For the 48 341 learners and 1 799 teachers in the Erongo Region, the immediate future remains uncertain. The end of the Covid-19 lockdown and the resumption of contact schooling could still be a long way off. The regional director of education, Ms Ernfriede Stephanus, said at the Governor's weekly Covid19 news conference the lockdown and shutting of schools have had a negative impact on teaching, learning, assessments and examinations for many learners. On 15th March this year the region was ordered the immediate closure of schools to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. As it became clear the lockdown would be extended beyond the initial date of The regional educational directorate held two meetings where guidelines for inputs from stakeholders were received and the inputs from teachers and principals were consolidated. The questions facing educators were what should happen should schools open and what the way

To keep social distance if schools reopen, it is suggested that teachers meet in smaller groups and that Grade 9, 11 and 12 learners be divided into smaller groups. “The biggest challenge is the health and safety of every learner and staff member at all levels. This includes social distancing vis-à-vis overcrowded classrooms will be an overall challenge; schools with platoon systems facing the biggest challenges. “Online teaching during the lockdown will be a challenge since there is a lack of ICT facilities at some homes, especially learners in remote areas will be disadvantage and it will compromise access to education. “The majority of our learners live in poor socio-economic conditions in urban and rural areas and most of their parents are unemployed. Thus, most of parents have no smart phones with WhatsApp and zoom applications, no access to Wi-Fi connectivity and some even struggle to charge their phones regularly,” Stephanus said. Assessment and examination: assessment can be done through assignments using above-mention methods; only year-end examination can be done for Grade 9, 11 and 12. Modalities can be smaller groups in class rooms with more invigilators and the Pro-ED Private school with 30 learners in grade 12 requested to be allowed to write examination under administration and supervision of IEB as they have spaces available for 1000 seats. SCHOOL RE-OPENING AND FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS: the further lock down from 17 April 2020 to 5 May 2020 was announced but the holiday for teachers and learners was over and teaching and learning should take place from home staring 20 April 2020.Thus, the suggestion/introduction of distance teaching and learning through different modes. With the lock down extended and the uncertainty of when they will report back the Ministry directed these bags must be distributed to vulnerable children who are beneficiaries of the Namibian School Feeding Program, in collaboration with the office of the regional Governor,” she concluded.

Port of Walvis Bay geared to handle large cargo ships

The largest ever container vessel to call at Walvis Bay, Maersk Sheerness, docked in the port of Walvis Bay on 24 April. Maersk Sheerness can carry 9 000 twenty feet freight containers. The has as a total length of 335 meters and docked at the new container terminal. “It is of great significance, not only to the Ports Authority but to the entire country. This is not only consistent with our values and drive to becoming Africa's number one port authority, but also places Namibia in a more competitive position by proving we can accommodate and handle bigger vessels”, Namport stated. Adding, the shipping industry worldwide is switching to mega ships with larger load capacities in order to increase cargo volumes per ship, increased efficiency and shrinking fleet numbers. “This aims to save operational cost and consolidating resources”, reads a statement. Namport is geared to accommodate this paradigm shift. The new container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay can accommodate the larger vessels and ship-to-shore cranes can maintain short turnaround times. The container terminal was inaugurated in 2019 and was completed at a total cost of N$4 billion. The huge investment is also given momentum by the parallel development of Namport's human resources capacity to be able to maximise production outputs. Plans to bring Maersk Sheerness started mid-2019. “It is indeed a historic achievement which is worthy of a celebration”, concludes the statement.

Mondesa woman dies in her sleep Sharlien Tjambari
A Mondesa family is in mourning, after a 30-year-old woman unexpected died in her sleep in her parent's home on 23 April. The deceased's mother found the body. According to police reports the woman, identified as Cashandra Aranza Swartz went to sleep and her mother later went to wake her. The mother tried to wake her daughter, but to her horror discovered she had died. The late Swartz was staying with her parents permanently and had no known health issues.
Farmer dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head Sharlien Tjambari A 66-year-old woman living on a farm near Omaruru took her own life in the short time frame her husband left the homestead to take the couple's dogs for a walk. Magdalena Francina Lang (66) ended her life with a 9mm pistol, registered in her husband's name. The incident took place at the farm Okapekaha, 10 km from Omaruru on the main road to Kalkfeld. The deceased is believed to have left a suicide note. According to the Namibian Police's regional crime investigation coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the husband found his wife in a pool of blood with a single gunshot wound to the head. She was already deceased at the time she was found.
Corrupt police officer free on bail Moses Naseb (54), the Namibian police officer arrested recently by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on corruption charges, was released on bail of N$5000. Naseb will make a next court appearance on 29 May. Naseb tried to bribe a member of the public requesting the delivery of a sheep carcass to his home, in exchange for his silence on an alleged traffic violation. Naseb's intended victim instead notified the ACC, leading to a sting operation and his arrest.
Namport’s Acting Chief Executive, Kavin Harry, earlier this week during a national panel discussion said the port authority’s operational capacity has shrunk by an estimated 50 % in the wake of the Coronavirus lockdown. Cargo volumes at sea have taken a knock globally and ports worldwide feel the pinch. Operational planners’ biggest headache at the moment though is not only confined to keep the business afloat but also to prepare for a potential bottleneck should trade flows resume worldwide to saturate severely depleted markets.

Namibia managed to contain the number of Covid-19 patients testing positive to 16 due to quick and drastic measures put in place by Government. This was the answer given by the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Esther Munjangue, to a question posed at the daily Covid-19 news briefing broadcast on NBC on Tuesday. “Namibia acted very quickly. On 17 March this year President Hage Geingob declared a state of emergency, this was only three days after the first cases of Covid-19 were reported in Namibia. Ten days later on 27 March the Erongo and Khomas Regions went
into lockdown,” Munjangue said. All entry points and borders were also closed for local and international travel and everyone coming back into the country was placed under mandatory quarantine for 14 days. While returning Namibians were under quarantine they were strictly monitored as were those confirmed cases who were constantly monitored. Beyond there measures strict contact tracing and monitoring were done of those who had been in contact with infected people or those who had travelled to high
risk countries. According to Munjangue this resulted in Namibia not reporting any cases of community transmission of the disease so far. “On going testing and an aggressive mass campaign disseminating information about Covid-19 and ways to prevent the spread of the disease, also contributed to stopping the disease in its tracks,” she said. She also praised people adhering to the lock down guidelines. The fact that the disease has not spread is an indication that the lockdown is working effectively. One of the big chal-
lenges facing health care workers and medical staff at the forefront of combatting the disease is stigmatization and resulting discrimination. Munjangue said nursing staff have already received calls, imploring them not to receive donations from the Chinese, as it might be infected. This according to her is a sure sign of discrimination. Some health workers have already been told that they should not come home to their communities, out of fear that these health workers might be infected.
A social worker, attached to the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS), Ms Jowie Theofelus, told the media briefing that stigmatization and stereotyping are dangerous as it implies that a person has lost his or her social status in the community. She gave the example of one family who was under quarantine at home after one member of the family came into contact with an infected person. After the quarantine period had passed and the family members started going about their business in a normal way, people would stop in front of the house, take pictures and post it on
social media. The family was called names like the “Wuhan sick”, or the “Chinese infected” or “macaroni”. This labelling and stigmatizing had severe psychological effects on the family. Social workers were dispatched to help them and restore their social dignity. Dr. Lahija Hamunyela, a psychologist working for the MoHSS, said by labelled people they are been isolated from society. In a video played at the news conference a nurse taking care of Covid-19 patients told how she received phone calls from members of her community who said they
were worried about her returning home, as the community was scared of the possibility of getting infected. “We can't stop our work. We are like soldiers. When soldiers hear the enemy is near, they can't run away. It is the same for us. We can't run away,” she said. Another social worker of the MoHSS, Christa Hansen, said stigmatisation might even prevent someone who is feeling ill from seeking medical treatment, thus exponentially endangering the community. Hamunyela explained that stigma stems from a lack of correct information.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Verhalten von Insekten bei Gefahr Farmganic: Quiz Swakop River (mw) – Vor einiger Zeit sind meiner Frau Lilly und mir während eines Ausflugs in das Swakop Rivier mehrere Insekten begegnet, die ein ähnliches bzw. in einem Fall unterschiedliches Verhalten bei Gefahr gezeigt haben. Die Gefahr waren wir, große Wesen, die sich ihnen genähert haben und die ihre Reaktionen ausgelöst haben. Im ersten Fall waren es Raupen von Spinnern, die sich auf einem Strauch (Lycium tetrandum) von dessen Blättern ernährt haben. Als ich einen Zweig in die Hand nahm, auf dem ein Spinner saß, ließ er sich auf die Erde fallen und kugelte sich sofort zusammen, wobei er seine Haare sträubte. Diese feinen Härchen können starke Irritationen auf der Haut hervorrufen. Nur wenige Meter weiter lief uns eine unserer Namib- Dünenameisen über den Weg. Als sie merkte, dass wir uns für sie interessierten, blieb sie stehen, rollte ihren Hinterleib unter ihren Vorderkörper und streckte uns ihre Zangen entgegen. Außerdem kann sie zur Abwehr Ameisensäure verspritzen. Und wiederum nur ein paar Meter weiter flog eine Heuschrecke davon, als wir uns ihr näherten. Das wiederholte sich immer wieder, sobald wir ihren Sicherheitsabstand unterschritten hatten. Drei Insekten, drei Reaktionen: a. die Spinner-Raupe geht in Deckung, macht sich klein, und nimmt ihre Abwehrhaltung ein, b. die Ameise macht sich klein, ebenfalls um möglichst wenig Angriffspunkt zu geben, und nimmt ihre Abwehrhaltung ein, und c. die Heuschrecke ergreift die Flucht, da sie keine Mittel zur Verteidigung hat. Ich wollte nicht schwanger sein, nicht 8.658 Mal am Tag Windeln wech-seln, nicht um einen Kindergartenplatz kämpfen, nicht Schlafenszeiten und Schlafrhythmen oder Essenszeiten einhalten, mich nicht nach Schulferien richten müssen, nicht mit anderen Eltern Zeit verbringen, deren einziger gemeinsamer Nenner mit mir wäre, dass auch sie erfolgreich das Kapitel Fortpflanzung in Angriff genommen hatten. Ich wollte diesen Alltag nicht. Die ersten 35 Jahre meines Lebens habe ich damit verbracht, diverse Kindheitstraumata zu bearbeiten und einen Großteil der Glaubensmuster zu überwinden, die mir von meiner Umgebung, meinen Eltern, in der Schule, Kirche und Medienwelt über das Leben eingetrichtert worden waren. Ich habe all diese Zeit gebraucht, um mir ein Leben aufzubauen, mir eine Karriere als Schauspielerin zu erlauben, mich unaufhörlich in Frage zu stellen, mein mehrmals gebrochenes Herz zusammenzukleistern. Und gerade jetzt, da ich endlich gelernt habe, mich selbst zu mögen, nicht immer zuerst die anderen emotionalen Bedürfnisse im Raum zu stillen, sondern in mich hineinzuschauen und mich selbst ernst zu nehmen, jetzt soll ich schon wieder für einen Menschen die Umsorgerin sein? Die Verant-
wortliche? Die Möglichmacherin? Die Wärmeausstrahlerin? Die Aus-Liebe-zumKind-einfach-mal-einpaar-Jahre-kürzer-Tretende.? An erster Stelle er, der neue Mensch, an zweiter Stelle ich? Schon wieder? Die Welt hat sich gedreht und diese meine Kinderlosigkeit ist meine persönliche Revolution im Kleinen. Denn ich tue etwas, das in meiner Familie noch niemand vor mir getan hat – in dieser langen Ahnenreihe von fantastischen Frauen, die aus politischen, gesellschaftlichen und persönlichen Gründen ausnahmslos nie wirklich frei nur für sich selbst entscheiden konnten: Ich gebäre kein Kind, sondern mich selbst. Ich will mich selbst umsorgen. Mir selbst beim Wachsen zusehen. Ich habe so unfassbar Lust auf ein Leben nur mit mir. Es ist wie im Flugzeug: Erst die Atemmaske auf das eigene Gesicht ziehen, dann dem Nachbarn helfen. In den letz-ten Jahrhunderten ha-ben wir Frauen sehr oft unsere Nachbarn zuerst mit Sauerstoff versorgt. Das haben wir teilweise unter Zwang, oft aber auch sehr gerne gemacht, schließlich liebten wir den Nachbarn. Nur leider führte dies nicht selten zum eigenen Ersticken. Für meine Lehrerin war ihre Kinderlosigkeit der größte Schmerz. Für einen Teil meiner Familie ist meine Kinderlosigkeit eine kleine, unausgesprochene Schande. Für meine Umgebung bin ich als Frau ohne Kinder stets ein bisschen unvollendet. „Sie unterschätzt, was ihr entgeht.“ „Sie wird es wohl eines Tages bereuen”. Doch ich habe diesen Schmerz nicht. Ich möchte keine Kinder. In dieser Lebensentscheidung liegt meine größte Freiheit. Und meine Dankbarkeit dafür ist so groß wie das Weltall - das übrigens seit den Sechzigern nicht mehr von einer Frau ohne männliche Begleitung beflogen wurde. Aber das ist bestimmt nur Zufall. ENDE

Skulpturen aus Schlangenstein Liebe Küstenleser! Als ich vor dem Lockdown bei meinem Sohn in Kapstadt weilte, fuhren wir auch auf der Kaphalbinsel umher und besuchten dort u.a. eine Ausstellung simbabwischer Künstler im Schatten von breitblättrigen Steineiben (Yellowwood) und Kapschen Lorbeerbäumen (Stinkwood). ‘ Liebe Leser, ich hätte mich tagelang zwischen den ausdrucksvollen Skulpturen aus Springstone bzw. dem metamorphen Serpentinitgestein aufhalten können. Diese Naturstein-Plastiken der Shona, dem größten Bantu-Stamm aus unserem nordöstlichen Nachbarland, dem ehemaligen Rhodesien, sind Zeugnisse einer der ältesten afrikanischen Kunstrichtungen und haben eine sehr, sehr lange Tradition. In den 1950er und 1960er Jahren wurde die Tradition der Shona-Skulpturen von einer Künstlerbewegung im damaligen Rhodesien wiederentdeckt und so in eine moderne Kunstform transformiert. Der Künstler Joram Mariga aus dem Ort Nyanga begann 1958 als Erster damit, Skulpturen in der Tradition der Sho-
Kunst. Damit war der Startschuss für die neuzeitlichen ShonaFiguren gefallen, die stets größtenteils mit Hammer und Meißel und ohne elektronische Werkzeuge hergestellt werden. “Dein Ball für Namibia” Feeding & Care Project Contributed
Dein Ball für Namibia was originally founded to support soccer amongst the Namibian Youth. It was initiated by Tony Arjen Daugals, soccer coach at Swakopmund Football Club (SFC ). When the lockdown was announced, however, they decided to collect funds to support ther youth players in the informal settlements of Swakopmund. This is where the Swakopmund Rotary Club, and especially Ms Anja Rohwer, joined forces with the SFC. They extended the program to a fully-fledged support program for all people in need in these settlements. The youth members of SFC are now involved on a full time basis in packing care hampers containing food, toiletries and clothing. A single hamper can support 5 - 7 persons for a period of 1 week.
These are now delivered on a door-to-door basis. The system of distribution is based on a grid pattern of the settlement visited on a daily basis, to avoid congestion. This method really sees to it that the hampers reach the people that need it most. Tony and his team of helpers are the foot soldiers and the Rotary Club guarantees that our and other donations are only spent for the exclusive purpose of this project. Clifford and myself are absolutely convinced that our donation is money well spent ! With this donation by SRV, approximately 2000 persons will be supported for 1 week. However, the Rotary Club has received
another N$10 000 from their District, plus sup-port to Dein Ball für Namibia, which means that this project has passed the N$ 100 000 mark in a very short period. We sincerely hope that this initiative by SRV will create an awareness with other advantaged groups and hopefully also the business sector to support this absolutely amazing project. May this grow into something that is ongoing and sustainable. Your Board of Trustees would once more like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for your support for the N$10 000.00 starting capital to this project. Covid-19 vs Sports Rudi Bowe The outbreak of Covid-19 globally has upended all areas of life - and sports is no exception with social distancing measures, brought in to limit the spread of coronavirus, have had a significant effect on sporting fixtures and within every aspect of sport that has been affected, from the athletes themselves to media coverage. The entire way of living has been impacted as well as their day to day activities even activities that were taken for granted in the past. These new activities will probably have an impact for sports in the future. Some sportsmen told Namib Times what impacted Covid-19 made in their life's. Well known sportsmen in Walvis Bay, Tyrone " Tyga 15" Mouton said that the most obvious way Covid19 had affected him as a sportsman, is to keep him away from all indoor and outdoor sports activities of which football is his passion. Mouton said “I have learned that as a human being we should take time to look around us and be grateful as fellow Namibians on how fortunate we really are. That we should appreciate our families, friends, fellow sportsmen and women
because we are so dependable to society, locally and internationally.” “I recommend that all sport men & women be patient, respect and abide post lockdown rules as these safety regulations are not put in place to keep us away from the sports that we so dearly love but to keep us safe and healthy and in doing so this will ensure us a save return to all sports codes in the near future” Mouton added. What did I do to keep fit? “First of all, I immediately obeyed the lockdown rules by self-isolation to avoid possible infection. Worked out a daily home training program which consisted of running on the treadmill, time on the exercise bicycle and core & cardio exercises. I did this at sunrise and sun set.” “This Kept me more or less in shape and ready for a proper runout onto the football pitch that we so crave. I would like to send a shout out to Sparta United Recreational Club, the
football division is excited and hope to be reunited with all sports codes to resume training soon. I am confident that together as a nation we will beat the Covid19 pandemic” said Mouton. Granville Nobel said that sports is actually a counter measure against corona keeping one fit and it is a way of boosting your immune and keeping yourself healthy. Ruth L. Davis an athlete said that due to the lockdown, gyms was closed and therefore her early morning resistance training as ceased and due to her employment is an essential services longer hours was required of her and her running in the evening has ceased. “I did not learn allot from COVID-19 and would like to urge other sportsmen and women to use varied methods of training to obtain results.” After the lockdown she will do more training, try to get herself back in line as she was unable to do much due to the limitations on time and avail-

Use every available minute you get with your team or players.
Proper hygiene can prevent so many issues!” Oosthuizen said. Oosthuizen recommendations to other sportsmen and women, stay fit and stay active. Use anything that you have to your availability to practice your sport. Even with all the challenges you are currently experiencing, you will make it through this. Help other coaches or players in the same situation. Share your expertise and help other players with some drills. Communicate with fellow team members or coaches. It helps!
His way forward after Covid19 is to try and repair the damages this lockdown has caused to my players and to put in extra effort to get back on track with our season and start with preparation for next year as most of this season has already been cancelled. “To keep myself fit during lockdown I worked on skill exercises in my garage and even my kitchen. Using Tupperware as cones or markers to dribble and do some skills. I have a small back yard, so practiced some chip shots and controlled hitting/bunting” Oosthuisen added. A sportsman from Swakopmund said that Covid-19 came as a surprise to everyone and as a sports person I never thought I would have such a negative impact. I had an international race called the RacingThePlanet which was scheduled to start 26 April so the past year I put in a lot of hours preparing for it only to be postponed to 5 November. This had a negative effect financially, socially and emotionally. After assessing the situation, I resorted to running again so as to stay fit as this was still legal. The fact that some of my sporting shops were or are still closed, I used limited means to get by during training. Looking ahead, I have decided to run the race solo so as to have a piece of mind as I prepare for the new
date. My recommendation to my fellow sportsmen and woman is to accept the new changes and adjust. Take the break and rest as your body needs it. Deriou Benson the captain of Kudus rugby club it is difficult without sports, sport is a means to keep healthy and fit, to enjoy special sporting moments with friends and teammates as well as family. It also hampers my passion to compete. Benson said the lessons he learned from Covid-19 is that without sport the world is actually quite boring and he learned self-discipline and have to train on your own and be committed. Bensons opinion to other sport men and woman would be to remember that the pandemic will soon be over, and we should be ready and rearing to compete and showcase our talent and abilities. “We should all try and adhere to regulations to prevent further spread of the virus as there is a bigger picture at hand. We all want to go back to our normal routine” Benson added. Benson concluded that he tries to do a morning workout at home for +-45 min and then do a 5km jog in the afternoon but it is however it is difficult without our coaches to push us.
