Swakopmund Deputy Mayor, Clr Maria Elago, has now taken a firm stance against the rising crime wave in the holiday town. She yesterday strongly condemned the recent slayings of three elderly people in Swakopmund. During a meeting yesterday, she said the Town Council will "pull up its socks and address these issues.� " A s t h e To w n Council, we condemn the brutal killing of our people. We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the families," she said. Elago was referring to the murder of the Strzelecki couple in their home at the beginning of August, followed by a second murder only two weeks later of Manfred Hartmann, also in his home. The suspect is still in hospital after he was allegedly shot by police officers at Outjo whilst attempting to evade arrest (namib times reported). In the weeks before the murders of the elderly people, a number of other senseless murders also shook Swakopmund, the wider coastal region and Erongo.
"Our community needs to change their behavior," Elago continued. She added that it is a "problem" as innocent people are being killed, just because the culprits wish to enrich themselves. "We need to change this behaviour. We need to organise meetings with the leaders of our community. We need to sit around one table, be it Constituency Councilors, the Governor, church leaders, teachers," she said. According to Elago the change in behavior should start with the children. Parents have the primary role, followed by teachers. "We have to talk to the youth about these issues", she said. Elago urged Swakopmund Town Councilors to push for a more aggressive enforcement of municipal by-laws, in an attempt to curb the
rising crime wave. "We need to pull up our socks and address the issue of hawkers, who are harassing our people and tourists", she said. The Deputy Mayor also said the implementation of a CCTV camera system in Swakopmund must be "brought back to the table and it needs to be fasttracked." As the main suspects in both of the abovementioned murder cases were employed with the victims, Elago said that the municipality together with the police is busy working on an initiative to have all domestic workers, especially those who are working for elderly people, go through a screening process and for them to be registered. Erwin Leuschner Members of the Namibian Police traced the driver of this white Daihatsu sedan vehicle, which was found on the beach close to Vierkantklip, next to the B2 costal road early on Friday morning. The accident is believed to have happened just after 01:00, but initially there were no signs of the driver of this ill-fated vehicle.
According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the 27year old driver was found at his friend's house in the Mondesa suburb. "He alleged that he was alone in the vehicle during the incident and that he was trying
to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming truck," Iikuyu said. The driver further stated that he did not sustain any but nonetheless complained of pain in his right shoulder. Why he absconded from the scene is unclear. The white sedan was initially reported by a passerby at about
01:15. It is suspected that the driver was travelling from the direction of Walvis Bay towards Swakopmund. The driver lost control over the vehicle. The car crashed through the barrier poles, rolled and landed on the beach where it was soon submerged by the surf. Continues on Page 2

CHEC - a Chinese success story in Namibia
A recent article in the New York Financial Times and soon to appear in the Washington Post describes how the current container project on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay and the future bulk fuel terminal and fuel storage facility is transforming Walvis Bay. Journalist Confidence Musariri in the said article said these projects are regarded as a Chinese success story in Namibia. China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC) is the contractor in these massive projects.The container terminal on reclaimed land will more than double the port of Walvis Bay's annual container handling capacity and the fuel storage facility will enhance Namibia's stockpile capacity 15 days to 45 days, according to the article which is also to be translated in Mandarin by Xinhua Net, China's biggest news agency.

Applications available countrywide The WB We Care Trust was established in 2009 with the aim of offering support to bona fida groups who actively assist orphans and and those affected by the devastating effects of HIV/Aids. Communities in and around towns with WB stores are invited to apply to become beneficiaries of the WB We Care Trust. According to Jesko Woermann, CEO of the local group, more should to be done to alleviate the difficult circumstances with which so many Namibians battle every day. In order to ensure that the support given by the WB We Care Trust does not go to waste and is administrated properly, an official application must be submitted by groups is need. Contributions are then given in the form of a WB We Care card which is
topped-up monthly and can be used to buy necessary products from their local WB Store. Administrators of the trust also pay regular visits to beneficiaries to evaluate the use of the support. Desalination can turn Erongo into a bread basket The Governor of the Erongo Region, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua reiterates the importance of acquiring the Areva desalination plant located at Wlotzkasbaken and at the same time building a second similar desalination facility to ensure sufficient supply of water in the region. Clr Mutjavikua made these remarks recently in Swakopmund at the commissioning ceremony of a brick making machine to the DRC community for brick manufacturing. The machine can be rented by community members to produce bricks to contruct their own homes. A day Swakopmund will never forget Messages of support and comfort stream in from across Namibia for Johan and Leonie Swanepoel of Dolphin Pharmacy and Dr Rüdiger Moisel after a fire gutted the pharmacy and consulting room on Tuesday. An electrical short circuit is believed to have started the inferno in which, miraculously, everyone escaped unharmed. According to a preliminary investigation, the fire started a few minutes before 14:30 in the consulting room of Dr. Moisel. The building is situated on the corner of Sam Nujoma Avenue and Nathaniël Maxuilili Street with the pharmacy occupying most of the floor space. It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in electrical installations located behind the receptionist desk. The outbreak of the fire was noticed almost immediately and a fire extinguisher was immediately at hand. However, the flames spread so rapidly that soon there was nothing people could do, other than to evacuate the building. Helalia Petrus is an eighteen-year-old learner at De Duine Secondary School, and she has found a talent for making furniture which she sells as a means of income. Helalia has been making various chairs and tables by reusing old furniture frames and strapping. She makes these furniture pieces in a matter of hours, and sells them just as fast. Helalia has been doing very well with her project, but runs out of supplies every now and then. Money she makes does not always cover the needed equipment. Spring school help elevates regions ranking in terms of performance in education Sharlien Tjambari
A total of 480 learners attended the grade 12 Spring School this year. The Spring School which aims at improving learners grades in the final examination commenced on Monday, 21 August and ended on 25 August. It is the mandate of the Erongo Regional Office to educate, broaden the horizon, and ensure that many learners do graduate with high grades to the next level. " We so not want to leave anything to chance but rather create opportunities for our learners whenever possible to benefit from programs at their disposal hence the grade 12 Spring school " said the Chief Education Officer and Spring School Coordinator Ms. Natalia Guriras. She continued: "Striving for excellence and wanting to remain on top means doing extraordinary things, stretching everyone's ability and potential as far as possible. It means going an extra mile in whatever we do." According to Guriras, the purpose of the spring school is to reinforce certain areas of the syllabus, give individual attention to learners in solving problems faced in certain subjects, sharpen learner's skills and the spring school is also a platform where learners interact with fellow learners and to seek ways of better study methods and exchange information. English, Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology, Accounting, Business Studies, Geography and History are the subjects which were offered during the spring school. According to Guriras, the number of learners who attended the spring school this year dropped because of limited resources, "normally we included learners from Omaruru, Karibib and Usakos but this year we only took learners from Arandis, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay" said Guriras. Schools in Attendance this year were Swakopmund Secondary School, Namib High School, Coastal High School, Westside High School, Duinesig Combined School, De Duine Secondary School, Kuisebmund Secondary School, Tutaleni High School and Duneside High School. Guriras also thanked Swakop Uranium, for the sponsorship of N$150 000. namib times had a chat with three learners to see what they gain from the spring school. 路 Hanganeni Sakaria a science field learner from Swakopmund Secondary School who attended the Grade 10 spring school two years back, said the only difference between the two is that it is a must to be co-operative in class, listen to the teachers and do exactly as you are told. "The experience is amazing, it is nice to change teachers and see how other teachers teach their learners. The booklets of past examinations we get from the spring school
will definitely help us past our final examinations" said Sakaria. The learners also had the opportunity to share their problems with the teachers and they solved problems together and Sakaria said it is nice because they catch up on work missed during the two terms. 路 Klaudia Ekandjo also a science field learner, from Duinesig Combined School said this was her first time to attend spring school. Ekandjo said she has benefited greatly from the spring school. "I have benefited from the spring school and I feel that the teachers here are more clear than the ones at my school and there are a lot of new things which I picked up, this is adding more to what I already know and although I am a higher level learner, there were a lot of content I missed which I picked up here which will help me pass my grade at the end of the year" said Ekandjo. Advising fellow learners, Ekandjo said they should consider giving spring school a chance. It is the best opportunity and she said she learned a lot. 路 Victor Naweseb from Westside High School said he didn't have the opportunity to attend the grade 10 spring school as he was schooling in the north that time. "So this year when I was told about the spring school I felt like I definitely had to be part of it, because it is free education and as an optimistic person I want to grab everything that I can get for free" adds Naweseb. He said his experience from the spring school was very good because he had the opportunity to interact with learners from other schools and learn from each other. He also said the booklets they received were beneficial, because it was a lot of old question paper which they had to answer and even though they could not remember all the answers, it gave them an idea of what they needed to study. It also showed them where they stood and how much they still need to study, " I feel like with this help I am really going to pass my exams because I now have a better and clear picture of what I still need to do" 路 Ms. Natalia Guriras the Chief Education Officer said: "My experience from the spring school for the past 15-years has been awesome thus far. The learners that have attended spring school so far were promoted to the next grade. In terms of performance, it is a boost. It elevates the region also when it comes to ranking, and as far as grade 12 results are concerned, we are ranked number one. So this is a good training ground to improve the results in the region. The learners are disciplined and with love we can handle them".

How to spring clean your finances Spring has almost sprung and lots of people are getting to spring clean their homes, dust out winter cobwebs and usher in the new season on a fresh note. However, your home is not the only thing that requires a good spring cleaning. Most people made financial plans and budgets they hoped to live by at the beginning of the year, so the time has come to take a look at them and clear out any financial cobwebs, as it were. “Just as we do with our homes when we spring clean them, we have to do the same with our finances. We need to re-organise our finances, clean out debt from every nook and cranny and even purge on the unhealthy spending habits we may have picked up in the years,” Standard Bank's PR and Communication's Manager, Surihe GaomasGuchu advised this week. She added that it is difficult for people to honestly assess what they are doing right and where they are falling short if they do not actually know what their finances look like under the surface. Here are a few steps from Gaomas-Guchu on how to spring clean one's finances: · Start off by taking stock of all your accounts, your income, expenses and savings. This also means you will need to look at your bank charges for the last few months to make sure there are no fraudulent charges or unauthorised charges. This is also the ideal time to challenge your finances, audit them. This will give you a better understanding of the state your finances are in. · Once you have done the first step, you need to start checking in on your savings, investments and whatever other policies you might have taken out. Most people forget about them, especially when they have debit orders on them and are sometimes hit
with unpleasant surprises when they are in need of them. Check them to see that nothing is outdated or conditions have not changed and you are still entitled to the same benefits. · In as much as you probably tried budgeting and cutting expenses, there must be some unhealthy spending you
probably picked up along the way. Once you have taken stock of all your expenses it will become evident what unnecessary costs are draining your money and you will need to cut them out immediately. · Start keeping a spending diary. Sometimes it is hard to see what is actually siphoning your
money so the diary will actually come in handy and help you make the changes you need. · Lastly, reconnect with your financial goals for the remainder of the year and set new ones for the New Year as it is only four months away. Also find a way to ensure that you stick to these new goals you have set for

Namibian Windhoek Draught Welwitschias Lost opening match Contributed
On Saturday the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias lost their opening match in the Currie Cup First Division 66-59 to the Down Touch Griffons at the HT Pelatona ProjeStadium in Free State.
The high scoring encounter saw a total of 19 tries as the crowd were kept entertained for 80 minutes. Four first half tries by the home side saw allowed them to grab maximum points in the season opener. The Down Touch Griffons outscored the Welwitschias by ten tries to nine. A hat-trick for inside centre Arthur-William Williams and a brace apiece for Selvyn Davids and Vuyo Mbotho. The other tries for the Down Touch Griffons were scored by Barend Potgieter, Kwezi Mkhafu and Andrew du Plessis. Tries for the visitors came via a hat-trick from Darryl de la Harpe, Johan Tromp, Adriaan Booysen, Shaun du Preez, Mahco Prinsloo, Lesley Klim and Maharua Katjijeko. Both sides came out firing in the opening quarter of the match. The home side sneaked ahead 19-7 after tries from Potgieter, Davids and Mbotho with Duan Pretorius converting two of the three
tries. Welwitschias struck back via Booysen's five pointer following the earlier try from Tromp. Theuns Kotze converting both tries to make it a five point game, 19-14.It seemed like momentum was shifting away from the home side, but Williams scored the first of his three tries in the 16th minute. Pretorius' conversion extended the lead to 26-14. But it was the Namibian side who got the final say in the first half. Hooker Du Preez crashing over the tryline, the subsequent conversion missed, 26-19. The scoreboard would remain at 26-19 as the players headed into the locker rooms for the halftime break.In similar fashion to the first half, both sides made their intentions clear with a see-saw try scoring fest unfolding. Williams was the first to score as he darted over for his second.The match would go back and forth with the Griffons maintaining the lead but were never allowed to dominate as the visitors restricted them at crucial moments. Scores were tied at 45-all, with 25 minutes remaining on the clock. But Williams completed his hat-trick which Pretorius converted, 52-45. This lead was soon erased and scores were, once again, level, 52-52 as the match entered the last 20 minutes. The visitors took the lead for the first time, six minutes later, via Katjijeko. The lanky lock muscled his way over and Kotze added the extras, 52-59. The home side sealed the match in the last ten minutes, Mbotho completed his brace. Namibian Cricket team in to Africa T20 Cup Semi-Final The Namibian National Cricket team are through to the knockout stages of the Africa T20 Cup for the first time as they beat South Western Districts (SWD) in their final pool game. The Namibian team won all three their pool matches in Benoni, South Africa. The victories were against, Western Province, Easterns and South Western Districts (SWD). The semi-finals will be played on 24 September 2017. Namibia beat WP with an eight-wicket victory on Friday, and on Saturday beating Easterns by seven wickets. On Sunday,
Namibia won their third consecutive match after beating SWD by six wickets. With this victories Namibia has qualified for the semifinals that will be on 24 and 25 September 2017, as the Namibian team will joined the winners of the other three pools that still need to be determined. Cricket Namibia's U19 Ladies Team departure to Gaborone Botswana where they will compete in a 6 Nations International Cup from 24 – 27 August. The prestigious Tournament took off last year as an 8 Nations International U19 Girls Tournament where an abundance of talent was portrayed. It's unfortunate that recently Sierra Leone and Malawi withdrew due to unforeseen circumstances and will not be participating. The participants this year Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Swaziland, Gauteng RSA. On the 24 August 2017 – Namibia U19 vs Zambia U19 at BCA Gaborone. Namibia won by 98 runs, Ester Simeon Player of the Match with her 73 runs. On the 25 August 2017 – Namibia U19 vs Swaziland U19. Swaziland won the toss and elected to bat first. Swaziland made 46 runs and was bowled out in 15.2 overs . Namibia reached the target in 6.3 overs. Man of the match award to Namibia – Lea Gomaxas for her 2 wickets in 2 overs and only 2 runs! On 26 August 2017 – Namibia U19 vs Mozambique U/19. Namibia won the toss and elected to bat first. Namibia made 154/2 great partnership of 138 between Wilka Mwatile and Wilme Els. Mixed results for Gladiators against Swaziland The Brave Gladiators played and won their first international match of 2017 on Saturday as they emerged 3-2 winners against Swaziland while the Young Gladiators lost on penalties to the same opponents on Sunday afternoon at the NFA Technical Centre. The Gladiators used the game on Saturday to prepare for the upcoming Women's COSAFA games scheduled to take place from the 13 to 25th September in Zimbabwe and the first half was very tense, with both teams struggling to find an opportunity to create a goal. Both teams lacked confidence but that did not stop Twelikondjela Amukoto from securing the first goal for the Gladiators with a well taken header. Man of the match Anna Marie Shikusho scored two more goals before halftime. The second half saw the Swaziland women come back stronger and with better tactics and Celiwe Nkambule scored the first goal for her team and Ngobile Dlamini followed suit with a second goal when the team was granted a penalty. The interim Head coach of the Brave Gladiators, Brian Isaacs was pleased with the performance of the team. “The game was an eye opener and I am satisfied with the results. I substituted some players at half-time. I need to see how all the players perform, but adding the players changed the momentum and balance of the game. From now on I can work on today's performance and rectify before we leave for COSAFA”. On Sunday, there was contrasting result for the Young Gladiators as they lost 5-3 on penalties after a two-all draw. Kyle van Wyk gave the Young Gladiators the halftime lead and it was soon 2-0 in the second half through Lillie Kasheeta. But as the home side seemed to be in cruise control, Swaziland managed to force the game into a penalty shoot-out as they found two goals through Ngobile Dlamini. The Young Warriors used the match to prepare for their World Cup first leg qualifier against South Africa scheduled for 30 September in Johannesburg.

Felisianu to fight a three-star rated boxer in Manchester next month Sharlien Tjambari
This week Albinius "Danny – Feel the pain" Felisianu the IBF Lightweight Champion received news that he will be fighting for the WBO International Lightweight title on 23 September 2017 in Manchester City, England.
According to Felisianu the fight is a 10 round fight and he will be fighting against Joe Murray, a lightweight boxer who has only lost two and won 20 fights in his boxing career. John Murray is best known for winning a medal at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships in the bantam weight. The Namibian boxer, Felisianu have also lost two fights and won fourteen. Felisianu said he has a very good working relationship with Anita De Klerk from the Namibian MMA and Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay. He is using their gym for training to prepare for the upcoming fight. "I am very thankful to them for making their
gym available as well as an allowance give to me", Felisianu said. Abraham "Kakoto" Johannes, the owner of The Best Bar in DRC, is one of the sponsor of Felisianu. He expressed happiness for the opportunity to “invest” in Felisianu's boxing career. "I will never give up on Danny, because I belief in him and I can see that every bit of money I provide is put to good use. I am a businessman, but I do not make a lot of money. The Managing Director of Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Mr. AndrÊ Snyman on Friday morning at the closing of the cricket festival said his company is proud to be associated with this annual cricket event. Walvis Bay Salt Refiners, which is already operating for more than 50 year is also honoured to be involved in the development of young sports talent in the country through sponsoring events like this. A total of eighteen teams, representing ten schools from across the country took part in the festival this year. Of those, five teams were development teams. This made it the biggest festival of its kind so far and also the biggest in junior cricket history. Walvis Bay Salt Refiners’ social responsibility goes beyond junior cricket development, said Snyman. For the past twelve years the Company also sponsors the annual National Maths Congress, an event in which mathematics teachers of Namibia participate. With regard to cricket Snyman said he would want to see cricket enhancing its inclusiveness by having more girl's cricket teams participat-ing. The Coastal Cricket Festival is a special event and is a unique opportunity for every young cricketer to make a start through the ranks and perhaps one day represent Namibia at an international cricket tournament. Mr. Snyman trusted everyone apart from enjoying the cricket also enjoyed the stay in Walvis Bay. The event is proudly sponsored by Bank Windhoek, ErongoMed and African Deli. The best 12 male and 12 female volleyball teams in Namibia battle it out in the first round of the NVF Cup 2017. Each team has a tough time ahead, as only six teams each ultimately book their spot in the Bank Windhoek NVF Cup 2017 Round 2, which will take place on 15 & 16 September 2017 at UNAM Campus, Katima Mullilo. Please come and watch some amasing volleyball action and support these teams, at the Dome. Entrance cost N$20 per person per day. The FINALS of the NVF Cup 2017 will showcase the best 4 male & 4 female volleyball teams that qualified through from the first & second round in Swakopmund & Katima Mullilo earlier in September 2017. The Final is a one day competition to determine the Bank Windhoek NVF Cup 2017 Champions. These winners, one mens team and one ladies team will have the honour to be called the best male and female teams in Namibia for 2017. The finals will be played in Windhoek with the venue yet to be confirmed.
