Municipal traffic declares war on number plates Medals

The Walvis Bay municipal traffic department confirmed this week that a campaign has started to bring to the book those who own and operate vehicles without number plates. Walvis Bay has seen an increase in the number of vehicles with either one or both number plates missing. Not only does that warrant the vehicle unroadworthy, but it also poses a problem to law enforcement agencies as crimes can be committed with unmarked vehicles. “Please ensure your vehicle has both number plates. Number plates must be visible and should not be obscured by for instance a spare wheel”, municipal traffic chief Eben Platt said yesterday.

The launch of the curry sauce flavour and maasbanker minced meat in tomato sauce are as a result of market research and gaining an understanding of what the market wants. Since Etosha Fishing’s establishment in Walvis Bay in the 1940’s, the company has been around the block quite a few times when it comes to staying afloat in different economic circumstances and to overcome challenges. When Government called for value adding in the fishing industry to create jobs and expand manufacturing capacity, Etosha Fishing Ltd. took an innovative lead to can horse mackerel. It led to the successful Efuta Maasbanker product range. When Namibia’s pilchard biomass started to dwindle and annual total allowable catches shrunk to zero, again Etosha Fishing rose to the challenge. Despite extremely small annual pilchard quotas and a total moratorium on pilchard catches in force right now, the company still managed to keep its cannery open by importing more than 50 000 metric tons of pilchard for canning in Walvis Bay. Etosha Fishing is currently negotiating contracts to can pilchards for the Lucky Star and Glenryck SA brands until the end of 2019 and also introduced the Efuta Maasbanker product to markets in Namibia and South Africa.
Namibia spends an average of N$7 billion per annum on food imports. That is according to Manfred Likoro of Food Namibia, who told a business breakfast gathering in Walvis Bay on Wednesday morning that more food should be produced locally, from raw materials grown locally and consumed locally. Residents of the coastal towns are keeping their fingers crossed for a clear, open night sky tonight, to see the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. At 19:14 the earth's shadow will touch the moon's face and move towards a full eclipse that will last 103 minutes. The total eclipse will last 6 hours and 14 minutes. This total lunar eclipse is the 17th total lunar eclipse since 2001, the beginning of this century, which will see 85 total lunar eclipses to 2100.
The total lunar eclipse will be visible across wide swaths of the world – including Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and the Middle East. Those lucky enough to see the 2018 lunar eclipse could also be treated to a view of Mars and the Milky Way, which will be visible to the left of the moon. The next time we will see a similarly long eclipse will be on August 6/7, 2036, which will last for 6 hours and 12 minutes from start to finish.
Interestingly, the August 6/7, 2036 eclipse will not be nearly as long in totality as the June 25/26, 2029 total lunar eclipse, where totality will last for 102 minutes. Total eclipses of the Moon are spectacular events and are easy to see with the naked eye. Public-Private Partnerships: We can learn from Jamaica Rudi Bowe Jamaican Prime Minister, Michael Holness says his country has learnt valuable lessons on public private partnerships (PPP's) and views this as one of the preferred investment vehicles to develop major infrastructure. That was the advice to Namibia this week by Holness during his three days state visit to Namibia. As part of this state visit Holness paid a visit to the port of Walvis Bay on Tuesday where he was received by the Chief Executive of Namport Mr Bisey Uirab and a delegation of senior port officials. Although much impressed with the progress currently made with the completion of the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay, Holness said PPP's are crucial to large projects such as this. It relieves pressure on Government to finance such projects, it facilitates private investor funds, local job creation, improved efficiency in managing these assets and it introduces new technology and new methods. Jamaica introduced PPP's through its development bank as well as ministry of finance and already completed several
mega projects in conjunction with the private sector. These include the upgrade of the country's Sangster International Airport, the development of the East-West and NorthSouth legs of Highway 2000 which is the road transport backbone of this island-nation. Then also the Kingston Container Terminal expansion project where Jamaica expects to handle 3,5 million containers per annum. Jamaica entered into a PPP with Kingston Freeport Terminals Limited, an affiliate of French shipping company CMA CGM, for a period of 30 years. It led to an upfront capital injection of N$970 million and an annual concession payment of N$195 million. According to Holness the Jamaican Government is capitalising on its strategic location in the Caribbean and said his country would assist Namport with expertise to reach its full potential as port hub for this part of the world. Further Explained Holness: Jamaica has
become a role model for several countries around the world since it implemented its PPP policy in 2012. That saw the country completing five major projects with a total investment value of about N$16 billion. Namport CEO Bisey /Uirab said Namport can gain from the experience of Jamaica, specifically in the context of PPP's which is under consideration by Namport. Albeit in a very beginning stage. “We stand to gain from the Jamaican experience and their successful lessons�, said Mr /Uirab. Adding the Namibian Government should consider a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jamaican Government, to source expertise and guidance if Namibia goes into PPP's for ports management. Holness and his delegation were also afforded the opportunity to see progress made with the construction of the new bulk liquid fuel discharge terminal and the bulk fuel storage terminal.

Bright prospects for solar power finance

Development Bank of Namibia Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication, Jerome Mutumba, on solar power finance for enterprise Privately owned renewable energy generation facilities can secure and enhance Namibian enterprise activity, says Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Jerome Mutumba. Currently, Namibia has a deficit in electricity generation capacity. In order to address the shortfall, new capacity is being developed, however, until the local generation is sufficient, Namibia will have to import electricity from other regional sources. Imports place Namibia at a disadvantage, as the country is dependent on pricing offered by exporters of power. Costs are subsequently passed on to users of electricity. In the case of enterprises, this drives up the cost of productivity. At the same time, if elements of exporters' generation capacity fail, Namibia may become subject to load shedding. Mutumba says that as the Southern African sub-continent industrialises, there will be a greater requirement for electricity. Although gas generation is being developed, it is not yet clear if the combined capacity of institutional generators of various forms of electricity will match demand. There may be lags in installing of capacity, delays in the implementation of cross-border distribution agreements and, if the objectives of socio-economic development prove fruitful, further gaps in generation capacity may emerge, he cautions. Privately owned renewable sources of electricity, says Mutumba, offer enterprises cost control as well as a buffer against shortfalls. Mutumba points to the Bank's finance for SunEQ as a good example of the privately owned electricity generation supporting industry. Financed by DBN, the 5MW solar plant was established by a consortium of private companies to provide power to Ohorongo Cement, a major user of electricity. Based on sustainability of Ohorongo, and its power requirements, the Development Bank was able to provide the majority of finance for SunEQ with the knowledge that the solar plant will be viable. The new source of power gives both Ohorongo Cement and SunEQ greater control of costs in terms of the agreement signed between the two companies, and Ohorongo Cement has a greater measure of security in the sustainability of its production. Predictable costing, and associated cost containment, make the beneficiaries of solar energy more competitive and efficient, he adds. Mutumba goes on to say that the vision of a privately owned solar generation is not restricted to heavy industrial users. A significant number of commercial properties and private entities, including retail facilities, are increasing their use of solar power. An enterprise that operates offices from a purpose built office or a residence converted to an office can also improve its cost efficiency with solar panels. Asked about DBN finance for smaller enterprises, Mutumba says it is well within the mandate of the Bank to provide financing, even for SMEs. Enterprise finance typically measures profitability on the basis of revenues generated from business activities, however DBN considers cost efficiency as an important contributor to the bottom line. Subject to the value of savings on electricity, as well as the financial sustainability of the enterprise, the Bank has the ability to provide financing for solar power to all sizes of enterprises, ranging from SMEs to heavy industrial users such as mines and manufacturers. The same, he says, holds true for parastatals and government users. Solar power, Mutumba says, is a resource which is beginning to make an impact in Namibia, however, it is still nascent and has yet to come of age. DBN will light the way. He urges enterprises to contact the Bank with applications for finance and concludes by saying that applicants will find that the Bank has a sunny disposition in this regard.

Swakopmund's town council approved the application of Mr Mc Clune in September last year to manage a parking system in the cbd. Mc Clune owns the business Namibia Parking Solutions which invested N$1,5 million in establishing the parking system. The new system is expected to make more parking available to visitors to the cbd. At the moment many motorists use the parking spaces in town for extended periods, at the expense of visitors to the cbd. Shop owners welcome this management system as it would mean increasing the turn-over of people to and from the cbd to shop. The change in the way parking is managed in Swakopmund is in line with international best practice. It has a strong job creation component. The newly appointed parking marshals are former car guards. The random car guard system is now of the past in the central business district. It must be added that for now, parking outside the cbd will still be free and managed by car guards where applicable. At present around 50 former car guards have been recruited as employees of Namibia Parking Solutions. The number is likely to increase, as the area of coverage is expected to expand in the future. These newly appointed marshals are now earning regular wages and is covered by social security. The system works as follows: when you park your vehicle a parking marshal will register the vehicle's registration number and the time on a handheld information entry device. A ticket is issued and you pay for the time you park. Motorists will also be able to acquire a prepaid parking card at the offices of Namibia Parking Solutions, situated in the old municipal building in town. In the near future an application will also be introduced where-by motorists can use an online map to see where parking is available. Marshals will be on duty from 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays. The display of the ticket on the dash-board will also enable traffic officials to easily inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with the new by-law on parking management. Though it involves a change in the management of public spaces, the new parking system is expected to reduce cases of harassment by unregistered car guards, to reduce crime and theft from vehicles, and to better manage the available spaces to ensure that more motorists are able to access parking space during business hours. Municipal officials hope this will bring a degree of professionalism and public order in the management of parking, and will thus improve the experience of visitors to the town as well as local residents by offering a standardised parking rate and a more efficient service. As noted, a large number of former car guards will be employed on a full time basis and will acquire new skills that are likely to improve their terms of employment and standard of living, with improved opportunities for professional advancement. As with any significant change in public administration, there are likely to be initial misgivings and obstacles, but it is hoped that motorists will soon see the advantage of improved services, of reduced crime, and better regulation of parking within the CBD, which is expected to benefit the motorists, businesses in the area, and the town as a whole. Establishing and building an emergency fund Navigating the high sand lows of personal finances with resilience can be that much easier to manage when you have an emergency fund. Life can be unpredictable, so it is important that when the tide of financial insecurity hits, funds are set aside specifically for unforeseen events a personal financial nature, such as the loss of a job, a debilitating illness or a major repair to your home. Another reason to have an emergency fund is to stop you from relying on credit to bail you out when things get tough. An emergency fund is an account that you should always have but never touch unless you absolutely have to. As a rule of thumb, and to be safe, you should try to have enough money in your emergency fund to cover all of your necessary expenses for a minimum of three to six months. These are things you honestly cannot live without like rent, utilities, food, transportation, and any required debt payments. That amount will vary from person to person, but you should have enough saved up to cover your necessities in case of a financial catastrophe. Saving enough to cover at least three months' expenses may seem unrealistic and unattainable, but with conscious effort and discipline, this financial goal is achievable. To get started, open a savings account solely for an emergency fund and earmark a set amount that goes into it from your salary every month and do not touch it. To help with the discipline of making the monthly contribution, set up an automatic recurring transfer from your current to your savings account. You might even be able to ask your employer to split the monthly emergency fund contribution from your salary, and have them deposit it into these parate savings account automatically. The day may come when you need those funds — really need them — so don't spend them now unless it's an emergency. So, what is an emergency? When a sudden expense pops up, it can feel like an emergency—but that might not be true. Here are three questions that help determine if you need to tap into your emergency savings: 1. Is it unexpected? 2. Is it necessary? 3. Is it urgent? The more you answer yes, the more likely it is an emergency and the more it justifies using money from your emergency fund. Now that you have an understanding of the importance of an emergency fund, get into the habit of working with a budget, pay off your debt, and start saving. You'll be amazed at how quickly your emergency fund piles up when you are no longer paying off debt!

A Senior Counsel and former Judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa, Prof King, as he is popularly known, has a colourful accolade which includes, among others, Professor Extraordinaire at the University of South Africa on Corporate Citizenship, Honorary Professor at the University of Pretoria and Visiting Professor at Rhodes University. His well-articulated presentation included highlights of the contrasts of 19th and 20th century business to 21st century businesses. Businesses in the 19th and 20th century were run by Wealthy families with a single focus and bottom line financial reporting – in automotive terms a car with rear view mirrors but no windscreen. According to Professor King, “The over-arching objective of King IV™ is to make corporate governance more accessible and relevant to a wider range of organisations, and being the catalyst for a shift from a compliance based mindset to one that sees corporate governance as a lever for value creation.” Professor King inter alia highlighted a new challenge of corporate leaders being their duty to the company and not shareholders, i.e. company health and not shareholder wealth. Professor King shared the new company centric model of thinking in a changing corporate governance world, which should be implemented mindfully to achieve the four outcomes of ethical leadership, value creation in a sustainable manner, adequacy of controls and legitimacy of operations. The presentation was graced with a question and answer session by Professor King, in conclusion of the morning's activities.

Da wurde mehrmals über ein Riesenprojekt bzw. eine Entwicklung zwischen Patrysberg und Langstrand oder “woanders”, geschrieben. Warum nicht gleich woanders? Die Wüste ist groß. Acht Milliarden Nam-Dollar Kosten – jetzt, ja, aber bis es fertig ist, 16 Milliarden oder noch mehr. Warum im Dorob-Park? Das Schlimmste ist, dass die Regierung das bezahlt! Sagt mal, für wie blöd hält ihr uns Normalbürger eigentlich?
Was soll das denn?!? Da ist kein Geld für Schulen, Krankenhäuser, Ausbildung, Polizei usw. Andere Entwicklungen werden gestoppt und große Firmen sind gezwungen, Arbeiter zu entlassen und sogar ihren Betrieb zu schließen. Dabei wird immer wieder von Regierungsseite gegen Arbeitslosigkeit “gekämpft”. Interessant ist ja, wer da alles als Aktionär fungiert. Na ja, kein Wunder, wenn man sieht, wer alles dabei ist. Vor Jahren sollte ja ein Golfplatz den Strand entlang von
Vineta bis fast zur Mole angebaut werden. Gern hätte ich auf folgende Fragen eine Antwort, die auch wir Normalbürger verstehen : 1. Wo kommt das Geld her? 2. Warum überhaupt und warum so GROß? 3. Warum in einem Park? Hier in Swakopmund steht das Areal der ehemaligen Eisenbahn - angefangen und nur umzäunt (inzwischen halb verrostet) – leer, L-E-E-R. Wir bitten um Antwort! Man konnte allerdings Süßwasser bei der Stadtverwaltung kaufen. In langen Reihen stand man an. Dort wo heute die Verkaufshalle der Hauptpost steht, war eine Pumpe, die die Menge gewünschtes Wasser ausgab. Man konnte mit Flaschen, Trögen, Eimern oder großen Fässern kommen. SFC Business Squash Second half of the Namib League 2018 Diesel Social League Going into the second half of the league, it's time to check who's where and get down to some serious squash, as there is still time to haul in the lead, that the top teams have at the moment. There are still a couple of score sheets outstanding, nonetheless the current point standings as follow:
The SFC Squash Club hosted the prestigious annual Business League during June and July 2018 with four teams displaying exceptional skills in the quest to secure bragging rights as champions for the next twelve months. It was perhaps one of the closest contested encounters in the history of the club with the four teams needing to battle it out for the top spot until the last round of play. The four teams were Visions Consulting, WB Hardware, Kesla Kitchens and KABT Holdings. Matches were played best out of three (3) games; point a rally to 11 per game. Maretha Mouton vs Emerelda Dames 3-2. Maretha, the force was with her and she subdued her formidable opponent.
