First 50 000 tons of salt exported from Walvis Bay to the United States A cargo ship with its first consignment of 50 000 tons of salt destined for export to the United States of America sails from Walvis Bay today. A quayside ceremony held in port last night celebrated this historic moment in which the first ever Namibian produced salt is exported to the Amercas. In a press statement Walvis Bay Salt Refiners says the market for salt is growing beyond the traditional Afri-can markets. It took several years of intense marketing in both North America and Latin America and hard work now start to pay off. This consignment of 50 000 is not the last shipment of salt
to an American market. With the Managing Director of WBSR, Mr André Snyman, at the helm an expansion program at the company's salt mine concluded in 2016. It saw a production increase from 700 000 tons of salt annually to one million tons annually. WBSR's salt mine is largest of its kind in sub-Saharan
Africa. Snyman added although production was enhanced by the expansion of the salt mine, the company will not let its guard down in the market and will continue to improve production efficiencies, quality control and maintain consistent and responsive to ever changing customer demands. Itewa is a cleaner working at various businesses and residences in Swakopmund's Libertina Amathila Street, but in his spare time he is the "honorary Minister of Education". "Erongo must go back to the top. I will be strict with headmasters", Itewa said to namib times this week. He added: "Teachers and headmaster

thanks to Itewa. "Things cannot go on like this. I will start at the top and talk to headmasters, then to the teachers and then to the pupils. I don't play anymore", Itewa continues. He voiced his concern that there are only some schools in Erongo consistently producing top results every year. In this regard he underlined Namib High School (NHS). "But we cannot have some schools working hard, while others do nothing and ride on the success of the top performers. This must change", he vowed. "Imagine you live in a house with ten people and only four work? The rest live off the money of those working. It is not acceptable", Itewa continues. Since the establishment of the Erongo Education Fund the initiative has supported countless pupils all over the region. The fund boasts close to N$1 million now. "This year things will change. I will not just give money to people who need it, but I will buy the equipment's they require and give it to them instead", he explains. "I do not give money away freely." Although Itewa is a poor man, employed as a cleaner for 35 years already, he has not pocketed a single cent, nor have any of his children benefitted from the fund. "There's no 'boetie-boetie' (cronyism) business here. I only give money to those who work hard and have the results to show for it."
Although the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) is concerned over two lions that are suspected to have killed off 172 heads of sheep in the vicinity of the Brandberg mountain in the Erongo region, the ministry has also expressed "shock" over the fact that livestock is being kept in a tourism business area.
Five-year old suffocates as house burns down Erwin Leuschner
A five-year old boy died from smoke inhalation on Friday at midnight (19 January) at his home located in Geelhout Street at Arandis. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the boy was asleep when a fire started in the same room and then spread to the kitchen. "The deceased suffocated", Iikuyu revealed. The cause of fire is at this stage unknown. The boy was identified as Teotorun //Narib. The boy's body was taken to Walvis Bay Police Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The police is investigation a case of unnatural death.
In a statement issued on Tuesday last week the ministry confirmed that during the night of 15 January a total of 172 sheep were killed in the vicinity of the Brandberg White Lady Lodge. "Our preliminary investigations show that two lions have been spotted in the vicinity and are suspected to have killed the sheep", the statement reads. The killed livestock form part of a flock of sheep consisting of between 600 and 700 animals which are owned and kept by the owners of the lodge. "While we are concerned by so many sheep being killed by wild animals in one night, we are shocked about lodge operators keeping livestock in a tourism business area and very close to their lodge", the statement continues. And: "This is a wildlife habitat area where lions should be roaming." The ministry further states that desert adapted lions have established themselves in the Brandberg area over the years and that they have
come from the Ugab River system. The Brandberg area is a good wildlife habitat and tourism activities are on the increase. According to the preliminary investigation by the ministry, the lodge owners were assisted by "some people" in the area to construct lion proof kraals for the protection of the livestock. "These kraals have been built to low standard and poor quality which could not prevent this incident", it states. Therefore, the ministry advises that all predator proof kraals should be built with specific standards and specifications. Over the past few years there has been an increase of human-wildlife-conflict incidences, especially in the north-western part of the country, where desert adapted lions still roam freely. "High rainfall variability associated with the recently experienced drought influence the distribution of predators and prey species, as well as the movements of people and their livestock, and we see conflict inci-
dences in areas where they are not expected", MET states. The ministry therefore calls on the public to be vigilant and report any sighting of these predators in areas where they are not expected. "However, it is the responsibility of all citizens, farmers, organisations and organs of State that engage in land uses that can be affected by human wildlife conflict to take measures to avoid such conflict", the statement continues. The ministry wishes to inform the public that this incident should not be linked to the lions that the Ministry translocated to the Erongo Mountain Rhino Sanctuary. Those lions are still in the Erongo Mountains and the capturing operation is currently underway. If the Ministry intends to address or take measures regarding the keeping of livestock in tourism business areas, particular in this case, is not mentioned in the statement.

Miracle Dachshund “Jazi” found after being lost in the desert for more than four days Erwin Leuschner
An emotional reunion: Jazi, the one-yearold Dachshund, went missing in the dunes between Swakopmund and Langstrand on Sunday (14 January) in the afternoon. After a widespread search by several members of the community, Jazi was finally found and reunited with her owner. After being missing in the desert for more than four days, the dog is back in the loving care of her owner. "This is unbelievable. It's indescribable", Susan Fick told namib times recently. She cannot stop hugging the little rascal who gave everybody such a fright when he got lost. "Jazi" went missing on the dunes between Swakopmund and Langstrand at one of the off road recreational areas. It was at about 14:30. Although Susan and her family searched for their pet the entire rest of the day and again the next day, "Jazi" was nowhere to be found. Swakopmund drone pilot Bernt Bruns conducted daily aerial searches over the area. Similarly, Mike Böttger of Scenic Air also conducted aerial searches, whilst many Swakopmund residents searched for the Dachshund on foot. The Quadbike Tour Company Desert EXplorers also joined the search. Some of their guides searched until sundown. It was finally Ulla Burd that spotted "Jazi" the first time late on Wednesday afternoon. "Jazi" was extremely skittish and bolted as soon as she saw any human activity. The search on Wednes-
day continued late into the night – without success. Then at last: "We spotted "Jazi" not far from where she initially went missing", explained Bruns to namib times. But once again, the dog ran off, which prompted Bruns to contact Desert EXplorers again. Together with guides they followed the tracks and finally caught up with "Jazi" close to the Amphitheatre dune in the vicinity of the backroad. This time "Jazi" was captured.She had crossed the entire dune belt from west to east and that with no water or food and out alone in the desert wilderness where many dangers are lurking for small animals. "Jazi" was in a surprisingly good condition. She went for a quick check-up at the Swakop Vet Clinic before she was sent home to rest. Susan Fick and her family, who were on holiday at the coast at the time, had in the meantime returned to Windhoek where their kids had to go back to school. Susan travelled to Swakopmund where she was reunited with "Jazi". It was an emotional reunion. "I am unbelievably grateful to everybody who assisted with the search. It is amazing how the whole community came together and helped in the search", she said.

Clayton Links (28) made an appearance on a charge of malicious damage to property. Matter remanded to 15 February and accused remains in custody.

Andries Geingob (47) appeared on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. Accused freed on bail of N$2 000 and his next appearance in court is on 26 February. 17 January Martin Humphries (21) was found guilty on a charge of dealing in cocaine, alternatively possession of cocaine (July 2016). Case postponed to 24 January for a bail application pending his appeal to his conviction. Ananias Nikanor (24) was found guilty of the possession of stolen property. He was sentenced to twelve months in jail. Allen Yue failed to make an appearance in court. His warrant of arrest remains in force and Yue is now wanted countrywide by the Police. Abraham Amadhila (21) appeared on a charge of theft (September 2017). Matter postponed to for continuation of the trial. The accused remains free on bail of N$2 000. Samuel Reinhold (24) and Simeon Phillipus (24) appeared on a charge of theft from employer (October 2017). The matter was remanded to 6 March and the accused are free on bail of N$2 500 and N$1 500 respectively. Shaun Nanjembo (18) Case of theft withdrawn as the accused served a sentence of community service before the matter was put on trial. On Sunday two men committed suicide by hanging at the coast. The incidents took place about eight hours apart, the first hanging was in Walvis Bay at 10:30 while the second took place in Swakopmund later in the afternoon at 18:45. It is alleged Castor Sanagai (30) hanged himself with a rope from the roof in his room where he was renting at house no 2633/10, Malgas Street, Namport suburb, in Tutaleni, Kuisebmond. According to the police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the deceased was discovered by a friend who is renting a room in the same house. “The reason for him to commit suicide is he apparently told a friend that he did not think he will make it to the end of this year”, explained Iikuyu. He further said a suicide note was found at the scene. The deceased's next of kin were informed. On that same day, an unidentified man who was believed to be between 3050-years of age committed suicide by hanging on Sunday afternoon around 18:45, at Matutura suburb in Mondesa. “An unidentified black in complexion male person between the age of 30-50 was found hanging on a rope from a wooden roof outside an unoccupied house at Mass Housing houses, at Matutura suburb, behind DRC location. Two security officials made the discovery and notified the Police”, said Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu. According to him, no suicide note, or any form of identification of the deceased, were found at the scene. The body was taken to Walvis Bay Police Mortuary for post mortem examination. The next of kin of the deceased is still to be traced.

New building at new CHAIN close to completion
Plans to construct a new building for CHAIN (Children with Handicaps Action in Namibia) have been on the cards since 2010. These plans were fast-tracked after the Rössing Foundation announced the intention to integrate the old, small building on its premises into the training sector, says Lore Bohm (project manager of “Kleine Engel” and partner of CHAIN) In exchange the Rössing Foundation generously donated an open piece of land to CHAIN which is located close to the existing centre. The plans for the new buildings were finally approved after some bureaucratic delay and the groundbreaking ceremony officially took place in May 2017. Thanks to the generous donations of three main sponsors from Germany a large portion of the funds required was be generated. The “Kleine Prinz” from Warendorf will finance for all sanitary requirements. The “Kleine Engel” in cooperation with CHAIN will pay for special facilities including kitchen and classrooms. The organisation “Dornburg hilft” will pay for outdoor facilities as well as the playground. Most of the money required has already been transferred. CHAIN has also received more donations from Germany and Swakopmund for which the
organization is extremely grateful. While CHAIN is looking positively at the future the organization still requires more funds, as unexpected costs will most likely arise as the new building is being finalized. In addition CHAIN will be able to look after more children with special needs at the new premises. More funds will be required to keep CHAIN up and running and pay for monthly bills, including water, electricity and transport. The current budget of N$30 000 per month pays six employees and 20 children and will not be enough in the future anymore. More assistance will be necessary in future. Lore Bohm has been supporting CHAIN since 2004 and she is willing to continue and help, especially in the development of the new premises. She wishes to thank everybody in advance who will also render assistance and support Swakopmund children who require special needs.

Gully shark carcass washes up at Mile 8
A carcass of an adult Spotted gully shark, also known as a sloephaai (Afrikaans), washed out close to Mile 8 over the weekend. The shark had no visible injuries, making the cause of death unknown. Gully sharks, as well as other shark species including Bronze whalers, are favourite sport fishing species along the coast. Anglers are urged to practice only catch and release fishing, in order to preserve sharks. It is also important to handle sharks with care when caught and to release it back into the water as soon as possible to prevent injuries or even death.

Grade 1 leaners will join Hanganeni's platoon system on Wednesday Sharlien Tjambari
A total of 307 Grade 1 learners started their school career in the school hall of Atlantic Junior Secondary school yesterday. This, according to the Ministry of Education Arts and Culture, is just an interim solution for these learners who did not get a place at schools at the start of the school academic year 2018. Mrs Emma Iipinge, the Principal of Atlantic Junior Secondary School, explained to namib times the learners will only be accommodated at her school until today (Tuesday). According to Iipinge, the learners will then all move to Hanganeni Primary School, starting Wednesday (24 January) and they have no other choice but to join Hanganeni's platoon system. The platoon system means these children will be receiving afternoon schooling until such time seven classrooms currently under construction are completed. These classroom are constructed with funds sourced from Namport. These are all the learners who started their Grade 1 school career at Atlantic Junior Secondary's school “All 307 learners will fit in nine classes, but Namport is only builhall ding seven classrooms, which means there will still be a lack of two classrooms”, explained Iipinge.
Man forgets he drove his car to town – reports it stolen A local businessman caused a small stir in Walvis Bay on Friday afternoon, after he reported his vehicle stolen from his business premises. The report resulted in different law enforcement agencies keeping a lookout for the vehicle, after a description and registration number were provided. Only a while after reporting the matter, the businessman realised to his embarrassment that he drove in his vehicle to a nearby hardware store. Being used to usually walking the small distance between his business and town, he forgot he drove with his vehicle to the hardware store and instead walked the distance back to his business. When his spouse, who is also involved in the business, asked him where the vehicle is, he said it should be parked outside in front of the business. When realising the vehicle is not there, he became alarmed and as the news spread of the stolen vehicle, more and more people joined the search. Only to hear a while later, much to their amusement, the vehicle was never stolen, but rather only “temporarily misplaced”. Note: the name of the businessman is withheld, as the incident was rather embarrassing and this article is not intended to cause him any further discomfort.

The Brave Warriors achievements at the ongoing 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) finals in Morocco has united the nation through their teamwork and determination, says Youth and Sport Permanent Secretary Emma Katema-Gaomas. Katema-Gaomas and her Ministry's Deputy Minister Agnes Tjongarero has been with the team since the start of their campaign at the finals in Marrakech were they won their first two games to qualify for the quarterfinals and she is not surprised by the results. "This team has been hard at work since day one. From Windhoek to Tunis and now in Morocco and together they forget all their difference and work as a team for a common cause of representing their country and winning and they have achieved that tremendously. We rejoice in their success as Namibians and it proves that sports is the biggest social builder. Reaching the quarterfinals with a game to spare is no easy feat", Katema-Gaomas states. Katema-Gaomas, who was appointed to her position in September 2017, reveals that her following of the team has provided an overwhelming insight of how sports
works which can only help her make informed decisions in the future. "For me this was a worthwhile assessment and after the N$ 10 million we gave to the NFA late last year I now feel that we should have given more. Sometimes you say reduce the training days and/or venue but being here I have seen it all and what it takes for a team to make it. It's hard work and sacrifices both financially and physically. Everyone one here is doing his part from the players to the coach and the other support staff", KatemaGaomas says. The Permanent Secretary also revealed that the national sports categorization will be concluded soon and act as a guide for resources allocation. "We need to allocate resources according to sports code popularity and achievement to streamline social integration and cohesion. The categorization will help us to create a winning nation in sports and bring more unity and sense of pride to our people", explains Katema-Gaomas.
Race to Cape Town 2018 This year the rules of The Race to Cape Town have been changed, to try to give more members a realistic chance of winning and to reward players who have performed the best during certain stages. It will be based on a Fedex cup type of system as follows: · From 13 January 2017 to 25 August 2018 all members participate. · From 1 September to 29 September only the top 40 and ties participate. · From 6 October to 27 October only the top 20 and ties, and 2 wildcards participate. · From 3 November to 24 November only the top 10 and ties participate. · On the 1 December at the Winner of winners the top 4 qualifying members play for the tickets. Points are awarded as follows: for the period 13 Jan to 25 Aug A.1 point for attending a Saturday competition in addition to any points earned below. Players attending sanctioned NGF, NAGU. NALGU, Junior, Sages, Senior- and Interclub events will also earn 1 point. B. Position points :5 points for the winner, 4 for 2nd etc. until 1 point for 5th place. With a betterball or team event all the players will earn the same amount of points. C. If 2 or more players have the same scores then the

Determining the winner of the Race to Cape Town 1 Dec 2018 A. If you are one of the 4 qualifiers and cannot play in the Winner of winner's completion then you are not legible to win the prize. No one will replace you in the final. B. The 4 players will be drawn in the same fourball and the format will be a medal competition with the winner being the lowest net scorer. C. In the case of a tie after 18 holes, then there will be a sudden death playoff. D. The playoff will commence on hole number one and the players will take their strokes as indicated on the scorecard. Please also note the following: Participation pints will be awarded on Walvis Bay Open or Closed Championships should the field not be limited and all payers who entered not making the cut. No position points will be allocated. No points are awarded for Fund Raisers and Corporate days. Any Player that is playing a NAGU/NGF/NALGU/NJGF event which is on the official program on a foreign course, eg. Rossmund, Windhoek etc. will receive 1 Point for that Day. Players will be identified on the official entry list or competition report. Any Player travelling with a WBGC Team to a foreign Course will receive 1 Point; eg. travelling to Tsumeb. List of Players will be provided by the organizer. If there is a competition with a hidden partner, the points will be allocated on an individual basis. Due to the possibility of decimals in the scoring system, these decimals will be taken into account in the case of count outs. SCORE CARDS: If your card is not signed by yourself and your Marker – you get no points! Make sure that your Marker hands in his card. Points are only allocated for the Player on the card, not the Marker. If any person is disqualified or hands in a No Return, then he will get no points. Please note that no exceptions will be made.

Namibia Under 19’s The Namibia Under 19 cricket team that is participating at the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand off to a tough start. The Namibian team ended last in their group as they lost all their group games. The Namibian Under 19 National team lost to: Bangladesh Under 19s with 87 runs England Under 19s with 8 wickets Canada Under 19s with 4 wickets To make maters worst the Namibian boys lost the Plate Quarter-final 2 against Zimbabwe with 7 wickets. The Namibian team will play for the 13th Place Play-off Semi-Final 2 on Wednesday 24 January at Lincoln No. 3, Christchurch, New Zealand.
