Floris Steenkamp The environmental activism group Sea Shepherd's vessel, Ocean Warrior, was spotted only a few nautical miles off Walvis Bay in the vicinity of the Pelican Point Peninsula yesterday morning. Port control at Walvis Bay also had no knowledge of the vessel. The vessel was photographed at anchor yesterday morning and it clearly displays the name “Ocean Warrior” on her hull. The vessel was not visible on any marine identification system (a check was run by a local shipping company). A search online only showed the vessel last position as off Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and that was more than four months ago. Sea Shepherd describes itself as a “direct action” conservation society to stop illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing globally. The foundation operates a number of vessels of which Ocean Warrior is one of the latest to join the fleet. Direct action includes engaging fishing vessels at sea which are involved in underhand operations, preventing it from casting their nets and carrying out menacing manoeuvres and deploying powerful water-canons to hinder crews from carrying out their illegal and unwanted fishing activities.

The Isuzu was driven by a 40-year-old man and also had two passengers on board. All three occupants were only slightly injured. In the vehicle driven by Swartbooi there were also two passengers who only sustained slight injuries.

Oil and Gas discoveries important to fuel development in Namibia Sharlien Tjambari

Policy makers, government decision makers, private sector investors and industry experts gathered in Swakopmund this week for the 3rd Namibian International Oil and Gas Conference. One of the driving forces behind the Conference is the Namibia Minerals Corporation (Namcor). The Conference comes amidst a very robust, yet volatile international oil market which is driven by geo-political tug-of-war between member countries of the Oil Production and Exporting Countries (OPEC) and partners in the non-OPEC oil basket. Also international oil prices which at the one end are driven up by production output

cuts by OPEC, US shale oil production boots that seek to counter crude oil price rises, production losses caused by political events and war (Iran, Venezuela and Libya) and Africa's own quest to harness its oil- and gas riches to the optimum for its own people. The Conference also took place at a time when

Namibia still has no breakthrough in finding oil in its exclusive economic zone, despite eighteen ex-ploration wells sunk so far. The exploration did, however enhanced knowledge and understanding of Namibia's subsea geology and its viability to carry economic viable deposits of crude oil and gas. In his keynote address at the opening of the Conference, the Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo said more and more African countries are discovering oil and gas and that is important for the continent's economic transformation. “A conference like this is about building partnerships for transformation of Africa's oil and gas industry. These partnerships however, need to be real partnerships aimed at mutual benefits to the maximum for both parties”, said Alweendo. Alweendo further said oil and gas are the world's most important and valuable commodities and act as catalysts for development, industrialisation and government revenues needed to deliver service to the people. The Minister expressed hope for Namibia too “a major discovery is important for Namibia in these times of economic volatility”. Namibia experiences an economic slowdown and in the event of oil- and gas industries could take the country far in weathering such storms”, explained Alweendo. According to Selma Shimutwikeni, the Co-Founder and Managing Director of RichAfrica Consultancy which co-organised the Conference the potential of Africa's oil and gas sectors remain unchanged. The continent possesses an estimated 7.5 % of the world's oil and also gas resources. The key driver of the conference was to discuss how to leverage partnerships in the quest for a thriving and sustainable oil and gas industry in Africa. In particular to unlock the potential of the oil and gas value chain. The conference was a platform for increased collaboration and cooperation, a catalyst to mobilise investment, share knowledge, regulatory frameworks and maximising benefits from the entire oil and gas value chain. This conference was held by RichAfrica Consultancy in partnership with NAMCOR and with the support of the Ministry of Mines and Energy. Equally important, the conference also showcased the investment opportunities in Namibia's upstream and downstream industries.

Mondesa Clinic Vandalised Staff at Mondesa Clinic in Swakopmund work in fear, following a burglary at the Clinic's premises earlier this week and threatening messages left by the culprits to staff in the form of graffiti and a handwritten note found on one of the desks. The message states staff must respect “The President by doing their work”, leaving many with no doubts these are hidden threats stemming from members of the public’s growing discontent with service delivery levels at some clinics. Some said in the aftermath that staff at the Clinic are often threatened by members of the public for alleged poor service delivery and arrogance, and during the burglary anti-retroviral drugs were stolen. Staff discovered the graffiti on the pavement at the entrance of the Clinic and on the building’s outer walls when they arrived for work on Wednesday. They further discovered there was an actual burglary. The screening room was vandalised and a cabinet was forced open where anti-retroviral medicine was stolen. There staff also found a handwritten message this time calling for respect of the youth and for money to be made available to start businesses. When asked about security arrangements at the Clinic, staff declined to elaborate. The burglary must have taken place either on Tuesday night or Wednesday during the early morning hours they said. The Clinic opened late on Wednesday only, as staff was waiting for the Police to comb the scene for evidence and to register a case.

Creativity and Innovation Week at COSDEF Isaac Chikosi

The Creativity and Innovation Week is a global event and this year was held at COSDEF Arts and Crafts Centre in Swakopmund. The four-day workshop organised by speaker and writer Brandt von West, in collaboration with Scribing Dynamics and the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), pulled together a cast of top-notch professionals who provided a holistic workshop free of charge. Tony the Poet, Elrie Pieterse, Rowan van Dyk, Mathues Kangala and MornĂŠ Venter took turns to share with participants the core values of creativity, problem solving, effective time management and relational leadership. A story telling session facilitated by Elrie Pieterse, a professional speaker, proved invaluable for the toddlers brought in by their parents offering them a one-of-kind experience with puppets and roleplay. Free workshops indeed need to be taken advantage of as they allow individuals to broaden their horizons and network, building stronger professional relationships.

Außergewöhnliche und/oder ästhetischen Werke von insgesamt 16 Künstlern waren zu bestaunen. Bis Ende Mai (an allen Wochentagen) sind sie noch zu sehen: 20 spektakuläre Uhren und dreidimensionale Erzeugnisse von Joanna Woermann, nachdenklich stimmende Installationen von Urte Remmert sowie eine Gemeinschaftsinstallation von Elton Mugomo, Carola Lorck, Wellington Mushonga und Urte Remmert, farbenfrohe Skulpturen des Windhoekers Nico-

April, zwei Tage nachdem Eckhart Müller und Heimo Hellwig vor dem Eingang des technologischen Instituts NIMT hinterhältig erschossen wurden, erschien in der Allgemeinen Zeitung ein Kommentar der Journalistin Nina Cerezo. Sie schreibt über die Warum-Frage, mit denen neugierige Kinder ihre Umwelt bombardieren und

len wieder unsere Welt, die wir “warumlos” durchstreifen können.” Ja, klar gibt es die ewig oberflächlichen Hedonisten, die neben Geld und Sex auch Jagd auf Neuigkeiten der Neuigkeiten willen machen, diese Schattengestalten, die ständig neue Impulse brauchen und deren “Neugierde” Selbstzweck geworden ist. Aber hey, jeder, der einen gesunden Menschen-

erforschen. Ihrer Meinung nach verlieren wir als Erwachsene diese Eigenschaft der Wissbegierde (denn was ist Neugierde anderes als der Drang oder die Begierde, etwas Neues zu verstehen und zu erfassen?). Die AZMitarbeiterin nimmt an, dass wir erst durch Schocktherapie wieder inquisitiv und wissenshungrig werden. Sie beschreibt die Reaktionen und Aktionen von Menschen nach Schicksalsschlägen generell und aktuellen Katastrophen wie der Zerstörung der 856 Jahre alten, römischkatholische Kirche Notre-Dame de Paris, dem Selbstmord eines Angestellten unseres Präsidenten und dem Attentat auf zwei Manager von NIMT wie folgt: “Fast süchtig wühlen wir in Indizien, halten uns an Bruchteilen fest, wollen das Puzzle augenblicklich zusammensetzen..wol-

verstand und ein wenig Tiefe hat, wird sich doch die natürlichste Frage der Menschheit stellen: “WARUM? Wieso hat/haben der/ die Mörder so etwas getan? Was ist in ihm/ ihnen vorgegangen? Wie ticken diese Lebewesen?” Nicht etwa, wie Nina Cerezo meint, weil wir unsere schmerzfreie Welt suchen, sondern weil wir tatsächlich wissen wollen, wer sich in unserer Mitte befindet. Ich kann mich also mit dieser Gruppe Menschen, die die AZJournalistin in Worte fasst und deren nichtige Sucht nach Nervenkitzel-Information, die genauso schnell wieder vergessen ist wie eine Smartphone-Wischbewegung aussieht, in keiner Weise identifizieren. Auch konnte ich an niemanden in meinem Bekanntenkreis denken, der tatsächlich nur deshalb einem Meuchel- und/ oder Selbstmord auf den Grund gehen will, “um den schmerzenden Schock nicht ertragen zu müssen” oder gar die WarumFrage nicht ertragen können” (so Nina Cerezo). Meiner Meinung nach sind nicht nur Kinder, sondern auch wir Erwachsenen faustisch veranlagt und versuchen “zu verstehen, was die Welt - und uns selbst - im Innersten zusammenhält” (aus Goethes Faust). Und ich wage zu behaup-

ten, dass sehr, sehr viele Namibier und auch Namibiafreunde sich erbarmungslos und immer wieder und wieder fragen: “Warum hat man zwei produktive Mitglieder unserer Gemeinschaft so

heimtückisch aus dem Weg geräumt? Warum, warum???” Und diese lebensnotwendige Frage stellen wir uns nicht etwa, um unsere heile Welt so schnell wie möglich zurückzuerobern (die gibt es eh nicht) oder aber der Pein nicht zu begegnen (die muss man eh durchleben), sondern weil wir tatsächlich verstehen wollen, was in den Köpfen von Mördern, Selbstmördern, Vergewaltigern, Brandstiftern und all jeden angeht, die sich außerhalb dessen bewegen, was wir nicht unbedingt gerade eine gesunde Gesellschaftsnorm nennen würden. Erstaunlicherweise hat die Neu- und Wissbegierde noch heute einen anrüchigen Ruf. Neugierige Menschen werden als Schnüffler gesehen, die geifern, süchteln und lechzen. Ich denke, dass mag seinen Ursprung darin haben, dass die Katholische Kirche lange Zeit die Philosophie prägte und Neugierde jahrhundertelang als Sünde angesehen wurde. Dabei sind Neugierde und Wissensdurst doch eigentlich nur eine äußerst menschliche und einleuchtende Sehnsucht, den Dingen auf den Grund zu gehen, zu versuchen zu verstehen... Ihre Susann Kinghorn

Omaruru Cycle Race The 18th Omaruru Spar Cycling Challenge will take place tomorrow Saturday, 27 April in Omaruru.

As is customary, the race is slated for the town of Omaruru this weekend and according to chief organiser of the event Berthold Karumendu, a much bigger and better event is expected. Usually attracting more than 300 participants, Karumendu expects nothing less this year and also announced yesterday that principal sponsor Omaruru Spar is this year again on board with a N$45 000 sponsorship and co-sponsor FNB sponsored N$20 000, while Coca Cola remains the official drink sponsor and also gave an additional N$6 000. This year we will have 25km fun ride for beginners and social riders, a 60km race and a 106km race for the elite riders,” he said. The elite race will start at 08h00 on Saturday, followed by the fun ride at 08h15 and the 60km race at 08h30. The prize money in the elite, veteran and masters categories for men and women is N$3 000, N$2 000 and N$1 000 for the first three places, while the first three cyclists in the 60km race will receive N$750, N$500 and N$250 respectively. Francois Lotter of Spar Namibia said it is an honour to sponsor the race and to support this race for the past 18 years. It has become very successful and we are very proud of that. “We are looking forward to Saturday's event and even if you are a Marelize on the bike, please join us - it will be a fun day for the whole family,” Lotter said. The race organiser Bethold Karumendu thanked the main sponsor, Omaruru Spar who have contributed N$45 000, as well as FNB Omaruru who contributed N$20 000, and Coca-Cola who sponsored N$6 000 and the soft drinks.

West Coast Challenge Second Gravel and Dirt Series West Coast MTB Challenge was held over the Easter weekend at the Moonlight Resort in Swakopmund. The normal coastal mists were absent that morning, leaving a clear path for the riders as they looked ahead at what was to be a day when records were to be broken. 327 hands reached to the skies to give the Hollard Thumbs up, a tradition that has grown over the last 3 years before the start of each race. The countdown started, the last inhale, and it began. From the beginning, it was clear that this was going to be exhilarating, as the leading pack for the 75km race set a staggering pace from the get-go. The West Coast MTB Challenge is exactly that, a challenge that will test more than just your physical limitations, it will also require every bit of skill you have as you take on the sand, single tracks and the lightning-quick reflexes required through narrow rock paths and corners. As the dust settles, we look back and wish to congratulate each and every rider who took on the course, it takes more than just pure grit determination to ride in an event such as the West Coast MTB Challenge, it takes heart, resolve and undying passion for a sport that has taken Namibia by storm over the last couple of years. Drikus Coetzee was the first rider in the elite men's category in a time of 2:32:21, while Xavier Papo came second in 2:34:58, and Danzel de Koe third in 2:36:26. Michelle Vorster dominated the elite women's category, winning in a time of 2:43:35, with Jolynde Aucamp a distant second in 3:21:53 and Marion Schonecke third in 3:23:34. Clinton Hilfiker won the veteran men's category in 2:36:38, followed by Jaco Lamprecht (2:47:47) and Ian Grassouw (2:47:59), while Nick du Plessis won the masters men's category in 2:55:06, followed by Stefan Bohlke (2:58:31) and Alfons Kiesewetter (3:01:47). Peter Sander won the grand master men's category in 3:31:11, followed by Bernhard Volkmann (3:46:33) and Tony Bassingthwaighte (4:04:19). Jeanne Heunis won the sub veteran women's category in 3:01:47, followed by Courtney Liebenberg (3:13:44) and Silke Bean (3:22:50), while Irene Steyn won the veteran women's category in 3:07:51, followed by Johanita de Waal (3:13:45) and Elanor Grassow (3:13:47). The event saw a fine turnout of 327 riders competing in the various categories over 20km, 35km and 75km.

JCCA National T20 champs Rudi Bowe

The Junior Cricket Academy (JCCA) won the Cricket T20 national T20 title with a comprehensive 88 run victory over Sparta in the final of the mini tournament at the Sparta oval in Walvis Bay. JCCA bat first and scored a competitive 197/5 that made it very difficult for Sparta to chase down the target as they were all out for 109 with two over to spare. The national T20 championships were played in the format of a mini tournament between Sparta and JCCA from Walvis Bay and Wanderers and Green Mambas from Windhoek. On Saturday JCCA beat both Wanderers, Green Mambas and Sparta to secure their position on top of the log. Sparta lost against Wanderers but beat Green Mambas to end second with Wanderers third after losing to Green Mambas that end the mini tournament in the four position. The third and four place between Wanderers and Green Mambas were not played as both time decided not to play.

Erongo under 20 Netball champs Sharlien Tjambari

The Erongo Region's under 20 Netball team was crowned champions of the 19th edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup as they dispatched pre-tournament favourites Khomas Region 45-28 in the final held in Mariental over the Easter weekend. The Governor of Erongo Region Cleophas Mutjavikua who witnessed the final said it was a spectaculargame. Speaking to the under 20 Netball team at his office this week Tuesday as they presented him with the Trophy. On behalf of the Office of the Governor, Mutjavikua pledge N$20 000 to the netball team and said that his office willraise another N$20 000 to be distributed among the players and coaches played a huge role in bringing the trophy home. Mutjavikua said “We hope that next year you will do exactly the same in Oshana region and so will the soccer team”. The Secretary General of Erongo Regional Netball Association Foxy Afrikaner said “We want to grow the netball industry as there is a lot of potential, but we are lacking support from the business community, our netball facilities need to be upgraded and we do not have proper training equipment”. “Bringing this trophy home proved that we are serious about netball and want to take Netball in the region to the next level” Afrikaner added. Afrikaner further said that Erongo regional under 20 netball team is not just for girls at the coast, but for all the girls in the region. The association are prepared to go as far as Uis, Otjimbingwe, Omatjete and Omoruru in their surge for potential. She urge all under 20 girls in the region to follow in the footsteps of this girls and start taking netball

Witbeen added that the Association is stuckeling financially and that the winnings are just a drop in the bucket. Therefore the Associations appeal to the Erongo regions business community to assist with the development of Netball in the region. Kanguu Musambani who was one of the coaches for the girls said the only thing that made the team strong and successful was the fact that they were very much disciplined and the team spirit was very good. Musambani thanked Mutjavikua and his office for their support and even though there were a few setbacks with training facilities and equipment they managed to work what they had and the trophy is living proof. Rachel Roets, Raukencia Ndakalako and Cornelia Mupenda received player of the match awards in matches leading up to the final. Roets received the award for best goal shooter of the tournament. The girls did not lost a game on their way to the final as they beat Ohangwena 27-7, Khomas 21-11, Omusati 29-10, Hardap 23-16, Otjozondjupa 19-14, and Oshana 22-6 they beat Kunen 49-18 in the semifinal and Khomas again in the final 45-28.

Rachel Roets received the award for best goal shooter of the tournament.
