Domestic violence, as well as gender-based violence, is expected to be dealt a severe blow this festive season with special after-hours domestic violence courts that will be operational until 15 January 2018.

The Walvis Bay Municipal Traffic Department also joins the Namibian Police's Traffic Unit in law enforcement operations to keep death and injury off our roads, said traffic chief Eben Platt this week. Since 8 December the traffic department and Nampol Traffic arrested more than forty drunk drivers in Walvis Bay and on the B2 coastal road between Langstrand and Walvis Bay. Similar operations will be ongoing and a zerotolerance approach to any form of reckless or negligent driving, ignorance to traffic laws and road traffic signs, roadworthiness of vehicles, speeding, drunken driving and wearing of safety belts will be exercised. At the same time informal traders, the so-called Makalani traders, will also be issued with unique reflective jackets soon which includes a unique number to be able to distinguish between bona fide traders and those disguising as traders in order to create opportunities to commit crimes. The new neon-green reflective jackets, carrying a unique number as well as the municipal logo, were issued to the first six car guards operating in Sam Nujoma Avenue on Wednesday. The jackets were sponsored by the Swakopmund Paintball Centre, the Coastal Tourism Association of Namibia, Abenteuer Afrika Safari and one anonymous sponsor. "We are really grateful for the sponsorship and I am sure this will make a big difference", said Swakopmund's traffic chief Melvin Cloete as he handed over the jackets. In the past, car guards in Swakopmund were employed by a company with whom they had to share their profits. Town Council abolished this system mainly due to non-compliance by these companies. Instead, car guards have to register at the Swakopmund municipality where they are each issued with a unique number. According to Cloete, 85 car guards have registered so far, while the applications of a further 76 people have been approved. To qualify as a car guard, persons must present a police clearance amongst others to prove he has not been prosecuted for any criminal activities in the past. Once the guards are issued with these reflective jackets, they are assigned to a certain area where they operate. Car guards not wearing the new, - reflective jackets should be reported to the Swakopmund traffic department and will be treated as illegally engaged as car guards. "We also agreed to issue so-called Makalani hawkers with unique reflective jackets", said Peter van Ginkel of the Swakopmund Paintball Centre to namib times. These additional reflective jackets, which will be orange in color, as well as the remaining car guard jackets will be issued soon. Should a Makalani hawker be found harassing a person or be under the influence of alcohol, he can be easily identified with his unique number and be reported to the traffic department. In a media advisory this week the Office of the Judiciary said the following: "The Office of the Judiciary hereby announces that a Pilot Project for the facilitation of urgent interim protection orders during the festive season is currently underway, countrywide. This special project is a collaboration between the Office of the Judiciary and the Namibian Police Force. The scourge of Gender Based and Domestic Violence in the Namibian society prompted His Lordship, Peter S. Shivute, the Chief Justice of the Republic of Namibia to avail such a service to those who fall victim to it. During the Festive Season this scourge is heightened by the use and abuse of alcohol and other substances. The influence of substance abuse has a devastating effect on those most vulnerable in society and at times is fatal. Hence, a dedicated court team has been identified and is available to assist any victim of such Domestic or Gender Based Violence outside of the normal court day; at the respective courts in the country. Victims of such violence are hereby informed that they may apply for immediate relief by obtaining an interim protection order provided that the legal requirements are met. The Namibian Police Force Officers are ready to respond to such complaints at the respective Police Stations. Thus, the citizenry and the public at large are hereby notified that such service is available during weekends and on Public Holidays as from Monday, 18 December 2017 till Monday, 15 January 2018". In a telephonic interview this week the Chief Public Relations Officer of the Office of the Judiciary Yvette HĂźsselmann explained the practical process. In the event of a person falling victim to domestic- or gender-based violence the person needs to report the incident to their nearest police station. Police officials will take an affidavit to determine the circumstances. Once satisfied that the evidence is adequate, the Clerk of the Criminal Court at the magistrate's office with the jurisdiction to deal with the matter is contacted. A magistrate is available at all hours to hear the case and issue an interim protection order which will compel the perpetrator to stay away from the victim and/or to refrain from any further violent behaviour. Violating an interim protection order will lead to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator.

Senegalese tourist still missing at Brandberg Erwin Leuschner

â€œWe will not give up." With these words Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu gave his assurance that the widespread search for the missing Senegalese tourist at the Brandberg mountain will continue - even though the person has now been missing for close to a week. Mark Mokosho was reported missing in the vicinity of Namibia's highest mountain on Friday last week (15 December). By the time of going to print yesterday he was not yet found and the search by air using the police helicopter as well as on the ground continued. "This is at least the fourth time that the police helicopter has been sent out to conduct an aerial search of the area", Iikuyu said. Iikuyu is the police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo based in Walvis Bay. "In addition, we have deployed our members on the ground", he further explained. According to Iikuyu, five members of the Special Reserve Force as well as police members based at Uis have been searching the area by foot. They have also lit a big fire in the hope that Mokosho would see the smoke and find his way to them. The Senegalese national resides in the United States of America and is currently on holiday in Namibia. On Friday 15 December he drove from Swakopmund to the Brandberg for camping. He was travelling alone in a white Ford Ranger owned by Namibia Car Rentals. He was initially spotted walking by locals in the area the same day. He parked the car next to the "D2342" gravel road. The gravel road leads from the C35 to the abandoned Brandberg West tin mine. That same evening the car was found at the same spot, but there was no trace of Mokosho. The car was parked about ten kilometers from the Brandberg mountain close to a small outcrop. It is suspected that Mokosho left his vehicle behind and walked to the Brandberg mountain by foot and proceeded to ascend the mountain. The chances of Mokosho's survival are diminishing by the day, as there is currently very little water available on the mountain, whilst both day and night temperatures reach extremes.

The first man, Oswald Hochobeb (47), was arrested in Saam Staan at 04:20 for dealing in 19 full, one half and a quarter of Mandrax tablets, valued at N$1 995. The second suspect, Samuel Naobeb (42) was arrested just twenty minutes later, also in Saam Staan. He was found to be in the possession of 76 full, 35 quarters and one half Mandrax tablets as well as 2,18 kg of cannabis with the combined value at N$30 325. The third suspect, 57-year old Christians Philander was arrested at 04:50 at the Build-Together location for dealing in 682 grams of cannabis valued at N$6 820. The drug breakthrough was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police crime investigations coordinator for Erongo. All three suspects already made first court appearances.

Thieves are less likely to attempt a break in when they see activity on the property. · If you can't afford to hire someone, create the illusion that someone is home. Set a timer on your outside lights so that they only go on at night. Having your lights on all day and night is a dead giveaway that no-one is home. Also set a timer for your TV and radio to give the impression that someone is inside the house. If you have children, let them know to also not broadcast it when they are playing with their friends. Thieves are constantly on the prowl and could overhear them. Make sure that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving your home. Tourist goes missing on inhospitable Brandberg

Dear Swakopmund Resident, The Police Public Relations Committee was established in August 2016 and consists of members of the business community, municipality, social works, teachers, prisons as well as the police from both the Swakopmund and Mondesa station. It is important to take crime seriously in this day and age. One of the first considerations discussed was the need for cameras in our town. Some of the public requested for a City Police and we started looking into this. The City Police in Windhoek is a burden to the Municipality of Windhoek and it was our aim to not have this happen to Swakopmund. PPRC put heads together as a community and looked at the following: Project funding – We thought the only way funding this initiative would be through monthly adding N$10.00 onto rate payers accounts. With this the community has also into and ownership in this. A Safety and security line will be added on the municipal account.

The widespread aerial search for a missing Senegalese tourist, who is suspected to have climbed the Brandberg mountain alone, did not yield any results so far. At the time of going to print yesterday, there was no trace of 37-year-old Mark Mokosho who is now missing for more than three days. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigation coordinator for Erongo, Mokosho was first reported missing on Friday evening (15 December). According to Iikuyu, the Senegalese national resides in the United States of America and is currently on holiday in Namibia. “On Friday morning he drove alone from Swakopmund to Brandberg for camping. Rescue response in under 15 minutes Rudi Bowe From the moment of receiving the call it took emergency services of Walvis Bay under 15 minutes to be at the accident scene. This was during a recent emergency drill on the D1984 (the road east of the dune belt) requested by eXtreme Customs Clearing Services (XCCS) to test the readiness of Walvis Bay’s emergency services in the event of road accidents involving fuel tanker trucks. From 1 January to 5 November there were 641 road fatalities on Namibia’s roads. That is 57 more accidents than in the same period in 2016. With this in mind and the festive season that is now upon us, the exercise was also valuable for all emergency services to test their readiness. For XCCS as a fuel road transport operator it is also important to know the readiness of emergency services, as it saves life in the event of accidents, says Raymond Himmel, Operations Manager at XCCS. One of the participants was Namchem’s hazardous materials response unit also took part in the recent exercise and saw that as an invaluable opportunity to assess and better prepare itself to manage tanker accident spills. In many instances people only see road accidents at face value, but clean ups after the accident, decontamination and environmental rehabilitation is the hard and dedicated work so often not seen or recognised in its importance. It is Namchem's highest priority to ensure both the safety of all parties involved and of course the preservation and rehabilitation of the environment impacted by a fuel spill. After a fuel spill in the event of accidents Namchem jumps into action to remove or decontaminate and rehabilitate the soil directly impacted by a fuel spill. “Operating as a contracted HAZ-MAT responder for various Liquid Chemical and Hydro-carbon transport operators, we deal with various branches of law enforcement and EMT operators. It is during exercises like these we renew our commitment and our relations with these various emergency service branches, explained a representative of Namchem.

Anders ausgedrückt: Der Weihnachtsmarkt ist Chinatown mit zu viel Klimmbimm geworden. Das hat sich in diesem Jahr geändert. Zwar gibt es noch immer viel Tinnef wie Kappen, Holzautos und Plastikspielzeug zu kaufen, sowie massenweise Essstände, andererseits aber auch reichlich viel Weihnachtliches... im nächsten Jahr hoffentlich noch mehr!

Ein Bonsai lebt und kann je nach Sorte bei normaler Pflege weit über 100 Jahre alt werden. Wichtig ist eben die Pflege, und die beginnt mit folgenden Überlegungen: 1. Wollen Sie Ihren Bonsai im Zimmer oder lieber im Freien aufstellen und pflegen? 2. Haben Sie im Zimmer einen Platz mit genügend Licht und doch nicht vor dem Nordfenster an der prallen Sonne? 3. Können Sie den Bonsai mit genügend Luftfeuchtigkeit versorgen? 4. Wenn Sie lieber einen Baum im Freien haben möchten, ist es dann möglich, diesen im Hochsommer etwas zu schattieren? 5. Gibt es einen Überwinterungsplatz wie eine helle Scheune, Garage, Wintergarten oder Ähnliches.? Weihnachtsgeschichte Als der alte Mann an einem nebligen Morgen die Strasse entlang spazierte, sah er plötzlich Ruth vor sich, die weggeworfene PetFlaschen und anderen Müll aufhob und in eine Tasche steckte. Als er neben ihr war, fragte er sie, warum sie das denn tue. Ruth blickte ihn seltsam an und sagte:"Das ist ganz einfach, weil Müll die Umwelt stark belastet und was die Umwelt belastet, schadet auch uns Menschen." Er grübelte, ließ sich den Kreislauf des Lebens, des Abfalls und aller möglichen Dinge durch den Kopf gehen. Am anderen Morgen stand er früher auf als sonst. Zielstrebig war er und in Eile. Er wußte genau, was er wollte,

WESBANK West Coast 4x4 Vasbyt

Phillip Seidler aims for 5th consecutive win at Pupkewitz Jetty Mile The 11th consecutive for year the annual Pupkewitz Jetty Mile will be on 27 December it's. The full event, the Jetty Mile, consist of an open water sea swim from the Tiger Reef Beach Bar, around the Jetty and into the Mole.

The Wesbank Weskus 4x4 Vasbyt will take place on 30 December 2017 at Dune 2 [the amphitheatre behind Dune 7]. This year promises to be the biggest Vasbyt event ever, as the nearly the entire local and a few 4x4 Vasbyt participants from South Africa with their extreme vehicles are ready for the action line up. The Weskus 4x4 Vasbyt is hosted by the Namib Desert 4x4 Club and is sponsored by Wesbank and Ironman. The final entries will start at 07:00 and the Vasbyt starts at 08:00. The gate fees will be N$20 per person and per vehicle. Bring your family and friends and enjoy the day with us. Obstacles will put everyone’s skills and vehicles to the test.

The main swim event will start at 3.30pm at Tiger Reef. Swimmers will then make their way around the Jetty and finish at the Mole. The distance is approximately one nautical mile (1.85km). The swimmers have the benefit of swimming with the current. Event organisers, OTB SPORT said "Even if sea conditions are extremely rough it is unlikely that the event will be cancelled. Competitors (minors in consultation and agreement with their parent) need to assess for themselves whether they are capable of taking part in the sea conditions on the day. Competitors need to be self sufficient in the water, as sea rescue is very limited and the rougher the conditions the more difficult or impossible a sea rescue operation is". The Sprint swim of 600m will take place in the more protected waters of the Mole at 4.30pm, and at 5.00pm there will be a Kiddies Fun event where children are accompanied by their parents or another competent swimmer, and can make use of any flotation device. OTB SPORT said that they expected around 200 - 250 participants, but a lot depended on the sea conditions on the day. Favourite for the male category in the Jetty Mile is local Swakopmunder, and 4 time winner, Phillip Seidler. Seidler is in peak condition. Earlier this year he took part in the SA National Open Water swim, which qualified him for the FINA Senior World Championship in Hungary. This placed him in 42nd position of 62 world elite swimmers, just 2 minutes off the French World Champ Olivier, and in 4th position in Africa. Seidler first competed in the Jetty Mile in 2012 at the age of 14. He won the youth age category and was third overall. The bug had bitten and Seidler was determined to win the following years Jetty Mile. In 2013 the 15 year old not only won the Jetty Mile in a comfortable lead, but also set a new record in a time of 24:22. In 2014 Seidler was set on defending his title. Siedler says, "We had to compete in big swell, as a surfer I could use my wave knowledge which was a huge advantage. I was able to break my prior record by over 4 minutes in a time of 20:03". Seidler maintained his title in 2015 and 2016. For the 2017 swim Seidler said "I will not give away my secret for this year's focus. I will leave it up to everybody's guess what will happen this year". Favourite amongst the females is last year's winner, 15 year old Heleni Stergiadis. Ansone Boshoff, who was first female out the water in the Sandman Triathlon that took place in Swakopmund at the beginning of December, is also tipped as a contender. The Event is the seventh & final Timeout Beach Series 2017 event of the year, the Bank Windhoek Beach Bash Volleyball 2017, will be hosted at the beautiful setting of Long Beach, the perfect combination of sun, sea, sand & dunes. 2018 Quinton-Steele Botes (OSB) Athletic Coaching and Training Camp 25th years ago the late Quinton-Steele Botes established the QSB coaching and training camp, it was his dream to train and develop coaches in Namibia. In 1992 Quintonkicked off the first camp with 25 local teachers and coaches, 3 coaches attended from South Africa and 1 coach from Germany also attended the first Athletic Coaching and Training Camp. Due to the passing of the late Quinton-Steele Botes, Leoni van Rensburg took over the responsibility of continuing with the coaching camps and heading the camps as Leoni shares the same dream as the late Quinton-Steele Botes, which is keeping athletics alive in Namibia. Most stakeholders agreed to stay on board and continue with their sponsorships, toensure with the continued success of the QSB coaching and training camps. Without the sponsorships of Namibian companies, the coaching and training camps will not be possible. Marathon Sugar has since the beginning been the main sponsor and therefore they are proud to support and be part of Namibian sports specifically through athletics. Marathon Sugar's interest in funding athletic courses and training camps has always been to benefit the previously disadvantaged young Namibians. Windhoek Draught Touch Rugby The Walvis Bay Rugby Club and Windhoek Draught is proud to bring you once more the annual Windhoek Draught Touch Rugby tournament on 26 December at the main beach of Henties Bay. This is one of the most popular events on the festive season calendar each year. This is the 33rd Windhoek Draught Touch Rugby Tournament and the 4th year that Walvis Bay Rugby Club and Penguin Angling Club will host the event together, at the same venue and at the same time. This year will again see the crowning of Miss Touchies. Each touch rugby team must enter a lady for the pageant. The organisers explained players that register with a particular team can only play for that particular team on 26 December. More than 20 teams have already entered for the tournament, with players from as far afield as South Africa and Namibian national rugby players that will be in action. Several teams from Walvis Bay and Swakopmund will also participate. There are still one or two openings for teams to register for the event. Senior teams that would like to enter for the event must pay an entry of N$1 500 and junior teams pay N$1 300. The prize money for this year's tournament is N$60 000. On the stage for music entertainment will be local artist Jo Nicol and South African star DJ Ossewa. Be sure not to miss out. If you think you have what it takes, enter the Windhoek Draught Touch Rugby challenge. The entrance fee at the gate for spectators is N$50 per vehicle and there will be more than enough parking. Some 2000 vehicles are expected and strict security will be enforced. Sun screen is compulsory and the food stalls will have a wide variety on sale for hungry tummies.

MX Challenge promises excitement for participants and spectators A new, exciting event has been added to this year's December holiday calendar: The December Motocross Challenge hosted by the Swakopmund MX Promoters with Dune Worx Yamaha as the main sponsor will be held on 27 and 28 December at the track located north of Swakopmund. Roaring engines, high jumps and cheering fans. The Motocross Challenge promises to be an exciting event for participants and spectators alike. The event features 11 classes (from 50 CC to 450CC) and besides ample food and beverages, entertainment will be offered by local DJ Varnhooligan. The event commences on Wednesday (27 December) with official practice runs with a "King of Dirt" (Fun Race) to start in the afternoon. Thursday (28 December) will feature practice runs in the morning, followed by three hearts scheduled to start from 10:00. Highlights will include the "Prince of Track" scheduled for 15:40, followed by the "King of Dirt" at 16:10. The Motocross track is located about five kilometers north of Swakopmund. To prepare for the competition the track will be closed as of 20 December.

Dr. Kehat Beukes memorial chess tournament

Lesley !Hoaeb and Delano Muller from the Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay was part of 27 kickboxers from Southern African RCFAI & Kickboxing Academies that attended the Black Belt grading of Ring Contact Fighting Arts International from 8 â€“ 18 December 2017 in Vredefort, Free State, South Africa. The The testing and Black Belt grading was done by Master Joe Viljoen, World President of Ring Contact Fighting Arts International. Black Belt Students and instructors were tested according to skill, stamina, fitness and techniques. The two Namibian students grading was successful and were awarded with the following: Lesley !Hoaeb (26 years old) â€“ 2nd degree black belt (instructor). Delano Muller (13 year old) - Red Suit Ushidoshi

(instructor). The two instructors learned and acquired a lot of knowledge regarding, techniques, training methods and skills which they are excited to share with students. The two brothers are very excited about the New Year and want to make it the best year ever in Namibia for Kickboxing and want to attend as much competitions as possible. The future looks bright and positive for them and all kickboxers in Namibia.

The Kehat Beukes memorial chess tournament that was held over the weekend in Swakopmund was won by Immanuel Gariseb. The key developer and young chess coach at the coast is the new champion in the open division. Fide master Dante Beukes the current Namibian classic chess champion was the winner of the junior division. The women division was won by Maranatha Shadipeni and the winner of the cadet division was Gale Jane. The majority of the participated in the two-day tournament with just over 30 players at the annual tournament are from Walvis Bay and Swakopmund while some are from Oshakati and Windhoek.The tournament is in celebration of the late Dr Kehat Beukes, Namibia's first black specialist and president of the Namibia Chess Federation. The Swakopmund International Chess Tournament was founded by Dr Kehat Beukes in 1994 and was renamed after his death. Bank Windhoek sponsored N$17 000 toward the event.

The Senior Open Golf Championship The Senior Open Golf Championship took place in Swakopmund on 12 and 13 December 2017. This year 39 golfers took part in the competition with participants from various golf clubs inland and the coast competing in the two day tournament that was played at the Rossmund Golf Course. Gerd Vogel was the winner of the Senior Open Golf Championship that was hosted by Coastal Senior Golfers at Rossmund Golf Course. Tienie van Rensburg and Tim Botha was part of the organizing committee with Sanet de Waal, Head: CSI, Sponsorship and Events at Bank Windhoek and Gerhard Byleveld, owner for Advertising Displays cc, a sponsor of the tournament were also present at the event.
