“In a statement released yesterday aftern o o n t h e M VA F states: August marks an exciting time for Namibians as family and friends get together in celebration of the many festivities lined up during this month. Of prominence is the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair and the Olufuko Cultural Festival which are taking place in the Northern part of Namibia, as well as the commemoration of Heroes Day on 26 August, which will be celebrated at Walvis Bay. These festivities also fall in the school holidays adding to the high number of road travelers. As a result, the coming weekend will see an influx of travelers mainly towards North, West and other parts of Namibia, culminating in high traffic flow and increasing the risk of road crashes during this period. The consequence of such celebrations and gatherings are likely to result in more drivers driving under the influence of alcohol too. The two chairpersons of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund’s branches of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) held a meeting recently where they declared the end to an existence of isolation in relation to one another, with coastal businesses and in relation to smaller chambers in the Erongo Region.
2015 indicate that 12 precious lives were lost in 94 crashes with resultant injuries of 193 persons. The rising spate of road crashes across the country coupled with mass casualty crashes which predominantly took place during June 2016, steered the Minister of Transport and Works, Hon Alpheus !Naruseb to call upon all road safety partners to come up with sustainable initiatives to redress the escalating number of road crashes on Namibian roads. In response to the Minister's call, the MVA Fund in conjunction with law enforcement agencies including NamPol, Roads Authority, Local Authority Traffic units and other partners such as National Road Safety Council (NRSC) launched the 'Opotuli' road safety campaign on 24 June. The campaign, which is partly sponsored by the Self-Regulatory Alcohol Industry Forum (SAIF) and Private Sector Safety Forum (PSRSF), is currently in full swing and is expected to run until the end of January 2017 and will be stretched to all 14 regions across the country.
With the focus of doing random breath testing for alcohol consumption and vehicle fitness, the main aim of Opotuli is to encourage road users to change their mindset while using the roads. Even though Namibia was rated as the top African country with the best road infrastructures by the World Economic Forum in their Global Competitive Report of 2014/15, it is evident that good infrastructure alone is clearly not sufficient to save our people from succumbing on the country's roads, and only significant behavioural change among road users can make the road safer to everyone. Because most road crashes are the product of several factors such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and due to negligence or reckless driving, the probability of crashes happening can be reduced in different ways if every road user pledges to be a responsible and safe road user this long weekend. The chairperson of the NCCI Walvis Bay, Mr. Johnny Doeseb, appealed for greater cooperation between local businesses and the NCCI Walvis Bay and confirmed a number of projects are soon to commence for a comprehensive membership drive. Doeseb said the NCCI Walvis Bay by virtue of its mandate has much to offer to local businesses, irrespective of size or the type of business activities pursued. Doeseb also pledged to increase the NCCI Walvis Bay’s visibility in the public domain and held specific talks with namib times as the only local newspaper at the coast to assist in this endeavour. The chairperson of the NCCI Swakopmund, Mr. Paul Njambula, in the meeting urged both the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay chambers to add their weight to smaller business chambers in Erongo, in order to also strengthen these entities and thereby contribute to overall economic development of communities across Erongo. Both Doeseb and Njambula are new blood to the coastal chambers, having been elected in the chair recently. Both Doeseb and Ndjambula firmly belief in growing NCCI membership and assist with business related information and services.

Shalom Park still for sale despite Kobi Alexander extradition to United States Kobi Alexander, a former CEO of a technologies firm Comverse, who for more than a decade has been fighting his extradition from Namibia to the United States to stand trial for stock option fraud, has volunteered to be extradited to face charges. Alexander has been handed to agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) at the Hosea Kutako International Airport on Tuesday and was flown to the United States where he reportedly made a first appearance in a New York court yesterday afternoon (Namibian time). Alexander is no unfamiliar personality at the coast and is the owner of the Shalom Park housing development in Walvis Bay. Alexander also funds a school feeding project at the Immanuel Ruiters Primary School in Kuisebmond for 200 children daily and is a regular guest at the Burning Shore Protea at Langstrand. Close project associates of Alexander said this week his extradition to the United States and unknown future he faces to return to Namibia will not influence his local feeding project and the Shalom development is still up for sale.

Desert Explorers to cough up for free use of land Erwin Leuschner
The popular Swakopmund quadbike tour operator Desert Explorers will in future pay a rental amount for a large piece of land the company is utilising as a parking area for its customers. Town Council decided this during the recent meeting after it came to light that Desert Explorers is utilizing an area for this purpose much larger than was initially thought. For many years Desert Explorers on the southern border of the town is utilising a large area to offer quadbike tours into the dune belt across the Swakop River. The tours are especially popular with tourists. Currently the company is leasing two portions of land for its operations. According to the Agenda of the meeting the company is leasing erf 1058 from Government for its operations while at the same time is also utilizing erf 1318, which the company is leasing from Town Council. During a meeting of the Swakopmund Planning Forum it was determined that Desert Explorers is utilizing an area measuring 247 m² of erf 1318 for purposes of parking – free of charge. After the meeting Council decided to extend the lease agreement for this area as well as another small portion until the end of August 2018. During another meeting of the Planning Forum in May 2016 it transpired that “the actual size of the area used by them on erf 1318 measures 5 443 m² instead of 247 m².” The large portion Desert Explorers utilises for parking of over-land trucks, busses, light passenger and other vehicles; parking for staff;
a track for kids quadbike rides and for camel rides. In the Agenda it further states that currently Council's standard rental tariff for parking areas amounts to N$15.73 per square metre. In this case Desert Explorers would be forced to fork out a monthly amount of N$98 461.15, which is described as “an unreasonable high rental which will have a detrimental effect on the business venture, considering the fluctuation of prices, monthly overheads of the business etc.” Because of the above, Council appointed a valuer who argues that the larger the portion of land the lower the rental amount per square metre should be. It was therefore proposed that a rental amount for the area measuring 5 443 m² to be N$1.50 per square metre. At the recent meeting Council approved this monthly rental amount being N$9 389.18. It was further determined that Desert Explorer's rental fee for the parking area be levied back-dated from 1 September 2015. Additionally a deposit equal to one month's rental be levied as well as “any additional conditions Council deems fit.”

Thomas Florin can only apply for parole in 2024
Picture: Floris Steenkamp (1999) The Judiciary of Namibia pointed out this week that Thomas Adolf Florin would not be eligible to apply for parole at the National Release Board within the next 90 days as the media reported this week, including an article in this regard that appeared in the edition of namib times of Tuesday 23 August 2016. When Florin was convicted on 22 December 1999, an Independent Namibia’s first Prisons Act (1998) was still in force which would have allowed him to apply for parole. However, on 1 January 2014 the new Prisons Act for Namibia came into force which determines that a person convicted on a life sentence must serve a prison sentence of a minimum of 25 years before eligible for parole. In the case of Florin this would mean he would only be eligible to apply for parole by December 2024, a judicial officer pointed out this week. The namib times as a Namibian entity with a deep respect for Namibia’s legal system and the integrity of the Courts of this country hereby apologises unconditionally for this oversight and the subsequent incorrect information we published in the public domain as a result. ·Florin, now in the latter half of his forties, was found guilty on 3 December 1999 of the murder of his wife, Monika Florin, in the couple's home. Florin never admitted to the killing, but was convicted on 22 December of the same year on evidence presented by the State. Monika Florin was killed by a single blow to the head by a blunt object [a hammer] whereafter Thomas Florin first mutilated her mortal remains and cooked it before hiding some of the grisly evidence in containers in the house's ceiling. Florin was found guilty of murder, mutilation of a dead human body and obstructing the course of justice. He was sentenced to serve a minimum of fifteen years and was transferred to the Windhoek Central Prison to serve the sentence. This sentence includes a six month sentence for wildlife products which was found to be illegally in his possession when the Florin couple's freight containers, in which their household was packed for an imminent move to Germany, was opened by the police in Walvis Bay. The police had a suspicion that Thomas Florin's explanation that his wife absconded, was not true and arrested him for the illegal possession of the wildlife products found in the containers. Florin was still in custody when his wife's remains were discovered.

The Warning Signs of Drunk Driving In the spirit of Heroes Day, Namibians have much to celebrate and appreciate; but as most celebrations are accompanied with alcohol, it creates the risk of drivers getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. Driving while under the influence of alcohol is not only very dangerous, but could lead to fatal consequences. Regardless, many continue to get behind the wheel after having a few too many. Making this choice can put the lives of both the driver and passengers in grave danger, as well as motorists sharing the road. Nothing can fully prevent drivers from being exposed to the risks posed by intoxicated motorists on the road, but by being able to recognize the warning signs of drunk driving, it may at least be possible for other drivers to attempt to steer clear of these drivers. Therefore, it is important that all individuals be attentive to some of the most common drunk driving warning signs. The following is a brief list of some of the most common warning signs associated with drunk driving: o o o o o o o

Warning on ZERO TOLERANCE on roads this weekend Piquet Jacobs A zero tolerance policy will be implemented by traffic officials over the weekend whilst patrolling and making use of roadblocks, with a specific eye on drunk drivers, speeding, drivers talking on cellphones and drivers not wearing seatbelts. Extensive operation plans have been put together by national and regional traffic departments in anticipation of the expected traffic influx at the coast, due to Heroes Day celebrations and the Henties Bay Fish Festival, in an attempt to keep motorists safe and the roads accident free. An extra 10 traffic officials and their vehicles from different regions have been supplemented to the coast to assist in these plans. Roadblocks will be set up and patrolling will be done in and around town; focus will also be put on the main road leading to the coastal towns. Visitors and local motorists are strongly advised by senior traffic officials to drive with caution, as no leniency will be awarded to anyone found disregarding traffic rules and regulations. “We are focusing on drunk driving and speeding especially, as well as reckless driving and unroadworthy vehicles. Drivers caught breaking any of many traffic laws should be ready to feel the long arm of the law”, commented Chiel Inspector Daniel Lange, Erongo Regional Commanding Officer of Nampol Traffic Unit. Walvis Bay's Municipal Traffic Chief, Eben Platt, asks drivers from other regions travelling to the coast to be patient on the roads and for heavy vehicles to make use of the road behind the dunes. “We want the public to take note that we are going to be very strict, this is for their own safety; we DO NOT want any fatalities and if drivers adhere to the rules of the road we hopefully will not have any. We are expecting a lot of visitors at the coast, with Heroes Day being commemorated here and the Fish Festival being held in Henties Bay. The roads will be congested and we are very much aware of how impatient drivers become when they are in a hurry, but we don't want anyone taking chances – it is too dangerous,” Platt added. A warning is also put out to those travelling and leaving their homes, to have their houses locked up and preferably have someone trustworthy keep an eye on the property.

Kavango East region are the 2016 Debating Champions Sharlien Tjambari
On Saturday evening the Swakopmund community witnessed the final debate between Omusati region and Kavango East region, the only two regions which made it through to the finals. The finals and award ceremony took place at Coastal High School in Mondesa, Swakopmund.

The motion discussed during the finals was “should the speed limits be removed or not?.” The team from Kavango East region was in favour of the motion and said speed limits should be removed so that the drivers can drive freely and arrive at their destinations on time. The team also pointed out that speed limits only contribute 5% to road accidents. The team from Omusati region was against the motion and said speed limits should not be removed and claimed that speed limits are the only thing preventing a lot of road accidents and should speed limits be removed it will cause danger to wildlife and to children and school children on the streets, because road users will be driving as they please. Strong points were raised during the debate and in the end the team from Kavango East region won the debate and walked away as champions. The Governor of Erongo region Mr Cleophas Mutjavikua, said debating creates a platform for learners across to showcase their debating skills by competing with their peers from all 14 regions. Mutjavikua highlighted the importance of taking part in debating at school level. He said that high school debating mostly focuses on issues affecting our society in a competitive but respectful manner, “helping to prepare our learners to become ideal Namibian adults. This debate is so important that it brought together our learners from all 14 regions, once again emphasizing the notion of one Namibia one Nation”. Mutjavikua also said debates force learners to solve problems and look at issues from a different perspective. Debate creates opportunities for learners to be creative and to deliver their thoughts in persuasive manners. The governor further said that debaters become better readers and are better informed than their peers and debate teaches learners moral values. Learners who will represent Namibia at the World Debating Championships 2017 are as follows: Paulina Kamati from Oshikoto region, Sinyepe Mannmen from Kavango East region, Isascar Tjandero from Karas region, Estera Shitana from Erongo region, Thelma Mackinza from Khomas region, Rabonzy Uxams from Kunene and Martha Shaduka from Erongo region. Paulina Kamati was the best female debater while Sinyepe Mann-men received the best male award. They each received N$1 000 in cash, a certificate and a trophy sponsored by Langer Heirich Uranium (LHU). Erongo region came in the third place and received N$3 500 from the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) fund and N$1 500 from LHU, Omusati came second and received N$2 000 from LHU and N$5 000 from MVA fund. Kavango East region walked away with N$12 500 in total, N$5 500 from LHU and N$7 000 from MVA fund, a winning trophy and certificates. MVA Fund was the main sponsor of the event with a total contribution of N$100 000, B2 Gold with N$53 000 and LHU contributed N$20 000.

Drain blockage and burst – Swakopmunders' nightmares Sharlien Tjambari
Drain water on the corner of Strand and Moses Garoeb Street Vineta, Swakopmund These photos taken last week Thursday shows sewerage water on the corner of Strand and Moses Garoeb Street in Vineta, Swakopmund. According to residents living in that area, the street is always under sewerage water and this happens frequently. Another resident who shows greater concern was a doctor whose home is on Strand Street. She said the drain explodes almost every week and sometimes two of three times a week. “The sewerage water coming from the drain pipes is not clean and brings a very bad smell
and sometimes it brings excreta which have a very bad smell. The municipality always pump the water, but this does not prevent another blockage” said the doctor. According to her the sewerage water on the street of the town is a health hazard and the problem should be solved
and taken in consideration as soon as possible. namib times received a call about the blockage on Wednesday 17 August afternoon, but by the time namib times got to Strand street, the water was already pumped up. On Thursday 18 August namib times received the same call again, this time the sewerage water was flowing on the street coming from the front yard of a resident on Moses Garoeb Street and from a drain which is situated in the middle of the road near the traffic circle. Strand Street is not the only street in Swakopmund with this problem. Other streets which frequently report drain explodes are Mc Hugh in town, Ochs Street in Tamariskia, Vrede Rede Street and Independence Avenue near Woerman Brock Mondesa. During the recent interview with the Swakopmund Municipality's Spokesperson Ms Ailie Gebhardt about the causes of drain blockage and drain explodes, Gebhardt said household items are the major cause of drain explosions because the items pumped up in most cases are spoons, knives and forks. Gebhardt said she believes that the only way to avoid drainage blockage and bursts is if people are educated on what should and should not be thrown in the drains. It seems like there is nothing much the municipality can do other than pumping up the sewerage water the time the problem occurs.

Baby/Toddler/Teen Seminar Once again the yearly Old Mutual Baby/Toddler seminar is at hand. This year we are also including the seminar for Primary and Secondary parents. During the Baby/Toddler seminar we will be making use of different expert speakers in 4 different halls. The attendants can decide which topic they want to attend. There will be several interesting exhibitions while snacks, tea and coffee will be provided. The goody bags will again be full of surprises and a special edition magazine containing all the speaker notes as articles as well as everything mommies would like to look for, for instance parties and schools listings! Our main speaker for both of the seminars is Anne Cawood from South Africa. She is a registered social worker with many years' experience. She worked at the Parent Centre for several years. Trained to run Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) she's been involved in developing and presenting workshops on a host of parenting related topics, from Adjustment to Parenthood, to Discipline at Home and in the Classroom, Step-parenting and The Effects of Divorce on Children. Anne is a popular speaker and is often invited to do presentations at schools, parenting workshops and on radio shows. She is also frequently approached by Attorneys and the Office of the Family Advocate to undertake forensic/legal work in matters of divorce, custody and assessments. She has written many parenting related articles for the print media, and presented lectures and workshops at the UCT Summer and Winter Schools. She was nominated for the “Woman of the Year” Award in 2010. Anne has published 5 Parenting books through Metz Press, in 4 different languages – English, Afrikaans, Italian and French and her books are available in most countries. A Nannie course will be held in one of the halls. It is an excellent opportunity to have your nannies trained and also for the “assistants” in the classes of the Pre-primary. Many backlogs can be avoided if a child is allowed to play and explore. The participators will receive a certificate. EMed Rescue will address CPR for babies, choking, fever and burns. Many parents experience that their children are picky eaters. Celia Leibbrandt has the answer for parents with this problem. She has worked as a dietician for 16 years of which 15 years has been in the field of Paediatrics. She studied Dietetics at the University of Stellenbosch and the left SA to further her career in Clinical Dietetics. She has a keen interest in working with children with nutrition-related conditions and her experience also includes working as part of a multidisciplinary feeding team for children with Selective Eating Disorders. We are excited about Dr Gerald Morkel's talk on when we should treat a sick child or not. He is also going to explain the growing up milestones of the child and when there seems to be red flags and how to treat it. Dr Morkel is a Paediatrician from the College of Medicine South Africa and Stellenbosch University. He published a research article “Bloodstream infections and antimicrobial resistance patterns in a South African neonatal intensive care unit”. As a general paediatrician he enjoys and has a special interest in haematology, allergies and neonatology. Dr Marlize Calitz is in Private Practice and is presently focussing on courses and treatment of learning and developmental difficulties and development and stress coping skills with adults and teenagers. She will give parents the know-how of how to get their children's mind/body/machine ready to learn. Samantha du Toit is a Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Consultant based in Windhoek. She has been in private practice since 2007 and consults a variety of clients and patients from young to old. In her talk she will be focusing on the importance of nutrition in the first thousand days of life, from conception until the age of two years. Birgit Mayer will speak about breastfeeding is best and every single drop of breast milk is a timeless gift to your baby. She will also explain to mothers the birthing process and Cacearia/Normal delivery. Brendan Ihmig will speak to the parents of the Teen and Primary group about how social media is defining generations – who they are and who they will become. With the harmful effects and disadvantages of social networking being part of our lives, Brendan will give parents tools how to handle it correctly. A school for gifted and talented children On 5 June 2015 Edison House School opened its doors to the public – making it the first school in the country to focus on gifted and talented children. “Internationally it has become a new priority to offer support for gifted children. Whether they be academically gifted or are talented in other areas such as music or sport,� according to Louise Oosthuizen, principal and co-founder of Edison House. The school offers these children the support they need to pursue their distinctive talents. This is possible through the intimate teaching atmosphere it provides for its pupils. Each primary class has its own teacher and teaching assistant to ensure no child is left behind during lessons. It is a disappointing reality that the majority of gifted and talented children are underachievers and many children with great potential, therefore, are labelled as 'average' students in mainstream schools. More disconcertingly, many are considered troublesome or 'difficult' given the characteristics of gifted and talented children. Where a student is identified as having an academic gift, there is a widely held assumption that they will succeed no matter what the circumstances. This is a myth: early identification of the gifted and talented student is essential to prevent later underachievement. Gifted and talented children come from all socioeconomic backgrounds and different levels of physical ability. Due to these issues and other factors, they may underachieve and may not be seen as individuals with unique intellectual, social and emotional needs. Edison House teaches according to the new National Curriculum of England, which has been a huge success since its implementation. It puts a stronger emphasis on skills such as essay-writing, problem-solving, mathematical modelling and computer programming. Due to the fact that Edison House follows the National Curriculum of England, children are also expected to start their formal schooling a year early. Children start Year 1 in the year that they turn
six. Children starting Year R - the year the child turns five - will be thoroughly prepared for Year 1. During their reception year they will be taught how to read according to the Floppy's Phonics Reading System, write and will be introduced to basic mathematics. The school further boasts an all-inclusive fee which covers all stationery and learning materials used by the pupils and various extra-mural activities such as swimming, cooking, craft, chess and gardening. Regular trips to the local library encourage pupils to read. Currently the school offers Year R up to Year 9.

Swakopmund (sk) Meine Nachbarin Traudel Goethje machte mich darauf aufmerksam, dass mir ein Fehler in der namib times Ausgabe vom 13. August unterlaufen sei. Das Geschäft v. Tippelskirch & Co. besteht nicht seit 1908, sondern sogar schon seit 1896, und ihr Großvater Theodor Glatz war der erste Geschäftsführer. Sie machte mich auch auf die Seiten 110/111 in Hulda Rautenbergs historischem Kleinod ,,Das alte Swakopmund 1892 - 1919” aufmerksam, das 1967 zum 75sten Geburtstag
erlangte weltweiten Ruf. Als Horst von Tippelskirch & Co. das Haus in Swakopmund gründete, zog er zu Ochsenwagen über Otjimbingwe ins Land, um Anregungen für zweckentsprechende Ausrüstungsartikel zu sammeln (Er bereiste sämtliche deutsche Kolonien.) Erster Geschäftsführer in Swakopmund wurde Theodor Glatz aus Schlesien, der schon von 1889 bis 1894 mit der Privattruppe François’ in Südwest gewesen und auf Grund seiner Landes-kenntnisse bei v. Tippels-

Liebe Küstenleser! Was sehen Sie, wenn Sie einen Menschen beobachten? Die stechend blauen Augen? Den gesunden Haarschopf? Die beneidenswert schlanke oder nicht vorhandene Taille der Frau bzw. den muskulösen oder bierbäuchigen Körper des Mannes? Der Blick hormonlastiger Männer fällt wohl zuerst auf Busen und/ oder Po der Frau; junge Frauen sehen eventuell den starken Wuchs und das sympathische Gesicht des Mannes...ich weiss es nicht. Ich kann es deshalb nicht mit Gewissheit sagen, weil mein Blick sich meist automatisch auf die Hände richtet. Liebe Leser, welch interessante Vielfalt an Proportionen von Fingern und Handfläche entdeckt man da. Es gibt Menschen, die benennen die Handtypen nach vier Elementen: Feuerhand (lange Handfläche, kurze Finger ), Lufthand (quadratische Handfläche, lange Finger), Wasserhand (langer Handteller, lange Finger) und Erdhand (quadratisch mit kurzen Fingern). Das ist mir zu simplistisch für das faszinierende Potpourri an Handformationen. Und was man damit alles machen kann! Hände sind doch so gut wie ständig im Einsatz, ob bei der Arbeit, beim Gestikulieren, beim Essen usw. Allein die Gestik eines Menschen hat so viel Ausagekraft. Mit unseren Händen können wir ganze Geschichten erzählen, ohne einmal den Mund zu öffnen. Wenn ich es mir überlege, hat unsere Kommunikation eigentlich sogar mit unseren Armfortsätzen begonnen, vom ersten Babygeschrei einmal abgesehen. Eine der ersten präzisen Gesten, die unsere Hand in unserem Leben formt, ist doch das "da, da" – die Zeigegeste. Schon im Säuglingsalter strecken Kleinkinder die Hände aus oder zeigen auf einen Gegenstand, der ihr Interesse geweckt hat. Artikulieren können wir das erst viel später. Mit den Händen können wir streicheln und Trost spenden, aber auch sehr viel Böses tun. Eine einzige mit der Hand verübte Ver-
tragsunterzeichnung kann einen Krieg entfachen. Finger und Daumen sind dazu fähig, sich um einen Hals zu legen und ein Leben auszulöschen. Und dann gibt es natürlich den ,,digitus impudicus”, den ,,unverschämten Finger” heute würde man vom Stinkefinger reden. Schon im antiken
Griechenland galt er als Schmähgeste, aber auch als eine verhöhnende Anspielung auf Analverkehr zwischen Männern als auch als Phallussymbol. Der ausgetreckte Mittelfinger symbolisiert den erigierten Penis, die übrigen gekrümmten Finger den Hoden. Bis heute ist die Bedeutung einer provokativen Entladung dieses Handzeichens geblieben. Man ist einfach sauer, wenn man den Mittelfinger zeigt! Gesten mit unseren feinen Händen sind ein erprobtes Mittel sich zu verständigen, vor allem in Ländern, deren Sprache man nicht spricht. Aber Vorsicht! Von Kulturraum zu Kulturraum haben manche Handzeichen unterschiedliche Bedeutungen. Mit einem nach oben gestreckten Daumen können Sie beispielsweise in Europa, Nordund Südamerika ganz problemlos zeigen: "Alles super!". In weiten Teilen der islamisch geprägten Welt ist bei diesem Zeichen nicht "alles gut." Dort kommt es unserem Stinkefinger gleich. Auch das Zeichen für "alles ok", wenn Daumen und Zeigefinger ein O formen, bedeutet selbst in Europa nicht überall das Gleiche. In Frankreich heißt es so viel wie wertlos. Besonders in südeuropäischen Ländern, wie Italien und Spanien, aber auch in Osteuropa gilt dieses
Zeichen als Beleidigung - als Sinnbild für den Anus oder als Anspielung auf das weibliche Genital. Wie dem auch ist, ich bin jedenfalls faszi-
niert von Händen, weil sie wie das ,,Aushängeschild” einer Persönlichkeit sind, bzw. weil sie unsagbar viel enthüllen, ohne dass derjenige, dem sie gehören, sich notwendigerweise darüber im Klaren ist. Schauen Sie sich mal eine geballte Faust an, in der so viel Aggression und Spannung liegt. Oder achten Sie auf Menschen, die ihre Hände in verschränkten Armen , in den Hosen- oder Jackentaschen zu stecken haben. Wegen der Kälte? Weil sie eventuell etwas zu verstecken haben oder einfach nur einen inaktiven Zustand an den Tag legen? Dann gibt es diejenigen, die ihre Arme ausbreiten und andere mit offenen, einladenden Händen willkommen heißen. Hände können töten, lieben, zuschlagen und heilen. Sie verraten oft mehr über uns, als wir preisgeben wollen. Sie machen Teil unserer Körpersprache aus, die meist ehrlicher ist, als das, was wir aussprechen. Ich mache mir nur Sorgen darüber, dass das ständige Tippen auf dem Handy oder der PC-Maus unsere ausdrucksstarken Hände verkümmern lässt. Schließlich sind sie doch zu soooo viel mehr gedacht. Das jedenfalls meint Ihre Susann Kinghorn

This milestone represents yet another successful addition of vehicles built from the world-class Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) plant, based in Chennai. The FUSO FJ 16-230 is testament of FUSO Trucks' continuous growth offensive in southern Africa. These include South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Lesotho and Swaziland, following the opening of the Regional Centre Southern Africa earlier in the year. With the addition of the robust FUSO FJ 16-230, the manufacturer is poised to unlock the full potential of southern Africa. To ensure this, the FJ 16-230 offers a wide choice for various applications such as distribution, rentals, courier and Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises. "The FUSO FJ 16-230 was expertly built not only to be able to handle tough operating conditions experienced in southern Africa, but also to be ergonomic, fuel-efficient and custom-tailored to meet the ever-demanding expectations of our customers," said Naeem Hassim, Head of FUSO Trucks Southern Africa. "Like with all the rest of the commercial vehicles produced at DICV plant in Chennai, the FUSO FJ underwent rigorous testing and was assessed under the most strenuous driving conditions to ensure maximum reliability," added Hassim. The FJ's 6.37-litre, water cooled, direct injection and turbocharged diesel engine makes light work of any task, offering an output of 170kW/2200 rpm and the torque levelling at 810Nm between 1,200rpm to 1,600rpm. When the dry-single plate, hydraulic actuated control with servo assistance clutch is paired with the all-conquering 6-speed manual transmission, there is no task too tough for the FJ series of trucks. On the inside, the engineers have designed a more comfortable cabin that reduces driver fatigue, using three-way adjustable driver seat and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel which allows the driver to choose an optimum driving position. The cabin is fitted with standard air-conditioning and rear windows that allow maximum ventilation. Driver aids include a variable green band indicator that shows the driver the correct gear and speed required to minimise fuel consumption, and an intelligent instrument cluster ensures all vital information is always easily visible. The trip mileage indicator displays the distance travelled, average speed and fuel consumption. On the outside, the aerodynamic design of the cab reduces wind resistance and reduces noise, resulting in a quieter, more comfortable drive. The FJ aims to be a driver's best friend by offering a parabolic front suspension that increases comfort and drivability. The multi-leaf rear suspension has more and thicker leaves to improve longevity and carry heavier loads. The FUSO FJ 16-230 is set to be one of the safest trucks on the roads, as it is fitted with front standard anti-roll bars for greater safety and to improve road grip and vehicle stability, especially when cornering or changing lanes at high speed.

Namibian Junior Chess Team in Monthly Medal postponed Swakopmund to compete in Afrito 3 August on request Beautiful and sunny here at Rossmund, although the southwester can Youth Chess Championship seems to be putting in an appearance again. Yesterday it was howling – and throwing lots of sand around. I understand that the eastwind is blowing out at Rossing. So I wonder what the weekend has in store. Wednesday competitions are still very popular with the players as a good turnout is in evidence every week. Wednesday 17August was Proshop Day – with some vouchers on the go – thanks as always to Marco for his support. Scores were back to normal after the previous two weeks with Bertie coming out on top in the 18 hole competition with 37pts, followed by Cobus on 35pts – the 9 hole competition went to our friend from across the river Willie shooting 20pts over the front 9 (who whispered in my ear that he is giving up Ha! Ha! – not sure what he will do then as he plans to go into semi-retirement shortly). Saturday 20 August was the annual Mermaid Casino 3- Ball Alliance – as can be expected a good time was had by all – I have some winning names but no scores or photos – which could mean one of two things – they were unbelievable or very bad!!!!!!! Winners: 1st: S Bonifacius/S Ndalumbumo/T Shitaleni; 2nd: G Breedt/M Ludeke/C Bothma; 3rd: D Benson/D Kock/M Jacobs. Well played guys and a special word of thanks to the long time sponsor Mermaid Casino. Some of our players travelled to Windhoek for the finals of 2016 Sanlam Cancer Challenge - unfortunately none of the players managed to make the grade this time around. The Namibian Junior Chess Team arrived, ready to compete at the prestigious 2016 AFRICAN YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. The Championship is being held at The Boardwalk Hotel, Convention Centre and Spa, Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa and will come to an end on Sunday 28 August. The Namibian team consists of 34 players from under 8 to under 18 age categories (boys and girls) that qualified from the following regions: Khomas, Karas, Erongo and Otjozondjupa. This is the big-gest chess delegation to date to participate outside of the country. The team is headed by Mrs Melitta Kgobetsi-Mathe, coaches Mr Sanders Oberholzer and Mr Immanuel Gariseb. There are 14 African countries participating with over 300 players who will be facing each other over the nine days. The 2016 African Youth Chess Championship is held in accordance with FIDE regulations and is open to all African Continent players who qualified and are affiliated to the World Chess Federation (FIDE). Dr Brian Van Zyl, the convener of this prestigious event informed the delegates that Chess is being considered to become a sport code to participate in the next Olympic Games. The African Chess Confederation President, Mr Lewis Ncube said that since its introductory event in 2009, the tournament has grown in number participation as well as the standard of play. The Junior Chess Team continues to face challenges in finding sponsors to assist the participants to compete in tournaments outside the country. The Africa Endurance Championships 2016, hosted by the Namibian Endurance Ride Association (NERA), started at the crack of dawn on Wednesday morning, 24 August, with 164 participants from Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. This elite annual equestrian competition is seen as the ultimate endurance challenge, as it puts both rider and horse to the test. Riders are taken through a variety of areas such as along the salt pans, through the dunes by Dune 7 and along the sea. “The riders ride about 120km in total with resting stops, giving horses at least 45 minutes to rest and drink water. We take the condition of horses very seriously�, commented a senior official, Dieter Neumann. Endurance is a competition where the speed and endurance of a horse is put to the test, but riders are also tested as to how effective they use pacing and the thorough knowledge they have of their horses. Although the riders are time bound, finishing in good condition rather than coming first is the main goal. Excessive fatigue, signs of lameness and other indications of problems can lead to elimination from the competition. Participants, including guests from Turkey; America and Ireland, were welcomed on Monday, 22 August, with a welcoming function at Walvis Bay Town Hall. The prize giving function will be held tonight at Walvis Bay Town Hall.
