President Geingob also viewed it of utmost importance for every Namibian alive today to understand and accept the responsibility to pass on a well-preserved and clean country to future generations. Cleaning up is not only crucial in that everyone can see and enjoy a clean and tidy country, but it also assists greatly to fight many sorts of diseases (hygiene) and it carries out a positive perception of Namibians standing in solidarity for a better and cleaner Namibia.
Namibia makes strides in combating illegal fishing Namibia made a significant stride yesterday in the prevention and combating of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU). The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) signed a Project Agreement that will pave the way to improve the country's ability and capability to combat illegal fishing. The signing ceremony coincides with a workshop hosted by the FAO in Swakopmund for the formulation of a national strategy and action plan for Namibia to prevent and deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in its waters and also effectively dealing with foreign vessels using Namibian ports in the event of illegal fishing operations. In a statement the Ministry of Fisheries comprehensively discussed and described the current situation around illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing as well as the objects of the workshop that concludes in Swakopmund on Friday. “The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will sign a Project Document on Port State Measures Support Project (PSMSP). This project aims to improve State's capability for the cohesive implementation of the provisions and procedures consistent with the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA and related international instruments, regional mechanisms and tools to combat IUU fishing. MFMR & FAO will hold a workshop taking place in Swakopmund on 28 May to Friday 1 June 2018. Background: Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing constitutes a pressing problem estimated to subtract significant economic and natural resources from the global economy and the marine environment. Its effects can be severe, particularly for developing coastal States and non-high income Small Island Developing State dependent on fisheries. Countries unable to fulfil international obligations for fisheries management and governance also risk incurring trade sanctions on their fisheries exports. In 2007, FAO's Committee on Fisheries recognised the need for a legally binding instrument on Port State Measures (PSM) to combat IUU fishing. In 2009, the FAO Conference approved the Agreement on Post State Measures to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing

Although Namibia has one of the most productive fishing grounds in the world and fish export revenues already topping N$10 billion, the country still relies too heavily on foreigners (expatriates) in the marine and maritime engineering sectors. A lack of local expertise is critically needed as the current status quo is not sustainable.
The above statement was made yesterday at Walvis Bay yesterday by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernhard Esau at the official opening of a stakeholder conference on the establishment of a marine engineering and maritime studies school in Namibia. Several nations are assisting Namibia in the process to establish such a school and are represented at the conference. The University of Namibia is spearheading the establishment of the school. “For Namibia to benefit maximally and unlock its blue economy potential, there is a great need to invest heavily in local human resource capacity development. Currently, Namibia relies heavily on expatriates in the marine and maritime engineering sectors, which in my opinion is unsustainable”, remarked the minister. [A Blue Economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs and also preserving the health of the ocean]. Adding skills development in the blue economy sectors is a crucial catalyst to drive national development agendas, especially to expand the country's manufacturing- and value adding industries. The Minister recognised the fact that there is currently no Bachelor's or post graduate degree available in Namibia for Namibians to pursue a qualification in the fields of marine engineering and maritime studies. The School will offer education and training opportunities beyond the current Namibia Maritime and Fisheries Institute (Namfi) and fisheries and aquatic sciences offered by the Sam Nujoma Campus at Henties Bay. (hereafter referred to as the PSMA or the Agreement). The PSMA aims to prevent fish caught through IUU fishing from entering national and international markets by prohibiting the entry into and use of ports by foreign vessels engaged, or believed to be engaged, in IUU fishing. The Agreement sets out the roles and responsibilities of the Parties in general, and specifically for port States, as well as for other States (coastal States, State of vessel's master nationality) in the implementation of the provisions of the Agreement. The Agreement, which is binding on the Parties, entered into force on 5 June 2016. As of 5 April 2018, there were 54 Parties to the Agreement. Namibia deposited its instrument of accession to the Agreement on July 18, 2017. Through the PSMSP, FAO will assist Namibia in reviewing compliance with the provisions of the agreement and in formulating national strategies and action plans to gradually fulfil the requirements set forth in the PSMA and related international instruments and regional mechanisms accordingly. This will be mainly undertaken through a national level, multi-stakeholder workshop to: Increase awareness of the international and regional framework for the implementation of port State Measures; Undertake an initial review of existing policies and legislation, institutional arrangements, and Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) systems and operations; Define a course of action for the Introduction of the provisions and procedures consistent with the PSMA and related international instruments and regional mechanisms to combat IUU fishing and Identify capacity building needs for the implementation of port State measures.

Earthquake strikes near Khorixas Eileen van der Schyff Kamanjab: A fifteen second earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale was recorded 35 kilometers northwest of Kamanjab on Thursday. The quake was measured at approximately 09:08 and was picked up by three seismic stations of Namibia’s seismological network. Communities in the area live in constant fear, as a similar earthquake toppled the wall of at least one building structure only a few weeks ago. The three-phase readings were picked up by the Geological Survey of Nambia for WIN (Windhoek), ARMS (Ariamsvlei) and AUSN (AUS), according to a press release from the Ministry of Mines and Energy issued the same day on 24 May. The exact location of the quake was given by the Ministry in the press statement as latitude (Y): -19.5030S, longitude (X): -14.5600E and a depth of 15 km. The quake further recorded to have spanned over about a 10 kilometer radius. “Preliminary calculations show that the epicenter of the quake was located in the Kaoko Orogenic Belt, which is a regional tectonic structure. The current location is one of the
known seismic zones in Namibia and according to the Geological survey of Namibia, these events are expected to occur more frequently in this area”, according to the statement. The Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary of The Geological Survey of Namibia, Gloria Simubali further states that Namibia has low seismic activities and where seismic activities occur it is usually of low intensity. “However, the fact that we feel these tremors should always remind us that the crust of the earth is dynamic and evolves continuously. Tremors and earthquakes are therefore very natural, but unpredictable. In Namibia though, the magnitudes are relatively low and the occurrence is infrequent”, said Simubali in the statement. Pictures of the damages as a result of the quake in the Khorixas area on Thursday. The quake follows only a few weeks after a quake toppled a wall in almost the same area.

Burglaries and theft spins out of control at the coast Mondesa: Several arrests have been made in connection with theft and burglary over the weekend with incidents ranging from two suspects who stole a generator and jackpot machine from a business premises, an underage suspect stole a cell phone and in a housebreaking incident another two suspects stole a television set.
It is alleged that Kavela Martin (38) and Thomas Ismael (45) used a bolt cutter to cut a padlocked chain to gain entrance to a business where they stole a generator valued at N$ 6 999-00 and a jackpot machine valued at N$80 000. The generator was recovered at the Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) suburb, and the jackpot machine was recovered at a bar in Windhoek. That is according to Erongo Crime and Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Likuyu. The two suspects appeared in the Swakopmund Court yesterday. In another incident, a seventeen year old suspect stole a Samsung Galaxy cell phone, valued at N$5 599 from the complainant's room where it was left unattended. It was in Mondesa. The suspect has been arrested, but the cell phone has not been recovered yet. In a housebreaking incident, it is alleged that on Saturday 19 May, at around 12:00, Engelhard Awaseb (32) and Andreas Falango (29) used an unknown object to break into a shack where they stole a JVC 32 inch television set valued at N$8 000. The stolen tv was recovered and the two suspects were arrested and made a first appearance in the Swakopmund magistrates yesterday.
Cyclist knocked over and killed after being run over by three cars Eileen van der Schyff
Swakopmund: A cyclist was killed near Swakopmund on Thursday after he was knocked over by a white Mercedes Benz on the B2 some twelve kilometers east of Swakopmund. Two more vehicles then drover over the cyclist. The Mercedes Benz, with registration number N1429 S, was traveling towards Arandis when the driver failed to spot the cyclist in time. Despite braking, the vehicle first hit and then drover over the cyclist. A second and a third vehicle then also drove over the gravely injured cyclist. The incident was confirmed by the Erongo’s Crimes Investigations Coordinator, Deputy
Commissioner Erastus likuyu. The cyclist was declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital. The deceased was working and residing at the Shalom smallholding at Nonidas. He was apparently cycling home after work when the accident claimed his life. The Namibian Police is investigating the incident to determine if someone is to be held liable for this fatal traffic incident.
Arrested with nearly 2kg of cannabis Josef Shishuweni Katuna (24) was arrested on Saturday, 26 May at about 17:30 in Mondesa for dealing in two bags of cannabis, weighing 1980 grams valued at N$19 800. The suspect appeared in court yesterday on a charge of drug possession.
Man arrested after stabbing another with knife in the neck Sinvula Sambi Glen (29) was arrested for attempted murder on Friday 25 May, between 00:00 and 01:00. That was after he stabbed a 32-year male on the left side of his neck with an unknown object. According to Erongo Crimes Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the incident took place at New-Edition bar in Tamariskia. The victim sustained serious injuries and was admitted at the Swakopmund State Hospital in a critical but stable condition. The suspect was arrested and appeared at the Swakopmund magistrates court yesterday on a charge of attempted murder.
Truck loses its cargo This truck driver was in for a nasty surprise on Am SĂźdring Street in Swakopmund yesterday when its haul of charcoal toppled over and landed on the street. The incident was caused after those responsible for loading and securing the cargo did a poor job of it. Traffic flow had to be redirected to make space available for the recovery of the cargo.

Swakopmund psychiatrist’s rape and attempted murder case transferred to the Windhoek High Court Windhoek: Swakopmund psychiatrist Pieter van der Westhuizen (61), made a first pre-trial appearance in the Windhoek High Court on Thursday, facing three charges of rape, one charge of indecent assault and one charge of attempted murder. That is after his case has been transferred from the Swakopmund magistrates court to the Windhoek High Court for prosecution. Van der Westhuizen allegedly drugged a woman and repeatedly raped her at his practise at Swakopmund. He also allegedly gave her various types of tablets to make her both mentally and physically unstable, in order to be able to overpower and rape her. The incident allegedly happened on a Saturday morning (7 November 2015), at van der Westhuizen's practice, when no one else was

present. It took the victim an extended period to report the matter. After a police investigation, van der Westhuizen was charged for his alleged crimes a year later in November 2016. He was freed on bail of N$10 000 and returned to court several times. The pre-trial appearances now prepare the legal process for van der Westhuizen to stand trial in the High Court of Namibia.
Arrested for illegal possession of a pistol and two live rounds Mondesa: A thirty-three-year-old man was found in possession of a firearm, which after a preliminary investigation showed it was registered in the name of a business in Windhoek. On Wednesday, 23 May, Samual Teofelus (pictured) was arrested in the Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC), a suburb of Mondesa during a police search. According to the Erongo Crime Investigations coordinator, Erastus Likuyu, they found in the suspect's possession a Browning 9mm pistol (pictured), one magazine and two live rounds, valued at plus minus N$5 000. The suspect appeared in the Swakopmund court yesterday on charges formulated from the Arms and Munitions Act.

Three vehicle carriers to call during June
Three roll-on roll-off vehicle carriers (ro-ro’s) are expected to call at the port of Walvis Bay during June. Vehicle carriers are pivotal in the trade flow of second hand vehicles from overseas into markets in Southern Africa. Many Southern African militaries are also using ro-ro’s for the importation of vehicles like troop carriers or field logistics units. The first expected alongside is Bankok Highway on 4 June, Aquamarine Ace on 7 June and Garnet Ace on 23 June, according to the daily port log.

Mother in court for murder after dumping newborn baby girl As the community of Walvis Bay is still coming to terms with the discovery of the body of a baby boy over the weekend in a dustbin at the town's state hospital, a second similar incident sent renewed shock waves through the harbour town community this week. Petrina Joseph, a thirty two-year-old mother, allegedly early on Tuesday morning gave birth to a baby girl. She wrapped the child in a towel and then placed the child in a plastic bag where after she threw it in a dustbin at her house. Information reached the police. An investigation was launched and the body of the newborn girl was discovered. Joseph was arrested and is now charged with murder and concealment of birth. Swakopmund Matters 1 – 2018: International Developments i.r.o. Seabed Mining – Namibia, Papua New Guinea and Moratorium on seabed mining in the Northern Territory of Australia extended again 1. Namibia For the last year the issue of marine phosphate mining has been rather dormant with court cases taking their course. On 11 May the Namibian High Court ruled that the Minister of Environment and Tourism (MET) had failed to give a fair hearing to Namibian Marine Phosphate (NMP) before he set aside the environmental clearance certificate of NMP in 2016. Following the High Court ruling MET announced that an open public hearing to include all parties would be held on 28 May. However, on 25 May MET postponed that meeting sine die. 2. Papua New Guinea A multinational mining company has withdrawn its support from the Solwara 1 seabed mining project in Papua New Guinea. In advance of its London annual general meeting on 8 May, Anglo American confirmed it is divesting from the project led by Canadian company Nautilus Minerals. This is a clear indication of loss in investor confidence in the Solwara 1 Project and experimental seabed mining in PNG. 3.Deep-sea mining possibly as damaging as land mining, lawyers warn Environmental and legal groups have warned of potential huge effects on Indigenous people and the environment as they consider the “new global gold rush” over deep-sea mining to hold the same potential pitfalls as previous resource scrambles, with environmental and social impacts ignored and the rights of Indigenous people marginalised. Details are contained in papers in the Harvard Environmental Law Review of 16 April and in Marine Policy 90 (2018) published in Science Direct by Elsevier Ltd on 2 February. 4. Developments in the Northern Territory of Australia - Moratorium on seabed mining extended again The Moratorium on exploration and mining of coastal waters off the Northern Territory (NT) imposed in 2012 and extended in 2015 will now remain in place until March 2021 to allow for a comprehensive review of the actual or potential impacts of seabed mining coastal waters of the NT. On 6 March 2012 the Government of the Northern Territory (NT) announced a three year moratorium on granting titles permitting exploration for minerals or mining and on issuing authorisations permitting mining activities within the coastal waters of the NT until a review of actual or potential impacts of seabed mining has been undertaken. This moratorium does not include petroleum exploration and production and port development. [This Moratorium can be accessed with this link:http://www.territorystories.nt.gov.au/jspui/bitstream/10070/277 432/1/6.10 The Moratorium was subsequently extended on 5 March 2015 for a further three years to allow for the review to be completed and considered by the NT Government. The then NT Government's go-slow approach was aimed at ensuring that the unique Territorian lifestyle is looked after and marine flora and fauna are protected. Swakopmund Matters reported at the time on both the Moratorium and its first extension. On 17 May the Acting Minister for Environment and Natural Resources of the NT announced that the Moratorium would be further extended until March 2021 to allow further time for the review to be completed as there is much more scientific analysis that needs to be done to fully understand the potential risks and impacts of seabed mining before it can be considered by Government. The full text of the announcement is supplied in section 4 below. The NT's Department of Environment and Natural Resources aims to submit a draft report to the NT EPA for its consideration in the second half of 2018, with public consultation on the draft report to follow before a final report is provided to the NT Government. How the Moratorium on seabed mining works The Moratorium provides that the Minister administering the Mineral Titles Act and Mining Management Act (the Minister) will not for a period of three years from the date of the Moratorium (or any extension of it by the Minister) grant any mineral exploration licence, mineral exploration licence in retention, mineral lease, or mineral authority or issue any authorisation in respect of exploration for minerals or mining within the coastal waters of the NT. For the term of the Moratorium the Minister will be precluded from: · exercising any functions in respect to assessing, granting, or reviewing mineral titles relating to exploration for minerals or mining within the coastal waters of the NT; and · exercising any functions in respect to assessing and issuing authorisations in relation to any activities for or associated with exploration for minerals or mining within the coastal waters of the NT. The Moratorium clarifies that this means all applications for mineral titles, authorisations, or both, in respect of any area or activity within the coastal waters of the NT which were lodged prior to, or after, the commencement of the Moratorium, will not be assessed during the term of the Moratorium. The status of mineral titles and authorisations in effect during the Moratorium is as follows: · each granted mineral title will be retained on the register of titles in the form and to the extent of the title as at the commencement of this Moratorium. The Minister will not require a mineral title holder to comply with the requirements of the Mineral Titles Act or regulations in respect to such matters as those relating to annual reporting, reduction of the title area and the like; and · each authorisation issued will remain on the register of authorisations in the form and to the extent of the title as at the commencement of this Moratorium. The Minister will retain all security deposits paid by appointed operators in respect of any authorisations issued. In respect of an authorisation permitting exploration or mining activities to be carried out within the coastal waters of the NT the Minister will not: o review or assess an original, revision or amended version of a Mining Management Plan; or o review a security calculation submitted by a person in connection with a security deposit required for an authorisation or any conditions imposed on an authorisation to review the security amount. Comprehensive review of seabed mining practices and impacts As stated in the Moratorium, the review is to: · examine practices adopted or applied in seabed mining both internationally and within Australia, and identify which of these are considered as environmentally best practices;
· identify the likely impacts of seabed mining on the environment and other resources, including commercial and recreational fishing, including identification of impacts which have occurred as a result of, or in association with, seabed mining; · examine the mitigation strategies that have or could be used to manage the impacts of sea based exploration and seabed mining on the environment and other resources; and · include consideration of advice from the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) on appropriate measures to ensure the avoidance of sacred sites and protection of sacred sites as a part of any exploration and/or mining of seabed mineral resources. The aim of the review will be to: · identify the appropriate standards for acceptance by the NT which will adequately address the needs of the community in respect of industry “best practice”, protection of the environment, protection of social and cultural impacts, mitigation strategies and community involvement; and · permit the development of regulations, guidelines, or both, for the assessment of applications (received but not assessed due to the moratorium and future applications) to ensure consistency of assessment procedures and appropriate determinations, taking into account the relevant factors. To inform its review in accordance with the Moratorium, in 2012 the then NT Government requested that: · the former Environment Protection Authority (former EPA) undertake a comprehensive assessment of the actual or potential impacts of seabed mining activities on the environment and other resource industries and methods for managing the impacts; and · the AAPA undertake a review of the appropriate measures to ensure the avoidance of sacred sites and protection of sacred sites as a part of any exploration and/or mining of seabed mineral resources. In November 2012, the former EPA delivered its Interim Report: Seabed Mining in the Northern Territory which was an incomplete review given the limited research available with respect to social, cultural and economic matters. The Interim Report recommended the seabed mining review be continued, given the: · novel and technically innovative nature of seabed mining; · limited seabed mining knowledge and experience presently available within the NT and nationally; · many unknown problems likely to be encountered in securing sound environmental management and effective impact mitigation strategies; · increasing public expectations that new developments will be both economically and environmentally sustainable; · importance of identifying methods and processes for adequate protection of cultural heritage values; · benefits and certainty that specific policies and regulatory frameworks will provide for government, industry and the wider community; and · scope for better-informed natural resource management within NT coastal waters to deliver social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits. They play a key role in the economic and recreational life of the Territory and are home to important ecosystems and abundant sea life. Seabed mining is a highly complex activity and currently there is limited information available on the impacts of seabed mining on the environment and how to manage those impacts appropriately. It is important that should there be any future development of our marine environment, it is sustainable and ensures its ongoing health. There is much more scientific analysis that needs to be done to fully understand the potential risks and impacts of seabed mining before it can be considered by Government. As such, the moratorium will remain in place until March 2021 to allow the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to undertake a comprehensive review of the actual or potential impacts of seabed mining on NT coastal waters. The Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority will provide advice on mechanisms to protect sacred sites.” The Department aims to submit a draft report to the NT Environment Protection Authority for its consideration in the second half of 2018. The community will then be consulted on the draft before a final report is provided to the NT Government for its consideration. The Territory Government understands how valuable the Territory's marine and coastal environments are and we want to ensure that any future activity is well managed and sustainable. We are already delivering on our election promise to develop a Coastal and Marine Management Strategy for the NT. The Strategy will provide a critical framework for how all stakeholders work together to manage and protect the coastal and marine environments over the next ten years. The Territory Labor Government is also developing a comprehensive Plan of Management for Limmen Bight Marine Park. This will be done in conjunction with traditional owners, Aboriginal rangers and other key stakeholders and will safeguard the Limmen Bight through sustainable fisheries management, banning seabed mining and developing tourism and local job opportunities. We need to make sure we are taking a considered and well-informed approach to any future development in our marine environments. Wake-up - its Küska
Photo by Martin Weigand The annual Swakopmunder Karneval, better known as the Küska kicked off on Saturday and galvanises Swakopmund into a spirit of festivity and celebration. Küska every year starts with the Narrenwecker, or street party, which adds some spice and colour to the town’s street scenes. See pictures on this page of Saturday’s event. The main Küska event starts on 15 June and concludes on 23 June with the traditional float procession. Official figures show the event on Saturday was attended by some 500 people. Tickets for the Küska can be purchased at the Brauhaus between 11:30 and 15:00 daily.

25 May is clean-up day Every year on 25 May will be national clean-up day in Namibia. This year was the first time the event took place. At the coast it was no exception and was preceded by a colourful event at Walvis Bay’s town entrance on Thursday. The story of a brave cancer warrior
The du Toit Family
JL with his mom Rudi Bowe Jan-Lotz du Toit “AKA JL”, is a 13-year-old energetic boy who is a grade eight learner at The Dolphin Schools in Walvis Bay. He loves driving in the dunes whether it is with his quad, or his dad's Jeep. This rugby loving boy is a big Blue Bull supporter and his greatest love is Archery. He is a member of the WASP Archery Club in Walvis Bay, with Jeanine de Jager as his coach. The story of JL started late in 2017, when was sitting on a wall, and JL fell off, “like Humpty Dumpty.” During that time, he was attending a boarding school in Windhoek. He told his mom about the fall, and that the fall left a “blou kol”, not thinking anything about it, they left it there. At the beginning of the school holiday in December 2017, he was riding quads with his niece, and he fell once again. He only told his mother about it three days later, when she saw the mass on his left leg below the knee. His mother made an appointment with Dr van Wyk, who ordered x-rays. As Dr van Wyk was not sure what it was, he sent the du Toit family to Dr Andre van Niekerk, an Orthopaedic Specialist in Swakopmund, where he on 3 January ordered an MRI. After carefully studying the MRI, the doctor told the family that it is a “gel” like mass and that JLs bone itself was inflamed. Dr Andre gave the family medication and said that they need to give it about six weeks to normalise and then get back to him. After about 3 weeks into the treatment, his mother saw that the mass is double the size. She and her husband, Loftier, took JL back to Dr van Niekerk where he told the family that there boy needs an operation and that he does not feel comfortable to do the operation as the mass is too close to the “grow plate” beneath the Patella of the knee. Dr van Niekerk referred the du Toit family to Dr Keith Hosking in Cape Town. Our appointment with Dr Hosking could only be made after the examination. Our family travelled to Cape Town on 1 May. Dr Hosking ordered another MRI and a Biopsy. On 7 May at 14:20, Dr Keith Hosking confirmed the worse news ever to the family. JL has Osteosarcoma (Bone cancer). Wow, I cannot remember a lot after that. He sort of explain to us that he will have meetings with the Oncologist and that he planned to remove the bone from below the Patella to the ankle and replace it with a Titanium prosthetic Tibia.
He also told us that he is very sorry to give us such bad news and that we had to go home, make a list of questions and come back on Wednesday, 9 May, and ask our questions and he promises that he will answer them as honestly as possible. In the meantime, he will meet up with his team and they will discuss the way forward. I remember it was quiet in the car for a long time, and then suddenly JL said “Mamma, hierdie storie het nou van 0 tot 100 in twee dae gegaan.” And that is the moment which I realised that he actually understand what is going on. When we arrived on the 9th at his rooms, Dr Hosking was a lot more calm, and informed us that he had meetings for two days with other Oncologists, and that the best way to tackle this tumor is to remove a piece of the Femur, the whole Patella and the Tibia to above his ankle, with some nerves and muscles around the Tibia, as well as the whole of the Fibula. In short, all the bone from above his knee to above his ankle with most of the nerves and muscles will be removed. And that this whole procedure will take between 4 to 6 hrs. He said the surgery has to happen soonest, and was scheduled for Friday, 11May. JL was booked in on the Thursday afternoon and when we arrived at the hospital on the 11th, he was in very high spirit and had a “jol” in the ward. He was laying with 3 much older “oompies”, and they told us that he made them laugh a lot. He was rolled to theater around 11h00, and Loftie and I was permitted to be with him until they put him to sleep. Dr Hosking, then took our telephone number, demanded we leave the hos-
pital, and told us that he will phone us when he is done, then we can return. JL was put under at 11h55, and we left the hospital. Then we waited for the phone call. We were busy eating at Century City, when the phone rang at exactly 15h00, and we expected the worst. When I ans-wered, Dr Hosking informed me: “All went very well and he is busy waking up, you guys can return now!” Dr informed us that JL had an epidural for pain management and that he will have it running for the time he is in ICU, and he will be staying in ICU for the rest of the weekend. He also told us that he removed cancerous nerves, muscle and tumour, but a Chest X-ray was done and that we must wait for the result and the Lab results of the bone and tumour and that blood transfusion will also take place. Currently JL is out of ICU and he is doing fine. Saturday was touch and go, because his fever went haywire and we thought that an infection has stepped in, but the blood samples showed negative. The blood transfusion was stopped and the fever returned to normal. When we visited on Sunday, he looked a hundred percent better, was more aware of his surroundings and some of his drip pipes were removed. We as a family do not know how to thank everyone for the support we are getting. I really don't want to start naming people, because I will leave someone out, but I just need to thank Jeanine de Jager, parents of Wasp and each and every archer in Wasp for what they are doing. You are an awesome team.

On Saturday, 19 May, everyone at the Destination Swakopmund Better-ball Yellow Ball Competition was full of fun for everyone. It is being said that the little ball really psyched some of the guys out, and it was easy to see from the final scores in the clubhouse, which teams lost that double score gremlin along the way. However, everybody had a great day, and the weather was just perfect. The course also looks good after the rain, but sadly not the other side of the river, it's a different story.
The Walvis Bay Golf course is totally under water. Good luck with the cleanup operations. The field was boosted by several Walvis Bay players joining the mix. Nearest to the Pin Prizes went to George Murasiki on Number 7 and Willie Van Zyl on Number 12 – whilst two clubs were recorded by Johan Swanepoel, Rocco Viljoen, Willie van Zyl and Herman Neethling. Winners: 1st: Michael Ludeke and Org van Rensburg 83pts 2nd: Thomas Shitaleni and Des Frankfort (was great to see you back on the course) 80pts 3rd: Andre Burger and Rocco Viljoen 76pts On Sunday 20 May the SAGES played their monthly competition generously sponsored this time around by Dr Silvio Suardi. At the prize-giving Sages Chairman, Achmet thanked Dr Silvio in his absence for his continuous support to golf at Rossmund. Once again the weather was just perfect and the great day was enjoyed by all. Everyone went home with something whilst the best scores for the day came from Achmet 39pts, Bertie 38pts, Koot 36pts, Lucille 34pts, Mark and Theo 33pts. Four Erongo Boys at Craven Week Four under 13 rugby boys has been elected in the Under 13 National team which will participate at the Under 13 Craven week from 1-7 July 2018 in Kimberly. The boys are Nicholas van der Colff from Pro-Ed Academy in Swakopmund and Bianco Stuart Michael Koopman and Miguel Garcia Steenkamp are all from Walvis Bay Primary School. They were selected from 40 other under 13 players from all the regions in the country. This is the second year that Bianco Stuart is been selected.
