A 56 year-old employee of Coastal Auto Repairs in Swakopmund died on Friday morning when a truck on which he worked slipped off a hydraulic jack and crushed him. A second person sustained serious injuries during the freak accident. The incident was confirmed by Detective Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, Acting Regional Crime Investigations Co-ordinator for Erongo. According to Iikuyu the two employees were working under the truck and were busy repairing a rear spring blade. “It is alleged that at

about 10:30, while they were busy under the truck, the jack slid off and the truck fell on top of them,” Iikuyu explained. Although the garage owner and other workers acted quickly and jacked up the truck to rescue the victims, one of the employees, Mr Fillemon Kamati (56) died at the scene.

Another employee, Levi Nghede (46), sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Swakopmund State Hospital. His condition was described as stable. The next of kin of the deceased were informed. The police is investigating the incident.

A member of the Swakopmund public discovered a crying weekold baby in the Nonidas area on Saturday morning. The infant is believed to have been abandoned and a hunt is now on to locate the baby's mother. The public is urged to come forward with any possible information that can lead to the location of the mother. “The police is urgently requesting public assistance in tracing the mother of a week-old baby that was dumped next to the water pipeline in the vicinity of Nonidas on Saturday morning. Any person having information which can lead to the suspect's arrest should contact Detective Chief Inspector Shangula at (081-667 6820) or report to the nearest Police Station,” reports Erwin Leuschner from the namib times' Swakopmund office. According to Detective Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, Acting Regional Crime Investigations Co-ordinator for Erongo, the crying baby girl was found by a member of the public next to the water pipeline at about 8:45 about ten km outside of Swakopmund. The person alerted the police who were fortunately in the area. “It seems the baby (black in complexion) was dumped there that morning by an unknown mother who is now a suspect,” Iikuyu said. The police is investigating the case of Child Abandonment and Neglect. The baby was taken to the Swakopmund State Hospital for medical examination. There it came to light that the baby girl was born in a hospital, but it could not be established which hospital. The child is safe and in a healthy condition. She was taken to the Walvis Bay Kids Haven in Walvis Bay, where she is being cared for.

Kahimise yesterday confirmed to namib times he was offered the CoW top job, yet he is still considering this offer. The question on everybody's lips is, who will be the next CEO of Erongo Red should Kahimise accept the CEO CoW offer.

Four bag snatchers nabbed in Swakopmund by Neighbourhood Watch Erwin Leuschner

The Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch arrested four suspects on Friday after they allegedly snatched a camera from a tourist in the centre of town a short while earlier. “We observed the getaway car in Ocean View and made the arrests, but a fifth suspect most likely carrying the stolen goods, was gone,” said Dewald Swart of the Neighbourhood Watch to namib times. Since the start of the tourist season in Namibia a few months ago visitors from abroad have unfortunately become the target of various types of criminal activities in the coastal town. They mostly fall victim to robbers and have their valuables stolen during snatch and grab incidents. “It was all thanks to the quick response time of our members and a bit of luck that we managed to arrest the suspects so quickly,” Swart added. The camera was snatched from a tourist close to the tennis court area at the Mole. An eyewitness phoned the Neighbourhood Watch immediately and gave a description of the vehicle being a blue VW Golf. “When we found the vehicle in Ocean View four suspects jumped out and ran off. We managed to track them down and arrest them,” Swart added. The camera was not found though and it is suspected that a fifth person escaped with it. Even though the vehicle had number plates, it was not licenced. The Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) and the Swakopmund branch of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) recently appealed to the coastal business community and the general public to join forces with both institutions to address the issue of the rising crime committed against tourists. “If we don't change our attitude, we will lose jobs in the tourism sector. We simply cannot afford to have crime increase,” NCCI Chairperson Paul Njambula said during a briefing a month ago. While condemning the rising crime rate, he noted that the tourism sector is currently doing well due to the favourable exchange rate for overseas visitors. “Every tourist coming to Namibia creates an average of three jobs. If a single tourist is attacked, we lose these valuable jobs. We need to change our attitude,” he warned.

SRA takes more issue with high rise buildings The Swakopmund Residents Association (SRA) highlights a number of issues of concern in the holiday town. In its latest letter to the public the Association expresses itself as follows: “The quotation which tells us that all it takes for wrong to triumph is for good men to say nothing comes to mind in relation to high rise buildings in Swakopmund. We are so passive, so submissive and it seems as if the Swakopmund population has once again bent its head in acceptance about the need for high rise buildings to stop the 'sprawl' of housing. We allowed ourselves to be bullied about Platz am Meer and now we are bowing down once again. We are not talking about high rise buildings in the DRC or Mondesa where the major 'sprawl' is happening – no, we are talking about costly apartments in expensive high-rise buildings in town, apartments that many of us will never afford in buildings operated by people who do not care at all about ordinary folk. How many of us can afford to stay at the new Strand Hotel? Or any of the other fancy hotels, for instance? Councillor Groenewald put up a brave defence of this proposal and his points are excellent but then with a few dismissive

words, the proposal was accepted and put through. We are told by Councillor Shitana that our opinions are of no importance. We are not to have a say over our town, or our living conditions and our future. We have a 'general fear towards change,' he claims. By that we wonder if he means towards phosphate mining, or building developments which encroach on our beach areas and break municipal restrictions; favoured land sales to the SWAPO Party and now building restrictions which will change the appeal and dynamic of

Swakopmund forever for the benefit of a few rich, greedy developers and investors. What happened to common sense and intelligence? The 'sprawl' is doomed to continue as the development of these highrise buildings will never fit a particular housing demand. The councillor needs to learn that he is employed to serve the people and to do his job with respect and honour. Our water position is serious. We are already beyond the safe withdrawal rate from the Omdel aquifer. In addition, our town swells so greatly during the month of De-

cember that even further demands will be put on our water supply. It seems as if water rationing cannot be avoided unless the Council can negotiate an acceptable rate for desalinated water, so be prepared for restrictions or higher prices. Those of us who have visited towns like Omaruru, which have restrictions will know this is not an easy situation. And on the subject of water – at the recent talk on desalination we were informed that thousands of litres of 'brown' water were flushed into the sea daily. This in a time when many gardeners would love to be connected to the 'brown' water system and not use our expensive and precious resource of clean, desalinated water. As we are in a big drive to recycle, perhaps it is time for the Municipality to readdress this issue and urgently include it in the recycling plans. The Swakopmund railway station is an

unfinished, unsatisfactory project and the proposed TransNamib mall project has fallen away in the centre of a great dispute about land ownership and viability. The premises of the Little Foot Nursery which was given notice have been standing empty and a great question mark hangs over the whole area. Those poor souls who use the railway station have little shelter and are exposed to danger when they have to cross the tracks to get to the main building, such as it is. Looking ahead, the railway line is going to need great changes when the harbour development makes progress and this will be an interesting situation. It is obvious throughout Namibia t h a t Tr a n s N a m i b needs a great turnaround in strategy to regain its former position. One enormous advantage to its success for us Swakopmunders would be the fact that if TransNamib was able to work efficiently, we

would lose so many of the heavy trucks and other transport on our roads. Complaints have been received about businesses having dirty and littered pavements in front of their shops. This has surprised us as we believe that most businesses are very proud of their business environment. Still – business owners please take note! Are the street cleaners in town still active? So many complaints are also made about our poor Internet service. There was such hope and great promise when the new fibreoptic line was brought in but the sad truth is that our service is poor, and we do not get what we pay for. Telecom needs to do much better with its delivery. Our pavements need urgent attention. There are gaps everywhere, causing a real danger to pedestrians and blocks of pavers, which have been taken up to do a repair, stand neglected. Whether the fault lies with

Telecom or Erongo Red, some measure of quality needs to take place, and these unfinished repairs need to be attended to. We seem to live in a culture of superiority where the people we pay to give us service, end up thinking that we are inferior to them, and that their poor service is good enough. It is very good, although challenging at times, to see our roads and road markings being upgraded in time for our peak tourist season over the Christmas months. Do road markings last longer in other towns or is our problem our damp weather, which causes a one-year life span? To end on a positive note, it is good to see the pathway running along the sea-front is being paved – a very good service to all who walk there to enjoy the Swakopmund sea, sand and sun (and mist and cold wind!) This is greatly appreciated”

A 17 year old was stabbed in Swakopmund and a 44 year old man commited suicide a few hours before his court appearance in Usakos Sharlien Tjambari

On Saturday, 19 November at around 23:00 a seventeen year old boy who was identified as Desmond Garibasen Rinaldo Awarab was stabbed on the left side of his chest with a sharp object at Hero Bar in Mondesa. According to Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in Erongo region, the victim died on the way to Swakopmund State Hospital and it is not clear what caused the stabbing. Iikuyu further said that in connection with the case one suspect, a 31 year old man was

detained for questioning. The next of kin of the deceased person were informed. Police investigation continues. In an unrelated incident, NamPol reported a suicide case at Usakos on 17 November. It is alleged that at about 08:30, the deceased who was identified as Timotheus Gertze, a 44 year old was found hanging from a roof in the garage at a family residence, house no 230 Toerien Street, Bo-dorp suburb in Usakos. Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu who confirmed the incident said the deceased used a rope which he tied to the roof to hang himself. No suicide note was left. “The decease is from Rehoboth and arrived in Usakos on 16 November to appear in Usakos Magistrate Court on the day he committed suicide, with three others on a case of stock theft. The case was set for plea and trial. He was out on bail, his next of kin were informed” said Iikuyu.

A young lady was bumped by a car in DRC and died at hospital Sharlien Tjambari A case of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and driving without a driver's license was opened at Mondesa Charge Office after a driver of a vehicle bumped a young lady. The incident took place on Friday, 18 November in the DRC informal settlement of Swakopmund. It is alleged that on Friday around 11:00, a 24 year old Wilhelmine Mapumba was bumped by a sedan motor vehicle in the DRC informal settlement while walking in the street on the way home. Wilhelmine sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Swakopmund State Hospital. She was again transferred from Swakopmund State Hospital to the Walvis Bay State Hospital for surgery where she died between 19:00 and 20:00 on the same day. Her next of kin were informed. The driver of the vehicle who was identified as Terence Ronaldo Naobeb, aged 25 was arrested at the scene. Police investigation continues.

The Warning Signs of Drunk Driving In the spirit of Heroes Day, Namibians have much to celebrate and appreciate; but as most celebrations are accompanied with alcohol, it creates the risk of drivers getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. Driving while under the influence of alcohol is not only very dangerous, but could lead to fatal consequences. Regardless, many continue to get behind the wheel after having a few too many. Making this choice can put the lives of both the driver and passengers in grave danger, as well as motorists sharing the road. Nothing can fully prevent drivers from being exposed to the risks posed by intoxicated motorists on the road, but by being able to recognise the warning signs of drunk driving, it may at least be possible for other drivers to attempt to steer clear of these drivers. Therefore, it is important that all individuals be attentive to some of the most common drunk driving warning signs. The following is a brief list of some of the most common warning signs associated with drunk driving: o o o o o o o

Swerving between lanes Driving on the shoulder Driving much faster or slower than the speed limit Following other cars too closely Making wide turns Failing to stop at traffic lights or stop signs All of these signs may be an indication that another motorist was intoxicated.

Taxi drivers told to stop charging N$5 fee with immediate effect Statement not yet issued where Nabta admits recent fair increase was irregular A meeting was held on Sunday in Walvis Bay, attended by some 600 taxi operators and owners to discuss the ongoing difference over increased tariffs charged to the public in recent weeks. The meeting was addressed by the President of Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (NABTA), Mr Vespa Muunda. The Walvis Bay public was hit by taxi tariff increases in recent weeks of as many as 200 %. There were also new charges introduced such as an additional N$5 when a taxi passenger have with him or her 12,5kg bag of sugar or mealie meal. Taxi drivers and operators provided namib times with a handwritten statement yesterday, signed by Mr Munde that indicates taxi owners and operators are unhappy with a number of conditions that hamper their taxi business operations daily. The main obstacle is the fact that there is no taxi rank where passengers can be dropped. This leaves taxi drivers no other option than to drop passengers off wherever they request. At the meeting though, it was admitted the extra charge of N$5 for a bag of potatoes, sugar or mealie meal is irregular. Taxi drivers were instructed to stop these extra charges with immediate effect. Taxi

operators how-ever, are unhappy with the current fee and feel extra charges should be called into existence to make it feasible to drop off passengers where they request. An official letter from the Ministry of Works and Transport dated 10 March 2014, and signed by the then Minister of Works and Transport Erkki Nghimtina, is according to them the last time there was a tariff increase for taxi operators. According to the letter taxi operators and drivers formed a committee on Sunday to discuss problems and grievances with the relevant authorities in Walvis Bay. This includes meeting with the Walvis Bay municipality to clarify problems in an official manner. In the meantime, the Walvis Bay municipal traffic department cautioned taxi drivers not to charge any tariffs other than the existing tariffs. Taxi drivers and operators are also cautioned against acts of intimidation and isola-

ted incidents of assault on passengers during confrontations over the higher taxi fees the taxi industry in Walvis Bay announced one-sidedly and illegally. An official statement by the Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (Nabta) is also yet forthcoming in which the Association admits the so called fee increase of recent weeks is irregular and in fact illegal.

Restaurant boatâ€™s gang plank collapses under patrons

Third super yacht to call on 28 Nov The recently established restaurant boat at Walvis Bay suffered a setback on Friday night, when the gang plank that gives access to the vessel's floating jetty at the Walvis Bay Waterfront collapsed. Processing Factory inaugurated Piquet Jacobs

The Amstai Seafood Processing Factory was officially inaugurated by Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau. The factory comes as a joint venture between Taiyo Namibia and Amswohl Fishing LTD, which will focus their resources on adding value to crab and various seafood. “This is encouraging news indeed, because you will not only be able to utilize the processing capacity in this factory more economically, but will also translate into more longterm jobs for your staff,” Esau commented regarding the wide

range of processing the factory will take on. “Now as we commence this new chapter on this journey of the rocky seas, we implore the Ministry of Fisheries for increased allowable catch annually. We now need that increased tonnage so as to work towards this factory becoming a sustainable economic contributor for this coastal town,” added Annemarie Wohler.

Service Advisors in FNB branches delighted to help customers FNB Namibia recently revealed their new customer CARE system which is designed to streamline compliments, complaints and queries logging and management. “This, however, is not all on the customer service front,” says Linda Shininge, National Service Manager. Other exciting happenings at FNB Namibia are the service advisors in branches, also known as floor walkers and emigrators. Linda explains: “These are staff members who are physically on the floor – especially over month end – to ask people what assistance they need and to re-direct them to the right queue or alternatively to show them the much faster, saver and more affordable self-service options. She adds that converting from going to the bank to internet or cellphone

banking is not easy for all customers but FNB aims to assist and where necessary show customers over numerous weeks how best they can transfer funds, deposit at a realtime ATM, use eWallet and the like. Jasmine Boois is the service advisor at FNB's Maerua branch and enjoys her work tremendously. Every morning she ensures that all stations are manned and that, for example, enough deposit slips are available. Her work then starts in earnest as soon as the branch opens for custo-

mers. “Most of our customers are familiar with the cellphone app and internet banking as well as the eWallet and ATM options, and only really come into the branch if they require other services, like opening of a bank account, statements dating back over many months or they have a query.” Jasmine makes sure that customers are in the correct queue and do not spend unnecessary time in a wrong queue. “I have been in Maerua branch for 2 years and have noticed that many customers who used to come into the

bank, don't do this anymore as they are successfully making use of all the electronic options. This is good news for us and for them,” she adds. “The young people are very eager to learn about Cellphone banking and other electronic options, while some of our elderly customers still tend to come into the bank for our assistance albeit at the ATM – just so we can make sure they do everything correctly – and we do so with a smile.” The migration of customers from bricks to clicks is ongoing at FNB

Namibia and is definitely taking root at the bank. “We need to constantly educate our customers about the electronic possibilities and make sure that we fit them with the right option. Our youngsters enjoy banking on the phone, while others customers prefer the computer or the many options that an ATM offers. Whatever their needs – we are here to assist and make sure that they get the right products and services at the right prices.”

Namibian Volleyball Federation to host a Zone 6 The Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) has been accorded an opportunity to host a Zone 6 Club Championship that will be held on 10th – 20th December 2016 in Swakopmund. Through our newly founded alliance with the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Complex, the Dome, we have identified this as the perfect venue for this event. The event is the qualifier tournament for the 2017 African Volleyball Club Championship; Namibia is expecting approximately 40 clubs which translate into about 600 participants from ten SADC countries namely; Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Due to the past record of this championship we are expecting round about 300 – 450 participants as some countries fails to send their clubs due to issues like high competition standard as well as financial implications. As a host country, Namibia has a privilege to enter 4 teams per gender and all teams that made it to the semi-finals of our Bank Windhoek NVF Cup were expected to enter for the Zone VI Club Championship. Due to financial constraints one team from each gender has withdrawn their participation, these are Nakapele VC (male) from Ongwediva and Oshana NamPol (female) from Oshakati. Namibia will be represented by 3 teams in the male and female categories namely; NDF, Khomas NamPol, Namibian Navy A and Revivals, SKW, Noordgrens respectively. We believe that top players such as Eddy Uyepa of NDF, Messah Kambala of Khomas NamPol, Anna Mupiri of SKW, Tuli Amakali of Revivals to mention but a few will do Namibia proud as they are hard at work preparing for the event. For the first time in the history at the championship there will be a Beach Volleyball competition held following the indoor competition on the 18th – 19th December 2016. Namibia will be entering 3 Club teams per gender including three of the four ladies that competed for a place to the Rio Olympics at the CAVB Continental Cup Finals in Nigeria in April; Kim Seebach, Rosi Hennes & Steff Palmhert. Jan-Eric Sack who has dominated the Timeout Beach Series 2016, winning 4 out of 5 tournaments. We also have our Under 19's World Championship teams; Kristin Schulz, Michi Böhringer, Daniel & Fabian Pfeifer and a team from the Navy; Ishitile Aloisius V & Nashikaku Sakeus. This year's competition will as well serve as a qualifying event for International Referees Candidate amongst other are referees who attended an International Referees Candidate Course in 2014 in Zimbabwe. Namibia does not have any candidate or qualified International referees at this point due to a lack of funding we were unable to send any to attend the course held in 2014. This means that all referees for this event will be nominated from outside countries and the NVF will have to provide accommodation for them. An instructor from the Confederation of International Volleyball (FIVB) will be present to grade the referees and qualify the successful candidate at the event. The tournament is taking place during peak holiday season; Swakopmund will be crowded with local and international tourists and holiday-goers, making it the perfect setting for the tournament and a maximum-exposure event for the

sponsors attached to it. At this moment, we are searching for a one-timeonly sponsorship deal exclusive to the aforementioned tournament. Based on the outcome of the event and given that both parties were to find the partnership beneficial, there is the potential to establish a more long-term relationship which could be formulated in the wake of the tournament. So far only the following sponsors have come on

board; Bank Windhoek with N$40 000 sponsorship, The Dome indoor sports complex have sponsored the playing venue at a total cost of N$80 000 for a week duration. Breaking records: longest and most accessible Queen’s Baton Relay international sector announced On an ambitious journey to connect with a modern and diverse Commonwealth, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) will achieve two records – it will be the longest and the most accessible relay in Commonwealth history. The international sector of the QBR was revealed with the Queen's Baton design today at Jupiters Gold Coast as the city celebrates 500 days to go until the Games. The global journey, which spans 388-days and 230,000km, was illustrated by a four-metre tall hologram of the globe in a Jupiters Gold Coast stage spectacular. The Queen's Baton will provide thousands of people throughout the Commonwealth with the opportunity to experience the spirit of friendship for which the Commonwealth Games are renowned. The international sector presents each region with a unique opportunity to showcase its people, heritage, culture and environment to the rest of the Commonwealth. For the first time, the Baton will be present at the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in Nassau, Bahamas from 19 to 23 July 2017. The CYG will provide a unique opportunity for the Baton to engage and inspire today's youth, with 60 per cent of Commonwealth citizens less than 30-years of age. The Relay will begin at Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, 13 March 2017, when Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II will place her message to the Commonwealth into the GC2018 Baton. From London, the Queen's Baton will travel sequentially through Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Oceania, spending between two and four days in each Commonwealth nation and territory. This will give a third of the world's population the opportunity to share a memorable experience with the Baton. When the Queen's Baton arrives on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018, the entire Commonwealth will have been a part of the journey. The international sector of the GC2018 Queen's Relay is a joint initiative of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) in partnership with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). Commonwealth Games Associations (CGA) in each nation and territory are responsible for selecting batonbearers that inspire their community to be great. The QBR has been the traditional curtain raiser to every Commonwealth Games since the Cardiff 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
