Dit is nadat die polisie die twee kon verbind met een van die reeks inbrake wat gedurende Januarie vanjaar by woonstelle van bejaardes op die ouetehuis se perseel plaasgevind het. Een van die slagoffers was die bejaarde mnr Hans de Jager wat op sy sterfbed in ‘n Windhoekse hospitaal verkeer het, toe daar by sy woonstel ingebreek is. Ware van nagenoeg N$100 000 is tydens

Dit is juis die inbraak by hierdie tweede slagoffer waarmee Lubbe en Levy verbind kon word. Lubbe en Levy is elk op borg van N$2000 vrygelaat en sal weer op 5 September vanjaar ‘n volgende verskyning maak.

Tourist lauds honesty of Sheet Street workers Sharlien Tjambari

Sheet Street Swakopmund have the most honest and loyal employees of them all says foreign visitor called Pam who lost her iPad in Sheet Street about a week ago. According to the Store Manager who identified herself as Lucy, two ladies came into Sheet Street on the morning of the incident and after they left she saw what seems like a diary on the counter “I decided to take the diary and to hold on to it until the owner comes back for it. A few minutes later I was tempted to open this diary to see who it belongs to so I opened it just to discover that it was a very expensive iPad. I asked my colleagues if they had seen who had left the iPad there, but nobody seems to remember anything so I told my colleagues I will hold on to it and if nobody comes back for it by the end of the day I will go to MTC to trace the owner” said the cheerful Lucy. That afternoon, just when Lucy was on her way to MTC, she met two ladies at the entrance of Sheet Street and she remembered that they have been in the shop earlier that morning and the first thing Pam said, “have you seen my iPad? I think I left it here.” Lucy told Pam that she was on her way to MTC

to trace the owner and handed her the iPad. According to Lucy, Pam was so excited to have her phone back. Pam left them a thank you card which reads as follows: P.S. As a visitor to your beautiful country, I would have been devastated by the loss of my iPad and you guys turned what could have been a disaster into a celebration of honesty, friendliness and goodwill. You are the best for sure. Dear manager and staff of Sheet Street, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you did to help me get my iPad back when I left it in your store. Your honesty, the time and the trouble you took to try and find me was very much appreciated, sincere thanks and all the best, Pam. Corruption and favouritism enemies of peace, stability and development Piquet Jacobs

President Hage Geingob inaugurated the Walvis Bay International Airport's N$100 million terminal on Friday, 22 July, commending all stakeholders for the impressive piece of infrastructure; and using the opportunity to caution the “Mr. and Mrs. 10%” accepting bribes referring to them as “enemies of peace, stability and development”. The President also cautioned against dishing out tenders to individuals and organisations not fit or qualified to do the job. The President took the opportunity to shed light on his concern about corruption regarding tenders being intrusted to “inexperienced or incompetent contractors who miss deadlines and deliver low quality infrastructure,” adding “every cent of public funds that goes into infrastructure development needs to be well spent. This means optimal procurement processes which ensure that government obtains best value for public funds. This means there is no room for procurement processes which lack fairness or cost sensitivity. Most importantly, best value for government money means there is no room for the Mr and

Mrs Ten Percents who solicit or accept bribes. We have come too far, as a country, to allow a few corrupt minded individuals to undermine the economic aspirations of an entire nation.” Also referring to corruption as cancer that requires early intervention to prevent it from spreading and turning malignant. In the same breath, the President expressed his pride in Namibia currently rated by Transparency International as the 4th most transparent African country. The Harambee Prosperity Plan aspires for us to become number one. The state of the art terminal building is part of many upgrades made to the Walvis Bay Airport, the second International

Airport in Namibia, which includes a runway valued at N$202 million and a polymer boundary fence at a cost of N$ 48 million. This fence is the first of its kind in Namibia, suitable for the weather conditions at the coast. “Namibia can now boast of having another facility which meets the international bench-marks of functional efficiency and operational safety for airports. This highlights the indisputable fact that Namibia is a nation on the march towards prosperity. A nation that is able to build world-class infrastructure is a nation on the march,” commented President Hage Geingob on the new upgrades made.

A female driver of a sedan vehicle sustained less serious injuries on Friday morning after a train hit her car in Swakopmund and dragged it about 80 metres on before coming to a standstill. The incident occurred just after 07:00 at the railway station in Mandume Ya Ndemufayo Street. “There was very thick fog, so it is assumed that the driver failed to see the train approaching. Luckily I was going very slowly,” the train driver said to namib times at the scene. Some of the eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident called on the relevant authorities to erect a boom to prevent such incidents in future.

Two trucks collide head-on Erwin Leuschner in Swakopmund Four people were injured on Saturday evening after they were involved in a head-on collision between two trucks on the temporary detour road close to the Riteway Service Station in Swakopmund. According to initial reports, the driver of a smaller truck lost control while entering Swakopmund, smashing head-on into a stationary truck which had broken down earlier that day. The broken-down truck was being guarded by a First Response security guard, who managed a lucky escape and immediately notified the relevant rescue services. The Swakopmund Fire & Rescue Services had to extricate two of the occupants entrapped in the wreckage of the smaller truck, with four occupants allegedly seated in the front at the time of the collision. The driver of the smaller truck was apparently escorted from the scene by the Swakopmund Municipal Traffic. The nature of their injuries were described as non-life-threatening. Marines reach Battalion-size Piquet Jacobs

The Naval Training School and Marine Battalion were respectively inaugurated on Friday, 22 July, at the Rooikop Military Base by Namibia's President Hage Geingob who is the Commander in Chief of the Namibian Defence Force. The establishment of a Marine Unit started in 2005, following the commissioning of the Namibian Navy in 2004. A Marine Company was to be sent to Brazil for the Marine Formation Course, but after realising that a company would not be able to sustain itself, logistically and administratively, it was decided to upgrade to a battalion, which is a larger body of troops. The order to work on the creation of a Marine Battalion was then officially given in 2008, with the help of the Brazilian Marine Training Team. Training was initiated in 2009, with the objective of training 150 men per year over the period of 5 years, therefore the Naval Training School. The foundation of the Marine Battalion has successfully been laid, featuring a Rapid Reaction Unit, an Amphibious Special Operations Unit, an Operational Boat Squadron, and Operational Diving Teams. Since its commissioning in 2004, the Navy has expanded into performing a multidimensional role of defending Namibia's maritime interests but also to assist in challenges like the war on poverty, drought and water shortages. The establishment of the Marine Corps and the Naval Training School is a crucial aspect of its increasing capabilities, as threats to national security have become varied and complex. An increasing number of these threats being non-military and non-conventional and often exceeding national borders; making collective action within joint organisations critical. Issues such as piracy, overfishing, smuggling and human trafficking continue to threaten African seas, negatively affecting the competitive trading between Africa and the rest of the world. “National and regional instabilities that have allowed scourge to fester and spread are a concern to Namibia. It is our intention to continue to participate in exercises with the navies of other littoral states of the South Atlantic, in the promotion of Maritime Security in the greater Atlantic Ocean region,” explained President Geingob during the inauguration ceremony.

Fish for Harambee Piquet Jacobs An official handover of approximately 3.1 million cans of horse mackerel destined for the Government's drought relief programme was done on Thursday afternoon by Etosha Fishing, United Fishing Enterprises and Seaflower Group of Companies as part of their aid towards the Harambee Prosperity Plan.

The gathering demonstrated the commitment towards the call by President Hage Geingob on the Harambee Prosperity Plan. Among the pillars of this plan, Pillar 3 which is “Social Progression” states, “the desired outcome with respect to hunger and poverty during the Harambee period will be: there will be zero deaths in Namibia that can be attributed to a lack of food.” The Government, through the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources allocated two horse mackerel fishing quotas towards alleviating needs of Namibians in need. Of these quotas,

10 500 metric tonnes were allocated to the Office of the Prime Minister in aid of Disaster Risk Management and a further 2 000 metric tonnes to the Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare; a total of 12 500 metric tonnes. These emergency relief quotas were specifically allocated to be processed through canning with the view on sustaining processing jobs. The worth of the generated canned fish is believed to be approximately N$21 million, which is close to 3.1 cans (256 193 trays). The Office of the Prime Minister will receive 2.1 million cans (175 082

trays) for the drought relief and The Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare will receive 973 333 cans (81 111 trays). The fish left Walvis Bay destined for Windhoek by truck on Thursday evening, with a total of 44 trucks travelling to deliver the donation. “I call upon all fishing companies to join hands with me to donate more fish, as we seek to address this emergency food security situation currently facing our country, which has been declared a national disaster by President Hage Geingob,” commented Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernard Esau.

Walvis Bay star Johanna Benson won gold in the T37 400 metre race at the London Athletics Grand Prix on Saturday. The Paralympic gold medallist ran a time of one minute, eight seconds (1.08.51 seconds) to shake off her competitors in the 400m race at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. Benson beat two competitors from Germany and France. Athletes who compete at the London event take part on invitation only and Benson was the only athlete who was invited to represent Namibia at this major event. A statement availed to Nampa on Saturday by the Namibia Paralympic Committee (NPC) said Benson gave it her all, in the process breaking her personal best time of 1.09.98 seconds. “It was a well-executed race which came with a whopping US.$ 2 000 in prize money for first place,” read the statement.

Benson was quoted in the statement as saying winning was a personal achievement for her and good motivation for her preparation for the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “It was like it was not me running in that race, I only realised it when crossing the finish line. It is not easy for me and my teammates when we are competing against the best in the world who are better funded in sport than we are, but it will always be an honour to represent Namibia, the Land of the Brave,” she said. Benson also won gold in the T37 100m at the Berlin Grand Prix in Germany recently. The annual London Athletics Grand Prix was the final grand prix before the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Brazil's Rio De Janeiro during September. (NAMPA)

Walvis Bay’s Stevens moves and shakes South African Rugby Piquet Jacobs Damian Stevens, a 21 year old Namibian scrumhalf, who represented Namibia in England at the most recent Rugby World Cup, will be seen running out for the Sharks' under-21 side as well as the senior side. This comes after he moves from Western Province to the Sharks ahead of the Nashua Currie Cup season. Stevens is a product of Walvis Bay, starting his rugby career at Walvis Bay High School, before moving to Paarl High School. The talented rugby star has featured in the Varsity Shield for the University of the Western Cape and was also part of the Western Province Currie Cup qualifying squad.
