvis Bay circuit and twentythree by the Omaruru circuit.
