∙Coronavirus cases top 90 ......and counting Approximately twenty armed soldiers and members of the Namibian Police entered two restaurants in Swakopmund yesterday, demanding the coast is back to level 1 lockdown. That would mean serving take away only and no customers may be seated.
The container ship CMA CGM Mediterranean Bridge called at Walvis Bay this week, to load and discharge a total of 2 748 containers. That is the single biggest number of containers handled on one ship in the history of the port of Walvis Bay. See more on page 2.
The two restaurant managers were allegedly subjected to threats and verbal abuse. Despite their calls there is no need for so many law enforcers into the restaurants as there were no dangers or threats, the group continued with their threats. They refused to discuss the regulations that states Swakopmund is under stage 3 and despite please remain in large numbers, armed with assault rifles in the restaurants. Inquires to the Namibian Police regional headquarters remained unanswered at the time of going to press. At the time of going to press there was also no official announcement forthcoming that the towns would revert to level 1. It must be treated as rumours, in the absence of any official guidance. In the meantime, calls are made for both Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Arandis residents to exercise common sense and do their part to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. It is clear by now that the fight against the spread of the virus cannot be stopped by a lockdown neither by legislation. Given this situation, the only solution is for residents to step up their vigilance with non-pharmaceutical interventions. What are non-pharmaceutial interventions? ·Wash your hands regularly during the day. ·Make use of every opportunity to sanitize your hands when in public places like shops and in crowded areas. ·Wear your mask. The mask limits opportunities for the Coronavirus to spread through saliva droplets. ·If you sneeze or cough, do so without spreading droplets - sneeze in your closed elbow, use a hanker chief or tissue. Ensure to regularly replace hanker chiefs or tissues. ·Avoid crowded areas. Although restaurants and coffee shops are open avoid crowds at all cost and make sure to honour relevant legislation in place. ·Continue to only leave your home when necessary to visit food shops and to exercise. ·Try and limit your daily outings to three outings per day maximum. Firstly, your work, secondly to buy food and if you can limit your outings to exercise and to socialise. Exercise common sense. ·Don’t socialize in high risk areas, especially where alcohol is involved. Alcohol drops people’s inhibitions and drops your guard against being safe at all times. ·If at all possible - work from home. Despite Erongo now on level 3, it is important to understand that the dangers of contracting the Coronavirus is
An account appears below of a Swakopmund medical practitioner who referred a patient of his to be tested for the Coronavirus on 15 June. On orders of this doctor, the patient was admitted to hospital two days later, as the person was not feeling well. When the patient tested positive, the doctor was ordered into the Swakopmund Bungalows for isolation, pending the outcome of a Covid-19 test conducted on him. Also, the resident physician at the hospital who treated the patient was also tested and isolated. Indications were they would have to stay in isolation for 48-hours and that the test results would be available within this time frame. Both the physician and this doctor's test came out negative. The physician was allowed to leave the Bungalows to return to work. The doctor was told to stay in isolation, despite him offering to further isolate in a garden flat at his residence. However, the conditions under which he is kept at the Swakopmund Bungalows is not up to standard.

My family had to bring pillows, crockery and basic things that were not there. The meals were unacceptable and private caterers were then brought in. Sometimes there is no meals”, Namib Times was told by this particular doctor yesterday. Adding, as he was not prepared for a lengthy stay his family members brought him food, clothes and other necessities. The items were handed to him through the perimeter fence. The doctor (remember he tested negative) spent some of his time jogging on the premises of the Bungalows, only adding to the trouble. Soon he was visited by members of the Namibia Defence Force who told him that what he was doing is illegal. The doctor again offered to selfisolate as this is also permissible within the framework provided by the World Health Organisation. It was turned down again. “I am not prepared to go through this exercise every time a patient of mine tests positive for the Coronavirus. The best option is to stop working and let the Ministry of Health and Social Services take over matters”, a medical practitioner said when the validity of the above information was tested. “The Swakopmund doctors are unanimous in their view. This treatment of medical doctors is unacceptable. We are no longer prepared to advise patients to go for Covid-screening, if this is how we as doctors are treated who has a positive Covid-patient. Self-isolation is legal and possible. We don't need to be policed as we know what is expected of us in this situation”, several medical practitioners say”.

Namport donates temporary shelter for the Walvis Bay COVID-19 Checkpoint The Namibian Ports Authority, through its Social Investment Fund, recently donated a mobile office to the Navy Commander of the Namibian Police in the Erongo region. The office is intended to be used by the men and women in uniform manning the Walvis Bay COVID-19 Checkpoint. The need arose since the staff members deployed at the checkpoint were being exposed to unfriendly weather elements which hampered their performance.

The donation, which comes at a time where the Erongo region continues to record an increase in the number of positive cases related to the COVID-19 virus will ensure that the law enforcers are able to dedicate their attention to executing their duties unhindered at the checkpoint. The checkpoint became operational on 05 May 2020 when the Temporary Isolation Truck port facility was officially opened in collaboration with various stakeholders. The donation is valued at N$50 000 which will be used to pay the rental fee of the mobile office for the next 6 months subject to future renewals. The Authority has since the beginning of the outbreak in March 2020 spent over N$400,000.00 towards the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Its previous donations were towards the residents of the Twaloloka Informal Settlement in
Kuisebmond by providing them with twenty (20) mobile toilets, medical equipment and supplies to the COVID-19 Isolation Facility at the Walvis Bay State Hospital, hand sanitizers and high risk gloves, plus 240 branded water bottles. In the same disposition, Namport made a monetary donation towards the Walvis Bay Corridor Group Wellness team to purchase gloves and thermal guns which would be used at border posts against the fight of the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the entity also donated towards the Keetmanshoop Police in the ||Karas region. The Namibian Ports Authority continues to closely monitor the requirements throughout the progression of the pandemic and within its means, and has pledged to do its best in continuing to contribute towards the national efforts to cushion the impact of the outbreak.

Erongo Marine Pays Tribute To Seafarers In solidarity with seafarers the world over, Erongo Marine Enterprises (EME) joined the international maritime community to pay tribute to the unsung heroes of the seas in recognition of the annual Day of the Seafarer celebrated on 25 June.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of this special day, which aims to recognise and give thanks to seafarers globally for their unique contribution to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society. It also aims to recognise the risks and personal costs they bear while on their jobs. Based in Walvis Bay, EME is one of the largest employers in the local Horse Mackerel industry. “Our crew is the life-blood of our business. Without their hard work under very difficult circumstances at sea, there would be no Erongo Marine Enterprises,” Managing Director Dr Martha Uumati said in a statement. She also paid tribute to all seafarers in the local fishing and maritime industry who through their hard work and sacrifice have contributed, and continue to contribute, to the economic success of Walvis Bay and the country at large. After mining, the fishing industry is Namibia's second biggest export earner of foreign currency. It is also the third largest economic sector in terms of contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supports around 16000 jobs. Dr Uumati said “We must never forget that it is our workers that drive this very important sector and
ultimately the economy of our country. Yet, often very little recognition is given to the workforce. I hope that entities will recognise this more and eventually give workers the recognition they deserve.” The focus of this year's global campaign, promoted through social media with the hashtag “Seafarers Are Key Workers”, specifically seeks to raise awareness of the work seafarers have done during the Covid-19 pandemic and to thank them for their contribution. It also encourages people to treat them with respect and dignity so they can continue the good work they have been doing. Seafarers have to endure many hardships and tough working conditions under extraordinary circumstances at sea, sometimes even risking their lives as was evident from the tragic sinking of the Hangana Seafood fishing trawler, the MFV Resplendent earlier this year. In her tribute to the crew of EME Dr Uumati said: “You work selflessly, within the deep seas for long periods to ensure the success of our company, and you do so at a great personal cost to yourself and your families. Apart from working in challenging conditions, I know from experience having worked at sea myself that one of the
biggest difficulties you face – not out of choice – is staying away from your loved ones while you carry out your duties at sea to sustain livelihoods. Missing family events such as the birth of child,saying good bye to a loved one, or missing out on birthdays and weddings, are all sacrifices you have to make to ensure the success of our company.” The Covid-19 global pandemic has placed renewed focus on the challenging circumstances under which seafarers has to work. According to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), nearly 90% of the world's food, fuel, raw material and manufactured goods are delivered by sea. Seafarers are at the heart of global supply chains. Even at times when air traffic had stopped in many places across the globe in recent months, goods continued to be moved by sea to ensure the flow of vital goods like food, medicines and medical supplies. In the same vein, the EME crew continued working throughout the local State of Emergency lockdown. “As an essential service food supplier, EME remained committed to the uninterrupted supply of food to the most vulnerable communities in our country and beyond, who at times of crisis such as now, heavily rely on access to affordable food,” Dr Uumati pointed out. She explained that Horse Mackerel is a low-cost protein and a vital source of nourishment for the lower-income market. Most of EME's operations are sea-based, thus isolating its seagoing staff from onshore contact. Said Dr Uumati: “In the interest of keeping our crew safe and Covid-19 free, they had to remain onboard for extended periods of much longer than usual – a commitment Erongo Marine truly appreciated. However, we also realised that mental fatigue and physical exhaustionset in at some point. After all, these are human beings. In the end we allowed our crew off the vessels, even if it meant going on land to be quarantined. At least this allowed them to make callsto family and friends.” Foreign technical or expert crew employed by EME are still stuck in Namibia due to international travel bans and safety protocols and have not been home since before the local outbreak of Covid-19, yet another sacrifice of a seafarer.

MINE SURVEY DRAUGHTSPERSON Uis tin Mining Company Pty Ltd is seeking the services of a qualified Mine Survey Draughtsperson at its Mine in Uis. Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for all the drafting related tasks within the Mining Department. The incumbent will also be required to provide inputs that will ensure that the tasks executed are within the prescribed time frame and the outputs of the tasks are measurable in terms of the quality and the standards at the Uis Tin Mining Company. Key Performance Areas include but not limited to: • Draw plans and sketches as requested on a hoc basis. • Ensure that all plans are kept, backup and filed in a logical order. The plans to be kept and updated in accordance to the accepted drafting standards and conventions • Ensure that back-ups and filing of all relevant information takes place and is up to date in the mining data base. • Must be familiar with the DGPS systems and be able to do survey pickups at the mine. • Ensure Statutory Plans are kept up to date and submitted to the Ministry of Mines annually. • Ensure compliance to all legal requirements, relevant procedures, and the company's Code of Practice. • Generate plans for Blast-hole collars and Loading Composites, indicating all relevant information. • Ensure that the signed off plans are filed and kept in a logical order in the data base. • Ensure timeous update of the plans for Blast Block and Composites in the data base. • Update monthly mining plan and ensure all hazards in and around the mining area is indicated on the plan, as per the regulations. • Ensure the company's hazard plan is kept up to date. • Interacts with Geology and Mine Planning to ensure seamless data integration takes place without any data loss. • Determine volumetric data for planning purposes and assist planning with dumps and stockpile designs. • Adheres to all laid down SHEQ related standards, practices, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and Statutory Compliances. The NSC re-affirms that they are indeed in consultation with our key stakeholder and strategic partners including the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, AUSC Region 5 Youth Games decision with regards to the possibility of hosting these games. The Chief Administrator at the NSC Simataa Mwiya said the NSC wish to make it categorically clear that the information about the National Youth Games as shared in the form of a press statement or discussion during the recent information sharing session in the Omusati region does not represent the position of the NSC with regards to the scheduling of the event and venues. Mwiya said “It should also be noted that the information with regardsto the preparations of the regional teams as per regional structured events falls within the mandate of the Regional Chairpersons, with the overall operations remains that of the NSC Secretariat.” “As a regulator of sport in the country, we have a responsibility towards our stakeholders, as such we shall continue to ensure that the information we disseminate is precise and consistent at all time. Furthermore, we seek to promote a positive brand image in line with our corporate strategy” Mwiya said. Mwiya added that only an authorised spokesperson with expert knowledge on the matter at hand shall have formal engagements with internal and external stakeholders or via media engagements and press releases and most importantly the right communication channels used. “This further demands consultation with our key shareholders to ensure that our events are properly scheduled to avoid and overlap with already planned events as this could cause a logistical and operational nightmare if not well matched” Mwiya added. Mwiya affirmed that they are in consultation with key stakeholders and strategic partners, including the sports ministry, with regards to the possibility of hosting the games and a final decision based on sporting activities allowed within the prevailing Covid-19 regulations and on when and where the games will be held will be communicated.
Olympic day encourages active healthy living The Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) in partnership with the Basketball Artist School (BAS) hosted a live Olympic Day workout session at the Katutura Youth Complex. The online Olympic workout session aimed at inspiring athletes along with their fans to remain active during the crisis, served as the focus for this year's annual International Olympic Day celebrations. This one-hour exercise workout session entitled “Stay Strong”, “Stay Active”, “Stay Healthy” became a global theme for national Olympic Commi-
ttees across the world to collectively join hands in encouraging individuals to remain healthy in body and mind during the lockdown. Delivering the global message on behalf of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, former Olympian and President of the Olympians Association Monica Böhm highlighted the importance sport played in bringing people together in peaceful
competition and the joy it brought to all participants and spectators. “Olympic Day reminds us of the unifying power of sport and an opportunity to celebrate the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship,” the message of the IOC President, Thomas Bach, reads. The event featured a 25-minute full-body workout with 50 recipients from the BAS feeding scheme programme, along
with awareness messaging promoting athlete nutrition, hygiene emphasising on hand sanitization, wearing masks and social distancing. Life skills games were also incorporated to teach recipients about mental resilience when competing in sport. Joining in the activities were Namibian elite athletes Helalia Johannes, Michelle Voster, Alexander Miller and Tristan de Lange. The Para
athlete sprinter Johannes Nambala and wheelchair athlete Roodly Gawaseb also joined in the celebrations! The NNOC President, Abner Xoagub mentioned in his closing remarks that
the celebrations has realized the significance of the role sport plays in social upliftment. “The children at the Basketball Artist School played along with Olympians who are their role models.
They seldom have the opportunity to participate in activities with their role models, and the Olympic Day celebrations indeed created the platform”.
