2018 Toy Run The first two vehicles were fully assembled at the Walvis Bay auto assembly plant (pictured) in recent days. The two vehicles are part of more than 5 000 vehicles of the Opel and Peugeot fabricates that will be assembled here towards the close of 2020. The vehicle assembly plant belongs to French car maker Groupe PSI. An official opening event is planned for early December, Peugeot South Africa confirmed yesterday.
Angry mob wants arsonist hand to them Floris Steenkamp More than hundred people convened at the Kuisebmond police station at Walvis Bay yesterday, demanding a suspected arsonist be handed over to them. The arsonist, a male Namibian, allegedly set a number of shacks alight in Kuisebmond on Sunday, leading to his arrest. An estimated five shacks burnt down. “This is really chaos and scary. China takes majority control of Rössing Sharlien Tjambari China is set to become the single biggest owner of Namibia's uranium resources. This follows an announcement by Rio Tinto yesterday that it sells 68,62 % of Rössing Uranium Limited (RUL) to China National Uranium Corporation (CNUC). The sale is worth N$1,5 billion. Rio Tinto owns 69 % of Rössing Uranium Limited which in turns owns Namibia's Rössing Mine, some 75km east of Swakopmund near the mining town of Arandis. China is an already established stakeholder in Namibia's uranium sector, through Taurus Minerals which owns 90 % of Swakop Uranium and its Husab Mine. Taurus in turn is a subsidiary of China General Nuclear Power Company (CGNPC). In a statement yesterday Rio Tinto stated: “Rio Tinto has entered into a binding agreement with China National Uranium Corporation Limited ("CNUC") for the sale of its entire 68.62 per cent stake in Rössing Uranium Limited ("Rössing"), owners of the Rössing mine in Namibia, for up to $106.5 million. The total consideration comprises an initial cash payment of $6.5 million, payable at completion,
and a contingent payment of up to $100 million following completion. The contingent payment is linked to uranium spot prices and Rössing's net income during the next seven calendar years. In addition, Rio Tinto will receive a cash payment if CNUC sells the Zelda 20 Mineral Deposit during a restricted period following completion. The total consideration is subject to a maximum cap of $106.5 million. The transaction represents the culmination of an extensive assessment of strategic options considered by Rio Tinto in relation to Rössing. Rio Tinto chief executive J-S Jacques said the sale of our interest in Rössing once again demonstrates our commitment to strengthening our portfolio and focussing on our core assets, which deliver sector leading returns in the short, medium and long term.

XCCS hosts fire drill
Extreme Customs Clearing Services (XCCS) held their annual emergency simulation drill next to the B2 coastal road recently. The drill was conducted to test the readiness of all relevant emergency services of Walvis Bay. The drill was in the form of a mock-up road accident in which a light vehicle collided with an XCCS fuel tanker truck. Emergency services took under 10 minutes to reach the accident from the moment they were notified of the “accident”. The operations manager at XCCS, Mr Raymond Hummel, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the drill. “The initial call to report the incident was clear and straightforward. The
response time of all emergency services was satisfactory and so also the coordination between the different stakeholders”. Hummel explained the importance for XCCS to be accountable to all road users. The response to and handling of road accidents involving the company's fleet of fuel tanker trucks are one aspect of such accountability. Hummel made use of the opportunity to announce XCCS will start next year with a free defensive driving clinics, for drivers with a valid driving licence.

We need to forgive them as God's plans is not ours. Sometimes it feels like we have failed our loved ones that are addicted but we just need to believe that he or she will turn to get help, as for God nothing shall be impossible” Ferreira concluded.

Cellular App to save lives Fast access to medical assistance in the event of a medical emergency comes in a new form to Namibia. That is thanks to a mobile app launched by EMed Rescue 24 recently. With the press of a button on your cell phone the app puts you in contact with EMed's emergency centre, even if your cell phone signal strength is at its weakest. EMed Rescue 24 issued the following statement yesterday of the launch of the app which took place Thursday, on 22 November: “On 22 November EMed Rescue24 launched the new EMed Rescue 24 Mobile Application thereby providing the public with fast access to medical assistance in the event of a medical emergency. In his address, CEO of the Prosperity Group Bertus Struwig said that the App had been in the making for more than two years and after a lot of research and testing was now ready for the Namibian market. “We are extremely
proud of this great innovation and are happy to share it with all Namibians. Even if you only have a one-bar connectivity, our Call Centre will get your panic and assist you with the services you require, be it for a road accident, heart attack or a stroke.” Bertus encouraged more private companies to find way and means for PPP's, in order to work together with the Government of the Republic of Namibia in a variety of areas for the benefit of the country as a whole. “We hope that this App will be extended even further to include, for example, the Police service and our important tourism sector in the future.” Eddie Bezuidenhout,
Managing Director of EMed Rescue24 advised that in the event of a medical emergency, fast and professional medical services were often the determining factor in saving lives and the App made quick and easy response possible. Regarding EMed Rescue 24, Eddie shared some highlights of the past 15 years: “We started off with a general 24hour Call Centre, one road Ambulance and one air Ambulance in Windhoek. Over the years we have developed and upgraded the Call Centre Systems to identify members quicker; included a Medical Trauma Surgeon to the team for emergency guidance and assistance; positioned road Ambu-
lances across Namibia at the most strategic and high-risk places for quicker response times; started Fist Aid training to enable people to help one another whiles we are on the way to their rescue and introduced the EMed Medical Bracelet which can identify you and talk for you. And today we have come a long way to introduce you to the Mobile Emergency app which can identify you, your next of kin as well as your position of emergency by pressing the panic button on your phone.”
More about the EMed emergency app The Emed Rescue 24 call centre, based in Windhoek, operates 24 hours a day seven days a week, and is staffed by multi lingual Medical Life Support clinicians. The app will be in a form of a panic button on your phone and the app contains the following features: The App is available to all smart phone users. The App can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store. The App is used when someone needs emergency medical assistance. The App pre-registration process enables the emergency call centre to have access to all your key information and access to your location, which means the medical personnel will be able to reach you faster. The App talks for you when you can't, by just pressing the panic button. Accessibility is in all major towns. 2018 Live To Ride Toy Run
The organisers of the 2018 Live To Ride Toy Run expressed gratitude yesterday for the large number of bikers, from various biker’s clubs, who turned out on Sunday to support this annual event. The Toy Run every year serves as an opportunity for the biker’s community to donate toys to the Lions Club of Walvis Bay for their Christmas Project for less fortunate children. Thanks to the Toy Run it is possible every year to lighten up a child’s heart with a toy as a Christmas gift.

85 000 tons of salt to be exported A total of 85 000 tons of bulk salt will be loaded at Walvis Bay between Wednesday of this week up to 9 December. The bulk carrier Christos is expected alongside this week to load 43 000 tons of salt, followed Bold Voyager which will load 40 000 tons between 3 and 7 December. The consignments of salt are destined for the United States. On 9 December the bulk carrier Greta will take on 2000 metric tons of salt. The export destination is not known for this consignment of 2 000 tons.

A taste of Christmas for the elderly
Back in all his glory Walvis Bay Town Councillor Samson Nghilumbwa (pictured below), who faces possible criminal prosecution for the abuse of his municipal credit card to the tune of N$83 000, is back in his seat. His 30 days of suspension by the Walvis Bay Town Council lapsed yesterday. According to the Councillor's Code of Conduct, the Local Authority Council of Walvis Bay cannot suspend any Councillor for a period of more than 30 days. Only the Minister of Urban and Rural Development has the authority to suspend any local authority Councillor for a period of more than thirty days. However, by yesterday no action in this regard was taken by the Urban and Rural Development Minister Peya Mushelenga. With his 30 days lapsed, Clr Nghilumbwa is back in his seat as local authority Councillor as of today. In the meantime, no progress has been reported by the Anti-Corruption Commission of Namibia on the investigation into Nghilumbwa's alleged credit card abuse. Little is also known whether more currently serving local authority Councillors and even their predecessors are under investigation also for the same abuse of their municipal credit cards. On Saturday, the Desert Mustang Motorcycle Club hosted a Christmas lunch at the Altstadt Restaurant for 48 members of the Welwitschia Old age home as part of their contribution to various charities and communities. The senior citizens were collected at their homes and transported to Altstadt Restaurant, where a tasty lunch and refreshments were served to the guests. With the support from Club Members, Altstadt Restaurant, Mega Save Swakopmund, Tracks & Trails, Welwitschia Shuttle, Sinclair Services, Spar Windhoek, Design Worx and Chantel Burger, donations from various companies and private persons, enabled the club to also present the guests with a parcel with a few items to help alleviate some of the daily burdens. The beautiful garden setting, excellent service and good food, ensured that it was an enjoyable day for the senior citizens. The Desert Mustangs would like to thank all that made it possible to give the Welwitschia Old Age Home (Phase 2) a small taste of Christmas.

The factory of NovaNam & Lalandii, in Walvis Bay recently hosted its annual fun day event which catered for its employees and children. The memorable event which was held at dune 7, is one which takes place annually and creates a platform where the company's management team and all employees, together with their children, all come together to engage and have a relaxed and enjoyable time as an organizational family. The main goal of the event is to make sure that employees and management and their families come together and spend quality time together as one Company and one family. The children come to the event to have fun with their parents and the employees can see that their children build good relationships with other children. The day was filled with various sport activities such as volley ball, soccer and netball in which the employees together with some of the management staff took part in. The children were dazzled by the various fun games and activities included jumping castles, dune races as well as face painting. Traditional performances in diversity were also done by the employees from the various cultural groups. The event instilled a sense of oneness among the employees and activated a family sense of belonging to the employees across the Company's hierarchy.

Buccaneers 2018 Club Champs Club Champs was Buccaneers Squash Club's final event of the year. This event took place on 10 & 11 November. The draw wasn't too large, but it was still thoroughly enjoyed by the players that participated. The play was fierce and competitive with the top slots of the club up for grabs. In the main event, the Men's Cup, Trevor Grane shone and finally proved what talent and great potential he has. In the Semifinal he beat last year's winner Angelo Titus 3-1 and in the final beat his brother Brandon Grane by the same margin to lift the Cup and become the Club's champion for 2018. Coastal Open Squash Championship The SFC Squash Club will host the prestigious annual WB Hardware Coastal Open Squash Championship on 14-16 December 2018 at the SFC Sport Club in Swakopmund. The Chairman, Rudi Koekemoer, confirmed that WB Hardware & Building Supplies is the premium sponsor for this event. He emphasised that it is indeed an incredible privilege during the current economic recession to secure a reputable sponsor of this magnitude. The total prize money for the various divisions shall total N$20 000 with various lucky draws and other prizes to be won too. A special word of thanks is extended to Danie Jansen for his continued support and commitment towards the squash sport code in Namibia which is continuing to grow from strength to strength. The Coastal Open takes place during the festive season in Swakopmund when people from all walk of life decent on the beautiful coastal town to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean's cool breeze and to participate in a hive of activities on offer. Families celebrate another year that has passed into history and look forward to a new exciting 2019. This relaxed atmosphere brings a special festive culture to the Coastal Open where new friendships are forged and where old friend meet up again to battle it out on court to secure bragging rights for the next twelve months. Entries have been received from all corners of Namibia with more expected from within SADC to challenge the defending champions, Danie Greeff (Men's Champions 2017) and Chantel De Gouveia (Ladies Champion 2017). The defending champions are indeed worthy of their titles and it is going to require a special effort to challenge them. However, some quality entries have already been received and more are likely to enter. Squash players are encouraged to enter for this tournament before the closing date of 7
December by either downloading Team App www.teamapp.com/app (search for SFC Squash Club) or by sending an email to events@sfcsquash.com Entry fee is N$200 per player. The tournament will accommodate 36 men's and 16 ladies players. Please enter as soon as possible to secure a place in the draw. This is going to be a memorable tournament and therefore we would like to encourage squash players to stay in shape this festive season by entering and enjoying festive squash at its best.
Wanderers Squash Club hosted its final major event of the year this past weekend, and it turned out to be the biggest event with regards to entries in recent memory. For the past 5 years, there has not been a tournament with more entries, but on this occasion there were 96 players that took part, once again showing how the sport has grown over the past couple of years. Wi t h 2 6 l a d i e s having entered, 12 juniors (under 12 years old) and 36 Masters (over 40), the tournament was a true testament as to the sport being for people from all walks of life. “With Sponsors like Visions Consulting, Pionierspark Pharmacy and 3@1 this tournament was really one for the books. To have this many players take part, with nearly 600 matches being played, it truly was a successful weekend, with top level squash played throughout. This weekend really excited us about the level of squash that we can expect in 2019, as the sport continues to grow in leaps in bounds.” There were some exciting things that came out of this weekend, with the emergence of former South African Number 1 under 11 girls, Dene v Zyl winning the C Division Final, after beating the experienced Jessica Moore.
There were also great results for youngsters like Fran-co Lambert, who won the plate of the B Division, as well as the young Hein Bam who was the runner-up in the B Division. The young Arno rd Diekmann came 3 in the A Division, and another surprise package in the Masters division came through a very tough draw after beating the much more fancied Archie Botha, and then the defending champion, Gerdus Louwrens before pushing Michau Basson right down to the wire in the final before succumbing 31. In the A Division Final, spectators were treated to a great running final between Sven Gruttemeyer and the tournament favourite Kyle Kriel. Kriel was the eventual winner after winning the final 3-0. Wanderers Squash Club now heads in to the last weekend on its calendar, where the winner of the Visions Open Division will take on the winner of the Masters Division in an Exhibition match on Saturday (1 December) at 12:00, in a fund raiser, where Wanderers Squash Club will be raising funds in a Christmas Drive in order to donate clothes, bedding, stationary etc
towards an Orphanage of the clubs choice. NALASRA REPORT Basketball Old School

Walvis Bay Whales Basketball Old school reunion in conjunction with Erongo Basketball Association hosted the first ever annual Old School Basketball on Saturday 24th November 2018 in Swakopmund at the Vineta sports grounds. Back row form left to right Corry Tjivahe, John Naoadoeb, Anna-Liisa Korea-Jermia, Piet Adreki and Theopholine Mack Namibian Local Authorities Sports and Recreation Association (NALASRA) was launched in May in Okahandja. This was a result of local authorities realising the need and importance of creating a platform to network and develop friendships, goodwill, and cooperation amongst one another. NALASRA was thus established to fulfil that need and promote such an atmosphere through local authority sport and recreation. NALASRA aims to make sport and recreation accessible to both political and administrative personnel. The first national games was hosted in Otjiwarongo during April 2009 and the 10th anniversary celebrations of the games was hosted by Otjiwarongo Municipality in May 2018. The Municipality of Walvis Bay will host the 11th edition of NALASRA Games from the 05 – 11 May 2019.Hosting the games will attract about 3 000 participants and spectators throughout Namibia to the town, thus contributing vastly to an economic boom of the town and marketing of Walvis Bay. Accommodation facilities in the town (including the Municipal Bungalows) will benefit significantly during the period, as well as all the local businesses, including the SMEs. The event is the biggest Inter-Municipal sports event in Namibia and it is important that the Municipality is well prepared to host the NALASRA Games in terms of infrastructure (sports and recreation facilities), accommodation, security, health and emergency services. The General Assembly was hosted by the Municipality of Walvis Bay on 20 November 2018 and new leadership was elected with Daniel Mouton from Walvis Bay Municipality elected as President with Penda Kashihakumwa from Ongwendiwa as the Deputy President. The Secretary General and his deputy are Gert van Wyk from the City of Windhoek and John Hinda from Otjiwarongo respectively. With Heinrich Mukume from Nkurenkuru as the treasurer and Loide Elaja from Omuthiya as his deputy. The additional members are Corry Tjivahe from Otjiwaringo, John Naoadoeb from Gobabis, Anna-Liisa Korea-Jermia from Oshakati, Piet Adreki from Omuthiya and Theopholine Mack from Keetmanshoop.
The tournament was open to players aged 35 and over saw 10 teams from all over the country participated in the Round Robbin event. The final game played with between Swakopmund Hornets and The Choppers from Windhoek saw the later take the gold trophy home. The event was well-attended with many old players present to support the tournament. The organisers look forward to a bigger and better event next year. expressed his excitement at an opportunity to compete again. “This is really exciting for us. We have not played in a long time. We love the game and would like to see more happen here in Swakopmund. Some of the players lamented the state of the basketball courts in the region citing the disadvantages these run-down courts have on the game of Basketball.
Coastal fighters won at Ramatex Coastal fighters won at Ramatex Harry Simon, Harry Simon Jr and Albino 'Dannyboy' Felesianu were on the winning side at the Boxing Bonanza in Windhoek over the past weekend. Harry Simon beat Kaminja Ramadhani Shabani of Tanzania and his son, Harry Simon Jr, defeated veteran Zimbabwean boxer Meshack Kondwani and super lightweight boxer Albino 'Dannyboy' Felesianu beat Limbani Chipaka of Malawi on points after six rounds of boxing .
