N$28 million roof replacement project for 2000 houses in Arandis Town wants to be asbestos-free in “It is now a race three years against the tide” Sharlien Tjambari

Arandis wants to be asbestos free in the course of the next three years. This mammoth task would cost N$28 million and require the replacement of asbestos roof sheeting with zinc-aluminium sheeting on nearly 2000 houses.

These houses were constructed in the 1970's when the dangers of asbestos to human health, more specifically the respiratory system was very little known of. The project to replace the roof sheeting will be undertaken by the A r a n d i s To w n Council, in conjunction with the Rio Tinto Rössing Uranium Mine. The Roofing Upgrade Program is themed: "Arandis Roofing Project is Always on the Move". According to the Mayor of Arandis, Risto Kapendah, the zinc-aluminium sheets which will be replacing the asbestos sheeting are both health and environmental friendly. Asbestos is a soft grey-white fibre material which was used as roofing back in the days when the dangers of this material was very little known. Asbestos roofing is still prevalent, not

only at Arandis but also in the coastal town of Walvis Bay. Asbestos fibre accumulates in the human lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract and the most prevalent disease it causes is asbestosis. Most diseases caused by asbestos results in its victim dying a slow and agonising death caused by severe oxygen starvation. The project is phased over three years, at a total of N$28 million. In the first phase of the project, a total of 833 roofs will be replaced. These are houses classified as the most urgent for roof replacement. According to Kapendah, the project will commence on 3 April. The replacement is free of charge. The Arandis Town Council became aware of the dangers of asbestos after a study was conducted in 2004 by Rössing, to identify the risks associated with the closure of the mine. The asbestos roofs of houses constructed by

the mine was identified as one of the key points to address. "The Arandis Town Council is the first town in Namibia to undertake this type of project. It is undertaken in the spirit of service excellence and smart partnership",explained Kapendah during a press conference on Tuesday. The mayor added all other possible danger areas involving asbestos has been removed and the roofing of the houses are the only remaining obstacle to clear. Residents of Arandis have been engaged over what this roof replacement project entails and what their rights and duties are. Residents of the homes will be required to vacate their abodes when it is their turn and temporary housing will be provided. "It is the vision of Arandis Town Council to be independent and a viable town that is known as the centre of excellence. Continues on Page 2

Salvage of Japanese fishing vessel - “it is now a race against rough seas”

The vessel's engine room flooded in the past few days and the ship cannot generate its own electricity any more. Due to the expected rough seas the crew of the vessel was evacuated this week and oil pollution prevention materials were transported to the scene to prepare for the worst – an oil spill should the vessel break up in

rough seas. A diesel spill has already occurred, but salvage expert Paul van der Merwe of Walvis Bay Diving yesterday explained diesel evaporates and poses far less a risk than oil pollution. Hence the preparations in advance, as prevention is better than cure. Walvis Bay Diving has extensive experiencing in salvage operations and

has partnered up with several international salvage operators to accomplish the task. All eyes will be on the salvage tug SA Amandla which will try today [Thursday] and tomorrow to pull the stricken vessel off the rocks back into deep water, before the rough seas expected over the weekend arrives.

Financial mismanagement of trusts at the heart of discontent among the Topnaars A faction within the Topnaar community on the banks of the Kuiseb River southeast of Walvis Bay says the lives of people in the area cannot improve unless income from fishing quotas and tourism concession levies are properly managed and distributed. The faction, who in general also does not support the chieftainship of the To p n a a r s S e t h Kooitjie this week called upon the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development as well as the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to speed up and implement

several preliminary recommendations already made in mid2016 by the Anti-Corruption Commission of Namibia (ACC) to improve the management of trust monies meant for the Topnaars. In a document submitted to namib times this week it was confirmed the ACC after

an investigation found that at least four trusts are currently in place to "manage the affairs" of the Topnaar community. In addition, all these trusts have separate bank accounts and cannot account for large sums of money spent. Among others that cash cheques were

used to withdraw monies, but no receipts or other source documents were generated to explain what these expenses were for. A large portion of the income of these trusts are generated through levies for tourism concessions and fishing quotas. The ACC in its preliminary recommen-

dations stated it is unclear who or what entities have shareholding in these fishing entities. Allegations are made from the faction in the Topnaar community that a small elite exists within the Topnaar community who are benefiting from the income of the tourism concessions. The ACC recommended all trusts should be winded up and a single trust and a

single bank account should be established. Trustees must be appointed and the Trust should be managed according to financial, account and legal principles. A source in the ACC confirmed this week that an investigation against Chief Seth Kooitjie, the Topnaar chief has been ongoing since 2013. The investigation came across irregularities, but it is belie-

ved at this stage that mismanagement and a lack of financial accountability is at the heart of the problem. Hence a report was forwarded to the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development and also the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to take control of matters as far as it concerns these Ministries.

Crew safely evacuated from Former Walvis Bayâ€™ites at logger heads at CoW stricken Japanese fishing vessel The entire crew of sixteen people has been evacuated from the stricken Japanese fishing vessel, Fukuseki Maru, that ran aground near Cape Cross on the night on 21/22 March. The evacuation was carried out by helicopter. The crew members were in the meantime transported to Walvis Bay and is accommodated at the Casa Mia Hotel in Walvis Bay. It is reported the crew will for now not be repatriated to their countries of origin but will be moved to the site where the ship ran aground to assist as helpers at the scene where the ship ran aground.

The City of Windhoek confirmed this week the suspension of its City Police Chief Abraham Kanime on suspicion of mismanagement of public funds. Kanime is a former regional commander of the Namibian Police in Erongo and was based at Walvis Bay. An internal investigation was commissioned into the allegations against Kanime.

Ironically, at the helm of the allegations against Kanime is the Chief Executive Officer of the City of Windhoek (CoW), Robert Kahimise. Kahimise is also a former Walvis Bay resident who headed regional electricity distributor Erongo RED as chief executive officer. Kahimise started his term as CEO of City of Windhoek in January 2017.

On Tuesday 27 March 2018 three tourists that were travelling from Walvis Bay to Windhoek on C14 gravel road, with a motor vehicle registration number CA 138670 were in an accident. The 60-year-old Heidi Diemunt Konarzik, a Dutch citizen, lost control over the vehicle on a sharp curve, the vehicle left the road and overturned. She sustained slight injuries and is in a stable condition in the Welwitchia Private Hospital in Walvis Bay. Ms Konarzik was with her two friends Inga Maria Victoria a 25-year-old Dutch citizen and Sigh Khabeeray Prithiraj a 40-year-old South African citizen in the vehicle. The two passengers sustained no injuries. They were brought to the Welwitchia Private Hospital by St Gabriel Ambulance, where the driver received medical treatment.

Swakopmund Correctional facility celebrates the NCS Day in style Sharlien Tjambari

Namibian Correctional Services Day was commemorated in Swakopmund on Tuesday with the Swakopmund Correctional Facility (SCF) at the helm of the events. All correctional facilities countrywide had similar commemorations, including at Walvis Bay. This event is held annually on 27 March. A march was organised that started from Mondesa Woerman Brock and ended at the Swakopmund Correctional Facility (formerly known as the Swakopmund Prison). Senior Superintendent Erwin Axakhoeb of the SCF explained 27 March as Namibian Correctional Services Day was declared by the former Head of State Hifikepunye Pohamba in 2007. The aim, according to Axakhoeb is to allow the NCS to reflect, assess and take stock of achievements and notable successes. The main aim of correctional services is to rehabilitate offender and to see to the re-integration of inmates who served their sentenced into Namibian society. The NCS can be very proud on its achievements. Most notably is the fact that the NCS is totally self sufficient in terms of maize, wheat and pork production. These products are produced at NCS farms

and inmates are taught the essentials of farming on these projects. Other programmes the NCS is driving with success after success is the conversion of correctional facilities into modern, architecturally appealing facilities where inmates are rehabilitated under a correctional strategy. Also the roll-out of an offender risk management system and the career development of correctional services staff. â€œBut, there are challengesâ€?, admitted Senior Superintendent Axakhoeb. He listed staff shortages and shortage of office space for correctional staff as paramount. Then there is also times when the resources are limited and everyone has to best manage with what is available to keep correctional services functioning optimally and for correctional services to carry out its mandate. The days was rounded off with cultural performances and games.

Erasmus was arrested in Swakopmund on 20 March and transferred to Windhoek where he on 22 March made a first appearance before a magistrate. After a submission by Erasmus' legal representative the State agreed the matter was a civil matter. The complainant alleges he paid Erasmus a sum of money for the delivery of concrete, but that this never materialized. A source close to Erasmus' legal representation confirmed yesterday that Erasmus will now proceed with a civil suit against the Minister of Safety Security for illegal detention. SA Amandla on salvage mission of Japanese Tuna long line vessel The South African salvages vessel SA Amandla has arrived off Cape Cross over the weekend to part-take in the salvage operation to refloat the Japanese tuna long liner Fukuseki Maru that ran aground last Wednesday. Preparations are ongoing to make the first attempt next week to pull the vessel off the rocks when the tides are exceptionally high during spring tide. New class rooms and kitchen at School The Kuisebmond Primary Project School is the proud owners of eight additional classrooms and a kitchen. The class rooms were constructed by Frans van Zyl from NCO Investments for the Ministry of Education and handed over to the school's principal by the Charles Neidel from the Ministry and Mr Frans van Zyl. The school required assistance of the community and business to help with the set up a feeding scheme for the 1333 learners that is currently accommodated at the school. The Principal of the school Ms Emily Ndemula request the local business community to help the school start with its feeding scheme for the1333 learners that is currently accommodated at the school.

Ms Ndemula said, â€œWe have a kitchen, but still need a stove, pots, cutlery, a refrigerator and cupboards and in addition the school is also in need of Good Samaritans to assist with food for the learners. As this is n new school that was only established last year, so we need all the help we can get. Many of these learners come to school with nothing to eat, and this prevents them from concentrating in class.â€? The kitchen was built at no charge by Frans van Zyl from NCO Investments. He named it after his wife, Fransie Van Zyl. He was also the builder contracted by the ministry of education, arts and culture to build the eight classrooms at a cost of N$120 000 per classroom.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Sandwich Harbour - mehr als nur Dünen und Meer

Walvis Bay (mw) Unsere Erwartungen sind sehr hoch: hatten wir doch schon viele herrliche Fotos von den scharfkantigen Dünen direkt am blauen Meer gesehen, und schon viele Besucher hatten uns über den Ausflug nach Sandwich Harbour vorgeschwärmt. Endlich fahren auch wir dorthin, nachdem wir den perfekten Tag mit Ebbe zu Mittag herausgesucht hatten. Ekkhardt von Mola Mola erweist sich als sehr belesener und humorvoller Guide, der tiefen feuchten Sand und hohe Dünen mit viel Erfahrung zu meistern weiß. 1 Mio Tonnen Salz pro Jahr, demnächst sollen es nach den Plänen der größten Salzfabrik im südlichen Afrika sogar 2 Mio sein - das geht natürlich nicht ohne gewisse Einschnitte in die Natur, wie wir beim Durchqueren der unzähligen Salzbecken im Kuiseb Delta erleben. Aber die namibische Wirtschaft braucht tragende Stützen - und das Salzwerk ist eine davon. Für Springböcke ist diese Landschaft ein guter Lebensraum, wie uns der noch sehr junge Nachwuchs zeigt. Im angrenzenden Namib-Naukluft-Park gibt es immer wieder Hinweise darauf, dass es vor nicht allzu langer Zeit sehr viel feuchter gewesen sein muss - so wie die humusreichen, also Süßwasser-Ablagerungen direkt am Strand belegen. In

Vorbei geht es an Resten von Holzhütten, offensichtlich Raststationen von Händlern, als Sandwich Harbour noch frei vom offenen Meer zugänglich war. Und dann endlich sind wir da. Der Blick von der hohen Düne auf die teilweise versandete Bucht ist überwältigend: Ein paar Nebelfetzen geben den Dünen ein interessantes Licht-Schattenspiel, und das tiefblaue Wasser wird durch rosa Flecken der Flamingos aufgelockert. Der Anblick wirkt auf uns berauschend und beruhigend zugleich - eine schier unendliche Weit und dabei kräftige und harmonische Farben. Für uns ist das hier eine der schönsten Stellen auf unserer Welt. Nach einem liebevoll arrangierten Lunch in Buffetform geht es durch

die Namib wieder zurück. Spritzige Fahrten die Dünen hinauf wechseln sich ab mit langsamem Herunterfahren in einer Neigung bis zu 36%, wobei ein dröhnendes Geräusch zu hören ist, das durch das Zusammendrücken der Sandkörner entsteht. Und immer wieder stoppen wir an atemberaubenden Ausblicken auf die Küstenlinie mit dem blauen Atlantik auf der einen Seite und der gelb-braunen Namib auf der anderen. Die Farben sind jetzt am späten Nachmittag noch tiefer und eindrucksvoller geworden. Ekkhardt zeigt uns einen Ort in den Dünen, an dem Süßwasser vorkommt, den Spuren nach hat hier ein Schakal gegraben und seinen Durst gelöscht (auch wir probieren davon!), oder eine andere Stelle, an der ca. 100 Jahre alte Scherben von Tongefäßen herumliegen, Überreste menschlicher Anwesenheit, daneben unzählige, offensichtlich sehr alte Muschelschalen und Knochen - also etwa eine Küche? Im Kuiseb Delta überraschen wir dann einen Nara-Dieb - ein Schabrackenschakal trägt eine grüne Narafrucht fort, und gleich nebenan bewachen Straußeneltern ihren Nachwuchs. Wir sind so voller Eindrücke und Emotionen, dass wir bei der restlichen Fahrt an der Küste entlang die Robben und Seevögel „links liegen lassen“. Es war ein sehr großer Tag für uns, und unsere hoch gesteckten Erwartungen wurden mehr als erfüllt.

Als er diese bekommen hat, lässt er den Korken knallen und ruft laut: "Prosit! Neujahr!" "Was soll denn der Quatsch?", weist ihn der Wirt zurecht. "Wir haben OSTERN!"“Ostern?", stammelt der Mann perplex. "Oh je, das gibt Ärger. So lange war ich noch nie feiern...” - Fritzchen hat direkt alle Ostereier alleine aufgegessen. Die Mutter schimpft: Hast du denn gar nicht an dein Schwesterchen gedacht? Sagt Fritzchen: Klar, deshalb habe ich mich ja so beeilt.”

Swakopmund (sk) Da Gaby Tirronen bereits zwei Konzerte zugunsten des namibischen Autisten-Projekts organisiert hat, ist ein Herr Pieter Willem Nuwab an sie herangetreten. Herr Nuwab ist ein Trompetenspieler, der auch schon in der Big Band von Christiane Ast geblasen hat. Nun ist er dabei, ein Blasorchester mit den sogenannten Straßenkindern in der DRC aufzubauen. Für dieses Unternehmen benötigt er anfänglich je zwei Sopran-, Alt-, Tenor- und Bass-Trompeten. Inzwischen hat Frau Tirronen sich diesbezüglich an den Leiter des Bläserensembles Riesa, Wolfgang Haufe, gewandt, der kürzlich mit seinem Blasorchester in Swakopmund auftrat.

Das ist ein Orchester, ausschließlich mit Blechinstrumenten besetzt, entstanden im ersten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts in England. Liebe Küstenleser! “Typisch Künstlerin”, hat mein Mann oft gesagt. Und er hatte Recht. Als Schreiberline und Cellobogenstreich(l)erin ist man so ‘n biekie doof, wenn es um die Realitäten des Lebens geht. Anders gesagt: Man lebt in den Sternen! Und wenn man obendrein einen VersorgertypEhegatten hatte, der sich um die Finanzen kümmerte, dann muss man erstmal ziemlich steinige Pads laufen mit klomp Klippen, Staub, Schlaglöchern und sonstigen Hindernissen - bevor man ein Stückchen geskraapte Pad da doer annakant am Horizont erblickt. Wenn der Hauptverdiener und Finanzminister der Familie auf einmal wegfällt, dann kommt zu der emotionalen Hürde nach dem Tod des geliebten Menschen auch die Anpassung in Sachen Knete, Moneten oder Ovimariva hinzu. Plötzlich schlagen einem von allen Seiten erbarmungslos Rechnungen um die Ohren, und zwar zum Teil aus Branchen, von denen man gar nicht wusste, dass sie überhaupt existieren. Tja, und somit beginnt für einen Menschen, der sich bisher von Bassschlüsseln, Buchstabensalat und über einen Familienversorger ernährt hat, der lange Lernprozess. Mit Stolz, liebe Küstenleser, kann ich Ihnen berichten, dass ich bereits so massiv dazugelernt habe, dass ich mich bei unserem schlettweinigen Calle, dem Finanzguru Namibias, als Finanzberaterin melden könnte. Mein VW Polo, der mich bisher immer treu und brav in die Richtung gerollt hat, in die er gelenkt wurde, musste bei einer gewissen Autowerkstatt hier in Swakopmund bietjie getscheckt werden, weil das Warnlicht des lebenrettenden

It is the first time in history that Namibia will be hosting an equestrian event of this magnitude incorporating Individual

and Team events in three disciplines, namely Show jumping, Dressage and Endurance. Furthermore the Namibian

Warmblood Society will be presenting a Young Horse event. NAMEF is honoured to have both the President of the Inter-

national Equestrian Federation (FEI) and the FEI Secretary General Sabrina Ibanez, present at the event, as well as Mary Binks, the chairman of Group IX and Lucinda Arsenio, the Liaison officer for the National Federations. FEI horse show The Walvis Bay Equestrian Centre will be hosting the very prestigious FEI World Jumping Challenge on 13th, 14th and 15th of April. The first leg is held here, followed by further events during the year. The participants will also be able to qualify for the championships in Algeria later this year.

Namibiaâ€™s Fast and Furious at the Easter Drags Easter weekend is here and once again it's time for the Easter drags in Walvis Bay. The Walvis Bay Easter drags is a success story that is coming on for a few years and it is getting bigger every year. Over the years, the event was improved, with fully functioning timing equipment. On Saturday, 31 March, Union Street will once again be closed and packed with fast cars and even faster mouths as organisation and competitor's will line up to put their cars where

their mouths are. Onlookers can be treated to one of the fiercest line-ups to date with what is to believe the best Easter drags ever hosted in the coastal town. Competitors from all over the country will be in the harbour town to show off their fast and furious cars. The gates will open at 09:00 with the first race to start at 11:00. The entry fees will be, N$50 for adults and N$20 for kids under 10 years. Refreshments will be available.

Easter weekend madness It's another weekend for all Car Enthusiasts, as usual Saturday it's the WBMC Easter drags and on Sunday will be very 1st Charity breakfast Run. All car enthusiasts, including every car that will partaking in the drags, all Walvis Bay and Swakopmund residents and everyone at the coast for the Easter Weekend, can come and give back to the ones who need it the most, the poor. On Saturday the Nissan team will be at the drags to collect your donation, like, blankets, toys, groceries or funds. All Walvis Bay car enthusiasts who would like to be part of history in the making, will meet on Sunday at Dunes Mall at 12:00 and Swakopmund Enthusiasts will meet at the same time at Platz am Meyer mall. We will then in the biggest convoy ever, from both sides, drive to Afrodite Beach for a video and photo shoot at 13:00. After the video and photo shoot, join us for

another big convoy to Swakopmund for another day of car madness, at the Swakopmund Spin city. The rest of the Sunday the Spinners from DSD and the rest of the coast will entertain us with some creative spins. Our team will collect donations that couldn't be made earlier or on Saturday. Remember, we all are Namibians, and we must give back to the poor.

Navy ended fourth The Nave Volleyball Club and the Swakopmund Volleyball Club participated in the NVF Bank Windhoek DOC Tournament that was held in Swakopmund, at The Dome Swakopmund Volleyball club fell out in the group game and the boys from the Navy club ended fourth, after losing 2-0 to the NDF volleyball club in the play off for the third place. Congratulations to all the 2018 Bank Windhoek NVF Doc tournament winners and every club that formed part of the event. Cana Zone IV Swimming Championships A Namibian team consisting of 10 swimmers took part in the Cana Zone IV Swimming Championship that was held in Lilongwe Malawi from 21 March 2018 – 24 March 2018. The championships were held in a 25 meter pool, in other words it was a short course meet.

The team was Maximilian Bets (14 years), Nico Esslinger (12 years) Jureck Johannessson (17 years), Corné Le Roux (15 years), Matthias Lichtenberg (18 years), Hannah Murphy (14 years), Trisa Mutumbulua (13 years), Ariana Naukosho (10 years) Ju-Ané Oberholzer (16 years) and Darren Van Rensburg (16 years) and Zuné Weber (17 years). Jean Michael Leitner was the coach and Bern Esslinger the team manager. The following countries participated in the championships - Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The men's team came 6th out of a total of 14 countries and the women's team came 8th. Combined, Namibia

came 8th. Corné Le Roux achieved the highest FINA Points for a single swim (meaning he had the single best performance), scoring 619 FINA points, with his swim of 2:07.36 in the 200m Fly for men 15-16 years. With this swim he also broke his own 200m Fly short course record for men 15-16 years which stood at 2:10.19. It is also a new Namibian Open Record. The team won a total of 23 medals (6 gold, 4 silver and 13 bronze). The medal winners were- Ju-Ané Oberholzer (2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze), Corné Le Roux (2 gold and 1 silver), Zuné Weber (1 gold and 3 bronze), Jureck Johannesson (1 gold and 2 bronze), Nico Esslinger (1 gold and 1 bronze), Matthias Lichtenberg (2 bronze), and Maximilian Betts (1 bronze)

Social Indoor Soccer Bonanza

The winning Team Kaizer Chiefs The indoor soccer bonanza that was held at the Jan Wilken Indoor Complex, entered 6th year of existence. The first of three tournaments for the year was held last Friday and Saturday was a huge success, as 15 teams participated in the tournament. Part of the fund that was raised at the tournament was used as price money for the winning team. The rest of the funds will be donated to Cameron Nash to help with her studies. The final was played between Kaizer Chiefs and

Mc Dept Collecting with the Chiefs won the game 5-3. The next tournaments will be played in the month of July, and the last one, in October. The organisers are also busy with an indoor league that will kick off soon.
