A cold storage facility, with a capacity of 12 500 tons, will be constructed at Walvis Bay at a total price tag of N$400 million. Construction is scheduled to commence during March this year and would take eighteen months to complete. The completion of this project will considerably enhance Walvis Bay's cold chain capacity, mainly for the import and export of fish. The facility also has capacity to handle other products like meat, dates, and other fresh products relying on a cold chain from harvesting to plate. Moreover, it would also end the current market arrangement where fish for instance has to be export via Spain to markets in South America. Direct export capacity would ensure Namibia's products go directly to the market, instead of detours which only add to price inflation and longer delivery times. Nida was established by Act of Parliament in 2018 (Act 16 of 2016) to advance Namibia's industrialisation agenda in line with the country's 5th National Development Plan and to achieve these industrialisation goals through harmonised cooperation between the State and the private sector. A cold chain is crucial for among others the export of fish. Although the Namibian Government has been promoting land-based fish processing in recent years, this cannot gain full potential unless Walvis Bay's cold chain capacity is enlarged. The cold chain is a term applied to food handling and distribution where the product is maintained at suitable temperature conditions all the way from harvesting, through the cooling or freezing process to the point of export or in the case of import, up to the point of sale. De Villiers explained the new cold storage facility would be constructed some three kilometers from the Walvis Bay International Airport. The facility will be strategically located for both import- and export movement and will have a capacity to discharge a 30-tons truck in under 30 minutes. The bigger picture of the 54 000 square meter facility's processing capability, De Villiers emphasised, was that Namibia would no longer have to export fish via Spain to leading Namibian fish importers like Brazil. “We'll be able to export straight to our clients in South America. We're also looking at clients in Europe.” According to De Villiers at least 75% of the facility will be concentrated on fish. “However, we've also identified date and meat exports and chicken imports as possible beneficiaries of the new development.” Irvaan Maharaj, SA-based business development manager for the Walvis Bay Corridor Group, whose responsibility it is to market the port and its logistical linkages, said the new facility would contribute significantly to the port's potential. IPC-President Panduleni Ithula says N$12 billion needed to liberate people from the ghetto’s The President of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), Dr Panduleni Ithula, says an average of N$12 billion is needed to clean up Namibia's informal settlements. Adding it is unacceptable for close to one million Namibians to live in this form of indignity any longer. “The amount of N$12 billion needed is small compared to the disasters we are experiencing”, Dr Ithula said. “There is no price on a human life. Let us invest the money in our people”, Dr Ithula concluded on the matter of the money needed to alleviate the indignity and suffering of Namibians in the informal settlements. Dr Ithula's visit to Walvis Bay on Thursday follows a devastating fire in Kuisebmond's Twaloloka quarter. A total of 27 shacks were destroyed in the fire. People lost all their belongings. For the people of Twaloloka suffering brought about by fire is a known evil. In a fire at the end of July 2020, close to 200 shacks were destroyed in a fire. Some one thousand people were left homeless. Thanks to donations from the private sector and the public sector, tents were obtained to serve as
temporary shelter. Daily food kitchens ensure people have at least one decent meal a day. Addressing the people of Twaloloka on Wednesday, Dr Ithula urged the Walvis Bay local authority to speed up plans to make land available for mass housing. Equally capital needs to be unlocked from institutions like the Government Institutions Pension Fund (GiPF) to fund mass housing across the country. According to Dr Ithula some 995 000 people live in informal settlements across Namibia. That represents approximately 40 % of the nation (if assuming Namibia has a total population of 2,5 million people). This percentage should be a wake-up call that the issue of mass housing should be tackled with earnestly, seriousness and with best practises in mind, as without discipline this would again be doomed for a monumental failure.

With the majority of schools in the Erongo Region having the green light in terms of their readiness to resume face-to-face teaching next week there are however some schools in the Erongo region with a water shortage problem. The Director of Education in the Erongo region Erenfriede Stephanus briefed the media after a familiarisation tour to various schools around Omatjete, Tubusis and Spitzkoppe in the region. Stephanus said her office with stakeholders, including the governor of the Erongo Region, Neville Andre visited the various schools and hostels in the region to familiarised themselves with the readiness of the schools. Stephanus said, “The modes of the education ministry is that schools will again operate in a bubble system as this will allow the different grades to operate in isolation to mitigate the risk of infecting students with Covid-19. According to Stephanus parents will still be allowed to have learning from home as an option, especially for children who have underlying health conditions and provided that a set of guidelines are adhered to. The details of plans to reopen schools are ever evolving and the ministry is work on a daily basis and receive weekly updates from the inspectors and stakeholders. Stephanus explained that the system that was used when schools reopened last year after a lengthy lockdown, worked, therefore the same system where learners will still be divided into groups and will go to school on different days will be put in place when schools reopen next week. “This will allow schools to operate various grades in isolation to decrease the risk of Covid-19 infections at school and gives teachers the opportunity to work better with smaller groups”, Stephanus said. (NANTU) in Swakopmund is unhappy with the reopening of some schools as they don't have sufficient water. NANTU Vice chairperson Alina Alicky Imbili raised the concern over the fact that water remains a challenge for schools in the rural areas of the Erongo region in particular the Daures constituency. According to Alicky Imbili, they expected that the water problem has been solved as it was reported last year to various authorities, but the situation remains unchanged. Alicky Imbili said, “We cannot send learners to schools while we know that there is not sufficient water as water is a necessity, especially now with Covid-19, it will not be in the best interest of the learners and teachers to reopen those schools.” Erongo Regional Governor, Neville Andre, assured the union that his office and various stakeholders in the education sector in the region are working hard at ensuring that the problem will be solved soon. Andre said, “This problem is not only for schools and hostels, but the entire community is suffering. Some boreholes are dry and others are not effective, which leads to lack of water and low water supply to the communities.” According to Andre water has always been a challenge for the residents in the Daures constituency due to the persistent drought the region experienced over the years. “There is water but it's just not sufficient, we are looking into it. At the stage, Namwater is making sure there is water for residents, we are also looking at increasing it so that it is sufficient for both schools, hostels and the residents. My office is in communication with the ministry of water affairs, and we will soon have an engagement to address some of these issues. It is receiving our urgent attention”, Andre said.

Namibian Karate champions can qualify for Continental Championships in Paris, France Rudi Bowe
Five of Namibia's leading karate champions still have a small change to qualify for the 2021 Olympic Games in Japan.

The aim of the training camp was to improve their sharpness and skills with exposure to some of the neighboring country's competitors in their respective categories and to prepare the Namibians karateka's for the Continental Championships at a worldwide Olympic qualifying tournament from 11-13 June in Paris, France. Coach Llewellyn Manale says the group got rid of their belongings. "We are delighted with the course of the trip and are also happy to be safe back. We mostly stayed in a bio-bubble probably only visited a mall once. "It's my believe that these karatekas has a good chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games if they continue to improve in some respects," said Manale. Coach Manale said it was important for the karate team to be given the opportunity to be in hopefully sharp competitions in their sharpest places before arriving at the big qualifying event for the Olympic Games. Only ten karateka in each item (men and women, each only in three-weight classes) will make it to the Games in Tokyo, Japan. According to Manale “Half of these positions have already been awarded either from the host country Japan or to the top four participants in the world rankings.” “The remaining positions can only be secured at the Continental Championships (two places per item), or at a worldwide Olympic qualifying tournament (11-13 June in Paris, France), or by special invitation” Manale added. The National Assistaned Coach Paul Mwiya said, "We are grateful to everyone who made this trip possible and it now depends on as to do everything in our power to qualify for the Olympic Games." Mwiya said, "I am particularly pleased with the course of our training camp in South Africa, as we have learned so much from Morgan Moss and his team." The Namibian Sports Commission's Chief Administrator, Mr. Freddy Mwiya, assured the team that the government is doing everything in its power to assist the country's sportsmen who have already qualified for the Games, or who still stand a chance of qualifying.
The first month of the New Year has passed the halfway mark, whew how time flies while having fun. The first competition of the year at the Walvis Bay Golf Course, the CHAIRMANS CUP, where the committee take on the members, has also come and gone and please remind the scribe not to suggest the members bring their 'a' game again, as this is exactly what they did last week. It was in vain for the committee as they could not hold on to the CHAIRMAN CUP, although it must be mentioned that three of our committee members were unable to play on the day, Thomas Wolff, Grant Mather and Jaco Greeff, not that we are looking for an excuse I might add. But alas, it was the Trump appointed members captain Carlos de Gouveia who stood proud and tall and received the CHAIRMANS CUP from Shane Westerdale after a narrow win of 15 plays 13, see the photo1. For the record this puts the scores level at two wins apiece for the committee and members. I am sure that Wayne Hart of PENGUIN FISHING, and player in the members team, was happy to see a field of nearly 40 players turn out in somewhat warm conditions to open the new
season at the club. Well done to David Peake who shot a blistering 43 to win the first prize, second was Wynand Breytenbach on 41 points with Tienie de Wet third on 39 points. Pieter Fox took the last prize of the day being forth on 37 points. The best players of the day, winning the lucky draws, were Altus van der Westhuizen and Danie van Antwerpen. Two club money was paid out to Altus, Herman Smidt and Jaco de Wett. Boel Grobelaar was the happiest player on the course as he scored a 1 shot win over the chairman. On photo 2 are the four winners on the day, Tienie de Wet, Wynand Breytenbach, Pieter Fox and David Peake. The first of the Wednesday competitions sponsored by ARTISAN BAKERYwas played last week, and was won by none other than Uwe Bachmann, the sponsor on 22 points and winning he count out from Deon Grunschloss and Anton Welgemoed, also on 22 points. Thanks to all the members that contributed to Frieda after her house was burnt down recently, it is much appreciated.
