Hundreds of vehicles filled up the mall’s more than 800 parking bays in a matter of less than an hour. It resulted in a traffic congestion never experienced in Walvis Bay around the Diaz traffic circle, the B2 coastal road and the airport road. “This is Walvis Bay’s biggest traffic jam in history”, remarked a motorist who spent more than an hour in a virtually gridlock position in his vehicle. He described it as “the mother of all traffic jams in Walvis Bay”.

According to Schlusche, investigations by various authorities, including an independent assessor, concluded. This paved the way for the clean-up to begin. The rebuilding process will also commence soon. According to Schlusche, the new building will not be much different from the former. The façade of the old pharmacy with its big windows will remain. Schlusche aims to reopen the building by mid-2018. In the meantime, Leonie Swanepoel reopened a temporary dispensary at the Altes Amptsgericht building located opposite the central police station. The raging inferno destroyed the building on 22 August. The fire started in Dr Moisel's practice and quickly spread over to the pharmacy. By the time the fire was under control, both the pharmacy and doctor's consulting rooms were destroyed. Fortunately, firewalls between the buildings prevented the fire spreading. Renovations to the Dolphin Pharmacy were almost completed when the fire came on 22 August. Only finishing touches were still missing. Dr Moisel in the meantime is available at the consulting room of Dr Rudi van Wyk and Dr Maja Brand, located next to the Post Office in Swakopmund.

It seems the rumor about the closure is based on reports from 2015 which recirculated recently and that caused the confusion. “We as the Windpomp14 team would just like to ensure our customers that the article in a newspaper regarding all of the establishments along the coast being closed, does not include Windpomp14. It is business as usual and as always”, read a statement by Sun Karros, managing the establishment. According to NWR the newly renovated campsites Jakkalsputz, Mile 72 and Mile 108 will still be affordable. “Visitors can expect to pay N$50 per person and N$120 per campsite. The chalets at the Miles will cost N$500 per unit and will accommodate a maximum of two people”, the statement reads. “I am quite delighted that the Miles and Jakkalsputz have returned and will now be managed by NWR”, says Zelna Hengari, NWR's Managing Director. Adding: “at the same time, it's pleasing to note that the additional accommodation will complement our coastal offering provided by Terrace Bay and Torra Bay. Terrace Bay is open throughout the year and Torra Bay opens from the beginning of December up until the end of January.” “I must also mention that Jakkalsputz will remain open throughout the year while the Miles will open during our major holidays”, Hengari concluded.
“When the first leopard jumped at me I could fight it off. However, then the second leopard attacked me. It was then that I realised I was in deep trouble. My survival instincts kicked in”, explained David Dantatzao in an interview with namib times this week. The sheep herder Dantatzao made headlines after he was attacked by two leopards on Monday morning on a farm in the Karibib district. He survived, and managed to kill one of the big cats with his pocket knife and a panga. According to Dantatzao he took the herd of sheep out of the kraal for grazing as usual on Monday morning at around 08:30. He is a sheep herder on the farm Domeb in the Karibib district. “I walked behind the sheep as we approached a river bed. “I noticed marks on the ground of what seemed to be something that was pulled through the river and I thought it was maybe a jackal pulling an animal hide”, he explained. He did not think much of it and returned to his sheep when he suddenly heard the dogs barking. “I was curious and went to look. When I walked around a tree my eyes met the two leopards”, he said. Dantatzao realised he was now eye to eye with a big male leopard and a slightly smaller female. “They were about two or three feet away from me when I saw them the first time. The male stormed. It happened so fast. Luckily, I had a panga with me and I hit it on the mouth and it turned and ran away”, Dantatzao continued. But it wasn't over yet. The female leopard “seemed very angry” and ran towards the 59-year-old. “The panga fell out of my hand and the leopard jumped at me, scratching my face, arms and hands. I only thought of surviving”, he said. Dantatzao remembers intense pain as the leopard's nails cut deep into his flesh. “In the heat of the fight I remembered I had a pocket knife and I pulled it out”, Dantatzao said. He stabbed the leopard in the ribs and cut its throat. The animal collapsed and lay motionless. The sheep herder immediately ran home to inform his family and friends of what happened. He told his son to go fetch the dead leopard so he had evidence of what happened. Dantatzao was rushed to the clinic at Karibib and immediately transferred to the Usakos State Hospital. He sustained severe lacerations on various parts of his body. “I am glad my survival instincts saved me”, Dantatzao concluded. Dantatzao is still recovering in hospital. Detective Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, Nampol regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, confirmed the incident.

Lions donate gardening tools to Westside High School Sharlien Tjambari
The West Side High School is one of a few schools in Swakopmund practicing urban gardening for close to three years now - and their gardening is very successful. On Monday, the school received gardening equipment from the Swakopmund Lions Club. Martha Kamati, a Life Science teacher at the school, is fortunate to have a dedicated group of learners helping her out in this garden. Kamati says she started the garden three years ago and the first crop harvested was spinach. “When I started this garden, we had a sleep-over at the school. This was to
raise funds for fertilisers. Fertilisers can be very expensive. From the money we raised through the sleep-over I bought fertilisers and with the help of some learners, we planted the first seeds”, Kamati explained. Mrs Renate Witt, the coordinator of the Lions Club Swakopmund, explained the Club decided to help the school with the
garden after they read media reports about it. “After reading in the media reports about the garden at Westside High, we realised that they needed help. We decided to support them with gardening equipment such as a hosepipe, spades, shovels, rakes and many more to make work easier for them”, she said. The Principal of West-

Namibian ports must “size up” for mega container ships For Namport it is no longer business as usual, says the port authority's Chief Executive Officer Bisey Uirab. Ports in other Southern African countries are progressing in, or are planning, major infrastructure developments and linking it up by rail and road to Trans-African corridors. For Namibia's ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz to stay competitive against these ports, it is important to look at accommodating larger container vessels. Uirab made these remarks recently at the annual Port Users Luncheon at Walvis Bay. “We have seen the shipping lines' order book for mega vessels”, explained Uirab. Adding Namibian ports can become irrelevant if the moment is not seized to “size up”. Infrastructure and technology to accommodate larger ships is part of Namport's future strategy, Uirab assured. “At Namport we are taking this seriously. Infrastructural and technical changes to accommodate larger container vessels at the port of Walvis Bay are under consideration as is extending the main quay at our Port of Lüderitz to accommodate two container vessels at the same time”. Mr Uirab said Namport also looks at various models to finance these upgrades and advancements. Smart partnership with the private sector was mentioned as one of those options.

Ndume Square opens in Kuisebmond
First blacktop surface for Swakopmund-Henties Bay road The road between Henties Bay and Swakopmund received its first stretch of blacktop (bitumen) at the end of September. The upgrade of the stretch of road between Swakopmund and Henties Bay seems to be behind schedule though, as the initial completion date was set to March 2018. Currently earth-works for the road construction are carried out in the vicinity of Areva's Erongo desalination plant. To the southern side of the desalination plant no progress has been made to date. An enquiry was sent to the Roads Authority regarding the progress of the road project, but no answer was received yet. Several members of the public called the newspaper in recent weeks and reported roadworks came to a total stansdtill. Johny Smith to head TransNamib The Chief Executive Officer of Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Mr Johny Smith, has been appointment as the Chief Executive Officer of the Namibia's national rail carrier TransNamib. Smith confirmed his appointment yesterday. The position of CEO at TransNamib is vacant since the suspensions and subsequent dismissal of Saara Naanda-Katiti in 2016. Smith's appointment was approved at a Cabinet meeting last Tuesday. The Ministry of Works and Transport received recommendations for three candidates from the TransNamib Board of Directors. The candidates that were nominated for the position were Johny Smith, Dede Bukasa (South African-based engineer) and Jaco Kruger (Namibian businessman). TransNamib's Board recommended Dede Bukasa to be the new boss at TransNamib. The Ministry rejected this recommendation and preferred the appointment of Mr Johny Smith. This translates to N$6 264 per m². The second house design measures 40m², at a construction cost of N$217 450. The construction cost is slightly less at N$5 436 per m². The above-mentioned prices would still make these houses virtually unaffordable to hardworking people earning a minimum wage. Is it realistic? An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste 50. Matrikjubiläum der Class ‘67 des Holy Cross Convent Swakopmund Zwei Jahre lang hatte die in Swakopmund ansässige Regina Adrian (geb. Rudolph) nach ihren alten Schulkameradinnen aus dem Holy Cross Convent in Windhoek geforscht, weil sie ein Klassentreffen der Matrikulantinnen aus dem Jahre 1967 an der Küste veranstalten wollte. Gemeinsam mit ihren Ex-Klassenmaats Kathy Campbell (verh. Buitendacht), Ingrid Koch (verh. Heimstedt) Ardeen Bandjes (verh. Meintjes) und ihrem Mann Peter machte sie schließlich via Facebook und Google, per Telefon und Mail sämtliche 21 Schulabschlussgängerinnen vor 50 Jahren ausfindig die letzte Kameradin, Maria Hibl, wurde erst vor zwei Monaten in Kroatien aufgespürt. Die Begeisterung, diejenigen wiederzusehen, mit denen damals die katholisch durchtränkte Schulbank gedrückt wurde, übertrug sich auf Windesflügeln
von einem ConventMädel auf das andere und endete in einer fieberhaften Suche nach den Maats, die inzwischen in Johannesburg, Kapstadt, Wellington im Westkap, Somerset West, Plettenberg Bay, Pretoria, Windhoek, Swakopmund, Henties Bay, Deutschland und Kroatien verstreut leben. Staubige Notizbüchlein und vergilbte Fotografien wurden hevorgekramt. Der Computer sowie die Telefonschnur liefen sich heiß, und man fand alle wohlauf. Immerhin hatten es 11 von den 21 geschafft, zu dem 50. Klassenjubiläum in Swakopmund einzutreffen selbst Maria Hibl aus Kroatien hatte den weiten Weg nicht gescheut. Die Wiedersehensfreude beim Willkommensdinner am Freitag, den 20. Oktober im Secret Garden Guest House & Pizzeria war groß. einig, dass Betreiberin Anita Hennies - ein Südwester Kind, das sich in München zur Restaurantmanagerin und Köchin ausbilden liess - ein vorzügliches Mahl hervorgezaubert hatte. Besonders Regina Adrian war hin und weg: ,,Ich kann dieses Plätzchen nur jedem empfehlen, der mit einer kleineren Gruppe von 10 oder mehr stilvoll und gemütlich feiern möchte.” Eine niedliche Anekdote sei hier noch hinzuzufügen. Christa Schamberger-Young hatte von ihrer Klassenkameradin Ardeen Bantjes damals ein Sammelalbum mit Bildern der Schauspielerin Julie Andrews erhalten. Nach 50 Jahren hatte Christa dieses Einklebebuch mit im Gepäck und erstattete es an Ardeen zurück. Wenn das nicht das Zeichen eines innigen Klassengeistes ist! Den Besuchern, die die namibische Küste lang nicht gesehen hatten, fielen fast die Augen aus dem Kopf bei dem Anblick der vielen Entwicklungen zwischen dem Touristenmekka Swakopmund und der Hafenstadt. Fasziniert waren die ehemaligen ConventSchüler auch von den Pelikanen, Delfinen und Robben. Letztere, der Meinung war zumindest Ursula Brown (geb. Motz), übertreffen bestimmt die Bevölkerung Namibias. Nachdem Namibias ausgedehnte Natur gebührend bewundert wurde, plauderte man bei Kaffee/Tee und Kuchen ausgiebigst im Strandhotel. Abends durften die Ladies im Wild Rocket Café ein exzellentes Dreigängemenü genießen. Man war sich

Liebe Küstenleser! Am 31. Oktober findet in Keetmanshoop, im Herzen des namibischen KarakulzuchtAreals die 110. Jubiläumsfeier von SWAKARA (Süd-West-Afrika-Karakul) statt. An dem Dienstag führen 12 namibische Modelle Pelzhändlern aus aller Welt die schönste Bekleidung aus Karakulfell vor, von einer klassisch-eleganten Serie über eine erotisch-anziehende bis hin zu einer bunt-gewagten Palette von Pelzen, alle Möglichkeiten. Unser Trio Feminale mit Gastmusiker Ferdinand Hengombe an der Djembetrommel haben die Ehre, die Modelle und das Dinner musikalisch zu begleiten. Karakulschafe - der offizielle Name hierzulande lautet inzwischen Swakara-Schafe - sind seit 1907 in Namibia gezüchtet worden. Eigentlich begann alles bereits 1612, als der aus Görlitz stammende Paul Thorer, dritter Sohn des Theodor Thorer, der eines der führenden Unternehmen der europäischen Pelzbranche in Leipzig gegründet hatte, die Deutsche Kolonialregierung dazu anregte, Karakulschafe in Deutsch-Südwestafrika einzuführen. Paul Thorer war der Meinung, dass die ariden Wüstenbedingungen
des südwestlich gelegenenen Afrikastaates denen der zentralasiatischen Steppe sehr ähnlich und daher ideal für die Karakulzucht seien. Auf Bitten des damaligen deutschen Gouverneurs von SüdwestAfrika, Friedrich von Lindequist, kaufte Paul Thorer aus einem für Österreich bestimmten Transport von Karakulschafen zehn Mutterschafe sowie zwei bereits in Groß-Enzersdorf gezüchtete Karakulböcke. Er veranlasste 1907 den ersten Transport reinrassiger Tiere, aus der sich die bedeutende Karakulzucht in Namibia, Swakara, entwickelte. Der erste Karakulzüchter war Albert Voigts von Voigtsgrund. Er erhielt von dem damaligen Gouverneur acht Reinblutmütter und einen Reinblutbock aus der von Theodor Thorer der Regierung vermittelten Versuchsherde von zwölf Karakulschafen. Die restlichen, nach dem Norden trasportierten Tiere gediehen wegen des dort feuchten Klimas nicht. Dank der guten Beziehungen des deutschen Kaisers zum russischen Zaren wurden nach und nach 820 Karakulschafe aus Usbekistan nach DeutschSüdwestafrika nachgeliefert. Sie bildeten den Grundstock der südwestafrikanischen Ka-
rakulzucht, obwohl es noch 25 Jahre dauern sollte, bis sich die mit Einkreuzung einheimischer Rassen gezüchtete Schafrasse Swakara (= Südwestafrikanisches Karakul) durchsetzte und - noch wichtiger - sich die

Black Bass Anglers World Championships
Namibia competed for the first time at such a immense event. The Namibians gave a fine performance at the world's biggest team bass angling tournament hosted by South Africa on the Vaal River from 2 to 8 October. A total of 13 countries participated at the 13th Black Bass World Championships. All the countries that participated in the tournament had three boats with two anglers each, on a 52km stretch of water on the river. The tournament was held over a period of five days of angling of which two days were for practise and three days of competition. On the first day of the competition it was very cold and it rained non-stop from 06h00 to 10h00. In the depressed conditions the Namibian team was cold and wet, but managed to catch their limit for the day. The Namibians ended fifth overall, ahead of the United States. On the second day disaster struck the Namibian team as the barometer changed and due to boat pressure and to make matters worse their biggest fish died a few minutes before the weigh in with the result the Namibia team moved from fifth place down to eighth place overall. The final day saw the Namibian team managed to catch their limit for the day and ended fifth on the day and seventh overall. Namibians and Ricardo Abrantes ended fourth overall in the individual standings. Max Pieper caught a 2,26kg fish that was the fourth biggest fish of the tournament. According to Andrew Hall, the PRO of the Namibia Bass Angling Association, the organisation of the tournament was impeccable. “The media coverage was phenomenal with live updates being broadcast all over the world, including on the famous FLW YouTube channel. Each day's full weigh in was broadcast live on the web and fans tuned in from all corners of the globe,” he said. The final standing of the 13th Black Bass World Championships were; 1. Annual Corporate Sports Tournament
Junior Coastal Cricket Academy ends on top
The Annual Corporate Sports Tournament (formerly the Inter-mines Tournament) is set for tomorrow and Sunday (28th – 29th October 2017) at the Vinita Central Sports Field in Swakopmund. The main purpose of the event is to foster corporate camaraderie and to encourage mutual trust and friendship amongst the various corporate houses. The 2017 Annual Corporate Sports Tournament is being held under the auspices of Swakop Uranium. The mining companies that will participate are Swakop Uranium, Rössing Uranium, B2Gold, Basil Read Tsumeb, Ohorongo Cement, Dundee, Beifang and
Weatherly Tschudi Mine. The sport codes that these companies will compete in are Soccer, Netball, Volleyball, Basket Ball, Old Crocks Soccer, Pool, etc. The event is open to the general public at no cost. There will be food and non-alcoholic drinks on sale at the event by various local businesses which reaffirms the commitment of Swakop Uranium to the National Agenda, in particular SME Development.

JCCA ended on top of the Coastal T20 Cricket League that ended last weekend with Blue Waters 1 ending in second place, Sparta 2 in third and Sparta 1 in the fourth place. The rest of the log standing is Swakopmund 1 fifth, Blue Waters 2 sixth and Swakopmund 2 in the seventh position. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow as JCCA vs Sparta 1 at the Sparta field and Blue Waters 1 vs Sparta 2 at the Oval. Both games will start at 14:00. The final will be played on Sunday at the Sparta field at 11:00.

The two kickboxers are Lesley !Hoaeb who is nominated for Sportsman of the year and Delano Müller for Junior Sports Man of the year. All this will be at the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) sports awards tonight at the Windhoek Country Club and Resorts.

Both these athletes are kickboxing champions from the Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay. They became world champions in June this year at the Battle of Atlanta World Championships in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Their achievements are as follows: On the 16 & 17 June 2017 Lesley !Hoaeb defeated the German Taekwondo champion, Johannes Gottwald at the Battle of Atlanta World Championships to be the World Champion. On 4 March 2017 he got 3x 1st Places at the Jungle War in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also recently became the Sub-Saharan champion in his age group. Delano Müller achieved 4th grade white belt - Graded by Master Sylvio Behring President of Brazilian Confederation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (highest junior belt in Namibia) Junior Sportsman of the year 2016. Top 3 nominees at RASA, Johannesburg, South Africa Highest rank in Kickboxing (Junior Black Belt) in Namibia. Legacy Boxing Title, 1st Place 4 March 2017 Johannesburg, South Africa, Jungle War, 2 x 1st Places and 16 & 17 June 2017. In Atlanta, Georgia USA he become a World Champion at the Battle of Atlanta World Championships. He also recently became the Sub-Saharan champion in his age group.
