Locker vom Hocker The Namibian ports authority (Namport) hosts a public information session at the Mission to Seafarers at Walvis Bay next Wednesday to update interested parties on progress with regard to the construction of the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay. The container terminal island is constructed by Chinese construction giant China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC) and the groundbreaking of the project was on 19 May 2014. The island is 40 hectares in size and upon completion of the civil works, a state of the art container terminal will be constructed and equipment installed which will boost the port of Walvis Bay’s current capacity of 350 000 twenty foot equivalent units (TEU’s) per annum to 750 000 TEU’s. The cost of the project is N$4 billion of which Namport had to seek financing of N$3 billion, according to project details. The terminal will add an additional 600m of quay space to the port of Walvis Bay as well as a passenger ship terminal. · Also on Wednesday, Namport will see the official re-opening of the Walvis Bay Syncrolift which was closed since 7 April this year for major refurbishment. The Syncrolift is in use since 1973 and since no broad spectrum refurbishment work were undertaking. The lift platform and side transfer system were the key focus areas of the refurbishment and will add a significant life span to the Syncrolift at the background of Walvis Bay positioning itself as the preferred hub for ship repairs on the West African coast.
Two killed in crash near B2 - Spitzkoppe turn-off Two people were killed instantly in a side impact collision between two vehicles, a sedan and a hatch-back, near the turn-off to Henties Bay on the B2 near the Spitzkoppe yesterday morning. The impact of the crash caused both occupants of the sedan to be flung from the vehicle. They were killed. The only occupant of the hatch-back was the driver who sustained injuries. One of the vehicles broke in half as a result of the
crash.
Elderly Swakopmund man on charge of culpable homicide after killing pedestrian and injuring two others in accident Erwin Leuschner 69 Year-old Swakopmund resident allegedly with his vehicle knocked over two pedestrians and a cyclist on Tuesday evening whilst travelling from DRC towards Mondesa. All three victims were critically injured, but one of the injured, a young woman, passed away shortly after arrival at hospital. The driver has been charged with culpable homicide, drunken driving and reckless and or negligent driving. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the pensioner was driving a Nissan Hard-body pick-up (N18611S) at about 18:00 when he allegedly bumped the two pedestrians, Penehupifo Stefanus (19) and Annatolia Wil-
bard, as well as the cyclist, Mathias Akwenye, who was crossing the road. All three sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Swakopmund State Hospital. Stefanus succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival at the hospital while the other victims were admitted
in a critical but stable condition. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, remained unharmed and was arrested at the scene. He is due to make his first court appearance today (26 May). The next of kin of the deceased person were informed. Police investigations continue.

Piquet Jacobs The Tunacor Group Limited announced on Wednesday a N$160 million fishing vessel the company has ordered from a Spanish shipbuilder that will receive its final fittings and trimmings in Namibia, in order to bring a portion of the project to Namibia to create local jobs and local income generating capacity. This project is to become a trailblazer to develop Namibia's capacity in general limit its foreign order book only to segments of work delivery that cannot be sourced or carried out locally. The fishing vessel, MVF Oshiveli, is a “first born” for Namibia in many instances. Not only will this become the post-Independent Namibia's first ship building project, but the vessel was designed by Tunacor's Technical Department. The project is twofold: The bulk of the vessel is to be constructed by Armon Shipyards SA in Vigo, Spain, but the final fittings will be completed in Namibia for the benefit of local job creation and local business opportunity. The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhardt Esau, was a guest of honour at the launch of the project by Tunacor in Walvis Bay on Wednesday and said the project is evidence that job creation in the fishing industry should not be limited to create work on fishing vessels or in fish processing plants, but that the entire fishing industry value chain can create jobs within the sector. According to Esau the current work force of close to 16 000 fishing industry workers can be tripled if the entire value chain of the fishing industry is put into motion to create work and local value. A N$ 160 million budget has been made available for the construction which is estimated to take 18 months. The vessel is a big step for Tunacor and the Namibian economy as whole because of the opportunities it brings. “The initiative to domesticate shipbuilding activities in Namibia
is a paradigm shift which shows that we should not always endeavour to create jobs in the fisheries sector only through fishing activities, but we can diversify to include jobs in shipbuilding and other unit operations in fishery and maritime value chains. We must explore all ways of retaining the Namibian dollar locally, while attracting more foreign
exchange, that is how the country will become rich,” Esau further commented . The fishing trawler measuring 53 meters long and 11.5 meters wide has a gross tonnage of 1200 tons and a cargo capacity of 500 tons of fish. The vessel will be year-round operational, as it will be capable of catching hake, monk and horse mackerel, three main commercial
species exploited in Namibia. The vessel will incorporate the latest engine- and trawling technology, ensuring the optimal fuel consumption and maximum operational capabilities while reducing emissions and waste. Tunacor is expected to reduce over 15% of the construction costs by going local, bringing significant savings to the company. “This initiative by Tunacor Group will not only retain a significant proportion of the shipbuilding budget here at home, but will also
Mother of abandoned baby Piquet Jacobs apprehended The mother of the newborn baby girl, which was dumped in the bushes next to the railway line in Narraville on Friday morning, has been identified and arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Swakopmund after a member of the public tipped off police. The suspect (23) is believed to be a resident of Mariental in the Hardap region, and was visiting family members in Walvis Bay at the time of the incident. She will appear in the Walvis Bay magistrates court today.

include the 200 direct jobs we expect to create by building this vessel. 60 of these positions will be on-board and 140 will be land based. There will also be hundreds of jobs indirectly created in the supply, maintenance and logistic chains.” The new vessel will bring more revenue for the fishing sector and Tunacor but also for the government as resource rent in the form of taxes and levies. It will assist in increasing the country's pace of industrialisation and economic diversification.

Standard Bank moves employees for their health It is a common fact that a healthy body constitutes a healthy mind which yields fruitful results in the workplace. She added that under the main theme, there were two campaigns employees could hone in on in terms of which best spoke to them, these campaigns are the “Take-the-stairs” campaign, “Exercise @ Your Desk” campaign and to end off the initiative, a Zumbathon will be held on the 2nd June at the bank's head offices. “Through the “Take-the-stairs” campaign, employees were encouraged to take stairs, instead of using the lift to motivate them to be active. As for mental and emotional health, exercise releases certain chemicals in your brain that help boost feelings of happiness and wellbeing. For the “Exercise @ Your Desk” campaign, a qualified Biokineticist, Christo from Jackie Retief Biokinetics conducted on-site sessions to show employees that one can do exercises at your desk and employees actively participated,” she explained. Fouche reiterated that movement is not just good for one's body and overall physical and mental health, but it improves your performance at work, increases productivity and concentration is improved during tasks. This initiative is especially handy for people who suffer from High Blood pressure, Elevated cholesterol or Diabetes and or people who have a BMI greater than 30. “Every journey begins with a single step – so take care of your body, and it will take care of you,” Fouche concluded, encouraging everyone to take the first step towards creating a healthy body and mind.

Jason Jason remains in custody, the fifteen-year-old boy was released in care of a guardian and Mika Nekwaya is on bail of N$2 000. Salonika Ngavee (45) appeared on a charge of defeating and obstructing the course of justice. The matter was postponed to 23 October for plea and trial. The accused have been warned. Mario Mokalabatho (21) appeared on a charge of theft. The matter was postponed to 29 June for further investigation. The accused is on bail of N$2 000. Henock Fanuel (21) appeared on a charge of theft. The accused was found guilty and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment term. Moses Hanana (45) appeared on a charge of refusing to provide a specimen of breath or blood. The matter was postponed to 29 June for legal aid. The accused is on bail of N$5 000. Musutua Maikoruavi (26) appeared on a charge of common assault. The matter was postponed to 29 June for further investigation. The accused is on bail of N$1 000. Gerson Geigob (34) and Diana Ingrid Geingos (33) appeared on charges of corrupt acquisition of private interest by public officer and corruptly using office or position for gratification. The matter was postponed to 19 September for continuation of trial. The accused have been warned. Dennis Tsuseb (23) appeared on a charge of possession of potentially dangerous dependence- producing drugs. The matter was postponed to 18 September for lab results. The accused is on bail of N$2 000. Sedney Halupe (24) appeared on a charge of perjury. The matter was postponed to 16 August for plea and trial. The accused is on bail of N$1 500. Terence Beukes (32) appeared on charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The matter was postponed to 26 July for plea and trial. The accused remains in custody.
Municipal truck stolen and abandoned Piquet Jacobs
A municipal truck was stolen on Saturday morning at approximately 05:00, the incident was reported to the police shortly after. The truck was then found abandoned at Afrodite Beach hours later. The suspect(s) are believed to have stolen the truck and fled with the truck, mowing down part of the pole fencing along 18th street east before abandoning the truck where it was driven into the sand and got stuck. The municipality has left the matter in the hands of the police for investigation to apprehend the culprit(s).

Four vehicles involved in accident between Swakopmund towards Arandis The occupants of four vehicles miraculously sustained no serious injuries after being involved in an accident of an overtaking manoeuvre gone horribly wrong. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a double cab pick-up trauck with four occupants travelling towards Swakopmund tried to reportedly overtake a hatch-back vehicle when vehicles approached from the front. The driver of the pick-up attempted on moving back to his lane but pushed the hatch-back off the road resulting in the vehicle overturning. The pick-up was swang back into the oncoming lane, clipping an approaching pick-up on the rear-side, also hitting another hatch-back. Fortunately no serious injuries were reported at the scene, contrary to the severety of damages caused by the accident. *This is the second incident where a mining vehicle is involved in an accident under a week.

Police continues search for mother of abandoned newborn baby The Namibian Police in Erongo is calling on the public at large for assistance in tracing the mother of a newborn baby girl, which was dumped in the bushes next to the railway line in Narraville. The crying baby was discovered by mere chance on Friday morning by a member of the public. The baby is healthy and in good condition. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the crying baby was discovered at around 07:30 by a member of the public who was on the way to the industrial area to look for work. He heard the cries of a baby and found the new-born zipped in a brown travelling bag placed in the reeds near Neptune Street. He immediately alerted the police. Three Chinese nationals sustained serious and minor injuries respectively after they were involved in a freak accident on Saturday afternoon in the dunes south of Walvis Bay. The tourists were sitting in a stationary vehicle which rolled down a dune. The incident was confirmed by deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo. According to Iikuyu a total of six Chinese tourists were on a tour to Sandwich Harbor when the unfortunate incident occurred. The tour guide, who was driving a Nissan Patrol vehicle, parked the car on top of a dune in the vicinity of Sandwich Harbor about 30 kilometers from Walvis Bay. “While on top of a dune three Chinese together with the driver got out of the vehicle to take photos while the other three Chinese nationals remained in the car,” Iikuyu said. Husab mine road claims first fatality The police in Erongo is investigating an employee of a contractor working at the Husab Uranium Mine for culpable homicide. The suspect was driving a vehicle, belonging to Chinese Nuclear Engineering Company (CNEC), to the mine on Friday afternoon when the car overturned resulting in one fatality. It is the first fatality reported on the stretch of road since it was opened. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the suspect, Vetuesapi Hengari (26), was travelling from Swakopmund to the mine in a Toyota Fortuner (N2728S). Der Hofmarschall Knickebein, gespielt von Ingrid Sieg (Anm.: die heute als 81Jährige noch immer in ihrem eigenen Haus in Swakopmund lebt), eroberte sich schon mit seinem ers-ten Auftritt als Ansager die Herzen d e r K i n d e r. E i n e schwierige Rolle hatte Ursula Milo (Anm.: lebt heute in Südafrika) als braut-suchender Prinz zu meistern, aber sie war dieser Aufgabe durch-aus gewachsen. Die Kurzgeschichte von Wolfram Eicke wird in vier Episoden wiedergegeben. Folge 3 “Auf einem Schulhof stand ein Junge mit einem funkelnagelneuen Fahrrad, umringt von seinen Klassenkameraden. "Woher hast Du denn das tolle Rad?" fragte einer von ihnen. "Na, wißt ihr denn nicht, was heute für ein Tag ist? Heute ist doch der 22. November, und das ist mein Geburtstagsgeschenk!" Der kleine Tag jauchzte. Endlich freute sich jemand über ihn. "Für diesen Jungen bin ich der Höhepunkt des ganzen Jahres", dachte der kleine Tag glücklich. Mit neuem Eifer schaute er sich auf der Welt um. Er sah das Meer! Die Wellen klatschten gegen die Felsen am Strand, und die Gischt sprühte schäumend auf. Es war ein wundervolles Schauspiel, von dem sich der kleine Tag kaum losreißen konnte. Sein Blick streifte über die Berge. Ein Bergsteiger mühte sich keuchend, einen schneebedeckten Gip-

Der kleine Tag freute sich mit ihm. Er sah viele Städte, und verwundert schaute er den Menschen zu. Offenbar hatten die meisten nicht viel Freude an ihrer Arbeit. Män-ner mit stumpfen Gesichtern betätigten Hebel, Knöpfe und Schalter. Sie stellten Gegenstände her, deren Sinn und Zweck der kleine Tag nicht verstand. In einer großen Halle standen lange Schlan-
gen wartender Menschen. Sicher gab es dort etwas Besonderes! Aber nein: Wenn die Menschen schließlich einen Schalter erreicht hat-ten, hinter dem ein streng blickender Mann saß, mußten sie viele Kreuze in kleine Kästchen auf Papierbögen machen und auch noch Geld dafür bezahlen. Der kleine Tag wunderte sich. In einem Park saß ein Mann auf einer Bank und schrieb. Als er fertig war, sah er sich zufrieden lächelnd um. Er hatte bestimmt

etwas schönes geschrieben. Der kleine Tag freute sich. In einem Fenster stand ein Musiker und pfiff fröhlich eine kleine neukomponierte Melo-die vor sich hin. Der kleine Tag hätte am liebsten mitgepfiffen. Der Nachmittag brachte ihm neue Erfahrungen: Spielende Kinder, Leute beim Spazierengehen, Menschen, die sich zum gemütlichen Kaffeetrinken zusammenfanden. Er sah einen jungen Mann an einer Haustür klingeln und ein hübsches Mädchen herauskommen. Die beiden faßten sich an den Händen und gingen in einen Park. Auf der Brücke über einen kleinen Bach blieb der junge Mann stehen und sah dem Mädchen in die Augen. "Ich hab' dich lieb!" sagte er und gab ihr einen Kuß. Dem kleinen Tag wur-de ganz heiß vor Freu-de. Das war sicher das allerschönste Erlebnis für ihn hier auf der Erde. Als die Dämmerung kam und der kleine Tag seine Aufgabe erfüllt hatte, eilte er aufgeregt nach Hause. Alle Tage hatten sich schon versammelt und erwarteten gespannt seinen Bericht. "Na, wie war's?" fragte ihn sein Vater, "bist Du ein guter Tag gewesen?" "Oh ja!" rief der kleine Tag, und alle seine Erlebnisse sprudelten wie ein Wasserfall aus ihm heraus. "...und dann haben sie sich geküßt!" rief er am Schluß seines Berichts ganz atemlos und sah sich erwartungsvoll in der Runde um.... Fortsetzung folgt!
Locker vom Hocker Da tauchen sie wieder auf...
Liebe Küstenleser! Und plötzlich tauchen in Swakopmund aus den Fluten des Atlantik unweit der Betonpfeiler der alten Eisenbahnbrücke vor der Tiger Reef Bar alte Eisenbahnschienen aus dem Jahre 1915 auf, die Meer und Sand verschluckt hatten. Da werde ich doch glattweg an Argentiniens Atlantis erinnert. Der Kurort Villa Epecuén war 1985 vom Wasser überschwemmt worden , als der See Lago Epecuén nach heftigen Regenfällen über die Ufer trat und die Stadt verschlang. Erst seit 24 Jahren gibt der See den Kurort langsam wieder frei. Seit 2009 zieht sich das Wasser dort pöh-a-pöh zurück. Straßenzug um Straßenzug taucht wieder auf, und als Tourist darf man heute die Ruinen der einst florierenden Stadt bewundern. Wenn aber Namib und Atlantik nach über hundert Jahren ein Relikt des ehemaligen Transportwesens wieder freigibt, dann ist das nochmal eine ganz andere Ekstase. Die verschüttete Bahnlinie an der Swakopmündung wurde nämlich unter unsagbar schwierigen Umständen errichtet. Bis zum Ausbruch des 1. Weltkrieges fand der Verkehr zwischen Walfischbai und Swakopmund nur mittels gelegentlicher Maultierkarrenverbindung oder zu Pferde am Strand entlang statt. Als am 25. Dezember 1914 die südafrikanischen Unionstruppen in Walfischbai landeten und für den Aufmarsch von vier Kriegsschiffen und neun Transportern große Mengen Kriegsmaterial aller Art löschten, musste man schnell einen Plan machen. In aller Eile wurde vom Witwa-
tersrand Rifle Regiment eine Bahnlinie in Kapspur (Eisenbahngleis mit einer schmalen Spurtweite von 42 englischen Zoll bzw. 1067 Millimetern) in Küstennähe gebaut, die bereits in wenigen Wochen, nämlich am 11. Februar fertiggestellt war. Man stelle sich das vor: Mit primitivsten Mitteln wurde innerhalb kürzester Zeit ein effektives Eisenbahngleis in den Wüstensand gesetzt. Nicht nur das! Vier
des Swakops drohte jedoch jedesmal der Verkehr ins Inland zum Erliegen zu kommen. So wurde 1925 mit dem Bau einer großen, etwa 330 m langen Eisenbahnbrücke begonnen, die im April 1926 dem Verkehr übergeben wurde. Da die mächtigen Be-

Rossmund Golf News In spite of the threatening East Weather, a field of 21 brave (or golf crazy?) souls took to the fairways at Rossmund Golf Course early on Sunday morning. Halfway through the first 9 holes the wind came to upset some players' game plans. It made it very difficult to get that little white ball into the hole which seemed to become smaller by the second. At the end of this gruelling round a weary and red-faced (literally) band gathered at the 19th hole for welcome relief and liquid refreshment. The prize- giving was ably handled by chairman, Achmet Abrahams and 61 year-old birthday boy sponsor, Cashbox van Wyk, assisted by Cashie's grandchildren, Danika and Kristen. An interesting selection of prizes had everyone in smiles because everybody received a prize. The top prize- winners were: 1st - L Abrahams (35pts) count-out 2nd - T Boesch ( 35 pts) 3rd- C van Wyk (35 pts) Other prizes: Two-clubs: G Cloete, T Boesch and D Smith. On Wednesday the 17th of May we had 17 golfers take to the field to compete in the weekly “Wednesday Competitions�. As seems to be the case for Wednesdays some pretty good scores were posted. Thank you to Marco Swarts and the Pros Shop for the sponsoring of the prizes. This time the format was changed to a BB stableford which seems to be the favoured format of our golfers. A brilliant field of 34 players came out to compete. A big thank you to Gerhard van der Merwe and the affiliates of Destination Swakopmund for sponsoring the prizes. Thank you also to all the golfers for the support.
