A Swakopmund resident who took the day off on sick leave on Tuesday was found dead in his Vineta home on Wednesday morning. An autopsy will now determine what caused 50 year old Mario du Plessis's death in his flat in Vineta's Omeg Street where he lived alone. According to the Namibian Police in Erongo's Crime Investigation Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, du Plessis allegedly phoned in on Tuesday morning and informed colleagues he is not feeling well and would stay home for the day. When du Plessis did not turn up for work on Wednesday morning, colleagues first tried to reach him on his cell phone. When they failed, they went to his home where they found him dead.

Police investigators are now puzzling together how and why Bruwer removed furniture from two flats in Swakopmund, totalling N$90 000 in value. The stolen items include a dining room table, six chairs, two leisure chairs, a lounge suite, a double door fridge, a double bed, a deep freezer, tumble dryer, a spray gun and even the

two front doors of the flats where the items were allegedly stolen from. Criminal charges were laid by the owners of the furniture. The Police recovered the furniture and Bruwer was implicated. Bruwer was arrested and charged with housebreaking with the intent to steal and theft.

Contributes to fighting drought In response to the Namibian government's state of emergency declaration on the current drought affecting the country, Bank Windhoek, as a responsible corporate citizen has implemented various measures to minimise the effects of this unfortunate disaster. From a customer perspective, an internal committee has been established to look at both commercial and communal farmers exposures and find innovative ways to mitigate the impact of loss of income on their financial obligations. In addition, farmers are urged to get in contact with their respective Branch Managers to seek mutual solutions. Furthermore, Bank Windhoek will place key strategic focus on stakeholder engagement in the coming months to add value and be a connector of positive change within the farming sector. The Bank Windhoek Vehicle and Asset Finance Department is offering John Deere bush equipment, which will enable farmers to become sustainable in producing animal fodder. The initiative, known as Bush-to-Feed, refers to the production of animal fodder, using encroached bush. According to the De-bushing Advisory

People need more training on fire safety Sharlien Tjambari Teachers, learners and institutional workers from various schools in Swakopmund gathered at the Fire Brigade Department on Wednesday afternoon to join the workshop which was aimed at raising awareness about fire safety and what measures to be taken during a fire emergency. Robeam Ujaha an Environmental Health Practitioner at the Swakopmund Municipality said people don't know what fire safety is, “so we thought how do we start educating people on fire safety and that is when we decided to start with schools. All local schools in Swakopmund received an invitation letter. The idea today was to raise awareness on the use of a fire extinguisher itself because it is some-thing we have in our homes”. During an interview with Namib Times, Ujaha said it is now up to the group which attended the workshop to go and share the information with fellow colleagues, learners and community members. “We also want to build a relationship with the community, because our next step is to approach the community in the informal DRC settlement where fire accidents are more common”, added Ujaha. To garner school interest, the workshop was started with an open talk on scholar patrols and road safety tips for pedestrians, which was shared by Senior Traffic Officer Thomas Shindume. After the workshop the Acting Deputy Fire Chief Mr. Shongolo said he noticed that the people need more and more training on fire safety. During the workshop, it was clear that many schools in Swakopmund do not have fire hoses to use for fire emergencies, their fire hydrants are outdated and out of order and people never received training on how to use fire hydrants. The workshop was organised by the Swakopmund Municipality's Health Department in Collaboration with the Fire Brigade Department. Schools that attended the workshop were Namib High school, Swakopmund Secondary school, Westside High school, and Atlantic Junior Secondary school, Pro-ed Akademie, Swakopmund Christian Academy, Festus Gonteb Primary school, Tamariskia Primary school and Vrede Rede Primary school.

Moonlight Resort-Oasis in the Desert The days of worrying about where to go for an outing are now over because Moonlight Resort near Swakopmund has re-opened with new ownership and affordable prices. Erongo Marine Supports The Kunene Child Through Sida Di/goan Project Erongo Marine Enterprises (EME) contributed N$323 000 towards Operation Sida Di/Goan, a project initiated by Kunene Governor Marius Sheya in 2018 and officially commissioned by President Hage Geingob at Kamanjab on Thursday. Translated from Khoekhoegowab meaning "Our Children, Our Responsibility", Operation Sida Di/Goan was born out of the desire to transform the educational landscape of the region, which faces many challenges due to the levels of extreme poverty and vastness of the region. The focus of the project is to repair all broken desks, chairs and beds from various schools in Kunene. Since the launch of Operation Sida Di/Goan, 420 broken beds, 3 864 broken desks and 5 473 broken chairs were collected. With the assistance of seven intern students from the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) and ten unemployed youth volunteers from Kamanjab, 216 beds, 2 000 desks and 2 000 chairs have been fixed to date. These will be distributed to schools

throughout the Kunene Region, together with donations from the public and private sector. Through the Arechanab Community Trust, EME donated N$253 000 to the project through the Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) to purchase 1 387 new school mattresses at a total cost of N$478 000. EME also contributed N$70 000 in the form of canned fish and maize meal. Praising the Kunene Governor for this initiative, President Geingob noted that it is a significant step towards solving the education related problems in Namibia's rural areas. “Instead of complaining about problems, stakeholders have come together to identify solutions that can help to mitigate some of the challenges facing our schools and learners. I also commend all stakeholders who have heeded the Governor's clarion call to aid and support this project.” President Geingob said. In a statement EME Managing Director Dr Martha Uumati congratulated Governor Sheya on his unique and visionary initiative. Said Uumati: “True to our motto to 'empower, equip and transform', it is an honour and privilege for Erongo Marine Enterprises to be associated with Operation Sida Di/Goan and know that our contribution will make a difference in the learning environment of the children of this region.”

Usakos exhibition in Shanghai will uplift the community Sharlien Tjambari

The travelling exhibition “Usakos – Photographs beyond Ruins: the old location albums, 1920s-1960s” is currently on show in China. The Chief Executive Officer of Usakos Ivin Lombardt said the exhibition will contribute to the upliftment of the community. The vice-president of East China Normal University in Shanghai, Dr Li Zhibin, officially opened the exhibition, which will be on show until the end of May. It is the first exhibition on Africa that the East China Normal University has ever hosted in its beautiful gallery space and the exhibition on the history of Usakos is attracting a lot of interest amongst students and staff. Bringing the Usakos exhibition to China was the result of a tri-lateral collaboration between the University of Basel, Switzerland, the East China Normal University, Shanghai, and the Museums Association of Namibia. According to Lombardt the Usakos town Council has been part of the planning and execution as well. In fact, a local resident, Mr Robbie Sabab, who was trained in setting up and displaying the international mobile exhibition accompanied the exhibition to Shanghai, China. Mr Sabab is a member of the Usakos Museum Committee and the Museums Association of Namibia. He has been actively involved in the mounting of the Usakos exhibition at different venues over the last four years and with activities linked to the exhibition. The local hosts of the exhibition, Prof Mu Tao from the History Department and Dr Hu Ying from the Museum Studies Department indicated that it had created curiosity amongst staff and students about Namibian history and art. They were deeply impressed by the quality and uniqueness of the historical photographs in the Usakos exhibition and expressed their sincere interest in the possibility of future exhibition exchanges as a vehicle for dialogue. Mr Sabab suggested that the Chinese hosts might consider developing an exhibition that could introduce Chinese lives to a Namibian audience. When asked by namib times how this exhibition will benefit Usakos Lombardt said: “We foresee that a great deal of awareness about our small town, Usakos would be raised in China through the exhibition. The same exhibition has been displayed in places like Basel, Geneva, Berlin, parts of the US, the

Caribbean, and Mozambique and in many parts of South Africa. We are optimistic that by the time our Museum is up and running, we will receive many visitors, who will contribute to the upliftment of our community”. Lombardt further said the Usakos Museum is not fully operational at this moment. Council is still putting together the puzzles that will see it become

operational, most likely by the end of the year. “We are lucky to have the support of the Museum Association of Namibia (MAN) every step of the way. At the same time, we are also collecting more artifacts that will be displayed in the museum once it becomes operational”. The Museum will open in the OMEG building and will showcase the history and culture of the town.

Swakopmund (sk) In unserer Mitte gibt es etliche Senioren, die viel zu erzählen haben. Ich habe mich mit dem 95jährigen Dieter Kopp in der Antonius-Residenz unterhalten. In fünf Folgen dürfen Sie auf seiner Lebensreise eine Brise Nostalgie einatmen. Herr Kopp erzählt: “Da sah ich sie wieder - irgendwann lud sie mich dann ein: “Wenn Sie mal einen großen Schafbetrieb sehen wollen, Herr Kopp, dann kommen Sie her.” Auf meine Frage, ob er denn damals schon verliebt gewesen sei, antwortete unsere Senior:“Verliebt? Nein, ich fand die Frau eher interessant.” Na, wenn das nicht die beste Voraussetzung für eine lange Ehe ist! Es blieb erstmal bei der Einladung. Doch vier Monate später bekam Herr Kopp einen Anruf von Ines, ob er nicht aushelfen könne, es sei

Brei mag auf den ersten Moment langweilig und nach Schullandheim klingen – und schmecken tut er tatsächlich sehr neutral – doch richtig kombiniert und zubereitet kann er mehr, als man ihm zutraut. Wichtig: Unbedingt mit den Händen essen! Zutaten: 4 Becher Wasser; 2 Becher Maismehl; 1/2 TL Salz Zubereitung: 1. Das Wasser zum Kochen bringen und Salz hinzugeben. Dann das Maismehl langsam in das kochende Wasser schütten und rühren. Die Hitze runterschalten und den Brei köcheln lassen. Immer wieder umrühren. 2. Herd ausmachen und den Topf mit geschlossenem Deckel 30 Minuten stehen lassen. Ab und zu umrühren.

Die Konsistenz des Paps sollte fest bis bröckelig sein, sodass er gut mit den Fingern zu fassen ist. Nächste Woche erfolgt die Zubereitung einiger interessanter Beilagen zum Mieliepap.

Wär wie ein Weinstock ohne Rebe, nur ein Reiter ohne Ross. .Wenn es keine Freunde gäbe, ich wär ein schlüsselloses Schloss. Ich wär ein Lied ohne Gesang und wie ein weißes, leeres Blatt, denn man hört nur den eignen Klang, wenn man die richt’gen Freunde hat.

Rough & tough rally 2019 Rudi Bowe

Only one thing is better than competing in the annual Rough & Tough Rally and that is to have fun and raise funds for cancer. The 2019 Rough and Tough rally started yesterday at the Tony Rust Race Track in Windhoek. 38 rally teams with 9 support vehicles and 120 people stood together in the fight against cancer. All participating vehicles are off-road ready and manufactured before 1990 and should be able to cover 1 000km. “We are ready for the 2019 Rough & Tough Rally”, said Phillipie Baard, one of the organisers. The Rough & Tough Rally is not only about fun, but it is a major platform to raise funds annually in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN).

In 2018 around N$200 000 was raised and was contributed to the Cancer Association of Namibia. The event started at Windhoek's Tony Rust Race Track where after everyone went towards Karibib where they overnighted at the Klippenberg Country Lodge. Today they drive past Usakos, have lunch at Spitzkoppe and sleep over at the Brandberg Rest Camp in Uis. Day three, participants head through the Omaruru River, pass Okombahe onto the D2315 where they will overnight at the Koedoeberg Lodge where the event ends with a price giving.

Weather conditions were good and so was the golf. Scores were close and various count outs were needed to determine the winners. A few fines were handed out at prize-giving which is always good for a laugh. Since Waters lost its sponsorship, the team experienced a sad period over the past two seasons. It is almost unthinkable that a once proud coastal team will be kicked out of the Premier League. NPL executive committee made it clear yesterday that the bottom three teams on the NPL league will be relegated to the first league and will be considered final as rules are rules and will be strictly enforced and that only two clubs will be relegated to the first league, which is currently not active. With no teams available to replace the relegated clubs, this means the 2019-20 Namibian Premier League could kick off with just 13 clubs. Three teams will be relegated on Sunday and that is the final decision. Even if it means the first league will not start, the rules will be maintained. If the first league does not start and there are no clubs to promote, the 2019 '20 NPL season will kick off with just 13 clubs, NPL executive added. Blue Waters will play their final two games of the session against Okadandja FC and Citizens FC at 21:00 and 15:00 tomorrow 24 May and Sunday 25 May at the Kuisebmond Sports Field respectively. Eleven Arrows will play their final two games of the session against Life Fighters and Okadandja FC at 19:00 and 13:00 tomorrow 24 May and Sunday 25 May at the Kuisebmond Sports Field respectively.

Namibia Fight Championships Rudi Bowe

The second edition of Namibia Fight Championships held at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre was a huge success. It was a glorious event with fighters as young as 6 years old and two kickboxing fights where Ankia Rentzke defeated Marchell Vermaak and Arnett Nolte defeated Elize Arangies. In the first Namibia Fight Championships the fight between Rentzke and Vermaak ended in a draw. Delano Muller and Charlie Abisai defended their titles as both

the boxers were victorious. Danny of TDT faced boxers in exhibition fights in preparation for his upcoming fight in June. Monika Kambonde a woman boxer from Swakopmund defeated Tuli Reinhold n man a unanimous decision in a fascinating three-round boxing bout. The 15 year old Monika said after her fight that she would like to represent Namibia at the Olympic Games.

Erongo Social Services hosts fund-raising event Erongo Social Services (ESS) hosted a very successful fundraising event at the Walvis Bay Golf Club on Friday 17 May. Hopefully this will be the first of many more to come and will only grow each year. Congratulations to the winning team, Anna's Inn consisting of Pieter Burger, Piet van Niekerk and Deville Dreyer. In second place was the team of Rental Support Services (RSS), consisting of Duane Sanders, Stefan Jacksch and Thomas Wolff and in third place the team of Namib Diesel with their three players being Emile Vilbert, Kevin de Reuk and Jakkie de Witt.
