NIMT unable to pay April salaries Floris Steenkamp The Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) had no option on Tuesday other than informing staff it cannot honour salaries due for April, as the Ministry of Education had not provided government funding to the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) or the Namibia Student Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF). The news came in the form of an internal memo to all staff by the Manager: Finance Mark Templin. The memo was leaked to namib times. “We are devastated. We are on the brink of a long weekend. Apart from facing an immediate financial difficulty to honour our financial commitments we are also stuck at home for the long weekend. What am I going to say to my family?” an audible stressed employee of NIMT said. In the memo the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture is pointed as responsible for the salary
fiasco. The Ministry is accused of not having made funds available to NTA and NSFAF. In the memo NIMT says it is looking at alternative arrangements and would pay the salaries when “practically possible”. NIMT plays a pivotal role in training Namibian artisans in a variety of fields. It has campuses in northern- and southern Namibia and Arandis.
Usakos and Karibib residents felt minor earthquake yesterday Erwin Leuschner Some residents of Usakos and Karibib felt a minor earthquake on Thursday afternoon. It struck between 14:00 and 15:00 and only lasted a few seconds. No damages or injuries were recorded. The Ministry of Mines and Energy received reports about the earthquake from residents, but has no statistics yet. “The office is busy compiling as report,” said Andreas Simon, Senior Public Relations Officer, at the ministry yesterday. The minor earthquake follows only weeks after a massive earthquake in Botswana which was felt across Southern Africa, including parts of the coastal region.

As the Fund continues to fulfil its mandate of investing in accident and injury prevention measures, the Fund and its road safety partners will engage in road risk awareness interventions, which include passenger safety, seatbelt usage, vehicle and driver fitness, and the #slowdowncampaign. The #slowdowncampaign amongst others focuses on creating awareness amongst drivers to slow down in urban areas in order to reduce pedestrian related crashes and resultant injury severity. The regional office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Swakopmund looks back on a productive 2016. A total of 42 new cases were recorded of which 19 were finalised, said head investigator Walter Kurz yesterday in Swakopmund during a debriefing to the local media. “Creating awareness of corruption can never be enough. It is an ongoing process and should never stop,”
said Kurz. During the briefing at the Office of the Governor, Kurz gave a brief overview of some notable cases
the ACC is investigating across Erongo. Some of these cases are being investigated in the coastal towns Walvis Bay and Henties Bay, whilst the local authorities of Karibib, Usakos and Omaruru have also come under the spotlight.

tinted was found to be suspicious. “This case it at an advanced stage,” Kurz confirmed to the media. Another case from Walvis Bay is being investigated at the Erongo Quarry whilst the third case involves the sale of light industrial erven. Kurz did not go into detail on account of protecting the integrity of the investigations. The ACC has conducted investigations all over the region and has another case from Usakos which is also at an advanced stage. It concerns the construction of a new office building. It is alleged that the tender for the construction of such was corruptly granted. “We face many challenges during our investigations,” Kurz added. In this regard, he noted certain ministries which refuse to hand over documentation. He also mentioned the judiciary, which in certain cases acts very slow. “We had a case, which was thrown out (of court) as the case was being postponed for too many time over a long period. The witnesses disappeared at the end”, he said. As it was later impossible to track the witnesses the suspect was released even though there was a “watertight case.” “I believe it would be a good thing if the ACC has its own court to prosecute cases” he ex-
plained. Adding it requires a lot of work to gather evidence and to prosecute white-collar crimes. Usually bank statements and many more documents are needed to make a case watertight. During the briefing Kurz also named cases in which suspects have been arrested. He mentioned the arrest of two suspects for alleged corruption at NATIS. The case involves the issuance of driving license and testing of vehicle roadworthiness. Another case where two suspects were apprehended, involves alleged corruption at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration. The immigration officials were arrested and it is believed that they corruptly issued and extended work permits. The ACC also arrested a police detective after it is alleged that he solicited a N$10 000 cash bribe in order to destroy a case docket. In another case one business person, who is the owner of a transport company, was arrested on charges of corruption after he allegedly bribed a Traffic Officer of Nampol with N$20 000. The ACC also arrested a Chinese national, who is believed to have solicited N$30 000 from a private business person from a security company in exchange to process a tax invoice for payment for service delivery.
Man found dead in Swakopmund guesthouse Erwin Leuschner
The police in the Erongo Region is investigating two cases of unnatural deaths which occurred recently in Swakopmund and Usakos respectively. The causes of death for Jasper Davis (38) as well as Werner Scholze (83) has not yet been determined. According to Erastus Iikuyu, Nampol, regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo the body of Jasper Jacobus Albertus Davis was found at a guesthouse in Swakopmund on Sunday 23 April. It is alleged that Davis booked himself in at the guesthouse on 22 April. His body was found lying on the bed by an employee who entered the room to clean. The Police is not ruling out a suicide, despite no suicide found. It is alleged that the deceased was suffering from cancer and had suicidal tendencies in the past. The investigation is ongoing. The Namibian Police is requesting the public to assist in tracing the son of a certain Werner Julius Scholze (83) whose body was found in Usakos on 17 April. According to Iikuyu his son resides in South Africa, but the police has been unsuccessful
in acquiring his contact details. Scholze was an Usakos resident, staying alone in a house in Parson Street in the suburb's Bo-dorp. According to neighbours they haven't seen Scholze in the week before his body was discovered. “One neighbour detected an unusual smell from the deceased's house and notified the police,” Iikuyu explained. Police officers broke a window to gain entry to the house. The house was securely locked and the house keys were found on a table inside. The police discovered a body which was taken to the Walvis Bay police morgue where a postmortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death and to confirm the deceased's identity. “The next of kin are yet to be located. Scholze's son we believe resides in South Africa, but no one knows his contact details,” Iikuyu explained.
Rössing records profit of N$ 107 Million despite collapse of uranium price Erwin Leuschner
Even though the global uranium market suffered a collapse in 2016, one of the biggest employers in the Erongo region, the Rössing Uranium Mine (RUL), managed to almost double its turnover in 2016 (N$3 billion) compared to 2015 (N$1.8 billion) and – for the first time in years – achieve a net profit of N$107 million. Namibia's oldest uranium mine Rössing will stay in operations until 2025 with an approved Life-of-Mine plan, even though the international uranium market is going through an extremely volatile and fragile state. This was revealed by Rössing CEO Werner Duvenhage on Monday in Windhoek when he presented the latest report to stakeholders and reflected on the past year. While the international uranium market has been on a significant downturn since the Fukushima disaster in March 2011, the uranium mine Rössing has a positive outlook on the future. “Following on 2015 that was a challenging year for the uranium mining industry, 2016 certainly stretched our resilience and determination to survive,” said Duvenhage. The financial situation at Rössing was less than desirable in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, the mine made a loss of N$91 million, which rose to a staggering N$385 million in 2015. “In 2016, we went through many changes, and often under less-than-favourable circumstances,” Duvenhage continued. In 2016 revenue increased by 67% compared to the previous year due to higher sales volumes. “This, together with the exchange rate that was in our favour most of the year, had a positive impact and we realized a net profit from normal operations of N$107 million,” he added.

Walvis Bay’s mayor Clr. Wilfred Immanuel urges road users to stay safe over the long weekend The Mayor of Walvis Bay Clr Wilfred Immanuel expressed his utmost concern this week with the high incidences of vehicle accidents and shack fires which continues to claim the lives, injure and leading to damage to property of Namibians. In his address during the monthly council meeting on Tuesday night Clr Immanuel urged road users to be vigilant as another long weekend is on hand. He also called for renewed actions to eradicate shacks from Namibian society, as this is not only a great risk of fire, but informal housing also negatively impacts infrastructure such as the town’s sewer system, It was not all negative. Clr Immanuel called upon Walvis Bay residents to be proud of the harbour town and for each and everyone to do their bit to keep both public and private places neat and tidy. Clr Immanuel also took the time to congratulate three Namibians who made us proud in recent days. The Mayor is quoted: “ Welcome to our Ordinary Council Meeting and thank you to Pastor Brahm Robinson of the Gereformeerde Kerk for opening our proceedings in such a dignified and glorified manner. It saddens me to reflect that during March and April road fatalities, accidental fires and possibly cases of arson, as well as various incidents of crime and violence have again made the headlines. Time and time again we raise our collective concern about the occurrences of fires taking place in some of our residential areas when shacks are often burned to the ground. We are thankful though when no lives are lost in such events, but we need to be a lot more alert in preventing fires in the first place. As far as the recent cases are concerned, I would like to thank all those who have assisted the victims, proving once again that people will open their hearts in these circumstances. I would like to single out the unwavering commitment of our Fire Brigade when dealing with fires and the people in these conditions. I must add however that not everyone is always helpful and sometimes people even display aggression towards our fire fighters. Again, to counteract such behaviour and to educate our residents around these issues, I am happy to announce that the Fire Brigade personnel will continue their awareness programmes, especially among the youth and school-going population. Backyard shacks do not only pose fire risks, but directly contribute to the high incidence of
sewerage problems we experience on a daily basis. Since some of these residents do not have access to proper sanitation facilities, they are inclined to dump whatever waste matter they can into the sewerage system. This is not an excuse though and must be prevented at all costs. The same applies to the lack of cleanliness associated with some neighbourhoods and suburbs. Although more punitive measures will have to be applied in future, we still believe that a healthy dose of pride and civic responsibility is the ultimate solution to curb littering and pollution. Fellow Councillors, Ladies and Gentlemen While some Namibians have expressed concern about the state of our economy, and especially the spill-over effects of a downgraded economy in South Africa, the outlook for us is not necessarily utter doom and gloom. Although the outlook for us is still negative, the credit ratings agency Fitch upgraded Namibia's national rating on the South African scale from AA+ to AAA last Friday. This, according to Minister Calle Schlettwein distinguished Namibia from South Africa and shields us from collateral damage as a result of the South African downgrade. Minister Schlettwein also said that “our fiscal stance and consolidation is paying off”. While we are on the subject of some optimistic news, I am even happier to share in the delight that resulted from the accomplishments of some Namibians recently. In no particular order I would like to single out the international achievements of Ebba Kalondo, our miracle doctor Helena Ndume, and boxing sensation Julius Indongo. Ms Kalondo has just been appointed as the Spokesperson for the African Union, adding to an illustrious career in journalism and communication. We are confident that she will continue to flourish in her new role too.
Monique Prince says she is not the owner of MCK Debt Collectors Monique Prins responded to a recent article in namib times where she was accused by her former employer at OSK Debt Collectors of resigning and using unethical means to open a rival debt collecting company. Prins refuted these allegations and said this week she is merely employed by this “new rival” company MCK Debt Collectors. In the response Prins states: “Clarification on an article that appeared in the namib times on 21 April 2017 entitled “Debt collector warns public about former employee stealing clients”. I am an employee of MCK Debt Collectors & Training CC, as such duly registered and I do not know of the alleged MKS referred to by Titus Kaapangelwa in his article. In the past, I was employed twice by OSK Debt Collectors CC. I resigned from their branch in Swakopmund at the end of September 2015 after various complaints were received from clients of OSK and joined a Labour Consultant firm. I was then approached again by Ottile Sindano from OSK who promised me a basic salary and commission. My reasons for leaving OSK are simply that they were disorganised and there was no proper control in the office. There were constant queries from their clients who did not receive feedback, progress reports or payouts from OSK. No proper record was kept of their clients. I did not steal clients or any files from OSK. When some clients of OSK heard that I had re-signed they requested me to take over their instructions. I have five ex OSK clients – and they are happy with my services. Titus from OSK had no clue of what was going on at the OSK branch in Swakopmund yet; he has the audacity to write the report. He is just an employee of OSK. The police investigation was poor. The police found no files of OSK and took along some scrap papers found in my residence. They even took my personal papers and I have as to date not received a proper inventory from the police of what was taken. The reason why the Prosecutor withdrew the charge against me was because of lack of proper evidence and no feedback and/or documentation from the complainant. Lastly, I refer to the SMS sent by Mr F Verno Muller as it appeared in the namib times on 25 April 2017. This person complained that he did not receive “feedback or statements from OSK but they collected money from the people that was handed over to them”. Mr Muller is known to me. I know that he signed up with OSK. There is a register book at OSK where clients are signed up. Mr. Muller informed me that he was chased away from the offices of OSK when he made queries and that he was going to consult his lawyer in this regard. There are many more clients who have the same complaint. 48 year-old lady dies in freak accident at meat market Erwin Leuschner
A 48 year-old lady was killed during a freak-accident at a wellknown meat market in Walvis Bay at about 7:00 on Wednesday morning. The lady was crushed by a boundary wall, which collapsed on top of her, while another woman was injured during the incident. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Nampol regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the incident occurred early in the morning at Charlies meat market located in 8th Street East in the Industrial Area. The boundary wall apparently collapsed after a white Scania Truck (N 5037 M) was leaving the yard after offloading meat. The driver was identified as Mr Henry J B Swart from Mariental. “It is alleged when the truck passed the gate the rear part of the trailer knocked/pulled off the gate,” Iikuyu said. This caused the entire boundary wall to collapse, falling on two women. The women were standing in a queue outside the meat market waiting for the meat market to open in order to buy meat for “Kapana”. The deceased was identified as Ndahambelela Nghipande, a 48 yearold Namibian female. She died at the scene. The second victim, Nangula Ndapewoshali Hambuda, a 39 year-old Namibian female, sustained leg injuries. The injured victim was taken to Walvis Bay State Hospital where she was admitted in a stable condition. The police is investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Olc Solar Energy Enriches Skills Press Release Estate Agents at coast Of Kraatz Marine Interns rewarded Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group subsidiary, Kraatz Marine partnered with OLC Solar Energy, a Joint Venture between O&L Energy (also a subsidiary of the O&L Group) and Cronimet Mining Power Solutions (“Cronimet”), in skills development. Five Kraatz Marine interns from the Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) have been assigned to the OLC Arandis Solar Energy project for growth and development. The five boilermaker apprentices will, according to Kraatz Human Capital Manager, Roberto January be exposed to mechanical installation of the sub-structure system and the mounting of solar panels. January: “In line with their development, this is much needed exposure towards their growth. We are happy to have been granted this opportunity as it contributes to and creates a great platform for further growth of the students which complements our commitment and dedication to skills development in Namibia.” The 3 MW Solar Power Plant at Arandis – a tender awarded to OLC Solar Energy and Women of Destiny Trust by ErongoRED, which saw its groundbreaking in November last year – is expected to be operational middle of this year. Cronimet's local subsidiary Cronimet Mining Power Solution Namibia provided EPC services on behalf of the project, which started construction in January. The turnkey EPC services have drawn heavily on local manpower and Cronimet prides itself on engaging and empowering local subcontractors in every phase of construction. Cronimet is able to support this capacity building engagement due to its direct partnership with the German Development Bank DEG and its participation in the develoPPP.de program. Together with the DEG, Cronimet focuses on the technical skill transfer, on-the-job training and vocational workshops during the construction of large scale
PV projects throughout Africa. Cronimet has engaged students from Kraatz Marine to transfer vital PV construction skills throughout a number of onsite workshops at the Arandis construction site. So far, since its establishment, the Kraatz Marine Internship Program has accommodated and enhanced the skills of at least 70 NIMT students. Students are rotated on a 3 month basis to give them the experience of both Marine and Offshore, as well as the Workshop.

Crew’s 53 hours survival ordeal as snoek vessel runs aground A crew of nine fishermen were stranded for two days on the shore close to Conception Bay, after their snoek vessel, Lucille Way, ran aground in the area at 05:15 on Tuesday [18 April 2017]. The crew spent 53 hours in adverse desert conditions with survival gear before they were found “by mere chance.” “Lucille Way” ran aground on a sandbank about 25 kilometers south of the famous “Eduard Bohlen” shipwreck. The vessel ended up on its starboard side on the beach, as strong waves pounded the vessel. The sailors were found by Mr. Armand Basson of I Dream Africa Adventure Tours. Luckily for the stranded crew I Dream Africa Adventure Tours offers tours into the far south and was travelling towards Meob Bay from Walvis Bay when Basson spotted the stranded crew. Fines of up to N$25 million await rhino and elephant poachers Tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta took the gloves off in the fight against rhinoceros- and elephant poaching. The minister recently tabled an amendment in the National Assembly of the current Nature Conservation Ordinance 4 of 1975. If becoming legislation, the fines for rhino and elephant poaching will skyrocket from a current N$200 000 to N$25 million. Recurring offenders can face a fine of up to N$50 million. The term of imprisonment will also increase from 20 years to 25 years if the bill is passed in both House of Parliament and signed into law by President Hage Geingob. Fuel prices to remain unchanged for May 2017 The Ministry of Mines and Energy announced fuel prices will remain unchanged for May 2017. The news is welcomed by Namibian consumers. After climbing steadily since March, global oil prices have stabilised around the $53-$57 range throughout April with no sign of increasing beyond that range in the immediate future. That is good news to net oil importers like Namibia because, other things remaining the same, that would mean paying less for refined petroleum products, low prices at the pumps for motorists and, ultimately, a stable transportation network in terms of cost. However, opposites are in conflict. Oil is priced in the US dollar and the exchange rate between the Namibia Dollar against the US Dollar has not been favourable to us for consumers to enjoy the full benefits of low oil prices for an extended period of time. April has witnessed massive fluctuations in the exchange rate, going as low as N$12.40 and bouncing back to a five-month high of N$13.50 within a week. These massive fluctuations were caused by events in South Africa whose currency, Rand, the Namibia Dollar is pegged to. These fluctuations made it difficult for importers, including oil companies, to maintain a balance between their budgets and the need to import products into the country, especially the ones priced in the US Dollar such as oil.
When filtered through the local market, the aforementioned conditions deprived consumers of anticipated over-recoveries that would, otherwise, trigger a decrease in the fuel pump prices. They rather stabilized the cost of bringing oil to our shores. To that end, a combination of over-recoveries and underrecoveries were recorded on controlled petroleum product, but very minimal, prompting the Ministry to, once more, keep the fuel pump prices unchanged for the month of May. The over/(under)-recoveries per product on the BFP import parity landed in Walvis Bay calculated as at 25 April 2017 are indicated below: 95 Octane Unleaded Petrol (-5.795) c/â„“ Diesel 500ppm(-0.188) c/l Diesel 50ppm - 0.990 c/â„“ Thus, the Walvis Bay pump prices will remain unchanged as follow: 95 Octane Unleaded Petrol N$ 11.00 per liter Diesel 500ppm - N$ 10.83 per liter Diesel 50ppm -N$ 10.88 per liter Petrol and diesel pump prices at various inland destinations countrywide will also remain unchanged.

From 4 May to 6 May, Harley-Davidson owners from Namibia and South Africa will get-together for the 2nd Skeleton Coast Rally in Swakopmund, hosted by the H.O.G. Namibia Chapter and sponsored by Harley-Davidson Windhoek. This event promises to be even bigger than the first rally held in May 2015 with more than 300 HarleyDavidsons expected to thunder through the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Beach Volleyball Fun Day at the Dome Beach Volleyball fun days at the Dome, Swakopmund in association with Namibian Volleyball Federation are proudly sponsored by Refuse Solutions. The Refuse Solutions Beach Volleyball Fun Days are designated to offer an opportunity for complete beginners to try out beach volleyball, in a fun and relaxed environment. The second of four Beach Volleyball Fun Days, sponsored by Refuse Solutions and hosted by Timeout Beach Volleyball Academy, took place over the weekend with 8 participants on the Youth Day on Saturday and 14 participants on the Adults Fun Day on Sunday. The days consisted of a morning session led by our team coaches, teaching the participants the basics
of beach volleyball, individual ball touches, how to play in a team and the tactical and rule differences compared to 6-a-side volleyball. In the afternoons we had fun mini tournaments to give participants a chance to put their newly found skills to the test. On Saturday the top three winners of our Youth tournament were: 1st place – Luciano Johnshon 2nd place- Daniel Van Wyk 3rd place- Rani Dausab On Sunday the top there team winners of the Adult tournament were: 1st place- Lazarus &Ronja 2nd place-Annas &Hendrik 3rd place-Mario&Brigitte The Refuse Solutions Volleyball Fun Days will return in September, but for now , The Dome will be offering regular beach volleyball training on the sand courts. Rössmund News Well we still have a bit of east wind in the air – so a little hot at times – but in general good golfing weather. Course remains in a good condition and the sandy patches caused by the maintenance team are growing through quickly. Senior Golfers take note that the “Blue Markers” for Number 8 have been moved to the forward tee box J Matchplay: There were adjustments made to the completion dates of round one due to lots of players being away for holidays. Please check with Michael or the club board – no further extensions will be given and the walkover rule will be implemented. Competitions: Destination Swakopmund and Atlantic Villas have been our major sponsors during April for which we are truly grateful – a big word of thanks to Gerhard and his team for their ongoing support of golf at Rössmund. 15 April – Easter Weekend seemed to have been a good time for golf with some excellent scores posted with 2 Clubs coming from T Saunderson and M Jacobs. – Winners: 1st: K Wentzel 42pts; 2nd: B Saunderson 41pts (c/o); C Lawrence; L Duvenhage; 5th: D Benson 40pts; 6th: M Jacobs 39pts. 22 April – saw a small field of golfers taking on the fairways with only one 2-Club from Des Benson – once again scores were close and count outs were in order. EBH Welwitschias aims for the win Sharoldine Bock
The EBH Welwitschias will take on the Windhoek High School Old Boys Cricket Club in a 50 overs Premier League final on 6 May at the Trustco United cricket field in Windhoek. The 50 overs premier league is sponsored by Three Ships Whiskey. Last year, the team managed to make it into the semi finals. This year in the finals they are determined to take the first place trophy. “With the time change we do not have a lot of time for practicing after work, but we are doing our best. One of our advantages is that some of our players are currently playing in the Senior National Team and U/19 National Team, which gave us an advantage in this premier league”, explained Colin Peake, one of the teams players. Cricket Namibia along with Welwitschia Cricket are doing all they can to support and improve cricket at the coast. Other teams which will be competing are Wanderers, United and CCD Cricket Club.

Walvis Bay Golf news We had our committee meeting in the week and herewith a few points from the meeting. · Firstly the financials are on the board for perusal, however if you would like your own copy [autographed by the chairman or not] please contact me and I will oblige. · After two month warning about a price increase we have done it, sorry guys but we really have had no choice. It was not that bad an increase, a buck or two here and there. · The Omeya trip is off. Sadly but we will reschedule for later in the year. Tsumeb is however on and the date is 27th May. The list is on the board so please guys get your team/names up. · The raffle for the Scotland trip is going according to plan and there will be all 200 tickets in the draw. The balance of unsold tickets will be in the club name and should the club win the ticket will be auctioned . Contact Wayne or Gert for a ticket before it is too late. At last count there were 155 tickets committed for sale with a few still needing to be paid. · The gala dinner tables and seats are on sale at the pro shop. At last look, there were very few tickets left so be warned if you snooze you will indeed lose. We can only have 20 tables of 10. · Gerhard will be leaving us at the end of this month and we wish him great success in his future endeavours. We also say many thanks for the time and efforts that he put into the course. We are in the process of appointing a new green keeper and more of this later. · We will be starting the upgrade of the ladies toilets/locker room soon and once this happens
the toilet in the flat will be used for the ladies. We apologise for the inconvenience but I assure you the new facilities will be worth it. You ladies deserve it J. · We are also going to start work on the cart garage door so those with carts please note that once this is done, you will be levied for part of the alteration, it is just the right thing to do for the safety of the carts. Please note that this comp is a 27 hole event with two scores to count of the first 18 holes and the 19 to 27 is a scramble drive with all three scores to count. I am not sure what is on the cards for next weekend as we had scheduled to go to Omeya. Wayne if you read this please let me know, Nardo is on duty. The first Junior Squash tournament of the year took place on Friday and Saturday with 34 entries. All matches were played at Buccaneers squash club and WASRA squash courts. Juniors came from Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay at age groups u/11, u/14, u/16 and u/19. With most of the u/11s and u/14s playing in their first ever squash tournament. This tournament were held as initially to promote and develop the Namibian Junior Squash. The plan is to hold at least 3 junior tournaments in Walvis Bay per year, one for every school trimester. The Namibian junior squash team will be heading to Bloemfontein next week on their yearly tour, to participate in the South African Country Districts Squash Festival. “We wish all the juniors participating in this tournament all the best and believe they will make Namibia proud”. In the u/11 girls Juane Brand came 1st and also got the award for being the most promising girl squash player, earning herself a brand new squash racket. In the u/11 boys Stephen Fourie came 3rd, Christo Smit 2nd and Tiaan van der Westhuizen 1st. Tiaan also got the prize of most promising boy squash player, also earning a brand new squash racket. Willem Louwrens got rewarded for his great sportsmanship and spirit in which he played the game, receiving the prize of best sportsmanship for boys. The u/14 girls also saw most of them playing in their first ever squash tournament. Ines Pao Alvo came 3rd, Malinda Bam 2nd and Justine van der Meer 1st. Malinda Bam got the prize for most improved girl squash player and Ines Pao Alvo also got rewarded for the great spirit in which she played the game, receiving the best sportsmanship for girls award. The u/16 boys was a tightly contested age-group, with some great squash being played. Johann van der Merwe walked away in 3rd place, Joshua Wood in 2nd and Ettiene Beukes 1st. Joshua Wood got rewarded for all the long hours his putting into his squash, not only did he finished 2nd, but he also got a prize for most dedicated player. Wim van der Plas who were playing in his first squash tournament and has been showing great commitment towards the game, received the most improved boy prize. The u/19 boys section came and showed us how much talent we have in current Namibian Junior squash players. There were numerous five-setters and the games were all extremely tight. In the end Cabous Oliver came 3rd, Ze-Ellias de Jongh 2nd and Brandon Grane 1st. Henko Knipe received a prize for exceptional achievement. Henko played in the u/19 section, while he is still u/16, he had narrow losses against Brandon and Ze-Ellias. The Walvis Bay archers are: Team A(total of 16 team members): F.P. Scholtz, Pieter Hough, Dominique Bekker and Llewellyn de Jager. Team B (total of 16 team members): Le Roux Everson. Apart from Walvis Bay Private High School, the rest of the team members are from Carpe Diem (4 archers); Gobabis Gymnasium (11 archers); Berg Op (3 archers), Windhoek Gymnasium (3 archers), Privaatskool Elnatan (3 archers); Community Hope School (1 archer), Danie Joubert (1 archer) and St. Paul's College (1 archer). This year's Brandberg - Uis Fly-In will be the 3rd Fly-In at the Uis Airstrip. The following has been planned so far, but there might be changes due to unforeseen circumstances. 4 May 2017 - Arrival at Uis 5 and 6 May 2017 - Competition 5 May 2017 - Braai in the Evening at Uis Airfield 6 May 2017 - Braai and Prize-Giving at Uis Airfield 7 May 2017 - Departure The participants expected are pilots from Swakopmund, Windhoek and even as far as Cape Town. At present there are 22 aircraft expected at the competition. The competition entails pilots to navigate their aircraft around a course worked out by the organizers. The pilots will then have 30 minutes to decipher the task, while working out the route and time for their specific aircraft, taking into consideration wind factors etc, to complete the task. Pilots must also do precision landings in front of the judges to obtain maximum points for this discipline. Every few centimetres out of the designated spot, counts against the pilot. Pilots need to have a very good knowledge of their
aircraft and the way it performs in different weather situations to be able to try and put them at the top of the leader board. During the prize giving, the top performer, top airmanship and best radio procedures will each receive a trophy sponsored by LISAMA. Capablanca and Rubinstein lead the way The chess leagues have begun. Record 4-times champions Capablanca Chess Club from the Premier Chess League and the rejuvenated Rubinstein Chess Academy from the First Division Chess League seem to become the leaders. Under the leadership of Thomas Ehrich, Capablanca has been the only team to date to have lifted the Premier Chess League trophy and this year, after two rounds they are proving to lift the trophy for a record 5th time in a row after demolishing Chess Masters Chess Club in the only 4-0 game of the match day. While Capablanca leads the standings, Chess Masters are already fighting relegation after 2 games as they are rooted at the bottom of the standings with no points to their name. In the game of the round, the 3D Grand Monsters Chess Club were up against Bronze medallist from 2016, Gunther Husselman Chess Club, which was vie-wed as the battle of “second place”, and the Monsters who have acquired the services of
International Master Robert Gwaze, made no mistake as victory took them to second place, while Gunther could just settle for fourth place. Meanwhile, in the first division, only game points separate the top 5 teams with Rubinstein Chess Academy leading the pack on the Sonneborn-Berger tie break. All the teams in the top 5 dismantled their opposition with convincing victories and it promises to be an interesting Round 3 ahead, with the game of the round tipped to be between Rubinstein Chess Academy and IUM chess club at the only top of the table clash. At the bottom of the log, Nampower and Incredible Knights will square off in the race to avoid being rooted at the bottom.
