Fish canning plant to bring 450 jobs Seaflower Pelagic Processing in Walvis Bay announced this week the construction of its fish canning plant is progressing well and could be operational by October this year. The cannery will provide approximately 450 local jobs. The Company commissioned its 14 000 square meter under-roof processing facility in Walvis Bay in January 2019 and holds the accolades as the largest land-based pelagic fish processing plant in sub-Sahara Africa. It is also one of the biggest employers in the Namibian fishing industry. The jobs created by the cannery will boost total employment at Seaflower Pelagic Processing to over 1 100 personnel which include land-based and seagoing personnel. Currently, the Company employs 600 people at its freezing plant, 8 people at its fish meal plant, 27 seagoing personnel on its two fishing vessels, MFV Nordervon and MFV Steinsund and 40 people employed in management- and administrative positions. Seaflower Pelagic Processing (Pty) Ltd is a joint venture between the National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) and African Selection Fishing (Namibia) Pty Ltd. African Selection Fishing Namibia (ASFN) is 95% Namibian-owned.

Lockdown! Walvis Bay returns to level 1 lockdown between 2 and 8 June
Walvis Bay returns to the Covid-19 lockdown as from midnight on Monday night, after two people tested positive for the Coronavirus. The rest of the country move on to stage 3 at the same time. For Walvis Bay the status quo will remain until 8 June. An extension of this lockdown remains on the table beyond that date. Under level 1, Walvis Bay residents will be under the following obligations: only leave place of residence to buy essential food items. Only essential services will be allowed to operate. School children will not return to school on 3 June, as is the case with the rest of the country. The buying and selling of alcohol is not permitted. Covid-19 truck drivers told lies The regional councillor for the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency, Cllr Knowledge Ipinge, sits with egg on the face over his handling of the matter in which a truck driver at a local transport company tested positive for the Coronavirus. Two truck drivers of F.P. du Toit Transport/Wesbank were dismissed recently after it was found they flouted quarantine rules by leaving the premises of the transport company where they were kept under compulsory self-quarantine. They were subjected to quarantine after trips to South Africa. The quarantine of truck drivers is standard safety procedure to combat the spread of the Coronavirus. The two truckers left the premises and visited various places in Walvis Bay, among others the Walvis Bay branch of Standard Bank Namibia. They were intercepted by the Namibian Police after anonymous tip-offs from the public. Upon learning this, they were subjected to an investigation and internal disciplinary inquiry by Wesbank Transport and subsequently dismissed. After their dismissal, the two truckers were accommodated in Government quarantine facilities where the one driver tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19). In the days after their dismissal, the drivers commenced waging a campaign against their former employer F.P. du Toit Transport/Wesbank Transport using some media practitioners and also drawing in Cllr Ipinge in the process. In this regard allegations are the one truck driver in question is a close friend of Cllr Ipinge. There were allegations: 1. They (the drivers) were never informed of their rights and duties with regard to Covid-19 safety and the workplace. 2. Allegations were made they never received food during the days under quarantine at one of the premises of the transport company in Walvis Bay. 3. The ablution facilities were only made available to them during office hours (08:00 till 17:00 Mondays to Fridays). After one of the truck drivers tested positive, Cllr Ipinge directed letters to Standard Bank and F.P. du Toit Transport/Wesbank ordering the immediate closure of all relevant premises in Walvis Bay in the interest of “public health�. From the transporter were demanded Covid-19 business continuity plans, reports of the disciplinary hearings, list of employees and members of the public that visited the premises. With several days that have passed since the worker tested positive, Namib Times established neither the transport company nor the bank closed. Both businesses were in constant contact with the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Windhoek which is tasked with Namibia's Covid-19 response. Cllr. Ipinge, despite being “an authorised officer” in terms of the Disaster Risk Management Act has no powers whatsoever to order the closure of businesses nor does he have any powers to make any form of demands to these businesses given the specific Covid-19 scenario. “Namibia's Covid-19 response is driven by the Ministry of Health and Social Services. Since this unfortunate situation became known we have been in constant contact with the relevant authorities including the Namibian Police. We have done everything possible to mitigate this situation and we are confident given the unfortunate incident all premises of F.P. du Toit Transport/Wesbank is safe both for our workers and for our customers”, explained the Company's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Stephan Terblanche. Terblanche, on a question by Namib Times whether the one truck driver dismissed by his company is a good friend to Cllr. Knowledge Ipinge, declined to comment and said his focus is to manage the company under these very challenging economic conditions and to do so sustainably and with the health and safety of every employee and customer at hand. He opted not to be drawn into fringe issues. On a question to Terblanche whether the two truck drivers in question knew what were expected of them in terms of Covid-19 protection he explained he has no doubt they were duly aware of their rights and duties. “We have information placards on all our premises translated into all Namibian languages. These materials are visible not only to workers but also to the public. We have various internal communications platforms between management and the company's workers – including to our truck drivers. I will not entertain any allegations of this nature as this is blatantly false”, said Terblanche. He further explained since the situation around Covid-19 started to develop, not only in Namibia but also the SADC Region, they took various initiatives to help combat the spread of the Coronavirus. Each worker of the company, numbering close to 1000 people, were supplied with immune boosters (totalling 214 000 tablets) to ensure people maintain a strong immune system against infection. Employees were sent on the company's expense to receive flu-injections and all workers were issued with personal protection equipment and sanitisers to be able to protect themselves against infection. “As I explained, we don't want to be drawn into fringe issues. As an employer F.P. du Toit Transporter/Wesbank does its utmost best to keep its people and its customer safe and we will do so in a transparent and honest manner”. On allegations the two truck drivers never received meals whilst under quarantine or had access to ablution facilities, Terblanche presented a different picture. “Truck drivers under quarantine have a choice: you are provided with three meals or you order the food of your choice you pay for with a nights-out allowance. If you receive the company's meals, you don't receive get a nights-out allowance. If you receive the nights-out allowance you buy your own food of your choice with it”. An employee of Wesbank Transport is tasked to take the orders, purchase the food and deliver it to them through the security office. The two drivers opted for nights-out allowance and indicated their families will be bringing them food regularly. “To accuse us of not having provided them with meals is untrue and misleading. We have a system in place to proof the contrary”, concluded Terblanche. Adding the same goes for the lies they spread of not having access to ablution facilities. During office hours the facilities are open, but after hours it is locked and the key left at security. It is a matter of collecting the key and use the facilities.
“Namibia's 5th National Development Plan (NDP5) wants to establish the country as the key fisheries and processing hub in the South West Atlantic Ocean by 2022. Namibia's fishing industry is the third largest income earner after mining- and tourism so it only makes sense to grow this sector's income generating and job creation capacities. Seaflower Pelagic Processing adds its full weight behind what the Namibian Government wants to achieve for this country through NDP5 and for that matter all subsequent national goals we set for ourselves”, explained the Company's general manager, Adolf Burger this week. Burger added the Company will continue to focus on its key goals and will not be dancing to the tunes of detractors. The cannery consists of six cutting tables and eight retorts. It can work 15 metric tons of fish per hour. Although the cannery will mainly concentrate on the canning of horse mackerel, it could also produce canned pilchard and canned sardinella if these species are available for processing. Of the 450 people that would be employed by the cannery, approximately 70% will be women, explained Burger. Preference will be given to former UFE canning staff as well as the youth.

Woman raped in dunes Eileen van der Schyff
A 29-year-old woman's walk into the dunes for prayer session turned into an unimaginable nightmare after falling prey to a rapist. The woman, from Kuisebmond, was overpowered, robbed and raped at knife point by an unknown male. The incident occurred at around 09:00 on Monday. The perpetrator approached the woman and demanded her cellphone. When the woman responded she has no cell phone, the suspect took out a knife and forced himself on the defenceless woman. Inspector Ileni Shapumba of the Namibian Police in Erongo Region urged vulnerable people to use common safety guidelines no matter what. Even if you go into secluded places to pray, avoid being alone or refrain from going to places where you can become a victim of crime and no one nearby to assist you out of trouble or who can raise the alarm. The same principle applies for women going jogging or cycling alone. Women in particular are reminded to have common sense prevail when it comes to their personal safety. That includes moving at night, moving through secluded places, personal safety when moving in public places or even safety at home.
5 shacks destroyed by fire Sharlien Tjambari
At around 13:00 on Tuesday, a fire broke out at house no 2686 in Tulinawa location, Mondesa. The fire started in one shack and spread to the other four shacks in the same yard in a matter of minutes. It is alleged the owner of the shack was at work when the fire broke out. There was no one at her shack when the incident took place. The Swakopmund Fire Brigade arrived at the scene a few minutes later, but at the time the fire already caused devastating damage. Nobody was injured in the process and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Berta Megano Risias needs help with 3rd degree burnwound Berta Megano Risias got burnt with hot water from a kettle on 21 December 2019. Her condition has since worsened because of the lack of finances for medical intervention. The only treatment Berta gets at the moment, is wound care at a local clinic and the state hospital. Sons and daughters of Usakos donate to the less fortunate Rudi Bowe
Former residence of Usakos “Sons and Daughters of Usakos” donated food to the value of N$50 000 to less fortunate residents of the town. The group that include Simon Uirab, the Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Honourable Agnes Tjongarero, National Assembly member Natalia Goagoses, Madam Joan Guriras and many other notable people of the town handed the food parcels to the Governor of the Erongo region Neville Andre who handed it to the mayor of Usakos His Worship Akser Mwafangeyo and the regional councillor of the Karibib constituency, who will distribute it to needy community members. Andre said the donation “Sons and Daughters” from Usakos comes in very handy, especially since our people need food. These parts of our region is home to mostly farmers, who have severely been affected by droughts for the past seven years, leaving many with no cattle or income.
Andre said “Many of the residents of the town also rely heavily on small mining activities, but due to COVID – 19 regulations, most of these miners too were robbed of an income and this, coupled with the little economic activities offered, has undoubtedly impacted many households.” Andre added “I am informed that the Town Council was only able to give food to 150 people but that the Group under the leadership of Mr Simon Uirab, decided to collect and purchase food to the value of N$50 000, which will enable a larger number of beneficiaries to benefit from this food distribution. “I am therefore, very pleased about this initiative and salute and thank everybody who made this possible as well as some former residents who now live in other parts of Namibia, collected funds to supplement town council's efforts,” Andre said.

Cricket awakes from lockdown Rudi Bowe
With only five months to the T20 World Cup, The Eagles (Namibia’s national mens cricket team) commenced with training at Wanderers in Windhoek. Cricket Namibia is glad to be one of the sporting codes that received the green light from the Sports Commission to commence training as a non-contact sport. 2020 is a historic year for Namibian Cricket. The Eagles will participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. That is if travel- and sports bans are lifted amidst the global Covid19 pandemic. Despite practicing, there are still COVID-19 safety regulations to be followed. After many weeks of lockdown The Eagles must put in extra effort to regain optimal physical fitness and to prepare themselves to return to the competition. The Women’s national cricket team also commenced with training. Coach Gareth Cloete takes care of players in Windhoek and Gerrie Snyman at the coast. Training sessions with the National Cricket
Academy and Development Players at the coast also commenced at the Walvis Bay cricket oval. The Junior Coastal Cricket Academy also resumed. Training sessions are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with players divided in different time slots to observe social distancing. The junior players of Blue Waters Cricket Club will soon resume with training in Kuisebmond. They will abide to the COVID19 stage 2 regulations during training. Sparta Cricket Club also commenced with practice sections last week. Groups of five players at a time take part in these training sessions. Note: The Sparta Cricket Academy also opened its doors with one-on-one sessions. Children interested to play cricket are welcome. Call Esau Heynes at 081 753 7099.
