Swakopmund interchange- Stoning of a bridge now officially open passing vehicle Staff Reporter The coast's road transport infrastructure reached an historic milestone on Wednesday, with the official opening of the Swakopmund-Walvis Bay dual carriage way (MR44 behind the dune belt), the Swakopmund interchange bridge on the B2 highway as well as the newly constructed Swakopmund-Henties Bay road. The opening of the two roads and the interchange bridge follows after several years of construction work and several billion Namibian Dollar pumped into the projects. For both the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Roads Authority (RA) the official opening comes as a major moment of pride and accomplishment. According to the Chief Executive Officer of RA, Conrad Lutombi, the Swakopmund-Walvis Bay dual carriage only has another 15km of construction to complete. That is the last stretch of road before the dual carriage way connects with the C14 (Airport Road) near Walvis Bay. The Swakopmund-Henties Bay road is also nearing completion with some 20km remaining. Several delegates however, who attended the opening were sceptic of the opening ceremony taking place before the projects were fully completed. Some ,attributed that to political window dressing by the Swapo-led Namibian Government so close before the November 25th regional councils and
local authority elections. Adding motorists are using these roads daily, and that a proper opening later next year would have been more suitable. “We could have had an official opening of the completed roads some time next year, but the event was rescheduled to this week, for political reasons I guess”, one delegate speculated on the side line when asked about the timing of the opening. He said more shared his opinion and that it actually degrades the grand scale of these projects as well as the billions of taxpayers’ funds that went into these projects. With politics aside, he explained once all road infrastructure projects are completed, the Erongo Region will be boasting an advanced road transport network. The crown jewel would be the uninterrupted blacktop road link from Walvis Bay to Ruacana through Western Namibia (Walvis Bay-Henties Bay-Uis-Khorixas-Kamanjab-Ruacana).

Namibia needs to end the scourge of Gender-based violence “very urgently” Rudi Bowe A total of 5 961 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) cases were reported in Namibia between September 2019 and September 2020. A total of 3 119 suspects in these cases were arrested of which 2 595 accused face prosecution. A total of 712 suspects were prosecuted in criminal courts throughout the country. The commanding officer of the Namibian Police's newly established SGBV-unit, Deputy Commissioner Johanna Situde, in a recent statement expressed grave concern over the status of SGBV in Namibia. She said a national effort, involving not only the authorities but the public at large, is needed to put an end to the scourge. Adding SGBV cases are most often very complex to detect, to investigate and to prosecute, as the crime is perpetrated behind
closed doors within family units. According to Situde, Khomas Region has the highest rate of SGBV crimes (2 531 cases of the 6 900 cases), Oshana Region (560 cases), Ohangwena Region (533) Hardap Region (502) and Omusati Region 336 cases. According to Deputy Commissioner Situde, the situation around SGBV is further aggravated by the fact that there is a severe shortage of shelters for victims of these crimes. Continues on page 2

I know that asking for all your forgiveness might be too much to ask, but I just want you to know that even though it was hard, I forgave myself. I prayed every day about what I have done and hope that one day you might forgive me too. I know that only apologizing doesn't make things right, but I want to work at correcting with every person I have wronged. Residents of Arandis no longer have to travel to Swakopmund to have access to the Namibia Traffic Information System (NaTis) for vehicle licensing and driving license services. The Ministry of Works and Transport in conjunction with the Roads Authority opened a Natis office at Arandis this week, stating the office will handle registration and licensing of vehicles, annual vehicle license renewals, and testing and issuing of learner licenses. Vehicle roadworthy testing is not yet on offer. The Deputy Minister of Works and Transport, Veikko Nekundi, officially opened NaTis Arandis on Tuesday. He described it as a milestone moment in growing Arandis' strategic importance. “I encourage all the people of Arandis who has vehicles registered on the databases at other registering authorities to move their vehicle registra-
tions to Arandis. That is in order to increase the vehicle population for the Arandis registering authority”, said Nekundi. Nekundi further explained there is more in stall for the Transport Ministry in Erongo. A NaTis office is in the planning for Henties Bay and a fully-fledged Vehicle and Driver Testing Station is in the planning for Karibib. The Minister also made use of the opportunity to issue a warning against scammers. Trade Deputy Minister visits Erongo amidst devastated business climate Sharlien Tjambari The Deputy Minister of Industrialisation Trade and SME Development Verna Sinimbo is in Erongo to familiarise herself with the state of affairs with the region's various business communities, following the devastating Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions which gave the Region's business climate a devastating blow. The Minister in an interview with the Namib Times said the fact-finding mission is to equip her with knowledge and understanding for future de-
cision making. “I am here to understand what is happening on the ground. For me to make decisions, I need to understand the SME's, how they are doing and
what they are doing”. Sinimbo further said she understands it was not easy for all SME's, especially during this pandemic. What is encouraging is these SME's are
trying to revive their businesses, and it is now more important than ever for the public and other businesses to support SME's. “The quality of products

NRCS launches humanitarian aid project Rudi Bowe
Namibia Red Cross Society (NRCS) on Monday, 26 October launched the NRCS Humanitarian Aid Project (HAP) to the value of one million eight hundred thousand Namibia Dollars. HAP is to provide livelihood support and reduce the impact of Covid-19 on hard-hit communities for a period of three months through cash transfers for vulnerable households in Walvis Bay. The Deputy Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare Bernadette Maria Jagger said at the event with the support of the Office of the Governor, the Office of the Mayor, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare and the Walvis Bay Urban and Rural Constituency
Offices, 1200 vulnerable households were selected and that they will each receive a total of N$1500 per month per household for the next three months (October to December). “All lists of vulnerable households received from the various stakeholders, will be validated and assessed individually against Red Cross approved criteria and by a team made up of various stakeholders in order to ensure utmost transparency in the selection of the benefitting households”Jagger said. Jagger added “In consultation with the local Municipality, the NRCS and its partner, the International Federation of Red Cross and as a Humanitarian
Organisation, has the obligation to meet the Government efforts half way by assisting the fire victims of Otwya resettlement Walvis Bay in providing them with material support such as temporary shelter, food and also health packs.” Jagger said that the International Federation of the Red Cross Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) will be distributing hygiene packs to the value of N$252 000 to 154 vulnerable individuals Otwya resettlement. “The lack of media attention and visibility in cases of disaster, small, medium or large scale, could mean that international appeals for funding are not forthcoming to support and
response, therefore it is believed that without external assistance, people affected by these small, medium and large-scale emergencies, are often pushed into vulnerability that is deepened by each subsequent disaster, eroding their resilience and coping capacity” Jagger said.

Pacific Service Station cares about you Sharlien Tjambari
Pacific Service Station which was previously known as Crossroads officially opened its doors to the public recently, with the aim of offering affordable services to the community of Swakopmund and surrounding areas. The service station lies on Rakotoka street just opposite the Swakopmund Municipality. According to the managers, Gerhard and Louise Laas, the reason why they were given the task of running Pacific Service Station is because of the Puma service station which they successfully managed in Arandis. The couple received Puma Arandis on March 17, just 10 days before lockdown. They took Puma Arandis Service Station over at the request of Arandis Town Council and Mr H du Toit of Namibia Gypsum. “It was an exceedingly difficult time to tackle something like this, but nonetheless, we turned it around and made it profitable by focusing on what we can offer the people of Arandis. Based on our success at Arandis, the old Crossroads was offered to us. After much negotiation, we accepted it, renamed it Pacific Service Station, and it has brought us to this day”. Describing how the launch of Pacific Service Station was and the outcome and support they received, Gerhard said “It was a first for both me and my wife, Puma went to great lengths to make the day a success. The Chief Executive Officer of Puma Gallo Diack also attended the launch, we cut a red ribbon and started refuel-ling! The gifts and food were a combination of contribution between us and Puma. We appreciate the support we received from the public and our friends during the launch of our
service station and we strive to provide our town with a clean service station with friendly service and a large general range of necessities”. Pacific Service Station currently have 19 staff members and believes in running shorter shifts. This according to Gerhard, has a long-term benefit for the workers because they do not get so tired and can serve the public better. He further adds: “We do not believe in the normal service station markup methods. We are also currently moving in difficult times and would rather make our services more affordable for the public. For us, there is no reason to drive up prices simply because we offer a 24hour service”. Gerhard is a pilot by profession. He flew abroad for 12 years, for a company called Cathay Pacific based in Hong Kong. Due to family interests, Gerhard decided to return home, to Namibia full time. Cricket Namibia takes game to Community Rudi Bowe
Cricket Namibia (CN) is on a mission to develop, grow and spread the game of cricket in all the regions of Namibia. They are committed to upskill coaches who can help with the development of cricket for the future. To achieve their goal, the High-performance Coordinator of Cricket Namibia, Dee Thakur facilitated an Introduction to Level One Coaching Course, on 16 and 17 October at Kuisebmond Secondary School in Walvis Bay. Thakur said that the introduction to the Level One Coaching Course is designed to develop coaches understanding of the fundamentals of hardball cricket and lead them into the Level One Coaching Course. “The 24 participants that attend the course were very keen to learn and take part in the practical sessions. It was clear to see that they have the passion to give back to their community”, Thakur said. Thakur continued by saying he was satisfied with the positivity of the Kuisebmond community towards cricket and thanked Cricket Namibia Development Officer Justus Hangula, and Lesley / Uirab from Kuisebmond Secondary School for organising the logistics of a successful course. The Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Namibia, Johan Muller believes cricket talent at the coast is enormous and that Walvis Bay is currently the biggest cricket development hub in Namibia. Walvis Bay has produced players that are now part of our men's national team and with Swakopmund it can become the cricket hub for women cricket in Namibia. “Cricket Namibia need to support them with infrastructure as the infrastructure at the coast is not up to standard and good enough to produce quality national players”, Muller said. According to Muller all complements need to go to the Coastal Development Officer, Coach Justice 'Dallas' Hangula for the excellent work that he is doing with the boys and girls at the coast. The Principal of Kuisebmond Secondary School, Mr Jonathan Maswahu welcomed the participants and commended Cricket Namibia for giving the teachers the opportunity to spread the game in the community of Walvis Bay.
The 24th Edition of the WBSRG Coastal Rudi Bowe Youth Cricket Festival Cricket Namibia in conjunction with Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Group (WBSRG) hosted the 24th Edition of the Coastal Youth Cricket Festival from 23 to 25 October in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. The tournament known as the Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Coastal Youth Cricket Festival marks the seventh consecutive year that Walvis Bay Salt Group is involved in this great platform for younger cricketers to excel and develop their potential while enjoying this wonderful game called cricket. Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Coastal Youth Cricket Festival contributes significantly to Cricket Namibia's strategic focus points to increase in the number of games for school-based players and plays a major part in the development of a holistic child. This year's festival saw 252 young boys and girls participating in the under 11 boys, under 13 boys and girls as well as under 16 girlsfrom Windhoek Gymnasium, Gobabis Gymnasium, Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaat Skool, St. Paul's College, Outjo Cricket Development, Walvis Bay Private High School, Pro-Ed Academy, Kuisebmond Secondary School, Walvis Bay Primary School, Namspire Cricket Academy and !Nara Primary School. The three-day-long tournament saw a new addition of a girls-only festival played at Pro-Ed Academy in Swakopmund whilst all the boys played at Walvis Bay Private High School, Sparta Cricket Oval, Walvis Bay Oval and Walvis Bay Primary School in Walvis Bay. Cricket Namibia CEO, Johan Muller said that the Coastal Youth Cricket Festival remains a unique opportunity for every young cricket player as many players who participated in this festival progressed through the ranks and later represented Namibia at junior and senior national levels. Muller said “This festival's main focus is on cricket development and the promotion of the game. This year's event is once again a huge success and was dedicated to all junior school cricketers. “It is my believe that all players, coaches, managers, parents and supporters enjoy the festival and that the success of the festival is due to Walvis Bay Salt Refiners, all the participating schools as well as the organising team” Muller said. Mr 24/7 Welwitschia lost opening games Rudi Bowe Mr 24/7 Welwitschia with players from Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Outjo got off to skimpy starts in the 2020/2021 Namibian Premier Cricket League over 50 over's and T20 leagues in Windhoek over the past weekend. At the Wanderers ground this past Saturday, the visiting Welwitschia side were outclassed as they lost the 50 over's league game by eight wickets against Wanderers in Windhoek. The Welwitschia slumped to 56 all out, before Wanderers reached the target for the loss of only two wickets. Mr 24/7 Welwitschias' provided stiffer resistance in their T20 encounter on Sunday but lost against Wanderers with 45 runs. The Mr 24/7 team dismissed Wanderers for 154 with six wickets, before they were dismissed for 110. In Welwitschias' innings, William Lottering (1) and Marco Malan (4) were soon dismissed, but they made a spirited comeback. Michael van Lingen scored 29 off 31 balls, and Romano Scholtz scored 11, while Reynard van Zyl and Scott Winborn both scored 20 from 22 balls.
