Seaflower Pelagic not part of #Fishrot - workers plead for a quota Floris Steenkamp Trade unions representing workers in Namibia's fishing industry urged Government this week to allocate a horse mackerel quota to Seaflower Pelagic Processing, “as a matter of life and death�. If this biggest fishing company in Walvis Bay is not allocated a quota, approximately 600 people will be jobless. The knock-on effect that would be disastrous to Walvis Bay's already severely strained economy and high jobless rate caused by mass business closures due to the Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions. Workers at Seaflower Pelagic Processing staged a peaceful protest at the company's premises on Wednesday. The most important message they want to convey to Government is not to mistake Seaflower Pelagic Processing (Pty)

Seaflower Pelagic not part of #Fishrot - workers plead Continued from page 1
Ltd with Seaflower White Fish at Lüderitz [which allegedly has ties to the #Fishrot scandal]. “We want to re-iterate that we are employees of Seaflower Pelagic Processing (Pty) Ltd based at Walvis Bay and should not be linked to Seaflower white fish (sic) in Lüderitz”, a statement reads issued by workers on Wednesday morning. The message was put out to the Namibian Government at top level as well as the Minister of Fisheries, Dr Albert Kawana, to allocate a horse mackerel quota to Seaflower Pelagic as a matter of utmost urgency. Failing of which approximately 600 workers will be jobless by 1 August and an opportunity will also be lost forever to commission a fish canning plant at Seaflower Pelagic Processing which would add another 400 employment opportunities. The messages displayed on placards by workers were messages of desperation and calls for Government not to have its judgment clouded by the #Fishrot scandal. “Don't cut our future”; “Dr Kawana – hear me”; “No job – No future”; Give us a quota. It is an infringement of our right to earn a salary and a living”; “Save jobs”; “The right to live means a right to work” and “Are we not part of Harambee?” These are some of the messages displayed by workers who throughout maintained social distancing, to ensure everyone's safety against the Coronavirus. In his message to Government, the President of the Trade Union Congress of Namibia (TUCNA) Mr Paulus Hango, said Seaflower Pelagic Processing is at a standstill as it has now fish quota to work. The Company issued workers with notices and the approximately 600 workers will be without a future in as little as a week from now. People between the age of 25 and 35 will lose their jobs as well as mothers of children. In the light of the current Coronavirus pandemic, Hango said the already burdened eco-
nomy of Walvis Bay and the wider country will be severely affected. People will be without jobs, they cannot return to their traditional homes where their families will care for them, as they are not allowed to leave or take public transport due to the Coronavirus measures in place. Here in Walvis Bay they will abruptly lose their ability to pay rent, buy food, care for their loved ones and could revert to criminal activity as an alternative to put bread on the table. Hango also cautioned Government against the new arrangement of quota auctioning. “It will cause a lot of instability. Company's who fail to buy quotas will go down and with them take down jobs and other much needed economic activities. The fact that Seaflower Pelagic Processing was not awarded a fishing quota, as it is seen as part of Seaflower Lüderitz which is allegedly linked to the #Fishrot scandal, urged both TUCNA and workers to call upon Government not be led by inconclusive investigations and public opinion in decision making over quotas. Also adding voice to the call upon Government to award Seaflower Pelagic Processing a quota was the Namibia Food and Allied Workers Union (Nafau). Nafau called upon Minister Kawana to re-asses the situation as a matter of utmost urgency and to award the Company a quota in order for it continue fish processing, catching operations and also proceed with plans to commission the new fish canning plant. The canning plant would create 400 additional jobs. Nafau urged Government to allow the #Fishrot investigations and prosecution to take its course, and to focus on the core: to allocate a fishing quota in order to preserve jobs and preserve the economy. Nafau also urged the Minister to place conditions on the quota to Seaflower which include permanent employment contracts, housing allowances, transport allowances, medical aid and a pension fund.

The delegation visited the Covid-19 operations center in Walvis Bay (town hall); the state hospitals in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund as well as the isolation facility at the National Youth Service Hostel at Henties Bay. The delegation will attend Governor Andre's weekly press briefing in Swakopmund today, and alter today visit Tunacor, Embwinda/Cadilu Fishing and Hangana Seafood Processors. On Saturday the delegation visits the Twaloloka settlement in Kuisebmond as well as the various town cemeteries. A debriefing to the media takes place at the operations center on Sunday
morning.

The lockdown period which started on 28 March this year has prompted people to think of innovative ideas to pass time and to stay physically and mentally healthy. And that was exactly this innovative attitude which brought twenty-eight residents of the Lions Old Age Home at Swakopmund to get together to write a book. Mr Kurt Johannesen, a resident of the Lions Old Age Home, explained this week the idea of a book was born when they were out three times a week walking to stay fit and healthy during the Stage 1 lockdown. “We decided this was something meaningful to do to pass our time during isolation�, explained Mr Johannesen this week to Namib Times. Residents were required to write their life stories, each allowed three pages to put their lives into word for posterity. Mr Johannesen and Mrs Theresa Wessels took the responsibility to bind the book. In this regard they are deeply thankful to Waltons Stationers who met them halfway with the cost of binding. The residents are truly proud of the final product. Sadly, one of the contributors to the book passed on in the meantime and two of the contributors have gone to frail care. Yet, the most important is their life stories are there for posterity to read, to learn from. Most important to enjoy. Note: Mr Kurt Johannesen has been at the helm of the Cancer Association of Namibia for more than two decades. He was born in Keetmanshoop and at one point also served as mayor of this Southern Namibian town. He moved to Swakopmund three years ago and is a resident of Lions Village old age home.
Jack-up rig arrives in Walvis Bay
The jack-up oil rig, Velaris-109, is alongside at the Tunacor jetties and will remain there for the next six to eight months. The legs of the rig can be seen towering high into the air from virtually any corner of Walvis Bay. With global oil prices depressed, as the world economy remains under pressure from the Covid-19 pandemic, the rig had to cease drilling operations in Angola. Thanks to efforts by Namdock, Namport and other stakeholders to attract business to Walvis Bay, the rig's operator chose the harbour town as the rig's temporary home base when it is not drilling for oil. Repair and maintenance work will be conducted alongside as well as activating the rig again for business in a few months' time.

Council donates PPE to keep Swakopmund police officers safe The Municipality of Swakopmund donated hand sanitiser and face masks valued at N$13 500-00 to the Namibian Police at Swakopmund, to assist officers to carry out their duties with reduced risk of contracting the Coronavirus. Police officers along with other law enforcement agencies remain exposed as they, like health workers and other frontline service providers, are working in areas where exposure to the Coronavirus is a grim reality. The items were handed over to the Namibian Police on Wednesday at the municipal council chambers. At the handover the mayor of Swakopmund, Cllr Nehemiah Salomon expressed gratitude on behalf of Council and the community of Swakopmund for the dedication with which law enforcers perform their task to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. The mayor emphasised the role personal protective equipment play for frontline people to keep them safe against contracting the Coronavirus. The municipality of Swakopmund has been working closely with the Namibian Police, in order to strike a balance between maintaining law and order, combating crime and also ensure the public and businesses conform with the rules guiding everyone's Covid-19 safety. In this regard cooperation included the provision of stationery and repairing police vehicles. The role of the Swakopmund municipal traffic department is also applauded in many regards. “Council wishes to reassure the community of Swakopmund of its commitment to provide quality service delivery to the community and as a Council and the community we represent, we are immensely grateful for support rendered by the Namibian Police and Correctional Services”, concluded Cllr Salomon. The Legend of Kudu Rugby Club Rudi Bowe
Namibia’s rugby fraternity expressed its sadness this week at the passing of the Western Rugby Region’s representative on the Namibia Rugby Board, Mr Chandler Plato. Plato died in Walvis Bay on Monday, plunging the local community in grief. The 49-year-old Plato’s contributions to FNB Kudu Rug-by Club in particular was remembers. Clubs and Na-tional teams were immense and his passing is a sad chapter in the history of the Club. The Deputy Minister of Sports, Youth and National Services Honourable Emma KantemaGaomas at a memorial service held in honour of the late Plato in Windhoek said “As we celebrate the life of Mr Plato, a life that was well lived and the roll that he played to advance the sports agenda in the country will always be cherished by the ministry and we would like to thank his wife, children and family for supporting him in serving the nation.” The Chief Administrator of the Namibian Sports Commission Simataa Mwiya said “This great man, husband, father, and community leader, someone who was more than just a leader, a man of the people will be missed by everyone and I am sure that every rugby loving person is saddened by his
