A day Swakopmund will never forget Staff Reporter

An electrical short circuit is believed to have started the inferno in which, miraculously, everyone escaped un-harmed. According to a preliminary investigation, the fire started a few minutes before 14:30 in the consulting room of Dr. Moisel. The building is situated on the corner of Sam Nujoma Avenue and Nathaniël Maxuilili Street with the pharmacy occupying most of the floor space. It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in electrical installations located behind the receptionist desk. The outbreak of the fire was noticed almost immediately and a fire extinguisher was immediately at hand. However, the flames spread so rapidly that soon there was nothing people could do, other than to evacuate the building. "I saw a lady running to the pharmacy to get another fire extinguisher, but by the time she got back to the consulting room it was engulfed in smoke. It was too risky to enter due to the
smoke and soon it was engulfed in raging flames", an eye witness told namib times. A handful of people from other businesses in the vicinity also ran to their aid with fire extinguishers, but the fire was already out of control. Swakopmund's Fire Chief, Adri Goosen, got an emergency call at about 14:34. About ten minutes later five fire fighters as well as a dozen firefighting volunteers were on the scene. In total, some 20 firemen jumped to action. By then the fire already destroyed the consulting room and was spreading towards Dolphin Pharmacy on Sam Nujoma Avenue. Three fire trucks, one carrying 5 000 liters of water and two others transporting 2 000 liters each, were deployed. "We immediately started fighting the blaze," said Goosen. Immense volumes of water were required. The fire brigade's first setback came when a fire

hydrant across the street (at Bonus Marktplatz) was useless, as it did not have sufficient water flow due to a water pressure problem. There are construction activities in the immediate rea and therefore the fire hydrant could not be routinely tested in recent weeks. The Fire Brigade was now racing for time. They activated a second fire hydrant on Nathaniël Maxuilili, south of the intersection with Sam Nujoma Avenue (at Wynkelders Bottle Store), but by that time the heat in the burning building reached such extreme temperatures the smoke had turned yellow, Goosen explained. Bystanders had to take cover as stock items in the pharmacy like deodorants started to explode. Tenants in neighbouring properties on Sam Nujoma and Nathaniel Maxuilili also fought fiercely to prevent the fire from spreading to their businesses. Garden hoses were used to wet the roofs and others stated to carry valuables out of their shops, should the fire start to spread. Thanks to these heroic efforts the fire could not spread and it gave the firefighters the opportunity to concentrate all their resources on the fire in the pharmacy and consulting rooms. Businesses like Bears Furnitures, Swakop Optics and Fine Art Gallery were saved. "We rushed all our paintings out to safety," explained Martina von Wenzel of the Fine Art
Gallery. Similarly, the staff of the music shop Young Ones were saved as bystanders carried all valuable equipment across the street to the clothing outlet of Lohmeiers Men's Outfitters. The fire was under control within 30 minutes after the arrival of the Fire Brigade. A total of 14 000 liters of water was required. According to Goosen firefighters were on standby until 20:30 to prevent flare-ups. Many businesses in the vicinity closed their shops during the fire to prevent hot ash, cinders and smoke starting more fires. The Southwester that was blowing at the time sent cinders flying for hundreds of meters increasing the risk of secondary fires starting. Shortly after the devastating incident messages of sympathy and support for the owners of the pharmacy and the medical consulting room started to stream in. Employees were standing in front of the shops, speechless and shocked. Renovations to modernize the Dolphin Pharmacy were almost complete. Only finishing touches were still required. Nothing is left. Dr. Rüdiger Moisel had been practicing from that location since 1990. Goosen thanked volunteers and members of the public for their assistance. Law enforcement officers also assisted effectively to keep crowds of bystanders at a safe distance.

Woman robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight Erwin Leuschner A female delivery person of a prominent law firm in Swakopmund was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight on Wednesday in Sam Nujoma Ave-nue. The incident occurred on the pavement area close to the old snake park across the Engen Service Station. The victim was apparently in too much shock to open a case with the police. According to Matthew So-Oabeb, husband of the victim Monica, his wife was walking to Shoprite when she was approached by two men. "They probably followed her and were watching her for a while," he said. It was during lunchtime, when one of the two men approached her from behind and called "meme". Once she turned around they grabbed her. One of the men pointed a gun at the victim, while they took off her wedding ring from her finger, her necklace, ear rings, cellphone and her handbag before running away. The suspects were described as one being a tall person wearing a red jacket and khaki pants. The other person was wearing a yellow t-shirt and denim jeans. They are in their 20s.

The Trends "glam fairies" did an amazing job, and all the matrics had their moment in the spotlight. Nyoni added, "We have noticed that many girl's don't have the means to dress up on their matric dance night's & miss out on the opportunity to commemorate their high school year's. We would like to express our gratefulness, towards everyone who has helped us so far with this noble cause. We appreciate your kindness and generosity."

Helalia Petrus is an eighteen-year-old learner at De Duine Secondary School, and she has found a talent for making furniture which she sells as a means of income. Helalia has been making various chairs and tables by reusing old furniture frames and strapping. She makes these furniture pieces in a matter of hours, and sells them just as far. Helalia has been doing very well with her project, but runs out of supplies every now and then. Money she makes does not always cover the needed equipment. 25 AUGUST 2017 Media Release An insurmountable number of organisations and individuals around the globe have come under attack in recent months by ransomware, designed to cripple these organisations/individuals in exchange for cash. As the name suggests, malicious software is installed in various digital devices, corrupting the owners' files, rendering them unreadable and/or inaccessible, unless the owners of the devices pay a ransom. Within organisations where the digital devices share a network, the ransomware can spread. “Cyber criminals have perfected the art of tricking people into unknowingly participating in scams. With ransomware, they typically send an email containing a link or a file as an attachment. Once you click on it, malicious software is deployed, scrambling (encrypting) your files and demanding a ransom for their release,” Standard Bank's Acting Head of Marketing, Sigrid Tjijorokisa warned. She added that when a computer is infected, the ransomware encrypts important documents and files and then demands a ransom for a digital key needed to unlock the files. If victims don't have a recent back-up of the files they must either pay the ransom or face losing all of their files. Ransomware is one of the most malicious forms of hacking and malware in recent years it has the ability to not only cripple you personally, but your business as well, corrupting important data to the extent of making it irretrievable. “The best way to protect oneself from ransomware is by ensuring that you keep your security and software up to date on all your devices, remember to back up your files securely and regularly and to not open emails/attachments you are not expecting,” Tjijorokisa advised. Unfortunately, for those individuals who find themselves already at the mercy of ransomware, they are advised to not pay the ransom as demanded by the cybercriminals.

Registered car guards in Walvis Bay received their municipal reflector jackets and ID cards on Thursday afternoon. These guards can now be identified from unregistered car guards. A number of car guards gathered at the Walvis Bay Fire Brigade to meet with Nampol and traffic officials to receive their jackets and ID cards. "They now wear recognisable gear", said traffic chief Eben Platt. Adding registered car guards now have zones in which they work. Platt also made use of the opportunity on Thursday to address guards on the recent crime trends associated with unregistered or fake car guards. They used the disguise as car guard for opportunities to steal. Platt urged registered car guards to pay attention and to "be the eyes and ears on the ground". An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Entzückende Arche-Noah-Aufführung des Bienenkorb-Kindergartens Swakopmund (sk) - Wenn Sie denken, dass es schwierig ist, Vögel zu fotografieren, dann sollten Sie es erstmal mit einem Sack Kleinkinder bzw. Flöhe probieren, liebe Leser. Das jedenfalls war meine Erfahrung bei der Aufführung des Bienenkorb-Kindergartens in der Stadtmission. Die Kinder auf und unter den Bühnenbretter zeigten eine derartige Aufregung, Freude und Energie, dass die Kameralinse automatisch zu vibrie-

Als ich aus dem Sammelsurium an Bildern dann einige heraussuchte, die nicht verwackelt waren, und sie der Leiterin des Kindergartens, Imme Rapmund, zuschickte, meinte sie: ,,Man schaut sich die Fotos an und hat einfach jedes Kind lieb, obwohl sie alle so unterschiedlich sind…” Genau dieser Satz beschreibt Imme Rapmund. Sie liebt “ihre” Kinder, und das spürt man durch und durch. Frau Rapmund lässt uns hinter die Kulissen schauen: “Wir sind immer wieder aufs Neue erstaunt, wie schnell die Kinder die Texte auswendig lernen. Die größte Vorarbeit ist immer das Erklären der Worte, denn viele Kinder kommen aus mehrsprachigen Familien. Da gibt es zum Beispiel den Patrick Lettenbauer, der sagen soll: "Sieh an, mein werter Nachbar Noah und seine Söhne, so eifrig bei der Arbeit!" Er sagte jedoch immer: "Sieh an, mein ALTER Nachbar Noah und seine SIEBEN Söhne...!" Ich hatte echt Sorge, was aus den Söhnen noch so wird - dass Noah alt war, stimmte ja! Und statt : "Ich glaube, bei dem stimmt was nicht! " wurde gesagt: "Ich glaube, bei dem stimmt doch alles!"- bezogen auf Noah! An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Erinnerungen an eine Buchhandlung Die Kurzgeschichte des Schriftstellers, Essayisten und Journalisten George Orwell aus dem Jahre 1936 wird hier in vier Episoden wiedergegeben. 4. und letzte Folge Mit einem guten Angebot und dem nötigen Kapital sollte jeder gebildete Mensch in der Lage sein, einen bescheidenen, aber sicheren Lebensunterhalt aus einer Buchhandlung zu ziehen. Wenn man sich nicht auf “seltene” Bücher spezialisieren will, ist dieses Gewerbe nicht schwierig zu erlernen; und man hat schon zu Beginn einen großen Vorsprung, wenn man etwas vom inneren Wesen eines Buches versteht... Auch ist es ein menschliches Gewerbe, das man nicht unter eine gewisse Grenze herabwürdigen kann. Die Warenhäuser werden niemals dem kleinen, unabhängigen Buchhändler die Existenzgrundlage entziehen können, wie sie das schon zum Teil bei Kolonialwarenhändlern und dem Milchmann geschafft haben. Aber die Arbeitszeit ist sehr lang - ich war nur teilzeitbeschäftigt, doch mein Arbeitgeber hatte in der Regel eine SiebzigS t u n d e n - Wo c h e , wozu noch ständige Expeditionen außerhalb der Arbeitszeit zum Einkauf von Büchern kamen -, und das Leben ist un-

Gewöhnlich ist eine Buchhandlung im Winter schrecklich kalt; denn wenn es einigermaßen warm ist, beschlagen die Schaufenster, und ein Buchhändler lebt von seinen Schaufensterauslagen. Und Bücher produzieren mehr und ekelhafteren Staub als jeder andere bis heute erfundene Gegenstand, und die Oberkante eines Buches ist genau der Platz, an dem jede Blaue Stubenfliege sich am liebsten zum Sterben niederlässt. Aber der wahre Grund, warum ich nicht mein Leben lang im Buchhandel tätig sein möchte, ist folgender: ich habe während dieser Zeit meine Liebe zu Büchern verloren. Ein Buchhändler muß Lügen über Bücher erzählen, und dadurch distanziert er sich von ihnen; schlimmer noch ist der Umstand, daß er sie ständig abstauben und von einem Platz an
den anderen stellen muss. Es gab einmal eine Zeit, in der ich Bücher wirklich liebte den Anblick, den Geruch und das Gefühl, sie in der Hand zu halten, meine ich; zumindest wenn sie fünfzig oder mehr Jahre alt waren. Nichts bereitete mir mehr Freude, als an einer Auktion auf dem Lande einen Posten solcher Bücher günstig für einen Schilling zu erstehen. Eine eigenartige Atmosphäre umschwebt diese abgegriffenen alten Bände, die man unerwartet in solchen Sammlungen aufstöbert: unbedeutende Dichter aus dem achtzehnten Jahrhundert, überholte geographische Lexika, Einzelbände von vergessenen Romanen, gebundene Jahrgänge von Frauenmagazinen der sechziger Jahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts. Für unbeschwertes Lesen - in der Badewanne zum Beispiel, oder spät abends, wenn man zu
müde zum Zubettgehen ist, oder in der restlichen Viertelstunde vor dem Essen - gibt es nichts, was an eine alte Nummer von Girl's Own Paper heranreicht. Doch sobald ich meine Arbeit in der Buchhandlung angetreten hatte, hörte ich auf, Bücher zu kaufen. Als Masse gesehen, fünf- oder zehntausend auf einmal, wirken Bücher langweilig und sogar leicht ekelerregend. Heute kaufe ich mir wieder gelegentlich eins, aber nur wenn es ein Buch ist, das ich unbedingt lesen möchte und nicht leihen kann; und ich kaufe niemals mehr alte Bücher. Der ehemals so angenehme Duft zerfallenden Papiers übt keine Anziehungskraft mehr auf mich aus; er ist in meiner Erinnerung zu eng mit paranoischen Kunden und toten Fliegen verbunden. Locker vom Hocker Schrumpferitis!
Liebe Küstenleser! Die Meinungen gehen auseinander, ob mehr Menschen weltweit an Malaria, AIDS , Diabetes oder HerzSchmerz erkranken. Der Krebs (die calvinistischen Afrikaaner sprachen damals von “DIE KWAAD”) steht wahrscheinlich an oberster Stelle! Von mir aus können sich die Menschen darüber in die Haare kriegen. Ich denke, unser 21. Jahrhundert erkrankt vor allem an Schrumpferitis. Vor 30 Jahren ersteigerten wir hier in Kramersdorf ein Grundstück von fast 1800 Quadratmetern, auf dem wir ein Haus bauen und einen weitläufigen Garten anlegen konnten. Die zum Hausbau abgesteckten Fleckchen Erde in dieser Umgebung, die in den letzten Jahren hier verkauft wurden, sind im Durchschnitt nur noch etwa ein
Drittel so groß wie unseres. Natürlich schrumpft auch unser Lebensraum, nicht nur durch unsere karnickelartige Vermehrung, sondern auch durch die FOLGEN der Bevölkerungsexplosion, wie zum Beispiel der Erderwärmung, die unsere zerbrechliche Erde langsam verschluckt. Vieles wird kleiner! Vor einiger Zeit hat unsere deutsche Tageszeitung ihr Format reduziert, und nun ist auch unsere Küstenzeitung nach fast sechzig Jahren um ganze zwei Zentimeter kürzer geworden. Oder schauen wir uns einmal das Telefon an. Zu Omas Zeiten stand noch solch ein gigantischer Kasten mit imposanter Wählscheibe auf dem Tischchen im Flur, und auf einer hoch aus dem Kasten ragenden Gabel lag pompös ein anmutig-verschnörkelter Telefonhörer.
Vom Telefonkörper aus lief eine dicke, gedrehte Plastikschnur zum Schalter in der Wand. Heute passt das Telefon schnuckelig in unsere Hand. Wie dem auch sei, Minimalismus scheint das Credo unserer Zeit zu sein. Ob es sich nun ums Telefon, die Zeitung oder einen Betrieb handelt, der Mitar-
beiter entlässt, weil er sich verkleinern will oder muss. Vielleicht ist der Trend der Miniaturisierung nicht in jedem einzelnen Falle eine Erkrankung, sondern eher ein gesunder Prozess? Darüber kann man sich erneut streiten. Tatsache bleibt jedoch, dass Vieles kleiner wird, Das hat der griechische Philosoph Heraklit bereits im 5. Jahrhundert vor Christus festgestellt. Heraklit ist vor allem durch seinen Gedanken des panta rhei (alles ist ein Werden und Vergehen) in die Annalen der Ge-
schichte eingegangen. Holz wird zu Asche, ein praller Luftballon zu bröseligen Gummistückchen - so nach dem Motto, alles schrumpft!
Wir selbst schrumpfen auch. Gerade im Alter machen sich die Folgen der langjährig tätigen Erdanziehungskraft bemerkbar. Der Popo leidet an Muskelschwund, die Oberarme werden zu hängenden Gärten der Semiramis und das Gehirn scheint auch in sich zusammenzusacken es sei denn, man hält es durch Rummikub- oder Schachspielen auf Trab. Nur die Ohrmuscheln scheinen sich vehement gegen die Schrumpferitis zu wehren, sich zu dehnen und zu strecken, damit ihnen ja nichts Sensationelles entgeht. Ich finde das alles aufregend und freue mich schon auf den Zeitpunkt, wenn mein Garten für mich das ist, was für andere das Jetsetten zwischen Buones Aires, Washington DC, London, Peking und Moskau ist nämlich ein Garten so groß wie die Welt. In May and June this year, for example, FNB Namibia's CARE system logged a total or 1197 queries, 234 complaints and 17 compliments. Travelling museum exhibition returns home Piquet Jacobs
The travelling museum exhibition, Usakos: Photographs beyond Ruins. The Old Location Albums, 1920s to 1960s returns to Namibia following a tour through South Africa and an exhibition in Maputo, Mozambique. The exhibition brings into play the private archives of four women who lived in the Old Location of Usakos: Cecilie //Geises, Wilhelmine Katjimune, Gisela Pieters and Olga //Garoës. The initiative is a proud collaboration between Usakos Town Council, the Museums Association of Namibia (MAN), the University of Basel, the University of Namibia and District Six Museum, with assistance of two Swiss donors – the Carl Schlettwein Stifftung and Stiftung Mercato. The exhibition is made up of historical photographs of what life in the Old Location was like, as well as contemporary photographs of the town by the photographer Paul Grendon. The exhibited images capture the ambience of the town, while also showing the `ruins' which hint at the town's former prosperity as one of the most important railway workshops in the country. Dr Jeremy Silvester, MAN's Project Development Manager says "The exhibition is an exciting example of the
new approach to museums that we are happy to see developing in Namibia. It shows the ways in which it is possible to work with communities to make exhibitions and museums that tell the stories that are important to a community. District Six Museum is famous for showcasing the impact of apartheid policies in Cape Town, a big city. However, this Namibian exhibition is sharing the experiences of a small town. Usakos has a unique history, but there is also much that will be familiar to other Namibians who grew up in small towns before independence. The exhibition will give young Namibians an insight into our past and that is why we wanted the first venue to be at UNAM. We hope this exhibition will also encourage former residents of Usakos to support the Town Council in the development of a
permanent museum at the town." Ms Saara Ilovu, the Local Economic Development Officer for Usakos says that the Usakos Museum Advisory Committee has a vision. "We believe that the museum will encourage many of those people who just drive through Usakos or stop to buy some biltong to stop and spend some more time and some more money in our beautiful town. Usakos has many histories and many mysteries that people will discover from this exhibition. I would like to thank the University of Namibia and the University of Basel for helping us with research. We are looking forward to working with MAN to develop our museum as a vehicle for local economic development and I would like to encourage Namibians to help us to achieve our dream". The exhibition was launched on Wednesday evening at the University of Namibia, which is followed a week long training session on exhibition planning and development for students and museum workers. The exhibition is available to travel within Namibia, as well as to promote Namibia abroad. Namibia Junior Men’s at 2017 First World Championships in Nanjing China The Namibia Ice and Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA), the governing body of Inline Hockey in Namibia hereby wishes to announce and inform the Namibia about the participation of the Namibian Junior Men Inline Hockey Team, who will represent Namibia at the FIRS (Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports) World Roller Games in Nanjing, China from 23 August to 03 September 2017.

NIIHA invited and hosted Team Trials during 21 to 23 October 2016 at Kamikaze Inline hockey Club and selected players from various clubs to make up two Development Teams in the under 10 and under 12 divisions to take part in the North American Roller Hockey Championships (NARCh) in San Jose, California, USA in June 2017. During these trails four National Teams were originally selected to represent Namibia at the 2017 FIRS World Championships in Beijing, China in August 2017. Due to school exams and other unforeseen commitments of some of the selected players, NIIHA could only maintain and train with the young, but committed Junior Men National Team, who will represent Namibia at these World Championships. As part of the International Program offered by the Namibian Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA), the Namibian Junior Men's Inline Hockey Team will represent Namibia China at the world-premiere World Roller Games organized by the World Federation FIRS. In contrast to previous years, where FIRS had offered only the World Inline Hockey Championships (Toulouse, France 2015 and Asiago / Roana, Italy 2016, where Namibia was also represented), the World Roller Games will be offered for the first time for all sports on reels, among others Inline hockey, roller hockey, artistic skating, downhill skating, marathon skating and more. After completing several training camps, the last of which took place in Swakopmund at The Dome, on 23 August 2017, the team is ready to set off for Nanjing, China. There will be two training days on the first day, after which the official FIRS program starts on 27 August 2017, with the pre-games and Namibia first opponent would be Spain. The groups in which the 18 nations have been divided, were ranked according to the last competition, which took place in Italy in 2016 (Namibian Junior Men was placed 21 out of 24 during the 2016 World Cup in Italy), are as follows: Group A: CZE, USA, TPE, AUS, IRI Group B: ITA, CAN, COL, IND, NZL Group C: SUI, SWE, GER, KOR Group D: ESP, FRA, GBR, NAM The other opponents against whom Namibia will play during the pre-games are as follows: On 28 August against France and 29 August will be against England. The first round placements, quarter-finals and semi-finals will take place from 30 August. The Czech Republic team won the title the past 9 years and is still the favourite. The Namibian team's goal is to improve their ranking in the World Cup and of course to gain additional experience at the international level. NIIHA successfully organized and hosted the Africa Cup (with international participation) at The Dome in Swakopmund from 23 to 27 May 2017, as well as sending two junior development teams (U10 and U12) to San Jose, California, USA to participate in the North American Roller Championships (NarCh) in June 2017 where the U10 team took the gold medal home and the U12 team narrowly missed the bronze medal.
