World Bee Day Covid-19:
Cases more severe, more hospitalisations and deaths Namibia's health authorities issued a stern warning of a steep increase in the number of new Covid-19 infections and also a higher death rate in recent weeks. This increase also represents more severe cases, higher number of hospitalisations, and deaths. With the winter only days away, Namibians are urged to adhere to Covid-19 safety procedures and to embrace the opportunity to get vaccinated. “Recent weeks have witnessed a steep spike in the numbers of new Covid-19 infections around the country. On average, Covid-19 infections are reported in all fourteen regions of the country on a daily basis”, states the ministry of health and social services in a recent public notice. Adding, the increase in cases exerted pressure on the capacities in intensive care units of both public- and private hospitals. The ministry attributes this increase in cases to Namibians becoming complacent, and letting their guard down in the fight against the Covid19 pandemic. As citizens of the country Namibians can do their part by complying with public health regulations. That includes wearing face masks correctly, wash hands regularly, avoid crowded places, practise social distancing and to isolate and get tested should a person show any symptoms associated with a Coronavirus infection.
Namibians are also urged to respect curfew hours (22:00-04:00 all days of the week) and business owners and managers need to ensure their premises promote social distancing and stay within the business hours provided for in the public health regulations. Both the B.1351 and B1.1.7 strains of the Coronavirus, respectively the more dangerous variant of the Coronavirus found in South Africa and the United Kingdom has since been detected in Namibia. These variants are associated with more severe infections, higher hospitalisation rate and also higher death rate, prompting the ministry of health and social services to monitor developments very closely, according to the statement. As lockdowns have proven globally as the most efficient way to curb the pandemic, Namibians cannot rule out lockdowns in the ensuing months, if the need arises. It remains therefore a patriotic duty of every Namibian to adhere to safety regulations, and in doing so ensure their fellow countrymen stay protected, to preventing further harm to the Namibian economy (any form of lockdown) and to speed up the country's return to normal life.
Well-known security operator, Nicky van Zyl acquitted on housebreaking and theft charges A well-known personality in Walvis Bay’s private security industry, Mr. Nickey van Zyl (46) was acquitted on a case of housebreaking with the intent to steal and a second charge of theft on Wednesday. Van Zyl was arrested on 22 December 2018 as the only suspect in a burglary at the branch of Ackermans at the Metropolitan Plaza in Walvis Bay’s central business district. The burglary took place some time during the night of 21/22 December. Cash to the value of N$58 000 was stolen during the burglary. A local magistrate ruled on Wednesday there was inconclusive evidence to convict van Zyl. Close circuit television footage was also unclear and the burglar could not be identified from this footage. The stolen cash was never recovered.

Traffic circles’ turning angles too narrow The eastern-most traffic roundabout, on the B2 at the eastern entry of Swakopmund, was the scene of yet another truck accident. The turning circle of the circle is very narrow, it is believed. In several incidents over the past few years heavy laden trucks become unstable when they take the turn, resulting in it tipping over or losing their load. In this incident the truck carried marble blocks. The blocks fell off as the truck took the narrow turn. The marble blocks caused an obstruction in the road and traffic had to be re-routed. Residents of Swakopmund feel these circles are too narrow for trucks to us. Since the accident there was an outcry for the local authority to take the matter up with the Roads Authority of Namibia which bears responsibility for this stretch of the road. Others again are of opinion some truck drivers are entering the circle at high speed and some trucks are poorly loaded and are unstable. There is also concern about truck drivers opting to use the B2 coastal road via Swakopmund to Walvis Bay. With the new dual lane highway completed behind the dunes, many feel the traffic authority of Swakopmund and the Namibian Police need to compel trucks to use this new road and avoid the B2 coastal road. They suspect truck operators choose the B2 coastal road in order to avoid the weigh bridge at Walvis Bay's eastern entry point (airport road).
Body of newborn found in waste bin The body of a newborn baby was discovered in a waste skip in Walvis Bay's Kuisebmond suburb on Monday morning. A member of the public made the grim discovery in Nathanië Maxuilili Street. Members of the Namibian Police removed the body from the skip. People who witnessed this were enraged and questioned how a mother could be so cruel to dump her newborn. A woman was seen crying as the Police carried the tiny body, wrapped in cloth. An investigation has since been launched to find the mother.

Prime Minister receives her Covid-19 vaccine Namibia' Prime Minister Saara Nandjila Kuugongelwa-Amadhila joined other Cabinet members and senior Government official at Rhino Park in Windhoek on Saturday, to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. According to reports the prime minister received the AstraZeneca CoviShield. According to the latest statistics that were available at the time of going to press yesterday, a total of 56 759 Namibians received the first dose so far. A total of 22 377 received the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine and 34 582 people received the AstraZeneca CoviShield. A total of 3 780 Namibians already received their second dose. A total of 51 827 people contracted Covid-19 since the pandemic hit the country in the first weeks of 2020, of which 48 531 people recovered (94 % recovery rate). A total of 612 people died of Covid-19 and a further 127 people died of Covid-19 related illnesses.

World Bee Day World Bee Day was celebrated yesterday (20 May) worldwide. Many bee species are facing extinction due to pesticides used in agriculture and also in gardens. Without bees, humankind's existence is also under threat as we need pollinators to produce food. The African Wild Bee Institute issued a statement this week (below) to sensitise communities across Africa to preserve the existence of bees: “In Africa we live in one of the most species rich, diverse, and most beautiful continents on the planet. Our lives are still intricately connected to nature, from the food we eat, to the water we drink, to the air we breathe, to the soil in which we plant our food, and to the sheer spiritual solace we can find in nature. These natural processes are intimately linked to pollinators; those insects, birds, butterflies, beetles, rodents and even lizards which are abundant in our biologically diverse landscapes. Bees are the most important pollinators and on World Bee Day we have much to celebrate here in Africa. Bee conservation saves more than the wild honeybees. If the wild bees go extinct in Africa, so does the fauna and flora, in fact whole ecosystems that are dependent on the role of the wild bees. On Thursday May 20th, World Bee Day 2021, we recognised the importance of protecting all of our wild bees. They directly impact our human well-being, our nutrition, and the life support systems of our environments. Africa is rich with such diversity and such health. Go out with wonderment on that day, and look for Africa's wild bees, whether in your gardens or towns, villages, farms or wild spaces. Bees are beautiful and fascinating to study, each with their own character and unique behaviours. Bee-watch like others bird-watch. Look for patterns in their behaviour and maybe they will reveal something extraordinary to you; they might reveal some of their secrets. We know so little about these crucial pollinators”.
Lucky escape for two drivers on coastal road The drivers of these two vehicles had a lucky escape near Vierkantklip on Sunday night. Both drivers took evasive action to prevent a head-one collision resulting in one of the vehicles (black vehicle) to veer off the road and overturning. The other vehicle also left the road, but the driver could prevent it from overturning.

Street rehabilitation gains momentum *More contractors appointed *Several streets to be tarred The Municipality of Walvis Bay is in the process to re-establish its in-house road repair team to assist with the general repair of street surfaces. Three contractors have also been appointed, with prospects of more contractors to be appointed to resurface streets and also tar new roads. The Walvis Bay town council made street repairs, and the construction of more tar roads, two of its main priorities for the immediate future. In addition, the Department of Water, Waste and Environmental Affairs also appointed four contractors to repair sewer lines. Leaking sewer lines eroded street foundations at many locations across Walvis Bay, leading to potholes and rendering segments of the street unusable for vehicle traffic. The municipality this week elaborated on the current street repair activities in Walvis Bay: Slurry Reseal: During the recent rains, pools of stagnant water formed on the roads for prolonged periods, results in immediate damage to road surfaces. Many streets are currently receiving a slurry seal surface to prevent the ingress of water into the underlying layers of road foundation, thereby prolonging the lifespan of these streets. To attend to this, Council already appointed three contractors in March this year. These contractors are Ghaba Investment, Ndume Trading and Somseb Trading Enterprises. Repair work is progressing steadily and will cover all suburbs. To date slurry surfacing has been conducted in the Northern Industrial Area in Theo-Ben Gurirab Street, and a portion of Circumferential Road. In Kuisebmond a portion of Nathaniel Maxuilili Street has been completed. In Meersig First Street North, an intersection of Main Street and Kovambo Nujoma Avenue.
In the Lagoon, slurry sealing is progressing in Thomas Morris Street. Walvis Bay Town: portions of Theo-Ben Gurirab th Street, Hage Geingob Street and 6 Rd. Slurry th resealing has just commenced in 8 Rd as well. Reconstruction/Preservation of Roads: Council recently appointed Windhoek Consulting Engineers to kick-start the road reconstruction/ preservation programme. The consultant will make an assessment of all streets to determine which streets need to be prioritised for rehabilitation and which streets will have to be fully reconstructed. Some already prioritised for full reconstruction or in sections include: Ben Amadhila Road, Circumferential Road, Kovambo Nujoma Road, Rikumbi Kandanga Rd and Union Street. In fact, Union Street is the first on which work will be conducted. A number of intersections are also planned to be rebuilt with interlocks. The intersection of 5th Road and Hidipo Hamutenya has already been resurfaced with interlocks to protect it from especiallyheavyvehicletraffic. In addition, the following streets will be tarred in Kuisebmond: Johanna Benson; Fisant; a portion of Khomas Hochland, Kingklip as well as a portion of Brandberg Street. Shacks need to move to make space for street tarring works Residents of shacks along Johanna Benson Street in Kuisebmond are urged to pay heed to notices issued by the municipality of Walvis Bay to move, in order to make space for the street tarring works that is due to commence within the next few weeks. Dozens of shacks are so close to the road that there is no space to work, and in some instances shacks are actually infringing on the street reserve.

Bokkies trashed on home ground The FNB Rehoboth Woman's Rugby Club run in 7 ties to trash the FNB Kudu Bokkies 39-0 last Saturday at the Jan Wilkens Stadium in Walvis Bay. The match that was a first for the women from Rehoboth and the second for the Bokkies in the Namibia Rugby Union's Women's League was full of action and very hard with a few yellow cards to players from both teams. The halftime score was 17-0 in favour of Rehoboth with Fiola Vleite, Chrisenthia Bassingswaight and Alicia Gertze visited the try line. Alicia Gertze was successful with only one conversion. In the second half the women from Rehoboth run in three more tries of which three by Fiola Vleite and one by Ivonne Kooper who was also successful with one conversion. Magic Nyambe, Freddy Mwiya (NSC), Fanus Engelbrecht (The Dome) and Ulla Finkeldey (The Dome) The Namibia Sport Commission (NSC) the regulator of Sport in Namibia recognises The Dome in Swakopmund as a privately owned high-performance centre in Namibia. The Chief Administrator of the NSC Freddy Mwiya and Chief Executive Office of The Dome Fanus Engelbrecht, in line with Vision 2030 officially signed the memorandum of recognition with last Friday in Swakopmund. Mwiya said at the signing of the recognition that the endorsement of The Dome as a privately owned highperformance centre will contribute toward the development and empowering of the youth. Mwiya said “The Dome as a private institution has been recognised long before as a centre that offer high performance services to athletes, so what we as the NSC did is to inform all Namibian and the world that The Dome is a high-class centre with very high standards.” “We at The NSC would like all world sport bodies and
athlete to know the Namibian Government is satisfied and happy with the services that are on offer at The Dome and that we will rate them 8 out of 10 to leave room for improvement” Mwiya said. According to Mwiya this is the second HPC that the NSC is recognising in the Namibia with the HPC at Windhoek Gymnasium also a privately owned centre. We the NSC need to support private businesses that would like to invest in sport in the country. According to the Board Chairman of NAMSCORE Sports Consultancy Dr Ndeulipula Hamutumwa the recognition of the HPC at The Dome was long overdue. Dr Hamutumwa said “It is very important for the NSC to provide the necessary support to the privet sector as it is for the private sector to invest in sports.” Dr Hamutumwa believes that with this relationship between the
NSC and The Dome we see more international athletes and team come to Namibia for the preparation for world class event. “We need to encourage the more private businesses to invest in sports in the country” Dr Hamutumwa said. The General Manger at The Dome said that they are much exited as this opens the door for The Dome to be recognised internationally and thus help to promote Sports Tourism in the country. Finkeldey said “I feel elated as this was two years in the making. “We at The Dome would like to thank every Namibian, all sports Federations and athletes for their support over the years and thus help us to be a HPC and we invite more private companies like Radio Electronics in Walvis Bay through their partnership with Garmin that came onboard” Finkeldey said.

The Erongo Sports Council (ESC) was established last Friday 14 May with the election of its members at the office of the Erongo regions council in Swakopmund. The election of the ESC members was done at a meeting that was held with member from various Sport codes in the region. The members that were present were Nelson Meroro (Erongo Regional Council), Llewellyn Manale (Karate), Frank Slabbert (Athletics), Wallace Doëseb (Soccer), Antoinette Tsuses (Women's Soccer), Belinda Oberholster (Atheltics), Creswill Scholtz (Athletics), Foxy Afrikaner (Netball), Ryan Matsi (Women's Soccer), Valdemar Swart (Karate), Llewellyn Manale (Karate) and Lesley Goreseb in the presence of Chief Administrator at the Namibian Sports Commission, Mr Simataa Mwiya and Magic Nyambe also from the office of the Namibian Sports Commission . Chief Administrator at the Namibian Sports Commission, Mr Simataa Mwiya said that the members have been tasked and mandated to become actively involved with all sporting codes in the region and spearhead the regions sporst development for a three-year term. Mwiya encouraged the new commissioners to draw inspiration from what the region has achieved so far in sports, despite the apparent challenges. "Work hard and serve the region, leave fighting each other, you have a mandate on your shoulders" Mwiya said. The ESC members that were elected are Chairperson - Mr Lesley Goreseb, Vice-Chairperson - Mr Wallace Doëseb, Secretary General - Mr Frank Slabbert, Treasurer - Ms Belinda Oberholster, Public Relations Officer - Mr Llewellyn Manale and Regional Council representative - Mr Nelson Meroro. According to the Public Relations Officer Mr Llewellyn Manale they are looking forward to governance amongst all of our registered regional sports codes. “We are here to see that the best is done for every single sport code, lets join hands and serve everyone with the best interests at heart” Manale said.
