NIMT takes the lead in water treatment

The Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) will soon be able to treat waste water at three of its campuses countrywide to a standard where it can be used for irrigation, flushing of toilets and washing vehicles. An armed robbery rocked the small community of Arandis on Wednesday. Two armed men entered Nampost's post office in the town between 09:00 and 10:00, held up the only employee on duty and fled with N$20 000 in cash.

The incident was confirmed by Nampol spokesperson, Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu. The two suspects entered the post office pretending to mail a parcel. Incidentally, the parcel could not fit through the parcel window and the employee had to open the door to receive it. Taking their opportunity, one of the robbers drew a handgun and overpowered the employee, forcing her into the strong room where they tied her up. The armed robbers then stole cash to the value of N$ 20 132-25 as well as the employee's Samsung Galaxy J2, valued at N$ 2000. The victim later managed to free herself and alerted the Police. At the time of going to press the armed robbers were still at large. None of the stolen items had been recovered either. The police are requesting the public to assist in tracing the suspects.

Two containers have been placed in Arandis, two in Keetmanshoop, and one in Rundu. The Rotary Clubs of Swakopmund and Lüderitz serve as HOST CLUBS for this Rotary Global Grant project which means that they have to support and monitor the project locally”.

World Fraud Awareness Day FNB warns of identity theft and account take-over 21 November: As part of World Fraud Awareness Week, FNB Namibia wishes to educate customers about identity theft and subsequent account take-overs which seem to have become more prevalent. Ingrid Kahona-Katjiukua, FNB Namibia Forensics: “The definition of account takeover is obtaining a legitimate user's details to take over their online accounts, usually enabling monetary theft. For financial institutions fraudulent money movements and other malicious activities affect our customers directly but can also be a sign of money laundering.” Cyber criminals can use various pieces of personal data to initiate an account takeover, including email address, full names, or a birth date. It doesn't have to be sensitive information like a bank account number. They can obtain this information through phishing scams, malware, social media, and other practices. Any business or consumer could be a target. “We wish to alert our customers about this type of fraud and offer several steps consumers can take to protect themselves from attack.” Kahona-Katjiukua says to consider the following precautions: Keep track of your bank sms notifications. Should you

suspect any fraud contact the bank immediately. Avoid using the same password on multiple accounts. By using the same password, if one account is compromised, it potentially makes it easier for a cybercriminal to gain access to additional accounts that use the same login information. Change passwords often. Stay one step ahead of cybercriminals by updating passwords periodically. Be sure to use complex passwords (passwords using upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters). Limit outsider access

to social media accounts. Cybercriminals mine social media for personal information they can use to exploit your accounts. Change the settings on your accounts so only people to whom you grant access can see your social media activity. Keep an eye on your financial accounts. Watch your banking and credit card statements for suspicious activity. Use online banking when possible to monitor transactions more frequently. If you see a transaction you don't recognise, contact us immediately.

The Chairperson of the Bankers Association of Namibia (BAN), Vetumbuavi Mungunda advises that the industry will phase out cheques as a payment instrument by June 2019. “This means that Namibian banks will no longer be issuing and/or accepting any cheque after that date and that individual banks may have their own cut off dates for cheques leading up to next year.” Mungunda, however, added that all banks have many alternative and more effective means to transact that are safer and cheaper that customers can make use of.“A large portion of cheque users are from specific industries that have cheque payments built into their business operations, many of which would benefit from moving away from Cheque payments in terms of efficiency, and risk,” explains Mungunda. “One must consider the administration process, storage of physical paper that is required for cheques as well as the waiting period for a cheque to clear. This is in contrast with electronic payments which can be done in minutes, securely.” “Moving away from cheques as a means of receiving or making payment altogether can go a long way to reduce costs and increase convenience for customers and businesses alike, and I encourage customers to approach their individual banks for details” concludes Mungunda.

Domestic related issues are also on the rise in Mondesa and Kuisebmond. Alcohol abuse is the root cause of most domestic violence cases, but also other violent crimes like assault, murder and also robberies and theft. “People do not speak up until things get bad or when it is too late for the police to protect them. Nampol advises the community to protect each other and report Gender Based Violence or any other forms of domestic violence crimes. “If you see your neighbour is being abused by their partner, come to us and report”, said the Station Commander of Mondesa Police Station Hilma Kandali Uwanga.

Walvis Bay STEM Fair hosts Diabetes Fundraiser Diabetes has recently become a major issue and many people do not understand the severity of it, especially in children. Therefore the Walvis Bay Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair, under the leadership of Anastacia de Klerk, has started a Diabetic Awareness campaign called the Diabetes Project. The campaign aimed at helping children in Walvis Bay who do not have medical aid so that they can have access to the proper medical treatment. Type 1 diabetes can't be prevented, and there is no real way to predict who will get it. Once a person has Type 1 diabetes, it does not go away and requires lifelong treatment. Kids and teens with Type 1 diabetes depend on daily insulin injections or an insulin pump to control their blood glucose levels and this can be very expensive. De Klerk, who is a diabetic herself, said that medical treatment as well as the medication and management of this chronic disease can be a very expensive thing. 'Therefore we would just like to extend a helping hand to children whose parents cannot afford the medical costs involved with managing this disease. In future we would also like to educate principals and teachers at the various schools about type 1diabetes and also how to help children with type 1 diabetes in emergency situations. We have sent out surveys to all the schools in Walvis Bay to make sure how many school- going learners are affected by this disease as well as how many schools need to be educated about it. We would also like to start to raise awareness in Walvis Bay about type 1 and 2 diabetes.' The Diabetes Project committee consisted of teachers from various schools and parents within the Walvis Bay community and the following events were organised in order to raise funds for these children:

Denim for Diabetes Civvies Day on Friday, 9 November School learners and teachers were encouraged to wear 'Denim for Diabetes' for a contribution of N$5 per learner and N$10 per teacher which was donated towards the campaign. The following schools took part: Flamingo Primary School, Kuisebmond Primary School, Duinesig Combined School, Flamingo Secondary School and Hokey Pokey Kindergarten.

Gebra Flowers Sale on Friday, 16 November the STEM A Gebra Flower and key holders with the symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children as well as a pamphlet containing information about type 1 and 2 diabetes, were sold for N$40 to different companies, institutions and individuals in Walvis Bay. Welwitschia hospital bought the most flowers and the following institutions also supported the initiative: First National Bank, Standard Bank, Bank Windhoek, Anna - Mart Physio, Hands on health - Dr Kelly Harris, Walvis Bay Library, Namib Marine Ser-vices, Yvette Stemmet, Carmen Forbes, Claudia Ramos, Various members of the public as well as various schools. The fundraising was sponsored by CNK Dental Practice, Flower Box, Shalom Flowers and SDP Groupe. There are still key holders for sale for N$20 each. 7TH Annual National Fish Consumption Day Raises N$752,000 The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT), raised over N$752 000 (Seven Hundred and Fifty Two Thousand Namibia Dollars) at the 7th Annual National Fish Consumption Day, held in Opuwo in the Kunene Region last weekend. The Annual National Fish Consumption Day is held in two parts, a Gala Dinner, to raise funds for the donations of Scholarly equipment to the hosting region followed by the Market Day. The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resource, Honourable Bernhard Esau was the keynote speaker at both the gala dinner and the market day. Speaking at these events, the Minister noted that the fisheries industry provides a business opportunity for residents of Opuwo and the entire Kunene region at large. “I urge the fishing industry to set up enterprise development on fisheries in the Kunene region so that we can have fish shops, cold storage and processing facilities in this region”. According to the minister, Kunene residents can participate directly in the industry through supplies and logistics, hence he urged the fishing industry to explore ways to enhance the participation of Kunene region inhabitants in the sector. The Minister also reiterated the importance of the nutritional and economic benefits of eating Namibian fish. He stated that the national target for fish consumption stands at 21.4 kg per person per

year, translating into 50,000 metric tonnes of fish worth over N$500 million. “We are now at 50% of this target and if only 5% of this fish target could happen in Kunene region, it would mean an injection of about N$25 million in the region's economy which would greatly address poverty and inequality in the area”, the Minister intimated. Speaking at the same occasion, Mrs Suzan Ndjaleka, the Chairperson of NFCPT, revealed that NFCPT is now operating sixteen retail shops in twelve regions as part of its quest to make fish accessible in the regions, noting that more and more Namibians are demanding a variety of fish. According to her, this presents an opportunity for the private sector to partner the NFCPT to meet the unmet growing demand for fish and fishery products in the country. The NFCPT distributed over 700 metric tonnes of fish during the 2017/2018 period compared to 5877 metric tonnes in 2016/2017. This translated into revenue of over N$87 million in

2017/2018 compared to over N$73 million in 2016/2017, the NFCPT Chairperson noted. Mrs Ndjaleka further stated that this year marks the 7th National Fish Consumption Day as it continues to cement the push for food security, whilst ploughing back into the communities as part of the social responsibility initiatives. The seven-a-side soccer tournament finals held on the same day saw teams competing from schools within all the constituencies in the Kunene region. The event saw the Orumana Combined School walking away with the first prize consisting of gold medals and soccer equipment worth N$5 000, while the Etanga Primary School received silver medals and soccer equipment worth N$3,000. The bronze medals went to the Versteende Woud Primary School with N$1,500 worth of soccer equipment, amongst other prizes. Each school team further received fish compliments of Tunacor Fisheries Ltd and Novanam Ltd. The 8th Annual National Fish Consumption Day 2019, will be held in the Oshikoto Region.

Semi-sub oil rig expected off Walvis Bay on 4 December

The semi-submersible oil rig Deepsea Stavanger is expected to arrive off Walvis Bay on 4 December this year. The rig belongs to Odfjell Drilling and is underway to South Africa for an exploration drilling contract worth N$770 million that has to be honoured by the latest April next year. The drilling contract was awarded by Total E&P South Africa and involves the drilling of one well. The rig returns to Norway after the drilling contract is executed to resume exploration drilling there. The rig has been off the Liberian coast yesterday and is making steady progress towards Walvis Bay.

In drei Folgen dürfen Sie hier eine Kurzgeschichte aus Ilse Gräfin von Bredows Büchlein “Des Hauses Ehr ist Gastlichkeit” lesen. Mit unnachahmlichem Humor erinnert sich die bekannte Autorin von “ K a r t o ff e l n m i t Stippe” an die Erlebnisse mit Gästen in ihrer Kindheit auf dem Land. Denn dort, wo Fuchs und Hase sich gute Nacht sagten, waren Besucher eine willkommene Abwechslung. Folge 1 Gäste gehörten im Sommer zum Haus wie Fliegen in den Kuhstall. Es gab Frühaufsteher, die bereits vor dem Frühstück zwischen Garten und See unruhig hin und her pendelten und Vater beim Baden störten. Eine schon ziemlich taube Tante setzte sich sogar in den Kahn, um ihm beim Schwimmen zuzusehen, während Vater bei 17 Grad Wassertemperatur sie verzweifelt umkreiste und ihr vergeblich klarzumachen suchte, dass er gern herauskommen würde, aber keine Badehose anhabe. Es gab Langschläfer, die den Kaffee erst zu sich nahmen, wenn bereits die Kartoffeln fürs Mittagessen abgegossen wurden. Manche konnten nur bei völliger Dunkelheit Ruhe finden, und verschandelte Tapeten erinnerten an ihre Versuche, sich die kleinsten Ritzen zwischen Gardine und Fensterrand mit Stecknadeln abzudichten. Andere schliefen bei weit geöffneten Fenstern, und Gewitterregen ergoss sich auf den 200 Jahre alten Sekretär. Aber Gäste waren heilige Kühe. Sie durften eben alles - auch die Wurst aushöhlen, das Ei mit dem Messer köpfen, sich Marmelade und Butter auf den Kuchen schmieren und noch vor dem Nachtisch rauchen. Tante Barbara war

eine solche heilige Kuh, und zwar eine besonders anstrengende. Sie war eine rundliche, behände Person mittleren Alters, die vor Unternehmungslust und Vitalität wie ein Foxterrier ständig zu vibrieren schien. Sie schwamm mühelos über den See und wieder zurück, was wir uns nur trauten, wenn jemand im Kahn neben uns herfuhr. Mit Tante Barbara eine Radtour zu machen bedeutete, auch bergauf zügig in die Pedale treten zu müssen. Und wenn wir uns nach einer ihrer Unternehmungen gerade mit hängender Zunge in den nächsten Sessel geworfen hatten, rief sie schon wieder:” Und was können wir jetzt mal machen?”

“Meine liebe Bärbel ist ein rechter Quirl!” pflegte ihr verstorbener Mann resigniert zu sagen. Der Ahnungslose hatte sich in sie verliebt und auch mit ihr verlobt, als ihr Temperament durch eine gerade überstandene Lungenentzündung wohltuend gebremst war. Tante wusste wenig mit sich anzufangen und wollte mit Picknicks, Nachbarbesuchen und Kahnfahrten ständig amüsiert werden. Bei schlechtem Wetter wuselte sie mit dem fragenden Ruf “Gertrud?” von Zimmer zu Zimmer, so dass wir jedes Mal unser Spiel unterbrechen und uns, wie es der Anstand erfordert, erheben mussten.... Swakopmund (sk) Arthritis ist eine Gelenkentzündung von der jedes Gelenk im Körper befallen sein kann - selbst der Kiefer. Tritt die Entzündung plötzlich auf, wird von einer akuten Arthritis gesprochen. Eine länger andauernde und schubweise auftretende Gelenkentzündung nennt man chronische Arthritis. Je nach Ursache gibt es verschiedene Formen, auf die ich hier nicht näher eingehen will. Die rheumatoide Arthritis ist die Form von Gelenkentzündungen, die am häufigsten vorkommt. Die Gelenke und das Gewebe werden aufgrund einer fehlgesteuerten körpereigenen Abwehr vom Immunsystem angegriffen und zerstört. Frauen sind wesentlich häufiger von der rheumatoiden Arthritis betroffen als Männer. Die Krankheit tritt meistens an den Händen auf. Typische Anzeichen für diese Form der Gelenkentzündung sind Schmerzen in den Fingergelenken

und eine Gelenksteifheit am Morgen. Wer einer Gelenkentzündung vorbeugen möchte, sollte für regelmäßige Bewegung der Gelenke sorgen. Wichtig ist, dass auf eine gleichmäßige Belastung der Gelenke geachtet wird. Dazu bieten sich die Bewegungsformen Spazierengehen, Schwimmen, Gymnastik oder Fahrradfahren an. Verletzungen sollten immer rechtzeitig behandelt werden, um einer Entzündung vorzubeugen. Wie kann man weiterhin konservativ gegen die vielen Formen der Arthritis vorgehen? Muskatnuss schmeckt nicht nur im Essen gut, es ist auch ein wunderbares Hausmittel gegen Gelenkschmerzen. Da Muskat schlecht auf der Haut hält, kann man das Pulver mit etwas Creme mischen und auf die betroffene Stelle auftragen. Muskat besitzt unter anderem eine schmerzstillende Wirkung. Hilfreiche Nährstoffe sind u.a.: Omega-3-Fettsäuren (Fettreiche Fische wie Lachs, Schellfisch, Makrele und Thunfisch, Leinsamen oder Leinöl, Walnüsse und Rapsöl), Zink (Austern, Hering, Rindfleisch, Kalbsleber, Haferflocken, Eier, Erbsen, Käse, Sojabohnen), Vitamin E (Vollkornprodukte, Mandeln, Oliven- und Sonnenblumenöl) und Pro-biotika. The FNB Sages The First National Bank SAGES Inter Branch tournament for 2018 ended at Rossmund in Swakopmund. Senior Golfers from all corners of Namibia and also from as far away as the Cape came together for the 33rd staging of the Sages Inter Branch Golf Tournament that is held on an annual basis at the Rossmund Golf Course. Weather conditions throughout the week were perfect for golf and the course was in excellent condition thanks to many hours of hard work from the ground staff. Things were a bit hectic at times with 80 to 90 golfers per day taking to the fairways under the new handicap/sloping systems – with new look tee boxes and strokes on most of the holes – causing havoc with some of the old brains. The anchor sponsor FNB together with co-sponsors L R Parts, Shoprite/Checkers, Thovo Therm. Namibian Breweries ensured that all the golfers had a fantastic week of competition and rivalry. The clubhouse had that buzzing feeling every afternoon as the scores came in and were added together to give the team scores. Everything went down to the wire as scores were close – Friday it was a case of who could hold their cool. The week's activities culminated in a Gala Dinner and Prize Giving Function on Friday evening where the golfers together with their spouses and partners could enjoy the last few hours chatting and laughing prior to saying farewell

Rossmund Ladies Open Championship Wilna Bredenhann makes it three times in a row at the 2018 Rossmund Ladies Open Golf Championship. The event was sponsored by the Swakop Plaza Hotel with Michael Ludeke for the fourth year in succession and secures the final round of the 2018 Medal Master sponsored by Novanam.

Once again it was a busy weekend at the Rossmund Golf Course. They hosted the 2018 Rossmund Ladies Open Championship sponsored for the fourth year in succession by the Swakopmund Plaza Hotel together with the Final Round of the 2018 Medal Master sponsored by Novanam. Play for the Ladies commenced on Saturday morning around 8 o'clock. The course was well prepared and in excellent condition. The weather conditions were a little chilly at first with a northern wind, but later in the day the temperature increased, and the day was just perfect. The defending champion Wilna Bredenhann and rival Wilma van der Merwe both carded a 79 gross for the day. In the Stableford Division all eyes were on Tiekie De Wet who scored 37 pts, giving her a four-shot lead after day one. Wilna Bredenhann managed to post a 2-shot lead to defend her title for the third year running. Tiekie produced some steady golf equaling the same score as on day one to give her a well earned win in the Stableford Division for the second year in a row. The General Manager of Swakop Plaza Hotel, Johan Kok handed over the prizes to the winners and confirmed that their sponsorship will be on going. The President of NALGU Brenda Lens thanked Swakop Plaza Hotel for their continuous support for Ladies Golf and for making the tournament a huge success. Brenda also thanked the Rossmund Team for their hard work and thanked all the players for participating. Michael finished the day with a 77nett to securing the title while the best golf for the day was played by Theo Haimbondi with an excellent 72nett and George Murasiki produced the only 2-club on Number 16. It was great to have Michael Tordesillas in the field and to officiate at the final prize-giving- having provided the field with an excellent lunch/halfway house.
