Many Swakopmund residents are living in fear after the murders earlier this month in Swakopmund of the elderly couple Siegfried and Siegline Strzelecki. The couple was overpowered in their home in Vineta. Mrs. Strzelecki died in the attack and her husband died days later of his injuries. Also in this case the Police apprehended the alleged murderers within hours. Considering the similarities between the two cases, in that some of the suspects were employed by the victims, Iikuyu has called on the public to "not just employ anyone off the street.� "If you employ a domestic worker or similar, always ensure that you make a copy of their ID or personal documents and ask for references," he said. Iikuyu was speaking to the media at the victim's house on Friday afternoon. According to Iikuyu the preliminary investigation has determined that the main suspect in the

Hartmann murder, who was arrested in Outjo, was not only the boyfriend of the domestic worker, but he was also employed by the victim as a gardener for one month and two weeks before the incident. The domestic worker was questioned but she could not been linked to the case. According to Iikuyu it is alleged that between Thursday (17 August) 09:00 and Friday (18 August) 08:15 the suspect forced Hartmann into a small toiletroom outside his resident. He tied the elderly man's hands behind his back and used the same cable to tie up the victim around a pipe of the toilet bowl. "It is alleged he hit the victim with two bricks on the forehead and on the head causing serious open wounds and heavy bleeding. It is believed these blows by blunt object caused Hartmann's death", Iikuyu said. The suspects thereafter locked the pensioner inside the toilet-room. The deceased's body was discovered on Friday morning in a pool of blood by police officers. The body was taken to Walvis Bay Police Mortuary for a postmortem examination. "The suspects also attemp-

ted to cut open a wallmounted mounted safe, but with no success," Iikuyu added. The safe has a number lock. Afterwards the suspects stole a Lenovo Laptop and one J-7 Samsung cell phone belonging to the deceased. The first suspect in the matter, a 25-year old who is from Okakarara, in the Otjozondjupa Region, was arrested late on Friday afternoon at Outjo by the police. The suspect was shot and injured by members of the police when he resisted arrest. He was admitted at a hospital in Windhoek. Some of the stolen items were found in his possession. After his arrest a second suspect, a 26-year old, was arrested at Swakopmund. "We believe that they are friends, but the second suspect was not employed by the victim," Iikuyu continued. The deceased was staying alone at the house located on the corner of Amatis and Turmalin Street in Vineta. It is believed that he doesn't have family in Namibia. The police requests anyone who knows his relatives to Contact Det. Insp. Tjihavero at 064-415050 or any police station.

From Grocery to Regional Manager PnP Regional Manager for Pick n Pay (PnP) Namibia – a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group -, Angelo Morkel is not only on his way to celebrating his 20th anniversary in 2018 as part of the PnP team, but boasts with a significant level of growth over the past 19 years. "I started my journey as a casual grocery bag packer straight after school in 1995 at the then Model Woolworths, and was appointed permanently on 14 April in 1998 – one year after the retailer was renamed 'Model Pick n Pay'. I can clearly remember how particular my supervisor, Monica Philander was about packing grocery bags, and how I was always so focused on doing it the way she taught me. As simple as the job may seem, it was a challenge, because I was so used to packing everything together in my personal capacity - things like not packing meat together with toiletries in one bag is a very strict rule, on which no mistakes were allowed by Philander, nor accepted by the customer. Focus and precision was thus crucial when doing my job."During his journey as packer, Morkel was also exposed to shelf packing and floor supervising, and on permanent appointment, was promoted to floor supervisor at PnP Walvis Bay, and enrolled to the internal three-year Trainee Manager Programme, which led to his promotion to Assistant Store Manager at the Swakopmund branch in 2001. Morkel: "I was extremely excited about the trainee program and regarded this as my opportunity to prove myself. Going forward my progress always came as a surprise to me, because I did not expect it to happen at such speed. Although I was always focused on doing well and standing out in whatever I do, the pace of my growth and development had me in awe every time. During my journey I also became

involved in store layouts and was proudly involved in the layouts of the Katima Mulilo, Ondangwa, Oshikango, Tsumeb, Auas Valley, Eros and Khomasdal stores." In 2003 Morkel was promoted to Store Controller of the Khomasdal PnP Store, which he held for six months before he saw his next promotion to nonfoods specialist at the same branch. The journey of growth continued for Morkel when he was transferred to the Wernhil Park store as Inventory/Warehouse Manager in 2008 - a position he served in for one year before his next move to Assistant Store Manager at the Auas Valley store in 2009 – and eventually, in 2010 promoted to Store Manager of the same store. Today Morkel occupies the position of Regional Manager at the Wernhil store –effective from the 1st of July 2017. While his current duties entail supporting and managing all the managers of the Wernhil store, he is also a support system and mentor to store managers of other PnP branches in Windhoek. They also did not succeed, but an alarming fact is these criminals knew where the safes are located and possibly expected that valuables were kept in the safe. "What is noticeable is that in both cases the suspects were in a position of trust. It is exactly for this reason residents should keep their belongings, especially items which are very valuable, hidden from their employees. While sharing these general safety tips Shapumba encouraged the community to be proactive and – by enforcing the above ideas, to prevent such crimes. That is why the police in the Erongo region is planning to host a similar public meeting in Walvis Bay soon. "We want to share these tips with residents of the harbour town too." "Walvis Bay and Swakopmund are connected. We need to stand up and fight crime together," he said. Generous donation towards the Wild Horses The Wild Horses of the Namib are threatened by extinction. Following five years without any substantial rainfall, they barely find pasture in their habitat near Aus, and their survival depends on additional feeding. The Namibia Wild Horses Foundation would like to thank Mr Josef Vitus Schubert, Austrian Honorary Consul in Namibia, for the latest generous donation of 800 bales of hay, which will help the horses through the coming weeks. Since additional feeding started 20 months ago, the condition of the horses fluctuated between moderate to poor. With the onset of rains in the beginning of 2017 better quality hay became available as well as Eragrostis teff which seems to be more palatable to the horses. The NWHF therefore increased its efforts to source good quality teff. At present 41 mares and 74 stallions are fighting for survival on the Garub plains. One of their biggest threats are hyenas. Three months ago the Foundation, in conformance with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, started to provide the hyenas with additional food and managed to reduce predation of the horses significantly. Though he now resides 15,000 kilometers away from his home town of Swakopmund, Garth Prince (Prinsonsky) still considers himself a coastal boy from Namibia. Many might remember him from his schooldays at SSS, or perhaps as a singer in the Mascato Youth Choir and various coastal vocal groups including the award-winning “Afroshine.” In 2008, Garth joined his fiancée in Canada and is now married and raising two children. He taught his children Namibian folk songs as a way to stay in touch with his roots, and over time his love for teaching and music merged. Since entering this new phase of his career, he has become a sought after teacher of African music in Canadian schools. He travels from school to school doing workshops for both students and educators, but it is The African Song and Dance artist-in-residence program for which he is best known. He devotes a week or more preparing students for a concert with the assistance of a professional sound technician and featuring a special appearance by The Garth Prince Band. Under Garth's guidance, the students perform an uplifting

concert for their parents and community on the final day of the residency. August of 2017 marks a highlight in his life, both personally and professionally. With the support of the Edmonton Arts Council, he returns to Namibia for the first time in nine years to recreate his Canadian residency experience for the benefit of primary schools in Walvis Bay. His goal is to give Namibian students an opportunity to experience being part of a professional music concert, and inspire them to strive for high levels of excellence in both music and life. Garth is humbled that a team of Canadian filmmakers has decided to accompany him and transform his trip into a documentary feature film to be submitted to Canadian and international film festivals. Canadian director,

Alicia Krawchuk, tells his story on both Canadian and Namibian soil. The residency in Namibia will be mirrored by a Garth Prince residency in Canada, showing North American audiences what life is like in Namibia while simultaneously showing Namibians what Garth's life is like in Canada. Included in the film will be visits to Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Omaruru and Windhoek. For the Walvis Bay concert, Garth re-

unites with former Afroshine band members Gerson Mwatile and Romano Nauseb, and they will be accompanied by band members Desmond Prins (on bass), Joseph Richer (on keys) and Edwin Mc Mcorney (on drums). The afternoon concert promises to be a fun experience for the coastal community. Attendees will also have an opportunity to be interviewed and provide their comments, some of which will be included in the film.

Garth would like to acknowledge that the success he has attained thus far would not have been possible without the generous support of community members throughout his early career. Playtime Youth Development Trust Playtime Development Trust has been established to assist with the development of youth sports talent at the coast. There are three trustees of the Trust with existing beneficiaries. The main aim of the trust is to solicit sponsors for different sport development programs within different sporting bodies.

Pro-Ed Academy U/19B 2017 Champs The Momentum Boards Rugby Trophy Finals was a big success with fourteen games that were played on Friday and Saturday at the Hage Geingob Stadium Rugby Stadium in Windhoek. Pro-Ed Academy from Swakopmund on Saturday became the U/19 the 2017 Momentum Boards Rugby Trophy champions, beating Keetmanshoop Private School 29-27. The Steers U/11 final was played between the team of Pro-Ed Academy and Windhoek Gimnasium. Pro-Ed lost 13-12 against Windhoek Gymnasiums. Namib Diesel Walvis Bay Private High School lost 319 to Windhoek Gymnasiums in the U19 super final. The other results of the Momentum Boards Rugby Trophy finals are as follows: Steers U/11 Windhoek Gymnasiums13-12 Pro-Ed Academy. At this point the Trust only caters for soccer and cricket in Walvis Bay. The aim is to identify other sport bodies at the coast which have a specific need. Companies on board so far are Camoposatu Investments, Vernier Investments, Langer Heinrich, EBH and Belmet Engineering. Spectators and sport lovers were treated to a good game of cricket on Saturday morning, at the Sparta sports field in Walvis Bay. The event was sponsored by Playtime and was a farewell to the ten cricket girls that have been selected to represent Namibia U/19 in the upcoming tournament in Botswana. These girls have progressed through the cricket development programme, organised and supported by various stakeholders such as !Nara Primary School, Blue Waters Sport Club, Welwitchia Cricket, Cricket Namibia and Playtime Youth Development Trust. The founder and one of the trustees of Playtime, Mr Sandro de Gouveia, was proud to present the girls with a sponsorship for the envisaged trip to Botswana. Mr de Gouveia further said: "I am extremely proud of the achievements of our cricket girls. Their continuous efforts and hard work on and off the pitch. They are true role models for our youth. With the support of our various sponsors, we can continue with our development programme". None of this would have been possible without the help of companies such as Camoposatu Investments, Vernier Investments and others. Over the last few years, through the development programme of Playtime, more than 10 girls have made the Namibian youth team in their respective age groups. Others had the opportunity to simply play and enjoy the game whilst learning about respect, discipline, comradery and team work. This is our collective victory - Mannetti The sweet 2-0 victory for the Brave Warriors on Sunday against Comoros was by Namibians for Namibians as the team heads to Kenya 2018 African Nations Championship finals for the first time ever. Veteran striker Muna Katupose rose from the bench to score two headed goals and seal Namibia's qualification with a 2-0 victory and 3-2 on aggregate against a dejected Comoros and in front of an appreciative and jubilant Namibians packed into the Sam Nujoma Stadium. Mannetti reveals that he told the players last night to come to the party and he was confident of victory in the game today despite going into halftime goalless and with pressure mounting. “We had the away goal and for us we had a plan for anything today. This past week we planned on a lot of scenarios and I'm so proud today it worked and we are through. It is sweet victory for all of us from the fans to the players. We have qualified for Kenya", states an excited Mannetti. Captain Ronald Ketjijere adds that while the pressure was mounting as they needed to score, he is proud of the team effort on the day and that they are finally in Kenya 2018. “I spoke to the new boys individually last night after our team talk and calmed them down and today on the pitch things started off well because we created chances in the first half as well but the final touch was not good. “In the end we scored and we are through, that's what matters”
