Zhen Hua 8 to depart Walvis Bay as a ship that made history
The heavy load ship, Zhen Hua 8, departs Walvis Bay on 5 March this year after the last of four ship-to-shore cranes were successfully unloaded from her massive cargo deck yesterday afternoon. The vessel delivered Namport’s four ship to shore cranes for the new container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay. Although the delivery of the cranes in itself is historic, Zhen Hua 8 also made history. Delivering her cargo of four ship-to-shore cranes (weighing in total more than 5 000 tons) officially made her the first ship to dock, unload cargo and depart from the new terminal. The unloading operations started on 9 February and was carried out on a 24/7 basis. * The terminal is set for commissioning at the end of 2018 and has surpassed the 75 % completion mark.
The panellists of this very historic moment for our democracy were: Marcel Minni, Susan Kamati Salom, Uaripi Katjiukua, Mathew Kangala, Marcella Katjijova and Max Leonard. These panellists gathered in the boardroom of MICT. Each had strong views on this topic and each of their views was supported by facts. Despite the outgoing arguments, both panellists and the audience were clear on that: gender equality is something that needs to be taught to our children from a very young age and that many responsibilities in the house are for parents to support one another as equals. Gender equality is an example set by parents. Marcella Katjijova said she believes in gender equality and knows that gender equality will pave the way for development in the country. Max Leonard on the other hand felt women and men should never be treated as equals, using reference from the Bible. Susan Kamati Salom debated from the perspective of a household and how gender equality plays a role at home. She supported her argument with experience from home. Salom said she believes that her husband should help her with the children whilst she is doing the cooking. She was of the opinion this is also a platform for instance for bonding between a father and his children. During the opening ceremony of the debate, the Mayor of Swakopmund Clr. Pauline Nashilundo said: “this topic speaks volumes and it evolves around the most debatable topic through the entire world. Gender equality is perceived by many as a mere privilege accorded to women. It is the way they are raised and taught – this separation continues even when people take up occupations in the various sectors of the economy. Over time gender boundaries were created. “Thus said, our concerted efforts should therefore be aimed at liberating this marginalised fraction of our society through various platforms, so that all our people will enjoy maximum opportunities towards a sustainable future”, explained the Mayor. Nashilundo felt addressing gender equality issues in Namibian society should not be left to Government alone, but it must be a collective responsibility for all segments of society. According to Nashilundo, the first step in the actualisation of this dream is to ensure equal access to education programs for all. In particular for the girl child. “To attain this, it means we should move away from traditional gender roles and allow our girls to attend classes and remain in school for the same duration as their male counterparts”, she explained. Nashilundo further said the process of inclusive, sustainable development is bolstered in a society with a strong gender equality foundation. “As much as we agree that gender equality contributes to sustainable development, we must point out there are challenges too”. In conclusion Clr Nashilundo said gender equality is not about lifting the burden from our women, but to bring both sexes on par. At the end of the debate, panellists and the audience all agreed that in order to achieve gender equality in the country, children should be taught from a young age that they are all equal and that boys should also do the same chores around the house as the girl and vice-versa.
The municipality of Swakopmund after an investigation concluded the Platz Am Meer shopping mall development in the town's northern beachfront area introduced problems which include ineffective road infrastructure, noise pollution, littering uncontrolled traffic movement and excessive toxic fumes due to the drastic increase in vehicle traffic. Although it cannot be denied Platz Am Meer brought development and down-stream benefits to Swakopmund, an investigation confirmed what residents have been complaining about right from the outset. In fact, the investigation was done after a letter was received on 12 July 2017 in which problems were set out in detail. In the Council's minutes of its most recent meeting, it is said a resident of Fischreier Street approached Council with a number of complaints. These were investigated and proven “to be valid points”. Some of the complaints were: ineffective road construction, uncontrolled
traffic causing noise pollution and resulting in excessive toxic fumes due to increased traffic en route to Platz Am Meer. It is injurious to the health of residents of the neighbourhood. After receiving the letter, according to the minutes, a joint inspection was carried out to verify the said conditions by officials from various departments in the Swakopmund Municipality. The concerns raised were put to the test and it was found that it carried merits. It was added corrective measures must be taken and it would require “strategic changes”. Traffic control and emissions control were mentioned as high priority concerns. Some corrective measures directly men-tioned were restricting commercial heavy vehicle flows through residential areas and creating safer traffic conditions for domestic vehicles. On the issue of pollution, it was found there are merits in concerns over pollution. The increase in vehicle flows increased exhaust fume emissions and wind-borne litter like plastic bags also increased drastically. Noise pollution was identified as not only originating from increase vehicle flows, but also the fact that the shopping mall makes use of open air music and entertainment among others to advertise
products and services and to lure the public. The shopping mall is open after hours, seven days a week and therefore drastically increases noise pollution in the area.

Capricorn Group Releases Interim Group Results Capricorn Group released its consolidated interim results for the period ending 31 December 2017 on 22 February 2018. Considering the market conditions in the countries where it operates, the group delivered satisfactory results with profit after tax for the six months ended 31 December 2017 increasing by 6.4% compared to the prior year. “During the period under review the group was faced with a number of challenges including reduced liquidity, reduction in interest rates by central banks, the increased cost of funding and the reduced appetite of clients interested in taking up loan facilities. Defaults on loan payments have also increased due to the financial pinch that all our clients are experiencing”, commented Thinus Prinsloo, Group Managing Director. “Notwithstanding the effect of the challenges mentioned above applying pressure on our interest revenue margins, amongst others, and after tax profit, we are proud of the fact that we have continued to fulfill our commitment of being a catalyst of sustainable opportunities to all of our stakeholders in all the regions we operate in. We have catalysed opportunities in moments as small as a reassuring smile from a branch employee to a client in financial turmoil or just having a bad day, to supporting the refurbishment of an entire hospital wing and time spent with our stakeholders to understand their views on our group's strategic issues and direction.” According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) the economy remained in the grip of a recession during the second half of 2017.The NSA estimates that real GDP contracted by 1.9% year-on-year in the third quarter of this
year, following year-onyear contractions of 2.1% and 0.7% in Q1 and Q2respectively. The expectation is that the trend has improved slightly during the last quarter of 2017. The contracting economy saw growth in credit extended to corporate slowing to 1.3% in November 2017, negatively impacting the Namibian banking sector. The operating environment in Botswana also remained challenging, with a 50 bps decrease in the repo rate in October to 5% resulting in a decrease in market liquidity as investors search for higher yielding assets in other markets. The reduction in bank lending rates, combined with the increased cost of funding caused by the tightening liquidity, resulted in a further contraction in banks' interest margins. Although still experiencing some challenges, the Zambian economic environment has improved during the period under review due to currency stability, the reduction in the inflation rate, the improved copper price and a reduction by the Bank of Zambia of its bank rate by 525 bps as well as the statutory reserve ratio. These factors all contributed to increased market activity and a reduction in both lending rates and cost of funding. Net interest income increased by 19.6% to N$896.7 million (Dec 2016: N$749.9 million) largely as a result of the acquisition of Capricorn Investment Holdings (Botswana) (CIHB) and Cavmont Capital Holdings Zambia (CCHZ) which contributed 21.8% to the year-on-year
growth. The normalised net interest income shows a decrease of 0.7%, which is mainly due to the 25 bps interest rate cut in Namibia in August 2017 and 50 bps cut in Botswana in September 2017. Bank Windhoek (BW) also restructured its balance sheet with slower growth in loans and advances and strong growth in liquid assets to reduce liquidity risk. With the liquid asset investments yielding lower returns, it also reduced BW's interest margin. In the announcement, the term 'normalised' is used meaning that, for the sake of meaningful comparison, the following adjustments were made: 1) Prior period results have been adjusted to include the results, assets and liabilities of the group's Botswana and Zambia subsidiaries as if they were acquired at the beginning of the prior reporting period. 2) Capital profit on the partial sale of the Visa Inc. shareholding, in line with the group strategy to realise non-core investments, has been excluded from the December 2017 results. In light of the above, the group's normalised operating expenses increased by 11.6% to N$840.7 million (Dec 2016: N$753.4 million). The above inflation increase is mainly due to: 1) Three new branches opening in Namibia, including the private wealth suite which resulted in an increase in headcount; 2) Capacity building within our digital channels, marketing and strategic customer capabilities; and 3) Technology costs increasing by 17.3% as a
result of the continued investment in IT infrastructure. The normalised cost-toincome ratio for the period under review is 59.9% compared to the normalised cost-to-income ratio of 54.1% for the comparative period. Income from the group's associates increased by 39.7% to N$51.4 million (Dec 2016: N$36.8 million) and contributed 10.6% (Dec 2016: 8.0%) to profit after tax. The year-on-year increase is due to an increase in profit reported by both Santam Namibia Ltd and Sanlam Namibia Holdings (Pty) Ltd. During the period under review, there was a delibe-
rate strategic focus on improving the funding ratios of the group at all levels. Growth in BW funding well exceeded growth in loans and advances, thereby improving the group's loans to funding ratio to 88.1% (normalised 2016: 93.9%). Total funding increased by 34.9% to N$37.2 billion (Dec 2016: N$27.6 billion), mainly due to the acquisition of CIHB and CCHZ. BW's funding increased by 13.8%, largely due to positive growth in term deposits and senior debt. “Our group strongly believes that in order for us to remain relevant, we need to continue delivering on the ever changing needs
of our customers, keep pace with the explosion in new, often disruptive, technologies; and managing the increasing risks faced by the financial services sector”, said Thinus Prinsloo. “This requires us to be innovative and to continuously explore opportunities presented by new investments, new technologies and new product and service offerings. Four injured as vehicle rolls and crashes into wall in Walvis Bay Two accidents occurred only a stone’s throw from the Walvis Bay police station over the weekend. In the first incident on Saturday at around 21:00 the driver of a vehicle had to swerve out for a vehicle that skipped the red light on the intersection of Nangolo Mbumba Street and Rikumbi Kandanga Road. As a result the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a traffic light. At around 02:20 on Sunday a vehicle overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle as he turned from an easterly direction from Rikumbi Kandanga into Nangolo Mbumba Street. The vehicle rolled several times and crashed into a wall. All four occupants were injured and were transported to a local hospital.

National Institute for Special Education receives much welcomed donation from NBL
The National Institute for Special Education (NISE) was once again, for the 17th consecutive year enriched with an annual donation from Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) – a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group. NBL committed itself to another annual donation of 360 cases of its non-alcoholic beverage brands, and re-affirmed its continued support towards NISE, which includes the School for the Hearing Impaired; School for the Visually Impaired, and also the Môreson School for the Mentally Impaired. Principal of the School for the Hearing Impaired, Manuel Oberholzer shared with great excitement that the NBL sponsorship continues to make a huge difference in the existence and financial status of the school. Oberholzer: “NBL's support gives us hope and makes us strong. Their generosity makes a significant difference in all our lives. We generally use these annual donations from NBL for fundraising purposes, in addition to treating our guests and learners with some great tasting soft drinks during the year. We are very grateful, and appreciate it very much.” Principal of the School for the Visually Impaired, Marelize Fransman also stressed that this annual donation by NBL
contributes significantly to the fund-raising activities of the school. Senior Brand Manager at NBL, Robin Rhode expressed excitement over the relationship with NISE. 58 new Chartered Accountants to serve our country's financial- and business sector 58 Candidates pass final qualification examinations to become Chartered Accountants - to serve Namibia's financial and business sectors Windhoek, 23 February. A total of 58 Namibian Chartered Accountant candidates cleared the final hurdle to becoming fullyfledged Chartered Accountants, having equipped themselves in corporate governance, business ethics and the application of international accounting and auditing standards in the interest of and to the benefit of Namibia's public and private sectors. The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN), Mrs Talita Horn, says the Institute is immensely proud to announce that 58 successful candidates passed the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) in November 2017 - a gruelling full day examination implemented as a real-life simulation case study reflecting the de-mands of the modern business world. Sixty four candidates took the exam and 58 were successful (90% pass). This significantly exceeds the 51 who passed in 2016. N$1000 for savage killing of dog A man was fined N$1000 for animal cruelty by the Namibian Police in Walvis Bay this week, after he admitted to killing a young Bullterrier dog by hitting it with heavy objects. Two more people were seen taking part in this barbaric attack on the dog, but proved to be cowards by denying involvement and allow their accomplice to take the wrap alone. Several people witnessed the attack and it compelled the Police, who at first was not very energetic to attend to the incident, to give the culprit the fine. Animal cruelty is punishable by either a fine or prison conviction. Unfortunately, many Namibians still lack a culture of empathy towards animals and subject both domestic- and animals of burden (draught animals like donkeys, horses and oxen) to inhumane treatment every day right across the country. Four drug dealers were convicted in the magistrates court in Walvis Bay on Tuesday morning and slapped with hefty fines amounting to a total of N$40 000 or each facing eighteen months in prison. Logan Pretorius, Reggenald Carlo Bezuidenhout, Sandra Riobo and Genielle Pretorius were contesting their innocence since their first court appearance in the matter in October 2015, but evidence against the four was overwhelming. At the time, Pretorius was also informed that he risks having his property and other belongings seized in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) if the investigation found he accumulated his wealth from drug proceeds. In sentencing them, Magistrate Sindano Liwo-yo said he is giving them a second chance to clean up their lives, but added dealing in drugs is a growing problem in Namibian society. Simultaneously drug use is also growing among Namibians and it is a social evil that needs to be rooted out. Swakopmund Swimming Club (SSC) did well at Swim Championships
The medal winners are from the left, Danielle Mostert, Maximillian Betts, Damian Mostert and Darren van Rensburg The swimmers of the Swakopmund Swimming Club (SSC) fared well at the championships last weekend. The swimmers won 6 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze medals for individual events and a bronze with the men's relay team. The SSC ended 4th in the final team Team events: standings with the women's team Men's relay Maximillian Betts, Joshua achieving a 3rd place overall and the Cleghorn, Daniel Louw, Damian Mostert men's team 4th overall. got the bronze medal. The individual accomplishments: Darren van Rensburg will be joining the Maximillian Betts, 5 silver 3 bronze SSC for the next season. Kudus wins Coastal Barbarian team
Kudus rugby team played a friendly game against a coastal Barbarians team, made up from from Walvis Bay and Swakopmund players. Kudus won the game 63-40.
The game was preceded by a rugby clinic for boys. Both events took place at the Narraville stadium, home to Kudus. Kudus scored eleven tries. Unfortunately only four tries were converted. The Barbarians scored six tries with five conversions. The first half belonged to Kudus with nine tries. With the start of the second half, the team moved in a relaxed mode. The Barbarians took advantage and scored four tries. Kudus regained shape and scored two more tries in the last ten minutes. Despite a very high try-conversion ratio it was not enough for the Barbarians to win the match. Kudus were the victors with a score on the board of 63 to 40. The coaching staff of Kudus was satisfied with the performance of the team, but conceded there is still much to do before the frist league game in a couple of weeks from now. 4th Walvis Bay parkrun The 4th parkrun took place in Walvis Bay on Saturday. This weekly community sport event every Saturday is growing from strength to strength. On Saturday 346 people participated, running, jogging or walking the 5km course along the Walvis Bay lagoon. Of these participants 93 were first timers and 137 participants recorded new personal bests. The male record is held by Erich Goeieman who recorded a time of 15:17 on 24 February (event number 4). The female record is held by Natania du Plessis who recorded a time of 23:15 on 24th February 2018 (event number 4). The Age Grade course record is held by Erich Goeieman who recorded 87.35% (15:17) on 24 February (event number 4). The event was made possible by 11 volunteers: Michelle Wilson, James Wilson, Dries Schoonbee, Elizabeth Muller, Wikus Heyns, Caroline Gruhn, Ryan Gruhn, Peter Nakaleke, Werner Bachmann, Klaus Eckhard Gruhn and Manja Trollip.
