People reacted with great disgust yesterday over a video that went viral on social media showing people jumping on a Hump back whale as it lies dying in the shallow water just north of the naval base at Walvis Bay. Crowds gathered at the site since Wednesday where this Hump back whale stranded between the Independence Beach and the new oil terminal. The whale had an injury which impaired the movement of one of its pectoral fins. Several attempts on Wednesday to pull the whale to deeper water was only temporarily successful as it kept on returning to the shallow water as it new it was nearing the end of its life. “What is wrong with our people”, dozens of people asked shortly after the video was posted on Namib Times. The fact that the whale was still alive angered social media users and peoples' conduct were criticised and condemned in the strongest terms. At the time of going to press yesterday afternoon the Namibia Dolphin Project was awaiting approval from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and also the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources to euthanise the whale and to pull the carcass to a location where its decay would not hinder the public. The Namibian Police was dispatched to the site of the whale stranding yesterday and cordoned off the area in order for the people to stay away from the whale and for either nature or the mercy of man to take its course.

As Heroe’s Day long weekend is here - stay safe on our roads The motorist public reported several incidents on the B2 coastal roads Walvis Bay to Langstrand section disregarding the new traffic lines added to the road’s surface. Some motorists overtake on the solid lines on blind hills. “When there were no lines everyone was complaining over the danger it poses. Now that the lines are there at last, some people drive thus if these lines are not existing”, a motorist said who phoned in to report a driver that caused a near collision. Many people are also speeding on this segment of the road, disregarding the fact that a 100km/h speed limit is in place. “I urge our motorists to be careful on the road. To arrive a few minutes later at your end destination cannot be more important than being swept away in a deadly car accident or worse causing the deaths of other people”, said a second motorist.

Continued from page 1 Namibia's railways was 120 years old yesterday, Thursday 22 August 2019. [On the front page today’s edition the historic picture of Hope working on the small railway line between Walvis Bay and Plum]. The day 22 August is regarded as the birth of Namibia's railways. On this day in 1899 a small locomotive arrived here from Stoke-on-Trent in England, aboard the British barque, Primera. It was still the years of the lighters. Ships would anchor in the bay and these small cargo boats (lighters) moved people and cargo to and thro between land and ship. The Primera was a majestic with three, tall masts. During the same time the Cape Government extended the tramway between the settlement of Walvis Bay and Plum (where Dany Construction's quarry is today) as a short railway. The small locomotive was named “Hope” and put into service on this line. Initial intentions were for this railway line to carry trade goods that arrived by ship at Walvis Bay to Plum for further transport into the interior. The German South West African Government at the were also advancing with the railway line between Windhoek and Swakopmund (construction started in 1897) and the idea was to cash in on this opportunity by carting cargo from Plum to Swakopmund. However, the short railway line never became profitable. When the German South West African Government commenced construction of the Otavi-Tsumeb line early in the 1900's, following the discovery of vast copper deposits at Tsumeb, the short railway line was soon obsolete and left over to the sweeping desert winds and sand. Hope continued to serve on the short railway line, or at least what was left of it after huge swaths were covered by sand. It mainly transported waste out of the settlement, shifted cargo around in the port and locals used it for weekend outings into the desert. Hope was retired when the Cape gauge railway line between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund opened in 1915. This line was constructed by the invading Union of South African Forces during the SWA Campaign. Troops landed in Walvis Bay on Christmas Day 1914 and as they advanced on Swakopmund constructed a railway line to assist carrying war cargo forward. This line opened in March 1915 and served as a feeder line for military equipment and troops as the South West Africa Campaign moved inland and the eventual defeat of the German forces at Khorab at Otavi on 1 July 1915 (the Germans surrendered on 9 July with the signing of the Treaty of Khorab. Hope stood dormant on a side track in the port for many years and was eventually renovated by the South African Railways (SAR) and plinthed in front of the Windhoek railway station in the 1940's. The locomotive was returned to the Walvis Bay railway station and plinthed there in 1961. Very soon the coastal weather extremes again started to eat away at its structural integrity. It was eventually accommodated in a small building with big glass windows – as seen today in front of the railway station. When you drive past the railway station, take some time and take a peep through the large windows [it is advisable to take a cloth along as the windows are dirty] and see what Hope looks like and remember this is the flag bearer of Namibia's railway history. Perhaps one day if TransNamib comes to its full potential Hope will be restored to glory. And we have full confidence in the current CEO Mr. Johny Smith that he would wake the national rail carrier from its decades long hibernation. Until then, Hope’s final resting place will remain that small building with the dust-smeared windows with only a plague of the National Monument's Council that explains with a few sentences in Afrikaans, English and German what this little locomotive once stood for.
Eileen van der Schyff Vandalism, theft of equipment and rubbish dumping are the reasons The Salt Company had to fence off its mining area at Mile 8. The fence prevents vehicle access to a large beach area, but people like substance fishermen can still access the area by bicycle or on foot. Since the fence came up, many Swakopmund residents put questions to the Namib Times. Everyone wanted to know why the fence was erected. The newspaper conducted a snap investigation. “We had little choice given the circumstances of theft, vandalism and people dumping their rubbish and leaving rubbish on the beach after outings there”, explained the Managing Director of the Swakopmund Salt Company this week. Adding the fence is part of the salt mining company's access control, one of the conditions of the mining license and environmental clearance that was compulsory to obtain such license. The fence's main purpose is to prohibit vehicle access to the area, reiterated Klein.

Fisheries training Fisheries observers, fisheries inspectors and employees of Lüderitz Mariculture recently attended a workshop at Lüderitz which equipped them with practical and theoretical knowledge in the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries. The training was a joint initiative by the Albatross Task Force (ATF) and Fisheries Observer Agency. A total of seventeen people attended the workshop which covered topics such as food webs, bycatch, fisheries management and law compliance- and enforcement. There is a critical need for the collective management and preservation of fisheries resources, not only with current objectives in mind but to preserve these resources of the planet for future generations. The course was facilitated by Mr. Titus Shaanika and Ms. Samantha Matjila of the ATF and Mr. Stanley Ndara, the CEO of the Fisheries Observer Agency. After the conclusion of the course a “training of trainers” or “TOT” took place with a smaller group of participants to ensure there is an institutional memory of knowledge available to carry the knowledge forward to current and future workers of the FAO, Ministry of Fisheries and Lüderitz Mariculture. Walvis Bay boasts a new feather in its tourism hat. The Blue Whale Hotel opened its doors on Kovambo Nujoma Lane, overlooking the lagoon. The opening was marked by a most enjoyable function on Monday night. The hotel has 19 luxury rooms and was completed at a total cost of N$25 million. It offers a unique experience in the sense that excellent service, the best amenities a hotel can offer and that at the backdrop of the beautiful natural surroundings offered by the Walvis Bay lagoon and the nearby Namib desert. Mayor of Walvis Bay, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried was the guest of honour at the opening and said he was deeply impressed by the fact that as many as 60 % of staff employed at the Blue Whale Hotel were previously unemployed. It not only offers people much welcomed opportunities in these challenging financial times, but the investment the owners of the hotel made pushes the boundaries for Walvis Bay as a tourism haven and an investment oasis. Rooms are designed for those who prefer an intimate atmosphere with a stylish, unique spirit. All rooms have an en suite bathroom, flat screen televison with cable and satellite channels, Wifi, personal safe, mini bar fridge an a study desk. The day can be ended with a sun

Weather - aircraft contrails visible over Walvis Bay It might have been hot temperatures on the ground, but extremely low air temperatures high up in the sky played along perfectly this week for passenger airliners to leave contrails or vapour trials in the sky above Walvis Bay (indicated by red arrows). On Tuesday a passenger liner of Latin American Airlines (LATAM) left a long vapour trail stretching from east to west and visible from very far over Walvis Bay. The airliner was en-route from Johannesburg to Sao Paulo in Brazil. With remnants of its vapour trail still visible, a second airliner, of Delta Airlines en route from Atlanta in the United States to Johannesburg left a vapour trial which crossed with the one left by the LATAM flight. system. These clouds are visible as parallel, white lines for-ming behind the aircraft. The tower structure of the St. Matthews Anglican church on the corner of 7th Road and Sam Nujoma Drive in Walvis Bay formed the perfect foreground on Tuesday for this picture to show the vapour trials.

Performing artists call for recognition Sharlien Tjambari
Performing Arts is not a sport many people pay attention to so those who have talent usually go unnoticed. A group of seven girls from Namibia brought back several medals from Los Angeles (LA). Swakopmund's Leanne Magson came back with a gold in spokes modelling.
Leanne and Latoya Stephanus met with Namib Times to share their experiences. The girls participated last year in the Namibian Championship of Performing Arts and qualified to go to Los Angeles for the World Championship of Performing Arts competition in California. They departed on 6 July from the Hosea Kutako International Airport. They had to compete with over 7000 competitors and still managed to return with three gold medals. Leanne's mother Ennie Magson said it was very hard to raise money for the girls because each one had to pay more than N$100 000 to go to LA but in the end her daughter managed to go. “Sixty children from Namibia actually qualified for the World Championships but only seven could raise money for the trip. We had to pay for everything, we tried to get sponsorship from the government, but they didn't help. Namibia has talent but do not see performing arts as a sport and do not recognise dancers”, Magson stated. During the interview with Namib Times, Leanne said she did not regret going to Los Angeles. “I am grateful for all the people who sponsored me including my mom, grandmother and dad. The trip opened my eyes and I now feel I can take on anything without being scared”. Latoya said she is privileged to have been part of the group that went to LA. According to the girls, the trip was a very good experience because they learned a lot from the other performers. Leanne and Latoya both performed in the age group 13-15 and they danced and modelled. The seven girls, 5 from Windhoek, one from Swakopmund and another from Walvis Bay had to travel with the South African team and had Lomine Brynard as their director. Naledi Kunene (19) from Windhoek came back with a gold and bronze medal, Anrie Brynard (11) got a gold medal and Leanne Magson (13) also got a gold medal for being the best in her age category.
According to Leanne, although the competition was tough, and they were high on their nerves the organisers made the environment very relaxing. “There was a fun part to the trip too, we went to Disney land as a treat and also went to Universal Studios, got to see a lot of characters and it was a fun experience”, said Leanne. Ennie Magson further said the country should start recognising performing artists like other countries. “I was surprised when I heard that all the 100 girls who came from Philippines received full trip sponsorship from their government and those girls did so well and were working hard because they are encouraged and supported by their government”.

Es blieb uns nichts übrig, als im Schutz einer Düne das Zelt aufzuschlagen. Der Sturm legte sich um 10. Der Mond schien über der Wüste; es war eisig kalt. Ich bin noch 1 km in die Wüste hineingelaufen. Am nächsten Morgen 5 Uhr auf; Motor in Ordnung gebracht. Auto ausgeschaufelt. Mit den Riemen haben wir das Auto über die Düne gebracht, dann mit der Winde den Anhänger nachgezogen. Um 10 fuhren wir weiter. Das wiederholte sich noch circa 10 mal. Es war glühende Sonne und ein glutheißer Ostwind kam aus der Namib. Wir kamen nur noch meterweise mit den Riemen vorwärts. Da kam zum Glück ein alter Afrikaaner mit einem Spezialwüstenwagen. Der nahm unseren Anhänger ab, nach zwei Stunden kam unser Auto mit Hilfe von dessen 10 Negern flott. Henno brauste los und kam glücklich die Dünen rauf auf die gut zu fahrende steinige Namibfläche. Aber dann stak das Auto des Afrikaaners fest. Der Sand war glühend. Nicht zum Anfassen. Alles Schieben nützte nichts.... Fortsetzung folgt! Liebe Küstenleser! Man spricht kurioserweise vom schwarzen Kontinent, wenn von Afrika die Rede ist. Die Eigenschaft bezieht sich auf die mehrheitlich ziemlich stark getähnte Bevölkerung. Ich persönlich würde eher vom bunten Erdteil sprechen, einmal was spezifisch die abwechslungsreiche Palette der Hautpigmentierung seiner Bewohner betrifft, zum anderen was die schillernden Schwingungen dieser Erdplatte in

Aber heute bleibe ich ausnahmsweise bei dem Eigenschaftswort “schwarz”, und zwar deshalb, weil der im südlichen Afrika beheimatete Trauerdrongo (dicrurus adsimilis), um den es hier geht, quasi schwarz ist. Es ist aber nicht allein das dunkle Gefieder, das er mit ziemlich vielen Afrikanern teilt, sondern er geht auch einer Tätigkeit nach, die erfahrungsgemäß in Afrika sehr beliebt ist: Er klaut! Obwohl dem kleinen Vogel mit dem gegabelten Schwanz (daher fork-tailed drongo auf Englisch) weder Bohrer, Backstein noch Balaklava zur Verfügung stehen, schafft er es trotzdem, dem anderen - meist unerkannt und mit schraubenzieherund messerloser Leichtigkeit die Beute zu stehlen, ohne dass dabei ein Tropfen Blut fließt. Wie das denn? Nun, ganz einfach! Der gefiederte Räuber
Ha, da kennt ihr unseren Trauerdrongo aber nicht! Statt Trübsal zu blasen, wie es sein Name verlangt, stürzt er sich mit Freuden in sein reiches Repertoire an artfremden Warnrufen aus der vielfältigen Palette der Tierwelt und umgeht somit professionell dem bedeutungslos gewordenen Alarmsignal. Wow, dass solch ein Zauberkünstler den Slangnamen Drongo trägt, was in Australien und Neuseeland so viel wie ‘Idiot’ bedeutet, finde ich geradezu beleidigend. Und auch die Trauer passt hier so ganz und gar nicht hinein, auch wenn es sich um einen Diebstahl handelt. Denn jetzt kommt der Hammer! Seine Kleptomanie und seinen Parasitismus macht der mikstertbyvreter (Afrikaanser Name, der sich auf seinen zielgerichteten Schwanz und seine Vorliebe für Bienen bezieht) nämlich wieder wett. Neben seiner WarnstimmenMimikry beherrscht er
Gattung homo sapiens jemandem die Geldbörse klaut und dem Opfer die Hälfte der Scheine aus dem Portmonnee in die Hand drückt. Forscher haben das Verhalten von 64 Trauerdrongos und ihren Klauversuchen in der Kalahari beobachtet. Dabei identifizierten sie 59 verschiedene nachgeahmte Alarmrufe und Kombinationen daraus. Ich habe ja sonst etwas gegen Schurken, die andere beklauen, aber bei solch einem Experten in Sachen Fremdsprachenbeherrschung weicht meine Wut einer absoluten Bewunderung. Mit minimalem Aufwand, ohne Zerstörung und Blutvergießen, einem zuzeiten auch entgegenkommenden Altruismus und mit geschicktem Täuschungsmanöver füllen diese Vogeldiebe ihre leeren Mägen. WOW! Stepping Stone school united in purple Reptile Mineral Resources and Exploration (Pty) Ltd (RMR) brought smiles to the faces of children at Stepping Stone Special Education School in Swakopmund when they donated school uniforms worth an approximate value of N$35 000 earlier this month. The school follows the philosophy of Inclusive Education for children with autism and related special needs. Almarie Mostert, Head of the school said: “We are very thankful for the sponsorship. We feel that wearing a uniform will create a feeling of belonging and purpose with the children and bring closer the element of inclusion. It will also bring some promotion and awareness of the school and autism in Swakopmund”. Dr Katrin Kärner said: “We are pleased to bring
some big smiles to the children' and teachers' faces. We wish Almarie and her team all the best for guiding the children to reach their full potential through the stepping stones they provide”. Coastal Players at APS Cricket Festival The Coastal Welwitschias and Pro-Ed Academy's under 19 Cricket teams are in Windhoek to participate in the Africa Personel Services under 19 Cricket League that started yesterday with the final be played on Sunday 25 August in Windhoek. The Coastal Welwitschias are the 2018 APS Cricket Festival champions as they beat Windhoek Gymnasium last year in the final. The team are the favourites to won the title again. The Namibian women's beach volleyball team finished sixth out of 16 countries that participated in the 12th edition African Games (AG) from 16 to 21 August in Rabat, Morocco. Namibia's beach volleyball team of Kim Seebach and Kristin Schulz lost 1-2 to Mauritius in the quarterfinals and had to play for 5th or 6th place against a very familiar team of Morocco battling for 5th - 8th place. Kristin & Kim competed with heart desire and the hard work lost 2-0 against Morocco to record a sixth place finish out of 16 countries. The Namibian team had a 2:0 (21:0, 21:0) walkover against Sierra Leone as they did not show up for the game. On the second day the Namibian team played and won their first game against Rwanda 2:0; and on the third and last day of the group games Namibia beat Sudan 2:0 to end second in their group with 2 wins and one loss.

Everson completes first Walvis Bay Rally Rudi Bowe
Twenty drivers and navigators competed in the 2019 edition of the Shell V-Power Rally hosted by the Walvis Bay Motor Club (WBMC) last Saturday in Walvis Bay. The popular Jan Everson / Fanie Botes of the WBMC managed to finish his first Walvis Bay rally with his 4x2 Seal Consulting S2 VW Polo (Naartjie). Everson and Botha ended second in the S2 class in a time of 1:12:37. Only twelve cars were able to complete the fourth leg of the Namibian national rally championship for sedans and off-road trucks (OR). The MD said “At Vivo Energy and Shell V-Power safety comes first, therefore I would like to thank WBMC the racers and the spectators for a good and safe Walvis Bay Rally. This is the first time that attend a rally where there was no accident”. He added that they are very proud to be part of Rally in Namibia and that Shell V-Power will continue to sponsor rallies in Namibia to show how good the performance there product is. Local favourite Allan Martin and Maretha Olivier in S4 class with their J&P Hydraulics 4x4 Skoda retired at the third stage. Martin did not want to proceed as there was an unwelcome sounds in the engine of the lightning-fast Skoda R5. Martin said that it was a tough rally but the Skoda was truly fantastic in the first two stages as he did extremely well by beating Dippenaar and Redelinghuys. About three-quarters of the third stage of 16.38 km he heard strange noises from the engine. He decided to retire rather than ruined the engine. “I was very much looking forward to this rally, but had to make the sad decision as I really don't know what's going on with the engine and still waiting for the people in the Czech Republic to analyse the data” Martin added. Martin said "I'm definitely going to compete in the Gobabis rally, but it will probably be with the old 4x4 S2000 VW Polo (Green Mamba), because I doubt the Skoda will be ready at the time."
